A major touring theatre project about the lives of the herring lassies is on its way to The Minster
A
largely forgotten part of Britain’s cultural history will be remembered at Grimsby Minster from June 26th-28th when Follow The Herring, a co-production between The Customs House Arts Centre and Guild of Lillians Theatre comes to town. It’s a multi faceted tour, celebrating the fishing, boat building and knitting heritage of the east coast and centred on an interconnected exhibition and theatre performance. For almost 100 years, women from fishing communities in the North East and Scotland, known as herring lassies, followed the herring fleets down the coast, meeting the catch and gutting, salting and barrelling the fish.

IN THE KNOW Grimsby was one of the towns on their route and now it has been chosen as a venue for a performance, song and visual arts event commemorating the lives of the herring lassies and the traditions which grew up around them. The exhibition is titled Coat For A Boat and features a full scale replica of a traditional fishing coble, draped in a knitted cover and filled with woollen herrings, which knitters across the UK will be encouraged to send in, so that the boat becomes increasingly full of fish as the tour progresses.

..... a hand knitted set, a full scale replica of a herring fishing coble draped in it’s own knitted coat and the story of the herring lassies brought to life on stage - Follow The Herring really is a very special event .....
The tour will also feature a production of Get Up And Tie Your Fingers (for an explanation of the title see the panel on the page opposite) by Ann Coburn, which will bring together a professional cast with a choir of local singers. The play is a fictional account of the lives of three women, set against the backdrop of the 1881 Eyemouth fishing disaster, the worst fishing disaster Britain has ever seen, with the loss of almost 20 ships and 189 men. Entire families and communities were destroyed as the herring lassies could only stand onshore and watch. The hand knitted set and staging for the exhibition will be custom made for the Minster performances and local knitting, craft and arts groups have worked with visual artists, curators and set designers on its design and creation. To find out more about Follow the Herring or for ticket information, please contact Lee Beckett at Grimsby Minster on 01472 358610 or visit the Minster website.

IN THE KNOW Ebony is 4 and she lives in Brigg. Last year she was diagnosed with stage 4 neuroblastoma, which is a childhood cancer. It’s quite a rare condition – about 100 children a year in the UK are diagnosed. She’s had chemotherapy and stem cell therapy and surgery and at present she’s doing very well but her treatment is hard work and it involves a lot of travelling. It’s tough on Ebony and it’s tough on her family but they keep smiling through.

Local Film Makers Focus 7 Seeking Crowdfunding For Action Film Challenge 2014. The 30 Day Action Film Challenge is an annual competition in which film makers all round the world are given 30 days to produce a 13 minute action movie on a given theme. Last year a team from Grimsby’s Focus 7 film company entered and came second with Havelock, a tale of alien spaceships over the Humber Bridge. This year they plan to enter again but they need to raise the funds so they’ve opened a page on www.indiegogo.com where sponsors, (individuals or businesses), can pledge money to help get the project up and running. Amounts from £1 to £500 are very welcome - and there are some great incentives on offer, depending on the amount pledged. They need £1700 so why not find them on Facebook, follow the pledging link and help to get a Great Grimsby film project off the ground.

