for your home and garden?

Local firm leads the way in battle against opportunistic crime According to the police most thefts are carried out not by professional thieves or master criminals but by opportunists. We’re all familiar with the standard lists of precautions we can take to stop ourselves becoming victims of this kind of crime but a new approach, devised by a local firm, Privatect, of Wilton Road looks as though it might prove to be a game changer - putting householders firmly back in charge of keeping their property secure. The Privatect system involves the fitting of security screens to existing wrought iron gates and fences, depriving would be thieves of the chance to spy out the lie of land and also keeping your possessions away from prying eyes. Not only that but they look great too and they stop leaves and litter from blowing into your garden from the street! Privatect gate panels are available in Perspex or Polycarbonate and in a wide range of colour tints and opacities so you can customise your installation to perfectly match your property. They can

even customise your screen panel with a printed or decorated design to enhance its appearance or even to advertise your business - and all for the single standard price of £12.50 per square foot. Owing to their ingenious fastening system Privatect can fit panels to your gates without the need for any drilling or modification of the existing ironwork and the panels are all extremely durable so they will help your property look good and stay safe for years to come. So if you want to make your home more secure get in touch with Privatect today it’s a decision you won’t regret!

Are you a keen internet user anxiously waiting for the leap in speed and performance that super fast internet will bring? If so the NELC could do with your help! The council has received approval from the government to enter into talks aimed at finding a partner with whom to develop local superfast broadband links but in order to do so they need 5000 local individuals and 500 businesses across the region to complete a demand survey. The proposed new system would mean that 90% of local subscribers could obtain speeds of 24mb/s by 2015 - great for home users and for businesses alike. Time To Get Britain’s Kids Off The Sofa !

Well if you feel that way a new website launched by The National Trust should be right up your street. Titled Fifty Things To Do Before You’re 11¾ the site reads like a treasury of memories of childhoods past. Activities suggested are mostly very cheap or even free and include climbing trees, playing conkers, collecting frog spawn, snail racing, blackberrying and damming streams. You can visit the site at www.50things. org.uk - it’s packed with advice and safety tips and there are tracking tools to help each child keep track of their progress towards the magic fifty mark.

Do you ever think that today’s kids miss out on a lot of fun because they’re too busy with their X Boxes and Play Stations? Or maybe that they don’t get enough opportunities to take a few controlled risks and learn a little independence in the process?

Earthwood project a big hit in local schools

Local artists Tim Michael and Sime Naylor have produced Earthwood, (Gone Fishin’) a beautifully illustrated story for children that tells the tale of Argil and Red the squirrel, who has eaten too much! Sime originally wrote the story for his own children but re-invented it to become the first of what he and Tim hope will be a series of stories. The story has been well received by young audiences in schools and bookshops. Sime and Tim have been instrumental in setting up Moonfruit Stories as part of the Moonfruit Cooperative and are currently approaching schools, libraries and children’s centres in the area with a view to using Earthwood as part of creative and interactive workshops. For information email moonfruitcreative@ hotmail.co.uk Earthwood is available in the Grimsby branch of Waterstones’ for £4.99 or from www.amazon.co.uk

Crafty Ideas with Tracey Smith

For most people it can take a lot of time and practice to acquire the competence to produce high quality handmade items, but becoming accomplished in one’s craft is only the tip of the iceberg and one of the most important skills one can develop is that of sourcing good quality materials. There are many artisans, myself included, who lean towards eco-crafting, reusing what they have to hand and recycling where possible but it is still the case that most products will require some supplementary materials to be purchased and these items have to be shopped for very carefully, especially if one is intending to create items which are strong, durable and of the highest quality. Undoubtedly the best method, especially for newcomers to the crafting scene, is to find a specialist shop which carries a good range of quality materials, where the proprietors are knowledgeable and where they are willing to take the time to give advice. In forging relationships with

Tracey Smith of Purely Fabrication at a craft fair (above) and (below) one of the handmade cushions available from her website

local businesses in this way, one can often gather information not readily available when buying via mail order. Good quality items don’t necessarily have to be expensive, and it’s important, especially in the current climate, to shop around to find the best price, but although the internet suppliers often look cheapest one will frequently find their sales require the purchase of fixed quantities, whereas a local supplier will often supply the exact amount needed. As a fabric artist, I have built strong relationships with several local suppliers who will, for example, allow me to buy just 10cm of fabric which would only be sold by the metre on the internet, simply because they know I’m a returning customer. Of course there are times when internet shopping is the only option but as you develop your skills and learn what materials work best in your creations, you soon find that it really is a poor second to being able to handle the materials, gain insight into possible alternatives and communicate face to face with someone who knows about their product and your needs. So the most important skill to develop for sourcing good quality materials is that of communication, through networking and word of mouth. Engage with suppliers and with other makers, go to fairs, galleries and local outlets and share ideas with fellow artisans. As well as extending your circle of friends, you’ll gain valuable knowledge of where to buy the quality of product to be able to maximise your potential and reputation. Tracey Smith’s website can be found at www. purelyfabrication.co.uk

