THEATRE
Lord, What Fools These Mortals Be A Midsummer Night’s Dream Caxton Theatre 26th April 2016
T
he Caxton’s don’t usually do Shakespeare - the last time was fifty years ago for the 400th anniversary of his birth - but if this excellent and funny production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream is anything to go by it’s very much to be hoped that an occasional bit of bardery will appear on their programme from time to time in future.
Left and clockwise from top - Gemma Dodds as Titania with her fairy retinue; Byron Young & Ryan Taylor as Oberon and Puck; Gemma Dodds as Titania and Chris Dempsey as Bottom.
Director Cathy Bennett-Ryan wisely chooses to cut some of the more ponderous material from a text which can drag a little sometimes, and to play the piece for laughs and she is very fortunate to have a cast who have the comedy chops to hit the audience’s funny bone every time. Chris Dempsey as Nick Bottom is outstanding, and although it’s fair to say that whoever gets this role has a high proportion of the best lines in the play, his mix of spivvy arrogance and bewildered libidinousness is a delight and gives the other mechanicals in the play within a play a strong centre against which to develop their own parts. Bottom’s love scene with Sam Brierley’s Francis Flute/Thisbe is almost painfully funny and awkward as is Phil Whitfield’s Snug/lion. One of the problems facing any version of the Dream is how to render the four seething brained Athenian lovers who find themselves lost in the woods at night and subject to the tormenting of the fairies. Played straight they can be awfully dull and a bit samey but here Kieron James (Lysander), Jack Scott (Demetrius), Hayley Brown (Helena) and Rebecca Holland as Hermia manage to make them each a discernible individual and to make the most of the play’s potential for physical comedy. Hermia’s repeated lunges across the stage towards her rival looked particularly vengeful and while Helena taunting and tactical withdrawals kept the tension high and the laughs flowing. Although the comedy is very much to the fore there are still some more serious
themes to be teased out from the performance. Not least that if this is a play about love then it is at very least ambivalent about its subject matter. Of the five couples involved, (if we count Pyramus and Thisbe who do not emerge well from their relationship), one is doomed by law to die, one is strictly one sided, one is no longer speaking because of a custody dispute and one is only getting married because the female half lost a fight. It doesn’t bode well for the future and subsequent events involving love potions just seem to make it clear that love isn’t always what the romantic poets would have us believe. In Athens it’s a treacherous and capriciously random force of nature that seems to do considerably more harm than good and as the text reminds us truth, reason and love keep little company together nowadays. Not much changed there then. Honourable mentions go to Byron Young and Gemma Dodds who double up as Theseus and Hippolyta and Oberon Titania and to members of Caxton Youth Theatre who played the tie dyed rainbow fairies. First prize for scene stealing goes to fourteen year old Ryan Taylor for a terrifically agile and knowing motley clad Puck. You’ve still got time to catch this excellent Dream because it runs until Saturday 30th April. More details can be found at www.caxtontheatre.com

le vient Ă Beverley
T
his year’s Tour de Yorkshire ran from Friday 29th April to Sunday 1st May, beginning in Beverley and finishing in Scarborough and covering 520km (that’s 323 miles in English money) along the way. And of course at each town they visited they turned the streets blue and yellow, with bunting, flags, face paint and of course dozens of bicycles hanging from trees, perched on rooftops or hung above shop doorways. We went across to the start at Beverley to take a look at what happens when dozens of cyclists, hundreds of crew and a couple of dozen huge busses take over the centre of a small mediaeval market town, and to soak up some of the atmosphere of the big day.

Shed building T at the Minster for school pupils

here's a terrific exhibition on at Grimsby Minster at the moment called Deities At the Bottom Of The Garden, which features a collection of gorgeous miniature sheds, created by artist Richard Bartle, each decorated on the inside as a place of religious worship for one of the worlds major religions. As well as delighting visitors to the Minster the exhibition is also featuring in the schoolwork of local children who have been visiting the Minster and taking the opportunity to build sheds of their own to commemorate their visit. The schools workshops are aimed at Year 3 to Year 6 and cover elements of the RE, Art and British Values syllabuses and have been supported with funding from the David Ross Foundation. We went down to visit a workshop with pupils from Macaulay Primary School who were clearly having a great time learning about the world's diverse faiths and devising their own symbols to put inside their sheds. All were agreed that they'd had a great time, and many of them intended to get their parents to bring them down for a second visit. If you haven't been to see Deities At The Bottom Of The Garden yet then we highly recommend a visit. It's on until May 21st, admission free.

