Time To Unite Art In The Market Against Dementia To Bring A Wide At The Humber Range of Art and Bridge Memory Performance To Walk Top Town
P
eople across the generations in our area are being called on to unite against dementia by signing up for the Humber Bridge Memory Walk which takes place on Sunday 30th September The aim is to turn the bridge into a ribbon of blue as walkers tackle a 6km route across the Humber and back. Many people walk because a family member or has dementia, to raise awareness and money for a great cause but no matter your reason for wanting to be part of a brilliant event, it’s a great opportunity to turn your thoughts into action and sign up at memorywalk.org.uk Margaret McHugh, Alzheimer’s Society services manager told us: “Dementia is now the UK’s biggest killer, with someone developing it every three minutes. Every pound raised through the Memory Walk will help us provide vital information and support, improve care, fund research and create lasting change for people affected by the condition. We’re calling on individuals and teams from across the area join us this autumn. Walk with us at Humber Bridge Memory Walk to help defeat dementia.”

here’s an exciting new two year programme of public art on its way to town, launching in August. Art In The Market will be based in Market Central, a newly created indoor market stall space, on Grimsby’s Top Town Market. This unique venue will become a focal point for an original high quality
arts and makers programme and with plans ranging from exhibitions to pop up participation installations, craft demonstrations and workshops to vintage fairs, from busking to music ensembles it looks like there should be something lined up to suit everyone. Our Big Picture are working with the NEL Music Hub, Franklin College and Grimsby Institute, to create a varied programme including Art in the Cart – using a large wooden cart for commissioned art installations, Makers Bays – display bays within entrances of the market and specialist fairs and markets. Grimsby’s own Terry Clarke will be artist in residence so keep your eye on the OurBigPicture website and social media for more details.

halloween at Twinkles
Let’s Carry On Screaming
Halloween brings together strands of folklore and magic from a wide range of cultures to create a festival which celebrates saints, martyrs and the memory of those who have passed away. In many countries it is the Dia Del Muerte - the Day of the Dead - and in Europe it takes it’s name from being the day before All Hallow’s (or All Saints Day). There are a wide range of traditions associated with the festival but mostly it’s a day for getting dressed up in your best and scariest costumes and strutting your stuff. So we’ll see you out and about and if we don’t recognise you just give us a tap on the shoulder and say hello! SINGLE USE COLOURED CONTACT

IN THE KNOW
WELCOME TO THE BIRTHDAY PARTY FROM HELL! Come and help us celebrate our
EST 1943
Recently widowed Joan Merrifield is preparing to turn seventy five. And what better way to celebrate her special day than with a visit from the whole family, reunited after many years of estrangement? Surely she could not have asked for a better birthday present? What could possibly be nicer than being surrounded by her nearest and dearest? Well, as it turns out, just about anything‌ The festivities get off to a disastrous start when Joan finds herself in bed with her sleazy ex-husband. Things only go downhill from there and, as the gin starts to flow and the social niceties subside, it soon becomes clear why this family have nothing to do with one another. With long buried secrets and resentments running chasm deep, who needs party games? Bold and brutal, SMOTHER is a savage, scathing black comedy in which blood really is thicker than water. AND LOTS MORE GREAT SHOWS ON THE WAY IN THE NEW YEAR! CHECK THE CAXTONS WEBSITE FOR UPDATES
The Caxtons were founded during the early days of the Second World War and over 75 years later they’re still going strong, offering eight varied productions a year in their own 180 seat theatre and running an extremely successful Youth Theatre group. They hold a regular once a month get together called Keep In Touch Thursdays (or KITT nights for short). New members are always welcome and KITT nights can be a great way to find out if Caxtons is for you. Check the website or social media for further details. To celebrate their anniversary they have commissioned an original play by local author Ben Parfrement Parkes, whose first play, Dead And Breakfast, enjoyed great success in 2016 and we asked him to give us some idea what to expect.

