Christmas is a time for giving so we thought we’d introduce you to our favourite local charity

Second Chance Cat Rescue, Keelby

We all know by now that a pet is for life not just for Christmas but in the present harsh economic climate the Second Chance Cat Rescue Centre at Keelby still expect that the new year will see a rise in the number of animals brought to them for care. The Centre, which is staffed entirely by a dedicated band of volunteers has been operating has had a good year, successfully rehoming many of their long term residents but costs are high, with food and vets’ bills at the top of the list of expenses. All their funds come from donations and fund raising and their team are always busy - whether it’s running a name card, establishing donation boxes at local businesses or operating stalls at a car boot sale or charity event. Donations of good, clean items for sale are always welcomed, particularly craft and gift items. DVDs and good quality children’s clothes are also popular. Just get in touch with them by phone or via the email address on the right. They are also very happy to receive

gifts of food, bedding or toys. The pictures on this page show just a few of the cats and kittens who are presently looking for a home. On the left and looking impossibly cute is one of three as yet unnamed kittens just three and a half months old. Mother Nina is also looking for a home. On the right, from the top, Cassie (a three year old spayed female), Ruby (about 12 years old, very affectionate, somewhat deaf) and Charlie (a very handsome male). If you think you could give a good home and a second chance to one of them then give the Centre a ring and make their Christmas!

Your indispensable guide to what’s going on where you live A Fruitful Autumn As Local Authors Publish Their Work It’s been a busy couple of months on the local writing scene. In addition to the success of the inaugural Filter Festival and the launch of Wall To Wall (the Driftnet Poets collaboration with Abbey Walk Galleries) three local poets have new collections coming out this Autumn - all well worth a look. Maria Garner of the Driftnet Poets has entitled her first collection Moonlight Dancers and among its many themes are dance, art and nature. It’s available via Moonfruit Publishing with all profits going to WaterAid. Lincolnshire based Canadian poet Paul Sutherland’s new volume is Journeying. Fellow writer Karen Maitland observes that ‘The poems are a beautiful evocation of landscape and longing.’ Available for £8.00 from www.

valleypress.com Another Lincolnshire poet, this time with Irish origins, David Cooke has published his new volume Work Horses. These poems evoke a sense of David’s upbringing in an Irish family in Berkshire and then diverge to explore his experience of Russian and Islamic culture. The book is available for £8.99 from www. wardwoodpublishing.co.uk Meanwhile in the world of children’s fiction Sime Naylor and Tim Michael have produced Krinkle Leaf Kris, a seasonal story featuring the mischievous and greedy squirrel Red and his friend (and conscience) Argil. The story is suitable for children of age 3 and above and can be purchased from Waterstones for £4.99.

Dorothy Dean Memorial Concert At The Central Hall Local music lovers will get the chance to enjoy an excellent concert while paying their respects to one of the town’s most charismatic and well loved figures on January 17th when the Central Hall hosts the Dorothy Dean Memorial Concert. Remembered by many as head of Wintringham School from 1953 until 1974 Dorothy Dean was also a leading light in the local music world and in 1959, together with Ronald Gill, founded the

The Society emphasised the encouragement and support of young musicians including among many others international concert pianist Richard Markham who became a good friend and will be performing at the concert. Dorothy brought many well known artists, including Dame Janet Baker, The Amadeus Trio, Peter Donohoe and Tasmin Little. Also featured will be the Coull Quartet and the programme will include works by Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Brahms and Schumann

Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs Come To Town The Cent-A-Stage Theatre Company will bring a touch of Christmas pantomime magic to the Central Hall on December 22nd with their production of the ever popular Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs.

In The Know This is another fantastic production from the critically acclaimed Cent A Stage Theatre Company and features their older members. They blend the traditional story line with a mixture of hilarious subplots and characters including larger than life “dwarfs”, sidesplitting odd job men, an evil queen, a debonair hero, a simply divine Snow White. Add them all together and this is the perfect show for Christmas for all the family - Oh yes it is! Oh yes it is!

