In The Know Your indispensable guide to what’s going on where you live
Hooray For Hollywood! Forget your soggy bottoms and get your bake on as Britain’s favourite artisan baker comes to the Auditorium
O
nly a few years ago if you had suggested that the great British public would be glued to their TV screens every week to watch a competitive baking show nobody would have believed you. And if you’d gone further and suggested that Britain’s favourite baker would tour to packed houses with a one man show you’d probably have been laughed out of town. But of course it’s all true and that’s in no small part down to the skill and charisma of Paul Hollywood, who will be at the Auditorium on Thursday 20th November with his British Baking Live Tour. The show promises an evening of baking, comedy and fun as Paul demonstrates recipes and talks about some of his favourite regional baking. He will also reveal some of the secrets of being a top TV chef and take the audience on a culinary tour of the United Kingdom, showcasing some of the country’s best loved regional specialities.
NOV
20
Audience members will get a real insight into Paul’s life and career and he’ll talk about how his father persuaded him to ditch his path as a trained sculptor to join the family baking business and tell tales of his time as head baker at some of the world’s most exclusive hotels, all of which led to him becoming one of the country’s finest artisan bakers. Paul will demonstrate up to four of his favourite recipes and four lucky audience members will take part in one baking challenge live on stage. Should be a great night so if you’re a fan of the Bake
Off or even if you just like the smell of fresh bread we suggest you book early because tickets will, almost inevitably, go like hot cakes. Paul Hollywood is at Grimsby Auditorium on Thursday 20 November at 8pm. Tickets are £29.50 and can be booked in person at the Auditorium, by phone to 0844 8713016 or on the web by visiting www.atgtickets.com

bbey Walk Gallery will be filled with beautiful Raku ware and contemporary textile work this autumn when they host a major exhibition celebrating the lifelong friendship of sculptor Stuart Smith and textile artist Margaret Nash. Stuart Smith is an internationally renowned sculptor who received his formal training under the tutelage of James Butler RA at The City & Guilds London Art School and then at the Royal Academy School, Piccadilly. He draws inspiration from everyday situations and his intimate and imaginative sculptures are based on a close and affectionate observation of people going about their everyday lives. Margaret Nash is not only a creator but also a teacher and was for many years the embroidery designer for Marks & Spencer. In fact many of the designs which will be on display at the exhibition are kindly loaned by the Marks & Spencer archive collection based in Leeds. Margaret takes inspiration from natural and organic forms and makes use of stitched and appliquĂŠed textiles to create complex and subtle narratives of remembrance and connection. Abbey Walk Gallery is open from 9-5 Tues-Sat. For further information contact Gill or Elaine on 01472 241007 or email art@abbeywalkgallery.com

BLENDING THE OLD STANDARDS WITH SOME NEW CLASSICS
THE SHANNON REILLY TRIO WITH THOM WHITWORTH LUNCHTIME JAZZ WITH AT THE MINSTER
A
t Grimsby Minster the new lunchtime concert season is in full swing and we stopped in to catch local jazz super group The Shannon Reilly Trio (plus one) performing an outstanding set straight out of the great American songbook to an appreciative audience. In addition to Shannon herself, and regular trio members Pat McCarthy (guitar) and Warren Jolly (bass), the group
also boasted the exceptional trumpet playing of Lincoln’s Thom Whitworth and between them they produced enough cool sounds to gladden the heart of any music lover. Their set took in classics such as Bye Bye Blackbird, All Of Me and Summertime but it wasn’t all golden oldies and the highlight of the show was a terrific version of Imelda May’s 2009 hit Big Bad Handsome Man.

Remember Remember
Guy Fawkes was recently voted the 30th greatest Briton in history but what do we know about the man with the gunpowder?
S
ince being adopted as the face of protestors all over the world Guido Fawkes is cool again but although he tried to blow up Parliament he wasn’t really the anti-capitalist type. He wasn’t really called Guido either. He was christened plain old Guy but he changed his name because it sounded more Spanish and romantic. He was born in York and had a reputation for being “pleasant, cheerful and loyal to his friends”. To this day St. Peter’s School in York doesn’t celebrate bonfire night because they refuse to burn a former pupil. Although he’s the most famous plotter Guy Fawkes wasn’t the ringleader, that was Robert Catesby. His job was guarding the explosives underneath the Parliament and lighting the fuses. The thirty six barrels of powder were brought into the cellars in July 1605 but due to the outbreak of the Black Death the opening of Parliament was postponed until early November. Following the plotters’ betrayal Fawkes was discovered in the early hours of fifth, ready to trigger the blast which scientists calculate would have destroyed the whole palace and most of the buildings in a half mile radius. He was brought before the King and denounced him as a disease upon the country before being taken away to be tortured. He resisted for three days before giving up the conspirators and was executed in January 1606 at which time he wasn’t even considered to be in the top 100 greatest Britons. But times change and he’s there now so we’ll throw on an extra log in his honour as we burn him in effigy on the fifth. Have a good bonny night, stay safe and follow the firework code!

