Navi’s performance is an experience you’ll never forget and he’ll be bringing his show ‘The Legend Continues’ to The Central Hall on Saturday 25th October. Imagine a storm in the night long ago ... so begins the new work from Grimsby folk rock band Merlin’s Keep; a folk opera telling the tale of Havelok and Grim and the story of how Great Grimsby got its name. As part of the 2014 Museums at Night project the band will perform the work in its entirety in Grimsby Minster on the evening of Thursday 15th May. Havelok the Dane is a new take on an old tale and the band hopes this heroic epic will come to life for a new generation and remind the town of its noble past.

re you interested in local history or the theatre? Would you like to be involved in a project that promises to unite the two and deliver something really special that the whole town can take a pride in? Well now you have the chance because Fusion Youth Theatre are recruiting volunteers who would like to be involved in their new project. Stories, Sites & Spectacles is a BBC funded project, a partnership between Fusion Youth Theatre & Community Arts, The Grimsby Minster, The CultureHouse and Museums At Night, for local people to help work on, create, produce and perform a large piece of community theatre in and around the Grimsby Minster. The project is linked to the nationwide Museums At Night event which takes place in mid May. The performance will be based on the past, present and future of the town and the surrounding area. Any residents of North East Lincolnshire are welcome to come and be a part of the project. Volunteers are needed to work as researchers, writers, directors, organisers,

You might think that after their fantastic success in 2013, including taking four trophies at the Skegness Regional Youth Theatre Awards the good people at Fusion Youth Theatre would be content to rest on their laurels, but not a bit of it. They’ve got a major new project under way with funding from the BBC - and they’re after your help!

performers, storytellers, musicians, artists, costume makers, stage crew and much more! There is a role for everyone and no previous experience is necessary. The performance will be lead by professional directors Louise Clark (Libellule Theatre) and Emma Middleton (Mizuchi Theatre), each of whom have created many

youth and community theatre performances over the years both nationally and internationally. But Louise and Emma are only the drivers of the project. The content, the story, the direction that the project

takes, is completely down to the participants because Stories, Sites & Spectacles needs to be community theatre created and told by the community it represents. The performance will be made up of two parts - one will be an outdoor spectacle performance and the second will be smaller indoor pieces which may include songs or storytelling. The project began in mid February but the group are still welcoming new arrivals and this means not just individuals but also local groups, businesses and organisations who are interested in being represented. If you’d like to know more about getting involved, contact the team on grimsbystory@gmail.com or telephone 07884 308992. You can also find them on ww.facebook.com/ GrimsbyStory or www.twitter. com/GrimsbyStory.

Fusion Youth Theatre meet at St James House (next to Grimsby Minster) on Saturday mornings (for 4 to 11 year olds) and on Wednesday evenings (for children of 11 years and over). For more information visit their website at www.fusionyouththeatre.co.uk

At present they are recruiting young people in years 7-11 in Immingham to join their “The Apprentice” scheme during Easter Half Term. It’s a week long programme involving sports, cooking and acting with the added bonus of a free climbing trip to Rock City in Hull for those who attend the whole course and it should be a great experience. See the panel below for more details.

Also on the way is the World Records Day which will take place at King George V Stadium on Saturday 12th April. It’s free to enter APR and there’ll be live music from Franklin College students, sports activities and races, a pop up skate park and rock climbing wall, a blow up football pitch and of course the chance to set a new super bouncy world space hopper record! So that’s music, football, skate boarding, and space hoppers. What more could you ask?

British Cycling plan to transform Britain into a true cycling nation

Do you have what it takes to become a British Cycling Ride Leader? If you’re a keen cyclist and you think you could lead group rides around NE Lincolnshire then Skyride and British Cycling want to hear from you! They welcome all kinds of cyclists – as long as they have heaps of enthusiasm and are happy to support beginner bike riders and families. There’s no need to be a cycling expert or competitive racer, just be confident riding in a group and have a good level of fitness. They’re running a free assessed one day course to qualify you to deliver guided bike rides for groups of beginner and intermediate level adults and accompanied children on roads and cycle paths. The next Ride Leader training course in our area is on 12th April at Bradley Football Development Centre and after completing the course, Ride Leaders will receive free kit and British Cycling Ride membership. If you’re interested visit goskyride.com or email Skyride@ britishcycling.org.uk to find out more.

