Message from the District Director

To My Fellow District 47 Toastmasters, In the realm of personal and professional development, few events can hold a candle to the power of a Toastmasters convention. Not just any convention, but a convention hosted by District 47. This convention allowed people from diverse professions and backgrounds to connect and embark on a journey of self-improvement. I am incredibly proud of District 47’s talented convention duo co-chairs, Distinguished Toastmasters Pamela Rolle and Anthony Longley. They had a stellar cast from District 47 as chairs for the various committees. District 47 showed up with 4 speakers and an incredible International Speech contestant, Anastarcia Palacious. In addition, District 47 was honored to receive the District Program Quality Award and the keynote speaker, Lisa Nichols was amazing! Can I get a Yes Yes? This event provided the opportunity to unlock our potential and to connect with the leaders of Toastmasters International. I believe every individual can become the best versions of ourselves, and Toastmasters is the tool to take us there. I met members that I still connect with from around the world, District 47 members who were passionate about serving at the convention and even more leaders at every turn. Am I going back next year? Absolutely! Where else can you continue this personal transformation and constantly be inspired? A shout out to Distinguished Toastmaster Denison Balfour who coordinated an event for over 200 Toastmasters, (including transportation), Distinguished Toastmaster Leonardo Burrows for creating a special event Tuesday night with Mark Brown and Darren Lacroix and all the members who contributed to making this such a special event. I was so proud of our district that I was beaming from ear to ear the entire week. The adage is true… District 47 is special and definitely rocks! District 47, you inspire me! I sincerely hope you are making the most of this year and that you are taking advantage of all the learning opportunities. I look forward to seeing you at your club, council and TLI events. Sincerely, Lois Margolin, DTM District 47 Director

Message from the Program Quality Director

Dear Fellow Toastmasters, I hope this message finds you in great spirits. I wanted to take a moment to reflect on our recent Toastmasters 2023 International Convention in Nassau, Bahamas. This convention was truly an unforgettable experience that beautifully encapsulated the spirit of fun, recognition, and learning that lies at the heart of Toastmasters. In Nassau, the convention exuded with the energy of individuals from around the world coming together to celebrate the boundless potential of communication, leadership, and personal growth. As Program Quality Director, I had the privilege of witnessing how fun and recognition were not just elements of the convention but integral components that breathed life into every moment. We all know in Toastmasters, fun is the spark that lights up our journey, and recognition is the applause that fuels our progress. In Nassau, this was more evident than ever. Group photos and selfies became cherished mementos of the friendships we forged. Laughter and lively conversations echoed in the hallways, creating an atmosphere of camaraderie that was nothing short of heartwarming. Some of our workshops, led by experienced District 47 Toastmasters like Distinguished Toastmaster Linda Clarke and Distinguished Toastmaster Carlos Palacious, not only imparted valuable knowledge but did so in a way that made learning truly enjoyable. We explored topics that were not just insightful but also incredibly fun, sparking our enthusiasm for growth. And let's not forget the World Championship of Public Speaking—a highlight that exemplified the transformative power of recognition. As Jocelyn Tyson, Nisha Shivram, and Maryam Ganni graced the stage, their speeches embodied Toastmasters' mission to empower communicators and leaders. Their achievements, celebrated with thunderous applause, were a testament to the recognition that lies at the core of our Toastmasters community. The Toastmasters 2023 International Convention was a profound experience that reinforced our commitment to growth, community, and Toastmasters' spirit. Lisa Nichols' electrifying keynote speech echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the power of sharing our stories and our collective impact. In her inspiring keynote, Lisa Nichols captured our convention's essence: fun, recognition, and learning. She reminded us that our journey isn't just about personal growth; it's about being part of a global community dedicated to uplifting one another. I want to thank each and every one of you who attended and especially those who volunteered as a Helping Hands at the convention. Your enthusiasm, dedication, and spirit are what make our Toastmasters family so special. Let's carry the lessons, the connections, and the memories from Nassau forward as we continue to have fun, celebrate recognition, and embrace the limitless possibilities of learning on our Toastmasters journey. Wishing you all continued success and boundless joy in your Toastmasters endeavors. Warm regards Price Polynice, DTM District 47 Program Quality Director

