Abbey Walk Gallery and Daler Rowney combine to take creative projects into local schools To celebrate the Olympic Games Abbey Walk Gallery were pleased to work with two year 2 classes at South Parade School Grimsby. The children had visited Abbey Walk Gallery to view an Exhibition and the owners Gill Gibbon and Elaine Munson had been so impressed with their enthusiasm that they sourced sponsorship from Daler Rowney and a local businessman to provide two art workshops at the school. Artists worked with the children at South Parade to paint images that had been inspired by the arrival and procession of the Olympic Torch through Grimsby and Cleethorpes. The exciting vibrant work of the pupils will be exhibited at the Gallery during the duration of the Paralympic Games. Both Gill & Elaine commented that the children were a delight to work with and the work they produced in such a short lesson was fabulous, full of colour and energy. The judges will no doubt have a very difficult time when awarding the prizes. Andrew Ivill from Daler Rowney said: - “Gill and Elaine at Abbey Walk do a fantastic job in promoting Art in the local community. Daler Rowney are happy to support them and the Pupils of South Parade Infant School who have shown interest in taking up Art.”

Out & About
The Man Who Invented Reggae Comes To Cleethorpes! The legendary Toots & The Maytals bring some Caribbean exuberance to the Pier Grey skies overhead didn’t trouble the crowds who gathered at the newly refurbished Pier as ska legends Toots Hibbert and The Maytals arrived to deliver a high energy show featuring a string of hits including Monkey Man, Funky Kingston, Country Roads and 5446 That’s Not My Number. The band hold the record for the most number one hits in their home island of Jamaica with a total of 31 and in the early days of their careers their popularity eclipsed even that of their labelmates The Wailers and their 1968 hit Do The reggay was the
first record ever to use that word. Toots himself did not show any sign of his 67 years as he took to the stage in a black bandana and wraparound mirror sunglasses and from the opening bars of Pressure Drop the crowd were dancing and his seven piece band produced a skilful and energetic mixture of reggae, ska and rocksteady that ensured that the tempo never dropped all evening. Promoters BadBoy Music are promising to bring more big name acts to the resort so check out their Facebook page for more details and we’ll see you there!

Sleep Easy
Are you getting a good night’s sleep ? It’s nature’s special remedy! From time to time however many of us will suffer from insomnia - difficulty with getting to sleep or with staying asleep long enough to feel refreshed. Stress and anxiety are common causes of insomnia, but it can also be caused by conditions such as depression, schizophrenia or asthma, some
All of us need sleep - it rests our minds and bodies and restores our energy. Some people need more sleep than others but on average we need between six to nine hours of sleep per night in order to wake up feeling refreshed and ready for the day ahead. A lack of sleep during the night can have a big impact on how you feel during the day which can in turn affect your relationships, how you do your job and how others perceive you. Bad sleep can have a wide variety of causes such as pain, worry or the presence of too much light but a common cause is trying to sleep in an uncomfortable or unsuitable bed.
medications and alcohol or drug misuse. If lack of sleep becomes a problem and begins to affect your daily life then you should consult your GP who will have a range of approaches to discuss - nowadays sleeping pills tend to be a last resort and talking cures such as CBT are preferred.

A system crash can cost us dear - but so can anti virus software! Here computer expert Dave J Ellis of DJIT Services tells us .......
How to keep your computer virus and malware free without it costing the earth
People often say that an you can’t get something for nothing and most of the time they’re right but when it comes to computer protection and antivirus software then the truth is that there are some good products available for free which makes a nice change. The big antivirus companies use the home users for information purposes. They distribute their software for free to home users so that it can report back on what viruses and malwares are out there and keep track on what Viruses are doing the rounds. When a new virus is released, it can be detected by the home user first and the antivirus software would then send a report back on what was found and where from.
But how do they make their money if you get the software for free? Well the version you get will be a cut down version which will just cover the anti Virus side of security. The full or pro version will have built in firewalls and anti fraud options. These are useful features but not entirely necessary for day to day use. They are aimed at the business side of the market. Plus if someone has a particular piece of software at home and it works well then they are more likely to use it at work, so the security companies gain there as well. So what’s out there for free and where can you find it? Here are some examples of programmes which are tried and tested and trusted by the IT community. AVG Free - www.free.avg.com - AVG has been around since 1982 when it was launched by the Czech software company Grisoft. It is one of the most

