Members of District 47,
Welcome to your District conference – “Oceans 47 - The Great Jewel Heist!”
A District conference presents a tremendous opportunity for you to extend your Toastmasters’ experience. Attending a Toastmasters District conference is a great way to learn, grow, and connect with others who are passionate about public speaking and leadership development.
I attended my first District conference in the first half of 2006. Those 3 days altered my view of Toastmasters, as it truly opened me up to the diversity of our members - and their goals. I learned lessons that weekend that have helped shape me into who I am today. I started asking “what if” more
For centuries humanity has looked to the skies and said, “what if we could…?”
What if we could stop migrating with the seasons? They invented agriculture.
What if we could stay safe and warm at night? They learned to control fire.
What if we could move things in an easier manner? They invented the wheel.
What is your “what if?” Are you exploring it? The District conference is a great way to do so. It was at a District conference where I had the first glimpse of my goal to become your International President. It was at a District conference where many World Champions of Public Speaking said, “what if?”
Share your goals with your fellow attendees, learn from those around you, and share your experience as an inspiration to those on their own journey.
Most importantly, have fun! Dr. Ralph Smedley, our founder, said that “we learn best in moments of enjoyment.”
I wish you the best as you attend your District conference and encourage you to take full advantage of the many opportunities you have to learn, grow, and ask “what if?”
In celebration,
Matt Kinsey, DTM 2022-2023 International PresidentAnwesha Banerjee, DTM

District 47 Toastmasters
This has been an extraordinary year as we witnessed Toastmasters as an organization growing and evolving around the world. The unforeseen challenges in past two years have pushed our boundaries and encouraged us to view leadership and communication through different lenses.
Half the battle is won when you show up, as the famous saying goes. I observed that in District 47. You showed up! You took ownership of your leadership roles, participated enthusiastically in club, area, division and district events and volunteered to step out of comfort zone to embrace new challenges and opportunities. Bravo!
You demonstrated resilience and grit in your unique personal and professional challenges and continued to shine in Toastmasters journey by expanding your communication and leadership skills in a new dimension. Diamonds are formed under pressure. I feel so proud to see each one of you shining today. Diamonds also reminds me of your exciting conference with a unique theme - Great Jewel Heist. Experience the power of connecting with fellow Toastmasters, learn from each other and build your wealth of wisdom and knowledge.
The beauty of Toastmasters is that once we become part of this family, we get access to fellow Toastmasters and mentors for life. Therefore, if some of you had to take a step back this year due to personal circumstances, don’t be discouraged. Pick up where you left off and continue your journey to personal development. Set your goals and pace yourself. Perseverance never fails.
Congratulations to all of you in District 47 for staying the course, navigating through your unique challenges and remaining committed through it all.
Let us celebrate 2022-2023 by finishing strong and get ready to welcome a renewed 2023-2024 Toastmasters term.
Cheers!
Anwesha Banerjee, DTM

Esteemed District 47 Toastmasters Members,
Who are you? A Detective or a Debutant?
“Ocean’s 47 – The Great Jewel Heist” is about to take place. You need to read the move and pick your side! Welcome to much excitement and mystery!
Your leaders’ ability to make strategic moves was particularly evident during your experience of the last three years. The tests of the global pandemic and a changing environment demanded that you pivoted from hosting in-person events to having virtual encounters in pursuit of fulfilling the District’s mission and personal dreams whilst honing your relationships.
As you prepare to have your Annual Conference, I know that planners and participants alike will learn and develop in a dynamic fun environment. Based on the informational video and revelation of some secrets, everything from education to entertainment is provided for you. No need to be a security risk or threat! The bonus is that you have the opportunity to be face to face!
Congratulations on ALL your achievements and for holding it together as a District and family especially through the torrid times of the past three years.
Sincere thanks to all your Teams and Committees who continue to serve selflessly. While strategically engaging in club excellence; member achievement; awareness and engagement; operational effectiveness, everyone has grown and Toastmasters members and others, are the better beneficiaries. We are truly grateful that you gave and commend you for your faithfulness and commitment. As your Region Advisor 2022-2023 and guide on the side, I am pleasingly proud of you! Toastmasters, make sure to secure your share from the coffers holding the $150M. Be strategic about what you will take away from the “Ocean’s 47 – The Great Jewel Heist!
Here are some secrets to succeed in the Heist – have a plan and stick to it; capitalize on your strengths; move out of your comfort zone stretching and keeping the big picture in mind! Enjoy your Conference! Have fun! Make member memories! See you in the Bahamas!!
Serving with you,

