Filter Festival Promises To Put Local Authors In The Spotlight Throughout October and early November a new festival of literature will be arriving at venues all around the area. The Filter Festival replaces the former Lit.Com festival in the arts calendar with a promise to offer more focus on regional writers whilst still offering high quality events for all. During Filter, a high number of prominent local writers will be showcased alongside others of national renown and there are lots of opportunities for participation. Writing workshops and an open mic competition, as well as panel discussions, are offered and thereโ€™s plenty for children to join in with too, from the Poetry on the Prom Project to a Play in a Week. Filter promises a series of exciting events for anyone with an interest in the written and spoken word. One of the highlights of the festival will be a one-off visit to Grimsby from Fitzrovia Productions, fresh from the Edinburgh Festival, who will be performing their acclaimed show The Fitzrovia Radio Hour (in the style of 1940s radio plays) to a live audience at Oasis Wintringham Academy on Monday 22 October. Whatโ€™s more the festival has teamed up with Estuary Radioโ€™s Arts and Culture Show so that listeners can switch on and hear interviews with authors, finding out how their ideas are formed and how their books have come about. Another link comes with Cleethorpes Parkway Cinema, which has made the move to screen theatre shows live from the National Theatre in London.

Above - Fitzrovia Productions are at the Oasis Academy on October 22nd Below left to right - Writers George Szirtes, Joe Solo and Phyll Smith who will

Filter will also coincide with the launch of an all-new website, a resource for those interested in writing โ€“ called The Dock (www.thedock.info). The site will feature writing hints and tips, include links to national initiatives and other resources and showcase new writing as well as profile regional writers. One of those being featured on the site is locally based author Kerry Drewery, who has recently secured a three-book deal with publisher Harper Collins. Her first novel of the series A Brighter Fear, is about a fifteen year-old girl Lina living in Bagdad. Charlotte Bowen, festival director said: โ€œThere is a wealth of writing talent in the area and the festival is moving to celebrate those and emerging writers, to give them a spotlight and support their endeavours. Itโ€™s a bumper festival, hosting poetry, crime writing, writing workshops, nationally-acclaimed theatre, open discussions and childrenโ€™s events. We have support from the Arts Council England which has allowed us to bring artists and performers of national renown to the area, making for a high quality festival that ultimately everyone can enjoy.โ€ Full listings for the festival can be found at www. theculturehouse.co.uk Email charlotte@theculturehouse.co.uk for more information

Clee Kids Club

Beaconthorpe Methodist Church, Grimsby Rd ๏€จ 07886 378788 ๏€ช cleeclub@hotmail.co.uk

For working parents it can be hard it is to balance your work hours with collecting the kids from school - but now thereโ€™s a solution to the problem - Clee Kids Club. Based in Beaconthorpe Church on Grimsby Rd and sta๏ฌ€ed by fully qualified and CRB checked carers they can pick your kids up from school and look after them in a safe and happy environment until you collect them. Everyone at the Club is committed to ensuring that the children have a great time with proper old fashioned games, stories and creative activities so they love coming and they have a Parent and Toddler session on Wednesdays from 10 till 12! For further information ring Angela on 07886 378788.

Do you get fed up with seeing kids hooked on TV and games consoles? Maybe itโ€™s time for some ......

Good Old Fashioned Games Do your kids get withdrawal symptoms if theyโ€™re separated from their games consoles for more than half an hour? Do you get choruses of โ€˜Iโ€™m boredโ€™ if you try to wean them off their XBoxes and Nintendos? Sometimes it seems like kids today just donโ€™t know how to have fun anymore. So we did a quick survey round the office to see what games people remember fondly from their childhoods and we came up with a fine list of pastimes but weโ€™re not sure that our kids can play these games - can yours ? First up on our trip down memory lane is chess. There was something very exciting about just getting those pieces out of the box for the first time, learning to set them up in the correct positions and their various moves. Chess teaches patience and strategy and improves memory, concentration and logical thinking. Itโ€™s also one of the

