All Aboard The History Bus Departing 1340, arriving 1940, stopping at various centuries in between If you’ve got an interest in local or family history then you’ll find a warm welcome and lots of like minded people at the Friends of Cleethorpes Heritage Group. Founded in 2010 the group is dedicated to researching and celebrating the people and places that made our area great, and with the help of lottery funding they have been able to organise an exciting programme of events, including visits from TV genealogist Dr Nick Barratt, (from the BBC’s Who Do You Think You Are?), a World War One day and Roaring Twenties Tea Party at the Memorial Hall and a mediaeval re-enactment day with Lord Burgh’s Retinue. Their next big event is a bus trip through history, taking place on Saturday 17th August. The trip will head for South Lincolnshire, calling first at the village of Irnham to see the church and for a talk on the Luttrell Psalter by Sir Simon Benton Jones. The Psalter, one of the great masterpieces of English mediaeval art, was probably made for Sir Geoffrey Luttrell of Irnham around 1335-1340. It is famous for its illuminated text but also for the marginal images of mediaeval life which are among the most important sources of information about daily life in the period. The bus will then continue to Ayscoughfee Hall, near Spalding, to visit the house and gardens, the museum and to enjoy their 1940’s event.

Ayscoughfee Hall was built in the 1450’s for the wealthy wool merchant Ailwyn family and is one of the best preserved 15th Century houses in the country. It’s museum holds many interesting artefacts from the period and the grounds are well worth a visit in their own right, and feature a war memorial by Sir Edwin Lutyens. Tickets for the trip are priced at an extremely reasonable £10 including a buffet lunch. To find out more about the group visit their web page and join one of the area’s fastest growing and most interesting societies.

Skipton Camerata At The Minster Poetry inspired programme includes works by Dvorak, Elgar and Saint-Saens

On August 10th the Grimsby Minster plays host to a very special concert. As part of the BBC supported Side by Side project, Skipton Building Society Camerata and Grimsby Symphony Orchestra will be presenting a dramatic program of music from Dvorak, Elgar and Saint-Saens. Formed in 2004 and based in Skipton Girls High School the camerata have acquired a fine reputation as one of the leading professional chamber orchestras in the country.

Among the highlights of the programme is Dvorak’s symphonic poem Op107 The Water Goblin, inspired by a dark Germanic legend in which a fair maiden is obliged to marry the title character, with tragic consequences. Continuing the poetic theme the concert will also include Elgar’s Sea Pictures featuring Hannah Mason, (currently soprano with English National Opera), settings of five maritime poems by authors including Elizabeth Barrett Browning. The finale,

Charlotte said: “We always want these events to be free to attend. However, with all the cuts that are taking place in every sector, nothing is certain funding-wise, so we may need the public to donate small amounts that could ultimately mean we can make it happen every year. We’re so excited about this year’s programme and are delighted to be hosting it again in People’s Park. We hope everybody will have a fabulous time.”

DIY Roofing A Ridge Too Far?

Times are hard and we’re feeling the pinch. It means we all have to go without some luxuries and get by with a bit of make do and mend. But it is possible to go too far. Some things are best left to the experts and one of those things may well be roofing. If that seems a bit harsh let’s look at the facts. A roof is a dangerous place. It’s high, usually sloping, and has no fence or rail around it. Any time you go up on a roof, you are in a dangerous situation. You may also be outside the protection of your home and personal injury insurance. A recent survey suggests however, that more and more people are ignoring the risks and taking on roofing work themselves. The survey also revealed that the younger you are the more likely you are to take the increased risk. More than double the number of 18-24 year olds (59%) would be prepared to scale the rooftops compared to the over 55s (24%) - and half (49%) would tackle a circuit board or boiler compared to just 30% of the older age group. Men are also more significantly likely to try their hand at a spot of ‘extreme DIY’, with 50% of men compared 38% of women tackling roofing themselves and 40% doing their own electrics, plumbing or building work. So if you do feel inclined to get the ladders out and give it a go please take care - and if you decide to let caution be the better part of valour then you may care to give our goods friends on this page a call - they come highly recommended!

