Well the sun has been shining, the daffodils are nodding gently in the breeze and it looks like we’ve finally shaken off the winter. It’s got to be good news. In this issue we’ve got some pictures and a report from the YMCA Humber Sleep Over and coverage of the local elections to the Young People’s Parliament. There’s news about another fascinating art installation in Grimsby Minster and a visit to the Immingham Museum. If you haven’t been already we suggest you pay them a visit.

HEART SKIPPING A BEAT? OLLY MURS ON THE WAY TO MARKET RASEN RACES
T
here was a time, not so long ago, when the only time major music artists ever came to these parts was if they’d been blown off course by bad weather while migrating between warmer climates but nowadays the great Lincolnshire pop music drought seems to have come to an end. In the last couple of years we’ve had visits from Sir Elton John at the Lincolnshire Showground, Tom Jones and Jess Glynne at Market Rasen Racecourse, Example and Simple Minds at Grimsby Auditorium. It’s not stopping there however and we’ve got plenty to look forward to in 2017 including Sir Cliff Richard at Lincoln Castle in June and everybody’s favourite heart beat skipping X-Factor winner Olly Murs who will play a purpose built arena at Market Rasen racecourse on June 2nd. Olly has had a great 2016 and his fourth successive No.1 Album - 24 HRS - has made him officially the most successful solo artist ever to come from the X Factor. New single Years And Years is the album’s centre piece; an expansive, explosive, spine tingling belter and follows the radio favourites You Don’t Know Love and Grow Up which Olly recently performed on the X Factor. Tickets are on sale and you can book and get more information at marketrasen.thejockeyclub.co.uk. Should be a fantastic night to remember. We’ll see you there!

ARE YOU GETTING READY FOR THE MAYOR’S CHARITY CHALLENGE?
I
f you’d like to be part of a fantastic charity event over the May Day Bank Holiday weekend (Saturday April 29th to Monday May 1st) you’ll be delighted to hear about The Mayor’s Charity Challenge which promises a weekend of exercise, fun and physical challenges, covering the whole borough from Immingham to Wold Newton and all points between. Setting out from the Meridian marker in Cleethorpes, the Mayor and her team will cycle the length and breadth of the borough, accompanied by a team of helpers and performing challenges along the way. Challenges will be set by local individuals and businesses
and if you’ve got any ideas then the organisers would love to hear from you. Along the way there’ll be plenty of opportunities to raise money for vital local charities, including the Nidd Diabetes Fund (established in memory of local jeweller John Nidd) and the Cat Zero programme, as well as raising awareness of the important issues surrounding both causes and, of course, the health and lifestyle benefits of cycling. The Health Tree Foundation, formerly the Scartho Road Hospital Charity, will also be involved and will be attending many of the weekend’s events and challenges, accompanied by their new mascot, Scrubs the Bear. There’ll also be a Go Ride session for kids at St Hugh’s Hospital and a
young people’s biathlon at St James School. Additionally community groups along the route are being encouraged to organise events to celebrate the weekend, including offering refreshments or setting challenges for the Mayor and her team to complete. Speaking at the launch the head of St James’ School, Dr John Price said that North East Lincolnshire is a fantastic area for cycling and running and that the event will help raise awareness of the joys of cycling on the Wolds and bring people into the area. The event has a fundraising target of at least £10,000 and the Mayor explained the importance of the two charities which are close to her heart. “I feel that we have a responsibility to do more”, she said. “I want this event to help bring the community together and to be a success for everyone. I would like it to be a part of the legacy of my year as Mayor”. If you’d like to get involved with the Mayor’s Charity Challenge contact Grimsby Town Hall or phone 01472 324109.

