Best Feet Forward For The Dong Energy Great Grimsby 10K

f you’re a keen runner then you probably booked your place in the Great Grimsby 10k ages ago – if you didn’t then it’s bad luck this time because the event is officially full. Sponsored by major local businesses including Dong Energy, Grimsby Town FC, Young’s, ABP and Wilkin & Chapman as well as the Council, the race starts at 10am on Sunday 31st July and follows a fast and super flat course, starting in front of Grimsby Town Hall and finishing in People’s Park. The route will take runners out to Nuns Corner and through Scartho towards New Waltham before returning via Peaks Parkway. There’ll be full road closures along the route so there should be some good times on the day and the course has been officially measured and recognised as a 10k run under UK Athletics Rules. It certainly promises to be a great event and you can either come along and be a spectator or get a little bit closer to the action by volunteering or by entering a 2km Fun Run sponsored by Grimsby Town FC that starts before the main race at 9.45am, from the same start line outside Grimsby Town Hall. Fun runners finish under the same race arch as the 10k race in People’s Park. You can run or jog or walk the course - just come along and give it a go. Entry is only £4 and everyone will receive a super medal and goody bag.

If you fancy entering the Fun Run there are still places available and you can enter online. Just head for www.greatgrimsby10k.com/ fun-run-and-festival and follow the link to get registered. Have fun and we’ll see you there!

Spectacular Pageant In Lincoln Will Celebrate The Centenary Of The Building Of The First Tank

A

hundred years ago the First World War raged across Europe, a war like no other before it. In the War Office the British commanders gathered to think up methods to sway the war in their favour and for a time the use of tracked farm machinery was considered. The idea was abandoned until Winston Churchill heard about it and decided to drive the idea through to completion. Fosters of Lincoln were commissioned to build the first eighteen landships – later to be known as tanks. It took just 141 days to turn rough blueprints into a finished battle machine, assembled mostly by female factory workers known as munitionettes. BBC Radio Lincolnshire will be commemorating the anniversary with a mass live performance in Lincoln city centre on Saturday 16th July. Titled Green Fields Beyond, it will be professionally led and performed by local people, with thousands expected to watch at Lincoln Castle and on Steep Hill. There’ll be parades, promenade

In May a full house of jazz and literature fans gathered at The Carr Lane Club to hear A Grimsby Fish Tale, an innovative and exciting piece of mixed media performance, the result of a collaboration between jazz saxophonist Alan Barnes, guitarist Pat McCarthy and poet Josie-Anne Gray. The work draws on the history of the Grimsby fishing industry, on the everyday lives of fishermen, at sea and relaxing back on land, their hardships and triumphs, the stories they told and the folklore that grew up around the pursuit of the silver jewels of the North Sea. If you weren't there you missed a real treat but there's a chance to catch the full performance once again at the official premiere which is part of the Cleethorpes Jazz Festival at McCormack's bar. The festival runs between the 24th and 26th June with A Grimsby Fish Tale on Sunday 26th at 8.45pm. THEATRE

Silhouettes Musical Theatre Present

Carousel

Bustin’ Out All Over An Auditorium Near You Until Saturday June 4th!

S

et in a coastal community with a fishing based economy and a permanent fairground, Carousel is in many ways the perfect musical for our area. Of course we don’t have clambakes but they don’t have fish chips and mushy peas, so that’s even, but the show does boast one of the few discussions of the erotic potency of piscine olfaction in the whole of western literature (outside of specialist publications) – a phenomenon without which Grimsby would presumably never have grown beyond being a village. To celebrate their 75th anniversary this year Silhouettes Musical Theatre are presenting the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic, directed by David Wrightam, at the Auditorium between June 1st and 4th, and it’s a real treat for ear and eye, with great singing, exuberant dancing and fine acting throughout. All concerned give excellent performances, especially the two principles, Jordan Carlton, who is suitably raffish and indecisive as Billy Bigelow and does a fine job with the tricky Soliloquy and Kate Prior whose Julie Jordan has just the right mix of innocence and steely determination to get her man. They’re supported by a fine cast including Jade Hebdon, Gary Howson and John Ferguson as the romantic triangle of Carrie, Enoch and Jigger, (never trust a man named after a burrowing parasitic insect), and Ann Forward whose Mrs Mullin deploys boothloads of frowzy swagger as she seeks to bring her favourite ex-employee back to the midway. John Solley and Susan Wheatley-Solley bring some old fashioned New England Methodist charm to the roles of Starkeeper and Heavenly Friend. The chorus and supporting cast are excellent too, particularly in the grand set piece June’s Bustin’ Out All Over, as is the orchestra (under the guidance of musical director Harold Thompson) and the choreography (courtesy of Hayley Wrightam). In their hands even the dream sequence, which has the potential to be a bit dull, (I’ve never really understood the ballet within a musical thing), is a highlight, with bright purple show people (there’s no people like them) and the uptight Snow family, conspiring to torment the young Louise, played by Lucy Frith, who manages to make a big impact in the few scenes in which she appears.

