Camden Council has placed a new draft contribution scheme on public exhibition to provide more affordable rental housing locally.
The draft Western Sydney Regional Affordable Housing Contribution Scheme, prepared by the Western Sydney Planning Partnership (WSPP) with input from five Western Sydney councils, proposes contributions on certain new developments to assist in funding the construction of new affordable rental housing.
The draft Scheme is on public exhibition until 7 April 2025, allowing community feedback on whether or not this draft Scheme should be adopted in the Camden Local Government Area before a final decision is made.
Mayor of Camden, Cr Ashleigh Cagney, encouraged members of the community to share their thoughts.
"Housing affordability is a growing challenge in Camden and across Sydney," she said.
"I urge residents and stakeholders to share their feedback on this draft Scheme to address this issue during the public exhibition period."
Affordable rental housing provides lower-cost accommodation managed by not-for-profit housing providers. It is intended for essential workers, apprentices, single income families, pensioners, and others on very low, low and moderate incomes who need temporary or longterm support.
If the Scheme is adopted by Council, it would apply across the Camden Local Government Area (LGA), with contributions required at development approval for residential subdivisions, multi-unit housing, and major retail, commercial, and industrial developments over 1,000sqm.
Funds would be allocated to not-for-profit housing providers to build and maintain affordable rental housing, with safeguards in place to ensure affordable rental housing built under this Scheme is retained for existing and future generations.

If you’re an avid fisher in the Camden Local Government Area, then get fishing for some outdoor fun and take part in Council’s Hook, Line and Measure fishing competition.
The competition encourages the community to identify and record the species, size and distribution of fish caught and observed in the Nepean River and other local waterways in the Camden area, which will help inform Camden Council’s future waterways projects.
Mayor of Camden, Cr Ashleigh Cagney, said the competition was a wonderful opportunity for the community to get involved and have fun fishing, while helping to better understand our local waterways.
“Whether you’re a passionate fisher or fish for fun, I encourage everyone to take part in the Hook, Line and Measure competition, discover new fish species in our waterways, help inform Council about your catch and win some great prizes too,” she said.
Camden fishers through this competition will be encouraged to complete a submission form to record their catch and report this to Camden Council.
The competition has opened and closes on Sunday 27 April 2025. The winner will be contacted individually between Monday 28 April 2025 and Thursday 01 May 2025.
Each submission will be a single entry into the draw to win a $300 fishing related voucher and the first 50 people to make a submission will receive a unique Brag Mat, to help measure the size of your catch.
The data from these responses will then be presented on the Camden Open Data Portal with an interactive map and data table.
This program will assist Camden Council in providing a baseline dataset and will help the community identify productive recreational fishing areas. Despite this, the community has the option within a submission to keep their fishing location hidden with data only provided to Council.

Happy International Women’s Day!
I’m incredibly excited to announce that Gledswood Hills High School is open!
Every year, the Member for Camden recognises an outstanding local woman. This year, I nominated Frances Warner, a dedicated member of the community whose selfless devotion, constant support, and unwavering kindness to the people in this area has only improved it for the better.
After 12 years of delays and broken promises by the former Liberal government, the new temporary high school has been delivered.
Gledswood Hills High School will be operating out of Gregory Hills Primary School until 2027, when the permanent site for the high school is expected to open.
Frances spent considerable time volunteering in spaces like Oxley Cottage information centre, helping tourists, visitors, and residents, and working hard to put Camden on the map. She also served as a secretary for the Camden Scouts Group where her husband volunteered, crunching numbers, and organising events.
Land has also been chosen for the permanent site for Gledswood Hills High School.
As a former teacher, I know how important it is to have access to a great education at a local school, and I’m working hard to ensure that every child in our area is able to receive the best schooling experience they can.
Her most notable achievement, however, might be the 40 years of volunteering she invested into the Narellan Girl Guides Association. In her time, Frances was a unit helper, a member of the Parent Committee and in charge of Uniform at Narellan Girl Guides, as well as the Badge Secretary for Girl Guides groups across the state. She was also a Division Leader of Picton, Oakdale, Narellan and Camden Girl Guides, and the Camden District Leader.
The Minns Labor Government is getting on with the job of delivering much needed upgrades to 15 schools across Camden.
Even now, Frances is still volunteering – she gives up her weekends working with the Camden Historical Society, as well as numerous hours creating the wonderful displays at Narellan and Camden libraries, as well as the ones in Bowral Hospital. When she’s not volunteering, Frances spends her time knitting small items of comfort for her church and Carrington Nursing home, which bring immense cheer to residents, as well as poppies for the people of Camden to wear on Anzac and Remembrance Days.
These upgrades are part of the Minns Labor Government’s work to rebuild public education in NSW after 12 years of Liberal Government neglect.
Frances is an inspiration to our community. Her contributions are invaluable and inspire us all. Thank you for all your amazing work, Frances!
If there’s anything you’d like me to address on your behalf, or anything I can assist you with, don’t hesitate to contact me at my office on 4655 3333 or at camden@ parliament.nsw.gov.au.
Teacher vacancies have been slashed by over 40 percent in NSW public schools.
4655 3333
When the Minns Labor Government says that we want to ensure every student has access to a world class education, we mean it – and that’s proven right here in Camden.

