In The Know Your indispensable guide to what’s going on where you live Paloma Faith Announces August Show At Market Rasen Racecourse
I
t looks like it’s going to be a summer of great music in our area, with Plan B already announced to play Market Rasen Racecourse on July 1st and now things are getting even more exciting with the announcement that the amazing Paloma Faith will be playing a hit filled open air show at the racecourse venue on Saturday 18th August. With her acclaimed Number 1 album ‘The Architect’ riding high in the charts and a BRIT nomination for Best British Female, Paloma Faith will be bringing hits old and new to the course for a stunning headline performance. ‘The Architect’ builds on the the huge success of her 2014 album, ‘A Perfect Contradiction’, which spent 66 weeks in the Top 40. The new album is currently on course to become her fourth double platinum album in a row – which would make
her the first British woman in chart history to achieve this incredible feat! Equally at home both onstage and in the studio, this show will undoubtedly be one of the highlights of the summer season. Tickets are available via www. thejockeyclublive.co.uk.
Strictly favourite Giovanni Pernice ready to waltz into town
G
iovanni Pernice, who danced his way to the finals of Strictly Come Dancing 2017 with his partner Debbie McGee, is taking the show on the road in April as he sets out on his Born To Win tour. The show will be at Grimsby Auditorium on Monday 30th April and we’re going to have some prize tickets to give away so keep an eye on out Facebook page! Giovanni will be joined by seven professional dancers including Luba Mushtuk as his leading lady. Luba has most recently been seen dancing on the BBC hit show with Giovanni, to the vocal talents of
JUL
20 musical theatre star, Sheridan Smith. The show tells an epic tale of love and passion, with dances such as the Paso Doble and the Argentine Tango, plus you can expect other favourites like the Charleston, the Viennese Waltz and of course it has to have the Jive, seeing as Giovanni is the current Guinness World Record Holder for having the world’s fastest jive kicks and flicks! Tickets are now on sale directly through the auditorium or at www. giovannipernice.com and there are also a limited number of VIP tickets available at most venues.

Poet and performer Josie Moon has had a busy 2017 and she’s looking forward to lots more projects this year. We managed to slow her down long enough to give us some ideas about what’s in prospect. I know you had a busy year last year. Fill us in on what you’ve been up to. I had a great end to 2017 with the Fish Tales gigs and the added extra bonus of our performance at Herts Jazz Festival being broadcast on Radio 3 on Christmas Day. The La Luna Young Voices project concluded successfully with the publication of their anthology, In Case of An Emergency which is available to purchase from my website, and the Great Grimsby Community Choir had a very busy December and a spectacular finale concert with Adele Dixon and Barry Whitfield at St Augustine's. So the year really did end on a high. What's next for Josie Moon and La Luna?

I have just co-written a lovely book and song cycle with Pat McCarthy. A Woodland Story is touring schools in NE Lincs from the end of January and will be performed at the auditorium in March. The book is available from the website. In April La Luna is publishing a beautiful new book of poetry and original art work by Maria Garner and Vivienne May and there will be a spring launch for that work. I am working on a major new piece of creative writing and saying nothing about that until it's ready to launch. The choir is looking forward to an exciting year and already we have plans for brand new original material and concerts later in the year with some interesting guest artists. There are two Fish Tales dates booked for 2018 in Alford and Ipswich and Alan Barnes, Pat McCarthy and I are working on something new which will be announced later in the year. How can people find out about your projects? The best way to keep in touch with everything that’s going on is to subscribe to my blog josiemoon.co.uk and follow me on Facebook and Twitter. To join the choir simply turn up on a Monday evening at St Mark's Church, Laceby Road. It's an open and inclusive choir and everyone over the age of 14 is welcome. We’ll hope to see you there.

PUTTING PAIN ONTO THE PATIO WITH SOME CLASSIC AYCKBOURN Greg and Ginny live together but she is having an affair with her married boss, Philip. When Ginny goes away for the weekend to break off the affair Greg decides to follow but he mistakes Philip and his wife, Sheila, for Ginny’s parents. This being Alan Ayckbourn you won’t be surprised that hilarity ensues. Relatively Speaking, first performed in 1967, is the play that gave Alan Ayckbourn his first West End hit and it’s a delicately balanced comedy of manners and misidentification, not as dark as some of his later work but perceptive and sharp enough to show that even as a young writer Ayckbourn had a knack for finding humour in marital misery.