fter so much Olympic success and with two consecutive Tour De France winners hailing from these shores and the Tour itself on its way it comes as a surprise to find that Britain is still not regarded as a major mass participation cycling nation. British Cycling is setting out to change that however with a ten point plan which includes more investment in cycling infrastructure, better legal protection, the introduction of cycle awareness into the

Get out and about on this 7 mile route suggested by Woods Cycles

A nice easy ride that all the family can enjoy and which can easily be extended along connecting tracks if required. Start at Humberston Church and head down the A1031 towards Tetney for 1/3 mile before turning left into South Sea Lane. At the end of South Sea Lane turn right and lift your bike over the turnstile. Carry on along the gravel track with Thorpe Park Golf Course on your left, eventually you come to open country. After about a mile you come to some gates which can feed your bike through and continue on towards Tetney Lock where the road crosses the Louth Canal. If you wish you can turn left over the bridge and stop into the Crown and Anchor public

house for refreshments at this point or else carry straight on towards the tank farm on the road to Tetney. Watch out for traffic because this is a fast stretch of road. Just as you arrive at the tank farm there is a gravel track off to the right, follow this and head towards the wind turbines. This path will eventually reconnect with the path you followed earlier and you can head back past the golf course and on to Humberston. Ordnance Survey Explorer Map Sheet Number 283 would be helpful if you wish to explore the area further and there is plenty of wildlife to be seen including roe deer, muntjac and occasional sparrowhawks hunting above the hedgerows. Happy riding!

driving test and improved training for children. The plan, which can be downloaded from www.britishcycling.org.uk, is backed by research which shows that if people replaced just 5-10% of their driving with cycling there would be large decreases in heart disease, diabetes and strokes and hundreds of millions of pounds would be freed up in NHS budgets. With so many excellent schemes like Bike2Work available and the new cycle hub at Grimsby station making life easier for commuters there’s never been a better time to get on two wheels so put down those car keys and get pedalling!

Bringing The Story Of The Chums To Life Top row - Scenes from the forthcoming Grimsby Chums documentary Right - Brett King as Captain Charles Henry Bellamy Far Right - Director Rob Smith confers with the camera crew

THE CHUMS STORY 15

“In this centenary year it’s vital that we reacquaint young people with the heroism and sacrifice of the Grimsby Chums. This is a story that we must never forget.”

I

t’s not often we get to spend the day on a proper movie set so when we get an invitation to head up to Cabourne Parva to see the team from Focus 7 and the Grimsby Chums Heritage Project at work on their new film telling the story of The Grimsby Chums we don’t need asking twice. Funded by a Heritage Lottery grant and organised by Synergy Grimsby CIC the project has involved young people from Grimsby aged 11-25 researching and recording their heritage in a project called ‘Your Country Needs Youth.’ The project aims to educate young people today about the impact of the war on towns like Grimsby and to bring the story to new audiences using modern digital media. The film recreates scenes from the lives of five local lads who joined up to do their duty and to tell what befell them.

We have an exiting day. There’s a field hospital set up in the barn and a contingent of reenactment specialists in full uniform wandering around drinking tea. Later in the afternoon smoke bombs are deployed in a recreation of the Battle of The Somme. There’s also a real sense of community - many of the young researchers who have been involved in the project from the start were visiting the set to witness their hard work coming to fruition accompanied by project chief Claire Wollington. Of course there’s a huge amount that the film can’t cover but Rob Smith, Director and Producer says he hopes the film will tell young people “Enough to make them want to ask more questions.” The film will be shown at an exhibition on April 12th, 15th, 18th and 19th at Freeman Street Market’s Business and Digital Hub.

Lest We Forget - The Story Of The Grimsby Chums At the outbreak of the First World War the British Army was in urgent need of manpower and to encourage volunteers Lord Kitchener instituted a series of Pals’ Battalions. These were drawn from a particular locality which meant that men could sign up and serve alongside people they knew from their own home towns.

The Grimsby Chums was a pal’s battalion begun by former pupils of Wintringham School but entry was soon opened to everyone in the area. Men also came from Scunthorpe and Louth. Their official name was the 10th Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. They first saw action at the attack on the village of La Boisselle on July

1st 1916, part of the Battle of the Somme. By the end of the day they had suffered 502 casualties. Only two of the officers came back unwounded, and only about 100 men. A memorial commemorating the 810 members of the 10th Battalion who died during the war stands in Grimsby Minster.

