Wilfred Prickles to Sticky Janet The Peoples pays a visit to Elaine Drewery at Authorpe Hedgehog Care

ilfred Prickles was the first, the original. They disturbed his mother and the little ones when they were clearing out the stables. The rest of the family decamped but Wilfred was left behind and Elaine took him in, learned to feed him, kept him warm. He departed next spring, restored to health and ready to make his way in the hedgehog world, but Elaine had fallen for the charms of hedgehogs and although she didn’t realise it yet her life had changed for good. Since then thousands like Wilfred have arrived at Elaine Drewery’s home in Authorpe, near Louth. Orphaned, maimed by cars or lawn mowers or bonfires, the victims of pesticides or pets or the stupidity of people, they’ve all been welcomed and cared for and most have been returned to the wild. Elaine is the legendary ‘hedgehog lady’ and mum of Corinne, singer with Swing Out Sister and she’s been caring for hedgehogs for over thirty years now, often alone but nowadays she has helpers. Stacey and her mum Tracey come every day (frequently including weekends) from Louth to clean out the wards, prepare food, and to tend to sick animals. It’s a non stop job and new patients come in almost every day. The first thing you realise when you cross the threshold is that this is a house where hedgehogs come first. There are hedgehogs everywhere and not just real ones. China hedgehogs, knitted hedgehogs, carved wooden hedgehogs. Hedgehogs made of glass or crystal. When I visit there are ten large boxes covered with tea towels in the small living room, each rustling occasionally as its occupants wake up and start to explore their new accommodation. These are the recent arrivals. Each box is carefully labelled. Every hedgehog that passes through Elaine’s hands is

“Some names are more common than others. They get so many Spikes they have to give them a surname to tell them apart.” given a name relating to where they were found, or who brought them in or to some aspect of their personality or story. The names let them keep track of which animals are which so they can give an answer when finders ring up for progress reports. Sometimes the finders will already have given the hedgehog a name when they bring them in. Some names are more common than others. They get so many Spikes they have to give them a surname to tell them apart. When Sticky Janet arrived she was just called Janet but she developed a bad case of mange which they treated with an application of Manuka honey. They started calling her Sticky Janet and it stuck. So did everything else. She left fully cured though. The box nearest my feet contains a family of week old hoglets (it’s a word, honest, you can look it up) and is labelled The Boston Babes. They arrived in the small hours of the morning, orphaned by a road accident, and too small to fend for themselves. At the moment they are too cold to be active and are sleeping, all piled on top of one another, with a hot water bottle beneath them for heat. In a few hours they will start to make their presence felt. In the box next door (labelled the Storey Trio) the occupants are already up and about and scuffling against the walls. At present there are about eighty patients in residence but that number can rise to over 150 in winter. Elaine and her team try to ready their charges for

“The hedgehog hospital is independent and receives no money from any other organisations – even the ones who list it on their websites.” release as soon as they can but when they arrive late in the year they do not have time to build up the layer of body fat needed to help them survive hibernation and so they have to be kept over winter. Many of the arrivals are orphans but some are adults. First task is to deflea them and to remove mites and ticks, next is to get them warm and eating. Hedgehogs are mostly insectivores in the wild but they’re also partial to meal worms, cat food (but not fish flavoured), granulated peanuts, avocado, even bird seed. They should not be given bread and milk even though they love it. It just makes them ill. They’re happy drinking water. On average they cost forty pence each to feed per day, which means the food bill for the hospital can exceed £400 per month. When they have recovered sufficiently they can be moved through to the Oliver Brown Convalescent Ward, a brick outhouse whose walls are stacked floor to ceiling with hedgehog pens. They stay here while they are nursed back to full health. Of course many who arrive require expert medical attention and Elaine’s vet bills run to £300-£500 per month. The hedgehog hospital is independent and receives no money from any other organisations – even the ones who list it on their websites. Some money comes in from donations or bequests. They receive some sponsorship from the Spike’s World hedgehog food company and there is a donation box in Sainsbury’s