Greater Grimsby Heritage Action Zone promises a kickstart for local economic regeneration
P
lans for the regeneration of local economy received a boost last month when Minister for Arts, Heritage and Tourism, John Glen announced that Grimsby has been designated a Heritage Action Zone. The Zone will give historic dock buildings, former smokehouses, factories and shops a new lease of life, creating jobs and stimulating appreciation of Grimsby’s heritage. The Grimsby Heritage Action Zone is being led by NE Lincolnshire Council. Working with Associated British Ports it will unlock a transformation of the Kasbah, where
the designation of a new Conservation Area has recently recognised the importance of historic smokehouses and other buildings associated with the fishing industry. The programme also aims to reconnect the town centre with the port by promoting the use of historic buildings along Alexandra Dock, including Victoria Mills, where the Council recently spent more than £2 million on urgent repairs. Louise Brennan, Planning Director for Historic England in the East Midlands, said of the decision: “Few places in England have as distinctive a heritage as Grimsby, and few have so much to gain from it. Grimsby
IN THE KNOW holds a unique place in our history as a seafaring nation, and the evidence can still be seen in abundance in historic buildings like those in the Kasbah. These places are not only symbols of the past but opportunities for the future. With a little imagination and investment, Grimsby’s heritage is poised to release new economic vitality and pride in the town." Councillor Peter Wheatley, portfolio holder for regeneration agreed and welcomed the announcement, commenting: “This is welcome news and is a significant part of the wider Town Deal we have been working with central government and partners on. Grimsby is changing with the new industries we are seeing in the town and pulling all the strands of work together will help to truly transform the economic outlook for the town. Lots of pieces of the jigsaw are finally beginning to come together. That takes hard work and dedication – it’s not by any stretch of the imagination a quick process. Now we need to deliver the projects with our local communities and our partners to realise Grimsby’s full potential and make sure that the town’s character and heritage will truly benefit the area.” Simon Bird, Port Director Humber at ABP added: “This announcement is another huge step forward in breathing new life into the Kasbah which is already part of a thriving port. Regeneration of the Kasbah area has come to symbolise the special partnership approach that we have adopted with NE Lincolnshire Council, and we look forward to working with them and with Historic England to spearhead a programme of economic regeneration for the future.”

For the first time the women’s race will be starting at the same time and place which means there’ll be even more spectacle for the crowds to enjoy. Business
So Christmas has been and gone, you’ve tidied up, binned the rest of the turkey. Even the mother in law has finally packed her bags and gone home. The only problem left is that you’ve got a houseful of gifts that you didn’t ask for and don’t want and don’t know what to do with, You could just bin them but that seems wasteful. You could recycle them as birthday presents but there’s always the risk that you’ll send somebody their own present back. Or you could take them down to Cash Generator and pick up some folding money for them safe in the knowledge that they’ll be going to a good home.

english
language day The United Nations has six official languages of which English is one, the others being French, Spanish, Russian, Chinese and Arabic and each language has an official celebration day. English Language Day is observed 23rd April because it is traditionally believed to be both the birthday and date of death of William Shakespeare. The purpose of these events is to celebrate cultural diversity and it’s an opportunity to take a pride in our great history of literature; to shout the praises of our greatest poets, playwrights and novelists. English is one of the most powerful languages in the world, a lingua franca

