Big Music Names Set To Make Cleethorpes Rock! There’s three days of top class music coming to the resort when Cleethorpes Rocks takes place at Meridian Park from Friday 19th to Sunday 21st August. Headliners include rock legends Wishbone Ash, Scouting For Girls, Reverend And The Makers and Eighties popstrel Toyah (pictured at the top of the page) whose recent vein of form has made her one of the most popular acts on the festival circuit. Grimsby’s very own lords of psych blues The Brew will be playing on the Saturday and there are loads of local bands on the bill and even a burlesque session with the Frou Frou Club to set pulses racing on the Friday! A ticket for the full weekend is only £45, which has got to be the best value around, and there are day tickets and family tickets available as well – just head for www.cleethorpesrocks.co.uk and pick the offer that’s right for you.
Fusion’s Summer Shakespeare For Young People If your kids are interested in theatre and would like to be involved with a special Shakespearian event over the summer then they should take a look at Dream On. It’s a fantastic two week project culminating in an al fresco staging of a funny and accessible adaptation of William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. A great way to learn about acting (and everything else that goes to make a
show) and a terrific introduction to the works of the Bard. The project is open to children and young people aged 7-19 years and no previous theatrical experience is required. Sessions will run from 10am-4pm on weekdays between Monday 8th and Friday 19th August and dress rehearsal and performance will be on Saturday 20th August between 3pm and 7pm. Fees will be £50 per person. For more information go to the Fusion website at www.fusioncreative.org.uk

4 elements The Urban Arts Festival Is Back & Better Than Ever
A
nyone who was at last year’s urban Arts Festival will have some great memories of music, dancing and of course the painting of several huge works of art, on walls and panels around St James’ House. In fact it was such a great day we were over the moon when we heard that the team behind the event, our big picture ltd and Lyns Urban Arts, have announced that they plan to do it all again this year – only bigger and better! This year the festival, themed around the four elements, will take place on Saturday 10th September from 10am to 6pm in the area around St James House and Grimsby Minster. Seventeen local, national and international artists including the legendary Odeith from Portugal will create live artwork and the area will be full of vibrant colour and sounds. There’ll be hip hop music and break dancing from Leeds based Blood Masterz Crew and street food, stalls and an urban art exhibition within the Minster itself. This year festival organisers have been able to gain funding for a series of workshops through the summer for young people aged from 8yrs to 18yrs in graffiti art, break dancing and hip hop music. Workshops are being run with kind support from Grimsby Institute. For more information on the big day and the workshop programme go to info@ ourbigpicture.co.uk or text 07793 114 180
An Exciting Autumn Season In Store At The Caxton Theatre
W
e've been lucky enough to enjoy some excellent productions at The Caxtons over the past couple of months and we’re looking forward to many more as their Autumn season approaches. Highlights include Mike Leigh's Abigail's Party (Saturday 16th to Saturday 23rd July) and in September there’s The Ladykillers (Saturday 3rd to Saturday 10th). In October there's Same Time Next Year which runs from Saturday 15th to Saturday 22nd. The Caxtons were founded in 1940 to provide some light relief from the depression of wartime and over 75 years later they’re still going strong, offering eight varied productions a year in their own 180 seat theatre and running an extremely successful Youth Theatre group. They hold a regular once a month get together - called Keep In Touch Thursdays (or KITT nights for short). New members are always welcome and KITT nights FREE can be a great way to find out if Caxtons is for you. Check the website SECURE or social media for further details. PARKING Caxtons Youth Theatre meets twice a week for drama games, improvisation, ON ORWELL STREET EVERY SHOW NIGHT confidence building, scripted work excluding Novartis and behind the scenes training. Suite performances CYT works towards at least one performance a year (this year it’s Seven Deadly Sins, from Friday 23rd to Saturday 24th September) in which all youth members take part, whether on the stage or behind it. A fantastic introduction to the wonderful world of theatre! For information go to www.caxtontheatre.com Tickets can be purchased via the website or from NELC Tourist Information Centres on 01472 323111