in Grimsby but most of the funding comes from Elaine’s pension. The final stage in the rehabilitation process is for the now healthy hedgehogs to be placed in the outside runs where they will be left alone for a few weeks to get them used to living as hedgehogs again. They quickly learn to be nocturnal once more and to forage for food that is hidden around their pens, then they’re ready to be released back into the wild. No hedgehog stays more than one winter. Limbless hedgehogs are released into enclosed gardens. There’s no shortage of would be adopters although Elaine is picky about who takes a them. “No one who uses slug pellets. No one who has a Jack Russell. And no one who says something stupid. I’m quite prepared to be rude if necessary”. You get the impression she means it. Woe betide anybody who crosses Elaine Drewery when the welfare of hedgehogs is at stake. Authorpe Hedgehog Care can be found online at www.hedgehogcare.org.uk and on Facebook. For hedgehog related emergencies the 24 hour phone number is 01507 450221. There are lots of ways to help support the hospital, ranging from making a donation via PayPal to sending them towels, large plastic and cardboard boxes, tissues or kitchen rolls, (not just the cardboard tube from the middle) or foods including cat and dog food (not fish or pork flavoured). All help is gratefully received and every penny raised goes to helping to care for sick and injured hedgehogs.

GAS SAFETY

Carbon Monoxide Keep yourself and your family safe from the silent killer

I

n the past year, nine people in the UK have died from poisoning as a result of exposure to carbon monoxide (or CO) caused by gas appliances, and many more have suffered serious long term health problems. An estimated 4,000 people go to hospital each year with symptoms of CO poisoning, which in severe cases can lead to brain damage. Known as the silent killer because you can’t see it, taste it or smell it, CO can leak into your home as a result of poorly fitted and dangerous gas appliances such as boilers, cookers and fires. To keep your home and family safe the Gas Safe Register has issued a set of tips which could help prevent CO leaks, explosions and fires, and keep homes and families safe.

15-21 September 2014 The Gas Safe Register

Gas Safe Register is the official gas registration body. It replaced CORGI in 2009. By law, all gas engineers must be Gas Safe registered. The Register has made safety its top priority. To help keep you and your family safe, make sure your gas appliances are working correctly. Get them checked at least once a year to stay gas safe. Visit www.staygassafe.co.uk to use Gas Safe Registers’ online map, which will help you find out how safe your street is, and sign up for our free reminder service to make sure your gas appliances are regularly checked. Always use a Gas Safe registered engineer when having gas work carried out in your home. You can find a registered engineer in your area by calling 0800 408 5500 or at www.GasSafeRegister.co.uk or by ringing the number of one of the firms appearing in this feature.

Look out for the Gas Safe Register symbol - the sign of a registered gas engineer

Five steps to carbon monoxide safety

Know the symptoms of CO poisoning

You will not be able to smell, taste or see carbon monoxide in your home. Knowing the symptoms of CO poisoning could save your life. The six main symptoms of CO poisoning are headaches, dizziness, nausea, breathlessness, collapse, and loss of consciousness.

Know the signs of CO in the home

2

Sometimes your home may show signs of CO. Any one of the following could be an indication of CO in your home. The flame on your cooker should be crisp and blue. Lazy yellow or orange flames mean you need to get your cooker checked. Keep your eye open for dark staining or sooting around or on

appliances, pilot lights that frequently blow out and increased condensation inside windows. All of these can be signs of problems which make the release of CO more likely.

3

Get your home gas appliances checked regularly

Faulty and unsafe gas appliances can produce CO, so get them checked at least once a year by a Gas Safe registered engineer. To sign up to our free reminder service, which will alert you when your appliance needs checking, visit www.staygassafe. co.uk.

14

Only use Gas Safe registered engineers.

4

One in five illegal gas jobs the Register investigates are deemed immediately dangerous, so make sure you only use a Gas Safe registered engineer. You can check an engineer is registered by asking to see their Gas Safe Register ID card and find local registered engineers at www. gassaferegister.co.uk or by calling 0800 4085500.