Thinking about starting a new business? Here are our six top tips. Do something you’re passionate about You’re going to be putting most of your life into this business so you’d best choose to do something you love and care about – otherwise it’s going to get stale pretty fast. You probably want to go into business for yourself to get away from the stuff you hate. Don’t bring it with you. Know your flow More businesses go bust because of cash flow problems than for any other reason. Learn when to make allowances and when to play hardball and try to keep your account in credit. You never know when a rainy day is coming but you can make sure you have enough cash in the bank to buy a good umbrella. Stick with your partners Communication is always important but never more so then when you’ve gone into business together. A falling out between partners can have disastrous consequences so make sure that you’;re always on the same page.
Always expect the unexpected Have a good contingency plan so that if there’s a problem you can work round it. It could be a major financial or technical problem. It could be as simple as a sick child. Whatever the risks are, plan for them and eliminate them. Take responsibility The buck stops with you but don’t let that get you down. It’s what you went into business for. Isn’t it? When you’re in business for yourself there’s no-one else to blame. Remember that your accountant is not just a number cruncher. They’re also your best source of business advice and support. Whatever problem you’ve got they’ve probably seen it and sorted it out before for somebody else. Choose a good one and make them your first port of call when times are difficult. You could start by giving our good friend Rebecca Beaton a call - she’s an expert at making small businesses grow into bigger businesses.
Rebecca Beaton Accountancy Services Do you sometimes feel that your business could be much more successful if you weren’t so bogged down in paperwork all the time? KEEPING FIT WITH WALKING FOOTBALL Retirement can mark the beginning of the happiest time of your life but it can also present a range of problems including staying fit and healthy. Experts like Grimsby Lifts and the Mobility Centre can help eliminate some of the worst effects and for many people owning a dog, or if that’s too much then maybe offering holiday accommodation for one, can be the answer. Try taking a look at Barking Mad on the page opposite if it sounds like it might suit you. For others swimming of exercise classes might suit best but one of the most popular options nowadays is walking football. Walking football is football in which running, jogging and sprinting are not permitted. Free kicks are given to the opposition when an opponent breaks into anything other than a fast stride. Who is it for? Well it’s for anybody who wants to play football at a slower pace. Usually it is played by people aged 50 plus but it can suit just about anyone. Walking football is great for people who want to continue playing football at a pace that suits them.

EXCELLENCE REWARDED FOR LOCAL TOUR OPERATOR
HOUGH’S NOMINATED FOR NATIONAL PRIZE
I
t won’t come as a surprise to anyone who has had the pleasure of travelling with them, but we’re pleased to tell you that Hough’s of Lincolnshire have been nominated for a major prize at this year’s British Coach Tourism Awards. It’s a well deserved tribute to the exceptional service offered by this friendly, family run company which has been in operation for a little over ten years since owners Richard and Rosina Hough sold their house and bought their first coach. At first they just did work for other operators but the turning point came when the Spittal of Glenshee Hotel in Perthshire rang to offer a 5 day tour which was advertised and sold out the same evening. The mailing list which, up to then stood at 25 went up to 250 that night. This led to 2 more tours that year including a Christmas trip which also sold out. The company now operates around 130 tours a year and the mailing list consists of over six thousand addresses – not bad in 10 years! Hough’s now own five coaches and offer a variety of holidays from 2 to 8 days duration both in Britain and on the Continent. In addition there’s a huge variety of day trips on offer so something for everyone. The drivers are all friendly, helpful and caring and the company never use feeder coaches, just operating a local pick up route. The Coach Tourism Awards are held on the March 22nd at the National Motorcycle Museum, Birmingham so fingers crossed for the Hough’s team! Best of luck. We’ll let you know how they get on in our next issue.
Images left; Favourite destinations for Hough’s tours include Bletchley Park, the Lake District and London.

THE AREA’S BEST KEPT SECRET?
IMMINGHAM MUSEUM & HERITAGE CENTRE A FASCINATING COLLECTION
Immingham Museum was established in 1970 and after residing at a number of venues in the town it has now found a permanent home in the Civic Centre next to the library. Staffed and organised by volunteers it’s a loving tribute to the history of the town. Inside there’s a fascinating collection covering everything from the Pilgrim Fathers to the construction of the Docks, the arrival of the Great Central Railway and the emergence of Tin Town. There are Roman artefacts, an Edwardian apothecary shop, a 1950s grocers and a remarkable collection of kitchen and laundry equipment that will have the kids guessing for hours. And when you tell them we’re not sure that they’ll believe you. Our favourite has to be the diving costume with the huge helmet and the two model railway layouts which represent the original Immingham Docks Coaling system. Something for the inner child in every Dad. We had a great visit there recently to take some pictures for a new educational project and you can be sure we’ll be going again soon. Immingham Museum is open Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 1pm to 4pm. Admission is by donation. More information at www. imminghammuseum.org. Keep your eye open for their regular special exhibitions – we’ll do our best to keep you posted.