Over 500 people across the area have already taken part and have found that just 10 minutes on a bike is all it takes to put a big smile on your face. The Challenge is a competition between organisations to see who can encourage the highest percentage of their staff to cycle – see www. lovetoride.net/nelincs for more details. It’s all part of the £4.3M NE Lincs Local Sustainable Transport Fund Project which is also paying for the Bus Station development and the Cycle Hub at Grimsby Station which is due to open later in the summer. It will provide cycle hire, secure bike storage, shower and changing facilities, bike servicing and maintenance, plus cycling information. Good Food

Tastes Of Summer It’s time to fire up the barby and get some steaks sizzling - with all the trimmings of course. Here we offer some suggestions for new twists on some old favourites to make the garden party go with a swing - including fabulous tuna burger and summer pudding - both from our good friends at Waitrose!

Tuna Burger with Avocado Salad serves 4 preparation time - 15 mins + 15 mins chilling cooking time - 10 mins Ingredients: 300g tuna steak 100g soft white breadcrumbs zest and juice of 1 small lemon 2 tsp Dijon mustard 1 medium egg, beaten 2 tbsp olive oil 50g rocket 300g tomatoes, quartered 2 baby avocados, skinned, stoned and sliced

1 red onion, thinly sliced handful coriander leaves Method: Place the tuna in a food processor and pulse until finely minced. Transfer to a large bowl and mix in the breadcrumbs, lemon zest, mustard and egg. Shape into 4 even sized burgers and chill for 15 minutes. Cook the burgers in a large, nonstick frying pan for 4–5 minutes on each side until golden brown and cooked through. Meanwhile, mix together the lemon

juice and olive oil to make a dressing for the salad. Arrange the rocket, tomatoes, avocado and red onion on a platter. Drizzle with the lemon dressing and scatter over the coriander. Serve with the burgers.

Berry & Mascarpone Summer Pudding Serves 8 preparation time - 20 mins + overnight chilling Ingredients: 175g golden caster sugar 1 star anise or cinnamon stick

1kg mixed summer berries, eg raspberries, blackberries, redcurrants 9 slices soft white medium sliced bread with crusts removed 150g mascarpone

Good Food

Method: Place the sugar, spice and 4 tbsp water in a large pan. Heat gently, stirring to dissolve the sugar, then add the berries and cook for a couple of minutes until they begin to soften and release their juices. Remove from the heat and leave to cool. Strain the berries to separate the fruit from the juice. Line a 1.5 litre pudding basin with clingfilm. Cut 8 of the slices in half lengthways, angling the knife slightly so each piece has a wide end and a narrower end. Dip the slices of bread in the juice then use to line the basin, overlapping the pieces so there are no gaps. Place a third of the berries into the bottom of the basin then spoon the mascarpone into the centre and cover with the remaining fruit. Fold over any overhanging edges of bread. Cut the last piece of bread into a round and place on top, then drizzle with a little of the reserved juice (save any remainder for serving

with the pudding). 5 Cover the pudding with clingfilm and sit a small plate on top. Stand some cans on the plate and chill overnight. Remove the clingfilm, turn out the pudding and slice. Serve with a drizzle of reserved juice. Nutritional information: 299kcals/5.5g protein/47.7g carbohydrate/31.4g sugars/9.6g fat/6.3g saturated fat/4g fibre/0.5g salt per serving Recipes and photography copyright to Waitrose. Dahlias The old favourites making a welcome return

It’s not so long ago Dahlias were about the most unfashionable plant in the summer garden but now they’re being rediscovered by a new generation of gardeners and appreciated for the long lasting colour they bring to the summer border. Dahlia tubers first arrived in Europe at the end of the 18th century and were regarded as vegetables rather than a garden flowers until the first flowering cultivars were bred in Belgium in Victorian times. Today it is flowered cultivars which capture the gardening public’s imagination, ranging from the dwarf bedding types to the giant cactus flowered

heads which can be seen in late summer and early autumn. Some flower heads can be as small as 25mm and others can be the size of dinner plates. Dahlias flower from July through to the first hard frosts of the autumn and have a variety of uses. They can be used as both bedding plants and borders plants or they can be added to a mixed border alongside herbaceous perennials like Phlox, Monarda, Aster and Sedum. If you have the space to dedicate to a border of just dahlia, then they can be displayed in their full glory. They like well drained soil with plenty of sunlight and staking will be beneficial for the taller growing types. A good mulch will help them thrive and keep a look out for slugs and snails.

