here was some joyous music and poignant words to appreciate on Saturday night (October 8th 2016) as The Minster played host to a concert of music and poetry in aid of the second annual We Shall Overcome week. We Shall Overcome was founded in 2015 and has already spread to become a worldwide grassroots movement of musicians, artists and organisers aimed at expressing anger at the human cost of austerity while doing some positive good in their local communities. The Grimsby concert featured readings by Carolyn Doyley and the Franklin College Young Voices and music from The Life & Times Of The Brothers Hogg who played a set made up of tunes from their new album, Celestial Emporium, plus some old favourites from the first. The line up was completed by the Fusion Creative Choir, playing their first big public gig, whose excellent set included favourites like Hallelujah and of course Pete Seeger’s theme tune for the evening, We Shall Overcome. Admission was by donation of either cash or groceries and the event raised nearly £300 plus a huge collection of much needed stock for the Grimsby Food Bank.

URBAN ARTS 2016 ‘THE 4 ELEMENTS’ IN ST JAMES SQUARE

S

t James Square was filled with music, dance and colour on Saturday 10th September when Our Big Picture Ltd and Lyns Urban Arts brought the second Urban Arts Festival - themed around the four elements of hip hop - to town. Eighteen graffiti artists took part including the amazing Odeith, all the way from Lisbon, whose piece of three dimensional corner art was a firm favourite with the crowd. There were also rap challenges, scratch battles and a breathtaking display of break dancing by the Blood Masterz crew from Leeds, who were joined by local young people who had trained in workshops in the weeks leading up to the event. Some of the artwork is still in situ so if you missed out on the day you can go and take a look or check out the festival’s Facebook page for more images from the day.

PicaRock the electric bike shop

E

lectric bikes can change your life! It might seem at first like an extravagant claim but once we’d spoken to PicaRock founder Richard Soulby we were convinced. Having been a fireman all his working life, Richard was used to keeping fit and it came as a shock to him when he was diagnosed with early onset Parkinson's disease. Of course the illness brought an abrupt end to his career and for a couple of years he was happy to travel round Spain in a motor caravan, enjoying the sights and the weather. But it didn't take long for him to realise that he still needed to maintain his health and fitness levels and cycling, which had been one of his passions in the past, seemed like a good option. The countryside in Spain being frequently mountainous he found at first that he often had problems with the terrain - until he discovered the benefits of electric bikes! Within months he had set up his first shop, which operated successfully for many years and when he decided to move back to the UK to get married it was inevitable that before long before he would be in business again, sharing his passion for electric cycling with the world. "So what's so great about electric bikes?", we asked. "What you have to bear in mind," he explains, "is that these are not mopeds or scooters that you just sit and go. These are proper bikes. There's some welcome assistance available from the electric system if it's needed, but they still have to be pedalled and it's still first class exercise. Electric assisted cycling is great for weight loss, flexibility and enhanced mobility and what's more important it gets you out and about! My first electric bike gave me back my freedom. Now I want to help other people to have the same experience that I did. When people come in the shop for the first time they’re often slightly wary and a bit sceptical. Perhaps

they haven’t ridden a bike for years. Often they don’t see how such a small motor can make a significant difference to their riding. So we invite them to take a test ride and when they get back they’re hooked. Whatever kind of biking experience people are looking for we can partner them with a machine that’s perfect for their needs. We’re main agents for FreeGo, Batribike and Cyclotricity and we also customise to order. So if you don’t see exactly what you want we can probably build it for you. We’re always happy to give advice to anyone who isn’t sure that electric cycling is for them but you have to bear in mind that we’re not just retailers - we’re also enthusiasts, so you’ll have to forgive us if we get a bit carried away sometimes. And remember - an electric bike isn’t just for Christmas - it’s for life!”

