hings have been pretty busy for the past few weeks at Diva Towers. We’ve had an interview with the Mayor, been to the Lincolnshire Show and Armed Forces Day and we’re all ready for the carnival. We’ve also spent a lot of time training Bob the dog to look like he’s going on holiday. If you’re going away then we hope you have a great time and there’s some useful advice on car hire abroad at the back of the mag. If you’re staying around then there’s lots going on, from music to theatre and from cinema to arts festivals, so you won’t be short of stuff to do. Have a great summer!

PETS Would you like the pleasure of canine company without the expense or the long term commitment? Then consider being a doggy holiday host with

Barking Mad We all love a holiday but every dog owner knows how difficult it can be booking to go away and worrying about a beloved pet. Relatives can sometimes step in to help but for many people kennels are the only option and although they can be very good, it isn’t quite like home. Fortunately now there’s an alternative. When a dog owner goes on holiday, their dog can have a holiday too - with Barking Mad. Barking Mad are travel agents for dogs, organising thousands of doggie holidays nationwide every year, and due to the popularity of their service the Grimsby office is looking to recruit new hosts. To be part of the Barking Mad family all you need is to be a dog lover and to have sufficient free time. It often suits a retired person or someone who works from home. If you have a sociable dog that enjoys company or if you just yearn for canine company this could be for you.

Barking Mad offer a fantastic opportunity to enjoy all the companionship and exercise that comes with having a dog but without the expense. All visiting dogs arrive with food and bedding so there is no cost burden for the host and everything is arranged in strict confidence so you never have to worry about anyone other than a Barking Mad representative coming to your home.

The host role is very flexible. You can host as frequently as you wish and many hosts soon build up a selection of doggy friends that can become regular visitors. And you’re never left feeling on your own because your local office will always be available, 24 hours a day, for help and support if you need it. Collection and delivery is carried out by Barking Mad and they also provide Public and Employers Liability Insurance. If doggy hosting sounds like something you would enjoy then why not give Claire a call at the number below to arrange an informal meeting. This will help her to match the right dog to your home and lifestyle. You can discuss the kind of dog that will suit you best so everything works just right for you, the owner and most importantly for your doggy visitor. If you love dogs and would like to enjoy the company of a visiting dog then please contact: Claire Dutton 01472 822233 or claire.dutton@barkingmad.uk.com.

IN THE KNOW CARE FOR YOUR

CAR THIS SUMMER

Q&A

with Tony Briggs of Kingsway Tyres

Kingsway are well known for selling and fitting tyres but you do a lot more besides. What other services do you offer? We offer a wide range of essential services to keep your vehicle running smoothly and safely, including servicing your car as per the manufacturer’s requirements to keep your warranty valid. Also air con servicing (which is not only important in this weather for keeping you cool but also helps to keep fuel bills down), suspension and geometry. And of course tyres of all makes and sizes from wheel barrows to tractors. We’ve got loads of tyres to suit everyone’s budgets. What are the most important things for drivers to look out for in this hot weather? Air con and coolant levels are obviously important in the high summer but hot weather can have a massive effect on your tyre pressures. That’s not so well known and it’s not as easy to spot but it’s very important.

What factors should drivers take into account when choosing tyres?

Changes from optimum pressure can cause tyres to wear unevenly and have an adverse effect on handling so it’s important keep a careful eye on them. We will check your tyres free of charge, whether it’s once a week or once a day.

regularly. Most modern engines need a full service at least once a year with maybe an oil change in between. You should have a routine and stick to it to keep repair costs and fuel consumption to a minimum. Is it a good idea to get your vehicle serviced just before your MOT is due?

Is the summer a good time of year for car owners to get their vehicle serviced? I don’t think there’s a best or worst time for that. Whatever the make or model of your vehicle it needs servicing

That’s a popular option these days - certainly it can help with your emissions and it also helps as a reminder for when your service is due.

