In The Know Your indispensable guide to what’s going on where you live “Well, Hello Big Mouth!” A Warm Welcome To Mouth Almighty

C

hristmas is coming, the geese are getting fat and we’d like to introduce our new sister publication, Mouth Almighty, available free gratis and for nothing from January and pickuppable all over town. It’s going to be the home for many of our arts stories and will give us the chance to cover much more of the local creative scene – and that doesn’t just mean painting – it means music, theatre, writing, dance, festivals and entertainments and events of all kinds.

We’re looking for stories to cover, people to interview, stuff to review, but also we’d love to hear from anyone who would like to contribute. If you’re up for it drop us an email to the address on page 5 and we’ll get back to you. And of course, since Mouth Almighty is funded exclusively from advertising revenue we’d love to hear from any local businesses, who think they could benefit from being in the areas liveliest little guide and would like to drop a penny in the old man’s hat. See what we did there?

Submissions Invited For Poetry Advent Calendar

C

alling all poets! Our local writers’ website www.thedock.info is planning a poetry advent calendar to run from November 30th to December 24th, uploading one poem a day as a way of marking the season and offering an alternative to chocolate! Advent is a season of preparation and expectation as the days lengthen and darken and Christmas approaches and it is hoped that a poem a day will give people the opportunity to enjoy the season in a slightly different way and that the poems will be thought provoking and welcome alternative to the frenzy that December can become. Poems should have a seasonal theme but don’t have to be about Christmas directly. They can be in any form or style and up to 40 lines in length. Copyright remains with the poet and poems that have been published elsewhere are welcome. Poems should be sent to the site editor at jogray2@ntlworld.com. The poem should be sent in a word document attachment to arrive no later than Friday 21st November. Poets should also send their full name and age if they are under 18.

t seems like only yesterday, (in fact it was way back in Issue 26) that we visited Shirley and Phil Hodgson at The Vine Cafe in the Ice House but when we heard that they’d moved into new premises in the redesigned Freeman Street Market, (they’re right at the back on the Nelson Street side) we thought it was time to pop down and say hello again and have a cup of tea and some of their delicious cake. Although they’re only open three days a week (Tuesday, Friday and Saturday – same as the market) the new cafe already seems to be going great guns and Shirley and Phil have continued with their winning formula of proper home cooked

meals, favourite puddings and excellent snacks (and don’t forget the cakes) all at extremely reasonable prices. They’re open from 8am with breakfast served until 11 and lunch from 11.30 with a special everyday at £3.50, ranging from Pork Casserole to Lasagne or Fish Pie. All in all it looks like a winning recipe so we’ll be heading down for our dinner and of course some home baked cake. Did we mention the cake?

TRAVEL IN STYLE WITH CLEETHORPES MOBILITY CENTRE

L

et’s be honest, mobility scooters are usually practical and functional but a bit sedate. We never heard one described as exciting and stylish before. So when our friends Sophie

and Jo at Cleethorpes Mobility Centre told us about the newest addition to their range – the Drive Easyrider we thought we had to go and take a look. With a top speed of 8mph it’s a lot

nippier than most scooters on the market and it looks great with its jet black fairings, chrome style mirrors and handlebars straight out of Sons Of Anarchy. This is the scooter for anybody that likes the wind on their face and the sun on their backs and a thousand miles of open road ahead of them. Well maybe not the last bit. But they do look like a lot of fun and we think Sophie and Jo are onto a winner. They haven’t started selling lids and leathers to go with them yet but we think these new scooters will have people getting their motors running and getting out on the highway in next to no time because all of us were born to be wild sometimes. Cleethorpes Mobility Centre are at 11-13 High Street, Cleethorpes DN35 8LA. You can contact them by phone at 01472 600055 and www.cleethorpesmobility.com on the web

CHRISTMAS PEOPLE

Top: Ian Burrett and Freeda at The Discovery Centre Middle: Running repairs for Freeda’s nose at the Carnival