Tracey Edges: Girl About Town I am feeling that, ‘Girl About Town’ should be renamed ‘Girl Stuck In The House’. I’ve moved house. Now I don’t seem to be moving far, at all. I’ve managed to pull things around, set a few things up and I am living a very basic life which no longer includes an oven, a washing machine or a boiler. Three things that I have come to realise are the crux of easy living. Being fed, clean and warm have never been such a challenge and it is so time consuming, when you can’t just press a few buttons. I have to boil four kettles just to wash up! I am also getting to the point where I never want to see another chip – ever! Luckily, for me it is a temporary situation while I sort out enough space for someone to work in, but for many others it is a way of life, one for which I now have a lot more empathy, especially now the weather has turned. Brrrr...
For this month’s column, my forays ‘About Town’ will be looking back to a time when my life had a few more hours per day and also the great local people that I have had the pleasure of being involved with during my new adventure. Summertime, which now seems rather a way away, is for events in Peoples Park, Grimsby. Local events company The Culturehouse hosted a Family Fun Day which was a mix of local bands, craft stalls and street performers from far and wide – including dancing with shopping trolleys. Thankfully the weather was kind, the sun had its summer hat and sunglasses on and a thoroughly enjoyable day was had by all.

Between 9 and 11 am on Sundays I have my radio presenter hat on for the 2 hours of my Sunday Girl”show, for Siren FM 107.3. After that I hot footed it down to the park and put my stewards hat on. I wish it had been a real hat but, alas, I had to suffer the dreaded hi-vis. I really hate the things with a vengeance. I pulled a face and pulled it on, along with a demeanour akin to a Kevin or a Perry. That grump didn’t last long though as I had arrived to the great sound of Tom Tree. I do like jobs where I get to hear great music and get paid for it. Tom, along with Michael Freeman, Jazz White and Tom’s brother Josh Humphreys, is also in one of my favourite Grimsby bands, Kismet Ryding. Tom Tree is his solo project and he has a brilliant double album out called Seedlings And Saplings. Seedlings is all acoustic tracks and Saplings consists of the same tracks but played with a full band. It is a great idea as you can choose which mood suits your moment. I am beginning to think that I am allergic to Kismet Ryding as, after seeing them once, at The Yardbirds, I have managed to get a bug of some description every time I have planned to go and see them since. Maybe it’s The Yardbirds that is the problem. I looked forward to seeing Barb Wire Dolls (from Greece, based in LA, playing in Grimsby) for ages. It was a great line up with Ming City Rockers (based in Immingham) and Grimsby band The Corvids, but deadlines loomed and, although intending to go right up to the last, I didn’t make it. I sulked. If you went you got a great show, if you didn’t, you missed a great show. I’m still sulking. The Lead singer of Barb Wire Dolls is Isis Queen and puts her all into her performances. They tour extensively and have played hundreds of gigs. If you like a bit of Punk, check them out – they are the real deal. My favourite track is ‘World On Fire’ – I’m sure it was brilliant live.
Earlier this year Kismet Ryding went on a European tour and often play across the water, in Hull. If you get the chance to see them, grab it, they are extremely talented and always put on a wholehearted and energetic performance. Be warned though, Mike has Sandyshawitus (I don’t like feet, regardless of who they are on the end of). On the other hand, (I don’t mind hands) they also have a fabulous ep out and, at long last, an album is on the cards. The ep is called, LOOK.SEE.DON’T.TRIP and contains 6, equally weighted, tracks. For a local reference listen to The Most Famous Man (In Our Town). It comes in various formats and is available off their website. I have the 12” vinyl (I really need to get one of those record player thingys).
Keeping with music, that day also saw The Finest Hour and Sunny and BooBoo fill the bandstand with their diverse sounds. The Finest Hour have a mix of punk, rock and folk and Sunny and Boo-Boo seem to change with the wind as they explore different routes, exposing their talents to different genre. Matty Onn has recently completed an English Degree and their informed and intellectual lyrics reflect this with tracks such as James Joyce. Matty has just started up his own Music Production company called Marlin Music. Although based in New Waltham they have portable equipment so whatever you want and wherever you need recording and sound production services they can come to you. However, if you go to them they promise a professional, personal and affordable service but, far more importantly, tea, cake and a chilled atmosphere. So, if you are a band or a venue who need amplification at a gig, or an artist or band who want to lay down some tracks, get in touch. Marlin Music has the facility to record 8 simultaneous tracks at any location, from a village hall to a cathedral, using the latest Cubase software and then over-dub with as many tracks as required. To get a great service it is advisable to use someone who is talented on both sides of the mixing desk and truly understands both the needs of the artist and the technical requirements to get the best sound.