same time next year Caxton Theatre October 15th - October 22nd

F

ebruary 17th 1951. East coast liberal accountant George and high school dropout Doris wake up together in a chalet at the Sea Shadows Inn beneath the all seeing and mildly disconcerting eye of a portrait of Harry Truman. On the wall is a Californian flag which refuses to hang straight. Somewhat awkwardly the two exchange life stories and gradually come to realise that they are falling in love. The only problem is that they are both happily married to other people who they have no wish to hurt and are parents of three children each. So they agree to meet up once a year to spend the weekend together, sharing stories good and bad about their spouses and families and bringing each other up to date on family news. Over the course of the next twenty five years we see them grow and change as Doris goes back to school and becomes a successful business woman and George turns Republican. Each year there is news to share, some good, some less so and as the world changes around them, leaving George in particular uncomprehending and resentful, and as Truman gives way to Eisenhower et al the couple find solace, friendship and the comfort of carnality in each other’s company. Some things remain the same however and that flag never does hang straight. Canadian playwright Bernard Slade may not be a household name these days but a new production of his best known work, Same Time Next Year, at The Caxton Theatre, opening on Saturday October 15th offers a terrific evening of bitter sweet comedy handled deftly by director Steve Labourne and the cast of John Ferguson as George and Hayley Browne as Doris. Together they bring the characters to life with compassion, joy and keen ears for the nuances of dialogue which make the play more than just a series of conversations. They also have the happy knack of varying the pace just enough that the action, (essentially just two people talking in a room), never seems to drag, but at the same time does not fall into the trap of histrionics or sentimentality. Along the way there are plenty of laughs – mostly of the laconically ironic school - but there’s some excellent physical comedy as well, particularly when Doris arrives heavily pregnant (in the late 1960s I think) and if you’re looking for an excellent evening’s entertainment then this is definitely as show not to be missed.

Tracey Edges: Girl About Town Barb Wire Dolls Ming City Rockers Dead Dads Yardbirds 13/10/2016

T

his Girl About Town hasn’t been about town all that much of recent, hence the silence. Actually, I have been out and about but doing my own thing (having a solo art exhibition and dipping a toe into the world of retail and back out again) rather than going to see what others are up to. Therefore, it was really great to go back to The Yardbirds Club, Grimsby to see two of my favourite punk bands, one local and one from Greece. If you go to an event organised night put on by Ross Stark’s, Anarchy Entertainment, you are pretty much guaranteed a great line up. Tonight’s entertainment of the anarchic variety, was kicked off by Dead Dads, who, unfortunately, I missed, yet again. This ‘fashionably late’ mode of mine is becoming a bad habit – oops!

I did get to have my ears pleasantly assaulted by some local A T T I T U D E as Ming City Rockers flung themselves into their set with their now accustomed gusto. They don’t take themselves too seriously – just look at their videos to see tongues planted firmly in cheeks - but it is exactly this insouciance that gives them both a vitality and a validity. They don’t give a **** (damn!) Grab their frenetic album, ‘Lemon’ to hear some great tunes which are a blues-punk hybrid of Beach Boys meets Sid Vicious slathered in AC/DC. Their website is: www.mingcityrockers. co.uk and they are on Facebook: www. facebook.com/MingCityRockers and Twitter: @Mingcityrockers If you can get to see this spawn of Immingham play live, please do so – you’re worth it. Ming City Rockers on the bill was a great bonus for me as this was a gig that I was

really, REALLY looking forward to going to. In fact I was really, really looking forward to going to it, 2 years ago when I featured Barb Wire Dolls as the Sunday Girl Artist of the Week (on Sunday Girl on Siren FM). I was thwarted and couldn’t make it – totally gutted. This is my kind of band. Good gutsy, high energy punk. Barb Wire Dolls, who hail from Crete, Greece, and decamped to LA, are the contemporary version of 70s punk, with authentic, loud and great, memorable songs. Lead singer, Isis Queen is this century’s, Debbie Harry on speed, and she is superbly backed up, and swept along, by Pyn Doll on lead guitar, Krash Doll on drums, Iriel Blaque on bass and Remmington on rhythm guitar. They have recently released a brand new album, Desperate, which is released on Motorhead Music. The late Lemmy, took them under his wing and signed them. Obviously he was a chap of great taste in music. BUT.... Are they just too pretty to be Punk? They are surfers and lots of sun-kissed, well sea-washed skin was on full view. I felt that after a gig they would be grabbing their boards and heading out to be all healthy and fit. Maybe I need my Punk to be a bit gnarly with characters that have lived the life to snarl at. Do real punks need to be flawed? Do they need to be, in the words of a book that I am currently reading, by Martin Belk, Pretty Broken Punks, to be truly authentic? At one time I caught myself matching them up with the Spice Girls and trying to decide who was Sporty (Remington), who was Scary (Isis Queen) and so forth. Krash Doll, the drummer could easily have run into the waves for an after shave advert. Let’s face it – this isn’t usually the case with punk bands. Or should it be just about the music? Of course it should. I think that I was just standing far too close! They have got a massive gig list. The tour started at the end of September, with gigs across Europe. There are 7 in the UK, which started, with Camden, London, on the 12th October, Yardbirds, Grimsby on the 13th,