trusted anti virus packages out there - and the free version allows for autoscanning and link scanning. Avast - www.avast.com - is another highly respected anti virus software - but this one has anti spyware and rootkit protection and scans files exchanged across P2P networks. Microsoft Security Essentials www.windows.microsoft.com/ en-GB/windows/products/ security-essentials - if you’re a Windows user then this is a great little package that helps to protect against viruses, spyware, trojans and other malwares. Avira - www.avira.com - another excellent piece of free virus scanning software, at one time this programme automatically installed the Ask.com toolbar by default but following major protests it has ceased to do so.

DJIT Services is a mobile one stop computer and laptop repair service - when you have a problem just give Dave a call on 07754 747581 and he’ll be round to sort it out. Services Directory 21 Summer is the time to be thinking ahead .......
Is your home energy ready for winter ?
One thing’s for sure - energy prices are very unlikely to start falling any time soon - in fact most analysts are expecting them to rise steadily over the next few years. So making your home as energy efficient as possible makes sense for everybody - but it can be hard to know where to start. Research suggests that 25% of a home’s lost heat goes through the roof, with 35% going through
unfilled walls, 10% through single glazed windows, 15% through floors and 15% through drafts but in a crowded market place where everyone has a product to sell it’s hard to know who to turn to for impartial advice. A good place to go is the www. direct.gov.uk where you can find a lot of information about schemes designed to make energy efficiency more affordable, such as the Warm Front scheme which enables homeowners to insulate their lofts, walls and water tanks and the Green Deal which is designed to make it easier to obtain finance for improvements to a homes’ energy efficiency, with the money being repaid through utility bills. Both of these are fantastic schemes and if you haven’t already enquired it must be worth taking a look to see if you’re eligible. And of course there are always some simple steps that we can take to reduce our energy consumption, starting with turning off unused lights, not leaving appliances on standby overnight and dealing with drafts and leaks that suck the heat from our living rooms and out into the cold night air. It’s a good idea to get an expert in to have a look at your heating systems every so often - modern systems are so much more efficient than older ones that replacing them makes a lot of sense and can pay for itself within a few years.

Knitting & Crochet
two of my favourite things with Kate Roberts of A Good Yarn
Knitting and Crochet are two of my favourite words. They conjure up images of soft squidgy balls of yarn, whether it is cheap and cheerful acrylic or gorgeous hand dyed silk; beautiful, elegant garments or quirky novelty knits, there is a place in my heart for it all. For me, enjoyment comes from the sheer pleasure of creating something from scratch. Firstly choosing the pattern, whether it is for the home, an accessory such as a bag, or a garment. Next, choosing the yarn; does it need to be durable and washable, can I use a luxury yarn such as
silk or alpaca, will it benefit from a textured or patterned yarn? The possibilities are endless. This is where a good yarn shop is invaluable - it’s more than just a shop - it’s a knowledge base. They should be able to help you with these decisions, guide you to an appropriate project and also give you help with the pattern if necessary. One of the best
In
ways to develop your knitting or crochet skills is to join a local group. Being part of a group opens up a world of new opportunities; you can share your love of the craft with like minded people whose eyes don’t glaze over every time you mention yarn. You will always find a mix of abilities in a group and it is surprising how even the most novice member has something to offer; you also have the confidence to try a new project safe in the knowledge there will be someone on hand if you hit a snag. A group is also a good way to get new ideas, seeing someone working on a project can often give you inspiration. When several members of a group are working on identical projects it is always interesting how different the outcomes can be with every finished item being unique. Whether your passion is knitting or crochet just enjoy it in a way that makes you happy. Visit your local yarn shop for expert advice and join a group to pick up new skills and ideas and to share your own knowledge.
A Good Yarn
the year since she opened her premises in Cambridge Street, Cleethorpes Kate Roberts has worked wonders - making her shop into a hub of the local knitting community, for both beginners and experienced knitters alike. With its beautiful decor and welcoming atmosphere this shop provides the perfect setting to gather for a chat during classes and drop in sessions. On Tuesday afternoons, Friday mornings and Saturday afternoons there are workshops for knitting and crochet groups and on the first Saturday of each month the crochet club meets and a qualified tutor will teach to both novices and experienced crocheters. Another monthly workshop offers tutoring from national workshop presenters who offer a programme which includes beading, freeform, finishing techniques, lacemaking, knitting and crochet. The shop has a wide range of materials to cater for knitters and crocheters alike, including yarns, wools and haberdashery, needles, books and patterns, with prices to suit all pockets. Kate’s passion for her craft is deep rooted and you can tell from a few minutes conversation with her just how dedicated she is to this pastime and how much she enjoys bringing it back to life in this little gem of a shop. Love it or loath it the goth look is definitely the in look for Autumn 2012 - it turned up in all the big shows in Paris, London and Milan and most designers had a take on it so you can expect the chains and supermarkets to follow suit. ot this Autumn ....
ways easy keeping up but here’s our look at five of the hottest fashionista trends for this autumn
2
.... purple! Well it had to happen sooner or later expect to see vast hordes of purple goths on the streets it’s going to be like a zombie attack on a Ribena factory. Cosmetics and accessories will follow the trend so best get shopping - unless of course you already have a healthy supply of purple in your wardrobe and make up bag! Don’t we all? .... belt. Belts were big news at all the shows and the cinched look is back in fashion again. As with the goth look the best bet is to be as bold as you dare - the idea this autumn is that women are supposed to have curves - no prizes