LOCAL HISTORY
29
In the summer of 1904 one of the most famous showmen in the world camped with his huge travelling show on the edge of town. Nearby a party was getting underway to celebrate the opening of the new Grant Thorold park. It was a windy day and what happened next is one of the strangest incidents in the history of the town.
I
When Buffalo Bill came to the rescue in The Wild East Marsh
magine the astonishment on the face of Mr. S Revell, the proprietor of the Dock Dining Rooms on Cleethorpe Road, Grimsby, on one particular morning in the year of 1891, when several real Wild West Indians and a few Mexicans came walking through the door of his business, sat down and then asked what was on the menu? And the reason for this amazing event is situated somewhere out in the middle of the River Humber. After a successful tour of the Continent, The Buffalo Bill Wild West Show is now lying at anchor very close to the Grimsby Dock but because of the strict quarantine laws of the day they need permission to come ashore. So Mr. Loft, the quarantine officer of the day was rowed out to the waiting ship in order to survey the situation. In particular there was concern as to one of the Bison on board the vessel, which had not only recently given birth to its young but, it was also mentioned, had killed three men. It looked like Mr. Loft was going to have his work cut out but to his great satisfaction, Mr William Cody, or Buffalo Bill as he was known, was given permission to bring his entourage ashore. As soon as the ship docked the task of unloading a Wild West Extravaganza began, at Tower Island (close to the Dock Tower). There was an almost uncountable amount of animals and more than one Stagecoach and they were loaded onto more than forty five wagons supplied by the Manchester, Sheffield
and Lincolnshire Railway. The destination for the show was Leeds, so while the animals and a couple of
the docks hoping to catch William 'Buffalo Bill' Cody or a look at a real life ‘red indian’ and many people were heard to say how “Quite magnificent they looked in their dress.” The show was soon thundering its way through the East Marsh and out of town but not before the Wild West Show’s management gave their thanks to the local workforce who had helped to bring the show on shore. At the end of June 1904 Buffalo Bill returned to Grimsby once more only this time he was here to entertain the people of the town. Five special trains, made up of more than sixty long American style carriages were shunted into the West Marsh sidings, sixteen of which were for sleeping. It was said that the combined length of the trains was almost a mile. By five the unloading had begun starting with some two hundred heavy horses and just Stagecoaches were being unloaded before six o’clock an Indian was seen more than a few of the Red Indians emerging from his sleeping quarters decided to go and take a look around wrapped in a blanket. He was only and then look for something to eat. the first of many for in less than five Soon there were quite a few faces minutes there were more than three looking through the Dock Dinning hundred Indians, cowboys and others Room window and also quite a heading their way the old Artillery decent crowd of people gathering on field at Clee Road, Cleethorpes. dining tent to accommodate more than 500 people was erected and ten cooks set to work. Within two hours two more tents and stabling for five hundred horses had been erected and a mad scramble for tickets had begun. There was just one minor snag. Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show was going to coincide with another major
event, the opening of Grant Thorold Park. It seemed like bad luck but as it turned out it was serendipity itself. On the day of the opening a large marquee was erected in the park but during the course of the day the wind got up and it soon became clear that the structure was about to blow away. Word reached the Wild West Show and they immediately sent Fred Hutchinson, one of Buffalo Bill’s managers and some canvas men to the rescue. In the interests of safety it was soon decided to take down the Marquee and take the luncheon in the open air and within minutes the canvas men had very quickly and expertly stored the whole Marquee away. The Wild West show was a roaring success, covering a staggering one and a half acres, the audience went on to witness a show which contained more than 300 people on horseback, sharp shooting and lasso displays and, to great applause, Buffalo Bill himself, giving a riding and a shooting display. Nobody could have imagined however that a surprise treat that came with the show would stir up the whole country
… that treat was popcorn, and it was so popular that in the year after the show came to the country more than three tons were sold! The Deadwood Stage coming under attack was also very well received feature, as was the spectacular recreation of the fall of General Custer, at The Battle of the Little Big Horn, with Sitting Bull’s real life son, Willie, playing the part of his Father. Almost as soon as the show had ended, everything was quickly packed away and very soon the memory of Buffalo Bill’s appearance in Grimsby would begin to fade into the mists of time, as would the setting for this amazing spectacular all of which took place on a bare looking corner at Wellington Street and Park Street at a place called Fiveways. The Peoples would like to thanks the Grimsby and District Archive Club for permission to republish this article. The Club’s website can be found at www.gycodhead.co.uk If there are any other local historians out there who’d like to see some of their work in print we’d be very glad to receive submissions.