MUSIC

35

followed by Leeds, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Liverpool, Birmingham, then back to Europe before heading to the States. You can never tell how a gig will be in Grimsby. Two years ago Yardbirds was packed, and I expected the same, but it was less than rammed and I thought the audience a bit flat even though Isis Queen did her best to rally the troops. I’ve been to a few gigs like this, in this area, and it’s nothing to do with the quality of the bands. The set was a showcase of Barb Wire Dolls’ latest album Desperate and with the performance, the energy and their trademark, stop-start, jer jer jer jer jerk (thingy/whatzit) it was good to hear the tracks played live. There weren’t any stand out or weak songs, They all had equal weight and I can recommend getting this album and getting to know it. My one disappointment was that they didn’t play I Will Sail – my favourite. Maybe there would have been more to come if the audience had been rowdier for more encore. I felt that it just finished and I wanted a bit more. Anyway, at least I got to see Barb Wire Dolls play, at last, and I’m thoroughly pleased that I did. You can find out all details via www. barbwiredolls.com or just go straight to Barb Wire Dolls on Facebook and on Twitter they are: @BarbWireDolls The album is available from all the usual places, on download, CD or vinyl. Yardbirds Club is on Church Street, Grimsby, off Freeman Street and their website is: www.yardbirdsrocks.co.uk

RUN OR DYE! CLEETHORPES COLOUR RUN 2016

T

here was plenty of colour on display at Meridian Park and around the Boating Lake on Saturday 11th September when more than 3,000 runners took part in the second Cleethorpes Colour Run. The event, raising money for the charity Supporting Local Champions which provides support for local athletes, brought runners from all over the country, all eager to run for fun while being bombarded with coloured dye and it was such a success that all we can really say is “same time next year please” and “how do we get the paint out of these cameras?”

STAY HEALTHY AND ACTIVE WITH MAN’S (&WOMAN’S) BEST FRIEND

A

s we get older it’s vitally important that we stay active and healthy and one of the best ways to keep ourselves in good trim is by keeping a dog. Dogs offer companionship and affection and for owners who live alone they can help reduce stress, lower blood pressure and increase social interaction. So what kind of dogs will suit an elderly owner? There are lots of factors to take into account. How far and how fast can the owner walk? How much time will they wish to spend on grooming? How much space do they have in the house and garden? Size is clearly a factor to consider but energy level is just as important. Anyone who thinks small dogs aren’t tiring has obviously never owned a Jack Russell! Breeds with a reputation for being good, calm companions include Yorkshire Terriers, Boston Terriers and Corgis but if you’re looking for something more exotic try the Lowchen, the Japanese Spitz and the American Eskimo Dog. And if you don’t feel ready to keep a dog of your own why not sign up with Barking Mad (see opposite) who are always looking for people to provide perfect holiday homes for pets. That sounds just the job.

