An evening of commemoration of The Great War at Grimsby Minster
T
his year is the centenary of the outbreak of The Great War and on Saturday 1st November Grimsby Minster will play host to an evening of commemoration as the voices of the men and women of the First World War are presented by Next Of The Summer Wine productions.
The evening will feature local musicians and writers including Roger Beard, Andy Freeman and Gordon Wilson, joined for the occasion by poets Carolyn Doyley and Tracy Booth and will offer a tapestry of music and words as songs, poems, war time diaries, letters and journals from the trenches and the homefront recall the experiences of both combatants and civilians. The evening will bring together not only the well known words and tunes of wartime writers but also previously unseen and unheard material combining songs and words of the war years with contemporary songs and new poetry, including a new suite of songs and poems inspired by story of The Grimsby Chums.

here’s a surprise in store for anyone who steps into the Hough’s of Lincolnshire offices on Middlethorpe Road, Cleethorpes for the first time. For a moment it’s hard to believe just how many trips, holidays and excursions they have on offer. Not only is the front window covered with announcements, they’re on all the walls too, and in neat piles on the desks and next to the coffee machine. As far as I can see there are no duplicates – they simply are very busy people.

Even with their impressive array of computers it’s a wonder they can keep track of them all. Hough’s (it’s pronounced Hoffs by the way) have been in business for eight years since being founded by Richard (who had twenty years experience as a driver with Appleby’s and Peter Sheffield) and his wife Rosina, who
had been a primary school teacher. Their first project was a five day excursion to the Spital of Glenshee (it’s in Scotland, honest). They put an advert in the paper and by the end of the day it was sold out! Something told them they were on to a winner. Now they’ve got five coaches and they’re all busy pretty much all the time! Until this year they’ve stayed within the UK but Rosina has just passed her International Transport Manager exams so now they’re planning the European leg of the adventure, starting with the famous Christmas markets of Valkenburg plus shopper trips from Folkestone to Calais. Next year will see holidays in France being added to the calendar. And the secret of their success? “Putting the customer first” says Rosina. “And paying attention to detail. We check every destination in advance and we never use feeder coaches. Crossing Lines Driftnet Poets announce a major new project mixing poetry, music, film and dance
L
ocal poetry group Driftnet Poets have announced a new seventeen month project which will encourage local writers to develop their own poetry and bring top poets from the national and international scene to Grimsby. The Crossing Lines project, will involve collaboration with other local writers as well as artists, film makers,
musicians and even burlesque dancers! Driftnet aim to hold performances and workshops for people interested in writing their own poetry and plan to host a weekend poetry festival in spring 2015. “We’re all thrilled about this,” said Maria Garner, who helped secure Arts Council funding in partnership with Linda Ingram. “We presented a strong set of ideas to the Arts Council and this grant gives us the opportunity to see them through and to bring this exciting project to a wide audience.” The launch of the project will be at The Candlelight Cafe event at Grimsby Minster on Friday 5th September. Starting at 7.30pm, the evening will include readings from members of Driftnet plus music from classical guitarist Ron Burbella and local folk duo Honeysuckle. Tickets for this event are £5.00 The project will culminate in October 2015 with a five week art and poetry exhibition at Abbey Walk Gallery, curated by Nick Triplow. And if you’re not sure that poetry is really for you, we’ll leave you with a couple of pieces by Maria Garner and Carolyn Doyley to whet your appetite.

The Visitor Maria Garner Today I had a poem eating from my hand; there it was, waiting at the window full of sharp observations and subtle undertones. It moved in perfect rhythm without even the hint of a half rhyme to support its strong narrative drive. What could I give this beautiful poem? Full stops and commas were met with indifference bordering on disdain. A cliché left over from breakfast did not tempt it. Likewise my well chosen metaphors. Its unusual subject matter aroused my curiosity. I offered a surreal moment. Just as I held it in my palm the poem flew away.

here was an impressive turnout at the Grimsby Minster as Minster Events hosted the first of its Candlelight Cafe events. Musical highlights included some mesmerising classical and flamenco guitar pieces by Hull virtuoso Ron Burbella and folk harmonies from Grimsby duo Honeysuckle, made up of Sue and Sime Naylor. Words were by members of the Driftnet Poets who read selections from their work to an appreciative audience. The event also served as the launch of the Driftnetters’ new project, Crossing Lines, which will see a host of readings, workshops and performances as well as collaborations with local artists, film makers, theatre groups and dancers. There’ll be a weekend literary festival in the spring and a five week exhibition at Abbey walk Gallery curated by Barton novelist Nick Triplow in October 2015. The next Candlelight Cafe will be on Friday 3rd October in the Minster and special guests will be Cleethorpes born poet Anthony Dunn, Artistic Director of the Bridlington Poetry Festival, and Steven Maxson, organist and master of choristers at the Minster, who will be playing a selection of piano pieces. Tickets are £5 and the evening starts at 7.30pm.

