First opened in 1936, Grimsby Central Hall is the oldest surviving continuous concert venue in North East Lincolnshire and yet, for many, it remains an undiscovered gem. Step through featureless doors in Duncombe Street and, like crossing the threshold of the Tardis, an expanded world unravels before you. You’ll encounter a 700 seat auditorium that retains original art deco features and offers the finest acoustics in the area plus

Glory nights at The Central Hall
A unique Iron Maiden show, Slade rock the hall & Sharon Osbourne drops by Over the course of its long history, the Central Hall has played host to many of the biggest stars in the world of popular music – from John Lee Hooker to Adam and The Ants and one of the people responsible for bringing many of the biggest names to the venue is Stephen Stanley, founder of Solid Entertainments. Stephen started Solid in 1979 and still holds a fabulous archive of memorabilia – including tickets and promotional materials from many big star names and of course a big
store of great memories. The Grimsby Central Hall clearly holds a very special place in his heart and he has many tales to tell of gigs

when Iron Maiden rocked the stage not once but twice – including the only time they ever performed without a lead vocalist. He couldn’t take to the stage due to ill health but the Maiden didn’t want to disappoint their fans so they played the gig without him and kept their promise to come back to grace The Central Hall again and perform for just £1 per ticket! Stephen also remembers a particular gig by Slade with special affection. They almost brought the house down when they performed to a sell out 700 strong audience in 1980. At this time, their career was in the doldrums following their unsuccessful attempts to break into the American market but their Central Hall show really rocked. It was no surprise to anyone who saw them that night
when the following year they took centre stage at Reading, headlining at short notice after Ozzy Osbourne pulled out, and resurrecting their careers in a single unforgettable show. From Mr Osbourne Stephen’s thoughts go directly to an evening when the great Gary Moore was performing and a chauffeur driven Rolls Royce pulled up outside the main doors. Out stepped a petite, fashionably dressed young woman.

It was Sharon Arden - the daughter of Don Arden of Jet Records. She slipped in and stood at the back for a couple of songs – then her exit was as swift and unobtrusive as her entrance - she was clearly happy with her most recent signing. Gary Moore went on to superstardom of course along with other Jet Records acts such as the legendary Ozzy Osbourne who Sharon Arden was later to marry. Other great artists Stephen remembers strutting their stuff across the Central Hall stage include Bucks Fizz, Def Leppard, Saxon, The Stray Cats and a whole lot more. He clearly has many more memories to share – and of course, with Solid Entertainments he’s still at the very heart of the local music scene so no doubt there are many new ones yet to be made!

THE VILLIERS QUARTET
A CEILIDH WITH THE LITTLE BAND
At the forefront of innovation and creativity in music, the Villiers Quartet continues to define the string quartet for the 21st century. The VQ has become known for its masterful interpretations of works by English composers such as Elgar, Delius and Alan Bush. The programme will include works by Haydn, Beethoven, Elgar and Frank Bridge. The VQ makes its New York debut in October 2013 and is supported by the Bush and Delius Trusts.
This will be a lively night of traditional tunes from Ireland, Scotland and England featuring celebrated local folk ensemble The Little Band, with the added bonus of fun and joviality. The rhythm will prove infectious and the allure of the dance floor irresistible, as the caller helpfully leads you through the dances. The event is organised by the Humber Belles and local charity Harbour Place will receive a donation from the evening’s proceeds.

A very special concert performance of Bizet’s Carmen to an accompaniment arranged by our good friends, the renowned piano duo, Anthony Goldstone and Caroline Clemmow. No one who heard their spirited arrangements for Smetana’s The Bartered Bride two years ago could forget the sheer verve and exhilaration in their playing and the lift it gave to the singers. We are confident they will dramatically enhance the appeal of this popular work.
Kimon Parry was a prize winner at the Royal College of Music and the Royal Academy of Music. He has played on a number of occasions with the major London Orchestras. Antony Ingham was also a prize winner at the RCM and RAM. He has worked as official accompanist for the orchestra of St Martin in the Fields, the RAM, London College of Music and the Purcell School. Antony has also given solo performances at several major London venues.

TRAVELLING BY TUBA
A special night for lovers of Mozart as, under the direction of Neville Turner - their resident conductor since the 1970’s - Grimsby Symphony Orchestra will perform Mozart’s Flute and Harp Concerto in C major. This will be the highlight of the evening’s programme and will feature guest soloists Kathryn South and Eleanor Turner. It is possibly the first performance of the concerto in this area and one that music lovers will not wish to miss.
A unique performance, definitely not just a tuba recital! With an array of wind and brass instruments, the duo gave over 200 performances last year. They have performed at venues including the Bridgewater Hall and St David’s Hall as well as touring in Canada and throughout Europe. Expect music from classical to jazz, humorous anecdotes and informative chat (plus a flavour of Christmas to go with the mince pies) - something for everyone in a real night to remember.

Central Hall Information Booking information To book by telephone ring 01472 355 025 from Tue – Sat 10.30am – 2.30pm (excluding bank holidays) or book in person by calling into our Box Office at Grimsby Central Hall, Duncombe St, Grimsby DN32 7EG (opening times as above and 45 minutes prior to start of show) Payment methods Tickets may be purchased using any major debit/credit card or by cash for visitors to our box office. We do not accept cheques nor impose any booking fees. Access for all The Hall has accessible toilets on the ground floor, stair lift to the first floor for access to the Main Hall Circle and Roy Kemp Recital Room and infra red
hearing system in Main Hall. Guide/hearing dogs are welcome. Wheelchair spaces are available - if you wish to book one please tell us at the time of purchasing your tickets. Our venue has character and some seats have limited legroom. If this could detract from your comfort, please inform us when booking your tickets. Not sure how to find us? Just head for Freeman Street and turn down Duncombe Street. The doors to the Hall are on your left, almost opposite the junction with Werneth Road. In the daytime there is some parking available outside the Hall - in the evenings we advise using the NELC car park.
