The Moonfruit Collective A new publishing venture for the local area

Moonfruit

is a brand new publishing and arts collective set up initially by Sime Naylor and Tim Michael as a vehicle through which to promote their children’s book, Earthwood, a woodland story with a sound ecological message. The collective has expanded to include Sue Naylor and Josie-Anne Gray as members. Sime Naylor and Josie-Anne Gray have both recently published volumes of poetry under the Moonfruit umbrella. Sime’s book, Feeling the Earth, Touching the Sky is a collection of poems that celebrates a year of walking in the Wolds. In it Sime explores his appreciation of nature and the seasons. Josie-Anne’s collection, The Poplars, is more of a dreamscape that examines the relationship between the conscious and unconscious mind. Both collections along with Earthwood are available to purchase in the Grimsby branch of Waterstone’s and from www.amazon.co.uk The members of the Moonfruit Collective are currently working to create a programme of

workshops and activities to take into schools. The purpose of these will be to enrich early years learning and the Key Stage One curriculum. Some preliminary work that has already been done in schools has been well received. The members of the collective are keen to help bring imagination and creativity into the classroom and to support teachers who recognise the value of such work but do not always have the time to pursue it because of various constraints. The Moonfruit Collective have been a feature at recent events such as The Culture House’s Fabulous Fair at St James’ Church on March 10th where they had an arts and crafts stall. Sue Naylor makes highly individual craft items using reclaimed and recycled fabrics and other materials. Sime Naylor is also an artist and sells original oil paintings and prints. The Moonfruit books as well as original cartoon prints by Tim Michael also prove popular and a talking point for people looking at the stall. Over the coming months the members of Moonfruit hope to bring their work to a wider audience. A website is in development but for now, for further information the collective can be contacted via Facebook where both Josie-Anne Gray and Sue Naylor have pages. Alternatively, contact Josie-Anne via email at jogray2@ntlworld. com or via her website www.josieannegray.co.uk

It

can sometimes seem like there’s precious little intelligent life on our little planet. So where can you go to find some? Well thanks to the good people at SETI (the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence project based at Harvard and Berkeley) you can start looking into outer space for it. The new website www.setilive.org offers thew opportunity for web users to monitor live images of radio frequencies from deep space and search for patterns which might indicate life on other planets. Of course there are computers scanning the images as well but the scientists hope that there may be patterns which the human eye can spot better than even the fastest computer.

So what are you waiting for? because believe it or not summer is definitely on its way! Fantastic Festivals

What could be better than soaking up a few rays, chugging a glass of your favourite tipple, sharing some good food with friends and listening to great music? If that sounds good to you then the chances are you’re a fan of summer music festivals. The history of music festivals goes back a long way - to the Pythian games of Ancient Greece at least and encompasses all kinds of music. The Promenade concerts began in 1895 and are still drawing classical music lovers in their thousands every year, but for most of us summer music festivals are about rock and pop music. The first rock and pop festival was the Fantasy Fair and Magic Mountain Festival at Mt Tamalpais,

Summer Summer

California in June 1967. A week later the Monterey Pop festival was held for the first time the rest as they say is history. In the UK the always popular Glastonbury Festival began (as the P i l t o n Festival) in 1970 and nowadays draws an audience around the 140,000 mark. Pretty big, but way short of the million or so who attend the annual Summerfest in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA. Fortunately we don’t have to travel that far to hear great summer music in this area - there’s a fine line up of music events on our own doorsteps. Kicking things of this year is the local urban music scene with GYPO Fest at McCormack’s

Bar on April 28. The Folk and Cider Festival steams into the Cleethorpes Light Railway on t h e 25-27 May featuring music by Joe Solo, Starvin Sid and Dick Appleton, Morris dancing and more types of cider than you can shake a bladder on a stick at. Next up are some of the biggest names in blues rocking Pleasure Island to its foundations at the Blues Festival on June 24th. Among those lined up to play are the legendary Connie Lush, Wishbone Ash featuring Martin Turner and Robin Trower who first rose to fame as guitarist and vocalist with Procul Harum. From June 29 - July 1 it’s the turn of jazz to take centre stage as the ever popular Jazz festival takes place at the Memorial Hall featuring pianist Stan Tracey and the Tim Kliphuis/Paulus Schäfer Gypsy Jazz Quartet among many others. All in all a summer of music to really look forward to. We’ll see you there!

