Finally on Wednesday 3rd July at 7.30pm students from Caistor Grammar School will explore the work of the First World war poets and examine what these poems mean to them. Easter

You always know when Easter’s on the way because the shops suddenly fill up with eggs. It usually starts on December 27th. But do you ever stop to wonder just why it is that eggs should be the essential symbol of this most holy Christian festival? After all there’s no mention of Easter eggs of any kind in the Bible. The tradition appears to have begun among the early Christians of Mesopotamia who took to dyeing eggs red to symbolise the blood shed by Christ. Because an egg looks dead but gives forth life it came to be symbolic of the tomb from which Jesus rose. In 1610 Pope Paul V officially adopted the egg as a symbol of

Once you’ve found your eggs the fun doesn’t have to stop there - you can now try a spot of egg rolling! There are lots of places in England where egg rolling takes place annually. The idea is pretty simple, you all take your eggs up to the top of a hill and then race them down. The most famous egg rolling event in the world is held on the flat on the White House lawn in Washington. It was inaugurated by Dolly Madison (wife of President James Madison) in 1814 and has been held almost every year since. Finally, when you’ve found your egg and rolled it you can always try fighting with it! Egg tapping or

How do you like your eggs? Rolled, hidden or jarped? Easter and resurrection. There is also a link between eggs and the observation of Lent. Since eggs could not be eaten during the forty days of Lent they had to be eaten by Shrove Tuesday - hence the tradition of pancake making. At the end of Lent came Easter, and eggs were back on the menu! Egg decorating is a feature of many cultures throughout the world but there are also a variety of games which people like to play with their eggs at Easter. One of the best known is egg hunting where eggs are hidden and children sent to scout them out. It need not be that simple however. In 1985 in Homer, Georgia, a small town of only 900 people, 80,000 eggs were hidden - the biggest ever Easter egg hunt.

egg jarping is a sort of conkers played with boiled eggs (with the eggs hand held, not on strings), and the competitors bang their eggs together to try and inflict damage on their opponent’s egg while leaving their own intact. The world championship is held at Peterlee Cricket Club in County Durham but for serious egg jarping you need to travel to Marksville, Louisiana. They take it very seriously - with teams of egg examiners are on hand at every competition to stop

cheating from taking place. In the past there have been eggs filled with concrete, Guinea Fowl eggs (which have stronger shells) have been substituted for chicken and they have also had to introduce rules about how the eggs should be boiled - blunt end down so that the air pocket is at the pointed end! After the competition the eggs have to be eaten to prove that they’re not fake. So there you go - plenty of things to do with your eggs. Have fun this Easter whatever you get up to, and don’t eat too much chocolate!

Your Garden In

Spring

For many of us March marks the time of year when we start to think about getting the shed open and doing some work in the garden. It’s all very well reading lots of articles about how many vital jobs there are to be done in the dead of winter, but when there’s a nice warm fire and a cup of tea indoors it can be hard to pull them wellies on and go play in the mud. By this time of year things have changed and with snowdrops and crocuses in bloom and green shoots poking through everywhere you look it can be a real pleasure to get outside for some serious work. So what should be our main priorities for March and April? For flower gardeners it’s time for dividing clumps of perennials - using two forks back to back is the old fashioned way but it’s still the best. Then there are summer flowering bulbs to go in - our good friends up at Alford’s Garden Centre will be pleased

to advise you on what’s available. Plants that you’ve grown for the winter colour of their stems need like dogwood and willow need cutting back and you can finish the pruning of wisteria and summer flowering clematis. And of course there are always the weeds to deal with - this is the time of year when they come back in force! In the vegetable garden it’s time to plant onions, shallots and early potatoes and later in the month it may be warm enough to start outdoor sowings of peas and broad beans. You can also start the first sowings of summer cut and come again salads such as rocket and mustard although these will benefit from the protection of a cloche or frame. Light occasional lawn mowing can begin and fish feeding too - soon pond heaters can be turned off and your pond will become active again.

