Indy N Ink Body Art At Its Best
Since body art boutique Indy N Ink opened in 2009, it has taken the art of tattooing in Grimsby to new heights. Owner Indy Nijjar (who has recently completed a Masters Leadership and Management with Dissertation on The Changing Face of the Tattoo Industry in Contemporary Society) and his team offer a bespoke service to their clients and have produced thousands of exclusive top quality designs. Indy says: “For too long people have had a negative view of tattoos. By producing unique designs, we are helping to demolish the taboos that traditionally surround the industry. Our clientele includes many professional people and events such as Wimbledon have shown many top people wearing their art with pride as sports and pop culture already do.” One of the main reasons for the success of the boutique is the creativity of my team. We believe that even the smallest piece should be designed with the same care as our larger art. Having a design on your body is a very personal thing and we think every piece is important. The standard of our artwork and creativity sets us apart from other studios and we’re proud of that.
I’ve been in lots of tattoo studios and there is often a lack of enthusiasm and customer service. That’s why I decided that our boutique would be different. I have tried to revolutionise the image of tattooing here on the East Coast. When someone visits us we strive to make their experience as comfortable as possible. Our dedicated team will discuss the client’s ideas and ensure they get the right artwork to express their feelings so they will always wear their ink with pride. We offer exclusivity in our designs and personalise the work for the client - simplicity or complexity, dependent on request. We only do any design once, and we always try to find something sentimental to represent within the piece. Our portfolio covers almost every type of work and style from around the world. Ask at reception for a consultation to discuss your exact requirements. We offer full comprehensive
advice on the care of your artwork prior to starting and on completion, along with aftercare advice whenever required. We also have full aftercare products to aid the healing process to ensure your body art looks and feels great immediately.” We are Department of Health registered” Indy explains. “We use a Grade 1 autoclave, so our equipment is always sterile and our environment is clean and safe at all times.”
Above - Indy Nijjar, proprietor of Indy N Ink, photographed with his son.
Indy, who recently starred in Channel 4’s Come Dine With Me added: “We have had clients who have travelled from London, Manchester and Leeds but we are even more proud of our international reputation; clients from as far afield as Canada, New Zealand, Australia and Los Angeles. Almost half the clientele we get are first time enthusiasts. Our oldest client to date was 76 and had his first tattoo done with us in memory of his late wife. We have clientele of all ages but also adhere strictly to the law as part of our Corporate Social Responsibility. Expressing who or where you are in life has no taboos. Be proud.”

Grimsby Central Hall
the home of real music
First opened in 1936, Grimsby Central Hall is the oldest surviving continuous concert venue in North East Lincolnshire and yet, for many, it remains an undiscovered gem. When you step through the doors in Duncombe Street it’s like crossing the threshold of the Tardis; an expanded world opens before your very eyes! There’s a 700 seat auditorium that retains many original art deco features and offers the finest acoustics in the area and if you place your ear to the wall you may just hear the lingering echoes of some legendary performers. During its 75 year history, the Central Hall has hosted concerts by an amazing array of world class artistes, reflecting a diversity of entertainment; from swing bands to brass bands, rock groups to classical recitals, jazz, choral, orchestral and stage musicals.
For the forthcoming season at the Central Hall we are very excited to be presenting some of the best live acts and touring shows around including some fantastic tribute events that recreate great moments from the history of popular music. They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and although it may have started with the Beatles and Elvis, in recent years there has been an explosion of tribute acts and shows. Some to artists who have left us to join that great stage in the sky, some honour bands that no longer exist and others allow venues, such as ours, to offer a flavour of performers beyond our reach. We are delighted to be bringing you a thrilling selection of the best tributes to artistes who have built legacies that endure in the wonderful world that is entertainment. In March, with an abundance of class and style, we take you on a trip back in time to vintage 60’s Las Vegas hip and cool, with wonderful memories of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin & Sammy Davis Junior. The following month,

