Well that was a busy month. We’ve been to the RAF Scampton Air Show and the Urban Arts Festival, watched Ken Doherty in action at The Beachcomber and seen the fantastic Sharleen Spiteri rock the Auditorium with her band Texas. Not bad at all we’d say and there are lots more exciting events coming up in the next few weeks so with any luck we’ll have a good autumn. In this issue you’ll find our Top Town round up plus news from Great Grimsby Community Choir and Scartho Community Library. Take care and keep warm and we’ll see you in six weeks with our Christmas edition.

GREAT GRIMSBY COMMUNITY CHOIR FINDS A NEW HOME AT ST MARKS CHURCH

n recent years singing, especially choral singing, has become one of the most popular social activities in the UK, due in some part to increased television exposure but mostly, we think, thanks to the joy that raising one’s voice in song can create. If you’ve got a hankering for flexing your vocal chords in the company of some like minded others then you might care to pay a visit to Great Grimsby Community Choir at their new home at St Mark’s Church on Laceby Road. They meet every Monday at 7.30pm and anyone aged 14 and over can join. There’s no audition all you need is enthusiasm. The fee is £4 per week. They’re a friendly and inclusive group, meeting weekly, performing regularly and with a wide variety of material in their ever expanding repertoire. For further information please contact musical director Josie Moon (pictured right) at msjosiemoon@gmail.com.

BRIGHOWGATE & WELLOWGATE

THE MAD HATTERS TEA ROOM BRINGS A TASTE OF WONDERLAND TO TOP TOWN!

T

hings have been getting curiouser and curiouser at the junction of Wellowgate and Brighowgate for several weeks now with the arrival of several pink flamingoes and some larger than life playing cards, signifying the arrival of the area’s newest cafe, restaurant and party venue – The Mad Hatters Tea Room. Proprietor Emily Cook has made her new venture into a celebration of her favourite books and as soon as you walk in you know that you’ve come to a place where it’s always tea time. The tea room offers breakfasts and lunches plus take aways and is also open for afternoon teas (so long as they can get the dormouse out of the pot). They’ve got lots of delicious looking cakes on offer too so why not treat yourself. Go on, you know you want to! They’re open from 8am to 4pm Monday to Saturday and for private functions on Sundays. At the moment they’re taking names for children’s halloween parties but there’ll be lots more to choose from in future so next time you’re in top town why not pop through to The Mad Hatter’s Tea Room and try a taste of Wonderland!

Visit between 21st-31st October for the spooky afternoon tea experience and there'll be halloween themed childrens parties Sunday 29th-Tuesday 31st October. Places are going fast so book soon!

grimsby’s urban arts festival 2017

14

There was a colourful and fascinating mixture of art, music and dance on display on Saturday 9th September when the Minster and St James Square played host to the 3rd Grimsby Urban Arts Festival. Titled ‘The Four Elements’ the festival celebrated the culture that originated in New York in the late 1970s including rapping, deejaying, break dancing and graffiti writing. Together these phenomena became Hip Hop and their influence and can be heard and seen in urban musical and graphic culture to this day. There were nearly twenty graffiti artists from all over the country painting on the day, each with their own unique

TOP TOWN trademark style, plus a selection of art and craft stalls in the minster and music on the lawns and although the weather wasn’t kind there were always plenty of visitors in attendance to watch the artists at work. The festival has certainly become one of our favourite events on the calendar and we’ll be keeping our fingers crossed for more next year!

GRIMSBY FISH

F

or Nottingham it's lace. For Leicester it's boot making. For Melton Mowbray it's pork pies. Some industries are just so closely associated with places they almost seem to share an identity. That's why Grimsby is still a fish town, despite the collapse of the fishing industry.

