In The Know Your indispensable guide to what’s going on where you live

TIME TO NOMINATE YOUR NHS STARS

H

ave you had a good experience from your local NHS? Would you like to thank a particular member of staff or even a whole team who did their best to look after you? Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust is seeking nominations for the ‘Patient’s Choice’ award category at its annual staff awards ceremony, Our Stars 2017. At the event, staff who go above and beyond for their patients will be recognised and celebrated. The most coveted award on the night is the one chosen by patients and the public. Simon Dunn, people and organisational development lead, explains: “Each year we hold a special event to celebrate those staff members who add that extra sparkle to our patients’ experience with us. Whether it was someone clinical who provided you with exceptional care or another member of our team who contributed to making your visit a positive one, we want to hear from you.” “We’re inviting nominations from patients and their loved ones for the Patient’s Choice award so we can recognise those individuals and teams

who have made a real difference to patients and their families. “So whether it was a nurse, doctor, cleaner, therapist, consultant, volunteer, porter, receptionist, catering staff member, or someone else, if a member of our team has made a difference to you this is your chance to say ‘thank you’.” Last year’s winner was the whole team on ward C1 Holles at Grimsby hospital. Members of the team are pictured above, receiving the award. The patient who nominated them said: “My mother received excellent care at the end of her life on C1 Holles ward. As a nurse with over 40 years’ experience and having spent over 12 hours a day with my mother for the two week period she was receiving care in the hospital, I

am well placed to observe and show appreciation for such outstanding care. It really was some of the best nursing care I have seen.” If you have been a patient or visitor at Scunthorpe, Grimsby or Goole hospitals you can nominate a staff member, clinical or non-clinical, in one of the following ways: Go to the Trust website at www.nlg. nhs.uk/about/awards Email nlg-tr.comms@nhs.net Call 03033 302743. Please provide your name, contact number, the name of the staff member, the area they work in and the reason for the nomination. The winner of the Patient’s Choice award, will be revealed at the Our Stars 2017 event at the Baths Hall on Friday 10th November.

KNITTING UP A STORM FOR A REALLY IMPORTANT CAUSE!

A Good Yarn

Needles were clicking and some excellent coffee and cakes enjoyed when Riverhead Coffee played host to The Big Woolly Weekend in its shops in Grimsby and Cleethorpes. The Weekend was sponsored by wool manufacturers Bergere de France, who also supplied yarns for the event, and local organisation was courtesy of Nic Till of Riverhead Coffee and Kate Roberts of A Good Yarn. The end product of everybody's hard work was a copious supply of knitted bunting which was used to decorate the venues for the Jo Cox Get Together festivities over the following weekend, commemorating the loss of one of our bravest and best loved politicians.

A Good Yarn is a wool shop and so much more! It’s also a hub for everyone who loves knitting, whether they’re beginners or more experienced. There are knitting and crochet workshops, a regular crochet and knit club and a range of monthly activities which have covered techniques including lace knitting and finishing techniques. IN THE KNOW

If you’re a local independent business owner then welcome to

A

t The Peoples we’re well aware that the key to the success of the local economy is local business so we were excited to hear about a new local business campaign coming our way soon. Organised by Nic Till from Riverhead Coffee and marketing expert Debs Cooper the Totally Locally campaign aims to promote the local economy by making us fall back in love with our high streets. Totally Locally isn’t a government scheme. It’s a grass roots movement aimed at helping local businesses make the best of themselves by co-operating with other local businesses, because they’re all independent but interconnected. Independent businesses are the bedrock of our communities, and when they thrive they create real jobs, cohesive towns and strong economies. How so? Well imagine picking up a pork pie for your lunch. If you buy a

local made pie from a local shop, a big part of your money is passed on to the local pie maker. The shop employs a local accountant or even a decorator. In turn the pie maker who sources his meat from a local farm spends a big percentage of his money with the farmer. The farmer then spends some of his money at his local garage, the garage owner then… well, you get it. With each step, around 80% of each spend goes into the local economy. So in effect the money that stays within the local area gets more and more. Local independent businesses are far more likely to use other local firms than any of the big national giants would – it’s what makes them tick. If you’re a local business owner and you’d like to get involved in Totally Locally then have a look at the TotallyLocallyNELincs Facebook group. There’s a big launch coming up soon and we’ll see you there!