District 47 District Director
Welcome one and all to the 2023 District 47 “Ocean’s 47 – The Great Jewel Heist” annual conference! This 3-day hybrid event will provide an excellent opportunity to learn, grow, and meet fellow Toastmasters and persons from all over the world. We appreciate you being here and being a part of the fun.
The Toastmasters District mission is to build new clubs and support all clubs achieving excellence. The only way this can happen is if all our members come together and achieve our respective and collective goals. Over the past three+ years, the members of District 47 have stepped up and heeded the call of duty time and time again. The District 47 Executive Committee and Senior Leadership team would like to thank each and every one of you for your steadfast commitment to Toastmasters core values: integrity, respect, service, and excellence.
The Senior Leadership Team has had the distinct pleasure of working intimately with members across the district, supporting all members of the District while acting as fiduciary stewards of the District’s Finances. This year we have grown new clubs, supported all clubs in achieving excellence, and had a ton of fun along the way. We have held spectacular events such as Toastmasters Leadership Institutes (fully online and in-person), Club Officer Trainings, Speech Contests, and myriad educational webinars. Special recognition and thanks to the stellar work of the Program Quality Director and their team plus the tireless work of the Club Growth Director and their team. It has been an honor and pleasure to serve on the District 47 Trio with you. Together all of us within District 47 we embody the benefits of this great organization.
Thank you, members of District 47 and all of the loved ones in your life. Thank you for not backing down or giving up during some of the most trying times any of us have ever experienced and rejuvenating and imbuing the countless of individuals with the way you lead. Thank you to all club officers, members of the District Executive Council, and the Senior Leadership team. Special thanks to every member of District 47 for ensuring our clubs fulfill our goals.
Finally, thank you to everyone for believing in me and instilling faith in me as your District Director. Learning through the Trio roles of Club Growth Director and Program Quality Director prior to this year empowered me to learn and grow more than I ever have before. I owe it to the members of District 47 for the priceless memories. To a lifetime of more!
Enjoy this conference experience. Make the most of the opportunity to network, learn, and grow. After all, this is Toastmasters, where leaders are made.
Yours
in service, Austen Canonica, DTM District Director 2022-2023District 47 Program Quality Director

Thank you to our amazing co-chairs and the countless volunteers that have dedicated their time and energies to make this an incredible experience.
To the AMAZING PQD Team, thank you for stepping up day after day. To the INCREDIBLE D47 members who embraced the educational sessions, I hope you learned as much as I did and enjoyed the experience.
This has been a year of personal growth for me. District 47, thank you for allowing me the opportunity to learn from you, for inviting me into your clubs and for sharing your gifts and passion with me. You have made me a stronger servant leader and communicator.
Remember, Invest, Connect and Excel this weekend.
Yours in Service!
Lois Margolin, DTM Program Quality Director 2022-2023District 47 Club Growth Director
Greetings to my fellow District 47 Toastmasters Family Members.
It is both an honour and privilege to be here with you in person at our first District Conference since the COVID-19 pandemic inexorably changed the very fabric of our lives in early 2020. The past several months serving as Club Growth Director has been an amazing learning experience, and the opportunity to forge closer working relationships with our District 47 family members in Florida and the Bahamas, has been an invaluable one.
Let us congratulate ourselves on our successes thus far this Toastmasters year, and continue to work towards achieving our individual goals, which will result in our clubs achieving success, our Areas and Divisions achieving success….and of course our ultimate goal…. a Distinguished or higher District 47.
While the first part of the District’s mission is to grow new clubs, it also speaks to supporting excellence in all clubs. Let’s continue to tout the benefits of this amazing Toastmasters program and encourage others to join; let’s visit each other’s clubs, serve on each other’s club Agendas…let’s help those clubs who need a push, to get to the finish line.
A heartfelt, warm welcome goes out to our new members and new clubs who have joined our District 47 family, and we look forward to welcoming additional clubs and members before the end of the year.
Looking forward to seeing you at Toastmasters International Convention in The Bahamas in August.