“New writing is vital. It’s what keeps the theatre alive.” The Peoples talks to Sara Beasley of Breakwater Theatre
S
ara Beasley is an actress and co-founder of the Breakwater Theatre Company. She has appeared in films and TV shows including Emmerdale, Shameless and Scott & Bailey. How did you become interested in and involved in the theatre?
other events. They’re not highbrow, just down to earth characters, the kind of people who made the town what it is today. I also perform in street theatre as part of the Giddy Aunts and as the keeper of Clarence The Camel. Keep an eye open for us along the prom during the summer. Tell us about Breakwater. What makes it special?
I’ve been interested in the theatre since I was a child - I was a member of the Laceby Pantomime Group for many years. Eleven years ago I decided to give up a clerical job at Grimsby College to study for a drama degree at the University of Lincoln. After I graduated in 2006 with a first class (hons) degree I was offered a short internship with ELDC Arts Development. Once that ended I concentrated my efforts in becoming a professional actor. What’s been the most exciting thing you’ve done? I’ve recently been working on the new Girls Night Out film, which features Rupert Everett. It’s about princesses Elizabeth and Margaret sneaking out of the palace on VE night. We had some cold nights filming on Trafalgar Square and in Hull for that one! I also played the part of Lady Doughty in the recent Grimsby Chums film. You’re involved in lots of other projects as well? I like to be busy! I have two characters that I developed based on interviews with local people - Phyllis the Braider and Betty the Barmaid - and I frequently perform as them at local festivals and
Breakwater was founded by myself and Andy Evans who is a writer. We also have lots of help from Ben Parkes and Joseph Parfrement. It’s an adult theatre group that aims to encourage and perform new writing. We announce a theme and invite contributions from authors who are welcome to interpret it in whatever way they choose. Most of our writers are local but we’ve had contributions from all over the world. Our current theme is Smoke And Mirrors. Andy has recently started up a monthly writers’ group and welcomes anyone with an interest in writing. To find out more call the number below. How important is new writing to theatre? New writing is essential – new writers are what keeps theatre fresh and exciting. There is always a demand for new voices. Breakwater Theatre’s next show will be Smoke And Mirrors at The Warehouse in Freeman Street on Wednesday 16th July at 7.30pm, tickets £5. Breakwater can be contacted online via www.breakwatertheatre.co.uk or through Facebook or Twitter or by phone on 07928 104257.
Vote for The Visitors! Local novelist nominated for a prize at the Edinburgh Book Fesival!
I
n our last issue we ran an interview by JosieAnn Gray with local author Rebecca Mascull whose novel The Visitors had just been published by Hodder & Stoughton. The book tells the story Adeliza Golding, a deaf blind girl, born in Victorian England on her father’s hop farm who lives in a world of darkness and confusion; her only company being the ghosts she speaks to in her head, who she has christened the Visitors. It’s a story of friendship and adventure, a heartbreaking love story and a compelling ghost story. We’re now delighted to be able to tell you that The Visitors has been nominated for the First Book Award at the Edinburgh International Book Festival and what makes the award particularly special is that it is voted for by members of the public. So don’t be shy - if you read and loved The Visitors as much as we did get your computers fired up and get voting people! To vote for The Visitors go to www.edbookfest.co.uk, follow the link to the First Book Award voting page.

LIFELONG LEARNING Divide by
10
A
Dividing by ten is a basic maths skill that everybody needs and it couldn’t be easier. You just find out where the decimal point is and you move it one place to the left - just like this 32 divided by 10 is 3.2 194 divided by 10 is 19.4 34,795,237 divided by 10 is 3,479,523.7
Fair shares - Quick ways with division
couple of issues back we went through some cheats for making the times tables easier to learn and talked about how much easier life can be if you are able to multiply quickly and accurately in your head. The same goes for division (aka sharing), which many of us find more difficult than multiplying, but if you’ve ever gone Dutch at a restaurant with a big group of friends you’ll know how handy it can be to be able to share the bill out accurately. Plenty of good friendships have been spoiled by lousy long division! There aren’t as many cheats for division as for multiplying but there are a few and they can make life a lot easier!
17
Divide by
5
Dividing by five is slightly trickier but not too much. All you have to do is multiply by two and then do the decimal point shifting that you did for dividing by 10. So to divide 173 by 5 first multiply by 2 giving 346 then shift the decimal point one place left to make 34.6 so 173 ÷ 5 is 34.6 - which is a lot easier than you might think!

Not just any old food either – the name of Lincolnshire is synonymous with quality and a ‘second class will not do’ attitude that means that when you buy Lincolnshire foods you know that you’re buying the best. Lincolnshire’s famous food heritage includes succulently marbled beef from the Lincoln Red cattle which graze many of the county’s pastures, Lincolnshire sausages with their rustic texture and rich sage aromatics, and fine lamb and poultry, including ostrich, for whom the county has become a second home.
Grimsby fish is of course legendary but it’s not just a centre for cod and haddock. The local smoked fish was awarded protected geographical indication status by the EU in 2009 and the fish docks are also home many specialist salmon firms and to boats dedicated to the crab and lobster harvest, supplying top quality shellfish to customers all over the continent. There are also a wide range of artisan cheeses, including not just the deliciously peppery Lincolnshire Poacher from Alford but also many others such as Market Rasen’s Lincoln Blue and the Cote Hill range from Osgodby and on the sweeter side of things let’s not forget Lincolnshire plum loaves, each made to the baker’s very own secret special recipe and the centuries old favourite Grantham gingerbread.