CLEETHORPES
CLEETHORPES WELCOMES BACK THE GOOD TIMES! It’s been an exciting couple of years in Cleethorpes. There’ve been music festivals, the national Armed Forces Weekend and excellent events like the Colour Run and It’s A Knockout. The town has been favourably reviewed in the national press and Sea View Street was nominated for, and only narrowly failed to win a national Great British High Street Award. St Peter’s Avenue is looking good too with new retailers and plenty of festivities to mark the 150th Anniversary celebrations at St Peter’s Church. It’s been a welcome turnaround in fortunes for the town which had been criticised in the past for being a little the worse for wear but now that the corner has been turned we’re confident that the next few years will see continued improvement.
UNDER NEW OWNERSHIP: BARNET’S HAIRDRESSERS There’s a new name above the door at Barnets hairdressers in Sea View Street since Julie Whotton has taken over. Julie has worked at the shop for several years so she knows all the regulars and staff really well and she’s confident that she and her team will continue to provide the excellent service that Barnets customers have enjoyed in the past. Best of luck from us – we’re sure you’ll be a huge success!
Barnets Hairdressers
Barnets of Sea View has been one of our favourite gentleman’s hairdressers for a long time and we’ve no doubt that it will continue to be so now that former stylist Julie Whotton has taken over as the new owner. She isn’t planning any major changes however. “We have an excellent customer base who seem to like what we do” Julie explains, “so we we must be doing something right.” How does she feel about stepping up to become proprietor of her own business? “It’s a really exciting time but I’m lucky because I have exceptional staff to rely on. We’ve been together for years and we all get on really well so it’s like going to work to see your friends. You’ll sometimes hear people say that women don’t work well together but don’t you believe a word of it. A team of strong, able women is the best team there is!”

FREEMAN STREET Things are looking up on Freeman Street and Cleethorpe Road these days. There are plenty of new retailers opening up and the market looks great after its multi million pound overhaul. There always seem to be a bustle about the area now that wasn’t there before and when work on the tower blocks is complete and we have a whole new skyline then it should really be something.

We’ve pointed out before that Grimsby Sewing and Knitting is one of those TARDISlike shops that seem to be bigger inside than out – well now it’s even more true because proprietors Paul and Linda Haynes have expanded their empire to include the shop next door – giving them four shop widths of space to fill with top quality haberdashery. The new shop is exclusively devoted to woolcrafts and stocks a fantastic range of yarns from top names like King Cole, Stylecraft, Woolcraft, Cygnet and Sirdar plus needles, hooks, patterns and everything you might need to get the most out of your craft. They’re always happy to give advice too, so if you’re new to the world of woolcraft just drop in one day for a chat and they’ll sort you out with all you need to get started on a project that’s affordable and achievable too!
MAKE A CHILD’S LIFE BRIGHTER
OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD NEEDS YOU!
AT THE ICE HOUSE, VICTOR STREET
H
ere’s a seasonal thought. What would it have been like if Christmas had come and gone when you were a child without you receiving any presents at all? Pretty bad we reckon. And yes we do know it’s early March but for some people the task of brightening up Christmas for children all around the world is a twelve month challenge. The charity Operation Christmas Child Samaritan’s Purse is the biggest children’s Christmas charity in the world. In 2016 they delivered 882,647 shoebox gifts to 17 countries in Africa, Eastern Europe, Central Asia and the Middle East. Their Grimsby Branch is at the Ice House Christian Centre on Victor Street and meets every Wednesday from 10am-3pm. They welcome volunteers and donations of recycling goods to help them get their shoebox gifts ready. The list of items they collect is too long to give here but includes craft materials, pens and pencils, video cases, wools and yarns, knitted toys and puppets, toiletries and small games.
They also collect ties which they make into wonderful gift sets – you may have seen them on television recently when the team were sent a tie by local celebrity presenter Peter Levy. If you have time to spare to help or items to donate you can get in touch with the OCC Grimsby team via their Facebook page or by ringing Denise on 07790 609033. And you can be sure that your efforts will make children’s lives happier all over the world on Christmas Day.