hen Grant Thorold Library closed its doors last year it looked like another important community facility would be lost for good but instead the premises were taken over by Care4All and Your Community Hub who have not only kept the library running (and signed up nearly 300 new users in the process) but have added a clothing boutique, a cyber cafe and a display area for local crafters to sell their wares. Computers are available to use free for the first half hour and for 50p per hour after that and there’s a direct link to the Job Centre so people can check on vacancies quickly and easily. There’s also a wide range of activity groups including a senior citizens IT club on Tuesday mornings, Family History (every Friday morning - £2 per session) and a kids story group on Tuesdays between 10am and 11am. Future plans include new cafe premises at the back of the building with an ice cream stall for those long, hot summer days and in addition to all their good work indoors Care4All have also been awarded £15,000 of government funding for the creation of a pocket park in which will feature flowers, trees and a pond and will provide a focal point for children and adults looking to enjoy proximity to nature in an urban environment. The park will be named after Buffalo Bill in honour of the all American hero who saved the day all those years ago. Care4All also provide services such as Meals On Wheels, delivering hundreds of hot meals to people all over the town every day, Personal Assistant Support Solutions and the catering for the new Strand Court Extra Care Housing facility. If you’d like to get involved with Care4All as a volunteer you can contact them through their website or on Facebook. You’ll be made very welcome and maybe you can do your bit to help commemorate the day Buffalo Bill rode to the rescue on the East Marsh.

WITH HOLISTIC & BEAUTY THERAPIES
YOU HAVE TO BE ABLE TO SEE PAST THE HYPE
SAYS KATE SMITH OF DE-LOVELY SALON
T
here’s a lot of hype around the beauty and therapy industries,” says Kate Smith, proprietor of De-Lovely Salon on Waltham Rd, Scartho. “You have to study the literature, learn to read between the lines and talk to people who really know, to find out what really works and what is just PR people’s spin and exaggeration.” Or else you find a salon that you trust to do the research for you. All the treatments at De-Lovely have been thoroughly checked out by Kate to make sure that they meet with the client’s expectations. “It’s important to distinguish between holistic and beauty therapies”, she continues. “Holistic therapies like hot stone treatments, massage, reflexology and aromatherapy can make you feel better by restoring the body to its natural balance.” “Beauty therapies like facials, manicures, waxing, tinting and pedicures can make us feel better about ourselves. From June we’ll be offering radio frequency therapies that help smooth and tighten the skin by stimulating natural renewal of collagen and we offer a range of pamper sessions if you really want to treat yourself. Everybody loves to be pampered. We like to call this a little bit of normal luxury. It’s about reminding yourself that you’re special.” In fact there’s such a wide range of treatments available at De-Lovely that the best plan is to pop in next time you’re in Scartho. Kate’s staff, who are all fully qualified with years of experience, will make you feel right at home and with treatments by Germaine de Capuccini and Salt Of The Earth and waxing by Adam & Eve there’s bound to be something that will leave you feeling delovely.