Most of us will never get to appreciate the difference between cheap tyres and top of the range. And that’s a good thing because the time when the difference shows is when you are depending on your tyres to avoid an incident. Tyres should be selected based on your own individual requirements and the type of use they will have. We are always happy to advise on the best solution. The only rule of thumb is make sure they’re in good order and buy the best tyres you can afford. And if someone is faced with a choice between a service that’s due and some extra holiday spending money? It looks like a tough choice but if you’re thinking about going away in your car then the service isn’t a luxury - it could be the difference between a good holiday and a miserable one.

WELCOME TO WELLOWGATE

Wellowgate Throughout history Wellowgate has been one of the most important streets in the borough of Grimsby. It was a key economic thoroughfare in mediaeval times - the original route between the town centre and Welholme Abbey and played a vital part in the Victorian railway boom which created the conditions for the rise of the fishing industry. Recent years may have seen the street looking a little below its best but there has been a quiet process of urban renewal going on as new shops have opened, bringing a new style of high quality boutique retail to the Top Town area. We asked Sue Almond of Home Is Where The Heart Is to fill us in on some of the reasons why shoppers should start adding Wellowgate businesses to their favourites lists.

Wellowgate has been one of the town’s best kept secrets for a while now but it has seen some big changes recently. Do you think this could be Wellowgate’s moment to step out of the shadow of Top Town? We’re certainly hoping so. The new hotel development should make people notice the street again - we’re so much more than just a quick route into town. It’s become a fabulous little shopping area with something for everyone and it’s so easy to park, with masses of space on Duchess Street. We think that makes Wellowgate the ideal place to start your shopping trip - without having to use the nightmare multi-storeys. It’s only a short distance to the market and Freshney Place. What does Wellowgate have to offer that makes it worth a detour from Top Town? There’s a lovely choice of great little shops, all independents, all selling products that will be hard to find anywhere else in town or offering top quality services. From retro fashion to gifts, from jewellery to homewares, not forgetting high end body art and tattoo removal. There’s also Jennies, one of the best tea rooms in town too so you can take the weight off your feet and grab a cup of tea and some superb cake in wonderfully retro surroundings. It always seems like a welcoming street. What’s the secret to creating spaces that people can enjoy shopping in? The most important thing is the Wellowgate businesses are all run by nice people who love what they do and are enthusiasts for the products they sell. So they’ll always be glad to welcome people into their premises, not just because they are potential customers but also because they take a pride in what they do and they like people to see it. Most of us also have a strong online presence but it’s the face to face interactions, the showing off what we do, that makes running a Wellowgate business a real pleasure.

JUST FOR KIDS

all set for a day in space?

I

f you’re a bit tired of zoos and theme parks and on the lookout for a fantastic day out in the summer then one destination that ought to be on your radar is the National Space Centre in Leicester. Dominated by the 42 metre tower which houses the Blue Streak and Thor Abel rockets the centre is home to loads of fascinating space artefacts. You can sit in a Vostok capsule, like the one that carried Yuri Gagarin or visit a mock up of the Columbus Module from the International Space Station. There’s also a planetarium to take you on a fascinating sound and light journey into deep space, a replicated Martian planet surface and a genuine Soyuz capsule, one of only two on display in the West. The most valuable exhibit is MOP-4, a fully engineered flight spare of the Meteosat 7 weather satellite. When you’ve had your fill of the hardware you can learn about the possibility of life on other planets, see a piece of real moon rock or meteorite and even present your very own weather forecast! Over the years the fame of the Centre has spread worldwide. Many real life astronauts have paid a visit including the legendary Buzz Aldrin and when the Japanese Hayabusa spacecraft landed on the Itokawa asteroid it left a sheet of aluminium engraved with the names of hundreds of visitors to the NSC. The Centre is open Tuesday to Saturday but check their website at www.spacecentre.co.uk for up to date details and if you’re keen to go you’ll find that out good friends Hough’s of Lincolnshire have a coach headed there very soon. Have fun!

NATURE

Bringing our unique local habitats back to life ....