“The Creative Arts, whether musical, literary or artistic, fill and enrich our lives. Imagine a silent world with no pictures or text ....” All of the above bands have been featured as my Artist of the Week on Sunday Girl. We are so lucky to be surrounded by such talented musicians in this area and it is never hard to find someone playing somewhere. They need our support. To produce superb original music takes time and dedication and the financial rewards tend to be minimal. If you can buy a CD, or download a few tracks, please do. You may not be paying their mortgage off but every little does help and you will give a hardworking and talented person a much needed boost.
Above left - The Barb Wire Dolls Below left - Sarah de Carlo of The Corvids
The Creative Arts, whether musical, literary or artistic, fill and enrich our lives. We are surrounded by imagery and words and music but no one wants to pay for it anymore. Imagine a silent world with no pictures or text. Whether an advertising hoarding or a computer game, or magazine – all need creative input but even school syllabuses are downgrading the importance of creativity. If a musician cannot feed his art how can he produce a brilliant soundtrack for a film. We take such a lot for granted, so much that we don’t even see or hear it, until it is no longer there.
Just before I moved house, I enjoyed the company of Nottingham based, fine artist Ali Morgan-Tansley as my houseguest for a couple of weeks while she immersed herself in the sights and sounds of Grimsby and Cleethorpes. At the same time that all of the negativity hit with the publicity surrounding the upcoming film, Grimsby, starring Sacha Baron Cohen, it was really refreshing to see our area through a pair of fresh eyes who really appreciated all the good that this area does have to offer. Particularly, fascinated by Grimsby Docks and the Humber Forts, Ali immersed herself into her residency at Abbey Walk Gallery as part of the Lightlines Project with Grimsby artist Gill Hobson as project mentor. Lightlines utilizes digital technology and Ali, as an installation artist concentrated on projections onto installations. The resulting imagery and Ali’s thoughts about her two weeks in Grimsby can be found on her blog at: www.aleemorgan.wix.com/fineart. Above Ali Morgan-Tansley at Abbey Walk Above left Grimsby Dock Ali Morgan-Tansley Below left Lightlines Ali Morgan-Tansley
The second person awarded a Lightlines Residency was Abbey Walk Gallery Resident Artist, Dale Mackie. Dale is particularly renowned for his dock inspired paintings but he also creates abstract pieces and for this particular project he investigated a subject that resonates with him personally. Tinitus is a common problem where the sufferer has to live with a permanent ringing in the ears and Dale wished to explore this aural problem in a visual manner. Dale’s initial explorations involved an installation incorporating thousands of ear plugs and also paintings and projections of skulls and soundwaves. Dale’s varied work can be seen on his website: www.dalemackie.com
Back to my house trials and I have been overwhelmed by the kindness of people. I am terrible at accepting offers of help. I find it a lot easier to give than take but sometimes people are brilliant at wanting to help you make life a bit easier. A big thank you must go to Darren, a friend and takeaway delivery person who often pops in to share his perk-of-the-job-supper with me as well as relocating slugs that have a predilection to sharing my kitchen – they obviously haven’t heard that a microwave dictates the level of food on offer. He has also learnt that when I say “fancy looking around a d-i-y store?”, it usually translates as ‘I need to buy lots of really heavy things’. He seems to be washing his hair a lot nowadays! A great bonus of having a bit of a moan on social media is that serendipity can come into play. I posted that I had got a lot of bargain paving slabs (thanks, Darren – they were a bit of an exhausting mission to get!) and was about to kill my grass off to lay them. Another Abbey Walk resident artist, Vivienne May, saw my post and it turned out that she was doing the exact opposite to me. She has a massive garden that is just slabbed over and she was pulling some up to turf. She had slabs, I had turf and the go-between was introduced to me as Archybald Misfit, street performer, actor and, with his ‘Happy To Help’ company, Gardener. Happy To Help, is exactly that. A day’s worth of gardening or general handyman type services is provided at a basic cost. He also offers a no-job-is-too-small service. Between us, Vivienne and I are keeping Archy busy as I give Vivienne soil and lots of plants in exchange for extra paving slabs. I get rid of things I don’t want, without waste and get something in return that would cost me a lot of money. We are both happy and giving a local person some work as a bonus. As a street performer, Archy (aka Gary) is used to working outdoors in all weathers and has amazed me with his just-get-on-with-it tenacity even when the rain has been an utter deluge. Edith, his tiny dog, comes along and is a very happy, social little creature. Gary, wearing his other hat as Archybald Misfit is, with the other members of EarthBound Misfits, running a Misfits Community Circus, every Tuesday evening at St. Hughes Community Centre, Haycroft Street, Grimsby. 5-6pm is a family session, £3 per person, and adult participants are welcome, as long as they are accompanied by a child. Previous pages Lightlines Dale Mackie Opposite Grimsby Docks Dale Mackie
The 16+ session is at 7-8pm and costs £2 per person. All abilities and ages are welcome. So, if you fancy learning something a little different, such as riding a unicycle, walking on a tightrope or a walking globe, juggling or many of the other circus skills on offer, as well as having great fun at the same time, just Roll Up Roll Up!

