It was non stop.” Lee did his apprenticeship with his dad in the early 1990s but then he went back to college and retrained as a refrigeration engineer, only rejoining the family business in 2002. How do they find working together? Do they get on? “It works just fine. There was a time when we’d have argued non stop but nowadays we get on

at his son. “He’s the boss”. He sounds like he means it but it’s hard to tell because they’re both laughing all the time. In fact they get on so well they spend a lot of time together outside work too, fishing on the Broads or out in the Humber, although Alan doesn’t share Lee’s enthusiasm for his ten mile bike ride every morning before work. And will another generation of the Norman family be entering the business? Well, Lee and his wife Toni (who is a care home manager) have three children, Jack, Brandon and Ethan. At present eldest son Jack is more interested in his band Vorltex than in pipes and spanners however given how much Alan and Lee appear to enjoy working together you certainly wouldn’t rule it out.

Valentine Winter Picnic With Merlin’s Keep! There may be romance in the air on Saturday 15th February when popular local Celtic band Merlin’s Keep come to the Madhouse in Markham Hall at St James School for an evening billed as a Valentine’s Winter Picnic. Local Author’s Debut Novel In The Shops Now! Grimsby novelist Rebecca Mascull’s debut novel The Visitors was published in January by Hodder and Stoughton. The Visitors tells the story of Adeliza Golding a deaf blind girl in late Victorian England whose only friends are the Visitors, mysterious acquaintances only she can sense. A teacher arrives to free her from the prison of her inability to communicate through the gift of finger spelling and her friendship with her teacher and the woman’s beloved brother leads them from the hop gardens and oyster beds of Kent to the dusty veldt of South Africa and the Boer War and the truth about the Visitors. It’s a blend of history, romance and classic ghost story and has been gathering excellent reviews since its publication.

Rebecca has a Masters in Creative Writing and was formerly the leader of professional writing courses at Grimsby College. As part of her research for the novel she spent time working with deaf children and came

A Happy New Year To ONE AND ALL! January 31st marks the start of the Chinese New Year, bringing to an end the Year Of The Snake and welcoming in the Year Of The Horse. It’s an important time of year with festivities spread over 15 days, starting on New Year’s Eve and ending with the Festival Of Lanterns. By tradition the celebrations begin with a thorough cleaning of the home and the decoration of doors and windows with paper cuts. Gifts of money in red envelopes are frequently given, especially to young unmarried people and children. The zodiac is derived from the story of how the Jade Emperor ordered that all the animals should attend his court and that years would be named after each animal in the order of their arrival. This involved crossing a great river and neither the rat nor the cat could swim so they both hitched a ride on the back of the ox, who was the best swimmer. Half way across the rat pushed the cat into the water and it never reached the court which is why there is no year of the cat. As they neared the far bank the rat jumped off the ox’s nose and ran ahead. He arrived first so the first year of the zodiac is the Year Of The Rat with The Year Of The Ox second.

Learn something new this spring with the WEA at The Central Hall The WEA (The Workers’ Educational Association) is the UK’s largest voluntary sector provider of adult education, running courses wherever they are needed in the local community - for example in clubs, pubs, community centres, schools or workplaces. They offer a wide range of courses organised around four central themes: employability, community engagement, cultural education and health and well being. Life Long Learning Do you panic when the kids ask you to help with their homework? Do you wish you could remember all that Maths and English stuff from school? Our new regular feature will try to remind you of some of what you used to know, starting with .....

The Secret Of Learning Times Tables If you’re anything like us then you probably still have nightmares about being at school and saying your tables over and over and never being able to remember them when the lesson ended. But there are some simple rules that you can follow which can help make times tables much easier to learn. They don’t get rid of the memorising completely but they cut it to a minimum.

Rule 1

With multiplication it doesn’t matter what order the numbers are in. 3x7 is the same as 7x3 but for some reason it’s less intimidating. That’s cut the number of sums you have to learn in half already.

Rule 2

The 2x table isn’t hard - just add each number to itself. 2x9 is the same as 9+9. The 3x table is okay too if you remember that the digits of numbers in the table, like 15, 21 or 36 always add up to 3, 6 or 9.

Rule 3

The 5x table just goes 5, 10, 15 and so on. Most people can count in 5’s. The 10x table is similar - just put a nought on the end of the number to multiply by 10 so 2x10 is 20, 7x10 is 70 and so on.

Rule 4

The 9x table can be one of the tricky ones but fortunately there is a sneaky rule to help you to remember it. The digits of all the numbers in the 9x table 18, 27, 36 and so on always add up to 9.