5

Fit an audible carbon monoxide alarm

Much like a fire alarm, a CO alarm will alert you to the presence of CO in your home.

ARTS

“The arts are vital. They can turn lives around.” The Peoples talks to Emma Middleton of Humber Taiko

E

mma Middleton is an actress, director, puppeteer and Taiko drummer. She attended the London School of Puppetry and has worked as a creative consultant in education. Together with Lisa Oliver she curates the annual Music4MS concert in the Minster. You must like being busy. Did you always want to be involved in performance? I was always interested in performing as a child. I founded Fusion because I wanted the opportunity to develop performances based on original writing that featured improvisation, storytelling, puppetry and physical theatre. We’ve performed all over the world and for the last two years we’ve taken the top prizes at the Skegness Youth Theatre Awards. At present I’m taking a back seat at Fusion to concentrate on other projects. Your main focus at the moment is on Taiko drumming. What is it and where did it originate? It’s a traditional percussion style that comes from Japan. Taiko is the Japanese word for drum. It’s performed ensemble and incorporates rhythm, movement and voice to create a mixture that’s both musically and visually exciting.

had trained with Mugyenko and I went to Osaka to study for a while. We regularly visit and train with Kagemusha Taiko in Devon who have supported us over the past few years and we are excited to be working in partnership with Hannah Jasmine Brunskill of Taiko Journey for a big Grimsby project in the coming year. Together Lisa and I founded Gyoko Taiko. Gyoko means fishing port in Japanese. We started with ordinary drums and developed from there and it has really caught on. There are now Taiko groups in Scunthorpe and Hull and we have founded Humber Taiko as an umbrella group covering the whole region. Does it benefit children to do drumming in school? Absolutely – kids love it, they take to it so quickly and without inhibition. Arts can have a profound effect on young people’s lives. They can help to engage kids who are almost unreachable with conventional methods. That’s why they are so important in a town like Grimsby. They can turn people’s lives around if they’re given the chance. Taiko drumming can give people a huge boost of confidence and self esteem. And it makes people happy. That’s important too. It’s not all about money. Children should be allowed to do things that make them happy. Adults too.

How did you become involved in Taiko? I was a percussionist at school but I gave it up to pursue my interest in puppetry. After leaving University I saw Mugyenko, a fantastic Scottish Taiko group and I was hooked. I teamed up with Lisa, who is a classically trained percussionist and

Gyoko Taiko is open to all - adults and children. The group meets at the John Whitgift Academy and can be contacted on 01472 323550. Fusion Youth Theatre’s next production is Hit, Like & Share, a new play by Josie Gray about online bullying, at St James’ House on 19th & 20th July.

Entry to the museum’s main collection is free (probably the best value ticket you’ll ever get) but there may be a small charge for some of the events listed below. Every day the museum’s Face To Face With History team of actors and stuntmen bring the collection of arms and armour to life, presenting wild west gunfights, rapier duels, poll axe combats and other dramatic performances. There are also weapon handling sessions. These sessions take place every day and are free. In the Armourer’s Workshop you can have a go at brass rubbing, heraldic design and copper embossing

and there’s Have-A-Go Sword Fighting where you can try your hand at this historic combat sport with our experts guiding you through the art of swordsmanship. There are demonstrations of the ancient sport of falconry and visitors can get up close to the birds after the show with the falconry experience and from August 12th-14th everyone’s favourite comic book heroes will be taking over the museum, with Iron Man, Judge Dredd and Batman all due to make an appearance. Finally, as part of the First World War Centenary programme, Atkinson Action Horses will present The Final Charge, an equestrian extravaganza set on the battlefields of Flanders. This thrilling show, packed with high energy, death defying stunts, is an event not to be missed. (Performances August 23rd-25th adults £8, concessions £6, family £25.) Visit www.royalarmouries.org for details of dates, times and charges and don’t forget that the nicest way to visit the armouries is to go with our good friends Hough’s of Lincolnshire. Have fun!

