in BUSINESS spotlight on local enterprise C.A.Norman (Plumbing & Heating Ltd) is a real family firm. Now a partnership between Alan and his son Lee they’ve established a reputation that’s second to none because both father and son share a commitment to quality which means doing the job right first time and always giving their customers first class service. Whether it’s a leaky tap or a faulty radiator or a state of the art wet room or even a full solar panel installation C.A.Norman are a firm that you can rely on. They’ve got years of experience in the trade, an impressive range of skills and expertise and maybe because they’re a father and son team they have an easy going ‘can do’ attitude that means that they’re people who you’d be happy to have working in your home. Alan qualified as a plumber and gas engineer in 1971, setting up in business on his own in 1974. “It was something I always

wanted to do,” he explains, “to work for myself. I always fancied being my own boss. And the 1970s were the ideal time to start out because it was the beginning of the home central heating boom - everybody wanted new radiators. It was non stop.” Lee did his apprenticeship with his dad in the early 1990s but then he went back to college and retrained as a refrigeration engineer, only rejoining the family business in 2002. How do they find working together? Do they get on? “It works just fine. There was a time when we’d have argued non stop but nowadays we get on

C.A.Norman (Plumbing & Heating Ltd) offer general plumbing and heating services but are also specialists in bathroom and kitchen installation, wetrooms, underfloor heating and condensing boilers. They also undertake management on larger projects and provide services for landlords.

Trust is important to us. Many of our clients have been using us for years. It’s nice when people come back to you. It means you must have done a good job. great” says Lee. “I can’t think of anyone I’d rather work with.” And who’s in charge? Alan points

at his son. “He’s the boss”. He sounds like he means it but it’s hard to tell because they’re both laughing all the time. In fact they get on so well they spend a lot of time together outside work too, fishing on the Broads or out in the Humber, although Alan doesn’t share Lee’s enthusiasm for his ten mile bike ride every morning before work. And will another generation of the Norman family be entering the business? Well, Lee and his wife Toni (who is a care home manager) have three children, Jack, Brandon and Ethan. At present eldest son Jack is more interested in his band Vorltex than in pipes and spanners however given how much Alan and Lee appear to enjoy working together you certainly wouldn’t rule it out.

Local Author’s Debut Novel In The Shops Now! Grimsby novelist Rebecca Mascull’s debut novel The Visitors was published in January by Hodder and Stoughton. The Visitors tells the story of Adeliza Golding a deaf blind girl in late Victorian England whose only friends are the Visitors, mysterious acquaintances only she can sense. A teacher arrives to free her from the prison of her inability to communicate through the gift of finger spelling and her friendship with her teacher and the woman’s beloved brother leads them from the hop gardens and oyster beds of Kent to the dusty veldt of South Africa and the Boer War and the truth about the Visitors. It’s a blend of history, romance and classic ghost story and has been gathering excellent reviews since its publication.

Rebecca has a Masters in Creative Writing and was formerly the leader of professional writing courses at Grimsby College. As part of her research for the novel she spent time working with deaf children and came

to appreciate their courage in overcoming the limitations of deafness. The Visitors is available from Waterstones and the first chapter can be read on the Hodder & Stoughton website.

A Happy New Year To ONE AND ALL! January 31st marks the start of the Chinese New Year, bringing to an end the Year Of The Snake and welcoming in the Year Of The Horse. It’s an important time of year with festivities spread over 15 days, starting on New Year’s Eve and ending with the Festival Of Lanterns. By tradition the celebrations begin with a thorough cleaning of the home and the decoration of doors and windows with paper cuts. Gifts of money in red envelopes are frequently given, especially to young unmarried people and children. The zodiac is derived from the story of how the Jade Emperor ordered that all the animals should attend his court and that years would be named after each animal in the order of their arrival. This involved crossing a great river and neither the rat nor the cat could swim so they both hitched a ride on the back of the ox, who was the best swimmer. Half way across the rat pushed the cat into the water and it never reached the court which is why there is no year of the cat. As they neared the far bank the rat jumped off the ox’s nose and ran ahead. He arrived first so the first year of the zodiac is the Year Of The Rat with The Year Of The Ox second.

The Chinese Zodiac

The Chinese zodiac animals are arranged in a 12 year cycle. The Year Of The Rat is traditionally the first animal so this year, The Year Of The Horse, marks the beginning of the second half of a cycle.

The Secret Of Learning Times Tables If you’re anything like us then you probably still have nightmares about being at school and saying your tables over and over and never being able to remember them when the lesson ended. But there are some simple rules that you can follow which can help make times tables much easier to learn. They don’t get rid of the memorising completely but they cut it to a minimum.

Rule 1

With multiplication it doesn’t matter what order the numbers are in. 3x7 is the same as 7x3 but for some reason it’s less intimidating. That’s cut the number of sums you have to learn in half already.