sculptures, installations, videos and paintings about society, current affairs, religion and politics. Originally created to respond to the former church building housing 20-21 Visual Arts Centre in Scunthorpe, the piece consists of twelve scale model garden sheds, each with an interior modelled on the worship place of a different world religion. Each sculpture has been extensively researched and is lovingly hand crafted, wherever possible using the same materials that would be used in their life size counterparts. Details include hand woven rugs, painted ceilings, hand turned furniture and glass light fittings. The work reduces the usually grand architecture of churches to a more private space, inviting the viewer to make their own minds up about what it is to have faith and the differences and similarities between differing beliefs and cultures. Deities at the Bottom of the Garden runs until 21st May, Tuesday to Saturday 9.30am to 2.30pm in the Lady Chapel in Grimsby Minster. Admission free.
December 2016 to January 2017 THE CHANDELIER OF LOST EARRINGS by the artists Sagar and Campbell The chandelier stands 2.5m tall a sculpture made from over 3,000 single earrings donated by owners who have lost the other half of the pair. The women who contributed items to the project also shared, via letters, the story attached to it, revealing why the earrings were so meaningful to them and these stories have become part of the artwork’s legacy.
March to April 2017 ORDINALIA by the artist Tracey Holland Tracey works with photography, film and collage to create site specific installations that explore the links between science, mythology, religion and history. Ordinalia is a film triptych shown in three large maritime lanterns surrounded by seven smaller film loops on a variety of boat and train lamps.

We’ve pointed out before that Grimsby Sewing and Knitting is one of those TARDIS-like shops that seem to be bigger inside than out – well now it’s even more true because proprietors Paul and Linda Haynes have expanded their empire to include the shop next door – giving them four shop widths of space to fill with top quality haberdashery. The new shop is to be exclusively devoted to wool but they’ll still be stocking essential supplies for needlecrafts of all kinds with machines by Brother and Janome alongside a rainbow selection of threads, needles and all you’ll ever need to finish your perfect project. They’re always happy to give advice, so if you’re new to the world of woolcraft just drop in one day for a chat and they’ll sort you out with all you need to get started on a project that’s affordable and achievable too!

First Class Service: 10 top tips Great customer service is one of those things that we all recognise but find hard to define. So here are a few suggested ground rules for what makes it a pleasure doing business with companies that offer first class service. 1. BE PATIENT Even if customers seem to take forever over the smallest decision just bear in mind that you’re being paid to be there. Great service will beat fast service every time so let things progress at the customers’ pace or they’ll be out that door quick as the proverbial flash.

7. BE PERCEPTIVE Learn to read your customers. Body language is important here but you won’t always be face to face. Look and listen for subtle clues about their current mood, patience level, personality and you’ll go far in keeping your customer interactions positive.
2. LISTEN This doesn’t just mean look as though you’re listening. It means actually listen to what the customer is saying. Follow their cues and pay attention to their body language as well. Is there something they’re not saying that you need to know? 3. COMMUNICATE CLEARLY Concentrate on getting across the information that customer needs to make an informed decision. Don’t hold back on anything essential but bear in mind that they don’t necessarily need your opinions. 4. EXPERTISE Whatever it is that you’re selling, know it inside out and back to front so you can answer any questions the customer might have. You don’t have to be able to build it from scratch – just be able to answer questions that a user might ask. 5. POSITIVITY The way you express yourself, the vocabulary you use, your overall
REPAIRS & SERVICING
8. BE CALM Even when customers are unreasonable or rude don’t let yourself be drawn into responding in kind. Be goal oriented and keep your eyes on the job in hand. demeanour – they can all make a huge difference to your interactions with your customers. Be upbeat – try to make the decision process into something you can all feel good about. 6. ACTING However good you are, however good the product is .... some people are just miserable, grumpy and obnoxious. Develop a thick skin and learn to make it look as though you’re enjoying their company.
9. BE PERSUASIVE You’re there to do a job – to sell stuff. Good customer service doesn’t mean you don’t want the sale, after all your commission may depend on it. So go ahead and make that sale. Being able to close the deal is a vital part of customer service. 10. KNOW WHEN TO BACK OFF Some people don’t want to be helped. Learn to recognise them and give them some space. When they need help they’ll come to you. Be too attentive and you’ll just scare them off!

At a time when running a small business is getting more and more difficult Ken McQuoid of Kensway Blinds puts their success down to one simple rule: “Look after your customers the best you possibly can.” That’s the golden rule because at a time when people often turn to the Internet and the big corporates first, it’s excellent service with a smile that will bring them back to local firms they can trust. “Not everybody has the time or the ability to fit their own blinds,” he explains, “and many customers like to deal with someone approachable that they can speak to directly. They know that when they ring Kensway they will always find a friendly person to talk to, who will arrange for one off our team to go and see them at a time to suit them. That way they can see what their options are, with no pressure, in the comfort of their own homes.”