Message from the Club Growth Director

My Fellow District 47 Toastmasters, Attending the Toastmasters Convention for the first time was an exhilarating and transformative experience. This provided a platform for me with opportunities for growth as Club Growth Director and networking. As the convention approached, couldn’t help but feel a mixture of excitement and nervousness not sure what to expect for my first convention. From the official start of the convention which was kicked off with a warm welcome led by the dynamic co-chairs Anthony Longley and Pamela Rolle (both DTM), it evoked within me a sense of belonging and camaraderie. The energy in the Baha Mar convention center was contagious as Toastmasters from around the world congregated with one another. The opening ceremony featuring the parade of flags was beautiful and shows the reach that Toastmasters has around the world. The keynote speaker Lisa Nichols was nothing short of inspiring. The heart of the convention was the diverse range of workshops and seminars available. Before the start of the convention was two days of District Leader Training where I had the chance to begin connecting with Club Growth Directors around the world, engaging in conversations and lessons that broadened my horizons and exposed me to different perspectives, and ideas to improve the growth and retention for our district. These interactions allowed me to establish meaningful connections, exchange ideas, and foster lifelong friendships. Another highlight of the convention for me was the World Championship of Public Speaking, where the top 8 speakers from different regions showcased their exceptional oratory skills, it made me proud to see our very own Anastarcia Palacious on the world public speaking stage, being only the third Bahamian to do so. Attending my first Toastmasters Convention was an unforgettable experience that exceeded my expectations. If you are looking for a platform for personal and professional growth, fostering an environment of learning, support, and camaraderie, do not hesitate and make plans for the 2024 convention in Anaheim. Sincerely Ancin Munnings, DTM District 47 Club Growth Director

Unlocking the Power of Fun Elevating Toastmasters Meetings In the journey of Toastmasters, fun emerges as a pivotal element that often remains underestimated. While our core mission revolves around personal growth and development, injecting a dose of enjoyment and lightheartedness into our meetings can wield a profound influence. In this article, let's explore three critical facets that underscore the importance of fun in the context of Toastmasters meetings. It's a well-acknowledged fact that learning thrives in an atmosphere of enjoyment, a principle that resonates profoundly within Toastmasters meetings. The inclusion of fun elements serves a dual purpose: it breaks down initial barriers and fosters a warm and inviting environment. When members eagerly anticipate meetings as enjoyable learning experiences, it naturally leads to increased attendance and active participation. This relaxed ambiance encourages everyone to step out of their comfort zones and eagerly embrace speaking and leadership roles.

Emphasizing the Vital Role of Fun Clint Conliffe, DTM, a member of Universal Toastmasters who has honed his skills at The Improv in Dania Beach and The Villain Comedy Theatre in Miami, emphasizes, "Fun acts as the magical ingredient that transforms a Toastmasters meeting into a vibrant, welcoming community."

“We learn best when we are having fun.” - Ralph Smedley

How a Fun-Packed Environment Amplifies Engagement and Learning Fun serves as a potent catalyst for engagement. Engaged members are more inclined to actively participate, attentively absorb knowledge, and develop vital skills. Fun activities, interactive icebreakers, and engaging exercises stimulate mental agility, making learning an enjoyable endeavor. These experiences aid members in conquering initial apprehensions, helping them build confidence and cultivate their speaking and leadership abilities. A fun-filled atmosphere fosters a sense of camaraderie and support, thereby making Toastmasters meetings a secure space for experimentation, learning, and personal growth. In addition, fun activities are often embedded in training sessions, rendering team-building exercises memorable while promoting trust, collaboration, and cooperation among participants. Engaging in games and challenges that bring smiles not only fortify teams but also nurture the cooperative spirit, an indispensable trait both in Toastmasters meetings and professional domains.