The sets and costumes are terrific, (getting a functioning carousel onto an amateur stage must have been a daunting challenge but it’s accomplished in style) and the whole production has enormous visual impact. The opening scene at the fairground is full of colour and bustle and the death scene (spoiler alert – it’s Billy – but you probably knew that anyway) with the gaudily dressed townsfolk in their party clothes standing in a deeply shadowed line across the stage while Julie weeps over the body of her feller looks like a Victorian Caravaggio. If there’s a downside then possibly it’s Carousel itself. Richard Rodger’s music is fine, Oscar Hammerstein’s lyrics the same, but it’s hard to believe that this musical, voted the best of all time by Time magazine in 1999, would achieve that position today. It’s an unwieldy piece that seems determined to break all the conventions of storytelling and it’s the book, also by Hammerstein and adapted from the play Liliom by Ferenc Molnar, that’s principally at fault. That and having a central moral that it’s possible for men to hit women hard and make it feel like a kiss. Possibly not a great message for the 21st century. Whatever the shortcomings of the libretto, (and bearing in mind that it’s possible that I’m wrong about it and the rest of the world is right), the Silhouettes deliver a show full of joy and gusto and if you’re a fan of the Broadway musical tradition, or even if you’re not, it’s well worth a visit. Carousel is at the Grimsby Auditorium until June 4th at 7.30pm each evening and with a 2pm matinee on Saturday. THEATRE

THEATRE

Murder Most Agreeable Dead Man’s Hand Caxton Theatre 4th-11th June 2016

I

n an elegant and isolated villa in 1950s Italy people are dying. Thrown together apparently by chance, a group of strangers soon come to realise that their presence is in fact the result of the machinations of the mysterious and unseen Mr Konarkis. His motives are unclear but a bloodstained note, (which arrives special delivery attached to a disembowelled fox), urges them to repent and confess their sins in order to save themselves. Stop me if you think you’ve heard this one. We’re in Agatha Christie territory surely? With a little JB Priestley for good measure. Maybe so, but there’s a twist. Or rather there are several twists. And then some more. In fact this new production at the Caxton Theatre, directed by Debra West, has more twists than a bag of eels and nothing is ever what it seems. It’s a knowing and ever so slightly post modern take on a genre that has been a staple of the British stage for decades. The classic tropes of the stage thriller arrive and are dispatched as quickly as the proverbial strangers in a country

villa and as the body count rises so does the tension. Who will be next? More importantly, who will be last? Since it’s such an ensemble piece and because I’m terrified of inadvertently giving things away, I’m going to take the coward’s way out and simply say that the whole cast is excellent and that Dead Man’s Hand is a splendidly enjoyable evening for anyone who loves a great thriller delivered with panache and just the right mix of thrills and suspension of disbelief. This is a play that will keep you guessing right to the end and it’s huge fun and very stylish too. Highly recommended. Dead Man’s Hand runs from 4th-11th June at 7.30pm. TRAINING & SKILLS

Training & Skills

meeting the challenge of the future

N

one of us can be sure just what the future holds but one thing that’s certain is that the people best placed to succeed in a complex and technologically sophisticated world are those who have invested in their own personal development. Businesses too are more likely to rise above the competition if their workforce have the knowledge and expertise to make the most of the opportunities that the changing economy has to offer. Here on the South Bank we’re fortunate to have some excellent schools and top class colleges plus a wide range of independent providers who offer training in everything from IT Skills to Health & Safety and from Forklift Driving to First Aid – ensuring that the local workforce is fully geared up for the challenge of the future. And while the prospect of an offshore renewables boom and the benefits that it may bring (not least a possible new National Offshore Technologies College for our area) is featuring large on the agenda at present, let’s not forget that a wide range of vocational education and training will be required to meet the demands of the green energy industry, not just engineers but IT specialists, chefs, hospitality and media professionals and logistics experts. So here are some of our best local training providers and we talk to Melanie Onn about the proposed new Wind College - an essential part of making this area ready for a brighter future!

