Even if fuel prices have taken a sudden plunge (who saw that coming) it still makes sense to keep the food miles as low as possible especially if you live in a county where they make and grow some of the most fantastic food you could ever wish for. At the Grimsby Farmers’ Market you’ll find local producers selling a variety of local products including cheeses, honey, bread, cakes, preserves, ostrich meat, hand reared pork and lamb. Farmers’ markets are held on the third Friday of each month (weather permitting) from 9:00am to 3:00pm.

he Shannon Reilly Trio is one of the area's most admired and talked about acts. Comprised of guitar legend Pat McCarthy and equally renowned bass player Warren Jolly, they're fronted by Shannon Reilly whose crystalline vocals mark her out as something rather special. Singing is in the genes in the Reilly family - her dad is a singer and encouraged her from an early age. She first sang in front of an audience when she was seven but it wasn't until she hit her twenties that Shannon found her jazz voice and it wasn't by a straightforward route. Her friends were involved in the cabaret and burlesque scenes and she wanted to get involved but she couldn't dance. 'I started singing Peggy Lee and Doris Day songs to become part of the scene,' she explains. Shannon has a broad repertoire and is influenced by singers as diverse as Ella Fitzgerald and Cara Emerald. She seems equally at home with classics such as The Nearness of You and more contemporary and funky numbers like Big Bad Handsome Man. The band is always busy and singers need to take care of their greatest asset, the voice. Shannon's tips for taking care of her voice are to soothe it with

I asked her how she managed to balance the two jobs. Jazz songstress Shannon Reilly 'It's tough on weekends,' she talks to Josie Gray about says, 'but I'm hoping the gigs music, style and balancing two take over so I can give up the demanding careers. day job.' She's ambitious but she's also a realist. She loves working on original material with the band and would love to get a record deal but in her own words admits the 'industry is such a hard nut to crack'. She's looking forward to touring in February and says she would settle for a full time singing career if that proves possible. When I ask if she had any advice for women looking to make a career in music she replies modestly. 'I'm not really qualified to give advice as I haven't achieved all my dreams yet but I would say the best thing I ever did was step out of my comfort zone to try something new. Singing pop songs got me nowhere. It's only when I honey and lemon, to avoid eating got into jazz that things started dairy on gig days and to ensure moving for me. TWINKLES FANCY DRESS BRINGS CHILDREN’S CHARACTERS TO LIFE FOR WORLD BOOK DAY

hat’s the busiest time of the year for a fancy dress shop owner? Halloween of course. You guessed that right? So what’s the second busiest? That’s a bit trickier. Christmas? Easter? Nope, it’s World Book Day. I bet you didn’t get that one but it’s an important date in some quarters and nowhere more so than at Twinkles Fancy Dress of Cleethorpes. Twinkles has been in business for fifteen years now, based in old electricity showroom building at the foot of Isaac’s Hill, one of the area’s most beloved buildings. It started out as a retro clothing emporium but proprietor Kath Summers got so many requests to hire her stock for theme nights that she bought some purpose made costumes in and the rest is history. Nowadays she has thousands of outfits, ball gowns and accessories and it’s non stop, not just for her but also for daughter Melanie and grand daughter Tiffany, both of whom assist in the shop. World Book Day is a celebration of authors, illustrators, books and reading marked in over 100 countries all over the world. The main aim of World Book Day is to encourage children to explore the pleasures of books and reading by providing them with the opportunity to have a book of their own. This year will see the 17th World Book Day, and on 5th March 2014 children of all ages will come together to appreciate reading. There’ll be a book token for every school age child and special £1 books that they can buy with them and loads of fun and games on the theme of books and reading. bringing art right into the heart of town
Abbey Walk Gallery opened six years ago and is now firmly established as Grimsby’s premier art venue, hosting an exciting and diverse rolling programme of contemporary art as well as offering studio space and representation to local artists and having a shop which sells a wide variety of top quality artists’ materials. Proprietors Gill and Elaine met while pursuing degrees in fine art and they forged a friendship which led to them
setting up the gallery when they graduated. They are committed to bringing exceptional art to the area and change their exhibitions every six weeks so there is always something new to see. They also run workshops alongside their exhibition programme. Visitors are always welcome and as well as the exhibitions they are also able to visit the resident artists at work in their studios on the premises.
The new year is always a busy time at Abbey Walk Gallery and 2015 promises to be no exception, starting with the arrival of an exciting new touring exhibition The Forest of Possibility. It’s an exploration of that most humble and most essential of media, paper and of its origins in the heart of the forest. The forest is a place of vast potential, where myths and fairy tales are created. Sinister or enchanted, it is a space for the subconscious, a place for both dreams and nightmares. Featuring seven artists This page - The Wheel by James Aldridge Facing page clockwise from top left Enciclopedia3 by Andrea Mastrovito; Empty Room With A Mirror by Stephen Newton; Cell by Stephen Newton; All Is Not Lost by Claire Brewster
from all around the globe, the exhibition invites you to enter a world of extraordinary encounters with the forest, its ancient trees and the animals and

plants that live there. In January the gallery is heading off to the London Contemporary and Modern Art Fair in Islington, London where it will be exhibiting Lincolnshire artists Stephen Newton, Paul Galyer, Linda Ingham and Michael Thacker ARBS. This is the third year that the gallery has exhibited and it is one of only a handful of northern galleries selected.
In February the gallery hosts the Retrospective Exhibition of internationally renowned artist Stephen Newton. Spanning nearly three decades this is a major event that groups together significant moments of his remarkable career. Highlighting the full extent of the artist’s work which, has encompassed a diverse range of techniques and ideas it’s a celebration not to be missed.

Love’s Labours Won
This production of Love’s Labour’s Won (also known as “Much Ado About Nothing”) is set in the autumn of 1918 with a world weary Benedick and Claudio returning from the trenches to a house party, where Claudio falls in love with Hero and Benedick reignites his altogether more combative courtship with Beatrice. Youthful passions run riot before peace ultimately breaks out. The action is adorned by a glorious score by Nigel Hess that deftly references music hall, Gilbert and Sullivan, Ivor Novello and Noel Coward. This is, in its entirety, an endeavour that sings: poignant, impassioned and gorgeous. A must see show for all bardophiles.