The Lincolnshire Chalk Streams Project I

f you were asked to identify a rare natural habitat that supports a unique and priceless ecosystem you’d probably think of the African savannahs or the rain forests of Borneo or some other far off place. Chances are you wouldn’t think of anywhere close to home, and almost certainly not the back of the Laceby Acres but it’s there that Laceby Beck, one of Lincolnshire’s dozen chalk streams, flows through the fields to become the River Freshney.

Facing page - coming soon to a beck near you - the kingfisher, otter and water vole thanks to the work of the Lincolnshire Chalk Streams Project

There are only a few hundred chalk streams in the world, most of which are in England, many in Lincolnshire. They include Waithe Beck, the River Bain which flows through Horncastle, the Lud which flows from Louth to Tetney Lock and provided the route for the Louth Navigation Canal and the Great and Little Eaus. Chalk streams rise as springs on the slopes of hills whose underlying geology is porous chalk and the water which percolates through their subterranean aquifers is purified in the process so that the streams are sometimes said to run ‘gin clear’. In other areas they are often highly prized as trout streams but in Lincolnshire they tend to be a little smaller and shallower, although trout can be found in some places. In the past these streams have often been neglected, damaged by agricultural run offs and by sedimentation, (largely the result of their being adopted as ready made drains) but in recent years there have been major improvements in the care of these valuable habitats and that’s largely down to the work of the Lincolnshire Chalk Streams Project. From its base in Louth the project, which has been in existence since 2006, works with landowners and community groups to keep streams running freely and clean and to encourage the return of wildlife. This means encouraging the growth of native plants, such as water crowfoot

and starworts, which offer hiding places for aquatic creatures ranging from crayfish to the tiny caddis, mayflies and stone flies whose larvae hatch and live in the water and provide food for fish including minnows and brook lampreys. Alongside these smaller creatures the rejuvenated chalk streams often see the return of kingfishers, water voles and otters. Recently the Project have conducted a survey of Laceby Beck, clearing sediment and, revetting banks and removing obstructions to allow fish to travel the stream in both directions. The project is always keen to hear from anyone who might be interested in volunteering to help with their work, either by helping with clean up work or by joining their network of Riverfly volunteers who receive training in the recognition of many species of river life so that they can take samples and monitor the health of the streams. They’re particularly keen to hear from any schools who might like to get involved with their work. They can be contacted via their website which is can be found on the www.lincswolds.org.uk site. So if it sounds like your cup of tea get in touch – you’ll be made very welcome and in any case, next time you’re out walking along one of our local streams and a flash of blue darts by you’ll know that the hard work of the Lincolnshire Chalk Streams Project was probably partly responsible.

20

INTERVIEW When we meet he’s seated at the head of a large table in an impressive looking office on the ground floor of the Town Hall, surrounded by huge Victorian cabinets full of ornate ceramics and silverware. The walls are hung with signed photographs of members of the royal family who have visited the town over the years. In so ornate a room he makes a striking figure in his blue and white checked work shirt, with his sleeves rolled up. He doesn’t look as though he’s overawed by his new position, nor does he look as though he’s in love with the trappings of power. He looks like a man who’s ready for a day of hard work, which is what most of us would wish for in a local politician.

“Pulling together to make the area the best it can be.” The Peoples talks to Cllr Cliff Barber, the new Mayor of NE Lincolnshire

C

ouncillor Cliff Barber became the worshipful Mayor of North East Lincolnshire on May 28th 2015. His investiture and that of his wife Sally as Mayoress took place at the Mayor Making ceremony on June 11th. He’s Grimsby through and through, born when his family lived on the Grange estate, one of the first residents of the Willows, an alumnus of Willows, Great Coates and Whitgift schools. His father was a lumper and he worked as a runner on the docks when he left school. Later he spent many years as landlord of The Valiant. He entered politics in 2007 as a Lib Dem Councillor for Freshney ward, switching to Labour in the wake of the formation of the coalition. And in the run up to his inauguration he was nice enough to spare some time for a chat with The Peoples.