How important is home ownership? Well more important than marriage and children for a start!

In association with J Roach Roofing Services

We all know how difficult it is nowadays to get a foot on the property ladder, and how hard people work and save to make that big step but new research has cast an interesting light on just how important owning your own home really is. In a survey of 2,500 people in the UK who were looking to move when asked to rate the level of importance of home ownership, the vast majority (83%) of home buyers rated it as eight or above out of 10. By contrast, only 60% attributed the same level of importance to marriage and just 59% to having children! Apart from general happiness, which came top (93%), the two aspirations that came close to home ownership were job satisfaction (77%) and job security (82%). So there you go - if someone accuses you of not having your priorities right, you’ll know what to tell them.

Property on the market? It can be a frustrating time. Your home is on display - exteriors and interiors. So what steps can you take to get your home....

Moving home can be exciting, but that can often be outweighed by the stress that comes with selling an existing property. It’s not like the old days when you could just sit back and let the estate agents take the strain, today if you want to sell your house you have to be proactive about showing it off to the world. And it’s not just a question of having a quick tidy up when a viewing is due. You never know when a prospective purchaser might be driving by and with mortgages becoming ever harder to get it is increasingly a buyers’ market, with more houses available than there are prospective purchasers. To sell your home it needs to be looking its best, inside and out. There are ways to make the process go more smoothly however and here, courtesy of Barratt’s the home builders we offer some tips on making

your property sell. According to Barratt’s first impressions are crucial. The first thing that people see when they come to a viewing is the exterior of the house, so make sure that the front and rear gardens look tidy and presentable. You could also invest in colourful plants which help to make your home look even more homely. Clean exterior paintwork and a smart looking garage are good selling points too, as are signs of exterior security having been put in place. Once inside the home Barratt’s top tips to increase property value and attract potential purchasers are first and foremost - cleaning. Remove all clutter from view and give every room in the house a thorough clean, dust and tidy, as this gives the impression that the property has been taken care of. Take care of any lingering food odours and if you have pets send them away to a friends for the day. Their second priority is painting. A fresh layer of paint on the walls is one of the most effective ways to revitalize a property. If you are considering re-painting it’s best to stick to neutral colours as this will make your property look brighter and more spacious. New blinds and the replacement of tired old bathroom and kitchen units will help as well. Lastly depersonalise your home! Home buyers need to be able to imagine living in your house, so keep the number of family photographs to a minimum. It’s the building that’s on sale - not your life there. So best of luck with the move. We hope that if you follow these simple steps it will all go just that bit more easily!

Just imagine the fun you can have matching the paintwork to these fabulous fabrics! The secret to working with these colours is simply to throw the rule book out of the window and let your instincts take control. Fancy a spot of orange and purple? Go for it. Do you have a vision of your bedroom would look in apple green and fuchsia. Get that emulsion bought and get cracking! The only thing limiting your scope is your imagination and daring.

Don’t be shy! This year’s top hair styles are bold and eye catching - after all it is your .....

Crowning Glory There are no prizes for being timid with your look this year - big and bold is the order of the day! Bright colours, big curls and gorgeous plaits have all featured on the catwalk models at London and Paris and they’ll be appearing in your local salon very soon. So if you’re looking to get ahead of the style curve here are our picks of the new year trends as identified by stylist Ken Picton. Above we have the big beehive - just like a regular beehive but placed more towards the front of the head for maximum volume and movement. Created by forward combing from the crown and wrapping the hair strands around a pinned bun ring, this style can then be tousled by hand to make for a more casual look than the usual beehive. Below left the chunky plait. Plaits were in last year and they look set to continue into 2013. The big difference is that this year they will be bigger and looser, and pinned to the scalp to create sculptural effects without excessive formality. To create a softer more ethereal feel to the style take fine strands of hair out of the plaits to give movement in the hair. A great look for the party season! Last but not least - top right

Beauty

we have the bouncy curls look. This season’s trend is for super glam shiny curls rather than rough textured curls (they’re so last year) – autumnal reds will be popular but they need to be extra shiny. This look can be achieved with medium tongs, always wrapping in the same direction. Remember to direct the curls away from your face at the hairline and when you’ve done run your fingers through to create a slightly tousled effect. So there you have it - three great looks to choose from or you can go wild and come up with your own. Just remember - don’t be shy and you won’t go far wrong!