Unscanned at Stagecoach Theatre It’s always a privilege to be invited to see how much talent and enthusiasm there is for the performing arts in our area and our recent visit to Stagecoach Theatre’s excellent production of Unscanned was doubly special because it reminded us that we have a marvellous community of writers too. Author Tracy Todd’s work with the Stagecoach members gave them a unique experience of working with a writer and the result was a gripping piece of drama and a fine advert for the books in the Unscanned series. You can find Stagecoach on Facebook and Tracy Todd is at www.tracytodd.co.uk

SPOTLIGHT ON THE ST PETER’S AREA
St Peter’s Church celebrates its 150th anniversary with music, flowers and family history
O
ne hundred and fifty years ago Cleethorpes was a town of about a thousand people, spread across a wide area of tree lined fields. Most of the population were fishermen and they were predominantly Methodist. The Anglican community in the town was dwindling. Their nearest church was a good trek away, over the fields in Old Clee, but in 1850 a new and ambitious young vicar, the Reverend William Price Jones, was put in charge of the parish and that was a signal that things were about to change. Two years later there was a brand new vicarage – now part of the grounds of St Peter’s School – and Price Jones had became convinced that the town was about to experience a boom with the arrival of the railways. In 1864 a public meeting passed a resolution ‘that a new church at Cleethorpes is urgently needed and it is desirable that such a church be built and steps taken to raise funds for carrying out the work’.

Fund raising was begun and later that year architect John Fowler was engaged to design and build a 400 seater church. It was completed in 1866 at a total cost of £3,500, with the tower following soon afterwards. The clock was designed to be visible from the beach so that the growing crowds of holiday makers could check when their meals were ready in the local guest houses. In those days the Church was in Oole Rd but the street name was soon changed and St Peter’s Avenue it remains to this day – the church lying midway between the shopping centres of St Peter’s and those of Cambridge Street and Sea View Street. As well as fulfilling its religious function it’s very much a cultural centre with a terrific programme of concerts and exhibitions - see over the page for full details. To to celebrate its anniversary the church played host to concerts by The Orpheus Male Voice Choir amongst others, plus an exhibition by the Local History Group and a fantastic display of flowers, which we were lucky enough to go down and photograph.
You can find more of the images on our website and Facebook page and if you’ve never visited the Church we highly recommend it, simply because it has one of the prettiest interiors in the area and is a lovely place for some quiet reflection.

Well what a fantastic day that was! The Armed Forces Day National Event came to Cleethorpes and the people of the borough turned out in force to welcome a host of distinguished visitors, including Prime Minister David Cameron and the HRH The Duke Of Kent. There was a beach landing, a flypast by the Red Arrows, parachuting by the Red Devils and a glorious parade and salute in front of Knoll House. So the National Armed Forces Day has been and gone, with thousands of people lining the streets of Cleethorpes to watch the parade, air show and other events but for some families in our area – particularly those with family members in the armed forces – it was a particularly special event. Sue Almond is now the proprietor of Home Is Where The Heart Is, the gift and homewares emporium in Wellowgate, but before returning to Grimsby and setting up in business she spent 23 years as an army wife. Her husband Pete served his country in the 2nd Royal Anglians and the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, ending his service as a Sergeant Major in charge of Warrior Tanks. Sue and her young family lived in Celle in Germany for many years as well as in Peterborough and Colchester. Did she enjoy being an army wife? “I loved it,” she says. “It was a really happy time for all of us and the kids must have enjoyed it too because look what they’re doing now.” Sue’s son Craig, having served 4 years in The Royal Anglians is now a communications and information specialist in the Royal Navy, assigned to HMS Bulwark and her daughter Rebecca is awaiting final confirmation of her acceptance into the army as a dog handler. So was Armed Forces Day a big event in their house? “It certainly was. We spent the whole weekend at the seafront. It’s a wonderful opportunity to show our appreciation for the brave men and women who help to keep our country safe.”