HOBBIES
Hobbies & Interests Most of us have hobbies, and whatever floats your boat, whether it’s knitting or fishing, cycling or singing they’re an important part of our lives, essential to our happiness and well being. So why are hobbies so important? Well first of all they bring us pleasure and enrich our lives and in a world that can sometimes seem to have lots of sharp edges that’s got to be a good thing. By introducing fun into our lives, especially for those of us for whom work and other responsibilities can take up most of our time, they help lighten our loads, relieve stress, make us more patient and allow us to acquire new skills. The upshot of all of that is that hobbies make us happier and more interesting people. For some a hobby may be a solitary pass time but the large number of clubs and associations that we see around town indicates that for many people hobbies are an important part of their social lives, bringing people together to share the things they enjoy.
Sing for pleasure and let the music out! Humber Belles meet on Thursdays at Wendover Hall from 7.15pm to 9.30pm and from November 1st we are holding a series of five open rehearsals to learn two new songs for Christmas. Interested? You just need enthusiasm and the ability to sing in tune, as learning materials will be provided. Visit our website, email humberbelles25@gmail.com or call 01472 695836 to arrange a visit to one of our rehearsals - it’s time to let all that music out for everyone to hear! Hope to see you soon!

La Luna Dates For Your Diary This Autumn
W
e all need more poetry in our lives so it’s good to know that there’s plenty going on over the next few weeks under the La Luna banner including a collaboration with Lincs Inspire which will deliver a year long programme of poetry, exhibitions, talks, drama and music entitled Words and Pictures. The programme will see the relaunch of Poetry Thursdays at Riverhead Coffee with poet and teacher Carolyn Doyley at the helm. Meetings will take place on the third Thursday of the month and will involve workshops, performances and reading sessions. At The Albert Room in Cleethorpes there will be poetry every first Thursday of the month with workshops and performances from local, regional and national poets and artists. To celebrate National Poetry Day on October 4th La Luna will be presenting Ralph Dartford's show, Recovery Songs, a powerful and unflinching look at recovery from addiction. Tickets cost £5 and are available from Cleethorpes Library. Ralph will lead a bespoke workshop in the afternoon and participants will have the opportunity to perform as support at the evening event. In November there is also a major concert planned, commemorating the end of the First World War - more details of that coming soon so watch this space!

Enhance, Modify, Improve Even experts in finance and economics struggle sometimes to say exactly what our homes will be worth in the next 5 or 10 years but what we do know for is that some changes made to your home will improve its relative value more than others. So how do we get the space we need and maximise added value?
Top of the list has to be a loft conversion. They’re not cheap of course, you’re looking at potential costs of up to £20,000 but they’re usually reckoned to add 12% to the value of your house. A conservatory or garage conversion will also add both space and value. It’s not just extra rooms that add

MAKE YOUR KITCHEN INTO A ROOM FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY
WITH SCHULLER AT KITCHEN DISCOUNT
O
nce upon a time kitchens were just kitchens. Places to cook in and do the laundry and that was about in recent years they have become so much more - they’re the beating heart of the modern home, a place to for sharing time and making memories. With the increasing trend towards open plan living lots of us nowadays like to watch TV or other media in the kitchen, play games, read a book or learn the guitar. Many kitchens accommodate a small home office space and the kitchen can become a hub of arts and crafts activity. All you need is a newspaper to spread on the table, lots of great ideas, paper, glue and paints and you’re away. The kitchen is no longer just a room for adults – it’s a space for the whole family. With so much going on it makes sense to spend as much time planning your perfect kitchen as you would your living room. And that’s where Kitchen Discount can help. Established in 1973 and situated in Wood Street (off Freeman Street, next turn down after Wellington). Kitchen Discount are stockists of
kitchens by Schuller, a German manufacturer who have established an enviable reputation for design excellence, and top quality construction combined with a terrific value. Kitchen Discount doesn’t look big from the outside but there’s a tardis effect in operation because the building (it’s the purple one) doesn’t look big from the outside but when you step through the door it just seems to keep on going - fifteen full kitchens on display over two floors and these are not just any kitchens. Bright colours, excellent lines and top quality fixtures and fittings make every Schuller kitchens into a special kitchen and you can be sure of top after sales service too. So if you’re thinking about upgrading your kitchen make sure you head down to Wood Street, off Freeman Street and see the fantastic range they have on offer. And don’t forget to take the whole family with you -after all it’s their room too!