The Peoples: You’ve lived and worked in Grimsby all your life so my first question is are you proud to be a Grimbarian? And, since I’m sure you are, what is it that makes you most proud? I certainly am proud to be a Grimbarian. It’s a town full of history and tradition and the people of the borough are so friendly. Warm and welcoming but very down to earth. We don’t have deeply divided communities. Everyone gets on well together and enjoys the town together. And it’s important to remember that I’m Mayor not just of Grimsby but of North East Lincolnshire, including Cleethorpes and Immingham and many villages and I take great pride in representing the people of all these communities. And I’m a Mariners fan of course- I’m expecting big things this season! Your dad was a lumper and your first job was as a ship’s runner. You also ran TC’s club. So you saw at first hand the collapse of the fishing industry and the harm it did to the area. We recently spoke to Steve Norton of the FMA and he was very upbeat about the future of the local fish industries. Do you share his optimism? Ship’s runner was my first proper job. In those days it seemed like everybody’s first job was on the docks, working with fish in some way, either dragging fish or loading fish or packing fish. The decline of the fishing industry was rapid and devastating and we know those glory days will not return. Most fish comes in by container

INTERVIEW

now and a lot of it goes straight to merchants and bypasses the market but this is still Europe’s food town and with widespread innovation in the local industry and the development of the Seafood Grimsby and Humber brand prospects are brighter than they have been for many years. How did you get into the licensed trade? I was playing snooker with Kevin Kilmore, the former Grimsby Town and Scunthorpe player who was at that time the landlord of The Jubilee and he was saying how difficult it was to recruit a trainee manager. He was stressing and struggling about it and when I asked a few questions he said “Are you interested? I can train you.” I told him I’d never worked in a bar in my life but he said give it a go and the first night I worked the Dangerous Brothers were playing and the place was packed and he said “If you can cope with that you can cope with anything.” After that I never looked back and twenty five years later I’m still in the trade. I’m too busy to get there much now and I have to admit that a lot of the fun has gone out of it. The change of hours and the smoking ban have changed the industry beyond recognition. Drinking habits have

changed too. In fact I’ve decided to call it a day and give it up. I’ll miss the good bits, running the local on the estate where I was brought up. I’ll miss the people and friends I’ve made. Does the pub ever become like an informal surgery with people popping in for a pint and to bend your ear about a local problem? Frequently. Sometimes The Valiant is like a community centre with a bar in it. And not just in the pub. If I walk over to the shop for a newspaper

21

people will stop me and say “I’m glad I’ve seen you. The streetlight outside our back gate has gone out. It’s pitch black.” And I’ll promise to deal with it and hopefully it gets sorted. Sometimes I can have a two hour ward surgery and not see anyone and then I’ll walk back home and four or five people will stop to talk with me about an issue they have. And this is good because it’s important that local councillors are accessible because their job is to help sort out people’s problems. What made you decide to get involved in local politics? There was a company who wanted to build a lot of houses on the Willows. They wanted to build everywhere where there was a patch of green or a football pitch. Everybody was

22

INTERVIEW

fuming and there was to be a meeting and someone said to me “Hey Cliff, you’re good at talking. You go down and tell them.” So I did. And we got a petition up and I went round knocking on doors and people said to me “You should be a councillor.” One day Councillor Andrew de Freitas came to one of the meetings to observe and he suggested I stand. It wasn’t an easy decision to make and I talked it over with my wife first and then I decided to give it a go. What does a Mayor do? The job of the Mayor is to promote the borough. It’s a non-political role and the Mayor’s job is to do everything I can to help NE Lincs, to encourage growth and to get our name and brand out there. I’ll be at events and meetings, helping local business wherever possible, doing my best for the whole community. Are you looking forward to it? I’m looking forward to it very much. I was at an engagement last weekend at Cherry Garth. It was the Cleethorpes Rotary Club’s annual Kids’ Day Out, run in conjunction with the NSPCC. Eighty children were having a wonderful day and it was just so rewarding to be involved, and fantastic to see the smiles on their faces. I also presented a bouquet to a lady on her hundredth birthday and she told me some wonderful stories. Later that week I was at a meeting with the Lord Lieutenant and the Police Commissioner. Entirely different but equally fascinating and enjoyable. Last year I was Deputy Mayor and I was a judge for the Compass FM