Renaissance Streets U

ntil recently Brighowgate and Wellowgate were the Cinderella streets of the Top Town area - unloved and largely ignored by shoppers who seldom ventured beyond the Minster. It was a sad state of affairs for two of the most historic streets of old Grimsby. Wellowgate was originally the route between the town and Welholme Abbey and Brighowgate has been a main road into the old town centre for centuries, site of the Blewstone boundary marker and a key economic hub during the Victorian railway boom.

“It’s a nice street to do business in - the traders work together well and there’s a real buzz about the place, like it’s really taking off.” Both streets suffered as a result of the Top Town re-development but a stroll along them nowadays reveals signs of a revival in the fortunes of the area. Alongside long established businesses like George Petch and United Carpets it’s home to many new boutique style shops selling gifts, homewares, scented candles and jewellery. There’s also a photography studio, antiques and curios and a vintage clothing emporium and mixed in with these are high end kitchens and bathrooms, craft shops, restaurants and coffee shops and even Red Herring, a company marketing bespoke murder mystery events, both for dinner parties and larger events.

According to Rebecca Almond of Home Is Where The Heart Is there’s a great vibe about the area nowadays “It’s a nice place to do business in. We all collaborate to make it more appealing to shoppers, at Christmas for example, and we’re aware that we’re beginning to get a reputation for being the place to go when you’re looking for something special, something a little out of the ordinary that the big chains might not stock.” So next time you’re shopping in Top Town and you get tired of the same old same old why not pop down to Brighowgate and Wellowgate and see what you can find you may well be pleasantly surprised!

t’s coming up for 8 years ago now that Chung Yeung opened the Oriental Express buffet in the former Bird’s Nest Cafe by the boating lake. The new venture was an immediate hit, immensely popular with locals and holidaymakers alike, with its sleek modern interiors and wide range of delicious Chinese and Indian dishes. Of course a lot of us dabble with Chinese cuisine at home but somehow it never tastes the same so we asked Chung to let us in on the secret of how to cook great Chinese food. “That’s easy,” he said. “It’s fresh quality ingredients, care and attention to detail and the power of the wok. It needs to be so hot that when the ingredients hit the oil, the heat is sustained throughout the whole cooking process. In our kitchen we use fan assisted turbo gas woks for that special wok aroma.” So there you go and in the absence of a turbo wok in our home kitchen we think that in future we’ll leave it to the experts and head down to Oriental Express for our stir fry. We’ll see you there.

There have been Turners in the local butchery trade for four generations - it was in the early 1900s that J.H. Turner, the founder of the dynasty, opened his first shop on the corner of Welholme Road and Farebrother Street. The business in its present form was established by John Turner in the 1960s as a pork butchers and it was he who, faced with increasing competition from supermarket chains, had the idea of diversifying the business and who adopted the slogan ‘Butcher, Baker, Sandwich Maker’ (there being relatively little demand at the time for Candlesticks). What really sets Turners apart however is of

course their legendary Lincolnshire sausages, made to J.H. Turner’s original recipe with first class Lincolnshire belly pork, fresh sage and just the right amount of seasoning. The exact recipe of course is a closely guarded secret and we don’t really have it but we do know that demand for these delicacies is rising so fast they are now made every day and they still sell out by mid afternoon so if you want some you’d best get there early! Or alternatively you could take yourself down to our good friends Oriental Express for whom the Turner’s sausage is a fixture on the menu and consistently one of their best selling dishes.

Smoked Haddock, Banana & Black Pudding on French Toast Prep time: 5 minutes Cooking time: 4 minutes Serves 2 Ingredients 2 fillets of smoked haddock 1 banana (peeled) 2 slices of black pudding 2 slices of bread 2 eggs (whipped and seasoned) Milk (for poaching haddock) Method 1. Heat the milk in a pan, once boiling add the fish, cover and turn off the heat

Red Mullet with Stuffed Tomato Prep time: 8 minutes Cooking time: 10 - 12 minutes Serves 2 Ingredients 1 red mullet (filleted and each fillet cut in two or three depending on size) 2 beef tomatoes 1 tbsp tapenade bunch of spinach 1 shallot (diced) green beans mange tout peas baby corn Method 1. Cut the tomatoes in half, scoop out the inside and discard, season with salt, brush with oil and place in the oven at 180C for 25min or until cooked, alternatively grill until cooked. 2. Fry the pieces of red mullet on both sides in a little oil in a hot pan, skin side first.