Greenfield’s Development Company has lodged a development application with Camden Council for a major film and television studio in Oran Park’s Employment Zone.
Submitted on Friday, 28 February, the landmark project aims to expand Sydney’s screen production capacity, create jobs, and address a critical shortage of studio space, helping NSW remain a competitive destination for both international and local film projects.
Plans for Oran Park Studios include three large soundstages, production offices, working spaces for all departments and a multideck parking facility.
A project of this scale will require significant investment, and Greenfield’s Development Company will be looking at additional funding opportunities to bring this project to life.
The project will now undergo development assessment by Camden Council. Watch this space for more updates!
Camden Council, in partnership with Camden Police Area Command, has launched a community safety campaign – See Something. Say Something – which aims to improve reporting of crimes and anti-social behaviour, as well as improve community safety in local public spaces.
Mayor of Camden, Cr Ashleigh Cagney, said public spaces were essential to community life, whether they be parks, town centres, or residential areas.
“By supporting this campaign, we can foster a sense of community pride and ensure that everyone, especially families, elderly residents and young people, feel safe when using shared spaces,” she said.
Superintendent Paul Condon, Commander Camden Police Area Command, said issues such as vandalism, theft, and anti-social behaviour could make these areas feel unsafe.
“Our community safety campaign seeks to address these concerns by working with the community and Camden Council,” he said.
“Through this campaign we will be looking to the community to help us protect you from opportunist crime. This involves simple steps such as locking your car and homes when you’re not in them or not at home.
“We encourage the community to support this campaign by spreading the word and getting involved in reporting any crimes or anti-social behaviour,” he said.
“The message is clear – if you see something unusual or witness anti-social behaviour or a crime, say something. In a non-emergency event please call the Police Assistance Line on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. In an emergency, please call 000,” he said.

you’d have a pretty good idea of our heroine, Dawsyn Sabar. Dawsyn lives on the Ledge, a physically and morally colder version of Suzanne Collins’ District 13. A cruel, winged race of creatures called Glacians fly to the Ledge and supply the isolated humans with food in exchange for claiming a few souls to feed to the pool of Iskra, the source of the Glacians’ immortality. The Ledgedwellers also have no trouble terrorising and killing one another in the name of surviving the frost so vicious it could be alive.
Dawsyn has little left to lose when she is taken by the Glacians and witnesses the horrors of the pool firsthand. Just as her head is going under, she discovers that the Glacians are also cruel toward their own, especially the half-breeds offspring of humans and Glacians.
Enter Ryon, our tall, dark, handsome, winged hero who admires Dawsyn’s rage-fuelled determination to survive. They narrowly escape the clutches of the Glacians and flee to the Valley where Dawsyn meets Ryon’s merry band of misfits: a cheerful and wise bartender, an eccentric fashionista, and a mysterious mage. Together, they set out to convince the human queens to rescue the Ledge people.
On their adventure, Dawsyn’s frozen heart thaws, allowing her to feel love… and risk experiencing the crushing pain of grief.
If you like a slow-burn enemies-to-lovers fantasy romance full of secrets, lies, betrayals, murderous monarchs, a handful of heartbreaking deaths, high stakes, and cliffhangers, the Glacian trilogy is for you!
Ledge is the first book in a completed trilogy by Australian author, Stacey McEwan that you can binge before her newest book, ‘A Forbidden Alchemy’ is released in July.