Fastline Shellfish
Fastline sell top quality Lincolnshire coast shellfish, (caught each day by their own vessel, the MV Sweetwaters), from their premises on the North Wall. They’re experts in the preparation of crab meat and always have lobsters available, both for the public and trade. Shellfish has a reputation for being difficult to cook but proprietor Jenny Kenyon is always happy to advise. “Many of our customers are unsure about how to prepare shellfish when they first come in to the shop” she explains, “but it’s easier than you might think and once people have tried it once they’re likely to become regular customers.” The public are always welcome as are chefs, hoteliers and restauranteurs who wish to offer their customers the very best fresh crab, lobster and whelks. The shop is open 8am-2pm so if you’re after the best then you need look no further than Fastline.
Proprietor Kath Summers operates a no pressure policy in her shop and customers are welcome to take their time, to try on as many of the costumes as they like until they find one that exactly suits them. That’s important because there’s nothing worse than spending an evening dressed as Harry Potter when you really wanted to be Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz. And if you’re a fan of the wonderful world of superheroes and comic books then make a note in your diary for April 23rd when Twinkles will be hosting a live window display by the Grimsby Heroes, in aid of meningitis charities. There’ll be plenty of photo ops and autographs so bring the kids down to see their favourites!

DSB Damp Proofing The trouble with water is that we all need it but we need it in just the right places. Anywhere else and it’s the homeowner’s worst enemy. Damp problems arise where there is excess moisture in the structure of a building. If left unchecked they can destroy the fabric of your home and your treasured possessions but if caught early they can often be sorted out without great expense. One thing is for sure though, left untreated damp will always get worse. DSB Damp Proofing are David Stiles and Steve Burrows and they offer a wide range of specialist damp proofing services as well as plastering and treatments for dry rot and woodworm. Their service is personal and friendly and they’re always happy to give free no obligation quotations and good honest advice that you can trust.

HOMES AND GARDENS QUALITY & SERVICE WON’T CHANGE
FROM FATHER TO SON AT INSPIRATIONS
T
THE FIREPLACE EXPERTS
hey’ve established an outstanding reputation for value and service at their premises on Cleethorpes High Street but there’s going to be a change at the top at Inspirations, the fireplace experts, because founder Tony Miller has been bought out by his son Ryan. Ryan’s no stranger to the world of fireplaces – he’s been working for his dad as a fitter for six years, but stepping up to take the reins will be a big new challenge. “It was important to me to buy my dad out”, he explains, “rather than just be given the business. My dad wouldn’t do that anyway, it’s not his style”. This gets a nod of agreement from Tony. “It’s true”, he says. “By investing his own money in the business Ryan is making a commitment to make a real success of the place. People value what they buy much more than what they are given.” Ryan plans to continue to build on the reputation for excellence which Tony has established over the years – by concentrating on quality and service. Inspirations don’t do cheap and cheerful, preferring instead to offer quality products that look great and last for years like fires by Valor and Flavel and top class surrounds including limestone models by Newman, marble by Caterham and timber by GB Mantels. They’re also one of the few firms to offer a free on site survey before they sell you a fire to make sure that it’s exactly right for your home. After all, as Ryan says “What’s the point of spending good money on a fire and fireplace that have to be replaced after a few years? The products we sell will stay looking great and keeping your home warm for a long time to come.” Inspirations are at 17 High Street, Cleethorpes next door to Rio Clothing. Great for the kids to play on or for practicing your putting. Perfect for a barbecue or just for lazing away the long hot summer days. Gorgeous just to admire, surrounded by deep beds of colour. Is there any thing more English than a perfectly cared for lawn?
KEEP ON THE GRASS
HOMES AND GARDENS The concept of the lawn originated in Europe where the mild and wet climate is particularly suited to grass growing and seems to have derived from the mediaeval habit of cutting down all the trees around a castle or other fortification so as to remove hiding places for attackers to use. By the 16th century their use had become almost exclusively ornamental although they were more commonly planted with chamamile or thyme than with grass. It took another hundred years for turf to become popular and having large well kept lawns was a sign of great wealth because of numbers of gardeners required to keep them trimmed. Paintings from the European Renaissance of the 15th century show private ornamental lawns and by the 16th century, elaborate formal gardens were an essential feature of the homes of the elite. The impulse that made the lawn popular for smaller and less grand homes was probably the Victorian fashion for outdoor games, particularly golf, cricket, bowls, croquet, badminton and of course tennis, all of which require a smooth
surface, hard wearing enough to be played on but forgiving enough that contact with the ground does not inevitably lead to bloodshed. The first mechanical lawn mower was invented by Edwin Beard Budding in 1830, allowing extensive use of mowed grass for less affluent people and by 1890 mass production of mechanical mowers made them available to the public at an affordable price. And so the lawn spread into suburbia and twentieth century inventions such as weed free grass seed and selective weed killers helped to make them viable in small sizes and with much less work than had formally been required. By the 1950s a patch of grass was an essential part of any garden. The new inventions also helped redefine what was lawn and what was a weed. Clover, for example, had always been a welcome part of the lawn because it put nitrogen into the soil, which benefitted the grass. With the invention of selective weed killers (which killed clover because of its leaf area) the plant was redefined as a weed and its elimination as a benefit. Of course nowadays with robot