Carers’ Awards. That was very moving and humbling. St Andrew’s Hospice is your charity for the year. Is that something that’s particularly close to your heart? As a publican I’ve always raised money for charity. When I was at TC’s it was the Humber Lifeboat but I have also been involved in raising money for the hospice. The work they do is incredible and everyone in the town knows somebody who has benefited from their work. I have seen friends in there and the care and support is incredible. We’ll be holding a 70s Ball at the Town Hall in December and hopefully we’ll raise a lot of money. And how are your family adapting to the idea that you’re the Mayor? Are they pleased? Have they bought lots of new clothes? They’re all exited and looking forward to it. My wife Sally will be Mayoress. She’s been poorly but she’ll attend as many events as she can. She has always given me her help and support during my whole career so this is a big year for her as well. My daughter Sarah and my son Scott have both taken a bit of ribbing about it but they don’t mind. I do wish my mother and father were still alive because they would be so proud. I used to bring my mother to Council meetings sometimes. What are the priorities for you in your year as Mayor? I’d like to help the local economy, help local businesses expand, bring new businesses in. I’d especially like

to improve the prospects of young people in the area and try to create new apprenticeships and opportunities for training. Times are hard. It’s important to help people get back onto their feet. And at the same time we need to help and protect the vulnerable in society which is not easy because the austerity programme means that there is very little money to spend. But this is North East Lincolnshire and the people are resilient and hard working and I’ve no doubt that we’ll all pull together to make the area the best it can possibly be. I’ll be proud to be a part of that. Mr Mayor, thank you very much for your time.

KNITTING

Lost Arts “It’s not Revived: about the the fall and rise of knitting and crochet

From all but forgotten pastime to uber cool craft for the on trend twenty something – knitting has seen a remarkable turnaround in its fortunes over recent years. The current trend for all things retro has helped of course, as have endorsements from celebrity knitters like Madonna, Julia Roberts and Kate Moss but yarns have changed too. Say goodbye to horrible crackly nylon and hello to stylish hand knits in beautiful colours and with the textures that only real wool can give. What’s so great about wool? Well to start with it’s natural, renewable and biodegradable – perfect for a modern world that is increasingly concerned with environmental issues. It’s also a great insulator so it keeps you warm, and breathable so it doesn’t make you sweat too much. And there’s almost no limit to what you can do with it. Wool makes great bags, toys and pom poms and that’s without mentioning the teams of dedicated guerrilla knitters who take over town centres in the middle of the night and cover benches, lampposts and traffic bollards with knitted covers. Oh and it looks great on a teapot. What more could you ask?

product. It’s all about the process.” says Kate Roberts of A Good Yarn

KNITTING

A

Good Yarn, in Cambridge Street, Cleethorpes is much more than just a wool shop. Established four years ago by Kate Roberts it’s also a place for learning and sharing skills and for getting ideas and inspiration and it’s a social hub – a place where people can pop in to knit and natter. As Kate explains - “In the past wool shops were for people who needed to make clothes. That’s knitting as a necessity. What people are interested in nowadays is knitting as craft. It’s about the fact that when you knit something for someone it is so much more than just clothing. It’s a gesture, a message, it’s showing your feelings for them.” Not so long ago knitting and crocheting were widely thought of as dying arts, but in the modern world where retro is cool and hand made is valued again, both crafts have taken on a new lease of life. Kate has a steady stream of visitors to her shop, young and not so young, male and female, who want to learn the basics and take up knitting as a hobby. “It’s relaxing” Kate explains, “but it also keeps your hands and fingers active and nimble. It doesn’t take up much space, so you can take your project around with you and at the end of the day you have made a thing of beauty that you can keep for yourself or give as a gift.” The shop offers courses and classes for beginners and for the experienced knitters and crocheters and of course stocks a fantastic range of wools, needles and patterns everything the knitter could need! Top brands include yarns by Sirdar, Rowan and Bergere de France and patterns by Kaffe Fassett, Debbie Bliss and Sarah Hatton so next time your wool basket is empty why not take a trip to A Good Yarn and see what wonderful things they have on offer. Happy knitting!

