Unlock your child’s potential with ...... We all know the importance of maths and English. Young people with better literacy and numeracy skills are far more likely to succeed in gaining good employment and fulfilling their potential later in life. At your local study centre, Kumon offers individualised maths and English study programmes for all ages and abilities. Established for over 50 years, Kumon’s unique worksheet based method can help your child to excel academically, develop their capacity for learning independently and boost their all round confidence. As well as building speed and accuracy, Kumon’s maths and English programmes develop life long transferable skills such as concentration and independent learning, time management and problem solving: abilities which will prepare students for the future. Not only are maths and English key to academic success, but the study skills and learning ability they gain through the Kumon programme will stand them in good stead for adult life, as well as for the pressures of homework, coursework and timed exams. By working at their own pace over a period of time children acquire the self assurance to reach their potential both at school and elsewhere. Before enrolling, your child will benefit from a Free
KUMON Assessment. This will determine where on the programmes they will begin and will ensure that your child’s Kumon study is individualised to their needs from the outset. Once enrolled, your child will start on the programmes at a level they are comfortable with. This ensures that they establish a daily study habit and that there are no gaps in their understanding of the subject before moving on. Students attend their local Kumon centre weekly and have daily worksheets to complete at home. There are currently more than 68,000 students studying with Kumon at over 670 study centres across the UK. Clean & Tidy The popularity of TV programmes about hoarders has led the insurance industry to start looking at how clean and tidy people keep their homes - so it could be a case of ....
Clean up or the insurance gets it! We all like to think that once we go home and shut the front door behind us everything that we do thereafter is private but in fact the way we clean and tidy our houses can have knock on effects not just on our health but also on our bank balances! Up to now insurance companies haven’t usually poked around inside your home when you apply for a home insurance policy but that could be changing, as insurers, encouraged by recent programmes about hoarding, increasingly cite untidiness risks that cause people to trip over and injure themselves or start home fires from flammable materials lying around the house as a reason for not paying out on a policy. So what exactly is hoarding, and how can it negatively impact your homeowner insurance?

Clean & Tidy Compulsive hoarding and cluttering refers to the acquisition of and failure to discard a large number of possessions, which appear to be useless or of limited value, in an attempt to decrease stress and anxiety. It’s a serious problem and can lead to eviction and homelessness. And just what are the risks that hoarding can cause? Well, a cluttered house can limit mobility and cause falls and can be especially hazardous to the elderly and disabled. Clutter can block doorways and windows, making leaving a home very difficult. Boxes, paper, clothing and other items are extremely flammable and will add fuel to a fire. Clutter can also lead to inadequate cleaning. Rotting food items can attract bugs and rodents, leading to health hazards. Reduced cleaning can also worsen existing allergies and breathing problems. It isn’t just an issue for home owners either. The same basic principles of tidiness and cleanliness apply to business premises - only even more so because it’s not just the insurance companies who may take an interest - it’s the health and safety people as well. Trip and slip hazards, crowded gangways and unhygienic conditions are all high on the list of danger factors that contribute to industrial accidents, so business people too need to pay attention to keeping their premises clean and tidy. In theory you could lose out on your claim or be refused cover but most likely you’ll get a notice from
13
the insurance company demanding that you clean up your home and remove potential hazards. But why wait for that to happen? If you have a home or business that’s full of potentially hazardous clutter, clean it up. If it’s reached the point where it’s all a bit too much for you then consider giving either Stephen’s Cleaners or Freshney Cleaners (see the adverts below) a call and see if they can help. Pretty soon you can have everything shipshape again, which is good for your health and you just might be saving money on your insurance policy in the process.

