Carnival Parade 2013
It looked for a while like it might not happen but the good news is that Saturday July 20th sees the ever popular Cleethorpes Community Carnival parade wend its way through the streets of the resort once again. It’s the time of year when clowns appear on street corners, unicycles roam and wigs and costumes of every size, colour and shape from cowboys to animals, space creatures to fish are the order of the day. There’s plenty of loud music, fun, laughter and general mayhem it’s the best day out in the area! Last year we really thought that the carnival was over as the organisers found that in these hard up times it was getting more and more difficult to find funding so we all said goodbye to this much loved event that had been brightening up the resort since 1976. The parade’s salvation has been thanks to one of the area’s

Many of the old favourites will be with us again - majorettes, dancing groups, many local charities, organisations and businesses all volunteers who readily give their time to build floats and help collect for their chosen charity and already many new names are entering floats to give us new fresh faces and new floats to be seen. This year we have the mighty Cumberland Giants, our ever popular pipers and marching bands including East Coast Elite and the Derby Midshipmen and something for all dinosaur lovers T Rex our own baby dinosaur! All the team have been hard at work but it won’t be the same if you’re not there. a community of elderly adults and children there, who are mostly survivors of civil war and HIV epidemics which took away many of the younger adults. Life in Mukunyu can be very hard - very few in this population are well enough or old enough to work in the local tea plantations so just finding shelter, food and clothing is a constant struggle. The diet of the locals is mostly posho which is a maize flour bread, meat or green vegetables are luxuries reserved for holidays and the nearest clean water supply is more than two miles away at a borehole in the forest floor. Even the most basic medicines like paracetemol are beyond the reach of the meagre resources of most people in the community and an education is all but impossible for children who do not have the money to pay school fees. At present Mark and Age Care Development are working to raise £10,000 for the building of a much needed hospital, workshop facility and residential centre for some of the elderly locals and to gather sponsors to help meet the basic needs of some of the most
frail of the local residents. They have about 400kg of clothing and 50kg of pots and pans ready to be shipped across once they have raised enough money to send it and also £2000 to install a water pump to provide the community with fresh drinking water. Helian Keys & Friends - Acoustic Sessions At Waves Fans of acoustic music and would be performers will find a warm welcome on the first Sunday of the month at Waves Bar in Cleethorpes. That’s when local duo Helian Keys, (made up of keyboardist Helen Bennett and vocalist Ian Maver) assisted by many of their friends from the local music scene as well as landlord and performer Lee present their regular Acoustic Folky Jamming Thingummy. It’s a relaxed and friendly gathering where anyone can perform or just listen depending on their preference - a great place for taking the first steps onto the stage or just showing what you can do. Owner Indy Nijjar (who has recently completed a Masters Leadership and Management with Dissertation on The Changing Face of the Tattoo Industry in Contemporary Society) and his team offer a bespoke service to their clients and have produced thousands of exclusive top quality designs. Almost half the clientele we get are first time enthusiasts. Our oldest client to date was 76 and had his first tattoo done with us in memory of his late wife. All That Jazz Returns To Cleethorpes The Jazz Festival returns to the Memorial Hall from June 28th30th bringing top musicians and fantastic sounds including big-hitters such as Alan Barnes, Dave Newton, Claire Martin, Tina May and Jim Mullen will share the stage with Grimsby area favourites Pat McCarthy and Barry Whitfield and there will be a jazz service at St Andrew’s Church and a special feature involving children. Music on offer will veer from Atlantic soul jazz and the big band sounds of Benny Carter to a focus on the French icon Edith Piaf and the sounds of Bill Evans and Art Blakey. There’ll be real ale and food and a record and books stall staged by the Louth based independent shop Off The Beaten Track and a photographic exhibition by Geoff Davis.

Music kicks off on Friday night with guitar-led fare from the Jim Mullen Organ Trio, followed by gypsy jazz from violinist Andy Aitchison with the Pat McCarthy Band and headliners A Tribute to Atlantic Jazz featuring a seven piece with saxes, trumpet, piano, bass and drums. On Saturday the Jazz Heritage Quintet will recall the music of Art Blakey, followed by pianist Gareth Williams and bassist Dave Green and the award winning Wigan Youth Jazz Orchestra. The evening will see vocalist Claire Martin whose influences include Ella Fitzgerald and Shirley Horn, followed by reedsman Alan Barnes and
pianist Dave Newton. To end the night there will be a waft of Parisienne chic as the hits of Piaf are recreated by Tina May. On Sunday an hour-long jazz service at St Andrew’s starts at 9.30am then it’s back at the Memorial Hall for the Barry Whitfield Quartet followed by the bassist Nicola Farnon’s trio, and
an irresistible collaboration of McCarthy, Newton and Green. The Nicola Emmanuelle Quartet open the evening session before the weekend finale arrives in the shape of the Classic Jazz Orchestra led by Ken Mathieson with special guest Alan Barnes. A CD of their music has received rave reviews for its dazzling solos, great ensemble, top arrangements and joyous swing. Tickets for the festival itself are on sale now. Prices are £70 for a weekend pass, with either full day available at £35. Evenings are £22 each and afternoon passes are £18 each. Once upon a time it was much easier to spot when a car’s registration number wasn’t right - you could often tell just by looking. But these days with thousands of personalised numbers on the road the easy link between the year of manufacture and the number on the plate has been broken - which makes life easier for the ringer and harder for you and me. Lauren Ingram found out just how easy it could be to buy a vehicle with a fake ID, when the plate on the VW Golf she was about to purchase turned out to belong to a BMW and the Golf she was buying was an insurance write off. She said, “I can’t believe I nearly spent over £6,000 on a car that shouldn’t have been on the road. I was shocked.” Luckily she got the number checked in time and was able to walk away from the deal. So what can you do to beat the ringers? Well HPI are the leaders in vehicle information and their checks can help you avoid trouble - as they did for Lauren. Of course lots of plate changes are for
legitimate reasons but as HPI’s Nicola Johnson points out it can also be a simple fix for drivers who want to avoid fines for speeding, parking charges or tolls such as the London Congestion Charge. A plate change can also hide the fact it has been involved in an accident and written-off by an insurance company, is currently recorded by the police as being stolen, or is still on finance. You just can’t tell without doing some digging. Many consumers don’t realise that unwittingly buying a vehicle that later turns out to be stolen could see them lose the car and their money, when it’s returned to the rightful owner. Previous plate histories can get very complicated, which is why HPI conducts a thorough investigation into every vehicle it checks,” concludes Johnson. “The HPI Check is designed to do all the research for a customer, flagging up issues such as a plate change, then offering customers the advice they need to take precautionary steps, so they can buy safe in the knowledge they are not throwing their money away.”

New minimum learning periods and curfews on young drivers to cut road deaths? National driving charity Brake are calling for the introduction of minimum learning periods for new drivers and for post-test restrictions such as a zero tolerance drink drive limit and a bar on late night driving and carrying mates. Lessons on motorway driving and driving in dangerous conditions are also proposed. According to Brake these steps would help reduce the number of serious accidents each year which involve young and newly qualified drivers. Traffic is the biggest killer of young people in Britain and young drivers are also involved in a
disproportionately high number of crashes that kill and injure road users of all ages. Young drivers are involved in crashes that result in one in five road deaths and serious injuries - that’s an astonishing 13 serious crashes every day - despite only making up one in eight of drivers! They’re also more likely to crash because a combination of age and inexperience make them more likely to take risks on roads the younger they are, and less able to handle those risks because of a lack of experience.