Getting Ready To Time Warp At The Auditorium The Rocky Horror Show arrives at the Auditorium in March in an all new production and a cast that includes West End star Oliver Thornton, who has appeared in Phantom Of the Opera, Chicago and Starlight Express as Frank ‘n’ Furter, former Emmerdale actress Roxanne Pallett as Janet and

Philip Franks of Darling Buds of May fame as the narrator. Featuring all the classics such as “Science Fiction/ Double Feature”, “Dammit Janet” and of course, the timeless floor-filler, “The Time-Warp” The Rocky Horror Show tells the story of Brad and his fiancée Janet, two squeaky clean college kids who meet Dr Frank’n’Furter by chance when their car breaks down outside his house whilst on their way to visit their former college professor. It is an adventure they’ll never forget, with fun, frolics, frocks, and frivolity, bursting with timeless songs and outrageous outfits. The Rocky Horror Show is a guaranteed party, which famously combines science fiction, horror, comedy and music and encourages plenty of audience participation meaning, of course, getting dressed in your most outrageous fancy dress and being ready to dance - it’s certain to be a great night so let’s remember everybody - It’s just a jump to the left .......

The Perfect Gift 2 Have you managed to find it yet ?

It’s the same every Christmas. You fight your way through the crush in the shops, scan the catalogues and scour the internet - all to find the perfect gift for that special someone. And after all those hours of hard work and all that suffering what happens? You run out of inspiration and ideas and you end up buying perfume again. Or slippers. Or socks. But some people are really good at finding presents – they put the rest of us to shame – so here’s a little countdown of the five best Christmas gifts of all time. At five – what about a wrecked Porsche? Robert Redford used to get so fed up with Paul Newman talking cars all the time that he sent him a car wreck as a gift. Newman got it crushed and gift

5

4

wrapped and sent it right back. At four – a Cadillac (unwrecked). Caddies were Elvis Presley’s favourite way of saying Happy Christmas – he lost count of how many he gave away in his lifetime but in 1975 he gave away ten with a total value of $140,000. And that was in the days when $140,000 was a lot of money. At three – a masterpiece. Stuck for a gift idea for the Spanish king artist Velasquez dashed off a quick painting. Las Meninas is now regarded as one of the most important paintings of all time.

3

At two – a statue. The Statue of Liberty was a Christmas gift from the People of France to the people of America. It took five years to build and a further two years to wrap in shiny paper and tie an enormous bow onto. And top of the gift givers? Well we think that award ought to go Robert Cunningham, a New York policeman. In December 1984 he gave a half share in a lottery ticket to waitress Phyllis Penzo as a tip. When the ticket came up he was as good as his word and they shared six million dollars. Their story became the film It Could Happen To You. So there’s a few ideas- we hope that helps. Of course if you can’t find any of the things on our list there’s always socks. You can’t go wrong with socks.

Toys That Teach

Toys That Teach

It’s a dilemma faced by parents every year. Christmas is on the horizon and you’ve been presented with wish lists a mile long but while the things the kids have asked for look like fun, deep down you really hanker after buying them something that they’ll learn from. The problem is that you know that as soon as the box marked educational toy comes out of the wrapping paper it’s going to

be put to one side and labelled boring. So what can you buy that they’ll lover and learn from too? Maybe the best place to start is with old favourites - the toys that you grew up with are still great toys and they must teach something - after all you didn’t turn out so badly, did you? Take jigsaws for example. The great thing about jigsaws is that they can be bought to appeal to the specific child whether it is a dance loving girl or an animal

loving boy - and they have lots of educational benefits including the development of problem solving skills, spatial awareness and hand eye coordination and also fine motor skill training. When done in co-operation with a friend or parent they teach social skills and of course there is a wealth of opportunity to train language skills by discussing the subject matter of the puzzle. The value of art and craft materials can’t be overstated either - these are presents that children can lose themselves in for hours learning essential, creative skills along the way. For older children you might want to consider a science kit or chemistry set - these favourites of our youth are still available in many good shops. A good science kit can make children curious about the world and bring science to life adding to and supporting what they learn in their lessons at school. Learning through experience is