It’s great to be part of a couple but in today’s busy busy world it can be hard finding that special someone. An introduction agency can help. The main question to ask is would you prefer to go ....

Online or Offline? Good advice from Gill Crowley of TLC Introductions

Many people look for love online, but can a relationship formed on the internet really work in the real world or is traditional offline dating better for forming a long-term relationship? Online dating offers a quick and easy way of getting to meet someone but without face to face contact there can be pitfalls. People can be who they want to be when chatting online, which is fine until the first meeting but then if people have been less than honest about themselves things can get tricky. When the other person realises that you are not like the picture they had built up in their mind, (or even like the picture you emailed them!) it can be awkward and the conversation may not flow as easily as it did online. The reason is that you have both formed an unrealistic

impression of who you really are as real people. In the face to face world we have so much more information about each other to rely on. We pick up non-verbal cues about other people from their facial expressions, mannerisms and body language which helps us to learn about them and to decide if we like them or not. When everything takes place online we are unable to use this instinctive knowledge of people and how they act. This can be misleading, possibly even dangerous. With offline dating, the relationship begins with the first meeting, so you don’t waste time getting to know someone who may not be attractive to you, though you are likely to have chatted on the phone first. First impressions count, so you quickly

form an opinion about whether this person is someone you’d like to meet again. Offline dating agencies hold personal details of clients on file, making it difficult for clients to pretend that they are someone they are not, which gives added security. Online dating sites can be anonymous, making it easy for unscrupulous people to take advantage. Whichever method you choose, you should follow safety procedures, take things slowly and make sure you are comfortable with what you are doing but be assured that there really is someone for everyone and romance and a lasting relationship is waiting for you! Spotlight On

ROSACEA

with Dr Jo Ojadi of The Grimsby Skin Health Clinic In the last issue I look at skin health in general and at the emotional and physical consequences of poor skin condition. In this article I would like to look in more detail at a condition which affects almost one in ten people in the UK – rosacea. Rosacea is a chronic condition characterised by facial erythema flushing or redness on either side of the face, especially the nose and cheeks. It can affect anyone, although it is three times more likely to affect women. Thickened blood vessels may be visible beneath the skin and sometimes there will be lumpy spots on the face which may look at first sight like acne. The first signs of rosacea may be a tendency to flush or blush easily and the skin in the affected areas may itch severely. Rosacea can also cause lumps or pustules to develop around the nose, chin or forehead. Doctors call this rhinophyma and it can be very distressing for the patient. In severe cases rosacea can

also affect the eyes, leading to soreness, dryness and inflammation. The eyes may feel gritty and the eyelids become prone to infection. In some cases it may be a short term problem but it can persist and it can be distressing for the sufferer. Rosacea can flare up as a result of anything which warms the skin including hot showers and saunas, hot drinks, spicy foods, alcohol and exercise. Symptoms can be managed to some extent by avoiding these causal factors. Using protection from the sun and avoiding oil based face creams will also help. Some skin treatments such as micro dermabrasion and chemical peels may contribute to the onset of rosacea. Doctors may also prescribe special antibiotics, either to be taken orally or applied directly to the affected area (these are known as topical antibiotics). There have been several important advances in treatment in recent years including the use

of vascular laser treatment and intense pulse light therapy to clear the swollen blood vessels beneath the skin. In very serious cases surgical intervention may be necessary particularly where the nose has become badly swollen. So if you notice that your facial skin is reddening then don’t ignore it. Consult your GP as

soon as possible because the sooner you are diagnosed the sooner and more effectively treatment can begin. Rosacea is a condition which can get worse over time if it is ignored so don’t worry that you might be wasting the doctor’s time – it’s better to be safe than sorry. With more and more shopping for services being done on line how can local firms compete with the online giants? By making the most of dealing ....