THOUSANDS ATTEND ARMED FORCES DAY

AND EVEN BETTER TO COME IN 2016!

C

leethorpes basked in glorious sunshine as the Armed Forces Day Parade 2015 came to town, cheered on by thousands of people who packed the pavements on either side to pay tribute. The route took members of the armed forces, veterans and local youth groups up St Peter’s Ave, through the Market Place and along Alexandra Rd to the Remembrance Gate where, following prayers and tributes from the Mayor and other dignitaries, Lord Howe announced that next year’s national Armed Forces Event will take place in Cleethorpes. Momentous news indeed and we’ve got an interview with Cllr Alex Baxter the event organiser in our next issue. Congratulations to everyone involved on a great day and here’s to next year.

FISH IS THE DISH

make the most of fish this summer

Mackerel and Cheese Tarts with Mackerel Salad Easy to cook and bursting with flavour, mackerel is great at any time of year but especially in summer. It’s good for you too - just bursting with all those Omega oil things that clever people on telly tell you about. Try simply wrapping them in foil and cooking on the barbecue or be a little bit more adventurous. Lovely Ingredients: 4 ready baked short crust tarts 50g feta cheese, crumbled 100g grated cheese of your choice

100g cottage cheese 1 egg 20ml cream 1tsp chopped chives or parsley or dill 2 smoked mackerel fillets, flaked

We all know that fish makes a great winter warmer but when it comes to barbie season we’re not so sure. Here we offer two fine fish recipes for high summer and al fresco dining, courtesy of our friends at

Method: Mix all the ingredients for the tart together and add half the flaked mackerel. Pour into the tart cases and cook in the oven at 170c until just set, about 15 minutes. Toss the remaining mackerel with salad ingredients of your choice. Place the mackerel tarts on to serving plates and pile the salad on top, drizzle with a little dressing and serve.

Salmon Samosas Grimsby is one of the UK’s leading centres for the processing of salmon, and our good friends JCS fish are salmon experts so here’s a good, simple but delicious recipe to celebrate them both. Ingredients: 200g cooked and flaked salmon 1 pkt filo pastry 100g feta cheese, crumbled 100g grated cheese 2 eggs Your choice of seeds or spices Method: Mix eggs and cheese and add the salmon, season with salt and pepper. Lay out a sheet of pastry, brush with butter and lay another sheet on top.

Brush again with butter. Cut in half lengthways, place some of the salmon and cheese at the bottom end of the pastry, fold the pastry from left to right, then right to left to form a triangle, keep folding until the length of pastry is used up. Place the samosas on a paper lined tray, brush with melted butter, sprinkle with seeds or spices of your choice and bake in the oven at 180c for 15-20 minutes or until golden and crispy.