Artists who have played at the festival in previous years are keen to make a return visit and say that they thoroughly enjoy the event. The festival is made possible because of the support and generosity of Chris Shaw and his team at the Light Railway. Funding support also comes from NE Lincs Council via the Festival and Events Fund and from private sponsorship. One of the most significant features of the festival is that it is free to attend and this is due to the funding and support given to it. Local author Josie Anne Gray publishes her first novel on Amazon

Just

One Night, a novel by Josie Anne Gray is now available for purchase from the Amazon Kindle store for £1.98. It is an episodic novel dealing with the events of one night in the late 1990’s. To whet your appetite here is a short passage from the book. ‘At quarter to eight two lions padding on giant paws along the high street caused Larissa to come to a complete standstill. Her eyes widened and her breathing quickened. ‘I must stand here,’ she thought rationally, ‘and see what happens.’ Surprisingly she felt no fear and allowed her shoulders to relax and breathing to steady. Perhaps it was disbelief or wonder that held her steady and still while the two lions circled her, one slinking low the other more upright and confident. ‘What beautiful creatures,’ Larissa allowed herself to muse, admiring the male whose mane was just sprouting in great, unruly tufts. Larissa knew little about lions but she did know that males grew their mane in the equivalent of their adolescence. She was more wary of the female, the one who was low slung and prowling. She avoided eye contact and focused on her admiration for the creatures. After what seemed like an age but was mere seconds Larissa decided to take a risk. Slowly and with great care and faith she put out her hand, palm up and closed her eyes. After a moment she felt hot breath caress her hand, the sweep of a damp nose across it, the flick of a strong tongue and then nothing. When she opened her eyes the lions had gone. It was as if they had never been there.’

“We have employed Geoff for many years now and we have no hesitation in highly recommending him. He is a very reliable, hard working and polite man. The garden looks a picture.” - Mrs M.E. - New Waltham “In this day and age it is difficult to find good reliable help, but I have been lucky with Geoff’s Gardening Services. He is a treasure”.

Summer is great - it’s everybody’s favourite time of year - but it can also be a time when people feel a lot of pressure to be in perfect shape. The fitness and beauty industries have become a huge part of our lives. Sometimes what we need to pick ourselves up is a new look - maybe a trip to the cosmetics counter, some new clothes perhaps or a new hair style. If that isn’t enough then maybe we need to be pampered a little - that’s where Beautique Skincare come into their own. But for some people bigger changes are called for - perhaps they need to lose weight or get fit for the good of their health. But do people go about meeting their goals in the correct way? In many cases the answer is no. For example many health conscious people either avoid certain foods or restrict their intake in order to lose weight. This is frequently unhealthy and ineffective as it can cause weight loss only in the short run, and may slow your metabolism making it harder to lose weight in the future. What is required is less emphasis on food consumption and more emphasis on fitness. People can get fit by themselves of course but often they lack the

motivation, advice and support to help them meet their goals. Perhaps you can find a friend or family member to train with but if not then perhaps you should consider getting a personal trainer. A personal trainer offers help and encouragement, assessing your current fitness levels, setting reachable goals and inspiring you to meet those goals. With a personal trainer the gym goer has much more direction and focus with the help of a riskfree and individually assigned programme backed up with continual mentoring. Whatever approach you take reaching your fitness goals can have effects on many areas of your life, including improved self confidence, increased energy levels, deeper sleep, fewer illnesses, and reduced back pain it’s certainly repays the effort you put in! All it takes is 30 minutes of vigorous exercise 3-5 times a week to get your fitness journey started! So what are you waiting for - make a start today on getting fir and I promise you won’t regret it. See you at the gym!

SECURITY

have warned householders to take extra care with home security over the summer months. Some summers see a rise in opportunistic burglaries as people leave doors and windows open to let the cool air in but of course this can allow criminals access as well. Most burglaries could be prevented simply by taking some basic security precautions so we thought we’d give you a few suggestions of small steps you can take to keep your home safe. For instance • • •

• • • •

Keep your doors and windows locked – especially if you go out but even if you are in. If you’re upstairs then lock the downstairs doors, if you’re in the back garden then lock the front door. Don’t leave keys on display especially car keys. These are often targeted by burglars and may not be covered by your home or car insurance. Keep valuable items such as cash, wallets, passports and tools stored out of sight. Be aware of what can be seen through your windows from outside and take steps to make your home look less tempting to burglars. Install solid bicycle chaining points. If you’re going out leave radios or lights on a timer. Install good outside lights and visible burglar alarms. Expert assistance may be called for here – check out the N Force Security advert on the left. Make sure your fences are in good condition and your gates are lockable. Consider installing privacy screens to gates - see Privatect on the left. Never leave a spare key hidden outside the house.