one of the best ways to acquire new skills and science kits teach children about the importance of method, the need for care when weighing and mixing materials and the proper use of scientific equipment. And lastly so we’re bang up to date - how about this year’s number one educational toy - the raspberry pi? The Pi is a creditcard sized computer that plugs into your TV and a keyboard. It’s a capable little PC which can be used for many of the things that your desktop PC does, like spreadsheets, wordprocessing and games. It also plays high-definition video. Most importantly it lets kids learn to programme just like we used to back in the days of the Spectrum and the ZX81. Remember how much fun it used to be trying to programme Space Invaders with only 1K of memory? This has got to be the number one educational gift this Xmas - and they’re only £25 each! Sorted.

A Joyous Feast

A Joyous Feast Christmas dinner - it’s a cracker!

So what’s your favourite part of Christmas day? Opening the presents? Singing carols? Shaving off granddad’s eyebrows while he’s having a nap after the Queen’s speech? (Seriously we don’t recommend the last one – we tried it once and it’s we’ve never been allowed to forget it). Well here at the People’s Publication so we’re happy to say that our favourite part of the day is Christmas dinner. A big golden brown turkey, roast potatoes and parsnips, plenty of brussels, pudding and mince pies to round it all off – what could be better? But the best part of all, the bit that we really love, that’s the Christmas cracker. Surely the strangest of British Christmas traditions. How on earth did we ever decide to decorate our tables with exploding cardboard tubes full of awful jokes, terrible prizes and paper hats? Step forward the guilty man -

confectioner Thomas J Smith of Clerkenwell, London who took his children on holiday to Paris for Christmas of 1847. In England at the time it was the custom for sweets to be sold loose from trays but they found that in Paris the most popular treats were sugared almonds sold wrapped in paper twists. Smith took the idea back to England and they quickly caught on especially at Christmas although at this time they were known not as crackers but as bonbons after the French word for sweets. To keep one step ahead of the competition and to try and generate all year round sales Smith kept improving his new invention. He added an outer layer of card, a toy and motto or joke and most importantly the snapper, which is made from cardboard impregnated with fulminate of silver. The first crackers to have the strip were

known as Cossacks. Although we think of them as a Christmas item Smith was a smart businessman and produced crackers for all manner of holidays and events including the Paris Exhibition of 1900, a war heroes edition in 1918 and a set to celebrate Prince Edward’s world tour in 1926. Tom Smith’s are still making fine Christmas crackers which are available through their website. Nowadays nearly 100 million crackers are sold annually in the United Kingdom and if you’re looking for something a little more up market then the Harrod’s Crown jewels crackers containing gifts such as Italian silk ties, leather wallets and bespoke headgear are available for only £1,299 for six. Oh, and the largest cracker ever was 207 feet long and built at Ley Hill School, Buckinghamshire. Merry Christmas and pass the egg nog.

Music

Who put the bomp in the bomp bah bomp bah bomp? We spend the evening with the amazing .....

Showaddywaddy If you’re a pop fan and you’re in the mood for a spot of high energy seventies revival rock and roll then there’s nobody better than Showaddywaddy to make things go with a bang and when the band came to the Central Hall in October it was a party night and a celebration of the band’s career all rolled into one! Recent personnel changes do not seem to have dampened the band’s spirits at all - the two remaining original members of the line up, bassist Rod Deas and drummer Romeo Challenger continue to drive the music along, with Challenger’s drumming being a highlight, while up front Andy Pelos has taken over lead vocal duties from Dave Bartram and seems to have dropped into the groove immediately. His infectious enthusiasm and the excellence of the band made for night with a large section of the audience dancing, singing and even joining the band on stage.