few games where many young children will be able to beat some adults and thatโ€™s always going to be a source of fun. Not for every child of course, some just hated it, but for those that do enjoy it chess was great. Secondly on our list was marbles. What could be simpler or more appealing? Tiny glass balls with coloured centres that cry out to be flicked and clattered against each other, knocked from circles and out of lines. And they all had special names - tiger eyes, puries, aggies and jaspers. Great stuff if a little tough on the knees. The only real downside to marbles was the trouble you could get into if your dad trod on one in his bare feet or if one went up the hoover. If the weather was fine then darts in the garden became an option. No matter how much we promised to be careful we were never allowed to take the

dartboard in the house. Good for hand eye coordination, good for training maths skills (treble 17, double 18, double 14 = 115), great training for the ancient coming of age ritual known as going down the pub for the first time. Which brings us to the good old fashioned playing cards, surely the most versatile games equipment in the world. There are literally hundreds of games that can be played with a deck of cards, ranging from nursery games like Snap and Old Maid to adult games of maddening complexity like Bridge, Bezique and Canasta. And if all that gets too much then thereโ€™s always card houses to build - the world record is a replica of the Venetian Macao Hotel using over 200,000 cards - so thatโ€™ll keep them quiet for a few days. Others on our list included dominoes, poker dice, Meccano and backgammon - but the one thing that everyone agreed was that there was a lot of fun to be had from these simple and relatively inexpensive toys - and that it would be great if we could persuade young people today to put down their games controllers for a little while and enjoy some good old fashioned games!

Best Beware Of

Ransomware! with David J Ellis of DJIT Services

As a computer technician I am often asked to deal with malwares of various kinds which have been allowed to infect computer system. Most people have heard of such things as viruses and trojans and in the last issue I suggested free options for keeping your computer safe but it is essential that any protection is kept up to date because there are always new and ingenious malwares appearing out there and the antivirus companies are constantly updating their databases. Over the past few months I have come across increasing numbers of home computers

which have been infected with a type of malware known as โ€˜ransomwareโ€™ (it is also sometimes referred to as a cryptoviruses or cryptoworms.) They can cause a lot of distress as well as expense to the victim so I thought Iโ€™d use this issue to give you a heads up. Ransomwares are cunning many people who are victims never even realise it - because they are designed to perform a con trick on the computer user. Having entered the system via a system insecurity or a compromised download the ransomware proceeds to encrypt the users personal files, making them inaccessible. Imagine how distressing it would be to boot up and find that you had lost contact with all your documents and photos! Whatโ€™s worse is that the infected computer will display messages that say that the owner needs to download expensive special software to remove the problem. It may also contain threats that the problem is a punishment for downloading pirate files or for illegal material, such as child pornography, being found on a drive.

Pictured above is a screengrab of the shut out screen which may result from a computer being infected with the Metropolitan Police Scam bug.

To make the threat even more convincing personal information from the hard drive may be shown on the screen and a webcam feed may even be displayed. These warnings can look very official and intimidating. The most common one at the moment is the Reveton bug, also known as the โ€œMetropolitan Police Scamโ€ which shows what purports to be a police enforcement notice on screen and prevents the user from accessing their files until a payment is made to a PO Box or via Ukash. If your computer is infected then first of all donโ€™t pay! Take it straight to a repairer and get them to remove the problem - it can be a complicated job and one that requires a professional in most cases.

DJIT Services

It can be a disaster when a computer or laptop crashes or becomes infected with a virus. Vital work, treasured family photos and videos, essential emails can all be lost and you have to lug your machine around town until you find someone who can do the repair. Wouldnโ€™t it be great if the repair came to you? Well now it does! DJIT Services is a mobile one stop computer and laptop repair service - when you have a problem just give Dave a call on 07754 747581 and heโ€™ll be round to sort it out. He can also supply new and used computers and laptops and help with reinstalls and upgrades - so if youโ€™ve got a computer problem then DJIT Services are the answer!

Crafty Ideas with Paul Haynes of Grimsby Sewing & Knitting Paul and Linda took over the Grimsby Sewing And Knitting shop in Freeman Street nearly five years ago and in that time they have expanded their premises, introduced new lines and started running their popular series of hands on lessons and tutorials. They also run Sit & Sew sessions so crafters can get together and enjoy their hobby in the company of other like minded people. Running the shop has shown them the importance of the relationship between crafter and supplier and here Paul talks about what you should look for from a good craft shop.