The UK is the world’s leader when it comes to internet shopping. 60% of us bought something over the net last year and between us we spent a whopping £70 billion. That’s a lot of packages for the couriers and a lot of money for the online firms. So how can local businesses hope to compete against the enormous buying power of the rising tide of web based multinationals? We’d suggest that there are three ways to go - expertise, reputation and customer care. Expertise because when you buy over the web you don’t really know who you’re dealing with. They’re faceless. Will they be able to give you advice if you need it? Or are they just paid to sit in a call centre and read from a script?

face to face

You’ve no way of knowing, but with a local firm you have the opportunity to discuss your needs and make sure you’re making the right choices. And if you’re in any doubt you can always ask around - because with a local business there is every chance that someone you know will have had dealings with them in the past. And there’s nothing more reassuring than a personal recommendation! In the end what it boils down to is customer care. With a local firm you can give them a ring and they can call round or you

‘I never got mugged so don’t exaggerate.’ It was no good, I could say what I liked but the version of events set to become gospel was relayed to Dad who did his best to express the necessary indignation. ‘Seriously Bob, it’s not on!’ Mum continued. Dad and I twisted our hands to demonstrate our ineffectualness. My bus fare was gone and Dad wanted his tea, not a trawl around town after an individual who would be long gone. Mum set down plates of stew in a fury that included both of us. Even the food looked cross, I thought. Dad opened his mouth to speak but snapped it shut as further speculation as to the criminal nature of the miscreant who had ‘robbed’ me flew from Mum’s mouth. I marvelled at her imaginative prowess and wished the incident had truly been as dramatic as she was stating. My sisters appeared at the table as Mum pronounced her verdict of guilty as charged against me. ‘What’s she done now?’ said Katrina, keen for an

update on my fecklessness. ‘Your sister was mugged but she and your father seem unconcerned about it.’ Katrina grinned and I knew that later I would have to explain that a short woman with a limp had convinced me her need for my bus fare was greater than mine. I had felt sorry for her and handed over eighty-five pence. Mum announced to the assembled family that I didn’t have the sense I was born with and that I had allowed myself to be ‘conned by a pack of lies.’ She would never have known anything had I not been an hour late home and therefore subject to an interrogation. My kindness appeared to have netted me nothing but a long walk. Four year-old Louise looked at me and smiled before spooning stew into her mouth. Not missing a beat Mum said, ‘Louise’s got more sense than you!’ Dejected I set about eating. In my Dad’s eyes I read his wish that I would stop my random acts of social service, not because he disapproved of them but because they so outraged my mother.

If Books Had Wings

Adrienne Silcock

If books had wings they would fly out of library and shop cross byway and flyover track highways, plot-driven; they would land in hospital, on operating table sneak into patient’s stomach and heart, for immediate absorption. If books had wings they would fly into restaurant and kitchen become Dickens’ smoothies or Browning’s brownies Chaucer chips or Penguin pasties, for easy digestion. If books had wings they would fly into sports halls do fiction flips and front tucks inward dives and verb twists in swimming pools

Adrienne Silcock published her first novel Vermin (Flambard Press) in 2000. Her poetry and stories have appeared in a range of small press, such as Dreamcatcher, Prole, Ink on Paper, Other Poetry, Miracle and Clockwork. Her second novel Controlling Aphrodite was shortlisted for the Virginia Prize 2009. As a taster of her work we offer her poem If Books Had Wings.