Looking for great early colour? Then get planting now so as not to miss out on ......
Glorious Spring Flowering Bulbs Spring flowering bulbs like daffodils, tulips and crocuses are so much a part of our gardens that sometimes we take them for granted and fail to appreciate how spectacular are. Autumn is planting time so here are our tips for getting the best out of your spring flowering bulbs. Before planting, loosen the soil thoroughly. You might also want to work some compost into it. Then dig a hole and arrange the bulbs in an upright position. Plant from September till December, but try to plant them before freezing weather sets in. The rule of thumb for planting depth is to plant twice as deep as the bulb is tall. For large bulbs such as narcissus, tulips and hyacinths, this will be about ten to twenty centimetres deep. For snowdrops and crocuses, it’s about five to ten centimetres. Plant large bulbs an average of twelve centimetres apart and small bulbs an average of five to seven centimetres apart.
Geoff’s Gardening Service 01469 569712 H 0790 4006635 geoff.oneill.gardening@googlemail.com
Bulbs don’t like soggy conditions. If you have clay soil you can mix in some sand or compost or sprinkle some small pebbles into the planting holes before putting the bulbs in. If using pots, put some broken sherds at the bottom for drainage. Water the bulbs immediately after planting to encourage them to produce roots. This will help them tolerate cold and frost. You can plant flower bulbs in layers (also known as the sandwich or lasagne system) in your garden as well as in pots and containers. Bulbs that flower latest in the season (such as tulips) are planted in the lowest layer. Bulbs that flower earlier - such as crocuses or grape hyacinths - are planted above. Planting in layers will have no adverse effects on the bulbs. They will simply flower one after another in the same spot. So the same flower bed or pot or container will provide flowers for many weeks and there will always be colour your garden.

Is Your Home Ready For Winter ?
Summer’s gone and winter’s tuning up and we all know that it’s a time of year when all the jobs around the house that you never got time to do come back to bite you. So here’s our checklist of the most important things to do to avoid the wintertime blues. Starting with exterior tasks you should clean your gutters and downspouts and make sure they are not blocked by leaves and debris. Use a screwdriver
to probe the wood trim around windows and doors to check for rot. Replace where necessary. With low humidity and cool temperatures this is a good time to paint the exterior of your home. Inspect your roof, or get a professional to examine it for wear and tear. Also check the flashing around skylights, pipes and chimneys. If you have any leaks or gaps, heavy snow and ice will find its way in.
Wrap water pipes that run along exterior walls with heating tape. It will save energy and prevent them from freezing. Contact a qualified contractor to inspect and service your gas heater to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning. If you use a hot water system for heating, drain the tank, check the pressure and bleed your radiators.

End Of Life Planning
Mobility Nobody wants to spend too long thinking about death, especially not their own, but it’s something to which we all should give some attention whatever our age. In the UK only 40 % of people make a will which means most people are failing to put in place the protection their family needs and deserves in the event of your death. Dying intestate, that’s without a will, can cause many problems, especially for unmarried partners as it leaves it to the government to decide who benefits from the estate. Ascension Wills can help you put this protection in place. They offer free consultations, without obligation Monday to Saturday from 9am to 9pm. A consultation takes about an hour and looks at all the many things you need to consider when planning for the end of your life. Are you worried about the community care charges? Or afraid what will happen to you if you should lose mental capacity? Do you have concerns about how you are treated and cared for during your last days? Will based trusts, lasting powers of attorney and advance decisions (or living wills as they are better known) can allay these concerns, giving you much needed peace of mind. Nowadays many people want to plan their own funerals and with costs rising a pre-paid funeral plan is often the best option. It gives you control over the future but at today’s prices. And if you’re worried about what will happen to your estate Ascension Wills offer professional probate services. We’re members of the Society of Will Writers and Estate Planning Practitioners, so we’re regularly vetted and we carry Professional Indemnity Insurance of £2.5million. No payments are ever asked for up front, only when you are fully satisfied, so if you’re thinking about putting arrangements in place to secure the future for your loved ones then give Ascension Wills a call for free no obligation advice.

Be wary of cold callers selling security alarms Homeowners have been told to be on their guard by local Trading Standards Officers after they received a number of complaints about a security alarm company operating in the area. One complaint came from a homeowner who was sold an alarm system for £99 after a cold call from a telephone salesperson. The call was made on a Monday, the consumer was visited in person the next day and the alarm was fitted on Wednesday, not really giving the consumer time to think about it. It was only at the time of the installation visit that the consumer was told there was a charge of £29.15 per month for the next five years for the alarm to be monitored.
Several complaints were made to Trading Standards about the same company last year after it offered alarms for free to mostly older people but then charged a hefty installation fee. Neil Clark, Community Protection Manager responsible for Trading Standards at North East Lincolnshire Council, said:
“Our advice is that if an offer sounds too good to be true, then there’s probably a catch. In this case the catch was a service charge of £1,749 across five years for an alarm system that was sold for £99.” Cllr Hazel Chase, portfolio holder for Safer and Stronger Communities at North East Lincolnshire Council, said: “This is yet another scam that the public should be wary of. It is so very easy to be duped by cold callers so I stress again to the Public feel free to say ‘no’ at the earliest opportunity and avoid being ripped off. It’s the safest option and much easier than agreeing to a visit from a highly skilled salesperson giving you the hard sell.” If you’ve been ripped off by a rogue trader or want advice on consumer protection, contact Trading Standards through the Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 08454 040506 or at www.adviceguide.org.uk.

