Strictly favourite Giovanni Pernice ready to waltz into town

iovanni Pernice, who danced his way to the finals of Strictly Come Dancing 2017 with his partner Debbie McGee, is taking the show on the road in April as he sets out on his Born To Win tour. Poet and performer Josie Moon has had a busy 2017 and she’s looking forward to lots more projects this year. We managed to slow her down long enough to give us some ideas about what’s in prospect. I know you had a busy year last year. Fill us in on what you’ve been up to. I had a great end to 2017 with the Fish Tales gigs and the added extra bonus of our performance at Herts Jazz Festival being broadcast on Radio 3 on Christmas Day. The La Luna Young Voices project concluded successfully with the publication of their anthology, In Case of An Emergency which is available to purchase from my website, and the Great Grimsby Community Choir had a very busy December and a spectacular finale concert with Adele Dixon and Barry Whitfield at St Augustine's. So the year really did end on a high. What's next for Josie Moon and La Luna?

I have just co-written a lovely book and song cycle with Pat McCarthy. A Woodland Story is touring schools in NE Lincs from the end of January and will be performed at the auditorium in March. The book is available from the website. In April La Luna is publishing a beautiful new book of poetry and original art work by Maria Garner and Vivienne May and there will be a spring launch for that work. I am working on a major new piece of creative writing and saying nothing about that until it's ready to launch. The choir is looking forward to an exciting year and already we have plans for brand new original material and concerts later in the year with some interesting guest artists. There are two Fish Tales dates booked for 2018 in Alford and Ipswich and Alan Barnes, Pat McCarthy and I are working on something new which will be announced later in the year. Greater Grimsby Heritage Action Zone promises a kickstart for local economic regeneration

lans for the regeneration of local economy received a boost last month when Minister for Arts, Heritage and Tourism, John Glen announced that Grimsby has been designated a Heritage Action Zone. The Zone will give historic dock buildings, former smokehouses, factories and shops a new lease of life, creating jobs and stimulating appreciation of Grimsby’s heritage. The Grimsby Heritage Action Zone is being led by NE Lincolnshire Council. Working with Associated British Ports it will unlock a transformation of the Kasbah, where

the designation of a new Conservation Area has recently recognised the importance of historic smokehouses and other buildings associated with the fishing industry. The programme also aims to reconnect the town centre with the port by promoting the use of historic buildings along Alexandra Dock, including Victoria Mills, where the Council recently spent more than £2 million on urgent repairs. Louise Brennan, Planning Director for Historic England in the East Midlands, said of the decision: “Few places in England have as distinctive a heritage as Grimsby, and few have so much to gain from it. Grimsby

IN THE KNOW holds a unique place in our history as a seafaring nation, and the evidence can still be seen in abundance in historic buildings like those in the Kasbah. These places are not only symbols of the past but opportunities for the future. With a little imagination and investment, Grimsby’s heritage is poised to release new economic vitality and pride in the town." Councillor Peter Wheatley, portfolio holder for regeneration agreed and welcomed the announcement, commenting: “This is welcome news and is a significant part of the wider Town Deal we have been working with central government and partners on. Grimsby is changing with the new industries we are seeing in the town and pulling all the strands of work together will help to truly transform the economic outlook for the town. Lots of pieces of the jigsaw are finally beginning to come together. That takes hard work and dedication – it’s not by any stretch of the imagination a quick process. Now we need to deliver the projects with our local communities and our partners to realise Grimsby’s full potential and make sure that the town’s character and heritage will truly benefit the area.” Simon Bird, Port Director Humber at ABP added: “This announcement is another huge step forward in breathing new life into the Kasbah which is already part of a thriving port. Regeneration of the Kasbah area has come to symbolise the special partnership approach that we have adopted with NE Lincolnshire Council, and we look forward to working with them and with Historic England to spearhead a programme of economic regeneration for the future.”

Tour de Yorkshire 2018 to start in Beverley It’s been one of the highlights of the northern sporting calendar for three years now and we’re delighted to discover that this year’s Tour de Yorkshire will be setting out from Beverley on May 3rd on a route that will cover 182km and visit the seaside at Hornsea before finishing in Doncaster. Could you run a Ron-a-thon? ALL SET FOR THE MAYOR’S CHALLENGE 2018

re you fit enough to face a 12 hour, non-stop exercise challenge in the name of charity? Local Mayor for North East Lincolnshire, Councillor Ron Shepherd, has this week launched his Mayor’s challenge – an annual project set up by the incumbent Mayor to raise money for his or her chosen charities. This year, Councillor Shepherd has chosen to host and take up the challenge of a 12 hour ‘Rona-thon’ of non-stop exercise to raise funds for his charities, Linkage and the Carers Support Service.

The challenge, which will run from 7am to 7pm on Friday 2 April 2018, is open to the public to spectate or join in. The Worshipful, the Mayor of North East Lincolnshire, Councillor Ron Shepherd, said: “I’m really looking forward to this Mayor’s challenge – I think it’ll be a tough one though. I hope that lots of people from all walks of life come along and get involved in any way they can – even if they can only do fifteen minutes or so on a treadmill. It’s all for two good local causes. All people have to do is gather sponsorship and commit to doing a length of time, and then turn up at

Grimsby Town Hall on the day and complete their challenge.” “I would like to thank Lincs Inspire for providing the machines - treadmills, rowing and cycling machines – for the challenge. challenge for 2018, saying: “Not only will you feel the buzz the outdoors but, by taking part in a sponsored trek, you will also be enabling Marie Curie to continue caring for people living with a terminal illness, and their loved one through the local Marie Curie nursing service. In Lincolnshire, we have over 85 nurses and this is thanks to members of the public for helping us to fund them each year.” Your Marie Curie trek place includes training guides to help you get going, a fundraising pack, a Marie Curie T-shirt and also access to a private Facebook group just for your trek so you can chat with fellow trekkers beforehand, sharing tips and training stories along the way.