I know Vivienne from when I was also a resident artist at the gallery and she still has the large ground floor studio where she works as both a visual multimedia artist and writer as well as being a complimentary therapist/tutor of Reiki, Ear Candling, EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique), Geopathic Stress Clearing and Muscle Testing. She says that both aspects of her work interact with each other through the use of colour. If interested in any of her artwork or therapies, contact Vivienne via the Gallery or email her on: viviennemay@hotmail.co.uk There is clear disabled access to the ground floor. I’m now going to escape the confines of my not-quite-des-res and go for a walk on the prom with my dogs. It is that time of the year when restrictions are lifted and we can, once again, feel the sand under our paws. Last time I went down there, someone on a massive unicycle shot past me, a cyclist had a skeleton t-shirt on, which in the dusk looked rather strange, people were participating in the outside gym, and doing Rocky impressions in the inside unit, and a boy-racer nearly lost his skirt on a speed bump (there’s a clue in the title there). There is always something to see in Cleethorpes – I wonder what it will be tonight. Bye for now Tracey

One of the world’s most celebrated brass bands comes to town
Black Dyke at Grimsby Central Hall There’s a treat in store for all fans of brass band music Saturday 15th November when the world famous Black Dyke Band bring their unique brand of brass magic to the Grimsby Central Hall. Black Dyke are one of the longest established bands in the country, having been formed in the West Yorkshire town of Queensbury in 1855 by John Foster, a french horn player and mill owner. The band was always closely associated with its local community and most of its players worked at the mill. In 1904 they became one of the first bands to make a recording and two years later they toured the USA, playing over 200 concerts on a 13,000 mile itinerary! Since then they have played all over the world, on every continent, and consistently delighted audiences with their performances. Over the years they have made more than 350 recordings, playing alongside such luminaries as Sir
Edward Heath, Sir Paul McCartney, Peter Gabriel and renowned percussionist Evelyn Glennie. They even made an appearance on The Beatles’ Yellow Submarine album! They have an outstanding record on the competitive band scene having won the National Brass Band Championships on twenty two occasions, the British Open on twenty nine and the European Championship twelve times. Conducted by Dr. Nicholas Childs the band promise to perform a varied programme including old favourites and a few surprises and you can be certain of a fantastic night of music, Black Dyke style.