Hallowe’en Recipes
Parmesan cheese to serve 4 tbsp chopped coriander to garnish Method Heat oil in a large non-stick pan and cook vegetables, ginger and garlic for 10 minutes or until they start to soften, stirring frequently. Add rice and cook for 1 minute, stirring. Add hot stock, stir well and cook gently until all liquid has evaporated (this should take 2025 minutes) and rice is tender. Stir frequently to make sure the rice doesn’t stick. If the rice cooks too quickly, just add a little more stock. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Spoon into warm bowls and serve scattered with grated Parmesan and coriander.
Don’t Forget The Firework And Bonfire Codes! One thing we can be sure of is that the Fifth of November is going to be a busy night for the emergency services. But we can all stay a bit safer and make their task a lot easier by being sensible and following The Firework and Bonfire Codes. Only buy fireworks marked with the British Standard Kitemark BS7114. Don’t drink alcohol if setting off fireworks. Keep fireworks in a closed box and always follow the instructions carefully. Light at arms length using a taper and stand well back.
Bonfire Night
25
Never go back to a firework once it is lit. Even if it hasn’t gone off, it could still explode. Never throw fireworks and never put them in your pocket. Respect your neighbours – don’t let off fireworks late at night and remember there are laws to follow. Never give sparklers to children under five. Even when they have gone out they are still hot so put them in a bucket of water after use. Keep your pets indoors throughout the evening. Build your bonfire well clear of buildings, garden sheds, fences and hedges. Never use flammable liquids to start a bonfire and never burn dangerous items such as aerosol cans, paint tins, foam furniture or batteries. Don’t leave bonfires unattended. An adult should supervise it until it has burnt out. If it has to be left, damp it down with plenty of water. Always keep a bucket of water or a hosepipe nearby in case of fire. And of course enjoy those hotdogs and have a great night!

Signs Of A Return To Life For The Used Car Market As Sales Rise It’s taken a while but it looks as though the UK used car market is finally waking up after all the financial chaos of the past few years. According to the most recent figures used car sales will hit over 7 million units in 2013, outpacing new car sales and climbing 6.4% to return to pre-recession levels. After 2008 new car sales fell dramatically which had a knock on effect on the used car market with far less stock becoming available but now new car sales are booming and the used car market is seeing the benefits. The long term impact of the fall in new car sales
during and immediately following the recession is still having an effect with the average age of vehicles on UK roads reaching a 30 year high at 7.59 years. There has also been an increase in the number of no car families. However increasing numbers of older cars on the roads isn’t necessarily bad news. It’s testimony to how much build quality has improved in the past decade that three quarters of cars now make their twelfth birthday and more than half are reaching the 14 year mark! It certainly looks as though consumer confidence is picking up as lower inflation, a slow down in fuel price rises, improving employment prospects and a more stable economy seem to be helping to restore car buyers’ confidence. So if you’re thinking about changing cars think about a good used car from a quality dealer - it’s makes good sense!

Car Owners Rally To Prove Pink Isn’t Just A Colour - It’s An Attitude! It was Miley Cyrus who said “Pink isn’t just a colour it’s an attitude too” and that fact was certainly evident at the recent annual Pink Car Rally. The pink participants radiated positivity as they preened both themselves and their cars in preparation for the start of the rally. Their positivity paid off, as for the first time in six years, not only did the sun shine at the start of the rally, but it stayed out for the whole of the ‘2 Days - 2 Destinations’ fund raising event, despite the wet and windy weather predictions.
“It was the most incredible rally”, explained organiser Sali Gray, still dazed by the success of it all. “Previous rallies have seen the Pinkies soaking wet and chilled to the bone, but this year some of us even had our tops down.” It wasn’t just the weather that was warm; the welcome the rally received at both Kings Mill Hospital in Nottinghamshire on day one and Peterborough City Hospital on day two, was positively scorching. “We were greeted by staff, patients and supporters at both of the destination hospitals, which was really touching” enthused Sali, “particularly as some of the children waiting to see the pink cars had undergone chemotherapy themselves. It really was an emotional moment.” The annual Pink Car Rally raises funds for the Little Princess Trust charity, which gives ‘real-hair-wigs to children who lose their own hair, primarily through cancer treatments. The participants are collectively known as the Pinkies and together they had raised over £40,000 for the charity, prior to this year’s rally.