PALOMA FAITH AT MARKET RASEN RACECOURSE The Jockey Club Live programme at Market Rasen racecourse has given us some of the local musical highlights of the last couple of years, with visits from the likes of Tom Jones, Jess Glynne and the Kaiser Chiefs and it was packed again on August 18th for Paloma Faith, who brought a show which featured her classic hits plus new material from her most recent album, The Architect. On a stage set up to resemble a heap of glowing crystals and dressed in a classic 1960s dress Paloma wowed a packed house and we’ll be waiting with bated breath to find out who might be on the bill for next year’s shows.

our chimney is the exhaust pipe for your home, getting rid of the toxic by products of combustion and it needs to be clear of blockages and obstructions. Soot build up, birds nests and debris from damaged brickwork can all stop your chimney from working properly and cause dangerous gases to leak back into your home. They also increase the risk of chimney fires and long term smoke damage to your furniture and to the fabric of your home. And did you know that even people with a flame effect gas fire in regular use should have their chimney swept once or twice a year? No nor did we but even with gas fires an unswept flue can sometimes create hazardous levels of carbon monoxide. So how often should a chimney be swept? Usually once a year for light use and twice a year for fireplaces in regular use. A professional sweep will be able to advise you more exactly because some fuels, particularly wood and coal, burn dirtier than others. Doesn’t it take ages and make a horrible mess? Probably much less of either than you think. Most professional sweeps work quickly and with minimal mess.
So how much will a sweep cost? That’s one of those how long is a piece of string questions but prices start from about £35 to £40 for an open fire. If you need to have the integrity of your chimney seal tested, or any remedial work done, then your sweep will quote you a price. So there you go. Chimney sweeping - more important than you realise, cheaper than you think and if you give one of our sweeps a ring you can be assured of first class service and minimal mess. So why not give your chimney a bit of TLC soon, because a healthy chimney makes for a healthy home!

AUTUMN’S ON THE WAY SO DON’T FORGET THESE VITAL CHECKS Antifreeze
Check coolant level regularly and, if required, top up with a mixture of the correct type of antifreeze. Your garage should check concentration to ensure adequate cold temperature protection.
Battery
The most common cause of winter breakdowns. A battery more than five years old may struggle in the cold - get it checked and replaced if necessary to avoid the inconvenience of an unplanned failure.
Fuel
Keep at least a quarter of a tank in case of unexpected delay.
Lights
Check and clean all lights regularly and carry spare bulbs.
Tyres
Should have at least 3mm of tread for winter motoring. Consider winter tyres for improved safety. Check pressures at least every fortnight.
Windscreen
Reduce dazzle from the low sun by keeping the screen clean inside and out. Now is a good time to renew worn wiper blades.
Screen Wash
Use a 50% mix of a good quality screen wash to reduce the chance of freezing in frosty weather.
Locks
Stop doors freezing shut with a thin coat of polish or Vaseline on rubber door seals.
and don’t forget to carry a shovel!
Look after your battery this winter and it’ll look after you in return!
T
here’s a change in the weather predicted, with a cold snap and plenty of rain on the way and that can be tough on auto electrics. When your car won’t start it’s usually an issue with your battery. Cold and damp weather plays havoc with batteries because electrical systems have to work a lot harder and starter motors require all the current they can get to turn over the engine on colder mornings. Older, weaker batteries will often already have reduced performance and cold temperatures will reduce this further, to the point where the battery will go flat very quickly. To avoid trouble remember to switch off lights, wipers and heater before stopping your engine at the end of your journey. This prevents any unnecessary drain on the battery the next time you start up but still check again that everything is switched off before turning that key. Avoid using heaters, heated screens and heated seats for longer than you have to as they all put high demands on the vehicle’s battery. Check that no interior lights, including boot lights are left on and no accessories such as phone chargers have been left connected. Some SatNavs, DVD players and iPods can also drain the battery if left
connected. Park your vehicle in a garage whenever possible and get your battery tested, particularly if it is over three years old. And make sure you have some jump leads in the boot, just in case the worst happens. Maybe some bus fare too just to be on the safe side.