Easter Beaster?
Fans of metal are in for a treat on March 30th when black metal masters Primitive Graven Image headline an Easter Beaster night at The Matrix Club in top town Grimsby. Primitive Graven Image was formed in 2006 by brothers Rob and Luke Lehane and they were soon noticed by Pennsylvania based Open Grave Records who signed them and released the band’s debut album “Traversing The Awesome Night”. Their 2010 album ‘Celebrating Impending Chaos’ showed influences ranging from the epic death metal of Nile to the misanthropic noise of Anaal Nathrakh and The Axis Of Perdition, mixing 70’s progressive rock with traditional chaotic metal thrash riffs.
Their live shows offer unrelenting fury, warp speed blast beats, deranged groove, tribal rage and massive intensity - they have played the Fusion Festival, Bloodstock, Cork Winterfest and many other metal events. Support on the night comes from Ninkharsag, Infernal Creation, Severed Heaven and Gloomlurker - doors open 6.30pm with the first act

Everybody loves Lincolnshire Pork so we asked our friends at Rare Breed Lincolnshire Hog Roast to tell us about their favourite Sunday lunch recipe and here’s what they said. “For special occasions we mix up a pesto of about 2oz butter, 2oz brown sugar and English mustard and salt to taste. We rub this mixture into the top and ends of a good quality Lincolnshire pork joint of about 5lb weight. We like to let the joint roast really slow, in foil, for 3 or 4 hours on a low heat, (about 160° of gas mark 3), but we take the foil off and turn the heat up to 200° or gas mark 6 for the last half an hour to get that perfect crackle on the meat. We serve with roast potatoes and a big pan of slow roasted onions, apples and sweet peppers wonderful colours on the plate and it tastes fantastic!”
Bring on the Bramleys Amid all the excitement over the glorious fine weather we’ve been having it may have escaped your attention that February 3rd sees the start of Bramley Apple Week so we thought we’d offer you a recipe to celebrate this most English of fruit. Bramleys have been grown in Lincolnshire for many years, being well suited to conditions in the South of the county and they are widely regarded as the best and most versatile cooking apples in the world, equally at home in a sticky toffee pudding like the one shown here or made into sauce to serve with some fine free range Lincolnshire pork. The first Bramley apple tree was grown from seed by Mary Ann Brailsford in 1809 in the Nottinghamshire town of Southwell. The name comes from the owner of the cottage in whose garden it grew when it first became commercially available. Those few pips planted by a little girl in her garden are responsible for what is today a £50 million industry, with commercial growers across Kent, East Anglia and the West Midlands. Believe it or not the tree still stands to this day and the citizens of Southwell throw a birthday party for it every year! Our recipe for Bramley Apple & Sticky Toffee Pudding comes courtesy of the good people at www.bramleyapples.co.uk where you can find lots more recipe ideas and facts about the Bramley apple.

botanical? According to industry experts this year is set to be the year when our love affair with bright colours and big statement designs comes to an end and something all together more natural and soothing comes to take their place. So if you’re a big fan of gardens and all things horticultural you’re in luck because 2013 is going to be the year of the botanical! UKTV, Trendible and EasyLiving have all picked out botanical as
being one of the main high street trends of the year so look out for leaf patterns, flowers, trees in greens and browns and yellows and autumn reds - in the kitchen, in the living room and on the catwalk! And we’re not talking chintzy and old fashioned here these are going to be bold and striking patterns. With an innovative blend of simplistic foliage prints, you can be sure to evoke a natural sense of style, very reminiscent
Above - Dark botanical Treviso metal curtains by Hillary’s Below - Folia Collection by Harlequin - a great example of the botanical look in the living room
of Scandinavian design which is growing in popularity. Olive green, mustard yellow and earthy red, set against neutral backdrops of grey and pewter are the core colourways that make up this trend and if you look carefully on the high street you’ll see that it’s already appearing on the shelves. Soon you’re going to need a pith helmet and machete just to go into the soft furnishings department so take care and have a great time decorating your home to take advantage of these fabulous new styles!