LINCOLNSHIRE FINE FOODS
Many of these producers sell in through the network of farm shops which exists throughout the county, making Lincolnshire fine produce and fresh or organic foods available to everyone, whatever their locality. We could go on a lot longer – we haven’t even mentioned the excellent restaurants and hotels which We told our good friends at Seafish about our Lincolnshire Fine Foods feature and asked them if they could suggest a recipe idea that would really celebrate the great taste of Grimsby seafood - and of course they came up with the goods.
Halibut with Goat’s Cheese Mash Prep time: 4 minutes Cooking time: 13-15 minutes Serves 2 Ingredients 2 portions of halibut fillet 250g potatoes 70g goats cheese 70ml milk 1 small red pepper diced 1tbsp baby capers 12 black olives 6 asparagus spears 1 orange Scotch bonnet chilli pepper (thinly sliced) 100ml good quality olive oil Basil leaves 1. Boil the peeled and chopped potatoes for 10-15 minutes. While they are boiling, put the
diced pepper, along with the capers, olives and chilli pepper in a frying pan with the olive oil, place over a gentle heat and allow to tick away for about 5 minutes. 2. Boil or steam the asparagus for about 5 minutes and add to the frying pan. 3. Drain and mash the cooked potatoes adding the goats cheese as you mash them and using enough milk to achieve a creamy mash. Season with salt and pepper. 4. Grill or fry the halibut fillet until just cooked. 5. Spoon the goats cheese mash onto the centre of the plate, place a halibut fillet on top and spoon around the warm peppers, olives, oil, etc. Arrange the asparagus and basil leaves on top or as desired, and serve.
the county has to offer, nor the many craft breweries and wineries or the fabulous bakers, chocolatiers, confectioners and preserve makers – but we’ve said enough to make the case that Lincolnshire is a county that’s all about food and where quality really matters.

Local foodies have some tasty treats in store at Meridian Park, Cleethorpes once again this year as The Lincolnshire Food Festival returns with another mouth watering mix of foods from local, regional and national producers. Last year's event was attended by more than 5000 people and organisers hope to build on that success this year by making the 2014 festival better than ever! The team have been busy working behind the scenes to bring celebrity chefs to the resort once again and are asking all local food producers, caterers and artisan food businesses to get in touch. Already confirmed are the Love Food Roadshow, local hog roast company Hog and Rooster and Lymn Bank Farm Cheese as well as many others. This year's festival takes place on the 6th and 7th September 2014 and if you would like to take part please contact Linda on linda@hpssevents.co.uk or visit the website at www.lincsfoodfest.co.uk

a coat for a boat! I
t’s not often you see a boat in a coat outside of the world of Dr Seuss so it was fascinating to pay a visit to the Grimsby Minster today to take a look at the exhibition that accompanies the visit of the Follow The Herring project. The boat in question is a full size herring wherry decked out in a magnificent blue and red suit and it’s a fantastic sight especially when the sunlight streams in through the church windows and illuminates the sails. There are also several kits of knitted herring and an ocean of underwater creatures and vegetation on display, all setting the scene for this weekend’s performances. The Follow The Herring performance, which tells the story of the herring lassies who followed the herring fleets down the east coast gutting, salting and packing the catch will be performed on June 26th, 27th and 28th. Tickets are still available so for further details or to book contact Lee Beckett on 01472 358610 or visit the Minster website.

Mobility becoming an issue? If you’re beginning to find the stairs a bit difficult then JC Pomfret Construction can offer an alternative to the stress and upheaval of moving home.