TRAINING & SKILLS

21

“Renewable energy represents a huge opportunity for this area” The Peoples talks to Melanie Onn MP The Peoples: Hello Melanie and thanks for finding the time to talk to us. We met you the other day at an event to raise awareness about local homelessness and it’s clearly an issue you feel strongly about. Do you think that homelessness is now, or is likely to become, a serious problem in our area? The problem is less acute than in some big cities but I definitely think it will grow in importance for Grimsby. There are waiting lists for the Salvation Army, people are struggling to get into the YMCA, Harbour Place is seeing increased footfall. At the moment it’s a hidden issue but more and more we are seeing people on the streets.

Reading your online biography it looks as though, even if you haven’t been homeless yourself, you’ve been close enough that you can understand just how it might feel. When I was sixteen or seventeen I left home and Doorstep found me somewhere to live in a shared house with other girls. Without their help and support I don’t know what I would have done. It would have been impossible to stay in my living situation, I didn’t have anywhere else to go and I would have felt very uncomfortable relying on friends. This is what happens to many young people who are forced to leave home and have to hope that somebody will let them stay.

How important do you think the renewables industry is going to be for the local economy? It’s an enormous opportunity and I think we’ve started to see that with the companies that are here already. It’s not just offshore wind of course, it’s onshore as well. We would like to move beyond the engineering and maintenance and operational side of things into manufacturing, technical and development areas. The ABLE Marine Energy Park Development at Killingholme has the potential to create up to four thousand jobs in a wide variety of sectors including logistics and transportation and there could be a research centre as well. This is an exciting and young industry, like nothing we’ve ever had before.

22

TRAINING & SKILLS

They’re employing local people and a lot of skilled people are moving into the area, which is good for the economy, but there are barriers for local people. We can’t easily access the docks and although there has been a lot written about the industry, it’s difficult to know how to get a person, who might be at school now, onto a training path which will help them to get employment in these new industries in four or five years time. It’s not as straightforward as becoming a lorry driver for example. There is a clear pathway for that, but not for the wind energy industry and that means that people do not necessarily get onto the right track while they’re still at school. Of course people can retrain later in life but it’s much better to do these qualifications while you are young because it’s always more difficult to access higher education when one is older. And in our area we seem to suffer from a lack of success at post secondary level. And that is a shame. Many employers in this industry will be looking for people who have gained more advanced qualifications and that’s where a National Wind Energy College would be useful.

There was a problem with a deadline being missed. Yes and it was a shame. Work has continued however and our LEC now believe that they can finance the college privately, so they don’t need the funding but they do need the badge. They want the title that says that this is a national centre of excellence for teaching people about the different facets of the wind industry. When we met with Nick Bowles, Minister of State for Skills, he said that he was open to the idea of more national colleges and that funding would not be ruled out. So we’re now at a very early stage of putting this all together and if there is an Autumn statement we would hope that we would see a revised bid going in. I’d like to see it south of the river and I think we’ve done quite a good job of promoting Grimsby as the national renewables capital of the UK. I’ve had people from Hull complaining so I’m obviously upsetting the right people. I want the town and local people to get as much as benefit as possible from this. And you’ve been working very closely with Martin Vickers, MP for Cleethorpes on the college project? Absolutely. The important thing is getting the college, and we’ve got good training facilities on the South Bank already. I think it will have a free school ethos, with businesses saying what training they need and to what level. I think this kind of training already goes on but it’s difficult to access unless you work in the industry. I want a college where young people can get the qualifications that they need and which will help them to enter the industry. We certainly wish you every success with the project and thank you very much for talking with us today.

Sheds At The Minster For Local School Pupils

O

ver the past few weeks there's been a terrific exhibition on at Grimsby Minster called Deities At the Bottom Of The Garden, which featured a collection of gorgeous miniature sheds, created by artist Richard Bartle, each decorated on the inside as a place of religious worship for one of the worlds major religions. As well as delighting visitors to the Minster the exhibition also featured in the schoolwork of local school children who have been visiting the Minster and taking the opportunity to build sheds of their own to commemorate their visit. The schools workshops were aimed at Years 3 to 6 and covered elements of the RE, Art and British Values syllabuses. They were supported with funding from the David Ross Foundation. We went down to visit a workshop with pupils from Macaulay Primary School who were clearly having a great time learning about the world's diverse faiths and devising their own symbols to put inside their sheds. All were agreed that they'd had a great time, and many of them intended to get their parents to bring them down for a second visit.