Helen Mcrory in THE DEEP BLUE SEA Helen McCrory (Medea and The Last of the Haussmans at the National Theatre, Penny Dreadful, Peaky Blinders) returns to the National Theatre in Terence Rattigan’s devastating masterpiece, playing one of the greatest female roles in contemporary drama. Tom Burke (War and Peace, The Musketeers) also features in Carrie Cracknell’s critically acclaimed new production. A flat in Ladbroke Grove, West London, 1952: When Hester Collyer is found by her neighbours in the aftermath of a failed suicide attempt, the story of her tempestuous affair with a former RAF pilot and the breakdown of her marriage to a High Court judge begins to emerge. With it comes a portrait of need, loneliness and long-repressed passion. Behind the fragile veneer of post-war civility burns a brutal sense of loss and longing.

If you're searching for an alternative to cold hot dogs and failed rockets then you can't do better than the Waltham Windmill Firework Spectacular on Saturday 5th November. eeping active in old age is vital for health and happiness and at the Grove Care Home in Waltham they offer a wide and varied range of activities for residents to enjoy, from gardening to knitting and cooking. Many of these activities are made possible thanks to the help of local volunteers. Volunteers are very much part of the team at The Grove, supporting staff to enable people to continue to participate in their hobbies and interests. One of the longest standing volunteers is Brenda Danby who has been coming to The Grove for over 18 years. Brenda first visited when her mother-in-law became a resident, she started out by helping at the Summer Fair and other events. Following the death of her husband she continued to visit her mother-in-law. With more time on her hands Brenda was keen to increase her volunteering so agreed to get involved with the gardening club. She now helps at the fortnightly group, as well as supporting the Activity Co-ordinator with armchair exercises, dominoes, crafts, quizzes, games, church services, fair and trips – the only thing she doesn’t like doing is Bingo! Brenda explains - “Being part of a team, supporting the staff that looked after my mother-in-law and giving me a

sense of purpose are the main things that I get out of it. You’ve got to do it to realise how good and rewarding it can be”. Brenda thought that when her mother-in-law died she would stop coming to The Grove, but in fact has become more involved in life at the home. She used to be a nurse so is used to talking to people and enjoys feeling part of a team. “It’s rewarding, often residents with dementia don’t remember me or my name but it’s the enjoyment that they clearly get from the activity we’re doing - that’s the rewarding part.” The Gardening Club is run by Gavin Johnson from Enliven Therapeutic Horticulture, he works with a number of local care homes specialising in encouraging residents with dementia to enjoy gardening. During recent sessions all the residents in the group had a chance to create a display that will be part of the Waltham in Bloom competition which The Grove enters every year. Residents are encouraged to talk about their gardening experiences, name plants and flowers as well as get hands on with planting and watering. “I’ve enjoyed watching them grow and though how nice they looked” commented one resident following a recent Gardening Club session. And that’s what the Grove is all about.

IN THE KNOW

“Free Dogs For Everyone” An Interview with Al Murray A

fter forming the Free United Kingdom Party (FUKP) and running for Parliament in last year’s General Election, Al Murray – The Pub Landlord is set to continue his common-sense revolution up and down the byways of our liberated nation. Mark Wareham caught up with the power behind the people’s publican on the eve of his post-Brexit victory tour, the presciently titled Let’s Go Backwards Together. How are preparations going for the new tour? Fantastic, but at the end of June I had to tear up the show and write another one. But it’s not been a bad thing at all. The referendum result is real food for comedy. Did you have to completely rip it up? When it looked like Remain was going to win, the Pub Landlord was going to be all disappointed. And it’s the reverse, so a lot of the jokes you can flip them over like fried eggs. They’re over easy now, not sunny side up. Was it already in shape pre-referendum? I was waiting. I thought I can’t get too ahead of myself here. This last year, writing comedy has been really hard going. So much has happened that you can’t top. Reality’s on one of its hot streaks where satire and comedy just get completely left behind. I mean Trump, who’d have thought! How did you come up with that tour title Let’s Go Backwards Together before Brexit had even happened? It’s a stroke of genius. What did you know? We came up with the name in May last year just after I’d done the election campaign in Thanet, and it just seemed to fit with the mood around that campaign. And more than a year later, it’s even more on the money. It’s ridiculous. Look at Jeremy Corbyn. It’s 1983 again! Everyone’s going backwards. We were very lucky picking this title, I have to say. If the Landlord is ahead of the game politically, do you see him as some kind of seer? Yes, he’s definitely a visionary. Given the Referendum decision, has any of the Landlord’s thunder been stolen? How happy is he about it?