GARDENS

Gardens can have it all with salvia colourful, fragrant and wildlife friendly

B

ringing colour, fragrance and wildlife to any garden, salvia delivers a triple whammy for gardeners looking for must have plants. As an all-in-one solution, it’s ideal for the Horticultural Trades Association’s Plant of the Month for July 2015. A member of the sage family, salvia are a diverse group of plants that include annuals, herbs and herbaceous and evergreen perennials. They are free flowering and sun-loving plants, they make a colourful display in borders from July until the frost comes. Offering fragrance and various shades of red, cream, purple and pink salvia is also a good pollinator and highly attractive to bees and butterflies. Salvia is a particular favourite of BBC Gardener’s World presenter Pippa Greenwood who says, “I’m a great fan of the hardier salvias. Even before the buds open they are attractive plants with erect stems, often with aromatic foliage and forming a sort of clump of exclamation marks. Then when the flowers appear , usually in shades of violet, purple, pink or white and with stunning, showy bracts, they can bring any sunny border to life. Salvias are long flowering, with the potential to put on a great show through much of the summer and into autumn. If you remove the flower spikes as soon as they have faded flowering carries on longer (or give the entire plant a serious haircut as soon as the last of the flowers fade and you can often enjoy a second flush of flowers in October.) They are loved, not only by gardeners but also by bees and butterflies. Provide these gorgeous plants with a well-drained but humus rich soil and plenty of sun and they are easy to grow...seriously rewarding and....simply gorgeous!” Recommended RHS AGM varieties include: Salvia Hot Lips, Salvia Seascape, Salvia Firecracker, Salvia Amistad and Salvia Black and Blue but whichever you choose yoyu can be sure of a wonderful display, and if you’re looking for the best in companion plants then the HTA recommends Phormium ‘Yellow Wave’, Hebe ‘Midsummer Beauty’, Pittosporum ‘Purpureum’ or Digitalis x mertonensis. Should look a treat in late summer. Happy gardening!

SADDLE UP FOR SUMMER

Attention all cyclists in the mood for a challenge! Do you fancy a hundred miles (or kilometres) round Lincolnshire on a Sunday morning? If you do then what you need may well be the....

Ross Tiger 100

L

ocal cyclists will compete against riders from across the country on Sunday 2nd August when the Ross Tiger 100 event sets out from Bradley Pitches. Competitors can choose between two routes through the Lincolnshire countryside, a flat 100km and a hilly 100 miler. The event, which is being run in conjunction with Lindsey Roads Cycling Club, is the second in a series of three organised by SportiveHQ, the first of which was a Flat & Fast 100 around Thorne on June 6th. The series concludes with the Trent Valley 100 around Gainsborough on 18th October. The Ross Tiger 100 offers riders a choice of courses, both of which start by heading down Bradley Road towards Waltham. At this point the shorter route heads east towards Humberston before looping across the coastal flats past Somercoates and almost to Mablethorpe before returning via Manby and Ravendale. The longer route, which also includes some serious gradients in the Wolds, turns right out of Waltham towards Barnoldby le Beck and heads for Caistor after which it reaches almost as far as Lincoln and Horncastle before returning

via Manby. That sounds like a pretty gruelling route to us, a real test of stamina and climbing ability! There’s a maximum of 600 places on each event and everyone who enters and turns up will receive entry into a prize draw with a chance of winning a Planet X Pro Carbon Shimano 105 Road Bike or a Planet X Stealth Sram Rival 22 Time Trial Bike. The starting point will be at Bradley Pitches, with car parking open from 6.45am, registration from 7.00am-9.00am and rides beginning between 7.45am and 9.30am. All bikes are welcome including TT and the minimum age for riders is 14. If it sounds like you’re ideal way to spend a Sunday morning you can get more details from www.sportivehq.com. Best of luck to everyone and we’ll see you there.

motoring A FAREWELL TO AN OLD FRIEND

THE END OF THE ROAD FOR THE PAPER COUNTERPART SO HOW DO YOU PROVE YOUR DRIVING HISTORY?

It’s always sad to say goodbye to an old friend so it is with heavy hearts that we bade farewell, on June 8th 2015, to our old mucker the paper driving licence counterpart. Somehow it was more than just a piece of dog eared paper. It was a statement of our identity and our freedom, our coming of age telegram, a bill of entitlement to the open road. And now it’s gone to that great filing cabinet in the sky.