When we first took over the business we soon realised that a good crafting retailer is not just a shop - itโ€™s a part of peopleโ€™s lives - a place to meet friends, discuss projects and improve skills. Soon our customers became our friends and we thought long and hard about how we could best meet the their needs. We soon figured out that one of the main things people look for in a craft supplier is variety - people like to browse! So we expanded into the premises next door - giving us a much larger space for more exciting ranges of fabrics and accessories catering for lots of different crafting activities. The difference it made was amazing - the shop became a place that people enjoyed visiting just to see what was new - they knew theyโ€™d always find something new and exciting on offer! The next priority was quality - when the browsing is over itโ€™s quality that wins out. We expanded our range to include fabrics by Fat Quarters and Jelly Rolls (weโ€™ll sell in small quantities if theyโ€™re needed). We also

have ranges of top quality wool and sewing and knitting patterns by Butterick, Simplicity, McCalls and Kwiksew. The other thing a shop like ours has to offer is knowledge. Our customers frequently look to us for help and advice in their chosen crafts. Linda and I help out wherever we can but there are limits to our knowledge and it seemed like a good idea to run classes ourselves and to bring experts in to help out where we couldnโ€™t. Our latest class was with Sharon and was a beginners guide to using a sewing machine. Next time they will be making a classic A-Line Skirt from start to finish in a day! We also have beading and embroidery with Sheila and jewellery making with Sally Anne. We also have two ongoing โ€˜Sit โ€˜nโ€™ Sew groups that meet on a Wednesday morning and evening, a great chance to enjoy your craft and meet your friends. We have two โ€˜Brother Open Daysโ€™ coming up one on the 26th October and the 8th December great if you are thinking of a new sewing machine for Christmas โ€“ there will also be an ex demo sale on some of the machines on these days so you can grab a real bargain.

Grimsby Sewing & Knitting

Grimsby Sewing and Knitting certainly know their stu๏ฌ€! Last year they expanded their premises, ensuring that the customers can easily browse, with plenty of space and selection. They are main stockists of Jamone, Brother, Silver and Pfa๏ฌ€ machines. They have an excellent range of haberdashery items, knitting patterns and yarns, an extensive range of dance and stage fabrics, patchwork and quilting fabrics, and lots of quilting accessories. They also o๏ฌ€er a wide range of lessons and skills sessions with experienced tutors. Grimsby Sewing and Knitting also have an eBay shop and are in the process of introducing an online presence. Poetry

from

Wall

Words and images often work well in combination and with this in mind Gill and Elaine from Abbey Walk Gallery and the Driftnet Poets are embarking on a year long project which will result in the publication of a book containing new poems inspired by the exhibitions at the gallery. The Driftnet Poets as writers in residence at the gallery will be working with some of the resident artists and offering activities in the gallery over the life of the residency. It is an exciting and creative opportunity to bring together two mediums in this way and is a venture that celebrates the spirit of collaboration between groups of people working in the arts. The gallery provides a warm welcome to its visitors and the poets are hoping to contribute to that atmosphere and will be delighted to talk to visitors about their writing and how it relates to the work on display. The residency will be officially launched as part of the month long literary event, The Filter Festival, hosted and promoted by The Culture House www. theculturehouse.co.uk At a special launch event on Friday 2nd November the Driftnet Poets will read some of their work. This event will run between 2.00 and 4.00 pm. Tickets can be purchased exclusively at the gallery for ยฃ5.00. The cost includes coffee and cake. Places are strictly limited and so people are advised to book early to avoid disappointment. For further information about Driftnet Poets please email:

The Driftnet Poets live and write in Grimsby, North East Lincolnshire. Established in 2001, over the past decade the group has developed a distinct identity and a following in the region. Each poet has a unique voice and interests and the group provides a supportive forum in which individuals can explore and develop their writing through the critiquing process. In October 2010 Driftnet published its third collection, In Continuum, a range of work which explores landmarks and landscapes of North East Lincolnshire. For some examples of the Driftnettersโ€™ work or to get in touch why not visit their blog at driftnetpoets.blogspot.