A Glorious Festival Of Flowers At St Peter’s Church

S

t Peter's Church in Cleethorpes is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year and to mark the occasion they’ve organised a series of events including a marvellous Flower Festival which we were fortunate enough to visit this week. The celebrations will also include an exhibition by the Great Grimsby Family History Group, which runs from June 8th-17th and features exhibits drawn from local registers of births, marriages and deaths. There are two visits from Dr Alan Dowling who will be giving a talk entitled How Cleethorpes Became A Seaside Resort on June 8th and reading from The Young Visiters By Daisy Ashford on June 15th. Both events are at 2pm. June also marks the return of the popular St Peter’s concerts which begin on June 10th with young musicians from Thrunscoe Academy playing the cello, singing and Samba drumming and continue through to late August, every Friday from midday until 1pm with a mixture of jazz and classical and even some ukulele music. Visit the church website at www.stpeterscleethorpes. org.uk for more details and many thanks to everybody at the church who was so helpful when we visited.

Manchester’s new favourites bring their unique acoustic hip hop to the Polar Bear in Hull

I

f you’re free on Tuesday 7th June then we’d highly recommend a trip into the wilderness north of the river for the visit of Prose to The Polar Bear in Hull. The Manchester band have made quite a name for themselves recently with their unique blend of hip hop, acoustic guitars and electro beats. Their songs are complex epics that tell of the pains and joys (but mostly pains, let’s be honest here) of life in the 21st century and they’ve gained support from BBC Introducing Manchester, as well as radio plays from Huw Stephens and John Kennedy. They also won the coveted Manchester Evening News fan voted Best Breakthrough Artist Award for 2016. Most frequently compared to The Streets, the band in fact have a high intensity sound all of their own with an authentic working class voice and songs that can be funny or sad but always searingly honest, intelligent and compassionate. Their new album All Too Familiar is due out in June, with the first single Home of The Brave coming out last month. The album is a distillation of everything that makes the band great, anthemic tales of life and love growing up in Manchester council estates. The band has also recently collaborated with the Big Issue North to tell individual stories of homelessness in four Northern UK towns. The first in the series featured track All Too Familiar and told the story of frontman Mike Murray and his very personal story of homelessness when he was seventeen. After being signed by high profile Brit producer Naughty Boy to his own record label, the band have been on a steady upwards trajectory and it’s unlikely that you’ll get to see them again in a venue as intimate as The Polar Bear so get yourself over to the land of the Hully Gullies and catch them now. Prose play the Polar Bear on 7th June. You can find them at www.prosemusic.com or via social media.

Patients urged to nominate their own NHS stars H

ave you had a good experience from your local NHS? Want to thank that particular member of staff who did their best to look after you?

Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust is seeking nominations for the Patients’ Choice award category at its annual staff awards ceremony, Our Stars, which is held every October. Simon Dunn, people and organisational development lead explained: “Each year we hold a special event to celebrate and recognise those staff members who add that extra sparkle to our patients’ experience with us. Whether it was someone clinical who provided exceptional care or someone else who made your visit that little bit easier we want to hear from you.” “We’re inviting nominations from patients and their loved ones for the Patients’ Choice award so we can recognise those individuals and teams who have made a real difference to patients and their families.” So whether it was a nurse, doctor, cleaner, therapist, consultant, volunteer, porter, receptionist, a member of catering staff or someone else - if a member of staff made your day recently now’s your chance to say ‘thank you’. Karen Jackson, chief executive at the Trust, said: “Often our staff often don’t realise that what they do is special, they see it as part of their daily job. Help us to honour and recognise their efforts by nominating them for an award.” Last year’s winner was Lindsay Clark, midwife at Scunthorpe General Hospital. The patient who nominated Lindsay said: “She is a dedicated, compassionate midwife who deserves this nomination. She is an absolute credit to your team and without her careful eye and fast acting manner when things deteriorated during my labour; I am not convinced me and my daughter would be a healthy as we both are today.” If you have been a patient or visitor at Scunthorpe, Grimsby or Goole hospitals or at one of the Trust’s community health services, you can nominate a staff member, clinical or non-clinical, in one of these ways: • • •

Go to the Trust website at: www.nlg.nhs.uk/about/awards Email nlg-tr.comms@nhs.net Call (01724) 387739.

Please provide your name, contact number, the name of the staff member you are nominating, the area they work in and the reason for the nomination. The winner of the Patient’s Choice award, and nine other awards, will be revealed at the Our Stars 2016 event at the Forest Pines Hotel and Golf Resort on Friday 7th October.

small (& medium sized)

is beautiful!

According to official statistics small to medium sized enterprises (hereinafter SMEs) have up to 250 full time employees and an annual turnover below £25 million pounds. (Actually that sounds quite big to us.) This definition means that over 99% of the businesses in the UK are SMEs - a total of 5 million businesses! Of course most of the business news on radio and TV tends to be about huge companies and multinational corporations but the truth is that if you want to see the real engine room of the UK economy then SMEs

are the place to start looking. Without them the we’d be in a terrible mess. So here are some of our favourite local SMEs drawn from a wide range of sectors including retail, construction and service industries. None of them are going to take over the world, but all of them help to make it a better place, for themselves, for their families and most importantly for their customers. So they deserve to be celebrated because we’d be a whole lot worse off without them!

