Best Feet Forward For The Dong Energy Great Grimsby 10K

f you’re a keen runner then you probably booked your place in the Great Grimsby 10k ages ago – if you didn’t then it’s bad luck this time because the event is officially full. Sponsored by major local businesses including Dong Energy, Grimsby Town FC, Young’s, ABP and Wilkin & Chapman as well as the Council, the race starts at 10am on Sunday 31st July and follows a fast and super flat course, starting in front of Grimsby Town Hall and finishing in People’s Park. The route will take runners out to Nuns Corner and through Scartho towards New Waltham before returning via Peaks Parkway. There’ll be full road closures along the route so there should be some good times on the day and the course has been officially measured and recognised as a 10k run under UK Athletics Rules. It certainly promises to be a great event and you can either come along and be a spectator or get a little bit closer to the action by volunteering or by entering a 2km Fun Run sponsored by Grimsby Town FC that starts before the main race at 9.45am, from the same start line outside Grimsby Town Hall. Fun runners finish under the same race arch as the 10k race in People’s Park. You can run or jog or walk the course - just come along and give it a go. Entry is only £4 and everyone will receive a super medal and goody bag.

Spectacular Pageant In Lincoln Will Celebrate The Centenary Of The Building Of The First Tank

hundred years ago the First World War raged across Europe, a war like no other before it. In the War Office the British commanders gathered to think up methods to sway the war in their favour and for a time the use of tracked farm machinery was considered. The idea was abandoned until Winston Churchill heard about it and decided to drive the idea through to completion. Fosters of Lincoln were commissioned to build the first eighteen landships – later to be known as tanks. It took just 141 days to turn rough blueprints into a finished battle machine, assembled mostly by female factory workers known as munitionettes. BBC Radio Lincolnshire will be commemorating the anniversary with a mass live performance in Lincoln city centre on Saturday 16th July. Titled Green Fields Beyond, it will be professionally led and performed by local people, with thousands expected to watch at Lincoln Castle and on Steep Hill. There’ll be parades, promenade

In May a full house of jazz and literature fans gathered at The Carr Lane Club to hear A Grimsby Fish Tale, an innovative and exciting piece of mixed media performance, the result of a collaboration between jazz saxophonist Alan Barnes, guitarist Pat McCarthy and poet Josie-Anne Gray. The work draws on the history of the Grimsby fishing industry, on the everyday lives of fishermen, at sea and relaxing back on land, their hardships and triumphs, the stories they told and the folklore that grew up around the pursuit of the silver jewels of the North Sea. If you weren't there you missed a real treat but there's a chance to catch the full performance once again at the official premiere which is part of the Cleethorpes Jazz Festival at McCormack's bar. The festival runs between the 24th and 26th June with A Grimsby Fish Tale on Sunday 26th at 8.45pm. one of us can be sure just what the future holds but one thing that’s certain is that the people best placed to succeed in a complex and technologically sophisticated world are those who have invested in their own personal development. Here on the South Bank we’re fortunate to have some excellent schools and top class colleges plus a wide range of independent providers who offer training in everything from IT Skills to Health & Safety and from Forklift Driving to First Aid – ensuring that the local workforce is fully geared up for the challenge of the future. And while the prospect of an offshore renewables boom and the benefits that it may bring (not least a possible new National Offshore Technologies College for our area) is featuring large on the agenda at present, let’s not forget that a wide range of vocational education and training will be required to meet the demands of the green energy industry, not just engineers but IT specialists, chefs, hospitality and media professionals and logistics experts. So here are some of our best local training providers and we talk to Melanie Onn about the proposed new Wind College - an essential part of making this area ready for a brighter future!

“Renewable energy represents a huge opportunity for this area” The Peoples talks to Melanie Onn MP The Peoples: Hello Melanie and thanks for finding the time to talk to us. We met you the other day at an event to raise awareness about local homelessness and it’s clearly an issue you feel strongly about. Do you think that homelessness is now, or is likely to become, a serious problem in our area? The problem is less acute than in some big cities but I definitely think it will grow in importance for Grimsby. There are waiting lists for the Salvation Army, people are struggling to get into the YMCA, Harbour Place is seeing increased footfall. At the moment it’s a hidden issue but more and more we are seeing people on the streets.