Train Station, Grimsby Docks No smoking on this platform now where we once dodged through steam that spilled from panting shunting trains at this last stop before the pontoon and the prom. No more excited squeals just the sometime screech of steel from track and wheel and the only moaning you will hear is that of traffic overhead above where we, unwitting, found litter of lonely drinkers and desperate love in shelters rendered redundant by peace. Red admirals court cotoneasters and cabbage whites flirt with buddleia serenaded by blowfly drawn by the draught of fish that haunts this place where cod once left for London and for Leeds and trippers returned to Bradford and beyond.

Gordon Wilson Cinder Track An expanse of green sea Where each gust of Mexican wave Sends lapping husks Busily sweeping the lane And the grand old ancient: Our tree, Stands like a gnarled Knut Complete with rope-swing ponytail. Above him Heavens threaten In mauve, cobalt, steel And no matter how high we climbed We could never reach Godโ€™s Fingers.

A time to celebrate back where it all started -

Richard Markhamโ€™s 60th Birthday Concert Q: Why have you chosen to give your 60th birthday concert in Grimsby? A: Thatโ€™s easily answered! At times such as landmark birthdays itโ€™s inevitable that you think about your roots โ€“ maybe youโ€™re scared of looking forward! โ€“ and at 60 youโ€™re much nearer the end of your career than the beginning so itโ€™s a suitable opportunity to celebrate where it all started and, thankfully, with some of the people around you who helped to make that happen. Q: How did you stay in touch with the musical life of Grimsby once you had started to study in London? A: It wasnโ€™t really possible at first but it wasnโ€™t long before I was invited to give concerts on a professional basis in the area by Roy Kemp and others and when Roy was promoting his Country House Recitals I was one of the young performers whose careers he wished to encourage. I was often invited to give recitals for Wintringham Society of Arts, which later became Grimsby Concert Society, and also to perform piano concertos with the Youth Orchestra and the GSO. Lately I have been involved more directly with the Central Hall, ever since they bought a new piano, and inaugurated the biennial Choral Gala Concerts which have been a great success. Q: You have enjoyed a very varied career - what are the highlights? A: There are so many itโ€™s hard to choose. At 20 I entered the Geneva International Competition and won the Bronze Medal - that was very exciting. The Countess of Munster Musical Trust, chose

me, along with Raphael Wallfisch and Felicity Lott, to appear as soloists with the English Chamber Orchestra (conducted by Raymond Leppard) at the Queen Elizabeth Hall. I was a finalist in the BBC Piano Competition and that led to Radio 3 broadcasts and subsequent appearances as soloist with all the major London orchestras at Victor Hochhauserโ€™s concerts at the Royal Albert Hall, Royal Festival Hall and the Barbican. And I have had the chance to play with many great musicians. I formed a duo with the cellist Raphael Wallfisch when we were students and we played together for 12 years. I played with both the Medici and the Coull String Quartets and on one occasion partnered Paul Tortelier, the French cellist . Then I was the pianist in the Burlington Piano Trio. And of course in 1977 I formed a piano duo with David Nettles which continues to go from strength to strength. We have never accepted that the two piano recital, once a very popular event in the UK was a thing of the past. Q: Finally, what will be your feelings when you climb up those steps to the Central Hall platform? A: I shall be nervous. People are often surprised about that, but nerves are somewhat essential to a good performance, and experience just helps to conquer them rather than eliminate them. However I am looking forward to it, and the warm atmosphere and acoustic of the hall will, Iโ€™m sure, make it feel just like โ€œcoming homeโ€! Q: Thank you very much and have a great birthday concert.

Richard Markham, international concert pianist, whose 60th Birthday Concert t00k place in September. He will be back at the Central hall in November with the Grimsby Symphony Orchestra.

International concert pianist Richard Markham was born in Grimsby and attended Wintringham School. His father worked in education, his mother was a freelance writer. He learned piano with Shirley Kemp and also played the viola with the GCDYO and Grimsby Symphony Orchestra.

His music has taken him all around the world both as a solo artist and as part of a renowned piano duo with David Nettle. This year he is back in Grimsby twice - in September for his 60th Birthday Concert and in November with the Grimsby Symphony Orchestra. We spoke to Richard backstage and asked him what itโ€™s like to be back in his home town.