What Can I Help You With Today? We thought it would be a good idea to have a little chat with Rebecca Beaton for this feature - because not only does most of her business involve serving the needs of SMEs - she is also an SME herself. Rebecca spent much of her career as a management accountant in the charity sector before deciding to move back to Grimsby and establish an accountancy service of her own, using the skills which she has acquired during her career to the benefit of local business people. The Peoples: What’s the most important service that you provide for your clients? RB: By keeping books and records up to date and accurate I not only ensure that they’re complying with the law, but also that they have all the information that they need to make important decisions about their businesses. I also help to make for a more effective use of resources because I free up entrepreneurs from routine bookkeeping allowing them to concentrate on running their business - which is what they are good at.

Is it better to employ someone like yourself or a full time accounts operative?

Are there any particular industries for whom you offer special help?

Obviously the answer to that will depend on circumstances but in many cases a business will not need a full timer and they will be better served by hiring someone like myself for a couple of hours a week perhaps. It can make a big difference to the finances of a business if they can save money on payroll.

I think I can offer assistance to businesses in most sectors who want to keep their records in an orderly manner but I do have experience of the construction industry payroll system, which is an area which has had a lot of regulatory attention just lately and can be very tricky for the uninitiated.

She’s the UK’s number one dance music diva and she’s playing Market Rasen Racecourse on 13th August. As a taster for what should be a great evening The Peoples got to chat with the fabulous ...

Jess

Glynne Since she first appeared on the scene as vocalist on Clean Bandit’s Grammy Award winning #1 hit Rather Be, pop sensation Jess Glynne has become one of the biggest UK breakthrough acts of recent years. Her number one charting debut album, I Cry When I Laugh, has now turned double platinum in the UK, making it the highest selling debut album of the past year. She also became the second British female solo artist after Cheryl to have five number one singles in the UK. 2016 is set to be a further massive year for Jess.

The Peoples: Hi Jess and thanks for talking to us. You’re playing a number of shows at racecourses this summer. Are you looking forward to that? I imagine the set up is a little bit different from your normal shows, as you’ll have horse racing essentially being your support act? Jess Glynne: Yes, never had horses as an opening act before. Looking forward to it. You are donating a percentage of your fee to charity Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) which is being matched by the Jockey Club Live. Why did you pick this charity in particular? Firstly I love horses and have loved riding from a young age. When I was first approached about playing these dates at racecourses it made me think about what happens to the horses that get injured or just too old to race anymore so I did some research and found out about the charity and the work it does. So when I agreed to the dates I said I’d do them if I could donate some of my fee to the charity. The Jockey Club kindly agreed to match my donation too, which is great. Will you be placing a bet? I’ll have a look at the runners and riders and see if any names pop out. You’ve had five number one singles and your debut album also headed straight in to the number one spot. You’ve had an amazing couple of years. Did you think it would happen this quickly, and this big for you? No it’s all been a bit of a whirlwind and I didn’t expect any of it, I just hoped and prayed for people to enjoy the music I was making. Being able to take my music around the world, through Europe, down to Australia and across to America has been insane and a real a dream come true.

MUSIC

You’re playing Market Rasen Racecourse soon and most of your tickets were snapped up in a few short weeks and other courses having now sold out. Are you surprised with the reaction you have been getting in areas you perhaps don’t visit very often?

Can you give us an idea of your setlist - have you noticed any songs fans react particularly well to? You’re going to have to wait and see.. I’m sure there will be a fair few songs in there that you will know.

I am always surprised and overwhelmed when I hear things Are you working on album number two yet? Anything you can tell us about who you are writing like that. It’s never a normal feeling. Have you ever visited racecourses before or followed I’m always writing - I keep all these ideas on my phoneand I’ve started writing a bit but it’s early days yet. When any races growing up? Any experience of horses? I’m not touring this summer and afterwards I will be back in the studio. I loved horse riding when I was growing up and used to go all the time. I have been to Ascot a couple of times, which was a laugh with my friends but race wise that’s Thanks for talking to us and we’ll look forward to the show! about it for me. Your performance at the Brits was spectacular. Did this give us an insight into what we expect from a large outdoor summer Jess Glynne show? Do you have anything special planned for these dates?

Jess Glynne plays Market Rasen Racecourse on Saturday 13th August.