in BUSINESS turning the spotlight on local enterprise DSB Damp Proofing is one of the area’s leading property maintenance operations - the initials stand for Dave Stiles and Steve Burrows (they share the ‘S’) – and it was founded in 2008 when their former employer suddenly folded his business. That could have been devastating but for Dave and Steve it was an opportunity and they grabbed it with both hands. ‘It’s no good dwelling on the bad stuff’, says Dave. ‘We’d had an idea that things were looking gloomy so we’d put a few feelers out – and fortunately we both had good reputations in the trade. We got our cards on the Friday and started business on the Monday and we’ve never looked back.’ So what’s the key to their success? Well first of all it’s that they don’t ever seem to stop smiling – they’re the happiest damp course specialists in town. ‘Most of our work is residential and people don’t want miserable blokes working in their house,’ says Dave. ‘They want someone they can chat to, bounce ideas off, ask for advice on their plans and most importantly they want someone they can trust. We spend a lot of time working in people’s homes while they’re out at work – that’s a lot of faith their placing in us and we try to build a rapport right from the word go so that they know we’re worthy of that faith. It sounds old hat but service with a smile is at the heart of what we do. We depend on word of mouth and first impressions count for a lot when your running a business.’ ‘We also try to offer a complete service - we do damp proofing, plastering, insurance work, general building and timber treatments ourselves plus we have lots of contacts with first rate plumbers and electricians and other trades so we’re in a position to organise whole house renovations if need be. And these other trades are all people who we

trust implicitly - because if we recommend them then that’s our reputation on the line - and that’s something we take very seriously.’ So does it help that they were friends before they became business partners? ‘Definitely. If you’re going to be working with someone for twelve or more hours a day, five or six days a week then it had better be someone who you get on with. I don’t think we could stand this job if we weren’t mates outside work as well.’ It’s a strategy that seems to work well - they’re in plenty of demand but if you’re looking for a great job done by nice people give Dave and Steve a call you’ll be glad you did!

motoring Do you get maximum value from your travel arrangements? As Summer approaches it’s interesting to ask what are the cheapest and most time efficient ways of getting away for your summer break? The results can be surprising. When travelling on the continent the family car may be the best option. To get to the Vendee by car on a ferry from Dover to Calais and driving on toll free roads, takes 9 hours and costs £270 including petrol and ferry ticket. By comparison, budget airlines offer flights to Nantes for £461 for a family of four, taking over 5 hours including customs and baggage. Driving also beats the train on cost, with tickets for a family of four at circa £300 and travel time approximately 8 hours. Heading for Spain sees costs and travel times escalate. Flights for four to Malaga come in at £855 and travel time is 6 hours. Driving is £100 cheaper but the journey time is 22 hours. If you went by train, costs would exceed £1000 and you would be travelling for 23 hours.

Even in the UK costs for travel can vary significantly. Four flights to Edinburgh from London cost £300 compared to £182 to drive the 400 miles by car. Journey times also vary however - it takes a full day to drive to Edinburgh whilst total travel time by plane is approximately 3.5 hours. Train travel can also be a consideration and this is the most economical means of travel to Edinburgh at just £150 and taking 4.5 hours. So wherever you’re going make sure to get great value and have a fantastic holiday, you can send us a postcard if you like.

Justin Bieber drives a leopard print Audi R8. John Lennon used to own a psychedelic yellow and blue Rolls Royce Phantom. And Paris Hilton has a shocking pink Bentley Continental GT. And one day they could be yours! It’s the newest craze in collectibles - vehicles that used to belong to the rich and famous. The market leaders are Coy’s Auctions and a look at their recent catalogues gives a good idea of what’s available. Starting with Sir Elton John’s red Ferrari and estimated at £100,000 (top right) or the Audi Cabriolet that Princess Diana used to take the young princes to Alton Towers (bottom right) - yours for around £25,000. It’s not just high performance cars that are collectible either. Pictured bottom left in the farmyard where it was found is Brian Epstein’s mini - probably the only Beatles related car still in it’s original condition - around £25,000 if you’re interested.