He won the Newdigate Prize in 1995 and received an Eric Gregory Award in 2000. He has published three collections of poems, Pilots and Navigators (Oxford University Press 1998), Flying Fish (Carcanet OxfordPoets 2002) and Bugs (Carcanet OxfordPoets 2009), and recently completed his fourth. Antony is a regular tutor for The Poetry School and the

5. Take your time You don’t have to rush anymore, you’re not on the clock. So take time to look around you. Talk to people.
8. Look after yourself It goes without saying that you’re not as young as you were so your health is precious. Regular check ups and always take the full course of the medication!
3. Read books To get ideas or just for the joy of it. Read stuff you would never have read otherwise. Read poetry. Then go for a walk.
6. Play with the kids You don’t have to be sensible anymore. You can do whatever you want to do and nobody can stop you. So play with the

So get it all down in writing (while you still remember it|) and then read it out loud and make them sit and listen. That’ll teach them.

f you’re reasonably fit, have a love of adventure and are in the mood for the trip of a lifetime then you may be just the person that Cleethorpes builder John Pomfret is looking for. John, who is well known locally as an adventurer and a climber who has reached the summit of Everest is looking to recruit team members for a trek to Island Peak in the Himalayas. Expedition members will also have the chance to join in with fundraising activities for GHoPA, the charity for whom John is an adventurous activities co-ordinator. GHoPA (Get Hooked on Positive Activities) is a not for profit social enterprise company which works with socially disadvantaged young people and families in North East Lincolnshire. John, accompanied by Brits Neil Corry and John Hamill and American Craig Longobardi will then attempt to climb Everest itself and then go on to complete the gruelling Everest Ultra Marathon. It sounds like a fantastic experience and you can contact John on the number on the opposite page for further details and for the cost of a place on the trip. Just remember to send us a post card!
Pommy’s trek up Island Peak departs March 17th 2015. The group will make their way to base camp, spend a few days acclimatising and then begin their journey to the summit. First climbed in 1956, Island Peak (or Imja Tse to the locals, is on the southern side of Everest in Nepal. It is one of the best trekking peaks in the world and an ideal introduction to the Himalayas.

s we get older mobility can become a problem and when it does the first thing many people think about is finding a home that’s better suited to their requirements. Which is great if you really want to move but for many people it can be a lot of unwelcome upheaval and can prove stressful and expensive. At JC Pomfret Construction they take a different view, believing that the first logical step when mobility becomes an issue is to adapt our existing
homes to suit our changing needs, for example by creating new bathroom and shower facilities on lower floors, either by adding an extension or by remodelling existing space such as a spare room or garage. espite opening their gates during one of the worst rain storms of the summer, nobody let the weather get them down at the inaugural Cleethorpes Classic Car and Vintage Festival at Meridian Park on 23rd and 24th August. Classic style was the order of the day with a fine collection of vehicles, (including one of the few remaining Lloyd cars which were manufactured in Patrick Street, Grimsby). There was also a wide range of retro fashion on sale, plenty of great music and a sensational evening show by the Cat’s Pyjamas Burlesque Cooperative. All in all a weekend to remember, and one which we’re hoping to see becoming a regular part of the calendar. Pip pip!

STALLINGBOROUGH Open fields on one side, heavy industry on the other -
Stallingb Stallingborough, on the road between Grimsby and Immingham, is a village full of history with its eyes set firmly on the future. It’s mentioned in the Doomsday book, where it’s listed as Stalinburg, and for several centuries after that it was an important trading centre, being granted its own fair and market by Henry III. In Victorian times the village boundaries extended all the way to the river where there was a lighthouse, coastguard and ferry, now all long gone. The glory days may have passed but they have left their mark on the local area. The fields near the church still show signs of the old manor house, home of the Ayscough family, and the church of St Peter and St Paul, built in 1780, has a pleasing Italianate air and the village retains enough individual character to stop it becoming merely another suburb of it’s larger neighbours. The village has a well cared for and prosperous air with a renowned local pub, plenty of smart housing