Information and tickets for this Yes, the Brits was fun. Henry Priestman at Fusion Creative F

ormerly a member of Yachts and The Christians but now solo with his friend Les Glover, Henry Priestman has been a part of the UK music scene since the late 70s and although it’s hard to believe when one witnesses one of his live shows, he’s now sixty. Never. His visit to Fusion Creative on Saturday gave him the chance to showcase some of his newer material, covering topics as diverse as the uselessness of men and the joys of getting old but he also found time for the Christians’ classic Ideal World. Most of his songs have a wry humour to them but Peace At The End Of The Day, a song dedicated to his late mother and mother in law and Grey Is The New Blonde, showed that he can do tender and moving too. Swapping gags and banter with each other and with audience members Henry and Les gave a terrific performance filled with wit, humour and humanity and including a master class in how to sing while eating a Locket (other throat sweets are available), a skill possessed by many of the residents of Hull and the North Bank, where it is passed down from father to son as part of their oral tradition. Highlight of the evening was the gorgeous Valentine Song but it was a set with plenty of variety, including songs of political indignation, about the greed of politicians and Ghosts, a wonderful song about the Hessle Rd fishermen and the loss of the Hull fishing industry. Support came from Josie-Anne Gray who delivered a set of uncompromisingly political poetry. It was certainly a fantastic night and we understand there are plans to bring Henry Priestman back to Fusion in 2017 to work with the choir and to deliver workshops and a performance as part of their annual festival. That’s certainly an event to look forward to and there’s lots of great stuff coming up at Fusion, including a circus weekend and a young people’s theatre project for the summer. With theatre, music, gardening, crafts and lots more every week there’s always something great going on at Fusion. Look out for ukulele sessions – starting soon! Lord, What Fools These Mortals Be

Dodds as Titania with her fairy retinue

A Midsummer Night’s Dream Caxton Theatre 26th April 2016

T

he Caxton’s don’t usually do Shakespeare - the last time was fifty years ago for the 400th anniversary of his birth - but if this excellent and funny production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream is anything to go by it’s very much to be hoped that an occasional bit of bardery will appear on their programme from time to time in future. Director Cathy Bennett-Ryan wisely chooses to cut some of the more ponderous material from a text which can drag a little sometimes, and to play the piece for laughs, and she is very fortunate to have a cast who have the comedy chops to hit the audience’s funny bone every time. Chris Dempsey as Nick Bottom is outstanding, and although it’s fair to say that whoever gets this role has a high proportion of the best lines in the play, his mix of spivvy arrogance and bewildered libidinousness is a delight and gives the other mechanicals in the play within a play a strong centre against which to develop their own parts. Bottom’s love scene with Sam Brierley’s Francis Flute/Thisbe is almost painfully funny and awkward as is Phil Whitfield’s Snug/lion. One of the problems facing any version of the Dream is how to render the four seething brained Athenian lovers who find themselves lost in the woods at night and subject to the tormenting of the fairies. Played straight they can be awfully dull and a bit samey but here Kieron James (Lysander), Jack Scott (Demetrius), Hayley Brown (Helena) and Rebecca Holland as Hermia manage to make them each a discernible individual and to make the most of the play’s potential for physical comedy. Hermia’s repeated lunges across the stage towards her rival looked particularly vengeful and while Helena taunting and tactical withdrawals kept the tension high and the laughs flowing.

Although the comedy is very much to the fore there are still some more serious themes to be teased out from the performance. Not least that if this is a play about love then it is at very least ambivalent about its subject matter. Of the five couples involved, (if we count Pyramus and Thisbe who do not emerge well from their relationship), one is doomed by law to die, one is strictly one sided, one is no longer speaking because of a custody dispute and one is only getting married because the female half lost a fight. It doesn’t bode well for the future and subsequent events involving love potions just seem to make it clear that love isn’t always what the romantic poets would have us believe. In Athens it’s a treacherous and capriciously random force of nature that seems to do considerably more harm than good and as the text reminds us truth, reason and love keep little company together nowadays. Not much changed there then. Honourable mentions go to Byron Young and Gemma Dodds who double up as Theseus/Hippolyta and Oberon/Titania and to members of Caxton Youth Theatre who played the tie dyed rainbow fairies. First prize for scene stealing goes to fourteen year old Ryan Taylor for a terrifically agile and knowing motley clad Puck. Next Caxton’s shows are Dead Man’s Hand in early June and The Collector in late June/early July. Go to www.caxtontheatre.com for more details.

pinned but still wriggling The Collector Caxton Theatre June 30th-July 2nd

T

here’s something a little out of the ordinary on offer for theatre goers this weekend when The Caxton Players present The Collector, adapted by Mark Healy from the John Fowles novel of the same name.