CHRISTMAS PEOPLE

13

“It’s all about self belief. If you believe in yourself then you’re half way there.” The Peoples meets Ian Burrett scooter enthusiast, fundraiser and author

I

an Burrett is a man who likes to have a lot going on. He’s a trailer fitter at Schenker in Immingham by day but he’s also the founder of the Cleethorpes Scooter Club, a tireless worker for charity, and now an author, with his first book for children - Santa And The Dragon-Deer available now (just in time for Christmas!). He’s at the Discovery Centre when we meet, surrounded by inflatable Santas, knitted elves and of course Freeda, his trusty steed for twelve years now, a custom built scooter, based on a 1961 Lambretta, but transformed into a red nosed dragon with the head up by the handlebars and the body forming the frame. Ian and Freeda are a familiar sight in our area from their regular appearances in the Cleethorpes Carnival (they’ve done twelve) and other charity events. Although Ian attends the parade dressed as an out of season Santa he also likes to make an appearance as a mediaeval knight on St George’s Day. Last year he was knighted by his friend Susan Priestley who was dressed as a queen in full regalia at the time. It certainly took the rest of the crowd in the Number One by surprise. So how did he meet up with Freeda? “I was already a scooter enthusiast when the chance to buy Freeda came up. She’d been built in Essex by three enthusiasts and when I saw her I thought she looked like a lot of fun. My grand daughter Poppi-Mai had been diagnosed with cystic fibrosis and I decided to use Freeda to raise money for research into the condition. I’ve raised several thousand pounds in the years since then.”

And now he’s turned his hand to writing children’s stories? How’s that going? “It’s going really well. My first book is out now. It’s called Santa And The Dragon-Deer. I got the idea last January, spent several weeks writing the story and then persuaded Gary Jamieson (better known as Arty Gaz) to do the illustrations.” “I sent a copy to Kensington Palace for Prince George and received a very nice letter in return and we’ve had sales all over the world – to Norway, Sweden, Australia, Spain. We’re even sending six copies to Christmas Island!” The book tells the story of what happens when man flu lays Santa’s reindeer low a week before Christmas and the only creature who can possibly help out and save the day is an unwilling and rather scruffy dragon. Can he be got ready in time? It’s touch and go but to find out more you’ll have to buy the book or go along to one of Ian’s readings. Ian and Freeda will be appearing Tescos Cleethorpes on November 21st and he’s doubling up on November 30th with visits to Lucarli’s Club in the morning and The Spider’s Web from 3pm. He’ll also be at Water’s Edge, Barton on December 14th. Wherever you see him we’re sure you’ll have a thoroughly entertaining time and maybe come out with a Christmas present or two for the younger members of the family, and for the young at heart! You can also buy Ian’s book from Sheen’s Florist in Pelham Road, Immingham or contact him on santa.dragondeer@hotmail.com or by phone on 0782 8028759.

The message of the book? Always believe in Christmas!

KID’S STUFF Do you get fed up with the same old trimmings year in year out? Why not do things differently this year and ....

Build Your Own Christmas Tree!

A

nd why would we want to do that we hear you ask. Well now. Because it’s much more fun than the same old same old, because it’s cheaper and because the whole family can join in the making and decorating, the kids will love it and they can learn loads off new craft skills in the process. What’s more you can have a new tree every year, each completely unique to you and your home! What more reason do you need? A quick search of the internet will give

you loads of ideas but among our favourites are trees painted onto the wall, trees made from string wrapped between nails in a board and trees constructed from driftwood or twigs. We even found trees made from origami, stacks of books or beer bottles (not child safe), biscuits and even a tree made from a decorated set of step ladders! So if you’ve got the time why not give it a go and remember to send us a picture of your efforts, we’d love to see them. Happy arborifaction and have fun!