OCTOBER IS HARVEST TIME SO COME AND JOIN IN THE
OCT
18
APPLE DAY HARVEST CELEBRATIONS
10am - 3pm at The Vanson Centre, Bradley Rd
WITH GREEN FUTURES OF BRADLEY
T
he first two weeks of October are traditionally apple harvest weeks, when orchards echo with the sound of happy pickers gathering in basket loads of the pomaceous beauties, so it’s a good time of year to stop and think just how essential to our cultural identity the humble apple really is. Although they originate in Asia apples have been a staple crop for European farmers for thousands of years and they’re not just a big part of our diet and cuisine they also crop up all over the place in art and literature, from the golden apples of the Hesperides to the Garden of Eden and from the abduction of Ion (you’ll have to look that one up same as we did) to the story of Snow White, the apple has always had a cherished spot at the centre of our iconography. And that’s without mentioning William Tell, pies and cider.
IN THE KNOW Now here at The Peoples we don’t know much about Adam and Eve but we’ve been thrown out of a few garden parties so when we heard about Apple Harvest Day festivities, organised by Green Futures and talking place this Saturday 18th October at The Vanson Centre in Bradley, we thought we’d go down in advance and have a look around and see what’s afoot. Situated in the former council nursery premises on Bradley Road (directly opposite the entrance to the pitches and use the left hand of the two gates) Green Futures is a community enterprise based on the principles of sustainable agriculture. They have four large poly tunnels, several netted fruit pens, an allotment area and a large orchard, plus commercial flower growing areas, a hydroponic nursery and a thriving business in plants and hanging baskets. They grow high quality produce which they sell on the premises or can deliver to your door in the form of a weekly vegetable box. Having been founded four years ago and taken over a completely derelict site Green Futures now employs eleven people and enjoys the assistance of more than fifty volunteers a week, who come from organisations such as the YMCA, the Linkage Trust and from local colleges. IMMINGHAM
One Voice
Working to make Immingham a nicer place to live
T
hey say that the greatest resource of any community is its people and in that case Immingham has a head start in the form of the One Voice Community Engagement Group. One Voice works to promote the regeneration of Immingham, Habrough and Stallingborough by bringing residents together with a wide range of service providers including local authorities, police, industry and schools, and they really know how to make things happen. Thanks to generous financial assistance from ABP and the hard work of their volunteers they’ve been responsible for organising events like the I-Fest, the Christmas Game Show night and the Community Cinema and they also raise and distribute money for local organisations including In Bloom, the
Air and Sea Cadets and the Wasps rugby club. One Voice were responsible for organising the funding to keep the town’s Rock School project running for another two years, giving more than forty young people the chance to learn to play a musical instrument and in fact Rock School is such a success story its members were invited to The Savoy Hotel in London for an
award ceremony at which they were introduced to Simon Cowell. One Voice have got much more going on than we’ve got space to write about so we’ll keep up to date with them in future issues and meanwhile if you’re an Immingham resident who’d like to get involved with the community or a member of a local organisation in need of funds then they’d love to hear from you!
You can find One Voice on onevoicecommunity.com and on Facebook and Twitter. Contact them via email to chair@onevoicecommunity.com or by phone at 0751 3612964

MUSIC
THE LUNCHTIME CONCERT SERIES
THE PETHER STRING TRIO AT THE MINSTER
O
ver the past few months we’ve enjoyed some superb music at the Minster, ranging from classical tromboning to cool jazz and from klesmer to urban soul - and there’s no doubt that there’s something about the combination of fine musicianship and the spirituality of the Minster architecture that can make music of all kinds sound extra special. This was confirmed for us again by the visit this week (Wednesday 15th October) of Edward Pether (violin), Alex Mitchell (viola) and Richard Isaac (cello), known collectively as the Pether String Trio who performed a captivating set featuring works by Schubert and Beethoven which had the audience spellbound. You need a proper classical music reviewer to explain just how good they were and that’s not me so suffice it to say that I’ve seldom seen an audience so enthralled. The next lunchtime recital is on Wednesday 22nd October and will feature Australian pianist Jeremy So. The cafe will open 11.30am to 2pm, recital 12.30pm to 1.30pm. Tickets are £3 on the door.

MAKE THE MOST OF THE AVENUE! There’s more to St Peter’s than you think
F
or the people of Cleethorpes St Peter’s Avenue is more than just a shopping street, it’s the heart of the community, a social hub, an area for entertainment, a venue for parades, celebration and street parties. But of course it’s as a retail centre that the avenue is most famous and it has been said that if you can’t buy it on St Peter’s or one of the streets nearby then you probably don’t need it or want it. But while many of our favourite shops, like John Turner’s the butchers (and sausage experts) and Sweet Indulgence, the classic confectionary specialists, are at the high end of the street it’s important to remember that there’s a lot more to the Avenue than the market end. Just take a stroll a little further down and there are many more excellent specialist retailers like Cleethorpes Bed Shop, experts in the art of the good night’s sleep, Wood’s Cycles, A&D Curtains for all kinds of high quality domestic fabrics and just round the corner in Cambridge Road there’s A Good Yarn, not just a wool shop but also a place where enthusiasts gather to plan and research their projects and to give and receive advice and tuition. So next time you’re in The Avenue why not venture past the church and see what the grand old thoroughfare has to offer - you’ll be glad you did!