GLOW IN THE PARK MAKES A WELCOME RETURN FOR 2017!

R

unners and walkers are urged to put the date in their diary for this year’s Glow in the Park event. More than 1,400 people took part last year and people are being urged to sign up soon to avoid disappointment for the 2017 event. The event is in aid of the Little Lives Fund run by The Health Tree Foundation (HTF), the official charity of Grimsby hospital which supports women and children’s services across Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS. People who register can run, walk, jog or dance their way round the action packed 5k course as they travel through six fun zones where they will experience light shows and obstacles. It’s all taking place at the Meridian Showground on Saturday 25th November. Gates will open at 5.30pm and the fun starts at 7pm. There will be a pay bar along with UV face painting stand and fun fair, if it doesn’t rain. Lauren Alexander, HTF community champion, said: “I am delighted that Glow in the Park is returning to Cleethorpes with this great event. The turnout last year was fabulous so we hope people will sign up soon to avoid disappointment. The event is open to all ages and abilities from ageing amblers to sprightly sprinters. It is all about having fun and raising as much money as we can at the same time.” Glow in the Park registration goes live on 1st July 2017 and you can sign up at www.glowinthepark. co.uk. If you wish to do online fundraising you can create a page on www.justgiving.co.uk by searching for The Health Tree Foundation. You need to tick that you are taking part in an event and pick ‘Glow in the Park Lincolnshire’. Here’s a super easy way to cook gorgeous JCS salmon. Perfect for al fresco dining with new potatoes, salad and a crisp and refreshing glass of something white and sparkling.

Salmon Parcels Prep time: 5 minutes Cooking time: 13-15 minutes Serves: 2 Skill level: Easy

Preheat the oven to 200˚C/fan 180°C/gas mark 6. Cut two large tin foil squares (they need to be big enough to hold the salmon fillets and be folded over.) Place the salmon in the centre of the foil and drizzle over with oil. Top with the chilli, garlic, lemon and rosemary (or other herbs) and a grind of black pepper. Wrap the foil around the fish to form a secure parcel and place on a baking tray. Bake in the oven for approximately 15 minutes until the salmon is cooked through or alternatively crank up the barby and cook outdoors. Serve in the foil or transfer to a serving plate with the juices poured over.

PORN AND PREJUDICE SAVING THE STATELY HOMES OF ENGLAND? Alan Bennett has form with the heritage industry (since 1980’s classic Enjoy) and in People he revisits this fertile ground for satire but this time instead of a council house it’s a stately pile that comes under the acquisitive gaze of the National Trust. As the residents argue about whether or not they wish to open up their home to the visiting public an alternative option emerges with the arrival of a film crew, there to shoot a blue movie. There’s a visiting bishop on the loose too. And cue the laughter .... More information at www.caxtontheatre.com. ARE YOU TIRED OF WHITE WALLS? LIVE YOUR LIFE IN GLORIOUS

COLOUR

It doesn’t seem to long ago that minimalism was de rigeur. White walls. White floors. White furniture. A little bit of oatmeal to liven things up. Remember those days fondly? No. We didn’t think so. Nor do we. But you’ll be glad to hear that all that nonsense has been left far behind by a massive change in fashion which has seen colour take its rightful place once again as the key element in good interior design. All of a sudden palettes and swatches are all the rage and colour is being applied not just to walls and ceilings but to every part of your home decor. So we’ve brought together some of our favourite local businesses who certainly know about style and colour and can help you give your home that up to the minute technicolour make over.