New Year, New Garden
Garden trends for 2013 Have you cut back on your garden budget, well if so you’re not the only one. According to top horticulturist Diogo Correia this year will see gardens becoming less fussy and wasteful of time and money and moving towards simplicity and value for money while continuing to explore sustainability. It’s back to basics with the aim being to create a sense of familiarity and stability as families continue to enhance their properties rather than move. There is also a return to more
conservative layouts. Simple shrubs that are low maintenance are in, hardy perennials are back in fashion, expensive showy semi tropicals that tend to do badly in the winter and need replacing are out. The ideal will be to keep things neat and tidy without dedicating too much time or money to the tasks - aiming for a strong green backdrop all year round with less emphasis on flowers throughout the year. Fruit and vegetable growing will be popular as will sustainability in the garden - collecting water,

Don’t Let Floods Spark Problems With Your Electrics! According to forecasters we may be in for a wet spring with flooding possible in all areas so some advice from the Electrical Contractors Association on how to deal with the effects of water on home electrics comes at a good time. They say that if floods are threatening your property, unplug all electrical appliances in the lower part of your home, switch off sockets and the main supply. If you don’t have an opportunity to switch electrical equipment, appliances and sockets off before the influx of water, you should do this as soon as it is safe to do so
immediately after the flood. Following any flood damage, seek advice from a reputable electrical contractor. Look for someone skilled and qualified, reliable, and fully certified who offers a full guarantee. During a flood, the household electricity system should trip on contact with water. Once the wiring has dried out it may not need to be repaired
or replaced but it will need testing and some sockets may need to be changed. If re-wiring is needed, speak to your electrician about the possibility of raising sockets and fuse boxes. This could prevent future damage if your area was to flood again. An electrical contractor will also be able to test your appliances to ensure they are fit for use. Even if they seem fine appliances should not be used until they have been tested. Water damage to appliances could lead to a fire or serious electric shock - the last thing you need on top of the flood!

A Day In The Life
A Day In The Life
with Derrick Saxby of Saxby Roofing
We’re early risers in the Saxby household – the alarm goes off at 5.30am. Our cat (called Blackie the Dog, it’s a long story) keeps out of the way for the first hour or so of the day. My wife Dawn owns the Cutting Edge Salon in Freeman Street and our son Stuart works with her there. I work with another son, Ewen. I like to be on the road by 6.30am. Sometimes, especially when it’s dark and freezing it can be a pain, but I still always look forward to going to work – and you just can’t afford to let the weather get you down. I’ve been in this line of work for over 40 years now, and when I got made redundant in 2000 I took my redundancy pay and bought a van and decided to try working for myself. I had been working locally for a number of years and lots of people knew me which helped me get started. Of course sometimes the weather can make life really difficult for businesses that involve a lot of working out of doors but that’s when you just have to be determined and not let it get to you. When customers are depending on you it’s vitally
important not to let them down. We pick up our colleagues Craig and Brian en route – we’re a good team – that’s so important in this job, you need people around you who you can rely on. We do a wide range of work, roofing, fascias, guttering, both commercial and domestic. At the moment we have two really interesting projects in progress: one is the reroofing of Burnham Manor, the other is renovation of Cabourne Vicarage. We’ve also done a lot of work for Toll Bar Academy. These are exciting prestige projects and it’s a real feather in our caps to be chosen for them. We work right through till it gets dark most days and then it’s home for tea - often it will be something that I’ve
A Day In The Life
prepared in the morning and left for the day in the slow cooker. Most nights we’re exhausted and in bed by nine or ten o’clock. When I’m not working I like to spend time cooking (my pork and pineapple curry is pretty good even if I say so myself), taking photographs and of course spending time with my family.
Above Derrick Saxby: photographer, curry chef and proprietor of Saxby Roofing.
We have two more sons - Jason, who lives in Grimsby is a plumber and Neil is a design engineer and lives in Daventry. Our daughter Louise lives and works in Keadby. We also have thirteen fabulous grandchildren and whenever possible (usually about twice a year) we like to have a big family get together. On Boxing Day we had seventeen family members round for dinner and at one point there were eleven grandchildren outside in the hot tub. It was a great day and it’s times like that create the memories that make all the early mornings and hard work worthwhile.