Music

With a back catalogue as long as theirs Showaddywaddy are never going to be short of material. The band had 22 Top 40 hits between 1973 (when they came second in the inaugural New faces final) and 1982 and the night’s set list included hit after hit all delivered with tremendous energy and panache. The band switched effortlessly from rock and roll to doo wop to a cappella harmonisation with new lead vocalist Andy Pelos proving from the outset that he is more than capable of stepping into the blue suede shoes of founder member Dave Bartram who recently retired. The audience at the Central Hall certainly loved every moment there was plenty of serious jiving going on at the front of house and many of those present were fans of long standing some of whom had come from as far afield as Wales and The Potteries to see their heroes.

Highlights of a packed evening included Heartbeat, Remember When, Angel Eyes and Rama Lama Ding Dong and of course they brought the house down at the end with Under The Moon Of Love and Hey Rock and Roll. A great night - we hope to see them back in the near future.

Health & Beauty

This January 1st why not make yourself a promise that you can keep without breaking the bank and then get ready for .....

A New Year’s

Revolution!

1

Get a proper night’s rest - beauty remedies go they don’t come cheaper or more effective. ‘Sleep which knits up the ravelled sleeve of time’ - Shakespeare was bang on the money there. According

to doctors (here comes the science bit) we need about six or seven hours sleep a day but it has to match in with our circadian rhythms otherwise it doesn’t work.

3

Dispose of old cosmetics! A surprising amount of what goes into our favourite cosmetics is organic in origin and therefore liable to go off! There is no legal requirement to put best before dates on make up but most experts agree that mascara is particularly prone to going bad and can cause serious eye infections. Watch for colour change, cracking or flaking and give suspicious products the old heave ho!

Health & Beauty

Start taking sun protection seriously - and that means not just on holiday. Of course sun is essential for Vitamin D but too much causes premature skin ageing and eye damage and may lead not only to melanoma but also to damage to our immune system. Sun lotions with high SPF are essential as are good sunglasses, shoulder cover and a stylish wide brimmed hat.

2

Most important of all - treat yourself! Every once in a while splash out as much as you can afford (no need to go daft) on a great outfit, or fabulous shoes or a visit your local beauticians or salon and get yourself made over! Not only will you look great but you’ll feel great too - and that’s the first step towards good health! And if you’re not sure where to go then may we suggest our friends at Rococo? We’ll see you there!

A Day In The Life with Susan Lawrence of Piece Of Minds

Most days I start early and finish late but that’s okay because I like being busy. I have three offices - in Brigg close to where I live, Sheffield and Doncaster - so there will often be a long drive before my first session. My clients come from all over the country, including some from London and Scotland so at least I’m not the only one making an early start! No two days are ever exactly the same because I offer such a wide variety of therapies. I see a lot of clients for treatment with the Hypno-Band (see panel right) but also for Post Traumatic Stress and Pain Relief Clinics. The techniques I use can be applied to a wide range of conditions so

Everything that happens between myself and my client is confidential and that is vitally important. I always leave long gaps between my appointments so that there is no danger of clients overlapping. I take a full history from each new patient and before the first session I will frequently send out a detailed questionnaire which can be returned before we meet. That way it can be a proper working session and not just a fact finding exercise. Place is very important in the work that I do. I need a beautiful tranquil environment in which the client can feel happy and calm. I am very particular not only

The Amazing Hypno-Band Left - A tranquil and beautiful environment is an essential part of the therapeutic process - Susan Lawrence in her office

there’s never any danger of me getting bored! I spend a lot of time preparing for my sessions. I was a senior nurse for several years (before my career was ended by injury) and I learned then that the most important steps towards building a successful therapeutic relationship are to create trust and to be really thorough in getting to know the client. Each client has different issues and each needs to be treated as an individual - this is not a one size fits all business.