District 47 Public Relations ManagerGreetings fellow Toastmasters!
It is a pleasure to serve as your Public Relations Manager for the year 2022-2023 and to lead a group of talented professionals. We have had an amazing and eventful year, and it was such a wonderful experience.
I would like to extend a warm welcome to you, especially the first timers who are attending the annual Spring Conference under the theme, "The Great Jewel Heist: Ocean's 47". This being my first inperson Conference, I ask that you join me in letting loose and expand your knowledge.
I wish to thank each of my team for stepping up and filling your respective roles. Without you, I don't know how I could have done such an awesome job promoting the district. As you continue to develop yourself, remember the four core values in Toastmasters: Integrity, Respect, Service and Excellence. Remember, nothing is impossible with God at the helm.
God bless you and enjoy the conference.
L Robert Knowles, BA, DTM Public Relations ManagerImmediate Past District 47 Director
Fellow Toastmasters in District 47, Greetings!
A shared experience we anticipate each year is our annual conference and how exciting it is that we get to be together. It is with an expansive heart that I bid you a huge welcome and look forward to hugs, smiles and learning over our days together.
We know in District 47 that growing and evolving is a journey and not a destination. I am fortunate to get to experience this way of living across the District through your level of participation and collaboration. To the District Leaders, thank you for your service and leadership during these changing times. Your continued commitment and dedication to Toastmasters and District 47 is evident each day. Over this weekend you’ll attend education sessions that will expand your communication and leadership skills, supporting you in becoming the person you aspire to be. I encourage you to attend and gather all the valuable information you can. Share what you learn during the conference with your clubs. Be reminded that information does not lead to transformation but application of information will. It is imperative that you apply the information into your clubs and your life so you can experience the change you wish to see.
Our organization and especially this conference thrive because of the countless volunteers. Do not let the weekend pass without you saying – Thank you! Drop a note via email to our Conference Chairs and let them know you see them. They and their teams deserve it all. Congratulations Program Quality Team!!!
I wish each one of you a wonder-filled experience at the Great Jewel Heist District 47 Annual Conference.