It’s the dark and unsettling story of Frederick, socially inept and full of resentment, who kidnaps the girl of his dreams and holds her captive in the cellar of his country house (bought with the proceeds of a lottery win). As a collector of butterflies he is familiar with the joy of reducing beautiful things into captivity and preparing them for display, but whereas in the past his subjects have not fought back all that much, he is unprepared for the fact that his latest captive is not prepared to resign herself meekly to her fate. In a post Fritzl world in which we have witnessed the release of many domestic captives who have been held for periods of months or years the idea behind the novel seems all too possible, but the motivation of the captor here is by no means easy to ascertain. Part victim, all monster, he’s a Caliban in a maroon tank top with a penchant for supratabular onanism, unable to control the emotional spasms which govern his behaviour. Part prude, part wannabe libertine, capable of moments of exaggerated kindness and acts of frenzied self pity, sometimes aware of his own monstrosity, sometimes seeming to believe that the situation that he has created is one that can be resolved with an outbreak of love and forgiveness. His captive is no simple character either - vain, priggish and condescending, in this version of the story she seems to bear less responsibility for her own situation than the novel might suggest, but she’s also resourceful and resilient and it’s these qualities that enable her to survive her captivity and sometimes make life awkward for her captor.

The play traces the shifting emotional politics of a situation in which neither character is able to establish psychological control over the other, as the captive Miranda seeks to confuse and undermine the guilt stricken Frederick. It could be a tricky proposition to stage effectively but director Nigel Stolworthy makes the most of the intimacy of the Novartis Suite to bring the audience uneasily close to the action. People often talk about breaking the fourth wall, but here the audience are actually made to feel that they are the fourth wall, part of the prison in which the characters find themselves. It’s not a comfortable feeling. Kieron Rogers as Frederick and Chloey Rose as Miranda make the most of the opportunity to deliver restrained and intelligent performances, their relationship shifting between contempt and sympathy, from anger to something which is almost friendship and back again in a moment. Or possibly it isn’t that at all, because at any moment there is always the possibility that one or both characters is dissembling in order to gain a physical or emotional advantage, and because this isn’t a whodunnit style thriller, there’s no big reveal at the end, so you get to make your own mind up. Highly recommended but leave the kids at home. Either they won’t understand it and you’ll be embarrassed or they will understand it and you’ll be embarrassed. The Collector is at the Caxton Theatre Novartis Suite from June 30th until July 2nd. Visit www.caxtontheatre.com for further details.

FINE GRIMSBY SEAFOOD

67

Looking for something new and exciting for dinner? Why not take a trip down dock and let JCS and Fastline solve your problem! With the Lincolnshire Show on the horizon it’s a good time to remember that the region is globally renowned as the UK’s food county. And among the things that we do best is, of course, seafood of all kinds. So here’s a recipe from our friends at The Seafood Authority that’s ideal for making with some crab from Fastline Shellfish and some delicious smoked salmon from JCS Seafoods. What could be nicer?

Smoked Salmon, Brown Crab and Watercress Terrine Prep time: 26-30 minutes Cooking time: 5 minutes Serves: 8 Ingredients: 250g white crab meat from a brown crab 450g smoked salmon slices 1tbsp olive oil 140g watercress, tough stems removed, plus extra to serve 600g reduced fat cream cheese zest of a lemon, plus wedges to serve 2tbsp finely chopped fresh dill Method: Line a 20cm x 10cm loaf tin with cling film, laying it in as smoothy as possible and letting the excess hang over the sides. Cover the base, ends, and the sides of the terrine tin with 325g of the smoked salmon slices, slightly overlapping them. Again, allow the ends of the pieces to overhang so that they can be folded over the finished terrine. Chop the remaining smoked salmon finely and set aside.

Put the olive oil in a large frying pan and add the watercress, allowing it to wilt down over a medium heat for 1 minute. Let it cool, then squeeze out the excess water in a clean tea towel and chop finely. Divide the cream cheese between two medium sized mixing bowls. Add the watercress to one half and season. Add the crab meat, chopped smoked salmon, lemon zest, dill, and plenty of black pepper to the other bowl or plain cream cheese and fold together, trying not to break up the salmon too much. Spoon half the crab mixture into the lined loaf tin, smoothing the top with a spatula. Top with all of the watercress mixture, again smoothing the top. Finish with the remaining crab mixture and smooth the top. Fold the overhanging smoked salmon slices over the top to seal the terrine completely. Then cover the terrine with the overhanging ends of cling film. Weigh it down with a couple of tins or similarly heavy objects and chill in the fridge for at least 5 hours (preferably overnight). Slice and serve with watercress and lemon wedges.