People

about how the room looks but also about how it sounds (mobile phones are switched off right at the start). I use music to achieve the right atmosphere - I need to be able to make people feel at ease. In my sessions I use the full range of therapeutic skills at my disposal including line therapy, CBT, NLP, EFT. I take a real mix and match approach to find what works best for the individual client. I don’t have a set length for sessions or an hourly rate - I charge per session and a session

lasts as long as is necessary. There is no point in calling time just as we seem to be making real progress. I’m the kind of person who always needs to be busy so I also offer training in a variety of therapies including Hypnotherapy and Reiki (I am a Reiki master) and I am a distributor for Herbalife products as well. I often end up at the office until late and then of course there is work to do at home but I always ensure that I leave time for a proper family life with my husband Peter and my four children. All in all it can be tiring but it is very rewarding. It’s a real privilege to watch people learning to overcome their problems and take control of their lives. That’s something I’m proud of.

The Hypno-Band (the hypnotic gastric band) is the world’s leading non-surgical weight loss technique. It is designed to help those who wish to lose weight but for whom the process is made difficult by their high BMI (Body Mass Index). It is a holistic therapy which looks not just at cutting back on calories but also at the client’s social and emotional relationship with food, seeking to resolve the issues which cause them to eat unhealthily and helping them to achieve their goals.

C-FAB

Fans of folk and blues music will have a new date to put in their diaries for next year following the success of this year’s inaugural C-FAB festival which took place in October in the grounds of the Cabourne Parva farm of Peter Kirke and Jayne Culver. High in the rolling countryside of the Wolds, sheltered by mature beech and sweet chestnuts and surrounded by fields full of horses they have made their estate into a place of great beauty and spirituality - home to their popular Lin Dhu Festival. Everywhere you look there are more surprises; guinea fowl stalk the shrubbery, Buddhas peer from the flowerbeds, the old brick garden wall is hung with birdcages and bright paper lanterns and tucked away in quiet corners are a traditional Celtic maze and a meditation pagoda.

The Caistor Folk & Blues Weekend the festival on top of the Wolds

The main auditorium is a purpose built eco music barn - constructed from straw and wood - and inside the walls are covered with brightly coloured images and the eclectic selection of furniture ranges from logs to three piece suites to a throne! All in all the setting could hardly have been more perfect for a celebration of the best of roots music and a roster of top notch performers made the event into something really special. Folk acts performing included Liverpool based minstrels Leafblade, local favourites Merlin’s Keep (ably assisted by rising local singer songwriter Amy Rainbow) and Uilleann pipes maestro Dicky Deegan whose masterclass on the instrument was a fine mixture of anecdote and musicianship. On the blues side of the set list the line up was equally impressive

Top left - The wolds at Cabourne Parva; Centre - Dicky Deegan on the Uillean pipes; Top right bargeman’s kettle by Argey Bargey Bottom - ‘Mister Cottonhouse’ Gary Ward of the Cottonhouse Shakers

with The Cottonhouse Shakers delivering their unique blend of funk, soul and blues, R&B from the Fabulous One Eyed Cats, a set from Peterborough trio Dr A’s Rhythm & Grooves, culminating in a standout performance of acoustic blues from troubadour The Legendary King Rollo. There was plenty going on for everyone including circus skills displays and training by The Earthbound Misfits, woodcarving demonstrations and a wide variety of craft stalls selling everything from musical instruments to driftwood sculpture. Add in great food and drink and excellent company - if you weren’t there you missed out - so make a note and we’ll see you next year!.

C-FAB 2013 is at Cabourne Parva May 24-26. Tickets and information from www.c-fab.co.uk

SME’s When you hear stories about business on the news it’s almost always the big companies that get all the attention - you might be led to think that they are the most important part of the economy. But in fact it’s businesses at the other end of the size spectrum - the so called small and medium sized enterprises which are the real powerhouse of prosperity. According to the Government a small business is any business that employs less than 50 people, between 50 and 250 it’s a medium sized business, below 10 it’s micro. Grouped together these small and medium enterprises are called SME’s. There’s a lot of them and we sometimes forget how important they are - but new figures from the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills paint a fascinating picture of just how important to the UK economy they really are. Of the 5 million businesses in the UK SME’s account

The Heart Of The Economy for 99%. They provide 60% of private sector employment and 50% of private sector turnover. SME’s employ 14 million people and have a combined turnover of £1,500 billion. That’s impressive enough but what is even more intriguing is that nine out of ten SME’s are actually micro enterprises with less than 10 employees. Hence, the mainstays of Europe’s economy are micro firms, each providing work for two persons, in average. This is probably one of the EU’s best kept secrets! Which all goes to show that we should never underestimate the power of the small businesses because we’d be an awful lot worse off without them.