A night in the cold in support of housing justice .....
THE YMCA HUMBER SLEEP EASY 2017 I
t’s Friday evening in Freshney Place. The customers and shop staff have gone home. The shutters have been lowered. The builders have shut down for the night. Everywhere is quiet. Everywhere other than Level 6 of the West Car Park that is. There it’s a hive of activity, the empty building echoing to the sound of unfurling duct tape and the vigorous folding of cardboard as more than seventy volunteers work to construct their accommodation for the night from boxes and plastic sheeting. And although they’re under the cover of a roof there are big open windows on all sides so it’s still pretty cold. Certainly not a place you’d choose to stay the night without a very good reason. Welcome to the YMCA Humber’s Sleep Easy 2017. The Sleep Easy began in 2011 and since then it has raised more than £125,000 for the YMCA and other charities. At the time of writing £4,000 has been collected from this year’s event and there’s lots more on the way. If you’d like to donate then there are contact details below. This is the fourth year that Freshney Place has played host to the event. Food and drink has been generously provided by Tesco. But it’s still going to be a tough old night and when we visit there are some serious construction projects underway. There’s a wide variety of styles of build on show, from the simple but effective Toblerone favoured by bank manager Simon Smith (a veteran of four Sleep Easys) through stockades that look as if they were designed to repel nocturnal ambush rather than keep out the cold. At one end of the car park a magnificent nine person bivouac has been constructed by a team from Rotaract, while several others feature silver foil, neat windows and even eviction notices. Everyone looks like they’re enjoying themselves but there’s also a commendable seriousness about the event. Talking to some of the participants I get an idea of how serious people are about this project and how committed to working to eliminate the suffering caused by homelessness. Simon Smith explains that it’s the raising of money and awareness that motivates him to spend the night in the cold while mother and daughter team Louise Zaremba and
Augustine Harsent stress that homelessness is an issue that everyone should care about because it could happen to anyone. Jonathan Byrne, YMCA Humber’s Events and Marketing Lead explains why the Sleep Easy is so important. “The support for Sleep Easy has been incredible over the past six years but regrettably the problem of youth homelessness is one that is worsening. Rising rents, a lack of affordable housing and welfare support cuts mean that it is increasingly hard for young people to thrive in independent living. We house over a hundred young people each night of the year and without places like YMCA, they would have nowhere to live.” “As a YMCA, it is our dream to one day be able to build a multipurpose campus style project that provides all the opportunities that young people need to belong, contribute and thrive in their local community and with the support of the public and businesses through events like Sleep Easy, we believe that we can turn that dream into reality.” You can find more information about Sleep Easy and the work of YMCA Humber by visiting www.sleep-easy. co.uk. For further information call Jonathan Byrne on 01472 359 621 or email sleepeasy@ymca-humber.com.

EASTER
Sweet teeth at the ready! Time for some
Easter Eggcelence!
E
aster is on its way and the shops have been full of chocolate eggs since the day after Christmas - so you’ve had plenty of time to choose what you’ll be giving to your nearest and dearest this year, although of course we’d recommend that you take a look at what’s on offer down at Sweet Indulgence in St Peter’s Avenue before you make a final decision. Eggs have been a part of Easter festivities for a long time and they were popular even in preChristian times. Decorated ostrich eggs more than five thousand years old have been found in ancient Egyptian tombs and some examples from Africa are thought to go back tens of thousands of years! In the Christian tradition the giving of eggs at Easter celebrates new life, recalling that Jesus, after dying on the cross, rose from the dead. The empty shell is said to represent the empty tomb from which he emerged. There is a wide variety of decoration techniques in use around the world. In the Orthodox church eggs are usually dyed red to symbolise the blood of Christ, while in Eastern
Europe a batik wax resist process is use to add bright colours to the shells. And once you’ve decorated your eggs what to do you do with them? In Germany they tie them with ribbon (easier said than done we reckon) and hang them from trees. Can’t see that catching on round here. In many countries parents tell their children the Easter Bunny has hidden their chocolate eggs and they race to find them round the house or garden. Meanwhile the parents sit in the house eating all the eggs themselves and laughing deviously. In the United States egg rolling is a popular Easter game and one of the most well known events is held annually on the White House lawn with children and parents pushing their eggs across the grass with wooden spoons under the watchful eye of the President.
In many countries there is a tradition of egg battling where children hold the eggs and smash them together with the least damaged egg being declared the winner. In the North of England this is called egg tapping or egg jarping and the eggs are called Pace eggs. There are also dancing celebrations where eggs are scattered on the ground and children and adults attempt to dance through them without causing any damage. If you fancy pushing the boat out this year you might care there are plenty of claimants to the title of World’s Most Expensive Easter Egg. Most are really jewellery but the priciest real chocolate egg is the Giant Golden Speckled egg by William Curley, priced at £7,000 and full of chocolates with flavours like Japanese black vinegar, and juniper and cassis. And if that’s not enough there’s a hand carved $66,000 Easter Bunny with diamond eyes. Sounds perfect, we’ll have two.

