Freemo Bounces Back Market revamp and independent retailers help to put the bustle back in Grimsby’s most iconic shopping street

People have been lamenting the demise of Freeman Street as a shopping destination for so long it's sometimes hard to remember the times when it was a hive of activity and commerce, the centre of the town's economy, with a thriving pub on every corner, a packed market, big name stores like Woolworths (remember them?) and Marks’s and of course the ever present waft of fishiness blowing down from the direction of Fish Docks. Those days may have gone never to return but good old Freemo is enjoying a revival, led not by national chain stores but by unique independent retailers like Gallagher’s Music, Replay Records and Grimsby Sewing and Knitting, and by improvements to the market facilities. Seems like hardly a week goes by without someone telling us about something new and good on the street so we thought we'd go down and take a look for ourselves, and there’s no doubt about it - Freeman Street is on the up!

reeman Street Market opened in 1873 amongst the open fields and rolling countryside of the East Marsh and has witnessed many changes over the years. Until recently the market shared in the general decline of Freeman Street itself but now it’s an essential part of the revival in the area’s fortunes, backed by investment from the Freemen and the European Union. The man leading the turnaround is Sean McGarel, whose background in market gardening and trading – he had a vegetable stall on Top Town Market for many years – means he understands exactly what makes a market tick. He took the time to talk to us so we started by asking him about when he first took charge.

What was the biggest challenge you faced when you took over at the market? I think the biggest problem was getting people to buy into the redevelopment project. At that time the market was looking somewhat run down and there was a concern that it was going to shut down by the Freemen. This was never the case. So the hardest task was to make people believe we were serious about our plans. What are the most important changes that someone who hadn’t visited the market in a while would notice if they came in today? Since 2004 the Freeman have spent around 2 million pounds turning the market into a more appealing place to shop. It’s brighter, cleaner and we’ve changed the layout of the stalls and widened the aisles to make it less cluttered. We’ve also introduced new types of retail units including shops and barrows. The

barrows allow small businesses to test the water with relatively small financial commitment and they help to bring a wider variety of products onto the market. There are a number of excellent cafes; The Courtyard, with its very own shop units, the Vine Café and of course the Pea Bung. Sometimes the hardest decision of the day is deciding where to have lunch! The market also has state of the art offices to let, an exhibition space and our very own media centre operated by Minimatt Films. We hold a variety of special events to keep shoppers entertained, there’s always something going on whether it’s music or street theatre or seasonal celebrations. People are getting to know that the market is a great place to spend time, shop and relax. And prospects for the future? I think there are some exciting times ahead. We’re planning to carry on with our improvements and it seems the street is on a bit of a roll too. I used to think the street needed a big name store to attract shoppers back but in fact what we have are many smaller excellent specialist independent retailers. What we need are more of these to add to the diverse appeal of Freeman Street and the market. It’s what we’ve tried to do on the market, make it an interesting, pleasant environment to be in. I’d say to anyone who hasn’t been in here for some time, try it, you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

We Wish You A Merry Fishmas

Chances are that when you sit down to your Christmas dinner you’ll be tucking into roast turkey with all the trimmings. It’s traditional after all. If you’re feeling daring you might be having beef or a nice piece of gammon. But across large parts of the world the centrepiece of the Yuletide spread is fish. There’s a wide variation of recipes of course, with Spain, Portugal and Brazil favouring salt cod while in Poland the preference is for freshwater fish, usually carp. Across eastern Europe fish soup is an essential part of the big day but it is in Italy that fish plays the most important role, with the Feast Of The Seven Fishes. Originating in Southern Italy, and still popular in the United States the feast involves seven fish courses, served on Christmas Eve. So if you fancy a change from the same old same old this Christmas why not give Christmas fish a whirl. Whether it’s smoked salmon or prawn cocktail or halibut (see recipes over the page) it’ll make a fantastic change and there’s guaranteed to be no squabbling over the parson’s nose.

Tired of turkey and bored with beef? Make more of fish this Christmas! with the help of some delicious recipes courtesy of Seafish - the number one authority on seafood Prawn Cocktail with a Mango Salsa Ingredients: 160g cooked, peeled prawns Zest and juice 1 lime 4 tbsp low-fat Greek yogurt 1 mango, peeled and stone removed Â˝ red chilli, deseeded and diced, plus a few thin slices to garnish 2 spring onions, sliced 3 leaves basil, shredded 1 baby gem lettuce, shredded

Method: Mix the lime zest into the yogurt and season with a little salt and pepper. Cut a few thin slices of the mango for decoration, then dice the rest. Mix the diced mango with the chilli, lime juice, spring onions and basil to form a salsa. To serve, layer a little salsa in the bottom of a cocktail glass, then add shredded lettuce, then some prawns, then yogurt. Repeat until the glass is full, finishing with a spoonful of yogurt. Garnish with chilli and the mango slices.