HOME IMPROVEMENTS
Thinking about moving up the property ladder but put off by the costs? Maybe some home improvement would suit you better, because now is definitely the right time to ....
make the most of the home you own!
W
ith house prices on the rise and mortgages ever harder to come by many people are electing to stay where they are and to improve their existing properties. But what is the best way to invest your cash to get a good return? Here are a few suggestions from us -
Sort out the basics to start with. Structural problems like sagging roofs, rising damp, unstable chimneys or collapsing floors are all things that are only going to get worse. Get an expert in before you do any cosmetic work. These are likely to be among the most expensive work required in a renovation project but, in terms of adding value, they are absolutely essential. No skimping now.
Makeover the bathroom. Go for something fresh and modern looking with plenty of light. The bathroom is the ideal place to add a touch of luxury and, with it, a real wow factor that will add value. A visit to our good friends at Style Bathrooms is highly recommended. Make sure that at least one bathroom has a shower and buy the best bathroom furniture you can afford. Pay special attention to floors and walls
and ensure the bathroom has an extractor fan for ventilation. Adding a mirror or two it will make the space seem larger and brighter and you should think about fitting a heated towel rail. If you are laying new floor tiles, consider underfloor heating, but bear in mind that an electric mat system will raise the floor level by 3–4mm. A great bathroom will often be a key selling factor to a house purchaser so make yours just perfect!

HOME IMPROVEMENTS
Installing central heating will always pay for itself by increasing the value of your home. It will be considered an essential by most buyers and mortgage valuers because, let’s be honest, nobody likes to get up to a cold house in the middle of winter. Updating the heating system needs to be done in conjunction with improving the general energy efficiency of the building. Fuel prices can only go up in future and the time to stop wastage is now. Seal any drafts around doors and windows (but not airbricks), consider replacing windows that are beyond repair with double glazing, and add insulation into the loft space. Smarten those windows! This would be the ideal time to invest in some really good modern blinds. There are so many styles, colours and materials to choose from these days you’ll be spoilt for choice and if you pay a visit to our friends at Kensway Blinds you’ll know that you’re getting top value and service too!

HOME IMPROVEMENTS
A smart new kitchen is always going to be a good plan but don't make it too idiosyncratic - it has to appeal to others as well as you. Make it clean and hygienic looking and remember that in the modern home the kitchen has become a second living room. Don’t be afraid to splash some colour - for inspiration have a look at the Schuller range at Kitchen Discount.
Bright white halogen lighting is ideal for kitchens and a good quality extractor hood is essential. Potential buyers will be looking for a space that they can use easily and live in so give some thought to layout and storage. An attractive range style cooker is a feature that will attract many buyers. Flooring should look hygienic, be easy to clean and well fitted, as should ceramic tiles and the rest of the decor.
Whatever you choose to do make sure that you love it and that you have fun upgrading. Remember that it’s going to be your home for a while at least so make sure that you end up with something that you can live with - it isn’t all about the selling. Choose tradesmen wisely and with luck you’ll end up with a beautiful home that you’ll love to live in. Happy renovating!

Stay Active, Keep Young!
O
nce upon a time being a senior citizen was something that just happened to you - a comfy chair and a cup of tea and an occasional biscuit was all that was required. But nowadays seniorhood is a time of life when people make things happen - a time full of new challenges and adventures - and as the baby boomer generation progresses past pension age it’s going to get even more exciting. So how do you go about making sure that you have the very best retirement you can possibly have? Well staying fit and active is the first essential step. According to experts you should aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate activity every week and ideally, you should try to do something every day, preferably in bouts of 10 minutes of activity or more. One way of achieving 150 minutes of activity is to do 30 minutes on at least five days a week. This could include walking fast, water aerobics, riding a bike, playing doubles tennis or even pushing a lawn mower. You should also try to do some activity that works your muscles - for example heavy lifting or gardening. And what can this relatively small change to your routine do for you? Well there’s strong evidence that people who are active have a lower risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, some cancers, depression and dementia. It’s got to be worth making the effort.