MAPLES
f you’re looking for the perfect plant to create a focal point in your garden then you should take a look at the Japanese Maple.
They’re the perfect choice of tree for any small, compact or courtyard garden and will put on a show throughout the year, starting as soon as foliage unfurls in spring and continuing until their autumn transformation, when they shimmer in shades of gold and bronze before their leaves eventually fall. There are lots of varieties of Japanese Maple including members of the species Acer japonicum, Acer palmatum, Acer shirasawanum and others but what they all have in common is a natural shape and growing habit that makes them an ideal choice of small tree for gardens or growing in large patio pots. Their leaf shapes, sizes and colours vary immensely. Many have a broad palm shape, but these are often divided and dissected into the most delicate and intricate of forms. Add to this their wide range of colours, from deep greens to yellow, gold, purple or even variegated patterns and you have huge variety to choose from. And once you’ve started with Japanese maples you’ll find that you’ll want to add new varieties to your collection until you have an acer arboretum of your very own. Top maples for any garden include Acer palmatum ‘Bloodgood', Acer palmatum ‘Osakazuki', Acer palmatum ‘Sango-Kaku' and Golden Shirasawanum maple (Acer shirasawanum ‘Aureum') but you’ll find your own favourite. Maples prefer a sheltered site where trees are protected from late spring frosts, cold winds and scorching summer sun and well drained soil containing plenty of compost to lock in moisture and ensure the ground never dries out. For growing in containers choose large and stable terracotta pots with several drainage holes in their base. Line the pots with a sheet of plastic before filling with compost to reduce water loss through the sides. They need space to flourish and are frequently planted in combination with azalea, ferns, flowering cherries and plums, hydrangeas and wisteria.

“The best acoustics in the area”
The Central Hall Grimsby’s home of real music
F
irst opened in 1936, Grimsby Central Hall is the oldest surviving continuously in use concert venue in North East Lincolnshire and yet, for many, remains an undiscovered gem. Step through the somewhat featureless doors in Duncombe Street and, like crossing the threshold of the Tardis, an expanded world unravels before you. You’ll encounter a 700 seat auditorium that retains original art deco features and offers the finest acoustics in the area. If you place your ear to the wall, you may just hear the lingering echoes of some legendary performers. During its 75 year history, the Central Hall has hosted concerts by an amazing array of world class artists, reflecting a diversity of entertainment - from swing bands to brass bands, rock groups to classical recitals, jazz, choral, orchestral and stage musicals. From John Lee Hooker to Adam and The Ants and from Iron Maiden to Slade by way of Bucks Fizz, Def Leppard, Saxon, The Stray Cats and many more, some of the biggest names in popular music have played this fine old venue which is why they like to call themselves the home of real music. You can find out more about what’s on at The Central Hall at www.grimsbycentralhall.org or via Facebook.