Grimsby folk were fishermen (and occasionally fisherwomen) from the middle ages onwards and especially since the development of the docks and the arrival of the railways during the early Victorian era. Famously it is said that in the heyday of the industry you could walk from one side of the docks to the other without getting your feet wet. So synonymous were Grimsby and fish that the relationship was commemorated in the nickname of our local football team and subsequently in the emergence of Harry the Haddock. Of course times have changed, the trawler fleet is long departed, (although some vessels like Fastline Shellfish’s MV Sweetwater still sail from the port), and our official soubriquet is now Europe's Food Town in honour of the vast range of processing that is conducted in the area but it's still a town built on fish. The upgraded Fish Market facilities draw in fish from Iceland, Norway and many other places and the town is a centre for the production of a huge range of fish products, from salmon fillets to salt cod, smoked haddock to fresh crab. The seafood industry is worth 2.5 billion pounds a year to the local economy and 70% of Europe’s chilled fish is produced in this area. And if you were in any doubt about the continuing fame of our most famous product then you should have been at the recent Texas gig at the Auditorium when lead singer Sharleen Spiteri waxed lyrical about the fish and chips she'd had for her tea. That’s real fame for you.

Brexit, supply, sustainability? We asked Chris Sparkes of Jaines Seafood what he thinks are the main challenges facing the Grimsby’s fish processing industries.

GRIMSBY FISH

And what about the future? A proud heritage is a fine thing but it doesn't necessarily convert into high quality jobs. We asked Chris Sparkes of Jaines Seafood (pictured on the right in the photo above) about the big challenges facing the industry.

"Well it may sound predictable but first and foremost it's Brexit and the currency instability that it has caused. The majority of our fish is imported from Norway and Iceland and the fall in the value of the pound means a 20% increase in the price we pay and that's not something we can just pass on to customers. Brexit will also impact our ability to recruit skilled workers in Europe. But this is a resilient industry and we're adaptable. These challenges will cause us to assess the strengths and weaknesses of our businesses and make the changes necessary for success.

INDEPENDENCE

Keeping Independent

Experts agree that senior citizens living alone should be involved in their own care as much as possible because it fosters a sense of purpose, facilitating a sense of accomplishment and agency. And even in a residential setting it's important that clients feel that they are in control of at least some aspects of their lives. It's good for their health and self respect and dignity. At care providers such as at The Grove in Waltham (opposite) there’s always lots happening so that residents can make choices about what they want to do. INDUSTRIAL ESTATES

Around the

Estates They may not be the loveliest places in the world but when you need a specialist task performing or an expert trade then more often than not you'll end up on one of the many

industrial estates that surround the town. Whether it's the haulage knowledge of GL Commercials on Europa Way, coach hire from Millman's on Wilton Road or expert maintenance of your vehicle by Lincs VWA on Woodside Park in Tetney these are businesses that know their stuff. So next time you need something doing properly take a trip out of town and around the estates - you'll probably find exactly what you're looking for.

There’s lots happening at the market in the near future but we’re particularly keen on their Halloween Pumpkin Carving Competition which takes place on Saturday 28th October. It starts at 10am and there’s a £2 entry fee which goes to Cash for Kids and the winner, who gets a fantastic prize, will be decided by a Facebook Like off. It’s not just pumpkins either. From 11am they’ll be playing Trick Or Treat. Bob for an apple, pick out a treat card and win a fabulous prize and then at 2pm the GAP Theatre Company will be delivering a special spooky performance. Sounds a great way to get into the Halloween spirit.

Grimsby Sewing & Knitting We’ve pointed out before that Grimsby Sewing and Knitting is one of those TARDIS-like shops that seem to be bigger inside than out – well now it’s even more true because proprietors Paul and Linda Haynes have expanded their empire to include the shop next door – giving them four shop widths of space to fill with top quality haberdashery. The new shop is exclusively devoted to woolcrafts and stocks a fantastic range of yarns from top names like King Cole, Stylecraft, Woolcraft, Cygnet and Sirdar plus needles, hooks, patterns and everything you might need to get the most out of your craft. They’re always happy to give advice too, so if you’re new to the world of woolcraft just drop in one day for a chat and they’ll sort you out with all you need to get started on a project that’s affordable and achievable too!

LEARNING A HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU

KUMON CELEBRATE FIFTEEN YEARS IN HEALING AND HUNDREDS OF HAPPY STUDENTS

I

t’s fifteen years since Sarah Prior first set up the Kumon Study Centre in Healing Village Hall and in that time hundreds of happy students and parents have passed through the doors to get her help towards enhancing their educational achievement and maximising their potential. Sarah marked the anniversary with an awards ceremony and she’s in the image on the right with local author Steve Meek who presented the award and Ryan who received the trophy for English progress. Kumon originated in Japan and is now a wordwide educational phenomenon. The aim of the programme is to help students become advanced learners by boosting their self-confidence as they work out how to overcome challenges and problems by themselves.