Sharing Success Stories of Personal Growth Through Fun Activities Real stories from Toastmasters across our clubs attest to the transformative power of fun. Members who once struggled with public speaking or leadership roles found their confidence through fun activities. These activities challenge individuals to think creatively, speak impromptu, and adapt to unexpected situations—all valuable skills that translate into personal and professional growth.

Rick Furbush, Past District 47 Governor, brilliantly coined, "If it's not fun, it's not Toastmaster." This simple yet profound statement encapsulates the essence of Toastmasters—a place where personal development and enjoyment coexist harmoniously.

Humor is not merely an indulgence; it's an essential ingredient in our Toastmasters meetings. It strengthens engagement, enhances learning, and fuels personal growth. As we continue to explore creative ways to infuse fun into our meetings, let us remember that laughter and enjoyment are not distractions but tools that propel us toward our goals of becoming better communicators and leaders. So, let's embrace the power of fun in Toastmasters meetings and embark on this joyful journey of growth together.

Kathy Dyke DTM : Paving the Way in Division E In her role as Division E Director for the 2023-2024 term, Kathy Dyke has taken on a pivotal position within District 47 Toastmasters. Her journey, marked by unwavering commitment to personal growth and community service, has prepared her well for this crucial role. She joined Toastmasters International July 1, 2002 and is a member of West Kendall and Miami Advanced Toastmasters clubs. Kathy's mandate as Division Director is clear: she must provide vital support and guidance to the Area Directors under her purview. Her responsibilities extend beyond administration, encompassing a deeper commitment to helping clubs achieve their missions and serve their members effectively. Kathy's decision to assume the role of Division Director was spurred by a recent health scare, a stark reminder that life's promises are uncertain. Having previously served as an Area Governor in 2008-2009, she knew that she had more to offer to Toastmasters when the time was right. This year, with the stars aligning, Kathy seized the opportunity, encouraged by her deep admiration for Distinguished Toastmaster Lois Margolin, who was to become the District 47 Director. For her tenure, Kathy has set forth several goals. One of her top priorities is to ensure her presence is known and felt by all members of Division E. She is dedicated to working closely with clubs to help them attain at least a minimum Distinguished status. She has also taken the proactive step of creating a Division E Speakers Team. Kathy's commitment extends to struggling clubs, where she plans to offer individualized support and training, particularly in the crucial area of record keeping. Kathy's Toastmasters journey has been peppered with memorable achievements that have aptly prepared her for her current role. In 2009-2010, as Area Director she organized a highly successful Humorous and Evaluation contest, boasting 136 participants and featuring a guest speaker, Todd Hunt, a comedian, and author.

Kathy's contributions to Division E have not gone unnoticed. She earned the title of Division E Outstanding Toastmaster in 2009-2010 and again in 2020-2021. In 2022-2023, she proudly accepted the Division E DTM Super Nova Award, marking yet another milestone in her Toastmasters journey. Kathy's advice to fellow Toastmasters is both insightful and motivating. She urges members to regularly revisit the 'why' behind their Toastmasters journey, emphasizing the need for ongoing self-challenge and skill acquisition. Stepping out of one's comfort zone is essential for growth. Additionally, she encourages members to seek out mentors who can guide them towards becoming the best versions of themselves. Most importantly, Kathy believes in embracing leadership roles within the District, recognizing that such experiences are invaluable for personal and professional development. Kathy Dyke’s journey in Toastmasters is a testament to the transformative power of the program. With her wisdom, commitment, and passion, she is well-equipped to lead Division E to new heights, nurturing an environment where personal and professional growth are paramount.

It was a celebration of communication, leadership, and personal growth. Behind the scenes, two exceptional co-chairs were at the helm, orchestrating a truly memorable event. In this issue, we shine the spotlight on one of these extraordinary individuals: Pamela Rolle, DTM, a Past District 47 District Director and a proud member of Healing Communicators Toastmasters.

