UK Look Book | SXSW 2021
Foreword The Department for International Trade (DIT) is delighted to be back at SXSW. We’re incredibly proud to showcase companies that represent the best of UK creativity and innovation. We hope you’ll get to know as many of them as possible.
Debbie Adler Head of Creative Industries and Digital Media Sector, North America Department for International Trade
2020’s unique challenges have only affirmed the creative sector’s enduring power to transport and connect us beyond our own four walls. From novel AR and VR technologies embedded in games, film and TV, to agencies that are shaping our relationships with our favourite brands – the UK companies on our 2021 trade mission are charting an ambitious path into the future. DIT, along with several incredible partners, will host the 2021 British Music Embassy (BME) where we’ll present the best up-and-coming British musicians and bands. While we will not congregate in a physical space for beer and breakfast tacos, this year’s VR-enabled BME platform will show how immersive technologies enable us to experience an interactive virtual world that has deep cadences with our real one. In addition to the main SXSW Conference, DIT is joining with UK partners to invite you to its UK House fringe programme. Come register for our free series sessions that will demonstrate British thought leadership across a range of topics in the creative industry: www.theUKHouse.com
UK Look Book | SXSW 2021
An Overview of the UK’s Creative Industries The UK’s reputation for flair, talent and imagination comes from the combination of our rich cultural heritage and cutting-edge creative companies. This lies at the crux of our international success. The UK creative sector has been outpacing the rest of the UK economy two-fold in recent years. Despite challenges caused by COVD19, the creative sector will play a central role in Britain’s future prosperity. Innovative companies thrive in the UK for many reasons: from incredible talent that has been educated at world’s top universities to the culture of creativity that arises from collaboration across industries. Businesses of every size – including design, film and TV, VFX, immersive technologies, music, games, and publishing – benefit from the UK government’s commitment to their growth. The government offers a number of programmes that directly benefit the creative industries, including:
• An R&D Tax Credit for small and mediumsized companies that are pushing the boundaries of new technology; • The Global Entrepreneur Programme (GEP) for non-UK entrepreneurs of innovative technology companies that want to relocate their headquarters to the UK; • Tax Reliefs for Film, High-End TV, Animation, Children’s TV, and Games for content that qualifies as British, which can also be applied to post-production and visual effects; and • The Tradeshow Access Programme (TAP) Grants that subsidize the direct costs of attending certain conferences and tradeshows with DIT. • Government-backed finance or insurance from UK Export Finance (UKEF), the UK’s export credit agency. We encourage you to look deeper into all of these programmes and follow up with us to ask how your company might benefit from them – either as a British business expanding overseas, or as a company looking to invest in the UK.

Building the most accurate source of global music songs data in the world using bespoke technology and machine learning.
How we do it – graph search technology
Blokur has developed a new graph search technology developed to tackle the challenges of consolidating song data from different entities. The result is that Blokur is able to generate more candidates for matches and match them with a greater level of accuracy. That means fewer duplicate songs, fewer missed conflicts and more successful matches between works and recordings — all driving at more revenue for music right-holders.
Some ways we are applying our technology to solve problems and benefit labels, publishers, creators, platforms: LIVESTREAMING project underway with one of the industry’s leading MRT solutions.
This collaboration identifies the music performed in DJ live-streams, matches the recording to works data and provides the resulting data to PROs/CMOs, to enable accurate reporting and pay-through to the writers and creators
MATCHING Project underway with large publisher/label with 8m copyrights and 2.5m
recordings; to match, clean, dedupe works and recordings data, find ISRC-ISRW matches, ensure society registrations can be corrected, missing revenues from performance income allocated and process 3rd party usage reporting
MLC/HFA DATA QUALITY INITIATIVE preferred partner. Working with publishers to
match their data against the MLC database, surface discrepancies, duplicate ISWC, IPI and HFA identifiers to create accurate mechanicals reporting and accounting
LICENSING MESSENGER Publishing rights clearances for synch pros, labels and music users.
This feature enables license requests from 10+million songs direct to publishers through Blokur, via a simple-to-use template. One-click submit the request and the correct publisher(s) connect with the user directly to negotiate a license Contact: Silvia Montello, Head of Business Development. +44 (0)7810 852432