His only reservation is that it’s the only thing that’s kept him going the past 20 years, so take the thing away and it might do him in. Hating Brussels got him through the divorce. The show’s all about breathing the sweet air of freedom. We’ve got a freedom clock showing how many days of freedom. Across the years has the Landlord become increasingly politicised? I think the things he was talking about have caught up with him. He’s always seen lots of conspiracy theories everywhere and that’s gone completely mainstream now. I think he’s always been this political. Last year when I ran in the election, people were saying, ‘You’ve got to stick to comedy.’ And I was saying, ‘No, this is a comedy campaign.’ I’ve got a manifesto saying I want to add 20p to the pound and make it worth 1.20… That’s a joke. But people took it seriously. That’s the risk you run. Who could possibly have thought that? Eejits on Twitter. Lots of people calling themselves Knights Templar and Eternal Defenders of the White Realm who were really angry with me cos they saw an opportunity to vote for a potentially mainstream political party rather than one of their headbanging fringe groups. Even though the Landlord’s broadly on the same side? Well they’re annoyed that I’m taking the piss. There are some very odd ideas about democracy, that you’re going to steal votes and that I’m undermining the democratic process. What, by taking part in it? Surely a lying politician is undermining the democratic process more than a comedian saying, ‘Hey, aren’t these manifestos all bullshit.’ Some of your policies did make sense though. What, Free dogs for everyone? A lot of the campaigning was really inane. And again what happens is you’re writing jokes about campaigning and then they outstrip you. We did a fag packet with six pledges on it two days before the Ed Stone [Ed Miliband’s Labour policies written on a giant stone tablet] and they’re indistinguishable from one another. Apart from the Free Dogs pledge, they’re the same. Where they had ‘Build a strong economy’, ours was ‘Make more stuff and make profit from it.’ The whole thing was a fascinating experience and has informed a lot of why this show’s

IN THE KNOW

called Let’s Go Backwards Together, and part of the show is that I’m carrying on the common-sense revolution. The 318 people who voted for me are the tiny acorn, and you’re the mighty oak. That’s the launch pad. Last year I had my brush with destiny, it’s time to carry on the fight. Moving on from the politics, did you think you’d still be the Landlord 20 years on? No, it was supposed to get me through the next 10 minutes, not the next two decades. It’s ridiculous. It’s lasted because we’ve had bursts of exposure and then back to normal, just gigging and sticking with it. I try and write a new show every two years. It’s turnover. That’s how you keep it going. Most landlords are old blokes anyway. I saw a clip from ages ago and I looked so young. I thought, ‘How did that work?’ You’ve said you don’t know what you’d be doing if you weren’t a comedian, but what would the Landlord be doing if he wasn’t running a pub? Oh he’d be a steward on a cross-Channel ferry. He’d be coming up for early retirement with a terrible pension. If I’d have been of my father’s generation, he’d have been a sergeant-major, a bloke who thinks he’s in charge, but isn’t.

57

Finally, will the Landlord be bantering away with the front rows on the new tour in his trademark inimitable style? Yes there’ll be more of that on this tour. In Edinburgh I was tempted to see just how long I could do it for before the moment arrives where I really ought to do some material. How do you remember everyone’s names? I can just do it, I don’t know how. I’ve not got a mind palace like Derren Brown. It’s just remembering. But if you get it wrong, sometimes a whole crowd will shout, ‘No, he’s called Dave.’ And will we be getting any more glimpses into the Landlord’s personal life? There will be some. And there’s songs as well. I always end with a song, but there’s a couple of extras this time. My mum used to say you should always end with a song. And then I started ending with a song and she wasn’t so sure. Al Murray will be appearing as his alter-ego The Pub Landlord at Grimsby Auditorium on Thursday 10 November for further info visit: www.thepublantdlord.com

ith the economy being how it is most of us know that the safest place to invest our savings is in property - but what about when you come to sell up? What's the best way of maximising the return on your investment, without taking risks and breaking the bank along the way? Some expensive upgrades can actually reduce the value of a home - so it pays to be careful when making your choices - to make sure you get the best possible value for money.