Grimsby Sewing & Knitting 212-216 Freeman Street, Grimsby, NE Lincs DN32 9DR 01472 343921 www.craft-fabrics.com

We’ve pointed out before that Grimsby Sewing and Knitting is one of those TARDISlike shops that seem to be bigger inside than out – well now it’s even more true because proprietors Paul and Linda Haynes have expanded their empire to include the shop next door – giving them four shop widths of space to fill with top quality haberdashery. The new shop is exclusively devoted to woolcrafts and stocks a fantastic range of yarns from top names like King Cole, Stylecraft, Woolcraft, Cygnet and Sirdar plus needles, hooks, patterns and everything you might need to get the most out of your craft. They’re always happy to give advice too, so if you’re new to the world of woolcraft just drop in one day for a chat and they’ll sort you out with all you need to get started on a project that’s affordable and achievable too!

USE THE COLOUR WHEEL TO SET THINGS ROLLING So you’re thinking about giving your home the splash of colour treatment but you’re not sure where to start or you’re not clear what colours go together. You can use a colour wheel like the one on the left to help. The wheel shows you how colours are made and how they work together. First thing to notice is that on the right hand side are warm or hot colours and on the left are cool colours. If it doesn’t look that way to you then try contacting our good friends at HHS Heating! At the top and at 4 and 8 o’clock you have the primary colours yellow, red and blue. Half way between each are the secondaries - green, purple and orange, made by mixing equal quantities of the primaries. Between the secondaries are six tertiaries made by mixing a primary and a secondary. As a general rule colours which sit next to each other on the colour wheel go well together - designers call them harmonious colours. If you pick your main colour and then build a palette around it you won’t go far wrong. Colours that sit on opposite sides of the wheel are called complementaries. They go well together but in a bolder and more striking way. You could use a small amount of a complementary as an accent colour.

GREAT FUN FOR ALL AGES AT THE GROVE CARE HOME SUMMER FAIR!

T

he sun shone down on the Grove Care Home in Waltham when they held their annual Summer Fair and we went down to enjoy the festivities and to take some photographs of proceedings. There was plenty of good food and drink, games, music, dancing and laughter and there was a bouncy castle for the younger members of the community. The products of the residents’ gardening and craftworking sessions were on sale and there were stalls selling a variety of hand made and donated products. A fine time was had by one and all and we’ll be heading up to the Grove again soon to see what they’ve got going on.

DRIVERS NEEDED TO HELP SUPPORT ISOLATED CITIZENS A new voluntary transport scheme in North East Lincolnshire is looking to recruit more volunteer drivers from the local community to help support isolated residents. Organisations in the area are working together with the North East Lincolnshire Total Transport Partnership to create a transport scheme that covers the whole of NE Lincs, building on the success of other schemes in the area. The scheme is being set up by Age UK among

others and will support isolated residents and those who are unable to access public transport services. Drivers are needed to drive minibuses and to use their own cars to transport people to health appointments and social activities or to deliver meals and small pieces of equipment. Volunteer car drivers use their own vehicles and are paid at 45p per mile for each journey they make. All drivers will be DBS checked, receive training and can identify the times that they are available to suit their own commitments. If you are interested in finding out more, please contact Carole Foster, Administrator/Support Worker or any of the team at HWRCC by telephoning (01652) 637700 or by email to info@hwrcc.org.uk

MUSIC

WELCOME TO THE BEST PARTY EVER! THE PEOPLES GOES TO

From the top left: Anne-Marie, Little Mix, Emeli Sande, Lorde, JP Cooper, Kings Of Leon, James Arthur, Zara Larsson, Rag‘n’Bone Man Facing page: Katy Perry