Take Better Care Of Your

SKIN
with Dr Jo Ojadi of The Grimsby Skin Health Clinic The skin is the largest organ of the body – it can be 15% of total body weight and it performs lots of important functions, including protecting us from disease and chemical agents, regulating body temperature, and preventing excessive water loss. Because we only see the outside layer (which is called the epidermis) it’s easy for us to underestimate just how complex and important the skin really is. It seems like a single layer but in fact it is made up of many specialised layers and contains various types of cell each with its own particular job to do. These include keratinocytes, (which form a barrier to environmental damage and pathogens), melanocytes which control skin pigment, and fibroblasts which help the skin recover from damage. The skin also contains blood vessels, hair follicles, sweat glands and nerves – so as you can see it is a very complicated structure indeed. Because it is so important and
complex the skin is very precious and we need to look after it carefully, not least because of the skin’s profound effect on our appearance. Damaged or unhealthy skin can have harmful effects on our self esteem and confidence and can affect our work life, social life and even our mental health. In fact many of the visible problems associated with the skin, such as excessive hair, lumps and bumps or pigmentation issues can lead to depression, which can be severe in some cases. One of the most common and potentially serious of conditions which can affect our skin is photoaging or sun damage – usually caused by excessive exposure to the sun’s rays over a period of years. The rays contain ultra violet radiation which can cause cell damage to the outer layer of the skin – usually the damage will show worse on smokers and on people with type I and II skin – that is to say people with pale, fair skin. (The
photograph below shows some of the effects of photoaging.) So what treatments are available for photoaging? Some things we can do for ourselves. The first step is to reduce further damage by use of clothing or sunblock of factor 30 or more. Next the sufferer needs to ensure that their skin is well hydrated, probably by using emollient creams many of which can be obtained over the counter without need for a prescription.
Above - Typical symptoms of Photoaging
A doctor may then be able to prescribe laser treatment or light pulse treatment – a therapy known as ‘photo rejuvenation’. Botox can help to reduce fine lines and wrinkles and derma fillers can be used where the wrinkles are deeper. DR JO OJADI , (MBBS, DCH, MRCGP, PG Dip Derm. ARE YOU LOOKING FOR A
NEW LAPTOP? DJ Ellis of DJIT Services offers some advice
A new laptop can be an expensive purchase and in the present economic climate none of us can afford to waste money - so I thought I’d set out some basic principles for getting the best possible value when you next go computer shopping. The choice of machines available can be overwhelming - so here are a few basic pointers to help you to make sense of what’s available. Your first decision should be what size of screen you need. Most laptops today are a 15.6 inch screen size. But if you need something a bit bigger then you can go for a 17 inch screen. These bigger laptops are not as portable as the smaller size and are more of a desktop replacement. Other sizes are the 10.1 inch Netbooks, very good for your kids to take to their friends’ houses but not usually very powerful. As the name suggests a Netbook is really just a tool for internet surfing. The next thing to look at is the processor; this is the brain in the laptop. The faster it is, the more calculations the laptop can do at once. The speed of a processor is measured in Gigahertz (GHZ) and the rule is the higher the better
You should look for something over 2.0 GHZ. Lower ratings are likely to be quite slow. Your best bet would be to stick with Intel’s Pentium dual core processors and i3, i5 and i7 if your budget can stretch to them. Second on the list of decisions is the amount of memory the laptop has. There are two types of memory in a laptop; the RAM and the Hard Drive. The RAM (Random Access Memory) is the memory that the computer uses when it is performing functions or moving information around between its components. The more RAM a machine has the more information it can process and the faster it will work. You need a minimum of 2GB (Gigabytes) but 4GB would be the better. The Hard Drive is the storage device that computers use. The bigger the drive the more can be stored.