Simply saying thank you to my amazing PQD Team sounds so small. It truly takes a village to provide the educational support a thriving district like 47 requires. I want to be sure to thank each team for all their support, the 7:30 am monthly meetings and I am so happy that they are still taking my telephone calls.
Let’s start with our Pathways chairs. Thank you to Sheria King, DTM and Sarah Cherres, DTM for helping us raise our Pathways adoption rate by 3%. Our District has an 82% Pathways adoption rate and over 1000 educational goals have been completed, way to go! Sheria and Sarah provided 3 District Pathways presentations and visited many clubs. Let’s add our Program Quality Assistant Dominic Thompson, DTM to the mix as Dominic helped provide personalized club Pathways trainings.
The TLI chairs, Samantha Jones, DTM and Charmaine Hanna, DTM, were everywhere this year. Samantha was instrumental in helping us collate our data so you could receive credit, and Charmaine was an amazing presenter or facilitator. They were on top of everything.
The Speech Contest chairs, Rosena Duncanson, DTM and Elizabeth George, DTM were incredible. They made sure that every contest had a speech contest representative. They provided 3 trainings to the district and a 2-hour mock contest to the District Executive Council in December. These two individuals can recite the contest rules forward and backward and it was a pleasure to watch them grow and bond.
The DTM chairs, Denison Balfour, DTM and CeCe Espeut, DTM put on two Speed Mentoring sessions that engaged our important Distinguished Toastmasters. All year they recognized members as they received their DTM awards. They are responsible for creating the information in the program and our phenomenal DTM walk.
The Conference Chairs, Andre Noudjo and Euvunka Paul, DTM have been working tirelessly since September to create a member hybrid experience. Both Andre and Euvunka were part of my team last year and I am so lucky to have this dynamic duo chairing the conference. I would also like to add a special mention to Nick Smith, DTM, techie extraordinaire and Dominic Thompson, DTM who have also added countless hours to the conference.
This amazing group of 11+ individuals were dedicated to YOU the member. Everything we did was with you in mind, and I am so blessed to have this group as the PQD Team. My blessing were topped off with some incredible Division and Area Directors that stayed on top of things and helped us achieve our goals.
Lastly, thank you, the member for completing your educational goals, working on Pathways, attending training, being a presenter, a facilitator, a speech contestant or a speech contest functionary. You helped us make this year strong and because of you, I have become a better leader.
I am so grateful to the PQD Team, Trio members, Division and Area Directors and YOU the members who take to heart the meaning of being a Toastmaster.
Like I said in the beginning, Thank You is too small. How about…
Sincerely,
Lois Margolin, Program Quality Director 2022-2023“If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”
African ProverbA heartfelt thank you is extended to our Club Growth Team 2022/2023 - a wonderful team of volunteers, working behind the scenes to help our District achieve its mission of building new clubs and supporting all clubs in achieving excellence.
Dr. Susan Vineta, DTM and Colette Williams, DTM (Club Extension Chairs), Price Polynice, DTM and Ikysha Beneby, DTM (Club Retention Chairs); Ricardo Parsons and Irwinique Storr (Member Retention Chairs); Samantha Inguanzo, DTM and Julianna Duncanson, DTM (Member Extension Chairs); Sherlmerdine Cartwright, DTM (Club Growth Assistant)
Thank you for the gift of your time, support, your attendance at introductory meetings (both virtual and in-person), organizing demo meetings, visits to our not so strong clubs to provide encouragement and assistance where needed.
Our journey has been a great learning experience, and I look forward to an exciting road to the finish with you, as the clubs in the pipeline come on stream , new members continue to join and old members return, to our District 47 Toastmasters family.
To the wonderful members whom we serve, thank you for your continued commitment to your clubs and fellow members, and for continuing to reinvest in your personal growth and development. You remembered “Why” you joined Toastmasters and stayed the course, continuing to forge ahead and achieve your set goals.
We are on Mission: Possible! Let’s continue to work tirelessly to help each Member, Club, Area and Division finish the year strong and achieve our District goals!

Jim Barber joined Toastmasters in 1989. (That’s before the World Wide Web was created!) Since then, he has attended over 2,000 club meetings, several hundred area and division contests, dozens of District 47 conferences, 1 Regional conference, and 2 International Conventions.
In addition to being a long-time Toastmaster, Jim is also a professional speaker, a published author (he’s writing his 19th book now), a TEDx Talker, a copywriter, a book editor, a voiceover talent, a website designer, and a presentations coach.
But Jim also has a life outside of Toastmasters. He is the recipient of multiple awards from the Florida Speakers Association, including their Chapter Leadership Award which was named after him. Jim has presented workshops at several conventions of the National Speakers Association. And in 2000, PC World magazine declared Jim’s web site, The Barber Shop (https://thebarbershop.com), to be a "top ten" site for professional speakers.
Jim has been president of Plantation Toastmasters 4 times, he has served as the Chapter Liaison to the state of Florida for the National Speakers Association, and he is the only person to serve as president of the Florida Speakers Association twice.
Jim is in his 45th year of being a serial entrepreneur, and he’s just getting started.

“Take Your Talk from the Page to the Stage!”
By the time Dave Bricker graduated college, he was living aboard his own tiny sailboat. Soon after graduation, he set sail for the Bahamas with a locker full of food and dreams … and $40 in his pocket.
His voyages took him up and down the Bahamas, up the east coast of the US to Chesapeake Bay, and across the Atlantic to Gibraltar. He ran aground, dealt with mechanical breakdowns, got seasick more than once, slept in a volcano, survived powerful storms, and returned to the land of clocks and calendars with what he’d gone in search of stories!
Today, as a speaker, trainer, author, and coach, Dave Bricker helps remarkable people tell remarkable stories through writing, speaking, graphic design, technology, and music. If you want to say it, share it, or sell it, bring him your story; he’ll help you tell it.