Rule 5

And we’re up to the 11x table. Sounds tricky but not so bad if you remember that all the numbers in the table (up to 100 anyway) are double digits - 33, 66, 88 etc. 10x11 is 110 - that’s 11 with a 0 on the end.

from Grimsby to Kampala According to researchers almost 25% of couples today meet over the internet and that’s fine if you happen to meet someone who lives fairly close but for Mark Howarth of Garden Aid his online introduction to his future fiancée marked the start of a long distance relationship that spanned two continents and more than 4000 miles! Mark joined an international Christian pen pal club because he enjoyed receiving news from all over the world and learning about the lives of people in far away places but there was one

Betty was the founder of Age Care Development, a charity devoted to helping the people of Mukunyu by providing basic food supplies and medicines and building a school and hospital. When Betty went home Mark devoted much of his free time to raising money for the charity and dedicating 10% of the profits from his gardening business to the Uganda project. After several more visits and an occasional computer crash their relationship has gone from strength to strength and Mark and Betty are planning to marry soon and spend half the year in Uganda and half back in Grimsby which all goes to show that where true love is concerned distance is no problem!

so amazing and I was hooked. Having a dollhouse opens a whole new world and you can put to use all the talents you have and learn some new ones along the way, interior design, decorating, sewing, knitting, crochet to name a few. If I can’t find what I want, I have a go at

making it. Some things are not perfect by any manner or means but I have had the pleasure of doing it. Some people stick to a particular period of design, others put in what they like. I am one of the latter. I built my house from a kit as I wanted to put my own stamp on it and it gives scope for making any alterations, like adding a window or door. Of all the hobbies I have, and they are numerous, I think my house is my favourite. So if you want something to do on the cold days of winter or rainy days of summer, think about having a doll’s house and get your creative juices flowing. Plans are well under way for the 2014 Jazz and Folk Festivals (more about them next issue) but the line up for the Cleethorpes Blues Festival has been posted and it looks like a humdinger with Walter Trout headlining and support from the Royal Southern Brotherhood among others.

On Wednesday 12th March 60s legends The Move are at The Yardbirds. Led by drummer Bev Bevan, who founded The Move and ELO and was also drummer for Led Zeppelin for a while they were the first band to be played on Radio 1 when Flowers In The Rain was broadcast on September 30th 1967. Out at Barton Ropery on February 21st they’re getting a visit from Canadian Western Swing combo Petunia and The Vipers whose sound is based on adding Latin rhythms to country blues tunes or gypsy flavouring to rockabilly standards. Fusion Youth Theatre - A New Project Following on from their prizewinning success with Tokoyo in 2013, Fusion Theatre and Josie Gray have teamed up with Humberside Police to devise a play that tackles issues of online identity, cyber bullying and the darker side of social networks. The play is intended to empower young people to make safe and sensible online choices and to seek help when they or their friends are being targeted by online bullies. The play is currently in development and will be ready for performance in July. Full details will be available nearer the time. The Ministry of Transport have announced that after nearly a hundred years of service the tax disc has finally had its day. The original discs were yellow and were issued in 1921 but they have been made redundant by live database enquiries. The last discs will be issued later this year and from there on car tax will be managed electronically. The Department for Transport has pledged £30,000 to enable CTC, the national cycling charity to revamp its Fill That Hole pothole reporting website

and develop a new smartphone app. Fill That Hole allows road users to report potholes and sends local authorities up to the minute information about potholes which they may not otherwise have known about, allowing them to identify trouble spots needing action fast. Flash Fiction In today’s 24 hour society when everybody is constantly on the move and time poor, some of the things that used to take hours now have to be crammed into minutes. No tittering at the back. Flash fiction is the literary equivalent of the power nap and the al desko lunch - a whole story compressed into as few words as possible. Here Jim White delivers a cautionary tale of crime and punishment in just 300 words .....

He had always been the faithful clerk at the beck and call of them all. Appreciated but not really noticed, but while they weren’t noticing him he was taking notice of them and their deals, learning a little more every day. He was always pleasant and obliging; left to close files up and put things away. Most of them

didn’t even know his name, but he knew all of theirs and what they did. He started one night by moving some money from one clients account to another as if it was a genuine mistake. Then he waited a few months and when nothing happened, he started to siphon off a little from the files he was left

to close up and the ones whose passwords he’d memorised into a bank account he’d set up in a fictitious name. He was cautious and he thought, not too greedy. Who would suspect him, he was just a clerk. After four years he’d accumulated almost £2 million pounds. He transferred that to an offshore account. After a few weeks he handed in his notice, claiming ill health and left with a few wish you well cards and a month’s salary. Now after waiting what he thought was a reasonable time, here he was, sitting on his balcony in his small flat in Brazil where he’d been for a month, enjoying the sunshine and all the pleasures he’d dreamed of. He was so pleased with his achievement. It was a piddling amount compared to their bonuses. There was only a brief moment for a look of surprise on his face as the bullet hit him between the eyes. At last he had been noticed! There is no such thing as a free lunch.

The Dock 2014 Listen by Sime Naylor

Supported by Arts Council England and established by The Culture House in 2012, The Dock is a resource for local writers and for those who live and work further afield. Each month the site, www.thedock.info, features the work of a poet or writer and already slots are taken up to May of 2014. In February, singer songwriter, poet and children’s author Simon Naylor (image inset) picks up the mantle of featured writer. Simon is well known in the region and his residency on the site will bring his work to a new audience. Following Simon in March, widely published poet David Cooke will be our guest.