F
or all it’s imposing architecture St Peter’s Church, Cleethorpes is a relative newcomer compared to some churches in the area, having been built in the 1860s at the instigation of Reverend William Price Jones at a time when the small seaside town was pretty much a Methodist stronghold. Ever since that time however the church has been at the centre of the community and as the town has grown and The Avenue and the neighbouring streets have become popular shopping destinations so the Church has expanded it’s role in the community by organising and hosting a wide range of arts and cultural events. The popular lunchtime concerts have now drawn to a close for this season at least but there’s still a lot going on at the church through the autumn including the North Lincs Art Society Annual Exhibition and The Grimsby Family History Society’s World War I Centenary Commemoration Exhibition.

INTERVIEW
To Earthwood Gray talks to poet And Beyond Josie & author Sime Naylor
S
ime Naylor is well known around town as the front man of Merlin’s Keep, as a poet and as a bare kneed the postie with a social conscious. He’s had a busy autumn, producing two new children’s books in the popular Earthwood Series and a also a new volume of poetry, The Waymark. I caught up with him after his daily round to delve further into the wonderful world of the Earthwood stories, for which Simon writes the stories and his friend and illustrator Tim Michael provides the drawings and I started by asking how they came to collaborate.
INTERVIEW

Facing page - Sime Naylor (right) with artist illustrator Tim Michael Right: One of Tim’s illustrations from Earthwood
‘Tim and I met about 5 years ago when we were both at a local festival. I was aware of Tim’s cartoons and he was aware of my music and we got chatting. When I saw some of his new characters, Red the Squirrel in particular, I thought of some stories I had written for my kids years before.’ So Earthwood was born and the pair set about creating a series of stories set in a magical woodland. ‘I’ve always loved the outdoors, especially woodland. The woods and trees have a real pull, something ancient, something hidden and magical, but at the same time something familiar and comforting,’ explained Simon when I asked him to tell me why he had chosen a woodland setting for his world. ‘Woodland has been the friend of the human race since time immemorial, providing food, fuel and shelter, but also creating legend and myth. I guess I wanted to tap into that somehow, and hopefully bring some of the wonder of the woodland to children.’ The books tell the stories and adventures of animals, trees and the environment but they also have a more human dimension. ‘Essentially they’re stories about friendship, about working together, and working with the world around us rather than exploiting it.’ The two new volumes in the series continue these themes. The Scarecrow And The Crow’s Nest deals with fear and looks at how everyone, even if they seem strange, has something positive to offer. Belinda And The Bee’s Nest takes a gentle look at greed and desire and at how we only need take a little of what the world has to offer. We soon got to talking about poetry, Simon’s love of nature and how he tries to capture that in his verse.
The new work is a further exploration of landscape and follows on from his previous two collections. ‘This time I wanted to catch a particular moment in time, with all the associated sensations. Poetry is a very solitary thing for me, a way of distilling and discussing the emotion and inspiration that comes from walking the Lincolnshire Wolds, a landscape that I feel very rooted to.’ Simon explained that he sees his song and story writing as a direct way of connecting with an audience whereas for him poetry is more personal. ‘I reflect upon and record the living landscape that is such a source of imaginative inspiration and spiritual sustenance for me. It’s no surprise therefore, that I admire nature poets. Wordsworth is an obvious inspiration, as is the poetry (rather than prose) of Thomas Hardy.’ Simon finds that the work of other poets inspires him to keep writing and to look to improve all the time. He is never unprepared for inspiration to strike him. ‘I carry a notebook when walking, and sometimes a whole poem or song will flood out. Sometimes it’s only a line and it’ll sit and gestate in that book until the time is right. I do tend to write very quickly, I have this need to get the thing finished pretty much straight away – then I tend to leave it alone and come back and chip away until if finds a form I’m happy with.’
“Essentially they’re stories about working with the world around us rather than exploiting it.”
Simon’s books are available from Waterstones and Amazon or directly from the author at Moonfruit Books 36 Manor Ave DN32 0QR. Poetry £3, Earthwood £3.50

unday night in Grimsby. What more suitable time and place could there be for a meeting with one of the leading exponents of British hip hop, and with the audience pretty well pumped up by supports DJ Delta Heavy, the Auditorium is already filled with more energy than it’s seen in a long time. And that’s before the main attraction has even started his set!