for stick insects this year! Huge pockets on jackets are also in vogue as well as the peplum which looks set to stay around.

And this year’s essential item for every wardrobe ?- Ladies and gentlemen ...... the cape! Featured by Dolce & Gabbana, Stefano Pilati for YSL and by Celine the cape is set to take autumn 2012 by storm - and you don’t even have to wear one of those funny hats with pointed ears or a utility belt either! Under the cape - anything you like so long as it’s cinched with a good big ...

Last but not least - leather - it’s an old favourite but it looks set to dominate this year. Whatever you want it’s probably available in leather - for many designers it’s this year’s luxury fabric of choice. Wide shirts and jackets are set to be the rage especially with lapels and features in contrasting shades. All of which means that if a purple goth in a leather cape with a cinched dress comes up to you in the street - don’t be surprised - they’re bang on trend!

A Day In The Life .... Kimberley Spauls - Box Office Manager at Grimsby Central Hall
No two days are ever quite the same in my job – that’s one of the reasons why I love it so much. The box office opens from 10.30 to 2.30 Tuesday to Saturday and the first task of the day is always to check the phone and email for overnight messages and to respond to any queries which have been made. People can pay for their tickets by phone and then either pick them up on the night or come in to collect them but lots of people come to buy their tickets in person and this is useful if they have special requirements as to where they are seated because we can go into the hall and find the seats which will be exactly right for them. For example someone who is a piano student may wish to be seated so that they have a clear view of the keyboard. I’m always happy to give visitors a guided tour of the hall – it’s a fantastic building that I never get tired of. It was built in 1936 and is the oldest surviving continuously used concert venue in Lincolnshire – it is reputed to have the finest acoustics in the area. From the outside the building seems so ordinary but when you lead people into the auditorium for the first time you can hear them gasp in amazement! Once the overnights have been dealt with I usually turn to promotional matters - the marketing materials and displays need to be constantly updated to keep them relevant. We produce posters, leaflets and flyers for acts that are performing here and I design most of them which is fun because we have some really exciting events in the offing. At the moment we are trying to expand the number and range of concerts and shows that the hall plays host to. In the past some really big names including jazz legends such as Stephane Grappelli and Humphrey Lyttelton, blues man John Lee Hooker and rockers like Iron Maiden and Hawkwind have played here and we would like to re-establish it as one of the area’s premier music venues. In the forthcoming season we have performers ranging