Services Directory Choosing a new bed is a big decision - here Marcie from Cleethorpes Bed Shop offers some advice on how to get .....

A Good Nightโ€™s Sleep

A comfy mattress can make a world of difference not just to your sleep patterns but to your whole life. If you sleep well and wake refreshed then you will be a happier person - simple as that - and the main factor is deciding whether or not you sleep well is

often the suitability and condition of your mattress. Mattresses should be changed every 5-10 years - buy the best you can afford - a budget mattress may be a false economy. What kind of mattress to buy is a matter of personal preference. Some people prefer soft others

prefer firm. There are two main types available - memory foam and pocket sprung. Memory foam, which is heat sensitive and moulds to your shape is the latest innovation in mattress manufacture. Different types of memory foam mattresses are available including standard and orthopaedic and they may have pocket springs or be springless. Memory foam mattresses do not need turning as the memory foam sits on the top. My advice when buying memory foam is that there needs to be at least 2ins of foam - anything less is just a comfort layer. A temperature sensitive cover helps with overheating but some manufacturers are developing cool memory foam which eliminates this problem. Memory foam mattresses are particularly recommended for anyone suffering medical problems. Many people still prefer pocket

Left: Guest columnist Marcie, proprietor of Cleethorpes Bed Shop

springing in which springs are encapsulated in individual cotton pockets giving excellent support. Pocket springing is far superior to old fashioned cage springing or continuous springing - with these old fashioned mattresses when one person gets in or out of bed the whole bed shifts, with pocket springs you use only the springs you need. Mattresses have a spring count number - the higher the spring count the better the support. They usually start at 800 and go up to a possible 2000. Higher spring counts can be more expensive but which is right for you will depend on a personal preference. I hope when you change your mattress you find these tips helpful. Good luck and have a great nightโ€™s sleep.

A Day In The Life

Markโ€™s 100x100 Challenge Mukunyu Parish is an area of western Uganda close to the border with the Congo. The area has suffered as a result of the wars which haver raged through East Africa over the past twenty years and also from the effects of HIV/Aids.

with Mark Howarth of GardenAid

Left: Villagers in Mukunyu Parish, Western Uganda Below: Mark Howarth of GardenAid A large proportion of the people who live in Mukunyu are elderly - the war and illness have left a shortage of adults to act as breadwinners in the local economy. The Parish desperately need ยฃ10,000 to build a medical centre. There is a shortage of all medicines - even paracetemol can cost too much for the people there to afford! I would like to find 100 business prepared to donate ยฃ100 each to help me make the hospital dream into reality. If youโ€™d like to help then give me a call on 07742 638423 - itโ€™s a great chance to make a real difference!

I aim to be out of the house by 8am - we have clients all over the county, as far afield as Horncastle, and I like to be on site and working by nine. I pick up my colleague Michael en route. A lot of what we do is residential but we also have some commercial clients. Iโ€™ve been working in horticulture for over forty years, first on farms, then for the council, now for myself. I donโ€™t think I could ever stand working in an office. I like to be outdoors whatever the weather. However cold or miserable it gets I always enjoy my job. Thereโ€™s always lots of variety in the contracts we get - from reclamations where a garden has become completely overgrown to general maintenance. We also do shed and fence building and lawn care. Itโ€™s very rewarding to make a start on what may be not much more than a patch of weeds and see it turn into something beautiful. My favourite is tree work - or arboriculture if weโ€™re being posh. Iโ€™ve always had a good head for heights and was always a climber - my nickname at school was monkey. I do my climbing a lot more safely now though. Iโ€™m a qualified tree surgeon as well as having RHS Horticulture qualifications and a Pesticides Certificate. Over the years weโ€™ve seen a lot of changes in what people want in their gardens. At one time the fashion was mostly for concrete, gravel and decking but now old fashioned cottage flower gardens