that is the official language of more than 60 nations but it’s also widely thought to be one of the most difficult languages to learn, second only to Japanese. Unsurprising when it contains words like their, there, and they’re. Or when the plural of goose is geese, but the plural of moose is… moose. And don’t get me started on the number of ways you can pronounce ough!
IN THE KNOW World Book Day is a celebration of authors, illustrators, books and reading marked in over 100 countries all over the world. The main aim of World Book Day is to encourage children to explore the pleasures of books and reading by providing them with the opportunity to have a book of their own. This year will see the 17th World Book Day, and on March 1st children of all ages will come together to appreciate reading. There’ll be a book token for every school age child and special £1 books that they can buy with them and loads of fun and games on the theme of books and reading. NEW YEAR, NEW HOME CHIM CHIMMENY CHIM CHIM CHEREE MAY DAY IS CHIMNEY SWEEPS DAY
May Day is known all around the world as a red letter day for any number of reasons - not least as International Labour Day but in the Victorian era its main significance was as Chimney Sweeps Day. Conditions for the sweeps and their child helpers were
appalling and countless numbers died in accidents or from the many diseases that the coal dust and tar caused them and it was only through
the good work of campaigners such as Mrs Montague and Jonas Hanway that the practice of using child MAY sweeps was banned.

Could you run a Ron-a-thon? ALL SET FOR THE MAYOR’S CHALLENGE 2018
A
re you fit enough to face a 12 hour, non-stop exercise challenge in the name of charity? Local Mayor for North East Lincolnshire, Councillor Ron Shepherd, has this week launched his Mayor’s challenge – an annual project set up by the incumbent Mayor to raise money for his or her chosen charities. This year, Councillor Shepherd has chosen to host and take up the challenge of a 12 hour ‘Rona-thon’ of non-stop exercise to raise funds for his charities, Linkage and the Carers Support Service.
The challenge, which will run from 7am to 7pm on Friday 2 April 2018, is open to the public to spectate or join in. The Worshipful, the Mayor of North East Lincolnshire, Councillor Ron Shepherd, said: “I’m really looking forward to this Mayor’s challenge – I think it’ll be a tough one though. I hope that lots of people from all walks of life come along and get involved in any way they can – even if they can only do fifteen minutes or so on a treadmill. It’s all for two good local causes. All people have to do is gather sponsorship and commit to doing a length of time, and then turn up at
Grimsby Town Hall on the day and complete their challenge.” “I would like to thank Lincs Inspire for providing the machines - treadmills, rowing and cycling machines – for the challenge. If anyone wants to host their own Ron-a-thon on the day at a location that suits them, then they are more than welcome to do so, and if possible I will come along and visit and get involved.” To find out more about this year’s Mayor’s Challenge, contact Tracy Frisby or Paul Wisken on 01472 314101 or paul.wisken@ nelincs.gov.uk.
LOVE TO WALK? WHY NOT TRY A TREK FOR MARIE CURIE IN 2018?
A
t this time of year it’s traditional to overestimate our resources of grit and determination and to make promises that we can’t keep about our future virtue, but this year why not put the new into your New Year’s resolutions and inspire yourself by setting a different kind of goal for 2018 that will support Marie Curie and increase your fitness levels at the same time by signing up to take part in one of their amazing treks! Marie Curie treks are a fantastic way to see the places you never imagined you could! From the picturesque views of Great Wall of China to the glorious setting of the Peak District – there really is an experience for everyone. Marie Curie treks are designed to provide participants with an enormous sense of achievement, new friendships and the opportunity to raise serious sponsorship for your local Marie Curie services. With a little training a trek can be within everyone’s capabilities and it truly is the experience of a lifetime. Marie Curie Community Fundraiser Lauren Alexander is on the lookout for people interested in taking on a new
challenge for 2018, saying: “Not only will you feel the buzz the outdoors but, by taking part in a sponsored trek, you will also be enabling Marie Curie to continue caring for people living with a terminal illness, and their loved one through the local Marie Curie nursing service. In Lincolnshire, we have over 85 nurses and this is thanks to members of the public for helping us to fund them each year.” Your Marie Curie trek place includes training guides to help you get going, a fundraising pack, a Marie Curie T-shirt and also access to a private Facebook group just for your trek so you can chat with fellow trekkers beforehand, sharing tips and training stories along the way. If you are up for the challenge, please contact your local Community Fundraiser, Lauren on 07525 80531 or lauren.alexander@mariecurie.org.uk. She’ll be delighted to find the right trek for you and explain everything that you need to know. So stick to this year’s resolution, get fit and get the Marie Curie t-shirt for 2018!