11

Rule 2

The 2x table isn’t hard - just add each number to itself. 2x9 is the same as 9+9. The 3x table is okay too if you remember that the digits of numbers in the table, like 15, 21 or 36 always add up to 3, 6 or 9.

Rule 3

The 5x table just goes 5, 10, 15 and so on. Most people can count in 5’s. The 10x table is similar - just put a nought on the end of the number to multiply by 10 so 2x10 is 20, 7x10 is 70 and so on.

Rule 4

The 9x table can be one of the tricky ones but fortunately there is a sneaky rule to help you to remember it. The digits of all the numbers in the 9x table 18, 27, 36 and so on always add up to 9.

Rule 5

And we’re up to the 11x table. Sounds tricky but not so bad if you remember that all the numbers in the table (up to 100 anyway) are double digits - 33, 66, 88 etc. 10x11 is 110 - that’s 11 with a 0 on the end.

Next issue - The apostrophe - Everybody’s least favourite punctuation mark!

Step into the fabulous miniature world of doll’s houses

Bethens’ Little Folk

A wide range of dolls’ houses, miniature furniture and accessories

Twenty years ago I went to Kelham Hall with my sisters to a Dolls, Teddies and Dolls’ House Fair. I was getting supplies for my teddy making and the sisters were looking at dolls’ houses. When I went to find them I was taken into a fabulous miniature world. I had never seen anything

“be very careful, dolls’ houses can be addictive!”

so amazing and I was hooked. Having a dollhouse opens a whole new world and you can put to use all the talents you have and learn some new ones along the way, interior design, decorating, sewing, knitting, crochet to name a few. If I can’t find what I want, I have a go at

making it. Some things are not perfect by any manner or means but I have had the pleasure of doing it. Some people stick to a particular period of design, others put in what they like. I am one of the latter. I built my house from a kit as I wanted to put my own stamp on it and it gives scope for making any alterations, like adding a window or door. Of all the hobbies I have, and they are numerous, I think my house is my favourite. So if you want something to do on the cold days of winter or rainy days of summer, think about having a doll’s house and get your creative juices flowing. Do be aware though, dolls’ houses can be addictive. Jackie Butterill

New Year - New Hobby? It’s too cold for gardening and too wet for walking but we need something to while away the drab winter nights. Maybe you’d like to build a life size model of Westminster Abbey out of matchsticks? Or you fancy learning to play a musical instrument? Here are two suggestions that my be just right for you and whatever you choose we hope you have a great time and keep warm.

Pick up those needles and let’s get the world knitting! With knitting and crochet you can create a wide range of beautiful things with just a pair of sticks or a hook and some string. No matter what your budget there is always something to be made - from a mug hug for a work colleague to an heirloom shawl for a new baby. And, if you make

“whatever your budget there is always something to make” a mistake you can just pull your work back and start again. A project can cost as little as a few pounds and can be taken anywhere. It’s therapeutic and relaxing and can be shared with others or enjoyed on your own. At A Good Yarn we meet many mums who want to make hand

knits for their children but who were never taught when they were children as well as people just looking for a new hobby. We encourage people to come along to learn in our beginners’ groups. For the more experienced there are monthly workshops and there are our Knot Just Knitting sessions which take place several times a week. There is nothing like settling down with a cup of tea and your knitting, the rhythm of the needles and the feel of the yarn as it glides through your fingers – then the satisfaction as the curly little pieces are stitched into beautiful knitted or crocheted items. So, what are you waiting for? Come and see us and get knitting!

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and that’s never more true than when we’re looking at designs for our homes. Your dream sofa may be somebody else’s nightmare, their perfect carpet may look revolting to you. There are some things that most of us agree on however. We all like a bargain. Not cheap stuff of course, but we like quality at a good price. And we like style. We appreciate things that look as though they were designed with care. And we like colour, well most of us do, although some people are liable to get carried away. So on these pages we present three of our favourite local companies - Brigg Beds,

So take a good look because in three months time all the shops will be full of this colour and so, in all probability, will your home and wardrobe. New Year, New Home The housing market seems to be picking up so if you’re thinking about moving sometime soon why not take time before you go to

add some

value?

After a long time in the doldrums it looks like the recovery in the housing market that we’ve been told about for so long is finally here but before rushing to stick the For Sale sign up in your front garden maybe you should take a step back and ask yourself what you can do right now to make your house sell quicker and make you more of a profit. New research reveals that seventy per cent of home owners could not sell their home without making some repairs to the

property, with many saying the problem is with jobs that have mounted up over time. The tasks that topped the list were repainting the inside and outside of the house and tidying the garden followed by filling and plastering cracks in walls. Renewing rotting windows and doors, roof repairs and fitting a new kitchen were also common. There is however a further category of jobs which might be worth considering to add value

23

and saleability to your home and these are jobs that result in space creation. An extension is the most obvious, but also worth considering are loft, basement and garage conversions. Carried out to the highest of standards these types of investments can pay back big dividends, possibly adding as much as fifteen percent to the value of your house. So if you find yourself in the position of needing to get the very maximum value from your property take a quick look through these pages you’ll find roofers, plumbers, gardeners and a host of other tried and tested professionals who’ll be only too happy to help you add value to your home and all with the very highest reputation for quality and value.