Reading your online biography it looks as though, even if you haven’t been homeless yourself, you’ve been close enough that you can understand just how it might feel. When I was sixteen or seventeen I left home and Doorstep found me somewhere to live in a shared house with other girls. Without their help and support I don’t know what I would have done. It would have been impossible to stay in my living situation, I didn’t have anywhere else to go and I would have felt very uncomfortable relying on friends. This is what happens to many young people who are forced to leave home and have to hope that somebody will let them stay.

How important do you think the renewables industry is going to be for the local economy? It’s an enormous opportunity and I think we’ve started to see that with the companies that are here already. It’s not just offshore wind of course, it’s onshore as well. We would like to move beyond the engineering and maintenance and operational side of things into manufacturing, technical and development areas. The ABLE Marine Energy Park Development at Killingholme has the potential to create up to four thousand jobs in a wide variety of sectors including logistics and transportation and there could be a research centre as well. This is an exciting and young industry, like nothing we’ve ever had before.

They’re employing local people and a lot of skilled people are moving into the area, which is good for the economy, but there are barriers for local people. We can’t easily access the docks and although there has been a lot written about the industry, it’s difficult to know how to get a person, who might be at school now, onto a training path which will help them to get employment in these new industries in four or five years time. It’s not as straightforward as becoming a lorry driver for example. There is a clear pathway for that, but not for the wind energy industry and that means that people do not necessarily get onto the right track while they’re still at school. Of course people can retrain later in life but it’s much better to do these qualifications while you are young because it’s always more difficult to access higher education when one is older. And in our area we seem to suffer from a lack of success at post secondary level. And that is a shame. Many employers in this industry will be looking for people who have gained more advanced qualifications and that’s where a National Wind Energy College would be useful.

There was a problem with a deadline being missed. Yes and it was a shame. Work has continued however and our LEC now believe that they can finance the college privately, so they don’t need the funding but they do need the badge. They want the title that says that this is a national centre of excellence for teaching people about the different facets of the wind industry. When we met with Nick Bowles, Minister of State for Skills, he said that he was open to the idea of more national colleges and that funding would not be ruled out. So we’re now at a very early stage of putting this all together and if there is an Autumn statement we would hope that we would see a revised bid going in. I’d like to see it south of the river and I think we’ve done quite a good job of promoting Grimsby as the national renewables capital of the UK. I’ve had people from Hull complaining so I’m obviously upsetting the right people. I want the town and local people to get as much as benefit as possible from this. And you’ve been working very closely with Martin Vickers, MP for Cleethorpes on the college project? Absolutely. The important thing is getting the college, and we’ve got good training facilities on the South Bank already. I think it will have a free school ethos, with businesses saying what training they need and to what level. I think this kind of training already goes on but it’s difficult to access unless you work in the industry. I want a college where young people can get the qualifications that they need and which will help them to enter the industry. We certainly wish you every success with the project and thank you very much for talking with us today.

Sheds At The Minster For Local School Pupils

ver the past few weeks there's been a terrific exhibition on at Grimsby Minster called Deities At the Bottom Of The Garden, which featured a collection of gorgeous miniature sheds, created by artist Richard Bartle, each decorated on the inside as a place of religious worship for one of the worlds major religions. As well as delighting visitors to the Minster the exhibition also featured in the schoolwork of local school children who have been visiting the Minster and taking the opportunity to build sheds of their own to commemorate their visit. The schools workshops were aimed at Years 3 to 6 and covered elements of the RE, Art and British Values syllabuses. They were supported with funding from the David Ross Foundation. We went down to visit a workshop with pupils from Macaulay Primary School who were clearly having a great time learning about the world's diverse faiths and devising their own symbols to put inside their sheds. All were agreed that they'd had a great time, and many of them intended to get their parents to bring them down for a second visit.

Is it better to employ someone like yourself or a full time accounts operative?

Are there any particular industries for whom you offer special help?