OCTOBER INTRODUCTORY FREE TRIAL

If you think that Kumon might be just right for your child then why not bring them along for a 2 week trial during October to see how they get on (subject to availability) Kumon is an independent study programme, but students are never alone. Sarah provides the guidance and encouragement that students need to take their learning into their own hands, increasing their motivation to succeed and achieve. Sessions take place between 3.30 and 5.30pm every Monday and Thursday with students dropping in for about twenty minutes, once or twice a week. Why not give Sarah a call to see if Kumon can work for you and your child.

CLEETHORPES

It may be getting chilly but Cleethorpes is still buzzing. We seem to remember a time when everything pretty much shut down after the summer but nowadays there’s always plenty going on. Our favourite event of the Autumn is Glow In The Park which takes place at Meridian Park on Saturday 25th November. It’s a glorious mix of colour, music and neon clothing and it’s all in aid of St Andrew’s Hospice.

HOME MAINTENANCE take care of the bricks and mortar and they’ll take care of you!

U

nless you've got lots of good jewellery or a really impressive stamp collection your home is probably your most valuable asset and if you keep it in good condition it should keep you warm, dry and safe for years to come. With a bit of with care and regular maintenance you should be able to ensure that small faults don’t escalate into major problems and by catching things early the cost of repairs is smaller and spread over a longer period.

On the outside of your home you should start at roof level, check that chimney stacks don't look damaged, ridges are even guttering is sound and unblocked. Give the brickwork and window frames some attention while you're outside and take a look around the garden to see if there any jobs need doing. Autumn is a great time for tidying up. Back indoors get an expert in to check gas and electric and make sure timber and plumbing are satisfactory. Look out for signs of damp.

AF Scampton held its first air show on the weekend of September 9th & 10th and what a great event it was! More than 100 planes, including a unique mix of modern military jets, historic warbirds, civilian display acts and the RAF Falcons - the UK’s premier military parachute team - all joined the world famous Red Arrows (performing at their home base) for a spectacular show that thrilled the thousands who attended and celebrated not only the history of flight but the valour, skill and heritage of the Royal Air Force. There was also Scampton’s very own collection of historic RAF fire engines to be admired and from WW1 and WW2, the famous 617 ‘Dambusters’ Squadron. CRAFTY KEN COMES TO THE BEACHCOMBER IN AID OF THE PINK ROSE SUITE

Snooker fans gathered at The Beachcomber on Friday September 8th when the former World Professional Snooker Champion Ken Doherty came to town to play some frames, share some stories and raise money for the Pink Rose Suite. The event was the brainchild of local snooker professional Jamie Curtis-Barrett and aimed

to raise money in memory of Jamie’s wife Leanne who was a patient on the Pink Rose suite. She sadly lost her fight against breast cancer in March 2016. Jaime’s friend and fellow professional Allan Taylor came along too and the three stars treated the crowd, and a few lucky amateur cuemen, to an evening of laughter, memories and skills on the old green baize.

FIVE

essential checks

motoring

Falling temperatures and poor weather mean the number of breakdowns can more than double throughout the winter months. So before the worst of the winter takes hold here are our top tips for basic motor maintenance that will see you through to spring. 1. Get your car serviced If your car is due a service, get it done before the winter. If you don’t have a regular garage then we’d highly recommend the ones in this issue. They’re top class. 2. Check your battery The battery should be a top priority at this time of year. During the winter months it suffers from a double whammy of cold temperatures - reducing the output and the increased use of lights, heater and blower, which place it under additional strain.

essential they are in good condition. A minimum of 3mm depth during the winter, compared to the legal minimum of 1.6mm, gives much better grip.

3. Top up engine coolant with antifreeze Engine coolant should be a 50/50 mix of water and antifreeze but it tends to get diluted during the course of the year. Now’s the time to get the mix right.

5. Clean your lights and wipers Check that all lights, indicators and rear reflectors are clean and check the wiper blades to check for nicks and tears. Check for any chips in the windscreen, as these can grow in the cold weather.

4. Check your tyres As a car’s tyres are key to both steering and braking, it is

And of course carry a thermos, shovel and blanket and make sure your phone is charged. Have a safe winter!