are making a comeback and so are vegetables. This year we have been asked to erect several greenhouses and even to dig up lawns and flower beds and replace them with kitchen gardens. Iโ€™m an allotment holder myself so I like to see people growing their own - itโ€™s a lot cheaper and the produce is so fresh and delicious. We finish about 5pm most days. In the evenings I may go down to the allotment but Iโ€™m also a keen member of the Local Business Network - an organisation which meets in the Pink Butterfly. Itโ€™s part of the Round Table movement and itโ€™s a great forum for local business people to get together, make contacts and discuss whatโ€™s going on locally. I spend a lot of time on the phone because thatโ€™s how I keep in touch with my fiancรฉe Betty. We met over the internet ten years ago and three years after that we met face to face for the first time. Sheโ€™s from Uganda and spends six months there and six in Grimsby. Meeting her has really changed my life. Weโ€™re getting married in December in Fort Portal, in western Uganda. It was through Betty that I became involved in raising money for the medical centre in Mukunyu which is her home town and thatโ€™s how the idea of GardenAid was born. I donate ten percent of my income to the health centre project in Mukunyu and Betty and I also collect clothes and other items to be sent out to the village.

Motoring

As fuel prices keep rising ....

Are You Driving Less? Six out of 10 drivers are reducing the journeys they make in their cars because of the rising costs of motoring. In a survey by specialist insurance broker Adrian Flux Insurance Services, 60% of those questioned said they were using their car less than before after being hit hard in the wallet by the escalating price of keeping a car on the road. Figures from the 2010 Department of Transportโ€™s National Travel Survey had already revealed that the average number of trips made per year had fallen to its lowest level since the 1970โ€™s. On average, drivers make 960 trips a year compared to 1,086 in 1997, a fall of 12 per cent, despite the number of households with access to a car increasing by 13 % between 1985 and 2010. Some of the decrease in use of the family car is attributed to internet shopping, removing the need to visit out-of-town shopping centres, but the soaring price of petrol from an average of 78p per litre of unleaded in January 2001 to more than ยฃ1.42 in

2012 has left many motorists stranded. Petrol prices have risen by 38 % since 2007, with diesel up 43% over the same period, while car insurance premiums rose by an average of 16.4% last year. The higher motoring costs have hit customers at a time when consumers are being squeezed by the rising cost of living and static wages. Gerry Bucke, general manager at Flux, said โ€œMotorists are struggling to cope with the impact of high living costs which means they are choosing to make less journeys in order to make ends meet,โ€ he said and shopping around for the best deal on your car insurance is one of the best ways to cut costs.โ€ True enough, but there are other steps that can be taken - the most obvious being to make sure that your car runs as smoothly and economically as possible - so getting a regular service is a basic essential. We think the firms here are among the best youโ€™ll find - so give them a ring, get a service and save money on fuel and repairs You know it makes sense!

Donโ€™t Make Life Easy For Bike Thieves

Bike thefts are on the increase yet the police report that many people are failing to take basic precautionary measures for protecting their property - so here we look at some police advice which could help stop your steed from being stolen. The first step is one which has been around for years - but with a modern twist. Make a note of your bikeโ€™s frame number (itโ€™s stamped underneath the chainstay) and keep it safe. Also note any identifying marks on the bike. Then you might want to put the details on an online bicycle registration service - there are lots to choose from, some free, some paid. Of course these measures wonโ€™t stop your bike from being stolen - but they make it a lot more likely that youโ€™ll get it back! Next invest in the best heavy duty lock you can afford, (better still

get two) but be careful where you use it. D locks are generally the toughest, but flexible locks and chains can be useful in situations where D locks canโ€™t be used for reasons of space. Donโ€™t just lock your bike to some railings or a signpost and never to racks where only one wheel can be fixed, to drainpipes or to posts where the bike can be lifted off - always use the purpose built steel bike racks set in concrete. When locking your bike ensure that the lock goes through the wheel and through the frame ideally use two locks and secure both wheels in this way. Wrapping the lock tightly is a good idea too - if there is lots of room to wiggle and twist the lock then that makes it much easier to break. Fold up bikes can present special problems - because they do not have a strong triangular frame it is

very difficult to lock them securely - best thing to do with a folder is to carry it wherever possible. Get in touch with your local police station and find out if they run any bicycle protection events - most forces will indelibly mark your fram,e and record itโ€™s details in their database. Lastly remember that lots of bikes get stolen from the home - a reliable security system or privacy screens such as those advertised below will help deter opportunistic thefts from domestic premises.

Always lock your bike to purpose built concrete mounted bike stands in a public space.