Oven Poached Halibut with Oranges and Grapes Ingredients: 2 x 170g portions halibut fillet butter, for greasing 1 shallot, finely diced 8 seedless green grapes, halved 1 orange, peeled 2 tbsp white wine or apple juice 100ml whipping cream 250g bag spinach chopped fresh parsley, to garnish Method: Preheat the oven to 160Â°C/gas mark 4. Rub the base of a small ovenproof dish with butter, scatter the shallots and grapes, and lay the fish on top. Segment the orange. Set aside half of the orange segments. Squeeze out the juice from the other half and pour the juice over the fish, together with the white wine (or apple juice). Top with a piece of buttered silicone paper, buttered side against the top of the fish. Place the dish on the top shelf of the oven for 15 minutes or until the fish is just cooked through.

When cooked, remove the fish from the dish, set aside and keep warm. Pour the contents of the dish into a small pan and bring to the boil. Once the cooking liquid from the fish has reduced by half, add the cream and bring back to the boil. Check the seasoning and consistency of the sauce, remove from the heat and stir in the reserved orange segments. While the sauce is reducing, steam the spinach. Serve the spinach with the halibut and sauce, garnished with fresh parsley.

Darren sails on the morning tide to get an early start on the way to the fishing grounds. He usually fishes in the Humber Mouth between two and four hours out although in winter he may go further. He has about 1400 pots out on any given day, strung together in fleets of 40 or 50 each. They have to be hauled, emptied, rebaited and replaced. It’s hard work, especially in bad weather and you have to be careful to keep your fingers away from harm – those claws can deliver a nasty nip if you let them! Meanwhile Jenny has been at work since 6am getting ready for the arrival of the vans that will take Fastline produce to shops and markets all over the country. Later she divides her time between serving customers who call in and taking orders on the phone. It’s non stop - with such a reputation for quality they’re always in demand. Next door to the shop is the processing area where the day’s catch is readied for sale. Fastline sell whole crab and lobster but their dressed crabs are also very popular, the shells packed with brown

Get your garden ready for nature! L ate autumn is the perfect time for making some changes to your garden, but for nature lovers there are always compromises to be made. So what are the most useful steps you can take to make your patch a paradise for wild birds and animals while still having a great looking garden? The first step of course is to invest in a supply of seeds, mealworms and peanuts and get those bird feeders filled up. But feeding can’t provide all the nutrition that birds need, so it’s important to manage your garden to provide a range of natural

food resources as well, through well-managed lawns, shrubs and flowerbeds. Don’t cut plants back to ground level too early and if possible try to have a wild area to provide cover. Leave seed heads to overwinter. Thistles and teasels, for example, are highly favoured by many birds, such as goldfinches. Now is also the time to start thinking about providing cosy homes for the feathered friends which visit your garden. Many birds will readily set up home and roost if provided with nest boxes. It’s best to remove old nests once the breeding season is over. The

nests of most birds harbour fleas and parasites which remain to infest young birds that hatch the following year unless the box is cleaned with boiling water. Once the box is clean and dry, a handful of hay or wood shavings can be inserted into the box to keep it snug for roosting birds or small mammals. If you have a pond, there’s no harm in clearing the leaf litter from it, but resist the temptation to discard or move the debris too far away as it may provide shelter for a whole host of creatures. And don’t forget, if you’re lighting a bonfire, please do a double check for hibernating hedgehogs!

Car Buyers: Get Wise To New Rights

e all love buying a new car but it can seem like a risky business especially for those with relatively little car knowledge or experience. In particular we worry about hidden faults that may mean that our new pride and joy turns out to be a dud, or a money pit, or both. Since the new Consumer Rights Act came into force in October however things are a lot easier, with important new rights for buyers that will make a big difference in the event that problems arise. The new rights take effect in different ways according to how long the buyer has had the car. This is known as the system of tiered responses. The first tier of rights are in effect for the thirty days after a vehicle is purchased. If during that time buyers think they have been mis-sold a car or if a fault is revealed, the new ‘shortterm right to reject’ allows the buyer to demand a full refund. Previously in these cases the dealer could simply replace or repair a faulty item or part but the buyer is no longer obliged to let them try to do so.

The second tier of rights kick in after thirty days have expired and last until six months after the purchase. If a fault is discovered during this period the dealer must repair or replace the faulty part, and will only have one opportunity to fix the problem. If a repair or replacement is not possible or is unsuccessful, the buyer will still

be able to demand a reduced price or exercise their ‘final right to reject’ and demand full or partial repayment. The changes (which apply to used cars as well as new, but only to sales by businesses to consumers) are likely to prompt a big shake up of the way dealerships operate in future, with much more emphasis being put on ensuring that cars for sale are in tip top condition. It’s also worth being aware that the new rights apply to other kinds of goods as well, not just cars, but the motor trade is likely to be among the most significantly affected and from now on consumers are in the happy position of being able to buy much more safely, in the knowledge that they are protected from the danger of hidden faults.