If we all take these basic steps then there’s a good chance that we can avoid the trauma of burglary and just get on with enjoying the summer. Time for a barbecue anyone?

it’s only April and already there are hosepipe bans in force all over the country and we are being told to get ready for full scale drought conditions later in the year. That makes it a good time of year to be looking at your domestic plumbing to check for water wastage. Poorly maintained systems can lead to higher bills - a dripping tap can lose over 60 litres of water a week and if you’re on a meter you’ll feel that in your wallet. Many water companies offer flow restrictors or aerators for cutting consumption and these are worth checking out but best play safe and make sure you get any remedial work done by trained professional plumbers.

People People A day in the life of ....

Richard Turner of John Turner’s Butchers

My

day starts early. My first job of the day is to drive to our Bakery on Wilton Road to pick up bread for the shop. I’m used to early rising – my dad was a butcher before me so I knew what was involved when I entered the

satisfaction to see that everything in the shop is just so as I unlock the door and take our famous butcher figure out onto the pavement. He’s a popular attraction in his own right and lots of children get their pictures taken with him in the summer. A lot of people like to come early to get their meat early when there is no queue and it’s nice to spend a little time chatting with our regular customers - many of them have been coming to the shop for as long as I have! We’re an old fashioned butchers and we pride ourselves on the personal touch – knowing our customers’ preferences and requirements for example. Some butchers have been hit badly by the rise of the big supermarkets but we have managed survive and flourish by offering more than just meat and bread – where we can we will give advice on what cuts to choose or how to cook them so they are at their best. Because we are an old fashioned butchers we buy most of our meat as whole carcasses which we butcher on the premises. I entered the family business when I left school so I’m an old hand at the butchering and trimming but it’s harder work then some might imagine. A full carcass can take a day to prepare completely. We source as much as possible from local providers – Lincolnshire beef, pork and lamb, Norfolk chickens and turkeys. Deliveries start early and go right through the day so it’s always busy, but fortunately I have a great team to help me. There are three full time butchers – myself, Bob and George, who have worked here a long time and we also have two trainee butchers and many people on sales duty in the shop. My wife Michelle works with me in the shop which is great because otherwise we might hardly get to see each other. She’s always on hand for advice and support - we’re a team inside and outside of work. After the breakfast rush is over it doesn’t go quiet - that’s when we tend to get a rush on cooked meats, pies and sausage rolls as people do their shopping ready for lunchtime. This is a good time for preparing our famous prize winning Lincolnshire pork sausages. We make sausages three days a week and they are always in huge demand – it’s one of the things we’re famous for. We have a special recipe which we keep secret – we don’t use packet mixes of seasonings

– it’s all weighed and measured by hand to make sure they are always perfect. At lunchtimes it’s all hands on deck – it can get really mad in the shop – but it’s great to know that our produce is so popular. I wouldn’t swap that for the world. In the afternoons I tend to concentrate on the wholesale side of the business, preparing deliveries for the cafes, hotels and restaurants that we supply. This is a thriving side of the business and the drivers and vans are always busy. We start clearing away about 4pm and finally close the doors and bring the butcher back in at

trade. His shop was in Seaview Street and he was the John Turner that the business is named for. In the winter when the mornings are cold it can be a bit daunting but when it’s cold out and you walk into the warmth of the bakery and smell the fresh bread it is just fantastic. The bakery staff work all night making pies, bread and sandwiches and they are still warm when I load them up. My business partner Merryck Swallow runs the bakery side of the operation – it has expanded enormously over the years and I’d never be able to manage without him. I’m at the shop in St Peter’s Avenue by 6 and soon after that the first batch of bacon and sausages will be cooking ready for the breakfast rush when we open at 8 o’clock. It always gives me a lot of

5.30. I’m usually pretty tired but there’s at least another hour of cleaning to do before I can go. We don’t have big metal shutters on the shop window and passers by can look in at any time of the evening or night – so it’s good to know that the shop always looks spotless. Outside of work my main interests are my family, football (Grimsby Town and Manchester United), fishing and horse racing. A day at the races with my wife Michelle and my children is my idea of a perfect day out. At various times most of my children have worked in the business although at the moment only Luke works at the bakery. My youngest son, Lleyton, thinks he may be a butcher if he doesn’t make it as a professional footballer! After that it’s usually fairly early to bed knowing that I’ve got another packed day starting early next morning – it may be tiring but at least I never get bored!