MUSIC

I

magine the best party you ever went to. Perfect venue. Great music over four stages. Excellent food. Add in some fairground rides and your favourite radio personalities to make the whole thing go with a swing. Arrange it so it’s free admission (albeit with some minor ticketing and transport expenses). Then arrange for the sun to shine like it’s never going to stop. Add that all together and you’ve pretty much got the Radio 1 Big Weekend which this year came to Burton Constable Hall, just outside Hull, as part of the City of Culture Celebrations, and in the opinion of many, the highlight of the whole cultural shebang. The Peoples was lucky enough to shushed by everyone around him. get an invite and we were treated It was a day dominated by pop and to fabulous performances by the all the better for it. I don’t get to likes of Little Mix, Rita Ora, Lorde, Kasabian, Imagine Dragons, Rag’n’Bone Man, Haim and of course the headliners, Kings of Leon and Katy Perry. What more could you wish for? Well Alt-J, Biffy Clyro, Emeli Sande, Clean Bandit and Stormzy would be a start. The line up offered something for all tastes, from synth beats to rock, from pure bubblegum to grime and hip hop, and from electro-folk to seventies disco (that last one courtesy of the extraordinary Christine and The Queens, all the way from France and absolutely brilliant). Of course with such a line up spread over a huge field you can’t see everything and you can be sure that everyone shoot a lot of chart acts. I see a lot missed at least one of their favourites, of punk and heavy metal and lo-fi but hey that’s festivals for you, and and alt-country but pop just seems at least at this one you could be sure to pass me by so seeing the likes of that whoever you were missing them Little Mix, Lorde and Clean Bandit for was probably pretty great. was a big thrill. Of course it was all happening In the end it was the women what within the week of the Manchester won it. Some I’d seen before like attack and while no-one was going Anne-Marie who played her own to let it dampen their spirits it was set early in the day in the Where It ever present, the elephant in the Begins big top and then came onto field. People were cautious and the main stage to join Clean Bandit surprisingly well behaved. I didn’t for Rockabye. She gets better every see any trouble at all during the time I see her. Some, like Dua Lipa whole weekend and police reported and Charli XCX were new (or even no arrests. Security was tight at the news) to me but they were great and perimeter but once you were in it real ear openers. was unobtrusive and everyone was Highlights? Well it seems a bit helpful and the minutes silence was redundant to even talk about them incredibly moving even to an old because it was one highlight after cynic like me. I felt really sorry for the another all weekend. guy near me who didn’t realise it had Best new (to most people) band: started and who suddenly laughed Life who I could only hear and not and swore loudly, only to be angrily see from my position backstage. great Hull band on their way to the top and with a new album out. The Amazons were good too. Best new (to me) band: Alt-J. How did I manage to go this long without listening to Alt-J? I remember all the praise heaped on An Awesome Wave but for some reason our paths never crossed. I’m ashamed to admit that with the keyboard reference for a name I think I assumed they were another of those techno acts that play laptops and dance on tables. Anyway the good thing is I now have a new favourite band. Best playing laptops and dancing on tables: Galantis and The Chainsmokers joint winners. Impressive balancing skills. Most awesome vocal: Rag’n’Bone Man. The man is a genius. Best dancing: Lorde. I’m going to practice till I can do it too. Lorde also gets the most photogenic performance award. I could photograph Lorde all day and never get bored. Nicest surprise: Little Mix. Little Mix pretty much sum up the kinds of bands I don’t get to see but they were great, even if they did get themselves temporarily thrown off the iPlayer. Ah, the exuberance of youth. Best bubblegum bubble blown live on stage: Nathan Followill, drummer from Kings of Leon. Impressive size and symmetry and great breath control, blowing, bursting and retrieving all in perfect time to the music. And the highlight of the weekend? Well that has to be Katy Perry. She brought the set from her world tour with her and just lit the evening on fire. It’s a fact that some performers don’t give it a hundred percent for festival stages, but Katy Perry gave it everything. Sensational. I can’t remember ever seeing a performance so perfect. So thanks to Radio 1 for arranging the best party Hull has ever seen and if you could arrange to bring it back next year that would be just great.