The Best Party Of The Year Is Back For 2016

T

he streets of Cleethorpes will be filled with superheroes, cowboys, cartoon characters and dancers on Saturday 16th July when Cleethorpes Community Carnival returns with another parade packed with colour, music and fun for all the family. Thanks to generous sponsorship from Young’s the carnival continues to go from strength to strength and this year’s event promises to be even bigger and better than last year when more than 40,000 people lined the streets, raising thousands of pounds for local good causes in the process. Staged every year since 1976 and at one point the largest parade of its type in Europe, the Carnival nearly came to an end a few years ago but now it’s back to it’s best - a delight for all the family. So have fun and we’ll see you there!

The RHS returns to Tatton Park For The Greatest Garden Event In The North

I

t’s one of the biggest and best garden events in the North of England and this year the RHS returns to Tatton’s stunning 1,000 acre deer park for its eighteenth year, with a host of displays and new features for the perfect summer day out.

Some of the highlights at this year’s show include a new Evolution Gardens category, all new Talks Theatre in the Floral Marquee where you can garner advice from the likes of gardening expert and TV personality Carol Klein, and The Vineyard, an area dedicated to tastings and English wine heritage. Art features in the form of Art In The Garden, a curated collection of sculptures surrounding a champagne bar while staff from Manchester School of Art have designed unique decorations for Fools and Follies, transforming a wellknown clump of trees - which has provided the backdrop for many an RHS Tatton garden - into an exploration of the magic and fantasy surrounding the concept of folly. Also new for 2016 is Family Day, which will take place on Saturday 23rd July, coinciding with the launch of the big screen adaptation of Roald Dahl’s The BFG. The Big Friendly Giant will come to life in the form of a fabulous RHS Tatton Show Garden. Alongside new elements, visitors can also look forward to returning feature favourites, such as the famous 6x4 meter injections of innovative design courtesy of Back to Back Gardens and the Water Gardens which continue to demonstrate some of the best garden design in the world. The power of the shed will once again be highlighted by the Garden Hideaways feature. The RHS Young Designer of the Year competition is back too, and there’s JUL JUL a school gardens display to enjoy.

CYCLING

le vient à Beverley

T

his year’s Tour de Yorkshire ran from Friday 29th April to Sunday 1st May, beginning in Beverley and finishing in Scarborough and covering 520km (that’s 323 miles in English money) along the way. And of course at each town they visited they turned the streets blue and yellow, with bunting, flags, face paint and dozens of bicycles hanging from trees, perched on rooftops or hung above shop doorways. We went across to the start at Beverley to take a look at what happens when dozens of cyclists, hundreds of crew and a couple of dozen huge busses take over the centre of a small mediaeval market town, and to soak up some of the atmosphere of the big day. It was certainly a great event - a race and a trade show and a carnival all mixed into one and the people of Beverley turned out in their thousand to welcome the riders and their teams and to send them off in style!

Planning a summer getaway?

POWDER CHECK your vehicle for perfect peace of mind!

W

hat’s the dumbest thing you can do when driving to your summer holiday? Well believe it or not last summer over 2000 drivers had to be rescued because they had run out of fuel on the motorway! So before you set off a few basic checks – POWDER checks – are in order to make sure you arrive safely and on time. And if you’re not feeling confident you’ll find some excellent mechanics on these pages who’ll be glad to help.

P O W D E R

Petrol: Make sure that you have enough for the journey and plan refuelling stops along the way to avoid mishaps. Oil: Check it when the engine is cold and the vehicle is level. Also check clutch, brake, and power steering fluids. Water: Radiator and windscreen washer bottles should be checked while parked on a level surface. Damage: Check bodywork, wheels and fixtures, including the mirrors. Ensure windows are clean inside and out. Electrics: Check all lights, indicators and hazards are in good working order and clean. Also test the horn. Rubber: Check tyre pressures and tread depth, and look for damage to the tyres and wheels and wiper blades.

all the way as league football returns to Blundell Park! W hat a fantastic night it was when the Grimsby Town players and staff took to an open topped bus to celebrate their victory at Wembley and promotion back into the Football League. The Mayor led the community singing and the players were generous with their time, showing of their trophy to the crowd, signing autographs, posing for selfies and obviously enjoying themselves every bit as much as the assembled black and white multitude outside the Town Hall. We were lucky enough to get to chat to Town legend Dave Boylen and he told us that from what he has seen the present squad have the spirit and talent that will be needed to make further progress next season and beyond and we’ve got to say that we think he’s right. So we’ll be looking forward to more silverware because there’s something about having a successful local team that makes the town a better place to be. So Up The Mariners and roll on next season!
