Christmas is coming and the geese are getting fat and we’ve got plenty for you to look forward to in this issue including a visit to the Central Hall from the mighty Osmonds, their first trip to the town since they sold up the aerosol business and went into singing. There’s news of the Christmas lantern parade in Immingham too and about three exciting new projects from Grimsby Jazz and La Luna, including a major war requiem composed by Josie Moon and Pat McCarthy. Sounds like a busy few weeks in prospect. Have a good Crimbo and we’ll see you soon!

Illuminate Immingham to celebrate the Voyage of the Mayflower
A
mong our favourite events of last year were the two Illuminate parades so it’s good to hear that Immingham will once again mark the town’s connection to the story of the Pilgrims who sailed to America nearly 400 years ago by holding a parade which will start at 6.30pm on Friday 30th November at the Civic Centre.
The parade will travel down Washdyke Lane and into Pilgrim Park and the event will end with a dedication service in St Andrew’s Church. It is hoped to light up the Pilgrim Monument for the first time. Local school children and community groups will be involved in creating some beautifully crafted lanterns for this year's commemorative lantern parade. As part of the national Mayflower
400 partnership, Illuminate events will be happening across the country in addition to those being held in the Pilgrim roots locations of Boston, Scrooby, Retford, Bawtry and Gainsborough. The origin of the event and the light symbolism at the heart of Illuminate comes from a quote by William Bradford, one of the Mayflower Pilgrims who later became Governor of Plymouth Plantation: “…just as one small candle may light a thousand, so the light here kindled hath shone unto many”. Organised by North East Lincolnshire Council and Our Big Picture and supported by Immingham Town Council, St Andrew’s Church and Immingham Museum, the event continues the countdown to the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower voyage. A key part of the Mayflower story, Pilgrim families fled England from Immingham Creek in 1608 in search of religious freedom, bound initially for Holland. Twelve years later they decided to seek a life in the New World of America and set sail on the Mayflower in 1620. As this is an outdoor event, spectators and participants are advised to take note of the weather on the day and dress accordingly. For more information on Mayflower400 and Immingham's connection to the Pilgrims please visit www.mayflower400uk.org and www.pilgrimroots.org.

A Rockin’ Christmas With The Osmonds At The Central Hall
F
or those of us who were teenagers in the 1970s the Osmonds are synonymous with great pop music. Back then the multi-talented family group, augmented by younger siblings Donnie, Marie and Jimmy, were never absent from our TV and radio for long and as well as a long list of hits they’re remembered for their TV Christmas Specials and animated adventures. So it’s great news that this year Merrill & Jay Osmond will be coming to Grimsby Central Hall for a Rockin’ Christmas show that will get you up out of your seats and dancing like it’s 1974. The Osmonds first big hit was One Bad Apple, recorded on MGM Records, which went straight to number 1, staying there for six weeks. From then on the hits just kept coming and The Osmonds have never stopped recording and continue to experience great success worldwide. Their Christmas show promises to be something to remember so why not join Jay and Merrill at the Central Hall, Grimsby on Friday 23rd November.

COSTUME SORTED YET?
Christmas and New Year are great times for traditions. Chestnuts roasting on an open fire. Grandad falling asleep by the fire after dinner. First footing with a big old lump of coal. And of course fancy dress. Not so long ago it would have been Santas as far as the eye could see, with just a few Rudolphs and a snowman or two thrown in for good measure but nowadays the rule book has been thrown out and you can wear pretty much what you please. So don’t waste any time! Get yourself down to Twinkles and sort out your perfect costume and let’s get the party started!

giving the gift of hope
Age Care Development is a local charity which has built strong links with the Kyenjojo District of western Uganda, and especially with the community of Mukunyu. The village provides shelter and care for those who are too old, (or too young), to work in the local tea plantations. Life in Mukunyu can be hard. Finding food, shelter and clothing is a constant struggle. The diet of the locals is mostly posho which is a maize flour. Bread, meat or green vegetables are luxuries and the nearest clean water supply is in a valley two miles away. Even basic medicines like paracetemol are beyond the reach of most people and an education is all but impossible for children who do not have the money to pay school fees.
Garden Aid: Caring For Two Communities

rom time to time we like to bring our readers an update on one of our favourite local charities Age Care Development - which does so much to assist the disadvantaged in Western Uganda. Off To Space With Grimsby Jazz Projects! Grimsby Jazz Projects is going on a big adventure over the coming year, including a trip to space in a rocket and a voyage to the bottom of the sea in a submarine. Thanks to funding from Arts Council England they and La Luna are producing brand new projects in partnership with the NEL Music Hub bringing stories, singing and a sprinkle of magic to primary schools in our area. Even as we write, a rocket is under construction to take Cosmo and Carrie (aged 8 ) up to space to discover what is out there amongst the stars and they’ll be visiting primary schools in NE Lincs with their rocket and Carrie’s cat, who is also a keen explorer. With new songs, stories, workshops and resources – not to mention a big Singing Festival at the Auditorium – the project is ready to take off. And space is just the beginning. We’ll be announcing more details as we go along. So watch this space.