A Good Yarn

Since opening in Cambridge Street, Cleethorpes, Kate Roberts has made her shop into a hub for both beginners and experienced knitters. With its welcoming atmosphere it provides the perfect setting to gather for a chat during classes and drop in sessions. On Tuesday afternoons, Friday mornings and Saturday afternoons there are workshops for knitting and crochet and on the first Saturday of each month the crochet club meets and a qualified tutor will teach to both novices and experienced crocheters. Another monthly workshop offers a programme which includes beading, freeform, finishing techniques, lacemaking, knitting and crochet. The shop has a wide range of materials to cater for the needs of knitters and crocheters alike, including yarns, wools and haberdashery, needles, books and patterns, with prices to suit all pockets. Kate’s passion for her craft is deep rooted and you can tell from a few minutes conversation with her just how dedicated she is to this pastime and how much she enjoys bringing it back to life in this little gem of a shop. Workshops fill up quickly so call Kate on 01472 508787 to book a place or visit www.agoodyarn.co.uk

Gardens

It’s a great time of year to be a gardener - especially if you’ve got ......

this year) the extra burst of sunlight and heat will really kickstart the garden into life. With the frost risk over we can move tender seedlings of tomatoes, beans, courgettes, aubergines and peppers outdoors and with any luck the first summer salad crops should be ready for harvesting - early potatoes and peas too. The most important job at this time of year is weeding - it’s perfect growing weather and they are going to come through thick and fast - if you don’t stay on top of them then you’re doomed. In the vegetable garden this is time for sowing cauliflowers, beetroot, carrots and turnips and also more exotic veg like chicory, endive and kohlrabi. For flower gardeners it’s time to plant out annual bedding and to get those stored tubers of dahlia and canna out of winter storage and into the ground. There’s still time to plant a few hardy annuals too and to thin out the sowings from earlier in the year - but the most important thing to do in the garden in June is to enjoy it - so take some time out to just relax and make the most of one of the best gardening months there is!

Green Fingers

June is a great time to be a gardener - especially now we’ve had some decent rain and the threat of drought has passed for a while at least. The days should be warm and the nights too and with the longest day approaching (it’s June 21st

He is a very reliable, hard working and polite man. When he has finished he clears all the rubbish away and takes it to be disposed of. The garden looks a picture. Fabulous Freestyle! Amanda Stringer of A&M’s Dance Academy offers an introduction to the colourful world of Freestyle Dance Until the late 1970’s if you went to a dance school you probably learned ballet, a little ballroom, perhaps some classical dance. Nothing in the curriculum had changed that much in a long time. Then Freestyle dance burst onto the scene and everything had changed! All of a sudden dance was cool again - disco was king and films such as Saturday Night Fever meant everyone wanted to learn. Dance teachers took up on the craze and brought it in to their dance schools realising that the

basic step patterns of disco were ones which had in fact been danced for years but had been re-energised by using co-ordinating arm, hand, leg, foot and body actions. Over the years this dance style has developed into what it is today, a fast, high impact gymnastic style routine using high kicks, travelling spins, runs, jumps and tricks. Competitive freestyle dance is a huge sport today with thousands of dancers competing every weekend all over the country. British dancers travel regularly - even as far as Ireland, South Africa and Norway. Dancers start as beginners, wearing very basic plain dancewear and light makeup. There is a system in which the dancers must lose 3 lives in order the move up into the next section which is starters, followed by intermediates, champs and premiere champs. To lose a life you must win at a competition where there are more than 7 dancers in that section. The costumes and make up become more elaborate as you move up the ranks with fully diamanté stoned costumes and hair extensions, eyelashes, false nails and fake tans for the over 10’s.

A&M’s Dance Academy in Grimsby boasts over 100 competitors, many with championship titles. They were founded in April 2006 by friends Amanda Stringer and Marian Lilley. Their dance school has grown bigger and better with the help of their dedicated team of teachers, helping dancers to achieve many successful results at competitions and encouraging dancers to further their love for the sport by becoming dance teachers themselves or moving on to dance colleges. Many fitness benefits are to be gained from this sport. Dancers require huge amounts of stamina having to dance at this high impact level at 1 minute bursts is similar to an athlete doing a 200 metre sprint. Sometimes they may not have long in between rounds to recover which is why dancers need lots of training to sustain this energy. Freestyle dancers also need to have lots of flexibility and they train very hard in this department too therefore developing into strong and agile individuals. Aside from the fitness benefits this sport also sees young children grow into confident Amanda Stringer and sociable people helping with is co founder and confidence issues in other areas and proprietor of A&M’s helping them achieve personal targets. Dance Academy - www. All in all Freestyle Dance is fun, freedomfreestyledance. exciting and offers many health and co.uk social benefits - a great hobby for any child and one which continues to go from strength to strength.

A full menu is on display and the choice is fantastic, from smaller bites to larger meals there is something for everyone, and the prices are very competitive. This place really is a little gem and can be found in Osborne Street, Cleethorpes. So don’t take our word for it, go and see for yourself - you’ll be glad you did.

Wellness 19 Are You A Victim Of The Allergy Myth ?

