in BUSINESS turning the spotlight on local enterprise affiliation they were now about celebration and commemoration of events and people. They had become a way for people to assert their own individual identities and to tell their own stories on their skin.” The conclusion he came to was that there was a gap in the market for a high end boutique style shop offering top quality bespoke body art to a client base who wanted to enjoy not just the finished artwork but the whole experience of being tattooed. His vision was new and exciting and a world away from the usual slightly grubby backstreet image of the industry. With help from the e-factor Indy N Ink was born in Freshney Place in 2010 and has gone from strength to strength. The first thing you notice when you enter the shop is that it feels very different to other tattoo parlours. It’s light and spacious and divided into cubicles with curtain rails so that clients can have privacy if required. There’s no mess or equipment lying around either - it’s all neatly stored away. As we talk Indy is applying bright red flowers 1 Brewery St, Freshney Place, Grimsby to the leg of www.indynink.co.uk indy@indynink.co.uk Nadine who is Indy Nijjar is the entrepreneurial mastermind behind Indy N Ink - the area’s leading body art emporium. He’s also well known locally for his appearance on Channel 4’s Come Dine With Me. With his background in business management and IT Indy might seem an unlikely tattooist but he had always had an interest in body art and in 2009 he decided to try something different. He already had ink of his own so he was no stranger to the world of tattooing but he spent a long time using his academic training and his experiences as a body art customer to take a critical look at the industry, including an analysis of its history and social significance and of the changes that were occurring in the way that society viewed body art. In particular he observed that having once been taboo tattooing had now crossed many social boundaries and was seen as acceptable and desirable by many people who would formerly have shunned it, including professional people, sportsmen and entertainers. “The purpose and meaning of tattoos had changed” he explains. “Formerly a sign of

kind enough to let me get some shots of the work in progress. We’re frequently interrupted as a constant stream of people pop in to book time or make enquiries or just to say hello. Indy is a high profile local personality – his appearance on Come Dine With Me has seen to that. Did he enjoy the experience I ask him. “I loved it. It takes a bit of getting used to, because there are two film crews with you all day in shifts but after a while you forget they’re there.” And did it make a difference to his business? “A huge difference. For a while it was like being a celeb. People asked to have their photo taken with me. I gained loads of Twitter followers and Facebook friends which was great. Social media is very important to us. It’s our main advertising medium.” It’s certainly a far cry from the old days. All designs are unique, created for the individual customer and there’s no need for sterilisation because everything is single use and disposed of immediately. A long list of happy customers indicates that Indy is getting it right when it comes to judging what people want and how they feel about their ink.

In The Know Your indispensable guide to what’s going on where you live Box Office on 01472 355025 or call in to The Central Hall in Duncombe Street between 10.30am and 2.30pm Tuesday Saturday.
The Mersey Beatles Return To The Central Hall Family Christmas Concert With The Grimsby Phil The Grimsby Philharmonic Society’s Christmas Concert is always a seasonal highlight of the musical calendar and this year promises to be no exception. The Phil has long been established as one of the most vital elements of the area’s cultural landscape (last year it celebrated it’s 160th anniversary, making it the same age as the dock tower) and this year’s concert, which will take place on Saturday 14th December at The Central hall in Duncombe Street, will offer a feast of music, both traditional and innovative. Following the immense popularity of her visit to last
year’s concert the event will see the return of Janet Fulton, principal percussionist with The Manchester Camerata, who will be adding her very special embellishments to the performance. There’ll be plenty of traditional Christmas favourites but concert goers can also expect some surprises! There are still a few tickets available. To book telephone the

While we’re on the subject of The Central hall we’ll also mention that their new line up for 2014 has some outstanding musical events that you won’t want to miss out on! On February 15th there’s The Ragdolls with their tribute to the great Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons. It’s definitely a show of two halves with the first part covering the early years of The Jersey Boys careers while the second half is party time featuring songs like Can’t Take My Eyes Off You, Rag Doll, Walk Like A Man, Grease and many more. On March 8th the hall celebrates the golden years of pop when The Mersey Beatles return to Duncombe Street after their near sell out concert in 2012. Then, at the end of a barnstorming night, those not already on the dance floor gave the band a well deserved standing ovation and the hall has inundated with requests to bring them back. They are Liverpool’s official tribute band and the only all Liverpool
In The Know born, bred and based Beatles tribute band. From 2002 until 2012 they were the one and only resident band at the world famous Cavern Club. Just how good are they? Well Joe Flannery, The Beatles’ booking manager, says, ‘When they play in The Cavern, they perfectly recreate the atmosphere that the original Beatles produced. I could close my eyes and it would be like listening to The Beatles again.’ It’s the live concert that The Fab Four never gave and features all those memorable hits in a brilliant two-hour show. So we’ll see you there for a twist and a shout.
The Humber Belles Round Off 2013 In Style They’ve had a busy year at The Humber Belles ladies’ choir and they’re going to rushed off their feet in the run up to Xmas too. During the year they have entertained at various venues in the area including performances in Leeds for The White Rosettes, at the Grimsby Marina’s Summer Fair, a Concert at The Memorial Hall in May and performing in the Cleethorpes Festival of Music And Words, winning a trophy too, to add to their growing collection. They have also organised two fashion shows a ceilidh. If you’d like to hear the belles perform then they’ll be at Grimsby