FLAVOURS OF THE WORLD
D
o you ever look back with affection to the days when ‘takeaway’ just meant fish and chips? No, nor do we. Although we love a bit of haddock and fried spuds as much as the next person we have to admit that variety is the spice of life so it’s great that nowadays we have so many wonderful cuisines and flavours to choose from. It can be hard to pick a particular favourite, but if we took a vote it’s pretty certain that Chinese food would come out at or near the top of Britain’s favourites list. So what is it that makes the Chinese taste palette so tempting? According to tradition there are five essential flavours that go to make great Chinese food and learning to balance and mix them is one of the most important skills that any aspiring oriental chef can acquire. These flavours are associated not just with cooking but also with geographical areas and with their health restoring properties for particular parts of the body. Four of the essential flavours correspond approximately to those recognised by Western tradition – salt, sweet, sour and bitter and to these is added a fifth – hot or spicy (sometimes called pungency). The salt flavour is most often found in salt itself, either as a condiment or as a preservative (in the case of brined vegetables for example) and also with soy sauce. It is associated with northern and coastal regions and with the health of the kidneys. Sweetness can be found in foodstuffs like sugar, honey and fruit and is important in the cuisine of eastern China. It is thought to be the most important flavour for regulating the digestion, and to be very good for the spleen. Sourness is popular in Southern areas and in Shanxi province. It is present in lemon, lime, wine, tomatoes and melon and is believed to be beneficial for liver ailments. Bitterness is found in mustard, star anise and garlic. This flavour is important to traditional medicine throughout China. Spiciness is of course vital for great Chinese food. It can be derived from ginger, peppers, cinnamon, mace and cardomom. It’s a vital flavour throughout the country, especially in central regions like Sichuan and Hunan. Medically it is thought to be good for the lungs and for restoring jaded appetites. It’s complicated stuff and it’s no wonder that it can take many years to become a master of all these ingredients and flavours, but if you want to be reminded just how good it is when they’re all blended perfectly just take a trip down to out good friends at Oriental Express – for a great Chinese and Indian buffet every night of the week!

FABULOUS GRIMSBY FISH
Take a trip down dock! There’s an awful lot going on! We all know where the docks are but most of us just drive by without giving them much thought. We forget that they’re a destination to which people come from all over the world. From Alfred Enderby's superb smoked fish to JCS with their gorgeous salmon and Fastline on the North Wall with fresh caught Lincolnshire lobsters and crabs there are so many fantastic foods just for you to try! So get yourselves down dock and treat yourself to the real taste of Grimsby!
King Prawn And Lobster Macaroni Cheese Prep time: 5 minutes Cooking time: 20-25 minutes Serves: 2 Ingredients 8 cooked king prawns 2 cooked lobster tails, halved lengthways 150g macaroni 1 tbsp chopped chives For the sauce 20g butter 20g plain flour 200ml hot semi-skimmed milk 1 tsp mustard 100g mature Cheddar cheese, grated
Method: Preheat the oven to 200°C/fan 180°C/ gas mark 6. Cook the macaroni according to the packet instructions then drain. While the pasta is cooking, melt the butter in a pan, tip in the flour and stir until the mixture forms a smooth paste. Cook gently for a few minutes, then pour in the hot milk, a little at a time, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens. Next, stir in the mustard and most of the cheese, and heat gently until the cheese melts. Add the cooked macaroni, chives and prawns. Place the lobster into two ovenproof dishes and spoon over the pasta mix. Sprinkle with the reserved cheese and place in the oven for about 10-15 minutes until the lobster is piping hot and the cheese on the top starts to turn golden. Serve immediately.