GARDENS for winter interest, indoors and out, you can’t go wrong with

Hellebores

T

he winter months can be a dull time in the garden with not much growing and precious little to take your eye in the borders. Of course there’s always tidying up to be done if you feel up it but we still like to have something to gladden out hearts as we’re toiling away. That’s where hellebores come into their own. They’re perfect for shady areas and will tolerate just about any weather. Their elegant flowers can often be seen poking up through the snow and their deep green foliage brings some much needed variety to the winter garden.

Hellebores are fully hardy, easy to grow in almost any soil and there are many varieties to choose from in colours ranging from deep purple through green to creamy white. In dry weather they will benefit from mulching and an extra spot of watering. In recent years they have also become popular as indoor plants thriving in bright rooms with indirect sun and plenty of humidity. If your house is dry a saucer of damp gravel beneath the pot will work wonders. So if you’re looking for something to brighten your home or garden this winter, why not give hellebores a try?

Road tax exemptions, cheap insurance, a sound investment and loads of fun. Just some of the reasons why ....

there’s never been a better time to own a classic car!

W

ell now, for the last few years times have been tough and we’ve all had to tighten our belts but according to the posh papers the economy is on the turn and one result of that is an upsurge of activity and interest in the historic vehicles market. According to Graham Chapman, our local classic car guru, it’s the result of a combination of factors, not least the fact that, with interest rates at historic lows, investors are keen to move their money away from banks and building societies. “People are looking at classic cars as a way of getting a better return on their money and having a lot of fun at the same time” he explains. “There’s not many investments that you can enjoy as much as a great car.” So why are classic cars such a good investment right now? The first thing to consider is the road tax situation. Since 1993 any car made before 1973 has been deemed by the DVLA to be a historic vehicle and exempt from road tax. That cut off date never altered however but recent changes to the law mean that now the date rolls over each year so that any car reaching its fortieth birthday is tax exempt.

CLASSIC CARS

Insurance companies are already reporting a steep increase in the number of classic cars being brought out of storage and put back on the road and the new rule means that 1970s favourites like the Ford Escort Mk1 and early Allegros and Reliant Robins fall within the exemption category. Many of these stylish motors can be picked up for a song – and if your pockets are a little deeper then there are plenty of Jaguars and Mercedes SRs around at affordable prices. The second factor driving the classic car boom is the low insurance costs. A historic

vehicle that is driven for about 3,000 miles a year will frequently cost less than £100 to insure and there are plenty of specialist companies out there competing so you can save by shopping around! So classic vehicles are a great investment that you can enjoy – that sounds pretty good. But how do you go about joining the classic car community? That’s where a firm like Graham Chapman’s can help. Talk to them, let them know your budget and the kind of car you’re looking for and they can use their contacts and expertise to locate the car of your dreams, carry out an inspection and carry out restoration work as necessary. If you’re a DIY enthusiast they can agree a schedule with you so that you share the work. After that so long as the vehicle is maintained and kept under cover during the winter months it should keep giving you pleasure for years to come (or at least until you decide to upgrade to something even more fun). Happy driving!

Winter’s On The Way Is Your Vehicle Ready For The Cold Snap?

t’s been threatening for a while but now it looks like the bad weather is about to arrive with a vengeance, so it’s a good plan to get your car down to a trustworthy mechanic for a good service and check over before it begins. Get them to check the oil level, anti-freeze, hazard lights and tyres for tread depth and pressure – and check the spare tyre is in good condition too and when you’re travelling remember to be ready for any eventuality by following a few basic suggestions. • Keep the essentials in your car, such as a torch, reflective triangle sign, high-visibility jacket, first aid kit, and jump leads. • Plan your journey and don’t make unnecessary journeys in poor weather conditions. • Allow extra stopping distance from the vehicle in front.

Take particular care to look out for pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists. In cold or icy conditions, drive carefully and ensure you don’t accelerate, brake or take sharp corners suddenly. Wear or stow essential winter clothing in case you have to leave your vehicle in the event of a breakdown. If you’re heading out on a long journey carry a supply of drinks and snacks in your car just in case the weather turns and you end up stuck.