As Example runs onto the stage, every arm in the crowd lifts, everyone screams, every phone is set to record. He opens with the stomping Stay Awake from his chart topping, platinum selling 2011 album Playing With Shadows and the crowd roars with excitement. Segueing into the next song with a guitar solo, the supporting band members give it the whole pop-punk jump thing, creating an exhilarating visual performance. It’s nice to see that they don’t just really on the light show. Although that in itself is enough to keep everyone happy! With the new album having been released back in July this year, the adoring fans have had plenty of time to learn every lyric in his newest songs, which take a large part of the set. He teases the audience about Monday morning hangovers and thanks the crows for coming out when it’s a schoolday in the morning. Later in the set he also takes the time to dedicate a song. “I’m gonna dedicate this one to a little guy over there,” he says, pointing into the audience “he’s called Lucas, it’s his birthday, he’s 14.” And he bursts into Kids Again, another new one. He finishes rather abruptly but it takes no encouragement to get him back on stage again to end on the classics. We’ll Be Coming Back, Kickstarts, Natural Disaster and finally, Kiss Me fill his encore with massive energy and the night goes off with a bang. He certainly saved the best til last.

LEARNING
STUCK FOR WHAT TO GET THE KIDS THIS CHRISTMAS?
Why not try a Raspberry Pi? So what’s a Raspberry Pi we hear you ask. And why do we and our children need one? And the answer is that in terms of getting kids ready for the modern world this is probably the most important thing you can buy. It’s a programmable computer, about the size of a credit card, that plugs into a TV and a keyboard and which kids can use to learn proper computer programming, not just learning to use software packages. You can programme it to play games, perform tasks, attach it to a camera or a robot - the only limit is the ingenuity of the
Kids love dinosaurs and it’s amazing how quickly they memorise all those big complicated names. Sometimes we underestimate just how important that can be, but learning to learn and learning for fun are the two most important skills a child can acquire. Most subjects at school are easier for a child who has learned to learn and it doesn’t matter whether it’s dinosaurs or butterflies or cars or Pokemon characters the trick is the same.
user and the fact that it has to be programmed in code to do what you want it to. You’re probably thinking “And I bet it costs an arm and a leg these kind of things always do.” Well actually no. There are two models, costing $25 or $35 plus local taxes and shipping/handling fees (they keep the price in dollars to minimise exchange rate volatility), you’ll need a power lead and an SD card and you’re away. It’s got to be the best bargain of the year, the kids will love it and they’ll be learning the essential skills for working with computers. Raspberry Pi all round then.
LEARNING WITH DINOSAURS
One of the nice things about dinosaurs however is that as well as helping kids to memorise, they can also help with building a vocabulary. Take the simple word dinosaur for example. Once kids have learned that it means “terrible lizard” they’ll start to see a pattern. “Saur” or “saurus” is always lizard so if you take a dinosaur like a stegosaurus you just need to know that “steg” means covered and you have a covered lizard - it refers to the stegosaur’s covering of plates. How’s that useful? Well if kids also know that “gram” often means writing then when they meet the word stegogram for the first time they’ll probably guess that it means covered writing. (It’s a posh word for a hidden message, like with invisible ink - not a code or cipher.) That’s one example but there are lots more - so next issue we’ll have a look at some more useful words that we could learn from the dinosaurs.

Winter Warmth
and summer style
We know how it is. You’ve spent the last few months getting your home just the way you want it. And then what happens? Winter. Who saw that coming? When winter arrives you just want to be in front of the fire snug as a bug in a rug but when there’s a knock at the door and unexpected visitors arrive you don’t want to have a big old rug full of bugs in a pile on the sofa for them to admire. You want winter warmth and to still have the stylish home you spent all summer getting just so. Well now you can.