Depression and disorders affecting one’s mood was found to affect 1.5 million Australians according to the 2020–2022 National Study of Mental Health and Wellbeing (NSMHW). According to the World Health Organization, depression is the leading cause of disability around the world. Depression can be described as a persistent sadness, but there are many symptoms that can be experienced, and depression can impact many body systems.
Thoughts of hopelessness, failure, pessimism and self-dislike are common. Sleep can often be disturbed, where one can feel extreme fatigue as well as have difficulty getting to or staying asleep. Appetite, energy levels, interest, motivation and feelings of pleasure can also be lowered. One’s ability to concentrate, remember dates or tasks, or make decisions, can also be impacted. Suffering haziness or mental fog is a common description. It is also common to experience anxiety along with depression. Sometimes the condition can come out of the blue, or may

occur following personal loss or trauma, or following an increase of stress. Seeking professional psychological treatment with someone who provides evidence based treatment can lead to better management of the symptoms and improved functioning.
Behaviour Changer- How to seek help
• Ask yourself do you often feel sad, numb, experience fatigue, suffer low energy or poor motivation
• Ask yourself whether these symptoms impact your ability to function at home, work or within your relationships
• Remember that depression is experienced by so many and asking for help is a strength not a weakness
• If you notice a friend or family member struggling, don’t be afraid to ask, ‘are you ok?’
• See your GP, to discuss your symptoms and whether a Mental Health Care Plan to attend a treating psychologist would be suitable

The new Management Committee for the 2025-2026 year has been elected for Oran Park Probus Club. It takes a lot of volunteers to manage the Club’s affairs, and to organise and coordinate all the Club’s activities and outings. As members age, every Probus Club needs to encourage new and younger members to join, some of whom will take on a more active role in the Management of the Club in the future.
Oran Park Probus Club is ready to welcome visitors and new members, unlike some Probus Clubs who have waiting lists. Why wait? There is no reason you can’t join another Club in the meantime. Once you have Probus membership, you can attend another Clubs’ meetings and events, depending on the numbers allowed at the venues and vacancies on trips. You can enjoy the fun and friendship that Probus is all about NOW, and, when a vacancy occurs at your preferred Club, you can then join if you wish.
The Oran Park Probus Club Committee looks for opportunities to promote the Club to members of the public. As a not-for-profit organisation, we are grateful for opportunities to get the word out to seniors. Probus could change their lives for the better! The Club held a membership stall at Oran Park Podium recently. Quite a few people had never heard about Probus, one actually mistaked Probus for a religious organisation, which we are not.
Probus is a worldwide movement in 23 countries. The success of the organisation is seen through the commitment of members and the wide recognition of Probus as a community service program. Probus originated in the United Kingdom in the1960s, where Clubs were originally formed to meet the social and intellectual needs of retired businessmen. The first Probus Club in the South Pacific region was the Probus Club of Kapiti Coast, New Zealand, in 1974. This was soon followed by the formation of the Probus Club of Hunters Hill, NSW, in 1976. Today, Probus Clubs throughout Australia and New Zealand are social clubs that offer fun and friendship to all members of the community who are retired or semi-retired. Probus provides retirees with the opportunity to connect socially, to make new friends and explore new interests and hobbies. At Oran Park Probus Club we offer a range of activities, including trips and outings for members to enjoy. Club members meet monthly, to enjoy the company of like-minded fellow retirees, listen to interesting guest speakers and enjoy lunch together after the meeting.
Meetings are held at Wests Lakeside Golf Club, 50 Raby Road, Gledswood Hills, commencing at 10.00am on the first Tuesday of every month, except January and November. Visitors are always welcome.
Please contact the Club Secretary for further details, email secretary.oranparkprobusclub@gmail.com
Every year, Easter comes around offering some public holidays to most of us at a time when the heat of Summer has passed, and the real chill of Winter has not yet fallen upon us. It’s the goldilocks time of the year – not too hot, yet not too cold – it’s the perfect time to enjoy a few days of freedom and rest from the daily grind.
Easter is a time of great significance to Christians, a celebration commemorating the resurrection of Jesus from the dead, as described in the New Testament. Although Easter traditions vary across the Christian world, most of the Christian churches in Australia will celebrate Easter with special services. Christian or not, most children are aware of the chocolate ‘easter eggs’, which are available everywhere, and great delight is found in hunting eggs and dreaming of the Easter Bunny, who often brings these eggs in the middle of the night while the family sleeps.
Easter brings its own special foods, besides chocolate eggs. Hot cross buns may have originated in medieval England, the cross on top symbolising the crucifixion, but putting a cross on top of bread has been a tradition that predates Christianity and was evident in ancient Egyptian times. It is associated now with Easter today, after an English monk decorated buns with a cross on Good Friday in the 12th century. Queen Elizabeth I, declared they should be only available on Good Friday, and at funerals, but those days are long gone as the buns hit the shelves as soon as the Australia Day merchandise is cleared. Some people note they have spotted the edible goodies for sale as soon as the Christmas tinsel has been packed away!
While traditional buns sported the cross, with fruits and spices, these days supermarkets have run with the idea, offering buns with chocolate, rocky road, toffee, and even Vegemite flavourings, as well as the traditional dried fruits and spices. Although I am yet to forget the attempt to sell Vegemite chocolate, and debate rages between the traditional and the new flavours, we can all enjoy our favourites.
It doesn’t matter how or why you celebrate Easter, it’s meaning is clear: it’s a time of new beginnings, a time for family, a time for hope. It’s a moment to catch your breath and take some time out to consider your own new beginnings, a time to find some hope for your future, and a time to rest and care for your family and friends.