Obviously the answer to that will depend on circumstances but in many cases a business will not need a full timer and they will be better served by hiring someone like myself for a couple of hours a week perhaps. It can make a big difference to the finances of a business if they can save money on payroll.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream Caxton Theatre 26th April 2016

he Caxton’s don’t usually do Shakespeare - the last time was fifty years ago for the 400th anniversary of his birth - but if this excellent and funny production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream is anything to go by it’s very much to be hoped that an occasional bit of bardery will appear on their programme from time to time in future. Director Cathy Bennett-Ryan wisely chooses to cut some of the more ponderous material from a text which can drag a little sometimes, and to play the piece for laughs, and she is very fortunate to have a cast who have the comedy chops to hit the audience’s funny bone every time. Chris Dempsey as Nick Bottom is outstanding, and although it’s fair to say that whoever gets this role has a high proportion of the best lines in the play, his mix of spivvy arrogance and bewildered libidinousness is a delight and gives the other mechanicals in the play within a play a strong centre against which to develop their own parts. Bottom’s love scene with Sam Brierley’s Francis Flute/Thisbe is almost painfully funny and awkward as is Phil Whitfield’s Snug/lion. One of the problems facing any version of the Dream is how to render the four seething brained Athenian lovers who find themselves lost in the woods at night and subject to the tormenting of the fairies. Played straight they can be awfully dull and a bit samey but here Kieron James (Lysander), Jack Scott (Demetrius), Hayley Brown (Helena) and Rebecca Holland as Hermia manage to make them each a discernible individual and to make the most of the play’s potential for physical comedy. Hermia’s repeated lunges across the stage towards her rival looked particularly vengeful and while Helena taunting and tactical withdrawals kept the tension high and the laughs flowing.

Although the comedy is very much to the fore there are still some more serious themes to be teased out from the performance. Not least that if this is a play about love then it is at very least ambivalent about its subject matter. Of the five couples involved, (if we count Pyramus and Thisbe who do not emerge well from their relationship), one is doomed by law to die, one is strictly one sided, one is no longer speaking because of a custody dispute and one is only getting married because the female half lost a fight. It doesn’t bode well for the future and subsequent events involving love potions just seem to make it clear that love isn’t always what the romantic poets would have us believe. In Athens it’s a treacherous and capriciously random force of nature that seems to do considerably more harm than good and as the text reminds us truth, reason and love keep little company together nowadays. Not much changed there then. Honourable mentions go to Byron Young and Gemma Dodds who double up as Theseus/Hippolyta and Oberon/Titania and to members of Caxton Youth Theatre who played the tie dyed rainbow fairies. First prize for scene stealing goes to fourteen year old Ryan Taylor for a terrifically agile and knowing motley clad Puck. Looking for something new and exciting for dinner? Why not take a trip down dock and let JCS and Fastline solve your problem! With the Lincolnshire Show on the horizon it’s a good time to remember that the region is globally renowned as the UK’s food county. And among the things that we do best is, of course, seafood of all kinds. So here’s a recipe from our friends at The Seafood Authority that’s ideal for making with some crab from Fastline Shellfish and some delicious smoked salmon from JCS Seafoods. What could be nicer?

Smoked Salmon, Brown Crab and Watercress Terrine Prep time: 26-30 minutes Cooking time: 5 minutes Serves: 8 Ingredients: 250g white crab meat from a brown crab 450g smoked salmon slices 1tbsp olive oil 140g watercress, tough stems removed, plus extra to serve 600g reduced fat cream cheese zest of a lemon, plus wedges to serve 2tbsp finely chopped fresh dill Method: Line a 20cm x 10cm loaf tin with cling film, laying it in as smoothy as possible and letting the excess hang over the sides. Cover the base, ends, and the sides of the terrine tin with 325g of the smoked salmon slices, slightly overlapping them. Again, allow the ends of the pieces to overhang so that they can be folded over the finished terrine. Chop the remaining smoked salmon finely and set aside.