buyer will too. If your master bedroom can be updated to take an en suite that almost always repays its cost. And if everything is looking shipshape then you could always try adding space. Extensions are great but a conservatory will also add value and provided you don’t exceed half your plot size they’re exempt from many planning regulations. Nobody likes to come home to a freezing home so maybe consider a new fireplace. It can change the whole look of a room and there's a fantastic selection available (check out Inspirations on our back page for ideas and free advice). And what about improvements that cost a little less? Well in an online age having really great broadband can be a big advantage and simply spending some money on tidying up a property, repainting and repointing for example, can pay back its cost several times over. Maybe you could give the garden a makeover - maybe get rid of ugly trees that block light and nobody loves a leylandii! Lastly remember that whatever you choose to do if your house doesn’t sell soon you may have to live with it for a while. So don’t do something you’ll live to regret! Happy house hunting!

.... so the time has come to sell the dream home ....

Let's start with the essentials. Sound electrics and plumbing, a good roof with no leaks, central heating and freedom from damp and woodworm. If there's a problem with any of these your house is seriously compromised. Get them fixed first before you consider anything else. Double glazing is almost always a good investment but remember that PVC frames don't suit period properties and if you're in a conservation area they may even be forbidden. New kitchens and bathrooms can make a huge differences to the selling price of a property but play it safe - don't install anything too unusual. Just because you like something doesn't mean that a potential

NOVEMBER 16th AT GRIMSBY AUDITORIUM

The Nutcracker The Beloved Christmas Classic Dreams come true this year as the Russian State Ballet bring the festive family favourite ballet The Nutcracker to the Auditorium. With music by Pyotr Tchaikovsky, featuring an impressive cast, accompanied by a live orchestra with over 30 musicians and directed and choreographed by former Bolshoi Ballet Soloist, Konstantin Uralsky it promises to be a fantastic production that will delight young and old. The Nutcracker continues to capture the hearts and imagination of generations of theatregoers. It is a truly captivating piece of theatre, a wonderful introduction to ballet for anyone who has never experienced it and still so special to anyone who has. Based on The Nutcracker and the Mouse King written by E.T.A. Hoffmann, it tells the story of Marie, a rather sad little girl, whose godfather Drosselmeyer gives her a nutcracker doll as a present on Christmas Eve, which turns into a prince. But this is no ordinary nutcracker of course because this is the ultimate fairy tale where goodness and beauty will always triumph. The Russian State Ballet and Opera House bring the passion and vibrancy of Russian character to this well known ballet. It has built an international reputation for delivering performances of outstanding quality, and wherever in the world they play they never fail to delight audiences.

For wonderful winter colour just go in search of berried treasure

t’s been a long hot flower filled summer but things are cooling down fast and if you’re looking for winter interest for your borders then you should consider investing in some berries. Berry bearing trees and shrubs come into their own in autumn, creating colourful displays that can last well into winter. From elder berries to rose hips, crab apples to firethorns, the addition of berry plants adds a new dimension to any garden and also provides home grown food for hungry birds and wildlife too, enhancing their appeal and value to any garden. Evergreen shrubs provide structure and form throughout the year, but many produce early displays of flowers followed by autumn berries. One of the best compact shrubs for borders or patio pots are Skimmia, with their glowing red berries. You should also check out Viburnum, a hardy shrub with distinctly veined evergreen foliage that produces the most unusual metallic looking blue black berries. For seasonal pots of autumn colour include a small Gaultheria mucronata carrying brilliant berries in pink, red or pure white. Combined with pansies and violas, trailing ivy, heather, carex or skimmia your pots will put on a display that lasts for months. Trained against walls and fences, firethorn or pyracanthus is a valuable evergreen shrub. Its thorny stems make it a great choice for producing secure garden boundaries, but don’t let the spines put you off. They provide valuable nesting sites for birds, flowers that attract bees, and red, orange or yellow berries to feed birds into winter. You should also consider the cotoneaster family, attractive ornamental shrubs with year round appeal. The arching stems with herringbone patterned stalks of Cotoneaster horizontalis make it an excellent choice to carpet banks and low borders or train up to cover bare fences. Birds love these berries, quickly stripping stems bare as they stock-up for winter. With such a rich and diverse range of plants to choose from it really is possible to fill your borders with berried treasure this autumn!