leethorpes Carnival Parade has been held annually since 1976 and in that time it has raised thousands of pounds for charity but there was a time, not so very long ago when its future for Cleethorpes Carnival Parade looked bleak - in fact organiser Leanor Pidgen of Cleethorpes Events actually announced that the 2012 date would be the last.
“
The day means so much to our community and we feel honoured to have a part in it. Everyone at Young’s enjoys being involved with the Carnival and working closely with our good friends at Cleethorpes Events.
But then Young’s Seafood Limited stepped in to help with sponsorship, the Parade was saved, and it goes from strength to strength. For Young’s the Carnival is an essential element of the Cleethorpes calendar, both for the pleasure it brings to local people and for bringing visitors to the area. They see its importance to the community and they are committed to ensuring it has a sustainable long term future.
This year’s event was the biggest yet with over eighty floats, thousands of participants, a huge green caterpillar and some old ladies on souped up shopping trolleys and much more besides. as Safety Week 2014 runs from 15th – 21st September. It’s aim is to raise awareness of gas safety and the importance of taking care of your gas appliances. It is co-ordinated by Gas Safe Register, the official list of engineers who are legally allowed to work on gas. Badly fitted and poorly serviced gas appliances can cause gas leaks, fires, explosions and carbon monoxide poisoning. Every year thousands of people in the UK are victims of carbon monoxide poisoning. It is a highly poisonous gas. You can’t see it, taste it or smell it, but it can kill quickly with no warning. By taking care of your gas appliances properly you are taking care of your home and your loved ones. Follow these few simple checks to keep you and your family safe.

Gas appliances should be safety checked once a year and serviced regularly by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Check your engineer is Gas Safe registered. You can find & check engineers at GasSafeRegister.co.uk Check your engineer’s Gas Safe Register ID card. Make sure they are qualified for the work you need doing. You can find this information on the back of the card. Check for warning signs your appliances aren’t working correctly eg lazy yellow or orange flames instead of crisp blue ones, black marks on or around the appliance and too much condensation in the room. Know the six signs of carbon monoxide poisoning – headaches, dizziness, breathlessness, nausea, collapse and loss of consciousness. Have an audible carbon monoxide alarm. This will alert you if there is carbon monoxide in your home.

“I realised I was good at sharing work and enabling others and soon that began to take more and more of my time” A profile of textile artist and teacher Jan Dowson Words by Josie-Anne Gray
J
an Dowson is an award winning textile artist, a founder member of the FABRIK group and an inspirational teacher of textiles and mixed media as Creative Arts Co-ordinator at the Thrunscoe Centre. She has enjoyed success as an exhibitor locally and nationally, both on her own and as part of FABRIK. She is also a teacher, part time at first, but she soon found that her role as an artist had begun to be overtaken by that of mentor. She had found a new vocation and for the past seventeen years Jan has been focused on Community Learning at Thrunscoe, working with students over nineteen. The centre offers courses in the creative arts up to City and Guilds Level 3. When she talks about her students her pride in their achievements is evident. “We’ve had four Gold Medal winners and this year another student has been nominated and our adults have a real passion for learning. Many of them travel a long way to the centre because so many other areas have cut their creative arts programmes. North East Lincolnshire is a beacon not just for textile arts but also for creativity in general. The area is bursting with talent.” It’s not just Jan’s students who are award winners. In 2013 she was nominated for the City and Guilds Gold Award for teaching and she won in the textiles category. Afternoon tea and a presentation from the Princess Royal at Buckingham Palace
followed although what was most moving about the experience was reading the testimonials from students past and present. “They said wonderful things and I have a disc with all their testimonials recorded on it that I treasure.” 2013 was certainly Jan’s year. She was runner up for the Guild of Broderers Beryl Dean Award and enjoyed a magical presentation evening in St Paul’s Cathedral with the Duchess of Gloucester and Giles Brandreth. Jan’s inspirational powers as a teacher were in evidence at the recent exhibition of her students’ work at the Thrunscoe Centre, the theme of which was women’s lives. Learners were encouraged to look at and discuss serious issues such as human trafficking and FGM and this was reflected in the work. The result was a very grown up exhibition that was moving and powerful as well as beautiful. The exhibition has led to big things for Jan and her students with some of their work has been selected to be part of a major exhibition. Ebb and Flow, curated by the 62 Group of Textile Artists opens on Saturday 13th September in the Fishing Heritage Centre (3pm) and Grimsby Minster (5pm). Jan’s students have been involved with Communities Together at the Mela events and she is always looking for ways to inspire new learners. She is certainly keeping the great heritage of arts and crafts, particularly stitching, alive and vibrant here in NE Lincolnshire and her enthusiasm in infectious. After talking to her for just an hour I returned to my own sewing basket with my inspiration renewed.