A Visionary Co-Chair Shaping the 2023 International Convention in The Bahamas For Pamela Rolle, the opportunity to co-chair the Toastmasters International convention in her hometown of Nassau was a dream come true. When asked about her initial thoughts and feelings on being appointed as a co-chair, she expressed profound honor and excitement. The chance to contribute to such a prestigious event, collaborate with Toastmasters worldwide, and host the convention in the picturesque setting of The Bahamas filled her with enthusiasm. One of the most memorable moments during the convention was witnessing the impact of keynote speaker Lisa Nichols' address at the opening ceremonies. For Pamela, this moment stood out as a highlight of the convention. The powerful and inspirational speech not only resonated deeply with the audience but also earned a resounding standing ovation. It reaffirmed the importance of effective communication and demonstrated how it unites people from diverse backgrounds—a true embodiment of the Toastmasters spirit. Pamela Rolle firmly believes that the convention significantly contributed to the growth and development of Toastmasters worldwide. Firstly, it provided a unique platform for members from different regions to connect, share ideas, and build lasting connections. This networking opportunity fostered unity and collaboration among Toastmasters globally.

Secondly, the convention served as a hub of learning experiences. Exceptional education sessions and speech contests showcased the power of effective communication and leadership. They encouraged attendees to strive for excellence in their own clubs and districts. Moreover, the convention introduced innovative ideas and practices that could be implemented within individual Toastmasters clubs and districts. The workshops and breakout sessions offered valuable insights and practical strategies for enhancing club quality and member engagement.

Finally, the international scope and visibility of the convention helped promote Toastmasters to a broader audience, potentially attracting new members and sponsors. It solidified Toastmasters as a global force in personal and professional development. Anthony Longley, DTM Navigating Dreams to Reality as Co-Chair of the 2023 International Conventio Every significant event has its unsung heroes, the individuals who work tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure its success. In the case of the 2023 International Toastmasters Convention held in Nassau, Bahamas, Anthony Longley, DTM a Past District 47 Director and Past Region 8 International Director, emerged as one of these remarkable individuals. A member of both Healing Communication and the First Bahamas Branch of Toastmasters, Anthony, alongside co-chair Pamela Rolle, played a pivotal role in bringing this prestigious event to life. When Anthony Longley learned of his appointment as co-chair for the Toastmasters International convention in the Bahamas, he was overcome with emotions. It marked the culmination of a dream that was planted as a seed 8 to 10 years ago during a District 47 conference. As he sat at a bar, chatting over cocktails with a visiting International Officer, little did he know that this casual conversation would eventually lead to him co-chairing a convention on home soil. Organizing an event of this magnitude is not without its challenges, and Anthony Longley faced his fair share. One of the most significant hurdles was negotiating with various governmental agencies to secure permissions, benefits, and concessions. Navigating the bureaucratic landscape proved to be an arduous task, requiring unwavering dedication and tenacity.

For Anthony, the convention was a whirlwind of memorable moments. Among the highlights were witnessing fellow Bahamian presenters deliver outstanding performances during the education sessions. These stellar displays of talent were punctuated by Anastarcia Palacious' remarkable performance in the World Championship of Public Speaking Contest. It was a moment of immense pride for Anthony and all Bahamian Toastmasters. Another heartwarming moment was witnessing the recognition of Edward Carey, DTM, the oldest active Bahamian Toastmaster, who received the Presidential Citation Award. This touching acknowledgment served as a testament to the dedication and contributions of Toastmasters from all corners of the globe. The 2023 International Convention in the Bahamas served as an inspiration not only for the local Toastmasters community but for the entire organization worldwide. It was proof that countries beyond the United States of America and Canada are significant players in the Toastmasters realm and that their contributions are profoundly valued. This convention served as a rallying cry, encouraging international countries to step forward and make their voices heard within the Toastmasters community. In Anthony Longley's words, the convention provided the impetus for international countries to step up and be counted. It was a resounding success that showcased the global reach and impact of Toastmasters, leaving a lasting legacy for the organization and its members worldwide.