2. Soak the bread in the whipped eggs 3. Heat some oil in a frying pan and add the egg soaked bread, cut the banana in half on the diagonal and fry in the same pan as the bread, turn the bread and cook until golden on both sides, cook the banana until golden and soft. 4. At the same time grill the sliced black pudding 5. Lay a slice of the cooked bread on a plate, top with a slice of the grilled black pudding, remove the poached smoked haddock from the milk, drain and lay on top of the black pudding, finish off with a piece of the banana. Alternatively you could use cod, coley, ling or hake. Fish is great at Easter but it can be hard to dream up new recipes so we asked our friends at Seafish for some suggestions and here’s what they came up with.

3. Sweat the shallot in a little oil or butter until translucent then add the spinach and allow to wilt. Season with salt and pepper. 4. When the tomatoes are cooked, spoon the wilted spinach into them, add the pieces of fish and top with some tapenade 5. We served our mullet with green beans, mange tout and baby corn, but try your own sides too. You could also make this dish with other fish - gurnard or red snapper would be perfect!

In our last issue we had a look at some simple rules that help to make learning your times tables easier. This time we have a look at another of those things we never understood even while it was busy making our childhoods a misery - the apostrophe!

Learning to forgive the world’s least favourite punctuation mark!

Y

ou’ve got to feel sorry for apostrophes. Everyone hates them, nobody loves them. I expect they feel misunderstood. But we can change all that and here we’ve boiled the whole of apostrophe lore down to six simple rules. Follow them and stay safe! 1. Always use the apostrophe with contractions - words where you’ve left some letters out like don’t and shan’t and he’s and there’s. 2. Use an apostrophe where a word ends in an s because someone owns something. There is no need to use an apostrophe every time a word ends in s - for example because it is a plural

3.

4.

5.

so it’s “Bob’s bikes”, “Carol’s cauliflowers”. The word it’s ONLY has an apostrophe when it’s short for it is. The possessive its never has an apostrophe so there is no apostrophe in a phrase like “the dog chased its own tail”. When more than one thing is the owner put the apostrophe after the final s - “the dogs’ kennel”, “the boys’ books”. Punctuation rules do change sometimes! It used to be common practice to put an apostrophe in numerical and alphabetical nouns such as the 1970s or LPs but nobody does it anymore.

6.

Modern design sometimes leaves the apostrophe out of signage and titles for greater symmetry and legibility for example The Peoples Publication!

Spring is here at last - time to tidy up and make room for some

Pansies

M

arch is the time for a garden spring clean after the winter, re-invigorating and livening up existing flower beds, borders and containers. This makes pansies and violas the ideal choice for planting in March. Pansies are the perfect spring plants - along with primulas, forget-me-nots and wallflowers - and are great for patio pots, hanging baskets and window boxes. They’re great for filling the gaps in borders once you have cleared away bedraggled or dead plants and they are some of the easiest instant colour plants for this time of year. One well known fan of pansies (and their close relatives the violas) is broadcaster and gardener, Esther Rantzen CBE, who has a particularly delicate purple variety named after her. “I love pansies for their soft colours, all the shades of blues, purples and golds” she says, “and for their faces, turned down, as if in contemplation. In Hamlet, Ophelia says, ‘There’s pansies, that’s for thoughts’ – and in fact

HOMES AND GARDENS 31 the name comes from the French, penser, meaning to think. They look fragile, but in fact they are tough, they can survive anything except the burning summer heat, and they seed themselves and return for free year after year.”

Get The Best From Your Pansies Plant in moist, humus rich, well drained soil. Pansies like sun and cooler temperatures. Space the plants about 7 to 12 inches apart and they will spread and grow to be about 6 to 9 inches tall. Remember to water them regularly. You can use a general, all purpose fertilizer around your pansies to help them grow. Dead head to prolong blooming and encourage more flowers to grow.

We all love to see our garden looking great but it’s hard work and that’s where Geoff’s can help. With Geoff’s there’s no fuss or gimmicks - just excellent gardening services. Whether it’s an occasional trim and tidy or a full clearance and make over Geoff’s can make your garden beautiful and they offer treework, hedge trimming, pruning and power washing too! So when you need a helping hand make GGS top of your list!

Take Care When Repairing Winter Roof Damage ....