Laps Run Club (Laps RC) is making waves in the Camden and Campbelltown communities with its inclusive and supportive approach to running. Founded by Kevin Kumar, Laps RC has grown rapidly, welcoming runners of all levels and creating a positive space for people to challenge themselves, improve their fitness, and connect with others.
While the idea for Laps RC was conceived nearly a year ago, it has only been open to the public for less than six months. The club's rapid growth has been astounding. “It’s so hard to believe when seeing how insanely fast and big this is getting,” said Kevin. What started as a personal journey with a group of friends preparing for the 14km City2Surf race has now become a thriving community for runners and walkers alike.
Laps RC operates weekly at Raby, and hosts pop-up events in different locations to engage a broader audience. The most recent event in Harrington Park took place on Sunday, March 2nd, in collaboration with Performance Personal Training. The event was a massive success, drawing over 150 participants— Laps RC’s biggest turnout yet.
With support from Australian sportswear brand LSKD, attendees competed in a 5km time trial, with prizes awarded to top male and female runners as well as the most improved members. Kevin highlighted the club’s inclusivity: “Just because we are a run club doesn’t mean you have to run. Almost half our members come weekly just to walk or bring their dogs or children.”
For Kevin, Laps RC is about much more than running—it’s about accessibility and support. “Having a coach and going to the gym can be super pricey, and not everyone has that luxury. That’s why my Laps RC partner Justin and I created this group. We are a free weekly run club, and we put massive emphasis on just showing up.”
Laps RC welcomes all fitness levels, from beginners taking their first steps to experienced runners tackling marathons. Some members who had never run before are now completing half and full marathons, while others are pushing their limits with ultra-endurance challenges.
“No matter who you are and what your goals are, we are a supportive and fun group and will welcome anyone wanting to join,” said Kevin.
For more information find Laps RC on Facebook or Instagram.

Angus Steakhouse, there’s something for every Show adventurer!
“We’re encouraging everyone to come on down, escape the everyday, and immerse themselves in everything that makes the Show special – the hardworking farmers who produce our food and fibre, exciting rides, competitions, and family traditions.
“Family tickets are available for just $118 during our Early Bird period, offering great value for a full day of family fun in Sydney, with 12 hours of entertainment, competitions, exhibits, and activities.
“There are great savings to be made with Early Bird ticket prices and discounts on carnival credits via the Easter Show Fun Pass, so be sure to get in early and start planning your happiest day out!”

Mr Wilton said as Australia’s largest agricultural classroom, the Show gives visitors of any age a chance to celebrate agricultural excellence and learn more about the origins of their food and fibre.
“The 2025 Show will host over 10,000 events across 80 animal and exhibitor competitions during the 12 days of Show, including the 125th competition of the iconic Districts Exhibit Displays,” Wilton said.
“This year, we’re set to welcome over 13,000 animals across 400 different breeds to the Show, with 6,000 exhibitors all vying it out for an average of 15,000 ribbons, trophies, medallions, and special prizes.
“As an event run by a not-for-profit organisation, visitors are not only supporting Australian farmers by attending the Show but are actively investing in vital initiatives supporting our country’s agriculture sector.”

After a mild Summer, this month sees the real beginning of the cooler season, and I write this as we’re watching Ex Tropical Cyclone Alfred throwing some of the wet stuff around up the coast. For those who wondered, we looked it up – “Ex” is used when a cyclone occurs outside the tropics.
We are still waiting for the Federal Election to be announced, and all we can say for sure is that it will be held on or before 17 May. Voting is compulsory in Australia – something we share with Argentina – and it is a privilege not everyone in the world has. Please be aware that although the District Gazette accepts paid advertising from local candidates, it does not recommend any politician or party over another.
We hope our readers get to take some time off over Easter this month, and whether you are fishing, boating, camping or otherwise holidaying, or just staying at home and relaxing, remember to take care of each other and our environment.
But right now, we hope you can take a few moments out of your busy schedule to find out what’s happening in our local community and enjoy your District Gazette!