Writing

If books had wings there’d be copies of Agatha Christie and Kathryn Stockett in stairwells JK Rowling and Terry Pratchett in alleyways; Barbara Cartland would cavort with Umberto Eco somewhere above a dance floor; Adichie and Updike would meet mid-air Shakespeare would tell jokes to Enid Blyton Robbins, Steel and Sheldon would go boating and the Quran and the Bible would marry. The whole sky would become a mulligatawny of books …if books had wings.

Take Care In Those Tunnels!

“tunnels can be dangerous places, save your life, not your car” to take off your sunglasses as they will hinder your eyesight in the dim light of a tunnel. Take them off well in advance - or you may find that for the first few seconds you are driving blind! Once you are in the tunnel you should turn on dipped headlights. Do not use full beam as this will dazzle other motorists. Don’t exceed the speed limit and leave plenty of room between yourself and the car in front. Keep an eye out for the location of emergency pedestrian exits just in case you may need one. In two-way tunnels you should keep well to the nearside kerb and do not change lanes unless instructed to. If you do break down switch on your hazard lights immediately. Try to coast to a breakdown lay-by. If none are available, stop as close to the nearside kerb as possible. Turn off the engine but leave the key in the ignition so the vehicle can be moved,

then evacuate the vehicle, making sure everyone is in a safe place - well away from the car and on the pedestrian walkway if there is one. Put on a reflective jacket if you have one, and walk carefully to the nearest emergency phone to inform the operator. In the event of a fire in a tunnel you need to proceed with caution and you should only try and extinguish the fire is if someone is in danger. In all other cases leave as quickly as you can - do not wait to be told what to do. Don’t wait to act - fire and smoke can be fatal. Leave the vehicle and walk to a safe place. Pretty soon thousands of us will be boarding ferries and heading off to Europe for a well earned spring break and for many that will involve driving in some of the more mountainous parts of the continent where we frequently encounter long tunnels. The Institute of Advanced Motoring recently asked its Chief Examiner Peter Rodger to study the problems caused by tunnel driving and here’s what he had to say. “Though you may see a tunnel as just another stretch of road, there are specific precautions that you must be aware of and implement when using one. Tunnels can present serious problems for drivers. For example, vehicle fires in Europe’s Mont Blanc and Gotthard tunnels have claimed 50 lives between them. Many died because they wrongly believed they should wait in their vehicles for help, rather than getting out of the tunnel as soon as possible. Regardless of the length of the tunnel, an accident in one will present unique problems and knowing what to do is essential. Before entering a tunnel you should always check your fuel gauge in plenty of time, don’t risk running out in a tunnel. Turn on the traffic information station. Some larger European road tunnels have their own radio as well as electronic signs. And remember

The Rising Cost Of DIY Car Repairs

March is the single busiest month of the year for MOT testing, with almost 2.7 million vehicles due to be examined by garages - of which over 1 million are expected to fail. Figures from the leading independent garage network, which carries out 400,000 MOTs a year, reveal that an average spend of just over £72 per vehicle is now needed to rectify vehicle faults before they receive their annual roadworthiness certificate. The cost of motoring means that hard-pressed owners need to seize every opportunity to reduce their bills which often means getting the spanners out and doing a little DIY. And that’s okay for relatively small jobs but sometimes its a false economy or even downright dangerous to do repairs at home. The MOT failure rate is rising annually but a significant number of those failures could be avoided by taking your car to a skilled mechanic and getting them to do a thorough pre MOT. Faulty headlights, tail lights and indicators are the biggest causes of failure according to the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency – with inadequate brakes, worn or damaged tyres and obscured vision caused by chipped or cracked windscreens and

Above - Under the bonnet. Taking it to pieces is fine, it’s putting it back together that counts!

mirrors also featuring prominently. But horror stories abound about cars taken for MOT without brake pads, (because the owner couldn’t fit them after removing the old ones), dodgy rewires, engines held together with cable ties and wiper blades replaced with kitchen sponges. So take our advice and unless your an expert stick to the simple jobs around your car and let an expert take care of the rest - you know it makes sense!