T

he high winds seem to have died down for a while at least but there’s no denying that it’s been a tough few months and many of us will find that our homes are showing signs of the battering they’ve received. For most that will mean getting a professional roofer in to repair the damage but some of us will try and get up there and fix things ourselves. Ladder related injuries are among the commonest of causes of DIYers’ visits to A&E (41,000 of us visit hospital with injuries caused by ladders) so maybe it’s best to leave it to people who know what they’re doing but just in case here’s our top ten of tips for safer ladder use.

Ten Tips For Ladder Safety 1. 2.

3. 4. 5.

Never work in icy conditions, or when surfaces may be slippery or wet When you lean a ladder against a structure make sure that it is solid enough to bear the weight of the ladder and yourself. Always keep one hand on the ladder while working Ensure the ladder and its rungs are not damaged Never use electrical equipment, such as an electric saw, while working on a ladder - they are potentially lethal should a fall occur

6.

Only use a ladder when you can be sure it has a safe and secure base to stand on 7. Ensure the space around the bottom of your ladder is free from obstacles and sharp objects or anything else that may cause injury if you fall 8. Do not store a ladder in a place where children may be tempted to climb it 9. Never work sideways and don’t overstretch yourself - get down and move the ladder instead 10. Always use a ladder at the correct angle (a gradient of about 1 in 4)

.... or better still get an expert in - there are plenty on these pages to choose from. Then sit down, put your feet up, watch TV and stay warm and safe!

.... And When Doing Jobs Around The Home As Well

S

ince we’re on the subject of safety it might be a good idea for all of us to bear in mind that according to the ambulance service at this time of year, when a young man’s fancy turns to thoughts of fixing that tap that’s been dripping all winter, there is always a marked increase in calls caused by activities associated with DIY, ranging from fires ignited by blow torches involved in paint stripping to accidents with electrical appliances or simply people giving themselves a really bad bang on the thumb with the business end of a hammer. The total number of DIY related hospital visits per year is 220,000 (believe it or not) and 87,000 of those will be the result of using tools. So which tools are the most dangerous - well you know we love a list so here goes. Top of the shop - knives - followed in order by saws, grinders, hammers, chisels and screwdrivers. Welding equipment comes in tenth but by now you’re looking at these stats and wondering why anyone is allowed to do

any handyman jobs at all, especially since 3,000 people a year are injured by glue and 1,300 by wallpaper. So how do we go about keeping ourselves safe in the face of this onslaught of disasters? Well .... 1.

2.

3. 4.

5.

First and foremost always check that the task you are undertaking is within your capabilities. Get advice - most DIY shops will advise for free on how best to use materials and equipment. Always make sure that safety instructions are read in full and complied with. Check you have the correct tool for the job. Ensure children and pets are safe, with obstructions removed from your workplace. If you have to check or repair an electrical tool, turn it off at the mains.

6. Always uncoil electrical extension cables fully, as these can overheat and cause a fire. 7. Never use multi-way adapters when working with high amperage tools. 8. Gas appliances should only be repaired by an approved contractor. 9. Flammable liquids should be used in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions, secured in containers and used in small quantities, well away from the house and other risks – naked flames or cigarettes. 10. Ventilate when using adhesives and flammable liquids by opening windows and doors, and always ensure that no naked flames or power tools are close by.

our years ago Will Toyne decided to give up his job as a dealership mechanic and branch out on his own and in that time his firm, Lincs VWA, has established itself as one of the leading auto mechanics operations in the area. They’re based in large premises on Station Road, Tetney (opposite Norburn’s Garden Centre), so does being out in the sticks put potential customers off I ask. Will certainly doesn’t think so. “We offer a full collection and delivery service plus use of a courtesy car” he explains, “so there’s no reason why location should be an issue. Plus we have all the benefits of being out of town - extra space, better parking and occasional deer wandering through the yard. It’s much better than being cramped up in a tiny little workshop in the middle of town.” Will’s one of those born mechanics who

It’s a new and exciting field of expertise and with the ever increasing complexity of modern engines it promises to become a big part of his business so watch the volkswagen & audi specialists this space.

So what is engine remapping? Your car’s Engine Control Unit (ECU) is the computer management system which controls the ignition timing, air/fuel mixture, turbo boost pressure and sped or rev limits. Manufacturers always deliver vehicles with the ECU set to the factory defaults because they need it to be legal in as many countries as possible but that means that your new car is likely to be set up to under perform. Remapping involves complex diagnostics on the engine to find the perfect set up - delivering improved performance and economy. A VW Golf can see a power boost from 207bhp to 251bhp and torque up from 280Nm to 324Nm and fuel economy can increase by 7-10%!