Nuts and seafood are among the most common and most potentially serious of food allergies

There’s no doubt that having an allergic reaction to something can be very inconvenient and unpleasant and sometimes it can be very dangerous indeed. It is also true that allergies seem to be on the rise, possibly as a result of changes in our lifestyles and diets. But research suggests that many people wrongly believe they have allergies and cause themselves a lot of unnecessary inconvenience because of them. In many cases it will simply be an intolerance to a particular food (an intolerance is not just a mild allergy - an allergy involves a reaction in the body’s immune system,

When you need top quality services .....

Who Ya Gonna Call? It happens when you’re least expecting it and always at the most inconvenient time. The car won’t start, or water comes dripping through the ceiling or the lights all go out. We’ve all experienced small disasters like these and then we have to ring around our friends and relatives to see if any of them has a number for a mechanic or a plumber or an electrician or whatever other trade is needed. It’s depressing and it’s often expensive and it’s stressful. How much better would it be if we had all that information ready and to hand just when it was needed? So what we suggest is this – in this section of the magazine you’ll find the numbers of all sorts of top quality service providers – grab a pen and make a note of them somewhere convenient so that if you ever need a job doing properly and in a hurry and at a reasonable price then you’ve got the number to hand ready. Much easier – and the businesses listed here know that customer service is what counts – they’ll sort out the problem and save you from hassle. So who ya gonna call? Stressbusters!

People 29

A Day In The Life of Darren and Jenny Kenyon of Fastline Shellfish Early mornings are the norm in the Kenyon household – if you don’t like getting up while it’s still dark then you really shouldn’t be thinking about working in the fishing industry. Fastline is a complex business with three distinct parts; the fishing side which is run by Darren on his boat Sweetwaters, and the factory and shop which are Jenny’s department. To get all these parts to mesh and run successfully together can be quite a task but they make a good team and the business which they began four years ago has expanded rapidly. Fastline catch, process and sell lobsters, crabs and whelks to the restaurant trade, wholesalers, fishmongers and also to the general public from their premises on the North Wall – all freshly caught by Darren. Darren’s routine is partly dictated by the tides - not so long ago that would have been true of a lot of people in the town but nowadays there are fairly few who actually go to sea. The Sweetwaters is a former trawler, 10 metres long and adapted for crabbing by the removal of her winches and the addition of a shelterdeck. Darren sails every day on the morning tide, penning out if necessary to get an early start on the journey to the fishing grounds. Like all skippers Darren jealously guards the location of his favourite spots – the most he’ll say is that he goes to various places around the Humber mouth and usually sails for two to four hours to reach them, depending on the season – in Winter the crab can be a lot further out. On the way the crew of four get on with cleaning and maintenance jobs and preparing scad to be used as bait. Darren has about 1400 pots out on any given day, strung together in fleets of 40 or 50 each. They need to be hauled up and emptied, rebaited and replaced, then the catch needs to

be graded, undersizers returned to the sea, (there are strict regulations about the minimum sizes of crabs that can be taken), boxed and sent below deck. It’s hard work, especially in bad weather and of course you have to be careful to keep your fingers away from harm – those claws can give a nasty nip. Then it’s on to the next fleet until they’re all done and Darren heads for home. By the time he gets finished he will have put in a 14 hour shift and ten hours later it will be time to start again. Meanwhile, back on dry land, things have been busy in the other parts of the Fastline operation. Jenny and the factory staff arrive at 5am to get things ready and she opens up the shop at 6am. It’s not long before customers start arriving to collect the day’s orders – wholesalers, market stall holders and fish van men come from all over the North of England and the Midlands and they need to be loaded up and on their way as soon as possible. It’s a hectic couple of hours and once the trade vehicles have been dispatched then members of the public start arriving at the shop – there will be a steady stream throughout the day, plenty of them regulars who will stop for a chat. In the factory the previous day’s catch is being prepared. Some lobsters and crabs are set aside for live sales – a growing part of the business and especially popular with the restaurant trade – the rest are boiled and graded.

Above: The Sweetwaters returning after a successful day’s crabbing

The very best will be kept whole – others will be dressed which involves removing the brown meat from the shell and cracking of the claws to get at the white. The meat is then returned to the crab shell, white meat on top of course. In the shop Jenny will switch between serving customers and fielding phone calls with orders for the next few days. It’s a good time for her to get busy with preparing the orders for restaurants. Some like to collect but others prefer deliveries and she will need to arrange specialist chilled transport to make sure that the product arrives in perfect condition. She’s usually finished around 1pm and shuts up shop at 2pm. So do they enjoy it? They both say yes and although they admit to being exhausted at the end of the day they’re both adamant that they wouldn’t want to change. ‘Having good staff makes a big difference’ says Jenny, ‘You couldn’t run a business like this without people you can trust and rely on’ and Darren pays tribute to his wife, ‘Jenny is the heart of the business – she’s the organised one who keeps everything going smoothly, liaises with the customers, sorts out problems.’ What’s actually clear is that at the heart of this local business is a strong and committed team which is why Fastline Shellfish looks set to keep going from strength to strength.