Anastarcia Palacious: District 47 Champion Speaker The journey to becoming an exceptional speaker often begins in the heart of a Toastmasters club. For many, it's a journey that transcends borders, taking them from local club meetings to international stages. Anastarcia Palacious, representing Region 8, District 47, recently embarked on such a journey, reaching the finals of the International Speech Contest at the International Convention hosted by District 47. While Anastarcia may not have secured a topthree position, her presence in the finals was a source of immense pride for her district. In this feature article, Anastarcia shares her insights and experiences. Upon learning that she would be representing Region 8 on the international stage, Anastarcia experienced a whirlwind of emotions. "When I first learned I'd be representing our region internationally, a wave of exhilaration and humility washed over me," she says. "I was engulfed in a mix of pride and gratitude, aware of the responsibility and honor it encapsulated, but mostly, really excited!" Competing on an international level is a significant achievement, one that Anastarcia had been preparing for over the years. "I witnessed the World Championship of Public Speaking in Malaysia, but I wasn't sure I had the capacity to make it that far," she reflects. "Over the last five years, I developed my speaking skills inside and outside of Toastmasters, even becoming a Speaker Advocate Coach with Motivating the Masses. This year, I finally felt ready to put all I learned to the test by competing in the competition. It was a measurement of my own growth but also an opportunity to share a message of transformation with the world."

Representing Region 8 has been a milestone in both Anastarcia's personal and Toastmasters journey. She explains, "It has instilled in me a deeper sense of self-confidence, honed my skills, and expanded my perspective on the power of effective communication. I've forged invaluable connections and developed a heightened sense of purpose. I am also truly grateful for all the support from the For aspiring Toastmasters looking to region, my district, and the entire compete on the international stage, Bahamas.” Anastarcia offers valuable advice. "My advice is tenacity and practice," she emphasizes. "Absorb the wisdom around you, refine your skills constantly, and embrace each opportunity to speak. Equip yourself with feedback and mentorship by sharing your speeches in as many clubs across the world as possible. International feedback is important because the judges will be international. In addition to general feedback, work with a former World Champion of Public Speaking as a coach. They know what it takes to achieve success on this stage because they've done it. Believe in your message, and the world will too." As a District 47 Representative, Anastarcia considers herself both an honor and a responsibility. Her goal is to foster a community where the art of public speaking and leadership thrive. "Through workshops, mentorship, and collaborative initiatives, I plan to ignite the same passion I have for public speaking in fellow Toastmasters, promoting excellence, diversity, and inclusivity," she declares. Anastarcia's journey is an inspiration to all Toastmasters, reminding us that with dedication, practice, and a belief in our message, we can reach new heights in our speaking and leadership skills. Her commitment to nurturing the Toastmasters community further exemplifies the values of growth and empowerment that this organization represents. Additionally, it's worth noting that this Open House event was a hybrid gathering, with Toastmasters from around the world joining online to share in the celebration and inspiration. This gathering was more than just an ordinary meeting; it was a celebration of remarkable achievements, inspiration, and laughter. The event began with an inspiring keynote address by none other than the founder of the club, Rudy Jean-Bart, who has been lighting the path for members since 2014. Rudy's speech was nothing short of captivating, immediately drawing the audience into a world of motivation and personal growth. Following the keynote speech, the atmosphere took a hilarious turn with the arrival of Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM) Clint Conliffe, a stand-up comedian known for his wit and humor. Clint's comedic genius warmed the crowd's hearts and filled the room with laughter, setting the tone for an afternoon of enjoyment. But this Open House was not just about entertainment; it was a moment to revel in achievement. The Immediate Past President, Nazima London, took the stage to share a remarkable accomplishment. For the first time in its history, the Broward College Toastmasters club had achieved the prestigious President's Distinguished Status. Nazima's explanation of the club's journey to this achievement served as a testament to the dedication and hard work of its members. After the opening segment, it was time for a delightful Indian vegetarian brunch, complete with a celebratory cake and tea. Members and guests mingled, shared stories, and indulged in the delicious cuisine, creating an atmosphere of camaraderie and friendship. Following the hearty meal, the club seamlessly transitioned into its regular Toastmasters meeting, where members had the opportunity to showcase their communication and leadership skills. The Open House, left everyone with a sense of fulfillment and inspiration. The success and positive energy of this Open House have sparked a desire among club members for more such events.