from International Concert Pianist Richard Markham to Showaddywaddy, and from the Mersey Beatles to the Orpheus Male Voice Choir – so you can see it’s an eclectic mix with something for everyone. I close the box office at 2.30 but I’m back in the evening if there is an event taking place – it’s really nice to meet face to face with the many people who I have spoken to on the phone. Sometimes we are able to arrange special treats for members of the audience – we call them magic moments – that’s a part of the job I really love. For example many of the children who came to the Sooty Show were able to have a personal meet and greet with the stars of the show in the Sooty house and on another occasion a lady who was a big fan of Gervase Phinn the author, but who, owing to partial sightedness, was able only to listen to him on disc got to meet her hero – she was really pleased! These are really heartwarming things that make the job special! There’s always a good buzz about this place - it is run mostly by the trustees, a few part time staff and an army of volunteers and everybody is committed to making the Central Hall really special again. Outside of work I’m a real family person - I have a 21 year old daughter and my son is 13. I like reading, socialising and camping. The most exciting thing that has happened to me in my job has to be meeting Sooty and Sweep - I mean how often do you come face to face with your childhood heroes?

Writing
Flash fiction is all the rage at the moment - short stories of 500 words or less. There’s a real skill to compressing your ideas into such a brief narrative without spoiling the flow - here we present an example from local writer Josie-Anne Gray and if you fancy writing some flash fiction yourself send it to us at and we’ll print the best ones - you’ll find our email on page 4.
Postcards from a younger self by Josie-Anne Gray
The boots proved treacherous just as mum’s contemptuous stare had predicted. ‘Grandma bought me them,’ I said, sounding as lame as the boots would make me. ‘Did she?’ said mum, turning back to the ironing. My sister peered from her lurking place at the table where she was crayoning in the Grattans’ catalogue; a misdemeanour she would live to rue. ‘You look like a startled crow.
Don’t be late,’ dad had said before I huffed out of the house. ‘I dig your boots,’ said Mikey, the reason for me badgering Grandma into forking out the sixteen ninety-nine they had cost. Mikey appraised me casually. I was Gothblack, from backcombed, exploded bomb hair to pointy boots. Mikey was the coolest of the guys and I was with him on Saturday night and not just as part of the gang of regular corner dwellers.
I was on official business as his date. I sipped watery halves and watched Mikey down pints. I tried not to feel superfluous. Mikey talked to everyone except me. He attended to my beer needs and stroked my hand occasionally. For the previous three Saturday nights we had huddled in the depths of the corner. Intent. Exclusive. He walked me to the cenotaph and said, ‘You’ll be fine from here, right?’ I watched him not quite run back towards town and turned for the last mile home. My taxi money had been drunk. It was ten to four. By the hospital gates I was limping. The heel on the left boot was hanging off causing me to lope like an injured animal. By the turning to my street I was snivelling. I pulled off the broken boots feeling betrayed. My toes poking through my fishnets looked like brutalised cocktail sausages. I abandoned the boots and climbed the stairs. No words were spoken but I saw the expression on her face as mum closed the bedroom door. I was home safe. Words could wait for morning.
Grimsby - What’s In A Name?
Paige Freshwater is a local creative writing & journalism student. She sent us an article and we were impressed - if you have some factual writing you’d like to share with the world - about 250 words or so - drop it to us on an email. Have you ever wondered who named your village, and why it has that name? You may have lived in the same area all your life without knowing the full history of your own town and if you’re from round here then you have probably grown up constantly hearing jokes about Grimsby being a ‘Grim’ place to live, although that could not be further from the truth. Grimsby is a Viking word - the Vikings invaded Europe in around 700 to 1100 AD. Many settled and started up communities of their own - they named their settlements after their founders. Place names with the ending ‘by’ such as Grimsby or Selby are generally the areas Vikings first settled. There are over 200 places in Yorkshire with the ending of ‘by’ so we know how much of the area the Vikings conquered. Similarly, place names ending in ‘thorpe’ such as Scunthorpe or Cleethorpes are usually secondary settlements of the Vikings. These
Writing
settlements were often made on marginal or on poor land. One explanation of the origin of Grimsby comes from a Danish Viking conqueror ‘Grim.’ The addition of ‘by’ was created from living in an area under the first settlement of the Vikings. The Danish translation of ‘by’ is what we know as a town. It is thought that the man who conquered his town or village went on to name it after himself. The population of Grimsby at this time was around 200. By the time King John recognised medieval Grimsby in 1218 the population had grown to 1500-2000 people. The town reached its industrial peak in the 1850’s with the commissioning of the Dock Tower and a work force migrating from various ports all over the county. This in turn boosted the population to about 9000 as the town continued to grow and become famous fishing port.