One Of The World’s Largest Collections Of Classic Cars To Go On Sale
Don’t Get Caught Out Would You Spot One Of The Top Five Used Car Scams? We all like to think we’re too smart to get scammed but if nobody was getting caught out then there’d be no profit for the scammers. Of course we’d all be a lot safer if we went to reputable dealers like The Motor Place in Railway Street, Grimsby (you have extra rights when you deal with the trade) but MyCarCheck.com have produced a list of the five most common types of used car scam so we can try to say safe. Escrow fraud is the number one tactic for criminals targetting online buyers. Typically nowadays it will involve the sale of a car on eBay and when you buy the seller will suggest that you deposit the money with a 3rd party for safe keeping until the car is delivered. Of course you never see your money or the car again. Cloners attempt to disguise a stolen car’s identity by passing it off as another similar vehicle. Techniques vary in terms of sophistication, from ‘basic cloning’, like changing the number plates, to ‘deep cloning’, which involves tampering with all kinds of identifying features. Ringing on the other hand involves criminals buying a written off car from a scrap yard, doing a very

If you’re in the market for a nice little runaround it may interest you to know that the collection of 200 cars and owned by former Austrian Grand Prix driver Karl Ritter, who was a contemporary of Graham Hill and Jochen Rindt in the 1960s, is up for sale by auction in Graz in Austria. quick and potentially dangerous repair job, and selling it on to an unsuspecting buyer. Misrepresentation is interesting because, in the private market at least, it is not technically a crime. The term covers everything from badly informed sellers not knowing what they bought in the first place, to a whole host of professional scams. Clocking - winding back the mileage - remains a huge problem. If you buy from a dealer you have rights under the Consumer Protection From Unfair Trading Regulations 2008. If you buy privately and the car turns out to be not ‘as described’ then getting redress can be difficult. Finally watch out for neutral location meetings. A phrase like ‘We’ll meet in that car park’ should set alarm bells ringing. If you’re buying privately make sure you go to the vendor’s home.

Literature Festival 2013 The Grimsby Literature Festival 2013
The Great Grimsby Literature Festival 2013 will be running throughout the month of October at venues across Grimsby and Cleethorpes with events and activities to appeal to the widest possible range of ages and tastes. The festival places regional writers at the heart of the programme, offering the opportunity for the
public to discover and enjoy their work. There’ll also be visits from some of Britain’s best loved literary figures. Highlights include local
poet and musician Simon Naylor reading from his collection Landscapes Of Life, words and songs inspired by the Lincolnshire landscape. Simon has produced two volumes of poetry - both about his love of wildlife, and a series of children’s books, Earthwood, that portray the beauty and wonder of the natural world. His most recent work, a solo album entitled Wide Lincolnshire Skies is due for release on CD later this year. The reading takes place on Sunday 20 October from 1pm to 2pm in the People’s Park Cafe and admission is free. On Wednesday 23rd October poet, comic, singer, song-writer and glasses wearer John Hegley will be appearing at Petit Venue to performs and read from his new book - a greatest hits, best of golden oldies compilation with some new stuff thrown in. ‘Comedy’s poet laureate’ has captivated audiences all over the country, in theatres and festivals and with numerous television appearances. This new compilation shows the breadth of his appeal, with
seriously funny, cleverly comic poems on everything from love, family, France, art and the sea to dogs, dads, gods, taxidermy, carrots, spectacles and – of course – potatoes. Tickets are £8 - advance booking only. Call Cleethorpes Tourist Information Centre on 01472 323111 or book on line at www.theculturehouse. co.uk.
There’s so much going on, far too much to even try to mention it all, so visit the Culture House website for more details and we’ll just mention that on Friday 25 October at 7.30pm Kiki Lovechild will be presenting a fabulous evening of mime and comedy entitled The Weatherman at the Oasis Academy. Kiki’s celebrated solo show asks how would you pass time in purgatory and features a silent clown trying to amuse himself in a tedious eternity.
The People’s Puzzle Streets of Grimsby & Cleethorpes Hidden in the grid are the names of thirty local streets. By which we mean that they are called street as part of their name, not avenues or roads - just streets. Some are in Grimsby, some in Cleethorpes. If you get stuck we’ll put the complete list on our Facebook page and we’ll post the solution there as well but not for a while yet.
