PEOPLES We’ve been hearing for years that the big superstores, (with a bit of help from the internet), have been killing off the traditional high street retailers, but this year there have been hints that perhaps the out of town bubble is about to burst. It seems that many people have grown bored with doing a huge once a week out of town shopping run and prefer to shop local and daily or every other day.

#propersh In recent weeks the major stores have announced that they’re making huge losses on their delicatessen and fresh food counters and they’re planning to start a programme of closures. Many retail analysts are now predicting a resurgence of the kind of niche retailers that made the high street a great place to shop. So in our next issue we’re planning a celebration of proper shops and we’re looking for butchers, bakers, candlestick makers, fishmongers (they don’t just sell fish, they mong it), greengrocers, toy shops and hardware stores, plus lots of others, to come on board and join us in a feature celebrating the best of specialist shops.

Your indispensable guide to what’s going on where you live Over the past few years we’ve seen some fantastic big name performers at Market Rasen Racecourse including the Kaiser Chiefs, Tom Jones and Jess Glynne - and 2019 is shaping up to be even bigger and better than the rest because, following on from the announcement of Craig David, who’s scheduled for Saturday 17th August, The Jockey Club Live and Market Rasen Racecourse have announced a visit from the legendary Madness on Friday 7th June. Combining ska, reggae, Motown, rock’n’roll and classic pop, and with charismatic frontman Suggs on vocals Madness have become one of the best loved British bands and their sense of humour and ability to find poetry in everyday reality, has led them to hits including Baggy Trousers, It Must Be Love, Our House and the

1982 #1 House of Fun. They have also delivered historic performances at the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee concert and at the 2012 Olympic Games closing ceremony, confirming them as one of the nation’s most beloved and successful bands. CELEBRATING VIKING WOMEN AT THE YORVIK VIKING FESTIVAL Europe’s largest Viking Festival returns to York from Wednesday 20th27th February, telling the stories of Viking women through the voices of seers, queens and shield maidens – women whose influence was as great as any mighty warrior. There’ll be Best Beard and Strongest Viking Competitions on Saturday 23rd February and on the same day it’s the parade of hundreds of warriors from York Minster to Coppergate. CANNIBALISM ON THE WARDS: AN EVENING OF ABSURDITY AT THE CAXTONS The Woman in the Safari Outfit, the Woman in Armour (aka Joan Of Arc) and the Woman with the Gavel, have called a meeting. The business at hand is how to attack the men’s ward before they attack the women and eat them. A ruse is needed so they decide to kill another of their number, an Aviatrix named Amelia Earhart. This is a classic piece of theatre of the absurd by one of the originators of the genre and it promises to be a fascinating evening, the like of which you’ve never seen before. Chamber Music is in the Studio Bar from Thursday 4th April to Saturday 6th April and all tickets are £5.

THE GAME’S AFOOT AT THE CAXTON THEATRE FOR HOLMES AND THE RIPPER One of our highlights of 2018 was the Caxton’s production of Murder Weapon, a stylish thriller from the pen of Avengers screenwriter Brian Clemens, so it’s good to see that they’ve found room in this year’s schedule for another Clemens effort. Based on the book Jack the Ripper, the Final Solution by Stephen Knight, Holmes & The Ripper has the world’s greatest consulting detective and his stalwart

companion Dr Watson becoming embroiled in the famous series of grisly murders in fog wreathed Whitechapel in 1888. It’s a fast moving and thrilling show, based on one of the most popular theories about the identity of the Ripper, and it’s guaranteed to have you on the edge of your seats.

KEEP IN TOUCH THURSDAYS or KITT nights for short are informal social nights, held most months, in the Studio Bar. All are welcome - members old and new, friends, family and those thinking of joining. It’s a good chance to meet, catch up and chat. The next KITT night is scheduled for 21st March. Why not pay a visit and see if the Caxtons is for you.

T

here was an excited buzz at the Central Hall on Friday 15th February when the Roy Kemp Hall was the venue for the first performance of A Requiem, a new collaboration between Alan Barnes, Pat McCarthy and poet Josie Moon Subtitled ‘A suite of music and poetry to commemorate a century of war and to call for peace in our time’, it’s powerful stuff, with Josie Moon’s storytelling more confident and emotional than ever. She’s not afraid of taking on a big theme and telling it her way and she deals with the causes, nature and history of the century or so since the Great War, via the Second World War and up the present day with the proxy wars of Southeast Asia and the Middle East, and coming right up to date with the carnage of Aleppo, Baghdad and Basra. The battle between war and peace, light and dark, is played out over changing landscapes and in shifting light, but there are always those who seek to gain advantage from the hostilities, appearing in the text as crow men, carrion eaters who derive their wealth and sustenance from carnage. The Alan Barnes Octet were on excellent form as ever and with a line up including some of the best of contemporary British scene, including Mark Nightingale and Neil Yateson on horns, Gilad Atzmon and Robert Fowler on reeds, Pat McCarthy on guitar, Dave Green on bass and

Seb DeKrom on percussion and of course Alan Barnes himself there was some virtuoso playing and excellent composition on display. What was particularly nice to hear, for those of us who can’t help approaching the whole event like an essay and who sit there trying to follow the argument, was that there was a much stronger connection made between the music and the words than was the case with their previous collaboration, A Fish Tale, making both words and music easier to follow and much more compelling. Alan Barnes and Pat McCarthy have created a set of pieces of chamber jazz, infused with elements of cool jazz and bebop, with a breadth of imagination and colour to match the range of the poetry. The overall effect is not just sadness but also a righteous and bright burning anger. A recording of the work will soon be forthcoming and there’s an extensive tour planned for later in the year. The Alan Barnes Octet will return to this area for another performance of A Requiem on July 8th at the auditorium as part of a special summer concert with MAPAS.

his year Sheffield’s biggest party, the Tramlines Festival will be at Hillsborough Park again, this time from Friday 19th to Sunday 21st July and after a fantastic 10th edition in 2018, with Stereophonics, Noel Gallagher and Craig David topping the bill on the main stage this year promises to match that standard or even go better. At Tramlines 2019, crowds will be in indie, rock and disco heaven when the festival welcomes three heavy hitting headliners: Two Door Cinema Club, Courteeners, and Nile Rodgers & Chic. Other highlight performances will come from Wales’ finest, the Manic Street Preachers and Rag’n’Bone Man who recently topped the charts with Giant with Calvin Harris. A WORLD OF FANTASY AND ADVENTURE COMES TO THE CENTRAL HALL

G

rimsby’s Central Hall echoed to the clatter of lightsabers, the squawking of macaws and the occasional heartfelt expelliarmus on Sunday 3rd February when local event organisers Secret Keepers staged Febcon 1, their first comic book and sci-fi convention. There were some fantastic costumes on display, signings by actors from the telly and the silver screen and lots of memorabilia and collectors items to be bought. Our favourite was the magnificent Lego townscape belonging to ten year old Kendra Theaker-Gregerson who has created a magical world of bricks to raise money for the Sheffield Children’s Hospital which she attends for treatment. It certainly makes for a spectacularly colourful display with lots of hidden detail to be discovered. Secret Keepers have lots more events on the way and you can find them on Facebook, so take a look and see what’s on the way!

e’re back in the late 1980s and down in LA they’re knee deep in the hoopla and getting deeper all the time. A wicked father and son team of property developers have persuaded the mayor that what the city needs is to rip down the strip, including the legendary Bourbon Room (based on the real life Whisky A GoGo) and the bulldozers are ready to move in. Protestors are chaining themselves together on the streets and things are looking bad for the city built on sex (some of it with llamas) and drugs and rock and roll. And booze of course.