If your wallpaper is peeling, the wall is damp to the touch or you have damaged skirting boards, wet floorboards, crumbling plaster or paint peeling there’s a good chance that you have rising damp. Rising damp is drawn upwards by capillary action. Don’t neglect it even if it only seems minor. You need to catch it early before it becomes a bigger
problem. It could be something simple to deal with like bridging plaster or having your plaster chopped off, inserting a damp course rendering and plastering and fitting new skirting boards, which is not as bad as it sounds. Penetrating damp can also be an issue. It can be caused by faulty guttering, a roofing problem or driving rain on your walls. Symptoms include damp patches on walls and ceilings and again it’s something which may be fixable quite cheaply and easily if you catch it quick. Whatever type of damp your property suffers from it’s important to get it checked out by an expert. Obviously I’d love it if everybody came to us at DSB and we think we’ve got a pretty good reputation but it’s always a good idea to get a two or three quotes before undertaking major repairs. Whoever you use the most important thing is to nip the problem in the bud – don’t let it develop into a major issue – that will just add to the trouble and expense.

Farewell To The Tax Disc, The Slip Of Paper We All Love To Hate
N
inety three years after they were introduced the paper vehicle tax disc is to be abolished this October. That doesn’t mean no more vehicle tax of course, just that all the details will be stored on DVLA computers and no more discs will be issued. Vehicle duty was first charged in 1889 and tax discs arrived in 1921 – that’s thirteen years before the driving test and forty years before the MOT. They were originally printed on plain grey paper in black ink and without perforations. Each disc bore the four symbols of the United Kingdom, the Thistle, Shamrock, Daffodil and Rose, appeared on the face of the Tax Disc, as well as the corners of the counterfoil.
Over the years they’ve seen some major changes of design, mostly with a view to preventing forgery. Coloured diagonal year stripes were introduced in the 1930s. Perforated edges started in 1938. There were even special farmers’ discs which bore a big letter F issued in the run up to WW2. In 1961 the design was changed to include the coloured bars and half tones with which we are familiar today but it wasn’t an immediate success and there were unanticipated problems when the 1962 disc, when seen from a distance, looked so like the label from a Guinness bottle and had to be withdrawn because so many people were using them instead. The biggest change will be that from October 1st 2014 when you buy a used car the vehicle tax will no longer be transferred with the vehicle, so when you buy a car you will need to tax it before you use it. You can do that through any of the usual channels but it must be done straight away. The rules are even more important for sellers because they are the ones who are legally responsible for ensuring that the new system is set in motion by sending document V5C (the vehicle registration certificate or logbook) to the DVLA. They will then receive a refund for any full calendar months left on the vehicle tax. Autumn Is On The Way Take Extra Care When Driving In The Rain
E
very year the arrival of autumn, bringing with it those unpredictable showers we all love so much, causes a host of accidents on the road because people simply underestimate how dangerous wet roads can be. We all know that ice is slippery but a bit of wet? Here Peter Rodger, chief examiner of the Institute of Advanced Motoring shares his tips for safe driving in rainy conditions. Before you set off, set your heater controls. Rain can makes the windows mist up in seconds. You don’t want to be fiddling with controls when you should be concentrating on the road. Visibility is the key! See and be seen. Put your lights on – as a rule of thumb, whenever you need to use your wipers you should also turn your dipped headlights on, and before overtaking put your wipers on their fastest setting. Keep your eyes on the road ahead. And plan your driving so that you can brake, accelerate and steer smoothly – harsh manoeuvres will unbalance the car.
In the rain speed is a killer. Slow down. In the rain stopping distance is at least doubled. Giving yourself more space also helps to avoid spray, especially when following a large vehicle. Avoid using cruise control in the wet. You need to pay more attention to the road surface conditions and alter your speed gently. Get a grip on your steering. Strong winds can unsettle your car and change your direction of travel. Grip your steering wheel firmly and be ready for the effects of the wind on other road users, particularly motorcyclists and flat-sided vehicles like lorries. Have your vehicle properly serviced. Probably the most important of all. Find a garage that you really trust (there are several on these pages that we are delighted to recommend) and get brakes, tyres and the rest checked over. It won’t cost a fortune and it could save your life. That’s got to be a bargain, whatever the weather is like.

A new survey by the AA has revealed that each year nearly 40% of drivers are dangerously distracted to the point where they narrowly avoid an accident. And the worst culprits for making us take our eye off the road? Well strangely
it’s adults not kids and especially adults who twiddle with the radio. Then it’s the satnav, either setting or listening. Eating and drinking are high in the lists as are all kinds of communications equipment, whether used legally or not. So the moral is that if you want to arrive in one piece, put the grown ups in the back where they can’t reach the radio, buy a map book, eat before you leave and don’t touch that phone. That’s sorted then.