The cold weather is on the way ...... Are You Ready For Winter ? Council Urges Caution As Winter Approaches With winter on its way NELC is urging drivers to consider how they drive and ensure that their vehicles are well maintained and serviced. According to Jason Longhurst, head of development: “If everyone thinks about their journey before setting out - about the condition of their car, what they may need and the route they will take - it will help to keep people safe at this time of the year. What’s more as most people have very little experience of driving in extreme conditions, such as very heavy rain, people need to take some time to consider how it affects their driving. Before a journey is made, drivers need to ensure that their vehicle is in a good condition and it is also useful

Before setting out, residents are advised to regularly check weather forecasts by listening to local and national weather broadcast and travel bulletins. Drivers need to be prepared to change plans if conditions on their route worsen. If conditions are very bad, then it is worth considering if the trip is necessary. If a journey is deemed essential then drivers need to be prepared and think about how they drive to the weather conditions they face. As driving in severe weather

conditions is very different than at other times of the year, to remain safe, drivers need to adapt they way they drive. Drivers also need to remember that if the worse happens and they do get stranded, not to panic. The advice is to stay with your vehicle, and call the emergency services on your mobile phone. Do not try to drive through floods as the road surface may no longer be there. For winter driving the Council offers these suggestions. Before setting out make sure that your lights are clean and working, the battery is fully charged, windscreen is clean and the washer bottle filled with screen wash. Tyre should be in good condition, brakes are working well; and fluids topped up, especially windscreen wash (to the correct concentration to prevent it freezing), anti-freeze and oil Motorists should also travel prepared with an emergency kit containing a tow rope, a shovel, wellington boots, a hazard warning triangle, a first aid kit (in good order), a working torch,

Flash Fiction

in Complete Turkey Seasonal Flash Fiction from Josie Gray The

I don’t know where I had been, just out and about, mooching in the winter afternoon, avoiding the atmosphere at home and the preparations for another perfect Christmas, probably. Dad was up the step-ladder with his camera. He was focusing on the dresser at the end of the kitchen. Mum was directing, standing behind with hands on hips. A cigarette hung from her lips. My sisters were on the stairs, giggling from behind the safety of the banisters. I looked at them curiously. ‘What’s up?’ I said. ‘The turkey, it’s only got one leg!’ the youngest said, grinning. I thought it best to slide upstairs

and to hide so I could not be held responsible in any way for the condition of the next day’s lunch but I was summoned. ‘Just look at this bird,’ Mum said. ‘How many legs does it have?’ I inspected the unfortunate carcass with a degree of distaste. I was having one of my vegan stages and was causing enough trouble regarding Christmas dinner already. I had no wish to add to the drama by counting the wrong number of legs. On inspection it was clear that the animal was indeed missing one of its legs and Dad was gathering photographic evidence with which to confront the butcher after the festive season had

passed. Eventually, as Dad packed away his camera and Mum concluded that there was nothing for it but to cook the damn thing and hope there was nothing else wrong with it, she turned to me and said, ‘Just check your nut roast will you.’ ‘Why?’ I asked. She sighed with exasperation and said, ‘because at this rate, I’ll open it tomorrow and there’ll be no bloody nuts in it.’ If you’re a keen amateur writer - or even if you’ve never tried before - why not have a go at a piece of Flash Fiction - 500 words or less - and email it to us at deborah.staff@ divapublications.co.uk. We’ll print the best ones so why not give it a go!