Beware Of The
Smombies!
T
he AA have warned drivers to be aware of the rise of a new kind of road hazard - the pedestrian who is so intent on their mobile phone conversation they simply step out into the road, regardless of traffic - the Smombie (see what they did there?). According to their research most drivers have had experience of a smombie near miss and the creatures are thought be responsible for between 15 and 20 accidents a day, as insurers increasingly see explanations such as - ‘Person on phone stepped out, wasn’t looking’ and ‘He walked into the side of the car’ Experts are advising caution but suggest that using a sharpened spike to destroy the creatures brains is probably going too far. The smombie phenomenon is just part of a wider trend towards the use of communication technology while on the move. We’ve got so used to it nowadays we barely notice the businessman crossing city streets while checking

emails, the cyclist or jogger getting carried away to Adele or the driver plugged into Jonas Blue & Dakota’s ‘Fast Car’. Accident experts warn that these types of situation can lead to unintentional blindness or divided attention which poses great risks for road safety. It’s not limited to the UK however. In Antwerp, Belgium, the problem is so severe that special ‘text walking lanes’ have been introduced for those using mobile phones and in San Francisco phone free areas have been designated. Lawmakers in Arkansas and New York are trying to pass laws to ban pedestrians from using their cell phones while crossing the street but all of these efforts have so far proved to be of limited effectiveness. The internet remains full of clips of people falling into fountains or off railway platforms because they were using the mobile devices. The phenomenon has also been described as

Smartphone Oblivion. According to the AA “When on the move our brains have much to take in and using technological gadgets means that we can’t
always concentrate on so many things at once. This is when we walk into traffic because we don’t hear the truck or drive cocooned from the outside world.”

ARTS In addition to publishing a print edition of The Peoples we also have a web edition, available at www.divapublications.co.uk and through Facebook, which we use for publishing articles and reviews that we couldn’t fit in print. We’re always glad to come along and review events and here’s our coverage of Joe McElderry as Joseph at The Auditorium.
A Dazzling Coat Of Many Colours Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat Grimsby Auditorium April 12th 2016
I
t was a splendid night at the Auditorium on Tuesday as a new revival of Joseph, directed and produced by Bill Kenwright, came to town, bursting with energy and full of great tunes, holding the audience spellbound and building to a terrific climax with almost the whole Auditorium up and dancing. The first Lloyd Webber and Rice musical to be performed publicly Joseph isn’t a perfect piece of work but it had enough original melodies among the pastiche, and sufficient dry wit to show that the fledgling team had the potential to be something special. In a show whose main schtick is wilful anachronism Rice cracks some great jokes, not just with an Elvis Pharaoh and calypso Canaanites but also with sharp wordplay like Joseph’s explanation of the fat cows thin cows dream “All these things you saw in your pyjamas, Were a long range forecast for your farmers.” Got to love that. Joe McElderry approached the role of Joseph with huge enthusiasm and if anyone had any doubts about the vocal qualities of TV talent show contestants they were settled right from the start, both by his opening rendition of Any Dream Will Do and by the arrival of Lucy Kay as the narrator. (Note for those who don’t watch McElderry won the X-Factor in 2009, seeing off Olly Murs and Stacey Solomon in the final while Kay is a classically trained singer who was runner up in last year’s Britain’s Got Talent.)
Special mention too to Emilianos Stamatakis who made the most of his scene stealing role as The Pharaoh and to Henry Metcalfe who doubled up as Jacob and Potiphar. Staging, costumes and choreography were all excellent and a special mention should go to the sixty or so young performers from Stagecoach Theatre School who had worked hard for three months under the direction of Diana Whitworth to be ready for a show whose set they didn’t see until the afternoon of the showday! How did it feel to be on the stage with Joe McElderry? Fantastic seemed to be the universal response. “It’s been great” said Maisie Bebbington, 14, “and it’s made me much more confident. It’s something I shall remember forever.” It’s not the longest musical in the world but that was more than made up for by the willingness of the cast to perform a high energy reprise which seemed to include most of the songs from the show and had the entire audience up and dancing. Great fun all round and if you didn’t make it to the Auditorium for this one, well you missed out on a real treat!