Marina’s Christmas party on Saturday 14th December and on 31st January 2014 they will be singing again at The Central Hall with the Orpheus Choir and on 15th March at Richard Markham’s Concert which is always a sell out. The Ancient Mariner Rides Again This year’s grimsby Literary Festival was a resounding success and one of the highlights was a relay performance of Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s poem The Ancient Mariner which began at The Dock Tower and ended up in front of an appreciative crowd at St James’ Square. Pictured right and standing beside the Fishermen’s memorial is Grimsby’s very own Ancient Mariner, created by the talented people at the Mizuchi Theatre, who presided over proceedings on the square with the assistance of readers including poet Anthony Suter and local musician John Conolly who rounded off the event with his new song Joe Pearson, about the life of an ordinary fisherman. Other highlights of the Festival

included poetry readings at many venues, the premiere of Tokyoko, a new play by local writer Josie Grey which went on to scoop many awards, cabaret with Kiki Lovechild as The Weatherman and an evening of readings by poet John Hegley at Petit Delight. All in all a very successful and varied set of events with something fort everyone. You can find details of upcoming events at www.theculturehouse.co.uk

Green Fingers Keep your garden looking great through the winter with top tips from Garden Expert Mark Howarth of Garden Aid. Winter is nobody’s favourite season but at Garden Aid we know there is plenty to be done tidying up and getting things ready for spring. It’s a busy time for us at Garden Aid because many of the winter garden tasks are real back breakers. Perennials can be cut back and divided and it’s time for cleaning out and disinfecting pots if necessary. If you have planting to do in the new year then you should start double digging, working in lots of organic matter as you go. The vegetable plot can be cleared and composted and tender plants can be protected with bubble wrap or fleece. Winter bedding like pansies and primroses can be planted out in November and in December root cuttings can be taken from poppies and phlox.

Perfect Poinsettias We all love poinsettias - but many of us buy fresh ones each winter when it is possible to keep them going throughout the year. Poinsettias hate draughts
just attract gulls and vermin. Grated cheese is popular, especially with blackbirds, and dried fruit and soft apples are ideal for thrushes and starlings. You may like to consider fruiting shrubs like Malus, Sorbus, Cotoneaster and Pyracanthus to provide natural supplies - at Garden Aid we have assisted many people in planting their borders with plants that help garden wildlife. Nuts and seeds are good - black niger seed is particularly acceptable to goldfinches. It’s also important to put some water out in shallow sloping sided dishes to allow for washing when frost sets in.