Put the olive oil in a large frying pan and add the watercress, allowing it to wilt down over a medium heat for 1 minute. Let it cool, then squeeze out the excess water in a clean tea towel and chop finely. Divide the cream cheese between two medium sized mixing bowls. Add the watercress to one half and season. Add the crab meat, chopped smoked salmon, lemon zest, dill, and plenty of black pepper to the other bowl or plain cream cheese and fold together, trying not to break up the salmon too much. Spoon half the crab mixture into the lined loaf tin, smoothing the top with a spatula. Top with all of the watercress mixture, again smoothing the top. Finish with the remaining crab mixture and smooth the top. Fold the overhanging smoked salmon slices over the top to seal the terrine completely. Then cover the terrine with the overhanging ends of cling film. Weigh it down with a couple of tins or similarly heavy objects and chill in the fridge for at least 5 hours (preferably overnight). Slice and serve with watercress and lemon wedges.

Thanks to generous sponsorship from Young’s the carnival continues to go from strength to strength and this year’s event promises to be even bigger and better than last year when more than 40,000 people lined the streets, raising thousands of pounds for local good causes in the process. Staged every year since 1976 and at one point the largest parade of its type in Europe, the Carnival nearly came to an end a few years ago but now it’s back to it’s best - a delight for all the family. All Set For National Armed Forces Day

y now, unless youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been living as a hermit for a year, you'll probably have gathered that Saturday 25th June will see Cleethorpes host the National Armed Forces Day national, which promises to be one of the biggest events the borough has ever seen. HRH The Duke of Kent will attend be attending as the Queen's representative and Prime Minister David Cameron will be there too. The Armed Forces Day aims to raise awareness of, show support for and celebrate the contribution of servicemen and women, past and present and this year, around 100,000 people are expected to attend. The weekend will see displays from all three branches of the armed forces, including the Red Arrows, the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, Parachute Display teams and the Royal Navy Black Cats helicopter display flight. In the water, HMS Blyth, one of seven Sandown class Mine Countermeasures Vessels based at Clyde Naval Base in Faslane, Scotland, will be visiting our shores along with other vessels. And back on land, vehicles such as the AS90, a Warrior and a Terrier will be among some of the highlights in the military villages. So make a note in your diaries for a once in a lifetime opportunity to pay tribute to the hard work and bravery of our armed forces.

The RHS returns to Tatton Park For The Greatest Garden Event In The North

t’s one of the biggest and best garden events in the North of England and this year the RHS returns to Tatton’s stunning 1,000 acre deer park for its eighteenth year, with a host of displays and new features for the perfect summer day out.

Some of the highlights at this year’s show include a new Evolution Gardens category, all new Talks Theatre in the Floral Marquee where you can garner advice from the likes of gardening expert and TV personality Carol Klein, and The Vineyard, an area dedicated to tastings and English wine heritage. Art features in the form of Art In The Garden, a curated collection of sculptures surrounding a champagne bar while staff from Manchester School of Art have designed unique decorations for Fools and Follies, transforming a wellknown clump of trees - which has provided the backdrop for many an RHS Tatton garden - into an exploration of the magic and fantasy surrounding the concept of folly. his year’s Tour de Yorkshire ran from Friday 29th April to Sunday 1st May, beginning in Beverley and finishing in Scarborough and covering 520km (that’s 323 miles in English money) along the way. And of course at each town they visited they turned the streets blue and yellow, with bunting, flags, face paint and dozens of bicycles hanging from trees, perched on rooftops or hung above shop doorways. We went across to the start at Beverley to take a look at what happens when dozens of cyclists, hundreds of crew and a couple of dozen huge busses take over the centre of a small mediaeval market town, and to soak up some of the atmosphere of the big day. It was certainly a great event - a race and a trade show and a carnival all mixed into one and the people of Beverley turned out in their thousand to welcome the riders and their teams and to send them off in style!

all the way as league football returns to Blundell Park! W hat a fantastic night it was when the Grimsby Town players and staff took to an open topped bus to celebrate their victory at Wembley and promotion back into the Football League. The Mayor led the community singing and the players were generous with their time, showing of their trophy to the crowd, signing autographs, posing for selfies and obviously enjoying themselves every bit as much as the assembled black and white multitude outside the Town Hall. We were lucky enough to get to chat to Town legend Dave Boylen and he told us that from what he has seen the present squad have the spirit and talent that will be needed to make further progress next season and beyond and we’ve got to say that we think he’s right. So we’ll be looking forward to more silverware because there’s something about having a successful local team that makes the town a better place to be. So Up The Mariners and roll on next season!