Exciting news of a major new music and poetry project
LA LUNA PRESENTS
A REQUIEM
T
hey like to keep busy down at La Luna so it’s no surprise that, following the outstanding success of their Fish Tales tour, CD and publication, they’ve announced a major new project for 2019, with Arts Council funding and in collaboration with Grimsby Jazz Projects. Bringing together the creative imagination of poet Josie Moon (pictured top left) and the dynamic composition talents of Alan Barnes
and Pat McCarthy (below left), along with a stellar line-up of international artists including Dave Green, Gilad Atzmon, Mark Nightingale, Sebastiaan De Krom, Dean Masser and Neil Yates, A Requiem is a bold and challenging work that examines the impact of conflict on individuals across a century, beginning in the trenches and ending in a robust call for peace in our time. The work honours those who have fought, died and made huge
personal sacrifices while also asking important questions about the nature of warfare. Using the traditional format of the Latin Mass, the work is a secular prayer for the whole of humanity. Daring and audacious in style and structure, A Requiem is a moving but ultimately uplifting and soulful work which invites the audience to both remember the history of conflict and resolve to do better in the future.
and a new project for schools too!
a soldier through time
Thanks to Arts Council funding, A Requiem also has a sister project for primary schools in NE Lincolnshire. A Soldier Through Time is a new story with songs for Key Stage 2 children and will tour in the summer of 2019 culminating in a performance at Grimsby Auditorium featuring
all the schools involved in the 2019 Singing Festival. Written by Josie Moon, Pat McCarthy and the La Luna creative team, A Soldier Through Time will explore the impact of war on ordinary men and women across the centuries and it sounds like an important and valuable event,
TOP BLUES BAND BRING AN INSPIRATIONAL MESSAGE TO SIGNHILLS ACADEMY Fans of blues and soul were treated to a fantastic evening of music at Signhills Academy on September 25th when Xander And The Peace Pirates played a very special gig in the school’s auditorium. Having spent five years as house band at Liverpool’s Cavern Club
Xander and the Peace Pirates have established a reputation as one of the best British bands around and their combination of rock, blues and soul has seen them share stages with the likes of Joe Bonamassa, Buddy Guy, Bon Jovi, Eric Bibb, Robben Ford, and Manfred Mann, establishing
themselves as one of the most exciting bands on the circuit. Lead singer and guitarist Keith Xander was born without a right arm below the elbow and plays guitar using a prosthesis and hook with a pick attached at the end but he hasn’t let that stop him from becoming a virtuoso musician. The band spent the day at the school working with pupils and explaining to them how important it is to not be held back by disabilities before performing in the evening to an appreciative audience.

THE DOG WALKER DIARIES: LEGENDS OF LACEBY
If you love a good scare and you’ve got an interest in local history then a new book by local author Emma Maskell will be right up your street, telling a 500 year old ghost story set in the village of Laceby. The Dog Walker Diaries is a piece of speculative fiction with one paw in the past and one in the present, that takes some of Laceby's myths, legends and historical events and blends them with real life to create a stunning ghost story. The Dog Walker Diaries is also available on Amazon as a physical and ebook edition.

HALLOWEEN DOG WALKERS RAISE FUNDS FOR HARBOUR PLACE
P
eoples Park echoed with a mixture of screams and woofs on Sunday as the Bark In The Park Halloween fancy dress dog walk made its way through the rain to raise money for Harbour Place. The event was the brainchild of seven year old Evie Rose, assisted by her mum Lynsey (both pictured on the right). Evie is a busy person in the community. You may have seen her on TV recently when the Keep Grimsby Tidy posters which she designed with her friends Molly and Kara were featured on local news programmes. The weather wasn’t kind but nobody let that dampen their spirits and more than £350 was raised which is a fantastic result so congratulations to Evie and we look forward to seeing what you’re up to next! We’re sure it will be another great success!