Grimsby Carpet Store Boss Aims To Keep Things Local Customers who visit United Carpets and Beds in Grimsby know they’re in for a great deal – but they may not realise quite what a local success story the store is. Run by franchisee John West, the store has become one of the most successful in the company, which has more than 60 stores across the North and Midlands. John puts it down to great service and value. “People round here know a good deal when they see it – and they appreciate quality,” he says.

“We always have a fantastic range of carpets, vinyls, woodfloor and laminates, and because we’re a big

company, we offer great prices. We also have lots of roll ends that

people can buy and take away with them. The fact that we are also a local business also goes down well.” John – who has been able to take on an extra full-time member of staff to help with demand in the store – acknowledges the importance of contributing to the local community and is keen to put something back. He’s sponsoring two players for Grimsby Town’s youth team and ensures that a large proportion of the advertising budget is spent locally.

Law change means owners can’t be penalised for using independent garages

O

nce upon a time if you bought a new car you would often find yourself locked into a contract that said that if you used a garage other than the dealership then your warranty would be void. It was more expensive than using an independent mechanic of course but if you wanted the car there wasn’t much choice but to sign on the dotted line. The good news is that changes to the law mean that motorists can no longer be forced to use dealership mechanics and can use the garage of their choice while still keeping their warranty protection provided the parts and work come up to an approved standard (check with your garage about this). It’s great news for motorists, who save money, and for the garage trade who finally have a level playing field and are can compete on things that really matter like lower prices and improved personal service. So next time you’re looking to get work done on your car don’t just go straight to the main dealer - you can probably get lower prices and better service at an independent (you’ll find some on these very pages) and you won’t have to risk your warranty!

The Hennessey Venom GT Say Hello To The World’s Fastest Sports Car

O

n February 14 2014 at the Kennedy Space Centre, on the 3.2 mile Space Shuttle landing runway, the Hennessey Venom GT set a new world speed record for 2 seat sports cars by reaching a top speed of 270.49 mph (435.31 km/h). The Venom GT accelerated at an average rate of 1 mph per second as it took just 10.1 seconds to go from 260 to 270 mph. The record run was made over a distance of 2.4 miles, which allowed the Venom just eight tenths of a mile to stop. Thankfully, its carbon ceramic brakes were able to haul the car down from 270 mph well before the end of the runway’s 1000 ft threshold. “I knew the car had it in it, but it’s a thrill to officially validate the Venom GT’s 270 mph speed,” said Michelin test driver Brian Smith. “Venturing anywhere above 200 mph, let alone 270, is not to be taken lightly, and we’re elated to have accomplished our goal.”

Smoking in cars - bad for your health and bad for your wallet

A

s you may have noticed Parliament has recently voted in favour of a ban on smoking in cars carrying children but the AA has taken the opportunity to highlight the damage which smoking can do to the health of your car and to its value. According to the AA smoking in cars reduces resale value by up to 10% and they point out that it is much more difficult to sell used cars that stink of old cigarette smoke or have cigarette burns on the seat fabric. “It’s extremely difficult to eradicate the odour of tobacco from a car’s interior and this is very unattractive to the majority of drivers who don’t smoke,” says Edmund King, AA president. “We estimate that the resale value of your car may be cut by up to 10% because it smells of smoking. Many buyers will just walk away from a fag ridden car. We even see people advertising ‘one nonsmoking owner’ which seems to increase the value,” he added. “Smoking not only damages your health but can damage your car’s health too.”

Want to beat the traffic? Then drive a wacky car! Classic or ‘wacky’ cars, such as 2CVs, old VW Beetles and Escorts may have an advantage in beating traffic queues as many drivers are more likely to give way to them, according to a poll of 17,000 motorists. However car envy seems to affect some with one in five drivers admitting they are less likely to give way to a 4x4 or expensive luxury car. Although perhaps surprisingly it is the more affluent drivers who are most likely to snub the expensive cars. Some drivers seem to actively want to slow down ‘boy racers’ as 5% admit that they would be more likely to drive slowly if the driver behind was wearing a baseball cap. Males are twice as likely as females to act in this manner.