RAF Parachute Display Team are the stars of the 130th Lincolnshire Show

une 18th and 19th 2014 and the 130th Lincolnshire Show welcomed visitors to the Lincolnshire Showground for the annual celebration of everything that’s good about the county. There was plenty to see and do, with livestock competitions, show jumping, carriage driving and a parade of hounds in the main arena, and displays of equestrian acrobatics, ferreting and falconry taking place in the smaller show rings. There was also a wide variety of trade stands and displays of many traditional skills, from farriery to beekeeping and from fly fishing to trug making. Great stuff, but for those who were there on the Wednesday there was no doubting who were the stars of the show. That’s because this year saw the return of the RAF Falcons Parachute Display Team who gave a spectacular display to an enthralled crowd. The team, made up of parachute instructors from RAF Brize Norton, jumped from a height of 5,000 feet above the showground before igniting their smoke trails and forming a vertical stack and then landing in the main arena to the applause of a packed crowd. Heroes one and all.

HOMES Mobility becoming an issue? If you’re beginning to find the stairs a bit difficult then JC Pomfret Construction can offer an alternative to the stress and upheaval of moving home.

A

Making the most of your existing space! These images from a recent JC Pomfret home adaptation show a former garage converted into a self contained studio apartment consisting of a kitchen/ lounge area, a bedroom and walk in wet room complete with underfloor heating. The studio has gas central heating and everything that you would expect in a top of the range studio apartment and allows a relative to live with independence and comfort while still being close enough to enhance safety and ease worries.

s we get older mobility can become a problem and when it does the first thing many people think about is finding a home that’s better suited to their requirements. Which is great if you really want to move but for many people it can be a lot of unwelcome upheaval and can prove stressful and expensive. At JC Pomfret Construction they take a different view, believing that the first logical step when mobility becomes an issue is to adapt our existing homes to suit our changing needs, for example by creating new bathroom and shower facilities on lower floors, either by adding an extension or by remodelling existing space such as a spare room or garage. JC Pomfret have a wealth of experience and they offer a complete service, starting with your ideas, offering helpful advice and then putting those ideas into practice. They take care of the drawing up of plans and submitting them for official approval then manage the whole project to ensure that everything is done to the most exacting of standards. You don’t necessarily needs a lot of space, the costs can be surprisingly low and a JC Pomfret home adaptation carries the additional advantage that you’re adding value to your property. So when those stairs start to be a pain don’t immediately put up the For Sale signs. Give JC Pomfret a call and see if they can help you adapt and stay in the home you love.

G

illian Huteson and Steven Siddle are the proprietors of Serenity Memorials, one of the best known firms of memorial masons in the area. They’re busy people but Gillian found time to answer some questions for us about the business, her career and the satisfaction she derives from a job well done. What made you choose memorial masonry for a career? Is there a family connection or was it just by chance?

How does having offices at Grimsby and at Barton work? Do you spend a lot of time commuting or do you each cover one office? Our workshop is situated in Barton but our main office and showroom is here in Cleethorpes. Our customer base covers all of Lincolnshire and we often travel over to Barton to see families on home visits to arrange memorials. We also provide a comprehensive memorial service to

Both Steve & I are qualified Funeral Directors with over 60 years of experience between us. My career began in Devon in my parents’ business and Steve’s in Grimsby. We eventually came to work together and jointly developed Huteson & Sons Memorial Masons. An opportunity to combine that company with Serenity Memorials of Cleethorpes arose in 2009 and since then Serenity Memorials Ltd has steadily progressed.

“Helping you choose a fitting memorial for your loved one” Gillian and Steve at Serenity Memorials take pride in providing a sympathetic personal service. They can supply new memorials, modify or renovate existing stones and undertake safety surveys and consultancy. With no obligation quotations and full layout drawings you know exactly how your memorial will look before you buy. Bespoke memorials are a speciality and nothing is ever too much trouble.

