Welcome to
Grimsby Central Hall the home of real music
First opened in 1936, Grimsby Central Hall is the oldest surviving continuous concert venue in North East Lincolnshire and yet, for many, it remains an undiscovered gem. Step through featureless doors in Duncombe Street and, like crossing the threshold of the Tardis, an expanded world unravels before you. You’ll encounter a 700 seat auditorium that retains original art deco features and offers the finest acoustics in the area plus
a 200 seat recital room. Place your ear to the walls; you may hear the lingering echoes of some legendary performers. For more than 75 years, the Central Hall has hosted concerts by an amazing array of world class artistes, reflecting a diversity of entertainment; from swing bands to brass bands, rock groups to classical recitals, jazz, choral, orchestral and stage musicals. It’s no wonder we consider this venue to be the home of real music, and our commitment to musical diversity continues with

Do you sometimes feel like singing? Well don’t hold back!
The Central Hall presents
A Choral Spectacular Richard Strauss famously described the human voice as, “the most beautiful instrument of all” and this year’s Choral Spectacular will see an “orchestra” of almost 200 voices take to the stage. The brainchild of Richard Markham (below), this biennial choral event is a benefit concert in aid of the Grimsby Central Hall Trust and those taking part give their services free.
This year the concert will feature contributions from Grimsby and Cleethorpes Ladies Choir, Grimsby Philharmonic Society (right), the Humber Belles (above right) and the Orpheus Male Voice Choir.
Pop
One of the evening’s highlights will see the four choirs uniting for a series of traditional Lincolnshire folk songs, which, of course, would be incomplete without a rousing version of the Lincolnshire Poacher. Richard Markham, the Grimsby born international concert pianist who will be playing during the concert, has specially arranged these songs, originally transcribed by Percy Grainger, for this massed choir.
Any event billed as a “Spectacular” must contain one or two surprises and this concert will be no exception! The finale will embrace a Last Night Of The Proms feel featuring an appearance by the celebrated soprano Frances Brookes in the guise of that most patriotic of icons, Britannia. It will be an evening of sparkling entertainment and Saturday 15th March is one date all music lovers should pencil in their diaries.

The Ragdolls
Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons Tribute The Ragdolls will take you on a musical journey through the career of one of the most successful bands of all time, Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons, as they recreate the iconic sound of the Jersey Boys with classic songs such as, Sherry, Walk Like a Man, Oh What a Night and many more... In the first part of the show, with slick choreography and the trademark falsetto, the Boys take you back to where it all began, recreating cover versions of 50’s songs including hits such as, Still Of The Night, Oh Carol, Teenager In Love and Why Do Fools Fall in Love. The second half of the show is truly party
time, as all the famous hits come out including Can’t Take My Eyes Off You, Ragdoll, Walk Like A Man, Grease, and many more. The show, featuring a live band, leads up to a truly roof blowing finale where the red jackets come out and the Central Hall will be electrified with that good old 50’s flair, a medley of songs that will have you dancing and singing in the aisles. This is a show you do not want to miss!

The Nick Ross Orchestra Sounds Of The Glenn Miller Era
The lights soften, the mood settles, the audience waits expectantly. The band is poised, relaxed, but with eyes anxious for the lead. Then we hear the first notes of Moonlight Serenade and the night is suddenly full and timeless. Some just watch and listen, some tap a shy finger to the melodies, others follow with a silent foot beat. Still others murmur softly through the lyrics, and some simply permit a fleeting smile. But common to all are memories. Recapture a bygone era as the Nick Ross Orchestra presents an unmissable evening of music and song – the classic Big Band Sound of the 1940’s.

Lionel Bart From rags to riches and back, songwriter Lionel Bart’s life embraced extreme highs and lows but his music is enduring. Remembered as the father of the modern British musical he first found fame writing pop hits in the 1950’s. He penned Cliff Richard’s first number one, Living Doll, wrote hits for Tommy Steele and Adam Faith and Matt Monro recorded his title song for the James Bond movie

Saturday 25th January
From Russia With Love. He first entered the world of stage musicals with Lock Up You Daughters, soon followed by the cockney flavoured Fings Ain’t Wot They Used T’Be. However, it was in 1960 he struck gold with Oliver! and the huge success in London was soon repeated on Broadway. Blitz!, his wartime tale of life in London’s East End was, at the time, the most expensive musical ever
produced in the West End. Unfortunately, the Midas touch deserted him and a combination of drugs, alcohol and depression caused his life to spiral out of control. The man who reputedly once earned £10,000 a week was declared bankrupt. But we remember Lionel Bart, for his ability to write memorable songs, amazing for a man who could not read or write music. Join Silhouettes Musical Theatre this May for their production of Blitz! and rediscover Lionel Bart’s unique gift.

The Central Hall invites you to
Sing yourself happy! Due in part to Gareth Malone’s successful series of BBC programmes, including his involvement with the Military Wives Choir, there has been a resurgence of interest in choral singing. As Gareth says, “There’s something to suit everybody, but you have to get out there and find what’s right for you.” Here in NE Lincolnshire, there’s no shortage of choice and over the next few months there are plenty
of opportunities to see and hear many of our local choirs in concert. So, if you have ever felt tempted to unleash that inner Pavarotti or to let Katherine Jenkins emerge why not abandon the shower cubicle, take the first step and come along to some of these concerts. Just flicking through the pages of this brochure will highlight the range of choice on offer; from mixed to single sex choirs and from the syncopating
rhythms of barbershop singing to the formality of the classical repertoire. Joining a group that favours musical theatre will allow you to sing, dance and act to your heart’s content. Of course, singing is great fun but it is also a healthy activity, can help reduce stress, improve well-being, allow you to feel calmed, uplifted and energised. These choirs all guarantee a warm welcome, so get in touch and discover that song in your heart.

O
Not sure how to find us? Just head for Freeman Street and turn down Duncombe Street. The doors to the Hall are on your left, almost opposite the junction with Werneth Road. In the daytime there is some parking available outside the Hall - in the evenings we advise using the NELC car park.