Caring

Caring In the UK today average life expectancy is about 80 years which is 10 years more than in 1959. If the trend continues by 2060 people can expect to be living to the age of 90 which is fine if we stay well and active but if old age is accompanied by deterioration in physical and mental health then the prospect is less happy. Old age can lead to incapacity, isolation and depression but research suggests that a few fairly simple dietary and lifestyle changes can help people delay or avoid the onset of many of the illnesses and diseases associated with ageing and vastly improve their quality of life. The two key factors are what you eat and how active you are and the earlier you act to improve your diet and activity level the healthier you’re likely to be when older. Some areas of physical health are likely to benefit more than others, for example the eyes. Many elderly people suffer from vision

eggs and dairy and omega-3 fatty acids found in oily fish are good for the brain, and should help to keep people’s minds alert and agile as they age. Calcium, found particularly in dairy products is very important for the protection of bone health, as are vitamin D (from eggs, oily fish, margarine) and vitamin K (found in dark green leafy vegetables and some fruits). There can also be benefits to the heart. Omega 3 fatty acids found in oily fish; healthier fats like vegetable oils and low fat spreads, foods rich in soluble fibre such as oats, peas, beans, foods rich in folate and vitamin B12 and sources of potassium such as root vegetables and fruits like peaches and bananas are all features of a heart healthy diet.

As well as diet, physical activity is crucial. Exercise is important for keeping bones healthy but all forms of activity help reduce the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes and some cancers and help to keep the brain working well. For the less mobile there are special programmes of exercise available about which your mobility specialist will be able to give you more information. So there you go. It doesn’t guarantee perfect health but if you want to improve your chances of a happy and healthy old age a few changes to diet and lifestyle made now may make all the difference in the future.

Flash Fiction In today’s 24 hour society when everybody is constantly on the move and time poor, some of the things that used to take hours now have to be crammed into minutes. No tittering at the back. Flash fiction is the literary equivalent of the power nap and the al desko lunch - a whole story compressed into as few words as possible. Here Jim White delivers a cautionary tale of crime and punishment in just 300 words .....

All That Glisters by Jim White

He had always been the faithful clerk at the beck and call of them all. Appreciated but not really noticed, but while they weren’t noticing him he was taking notice of them and their deals, learning a little more every day. He was always pleasant and obliging; left to close files up and put things away. Most of them

didn’t even know his name, but he knew all of theirs and what they did. He started one night by moving some money from one clients account to another as if it was a genuine mistake. Then he waited a few months and when nothing happened, he started to siphon off a little from the files he was left

31

to close up and the ones whose passwords he’d memorised into a bank account he’d set up in a fictitious name. He was cautious and he thought, not too greedy. Who would suspect him, he was just a clerk. After four years he’d accumulated almost £2 million pounds. He transferred that to an offshore account. After a few weeks he handed in his notice, claiming ill health and left with a few wish you well cards and a month’s salary. Now after waiting what he thought was a reasonable time, here he was, sitting on his balcony in his small flat in Brazil where he’d been for a month, enjoying the sunshine and all the pleasures he’d dreamed of. He was so pleased with his achievement. It was a piddling amount compared to their bonuses. There was only a brief moment for a look of surprise on his face as the bullet hit him between the eyes. At last he had been noticed! There is no such thing as a free lunch.

The Dock 2014 Listen by Sime Naylor

Supported by Arts Council England and established by The Culture House in 2012, The Dock is a resource for local writers and for those who live and work further afield. Each month the site, www.thedock.info, features the work of a poet or writer and already slots are taken up to May of 2014. In February, singer songwriter, poet and children’s author Simon Naylor (image inset) picks up the mantle of featured writer. Simon is well known in the region and his residency on the site will bring his work to a new audience. Following Simon in March, widely published poet David Cooke will be our guest. There are plans this year to open a page on the dock for younger writers. For submission guidelines and full details please email the editor at jogray2@ntlworld.com

Listen! The air rings with song.

And thrum in twos and threes.

Beyond the dale The seesawing cawing of crows Is heard just below The melancholy warble of a robin.

But rising above it all, Raining sound, the skylark.

A great tit calls for its ‘Teacher, teacher, teacher.’ Like a piper, a lapwing – peewit – Leads a trail of worms on which it feeds. ‘A little bit of bread and no cheese’ Say yellowhammers as they flutter

A song apart! It defies the rest, descending, Ascending, chattering, twilling Over thirty notes a second, A song that demands close, slow attention. So I do. I slow down, lie down And listen.