On the plus side the abolition has saved millions of pounds a year in replacement costs but what about all those things we needed the counterpart for? What if we need to prove to a potential employer or a car hire firm what good points free drivers we are? What then hey? The answer is that we will now be able to log on to the DVLA website and obtain a code, valid for 72 hours, which we can share with those who

have a legitimate interest in knowing our driver status. To make life easier the DVLA have produced some fact sheets on the subject and we have one overleaf detailing the process for hiring a car abroad. Furthermore, to assuage our suffering and appeal to our deeply ingrained sense of patriotism the DVLA have altered the design of the plastic driving licence to incorporate the Union flag. It’s a lot prettier, we’ll give you that, but will it fill the aching void in our hearts that was left by the death of the counterpart? Only time will tell.

HIRING A CAR ON holiday? If you are hiring a car on holiday, a change to the driving licence may affect you. The paper counterpart to photocard licences was abolished on 8 June 2015, it isn’t legally valid and won’t be updated. Before you go on holiday, make sure you check with your hire company what documents they will want to see.

• this ✔ • that ✔

Some may ask for a unique code which will let them check your driving record. 72 hrs To get a code go to GOV.UK and search for view driving licence. To protect your privacy each code is only valid for 72 hours and can only be used once.

If you need more information about this change, go to GOV.UK and search for no more counterpart.

Why?

You should destroy your counterpart (but keep your actual licence – that’s the plastic photocard or one of the paper licences which were issued until 1998).

We replaced around 445,000 lost counterparts last year and each replacement cost the driver £20.

Car hire companies can now view a driver’s record that’s guaranteed to be completely up-to-date (reducing their risk and increasing road safety).

IN THE KNOW

FLOOD DEFENCES EXHIBITION

ESSENTIAL PROTECTION FROM WIND AND WAVES

A

AT THE DISCOVERY CENTRE

new exhibition at the Cleethorpes Discovery Centre offers a fascinating insight into the effect of tides and weather on our local coastline and the work done by the Environment Agency and NELC Ecology officers, in conjunction with ABP to mitigate their potential for harm. Anyone who remembers the storm surge of 2013 will know just how powerful and destructive the tider can be and the renewal of the sea wall is a huge step towards protecting the town from the elements. The exhibition explains the science of tides and its centrepiece is a full size model of a single block from the new sea defences (see image above). Nearly a thousand of these blocks, each 3 metres high and weighing more than 20 tons have been laid on the stretch of sea wall from the dock entrances toward Cleethorpes, protecting homes and businesses in the area from flooding. As NELC Chief Executive Rob Walsh observed at the opening of the exhibition, sea defences are an essential part of the infrastructure of any coastal economy and the new wall will bring economic benefits to the town by making it a more attractive prospect for industrial investment. In addition new gates have been installed at the dock entrance at a cost of over £5 million (see images right) and further along the coast work has been undertaken with the restructuring of the dunes area vegetation and the renewal of the gabion wall at the Fitties beach. All in all it’s an impressive and reassuring feat of engineering and many thousands of people in our area will have less reason to fear future storm surges because of it. The exhibition runs until October and it’s well worth a visit – check the Discovery Centre website for further details.

TOP QUALITY FRESH CAUGHT LOBSTER, CRAB & WHELKS FROM FASTLINE SHELLFISH

f you like shellfish then you’ll know that it’s a case of the fresher the better – that’s why you should pay a visit to Fastline Shellfish. Fastline catch and sell lobsters, crabs and whelks to the restaurant trade, wholesalers, fishmongers and also to the public from their premises on the North Wall and it’s a real family business, with Darren Kenyon doing the catching on his boat, the MV Sweetwaters, while the factory and shop are the domain of his wife, Jenny. Darren sails on the morning tide each day to get an early start on the journey to the fishing grounds. He usually fishes in the Humber Mouth between two and four hours out although in winter he may go a lot further. He usually has about 1400 pots out on any given day, strung together in fleets of 40 or 50 each and they have to be hauled up and emptied, rebaited and replaced. It’s hard work, especially in bad weather and of course you have to be careful to keep your fingers away from harm – those claws can give a nasty nip.