IN BUSINESS many Funeral Directors from Grimsby & Cleethorpes to Hull, York and Doncaster so logistically Barton is an ideal location for our workshop. How important is it for you to be both compassionate and businesslike with people who are grieving? When you are bereaved it can be a very confusing time. We feel we are able to offer clear, sympathetic comprehensive advice backed up with a professional service. Offering our customers the chance to tell us what they want is of paramount importance to us. Often people know what they want but don’t know how to tell you.

technical side involving the fixing and I like the artistic design side, so we work well as a team. We have to be knowledgeable about both sides to be able to design the memorials in the first place. How has the world of memorial masonry changed during your careers? Time changes everything and where once a man would sit at a workbench for days carving stones and letters by hand, advances in technology have reduced this although we do still employ time served masons who have these skills.

Do you enjoy your job? What do you like most about it? Some people say doing a job you enjoy isn’t really working and I think we’re lucky that that’s how we feel. Listening to families, helping them to realise the memorial they have in mind, showing it to them on paper and then to making it real for them is a real privilege. Your job is a mixture of technical detail and artistic intuition. Which of those two elements appeals most to you? The two often blend into one when you are trying to accommodate the customer’s wishes. Ultimately Steve likes the

Many memorial designs are now more colourful and intricate and there has been the increase over time of colour photo plaques on memorials. We are now able to supply many more options for families than ever before. What would you like to have written on your headstone? That I tried my best & cared - some would say I am very trying.

MUSIC

After a hugely successful Jazz Festival Grimsby Jazz gets ready to welcome .....

Janet Seidel

Australia’s First Lady Of Jazz H

SEPT

17

aving given us a dazzling Jazz Festival 2014 (we were lucky enough to get to see the wonderful Clare Teal and there’ll be a review and pictures in our web edition), Grimsby Jazz are following up with a show featuring another outstanding female vocalist. The fabulous Janet Seidel, regarded by many in Australia as the finest female jazz singer the country has produced, will be performing as part of the Janet Seidel Trio on Wednesday 17th September at the Old Clee Club. Reviewers have compared Janet favourably with artists including Peggy Lee, Doris Day, Julie London and Blossom Dearie, which gives you an idea of the breadth of the influences that she has absorbed to create her own unique laid back style. The trio uses the renowned Nat King Cole line up (piano/vocals, jazz guitar and double bass) and their extensive repertoire ranges from jazz standards, ballads to chansons - plus there’s always something in the mix to take the audience by surprise. The set list will certainly include many of the songs which feature on the trio’s new album Far Away Places, a collection of songs evoking the golden age of world travel and inspired by the title track, a 1940s hit song which speaks of yearning to be whisked away to another time and place. Janet and her Trio will also be performing a set at Grimsby Minster from 12.30pm - 1.30pm when they will be performing the songs of Doris Day. Tickets for the evening show are priced at £12 in advance or £14 on the door. Visit www.grimsbyjazz.com for more information on this and other great shows.

GARDENS

This summer add some colours to your borders with ....

Hydrangeas An English garden classic

Hydrangeas are among the most popular of garden shrubs, flowering in pink, white and blue and bringing an abundance in colour that has an old fashion charm and elegance which is why they have been selected as the HTA’s Plant Of The Month for August. There are two types of flowering hydrangeas: mopheads which have large round flowerheads resembling pompoms and lacecaps which bear round, flat flowerheads. Flowering right through until late summer, they are easy to care for and fully hardy, and can last many years. Over the winter, hydrangeas will lose

their leaves but being fully hardy will re-leaf the following year. Flower colour changes depending on soil condition. Hydrangeas should be planted in a moist area in full sun to partial shade. They bloom from summer to late autumn, when a large cone shaped hydrangea flowers, it commands a lot of attention. The variety of colours and the richness from white to the deepest purples are another glorious quality of this plant. Even when the flower is dying, the textures

of the tiny flowers and the large florets, means the colours carrying on burning. Musician, singer and keen gardener Katie Melua is a big fan of hydrangeas and told the HTA about her fondness for them. “The Hydrangea, even as a singular flower head, is majestic to me. I used a lot of hydrangeas at my September wedding and was able to keep and dry nearly all of them. They still fill the house with that richness and bring back the lovely memories of that day. They’re a very special plant. Every garden should have some.”