IT & Computing
Hard drives come in various sizes, typically 320GB, 500GB, 750GB or 1TB (Terabyte). With normal computer usages 320GB would be fine and 500GB is plenty. One last thing is for the film addicts, and that is the DVD drive. Some laptop can come with a BluRay player for watching your HD films. So to recap a standard laptop would be a 15.6” screen with an Intel dual core processor, 4GB of RAM and a 500GB hard drive. These would cost around £360 depending on the time of year. In some less reputable shops prices tend to go up before bank holidays so the shop can pretend they are having a sale. Don’t forget to buy good antivirus software. Laptops sold on my website include this and also setting them up in your own home to your Wi Fi. All the best and have a great time with your new computer! D.J. Ellis D.J.I.T. Services

Basic Precautions Can Deter Thieves
New research has shown that burglars target property where the owners have not followed the basic rules of home security. Leaving valuables in clear view, partially open windows, unlocked sheds and a lack of outside lighting all give burglars the go ahead sign. The key deterrents which would drive criminal gangs away from a property were gravel driveways, dogs, new secure looking doors and locks, sensor lights and CCTV.

Are You Driving
WINTERWISE? Driving in winter can be a nightmare but if you keep your vehicle well serviced (by our good friend Will Toyne at Lincs VWA Services for example) and adapt your driving to the road conditions then you can make yourself a lot safer. If you’re forced to drive in the snow plan your journey - busier roads are more likely to be gritted and snow cleared. Try to set off gently in second gear, avoiding high revs. High gears improve control but get your speed right. Too fast reduces control, too slow loses momentum. Keep moving, even if it is slow. On bends reduce speed early, before you turn the wheel and slow down before you descend a hill. If you get stuck don’t keep trying to move if the wheels spin. This will only dig you in deeper. Turn your wheels from side to side a few times to push snow out of the way and be sparing with the accelerator to ease your car out. Use a shovel to clear snow away from the wheels and the underside of the car. Pour sand, gravel or salt in the path of the wheels, to help get traction and shift from forward to reverse, and back again. When you’re in gear, give a light touch on the gas until the vehicle gets going.

REIMS CATHEDRAL
LOOKING FOR A JACKDAW? by Jim White He’d climbed up here, God alone knows why. Looking for the jackdaw possibly. Just found a door open and had to explore. Reims Cathedral, beautiful on the outside, disappointing on the inside, so he looked for something behind the facade. Now he was stuck, totally stuck. Hanging onto an angel’s neck right above the front door. The door had been stiff and he’d shouldered it and shot out onto the gallery, slipped and straight over the top. Thank God for the angel with its crumbling twelfth century stone wings. What a pillock, he should have stayed with the others. Too ruddy nosey for his own good. Oh hell a crowd was gathering in
the square below him. All he could do was hang on and pray. How he was going to get out of this, heaven only knew. “Well mate!” he said to the angel. “I’ve only been here ten minutes and I’m scared to death. I wonder how long you’ve been here?” “Seven hundred years.” the angel said with a smile. “Don’t worry, you’ll be all right.” The smile widened. He froze, was he cracking up, and there was no one else here. He forced himself to look at the angel; it smiled and flicked its stone wings. He closed his eyes in fear. When he opened them again he was on the gallery above the great window, looking down

on the angel below. It was still smiling. The crowd had gone and he went inside through the small wooden door, shaking with disbelief. He slowly climbed down the stairs and went outside, one of his friends said, “Come on Bill where the heck have you been; wandering off again?” He looked up at the group of angel statues above the front door and he could have sworn the smiling angel winked at him. Another Palm Sunday miracle? Thanks for the story Jim.