“When you knit a gift for a family member or loved one it’s always special W because it’s invested with all the care and love that you put into it.”

Purls of Wisdom

e all know that fashion can lead to some surprises on occasion but there can’t be many turnarounds in fortune to match that achieved by yarncraft in the past ten years. In that time we’ve seen knitting and crochet go from being something your granny used to do to being a young people’s craft de jour, bang on trend in a retro age. So what changed? Well partly it was a people thing, the arrival of a generation who were fascinated by the styles of the post war period, combined with a response to the era of austerity which brought home

A Good Yarn is a wool shop and so much more! It’s also a hub for everyone who loves knitting, whether they’re beginners or more experienced. There are knitting and crochet workshops, a regular crochet and knit club and a range of monthly activities which have covered techniques including beaded and lace knitting and finishing techniques. Kate Roberts is the owner and she’s a dedicated knitter with a real passion for her craft who likes nothing better than helping newcomers to learn the basics and she’s very excited at the moment because A Good Yarn has been nominated in the Best Local Independent Yarn Store: North Of England category in the British Knitting Awards 2016! Whether you’re a novice or an expert there’s sure to be something for you at A Good Yarn - just pop in and have a chat with Kate and her team and let’s get those needles clicking.

yarn styles and new modish patterns. Knitting and crochet were no longer guilty pleasures - they were hobbies that women - and men too - could enjoy in public, on the bus, in the park, even down the pub! So what are the new trends in knitting for the future? Chunky knits are definitely in, and super chunky on huge size 50 needles has arrived in style, and anything with long tassels - scarves, jackets, even dresses. Black and white looks set to be a colour scheme for 2017 and heavy cable looks and Fair Isle are set for a return. So don’t delay - get your fingers running and head down on the highway to your local yarnshop and see what they’ve got to offer. We think you’ll find some surprises in store.

We’ve pointed out before that Grimsby Sewing and Knitting is one of those TARDISlike shops that seem to be bigger inside than out – well now it’s even more true because proprietors Paul and Linda Haynes have expanded their empire to include the shop next door – giving them four shop widths of space to fill with top quality haberdashery. The new shop is exclusively devoted to woolcrafts and stocks a fantastic range of yarns from top names like King Cole, Stylecraft, Woolcraft, Cygnet and Sirdar plus needles, hooks, patterns and everything you might need to get the most out of your craft. They’re always happy to give advice too, so if you’re new to the world of woolcraft just drop in one day for a chat and they’ll sort you out with all you need to get started on a project that’s affordable and achievable too!

MOTORING

WINTER’S ON THE WAY SO DON’T FORGET THESE VITAL CHECKS Antifreeze

Check coolant level regularly and, if required, top up with a mixture of the correct type of antifreeze. Your garage should check concentration to ensure adequate cold temperature protection.

Battery

The most common cause of winter breakdowns. A battery more than five years old may struggle in the cold - get it checked and replaced if necessary to avoid the inconvenience of an unplanned failure.

Fuel

Keep at least a quarter of a tank in case of unexpected delay.

Lights

Check and clean all lights regularly and carry spare bulbs.

Tyres

Should have at least 3mm of tread for winter motoring. Consider winter tyres for improved safety. Check pressures at least every fortnight.

Windscreen

Reduce dazzle from the low sun by keeping the screen clean inside and out. Now is a good time to renew worn wiper blades.

Screen Wash

Use a 50% mix of a good quality screen wash to reduce the chance of freezing in frosty weather.

Locks

Stop doors freezing shut with a thin coat of polish or Vaseline on rubber door seals.

and don’t forget to carry a shovel!