In Business: Rebecca Beaton Accountant Born and bred in Grimsby, accountant Rebecca Beaton switched sides of the Pennines when she went off to Salford University to study accountancy and finance. On qualification, she embarked upon a career as a management accountant in the charity sector, starting with the Trafford Leisure
Trust before moving on to the East Lancashire Hospice where she remained until moving back to North Lincolnshire for family reasons. After five years teaching accountancy skills at Grimsby Institute and Franklin College, Rebecca made the decision to start her own small business accountancy practice and she’s already had considerable success in recruiting clients who appreciate her no nonsense approach and wide experience. She has also kept in touch with the charitable sector, raising money for MacMillan Nurses and assisting Claire Davis-Eaton, whose blog – My Lumpy Bumpy Road to Summer – has given a moving insight into her experience of head and neck cancer. So how does it feel to have moved back into the small business sector? “I love it,” Rebecca replies. “There are no two clients the same. I can be preparing tax returns for a major building company one day and doing accounts for a local dog walking service the next. It’s great to feel that you’re really helping people.”
What Can I Help You With Today?
“It’s such a great area for the kids to grow up in. We’re out in the country so we can take the dogs for long walks in the fields every night. It’s marvellous to be back home.”
will not need a full timer and they will be better served by hiring someone like myself for a couple of hours a week perhaps. It can make a big difference to the finances of a business if they can save money on payroll.
The Peoples: What’s the most important service that you provide for your clients?
Are there any particular industries for whom you offer special help?
RB: By keeping books and records up to date and accurate I not only ensure that they’re complying with the law, but also that they have all the information that they need to make important decisions about their businesses. I also help to make for a more effective use of resources because I free up entrepreneurs from routine bookkeeping allowing them to concentrate on running their business - which is what they are good at.
I think I can offer assistance to business people in almost any sector who want to keep their records in an orderly manner, to allow themselves to focus their energies on their business. However I do have experience of the construction industry payroll system, which is an area which has had a lot of regulatory attention just lately and can be very tricky for the uninitiated.
Is it better to employ someone like yourself or a full time accounts operative? Obviously the answer to that will depend on circumstances but in many cases a business

Add colour and texture to your garden with flowering grasses
F
rom dainty Blue Fescue Grass to majestic Miscanthus, ornamental grasses provide texture, character and form unmatched by any other hardy perennials. Their presence develops through the seasons as bright and colourful foliage is joined by graceful swaying flower heads that last well into winter. In large borders grasses can be planted in bold groups or striking drifts, but many varieties perform well in large patio pots, positioned where their individual shape and arching form can be fully appreciated. Popular grasses for pots include compact Blue Fescue Grass and Slender Sweet Flag ‘Ogon', or taller varieties of Miscanthus such as the Zebra Grass (Miscanthus ‘Zebrinus'). From green to gold, purple to a host of patterned and variegated forms, ornamental grasses come in a wide range of colours, sizes and growing habits. As well as selecting grasses to suit your colour scheme always consider their other qualities, positioning grasses close to paths and seating areas so you can run your hands over their feathery foliage and flowers as you pass. Popular grasses for tactile displays in sensory gardens include the Feathertop Grass (Pennisetum) or annual grasses like Bunny Tails. Taller grasses also add movement to otherwise static displays, catching a summer breeze to add interest and catch the eye. Growing to around two metres in height, the bold form of Golden Oats (Stipa gigantea) is a real showstopper! Or if space allows, try planting a statuesque clump of Pampas Grass, and enjoy their feathery plumes right into winter. Ornamental grasses offer great value, and produce long lasting displays in any garden. Large individuals have a real presence, taking pride of place in beds and borders, while colourful planting combinations can be created with flowering perennials like Black-eyed Susan, Coneflowers and Ice Plants.

Time to get your motor running! The top roads in Europe for your driving holiday
W
hat do you want from your holiday travel? Some of us just want a quick, no fuss trip to a local airport and a week by the pool but for others being behind the wheel is something they love so much it’s an essential part of their holiday experience. If you’re a motoring holiday enthusiast then you’re sure to have favourite routes but where should you be looking to get the best out of your driving experience this holiday season? There are plenty of contenders but a team of motoring writers and scientists have just completed a project to identify the best driving roads in Europe. So what do the scientists think makes a great road? A number of variables were taken into account including great views, gentle bends, positive cambers and good forward visibility. Emptiness and remoteness were positives too as was good weather and having plenty of stopping points and services along the way. When all that had been taken into account and the calculations had been done it was the Atlantic Ocean Road in Norway (pictured above) that came out top with its blend of spectacular views, quality roads and perfect light conditions