unsthorpe Stories is a local history project backed by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and organised by Fusion Creative, the urban arts project whose move into St Martin’s Church (at the junction of Sutcliffe Avenue and Scartho Road) a year ago has been a huge success. According to Project Co-ordinator Josie Moon: “Ever since Fusion moved into St Martin’s late last year we’ve felt that there was scope for a really good local history project. We knew there had been some great work done by a few dedicated community historians in the past, but we felt we could begin some conversations that would empower people to tell their stories in an honest, thought provoking and interesting way.” The project launched at Centre4 with an event highlighting the role of local history within communities, which included presentations by writer Brian Lavery, whose acclaimed book The Headscarf Revolutionaries tells the story of Hull’s Triple Trawler Disaster in 1968, which sparked a fishwives' uprising and Nick Triplow, whose books The Women They Left Behind and Distant Water tell the stories of the trawlermen of Grimsby and the women and communities who supported them.

MEETING THE CANDIDATES FOR
THE UNITED KINGDOM YOUTH PARLIAMENT AT GRIMSBY TOWN HALL
I
t seems like barely a day goes by these days without a news story about bad things done by young people, so it’s refreshing to hear a good news story from time to time and when we received an invitation to go to Grimsby Town Hall to meet the candidates for the role of our area’s representative in the UK Youth Parliament and their deputies we jumped at the chance. The UK Youth Parliament has more than 360 members, elected in annually throughout the UK. Any young person aged 11-18 can stand or vote. In the past two years one million young people have voted in UK Youth Parliament elections. Once elected MYPs organise events and projects, run campaigns and influence decision makers on the issues which matter most to young people. All MYPs have the opportunity to meet once a year at the UK Youth Parliament Annual Sitting where members come together to take part in workshops, debate, create and change national manifesto policy, and network. It takes place on a university campus over three days. The event includes keynote speeches from political figures, followed by question and answer sessions.
In our area there are three teams, each made up of a candidate and a deputy, standing for election and they’ll be voted on by students at local schools and colleges. Our picture shows the candidates and deputies on the Town Hall staircase. Each team has a set of issues on which they are campaigning including the incorporation of Curriculum For Life, (which involves life skills, finance and politics) into the schools’ syllabus, access to reasonably priced transport for young people, and issues related to body image. According to Pippa Curtin, Voice and Influence Practitioner at the NELC Young People’s Support Service, “The UK Youth Parliament has been enabling young people to have their voices heard at a national level since 2000. It is an amazing opportunity for young people to engage in politics and democracy, whether they are standing to be elected or voting for the team they would like to represent young people. The team elected will start their 2 year term in March 2017 and will have the opportunity to represent young people from North East Lincolnshire through regional conventions an annual sitting an annual ballot on issues important to young people and debates held in the House of Commons every year.” Regardless of which team wins the election we’d like to wish them all the best for the future and we’ve no doubt that, one way or another, they’re all headed for success. If you’d like to find out more about the United Kingdom Youth Parliament in North East Lincolnshire contact Pippa Curtin at pippa.curtin@nelincs.gov.uk