so don’t let the temperature fall below 15ºC. Let the soil dry out before watering and feed once a month with a low nitrogen, high potassium fertiliser. In April cut them back hard leaving just a four inch stem and let them grow on in a warm bright place. To colour them for Xmas make them think it’s winter. Move them into a darkened room for 12 hours a day while maintaining a steady temperature of 18ºC (55ºF) and they should redden up nicely. A Time For Giving And lest we forget the true meaning of Xmas I’d like to take this opportunity to tell you about a project very dear to my heart - assisting the Mukunyu district of Uganda. At Garden Aid we donate 10% of our profits to this cause and at the moment we are seeking further assistance in trying to raise £10,000 for a new hospital and workshop and also to ship a girl’s wheelchair in time for Christmas. If you’d like to help or if you need some assistance with your garden call us on 07742 638423 or contact us via www. agecareug.org - every donation means a lot especially at this special time. Christmas Recipes
Christmas is a time for enjoying the good things in life and not worrying too much about the calories. So here are a couple of our favourite Christmas luxury recipes to enjoy. Bon appetit!
Christmas Treats Christmas Pudding Ice Cream With Warm Date Fudge Sauce
125g Dates 2 drops vanilla essence
Ice Cream: 400ml whipping cream 40ml of Orange Liqueur 175g Mixed Fruit 35g Mixed Peel 100g Cranberries 25g Hazelnuts, chopped 50g Icing Sugar
Mix the dried fruit, peel & alcohol in a bowl and leave overnight to soak. Whip the cream together with the icing sugar until it just holds its shape. Fold in the fruit mix, cranberries and chopped hazelnuts. Pour into a 1 pint pudding basin lined with cling film and freeze until firm. To serve turn the ice cream out onto a dish and leave in the refrigerator to soften for 1 hour. For the sauce put the milks, butter and sugar into a pan and heat slowly, stirring continuously until the sugar has dissolved. Bring to the boil and heat gently, stirring constantly, for about 5 minutes or until the sauce is thick and golden in colour. Remove from heat, beat well and stir in the dates and vanilla. Use sauce warm rather than hot.
Sauce: 200g condensed milk 200g evaporated milk 50g butter 125g Granulated sugar
Mini Christmas Cakes Makes 12 Preparation Time: 20 mins Cooking Time: 40 mins 180g Sultanas 180g Raisins 100g Glace Cherries 30g Candied Peel 50ml Brandy 100g Unsalted Butter 75g Dark Brown Sugar 100g Plain Flour 2 tsp Mixed Spice 1 Small Orange, zest and juice ½ tbsp Black Treacle 2 Medium Eggs 50g Flaked Almonds Soak the sultanas, raisins, glace cherries and candied peel in the brandy for 48 hours, in a covered bowl. Preheat the oven to 140°C (Fan 120°C), Gas Mark 1. Use 25g of the butter to generously grease the twelve cups of a deep muffin tin. Beat the remaining butter until soft in a large mixing bowl and then stir in the sugar.
Sift the flour and mixed spice together into the bowl and beat until evenly combined with the butter mixture. Add the orange zest and juice along with the black treacle and gradually beat in the eggs, one at a time. Fold the alcohol soaked fruit and almonds into the batter and gently mix until evenly distributed. Spoon the mixture into the greased muffin tin cups. Fill to the top of each cup, but do not overfill. Bake on the bottom shelf of the preheated oven for 30-40 minutes. Leave to cool.

Business Round Up
Local Businesses Looking Forward To A Prosperous New Year It’s been a tough 2013 but many local businesses are hoping that the few green shoots of economic recovery that have been visible recently keep growing into a fully fledged recovery for 2014. Many economists, both national and international, are predicting that this is the year when we finally throw off the shackles of the 2008 banking crisis and things start to really pick up. With inflation figures low (influenced largely by the falling cost of fuel at the pump) and an upturn in the housing, construction and civil engineering markets there are healthy signs that things are on the move but many experts predict that the recovery will need to be kick started by an increase in consumer confidence and spending. At present the retail sector is enjoying a small increase in revenues with consumer spending up by about 1% on this time last year but a lot will depend on how loud and often the Christmas tills ring. That means that how ordinary people feel about the economy and their own financial prospects will be at least as important as what the experts have to say on the subject and that suggests that wages levels will be vitally important. It will take until 2019 before average pay reaches it’s pre crash levels and with increased pressure on family budgets from rising domestic fuel prices times will be tough for a while to come, but with luck the worst of the recession is behind us all and the good times are on the way.

In The Know Snake Davis To Play Two Nights At Barton Ropery Barton Ropery welcomes back the great Snake Davis in December following his successful visit last year. This time around Snake will be performing on two consecutive nights, Friday 27th December and Saturday 28th December, giving the audience the opportunity to watch his shows either seated or as a standing gig. Once upon a time, a long time ago, in the student bar of Leeds Polytechnic, “Snake Davis and his Alligator Shoes” were born. A soulful unit playing sax versions of Stax, Motown and Atlantic classics. They went on to be embraced by the Northern Soul scene. They lit up the Astoria Ballroom and Central Station, Leeds as they played to some of the most passionate and committed music loving crowds

anywhere in the world. Reformed a couple of years ago, Snake Davis and The Suspicions have been heralded as the best Soul band performing live in the UK today. They feature Snakes’ searing Junior Walker inspired sax, the sumptuous vocals of Doreen Edwards and Sue Quinn, trumpet and a killer rhythm section. Snake Davis is one of the most admired instrumentalists in the industry and has appeared on many of the most successful recordings of the past twenty years. If you’re a fan of music then you’ll be familiar with his work even if you don’t realise it. The list of performers with whom he has worked, both live and in the studio, includes Ray Charles, Tom Jones, Culture Club, George Michael, Tina Turner, Take That, Kylie Minogue, Paul McCartney and Motorhead. The list goes on for far too long for us to name them all. He has also made numerous TV appearances and written scores for the stage and the film industry.

Remember to store your emergency breakdown number in your mobile phone. And best of all get your vehicle down to a trusted local garage for a proper service - it’s a decision you won’t regret!