I know there is a length of flooring in our living room that has needed fitting for years but I also know I’m not going to fit it this week or probably ever. Doors that hang wonky? Tiles that line up along the wall like they were drunk? We’ve got them too. Truth to tell most of us aren’t safe to be let loose with a hammer and nails so it makes sense to get on the blower to someone who actually knows what they are talking about. Out & About The shortness of the days in winter means that I can only go walking at the weekends - by the time I have shut up the shop it’s usually dark. But with the arrival of spring and summer the longer evenings mean that I can get out into open countryside for a couple of hours after work and that makes this is a great time of year for reestablishing fitness and testing out new gear. I learned in the army that even the very best equipment improves with use and at this time of year that I like to treat myself to new boots or walking trousers, knowing that by the time I start my serious walking in the summer they will be properly broken in and really comfortable. So this issue I thought I would suggest a short walk that is suitable for beginners and experienced walkers alike, and which works well as either a light weekend stroll or a brisk evening walk according to your preference.

At the end turn left then right and follow the path down to Bradley Woods. It’s a great time of year to be in the woods with lots of bird and animal activity so take your time in this section. proprietor of Grid To Mag of Grimsby Road the area’s leading stockist of top quality outdoor gear across but you want to end up on the southern side of the wood where a signboard points across the fields towards Barnoldby Le Beck. This path offers fine views across to the Wolds in the West and Bradley Gairs in the East and at some times of year can offer the unexpected pleasure of the sight of a field filled with sunflowers as the image accompanying this piece shows. When you reach St Helen’s church at Barnoldby take time for a break near the memorial to huntsman William Smith who died near here in 1845 and admire one of the most beautiful churchyards in Lincolnshire. Then head for the main road and turn right. After about 300 yards a path will be signposted back towards Grimsby. This path leads through plantations and then diagonally across the fields (just follow the direction of the signboard), over a small bridge and up to the east side of Laceby Manor golf course. Walk between the course and the driving range, through the farmyard, then turn right and then left and you will be on the path back to the Laceby bypass. You have a choice at this point and you can either carry on up this path, past the Manor to the main road, or branch off right and rejoin the main path near Bradley Woods. I hope you enjoy it - next time we’ll look at some of the finest fishing the area has to offer - till then keep well and keep walking!

Your Time Well Spent—New Exhibitions for Spring

with Tracey Smith

There has been something of a revival in furnishing our homes with, or giving gifts of items that are hand-made. Previously, time-poor individuals found that they needn’t spend time making something when identikit, mass-produced items could be bought easily and cheaply in High St, UK. However, there’s no doubt that we’re experiencing hard times, and as job losses and cuts continue people are looking for ways to become more self-sufficient, to re-use and recycle and to save, or even make money, and as a result the craft movement is flourishing. So, why is home-made best? Whether it’s been bought or made, hand-crafted items are original and exclusive, and most definitely have an identity. Whether you’ve made it yourself or commissioned something in a certain style or colour, you’ve immediately put your own stamp on it. As more people are rediscovering dormant skills, they are also rediscovering the joy and appreciation that comes with making or receiving hand-crafted items. Whether it’s a painting, a hand-thrown pot, a cushion or a cake it is guaranteed that the expertise, care and attention to

detail will be reflected in the quality of the product. There’s no place for mediocrity when something has been created from the heart. Crafting has also revived a wonderful sense of community. Crafters and artists love the fact that they can share their work with others at galleries, fairs and festivals and talk about the process involved in the creation of a unique item. In turn, the customer who has made a purchase gains an affinity with the maker, and already the item has a history and a personality. The art and craft community in the Lincolnshire area is vibrant. There are ‘knit and natter’ type groups, such as those run by A Good Yarn in Cleethorpes and as well as reviving the art of conversation and making friends, these are also vital for sharing skills that may otherwise have been lost. So next time you want something new for your home, consider the true value of home-made. Think about buying a unique item that will give pleasure for years; or why not dig out your woodworking tools, knitting needles or paint brushes and have a go yourself?