Making the most of your existing space! These images from a recent JC Pomfret home adaptation show a former garage converted into a self contained studio apartment consisting of a kitchen/ lounge area, a bedroom and walk in wet room complete with underfloor heating. The studio has gas central heating and everything that you would expect in a top of the range studio apartment and allows a relative to live with independence and comfort while still being close enough to enhance safety and ease worries.
s we get older mobility can become a problem and when it does the first thing many people think about is finding a home that’s better suited to their requirements. Which is great if you really want to move but for many people it can be a lot of unwelcome upheaval and can prove stressful and expensive. At JC Pomfret Construction they take a different view, believing that the first logical step when mobility becomes an issue is to adapt our existing homes to suit our changing needs, for example by creating new bathroom and shower facilities on lower floors, either by adding an extension or by remodelling existing space such as a spare room or garage. JC Pomfret have a wealth of experience and they offer a complete service, starting with your ideas, offering helpful advice and then putting those ideas into practice. They take care of the drawing up of plans and submitting them for official approval then manage the whole project to ensure that everything is done to the most exacting of standards. You don’t necessarily needs a lot of space, the costs can be surprisingly low and a JC Pomfret home adaptation carries the additional advantage that you’re adding value to your property. So when those stairs start to be a pain don’t immediately put up the For Sale signs. Give JC Pomfret a call and see if they can help you adapt and stay in the home you love.

arnival time comes to Cleethorpes on July 19th and this year’s event promises to be a great family day out, filling the streets of the resort with colour, music and fun. Young’s Seafoods are generously supporting the event once again - without their help last year the carnival would have disappeared from the calendar. There’ll be some great acts, including the Cumberland Giants - a huge hit last year - and of course there’ll be lots of local people taking part too! Entries are still being accepted for groups and individuals and you can download an entry form from the website at cleethorpescarnival.co.uk Organisers are encouraging as many schools as possible to get creative and join the Rainbow Of Colour, a walking procession with each school that enters given a rainbow colour to bring to life however they like. Last year saw nearly 100 vehicles and over 1000 pedestrians involved and thousands of people thronged the streets. Over £4000 was raised for local charities and this year the total promises to be even higher so get down to Cleethorpes on July 19th and join in the fun.

Engine Remapping Has Your Vehicle Been Chipped Yet?
motoring 10% increase in power and torque along with added responsiveness, while turbo petrol vehicles can expect 20% more power and 25% more mid range torque. Turbo diesels will see the biggest benefit with up to 30% more power and torque and much improved fuel economy. Vehicles whose engines or exhausts have been modified could also benefit greatly from remapping. So where can you go locally for engine remapping? We recommend our good friend Will Toyne at Lincs VWA - give him a ring and see what a difference a spot of remapping can make to your car!
W
e all want to get the best out of our vehicles, by improving either economy or performance and one way to achieve this is by engine remapping. Remapping is a relatively new idea, made possible by the development of modern engines with ECUs (engine control units) which govern a vehicle’s ignition timing, air/fuel mix and (on turbo cars) can boost pressure. ECUs can also limit speed or revs. When an engine is remapped the garage will use a computer to reset the chip in the ECU, allowing the factory default settings to be overridden. It can make a dramatic difference to the performance of your car. Non turbo petrol engines should see a

NEW MUSIC
Amy Naylor: A Brave Thing
Roger Beard & Richard Papps: The Question EP
Merlin’s Keep: Havelok The Dane
There’s not much doubt who stole the show at the Cleethorpes Folk Festival - step forward the ridiculously talented singer songwriter Amy Naylor whose Sunday afternoon set brought the crowds to their feet. The songs on this album are a mix of folk and pop with nods to contemporary urban music and they feature great melodies and strong lyrics all delivered with a remarkable poise by a performer who is clearly going places. Twelve tracks here and they’re all great but our favourite is As The Sun Rises which reminds us of Juliet Turner. Available via Facebook.
The new offering from the Godfathers of Grimsby Folk finds our heroes in fine fettle, sharing writing and vocal duties on four new songs which deal with subject matter ranging from the history of the Grimsby Chums in the poignant Coddy’s Letter, to the fragility of relationships in People Are Not Granite, a song of love lost. Poet On The Wing is a tribute to the universality of love, while The Questions offers a heartfelt hymn to human dignity and resilience. Roger and Richard can be found on Facebook and they’ll sell you a copy of the EP there.
Havelok the Dane is a folk opera setting of the story of Danish hero Grim and his rescue of the child Havelok. Merlin’s Keep have brought the story to life to remind the current generation of Grimbarians of their heritage and the hero who gave the town its name. Featuring songs, story telling and poetry, it’s part history, part folklore and part magic. The piece was premiered at Grimsby Minster (see image below) and a special limited edition libretto and CD is available to purchase online for £10 plus p&p from www.merlinskeep.co.uk
If you’re a local band or singer with a new album out or a big gig coming up drop us an email and we’ll try to review it either in print or in our online edition.