“no need to freeze for the sake of style - a few small changes can make your home cosy and chic”
f course the first thing you’ll need to think about is your domestic heating. Whatever your preferred fuel now’s the time to get the system serviced and inspected, or to have your chimney swept if you favour an open fire. Make sure you use a qualified engineer if there’s gas involved. There are lots on these pages who we’re happy to recommend, and if you’re in the mood for a change you might want to think about a super stylish modern solid fuel burning stove from the new showroom above Inspirations on Cleethorpes High Street. Next step - rugs! The modern fashion for laminate floors and tiles is great for looking stylish and keeping clean but it’s awfully cold underfoot and it does nothing to insulate your rooms. Get a big rug to cover the middle and then loads of small ones for the sides of the bed, the conservatory, even the bathroom. Rugs don’t just keep your warm either,
they’re also a way of bringing some cheerful colour into the home, which can make the place feel warm without burning any extra fuel. Go for reds and oranges, deep golds and earthy browns to give your home that snug and cosy feeling. And then we turn to curtains. There’s nothing more important than for shutting off drafts for keeping a room warm and they can change the look and feel of a room at a stroke. Try our friends at A&D Curtains in St Peter’s Avenue if you’re in need of inspiration, plus of course they can help you out with all those little extra finishing touches that really pull a room together and make it feel extra special. All of which means that even when the north wind doth blow with a little bit of thought and planning your home can be as warm as toast and still look like a page from a magazine. That’s lovely. Now just excuse me while I butter this crumpet.

Jazz Prom at the minster
T
he Grimsby Jazz Prom at The Minster on Saturday 18th October, proved a resounding success as a packed audience watched and listened to an afternoon of quality music. During the interval they were able to enjoy a High Tea of equally high quality sandwiches and cakes, served by a courageous band of volunteer helpers! The funky New York Brass Band began the afternoon in St James Square entertaining a large crowd, before leading them into the Minster. The New Orleans inspired Brass Band is a powerhouse seven piece with a line up of percussion, sax, trumpets, trombones and sousaphone. They played typical New Orleans street music, but have a repertoire that ranges from Marvin Gaye
to George Michael to Tom Jones, with some funky, gritty northern originals thrown in for good measure. This set the mood for a great afternoon of music. They were followed by Steel The Rhythm, a fifteen piece steel band run by MAPAS and led by Lisa Oliver who performed amazing new music written by guitarist Pat McCarthy. Pat also played with the group. The finale was the fantastic Gypsy Jazz six piece Ultraswing, with accordion, violin, vocals, two guitars and bass. Their repertoire draws tunes from the great Django Reinhardt, French chanson and the current continental players of jazz manouche. Words by Jazz Prom organiser Gill Wilde of Grimsby Jazz

Back On Top! The classic roof is fashionable again
Traditional Clay Tiles Stylish and sustainable and coming to a home near you!
Fashions change, in the building industry as much as anywhere else, and not always for the better, so it’s nice to see that old fashioned English clay tiles have been making a comeback over the past few years, both on new builds and in the renovation sector. Clay tiles have been around a long time – the first people to use them in Britain were the Romans – but they’d been around a while even then. Although many areas of the UK have always used local slate and stone for most of their roofing, in most of the country

HOME STYLE clay was the material of choice, with the great tile making centres of Staffordshire and the West Midlands dominating the tile making industry. Clay’s supremacy lasted until the post war housing boom of the late 1940s when price and demand factors meant that concrete began to predominate. Nowadays most tiles are still concrete but clay is back in vogue because it’s environmentally sustainable, it’s durable (clay tiles should last 60 years but can last over a hundred), and because there’s a vast range of natural shades and textures to choose from so it looks great on any property in any style. Proper clay tiles do not need to be coloured artificially with dyes - the colour varies according to subtle variations in the manufacturing process, and of course they change colour as they age, acquiring rich and mellow patinations and shadings. It’s not just on roofs that the clay tile is coming into it’s own either. Increasingly architects are finding that they’re fantastic for covering vertical surfaces such as walls and gable ends. So if you’re thinking about a new roof take a good look at traditional clay - it may be right up your street.

LUNCHTIME PIANO RECITAL
JEREMY SO DAZZLES AT THE MINSTER
A
n appreciative audience at the Minster (including my dad in a noisy coat) enjoyed an exceptional performance at the piano from Jeremy So of the Royal Northern College of Music on Wednesday. The programme commenced with Piano Sonata No 23 in F minor Op 57 better known as ‘Appassionata’, usually regarded as one of the composers more technically demanding piano pieces, full of complex patterns and swirling descents and continued with Janacek’s tone poem ‘In The Mists’ a piece notable for its sudden changes of mood and direction, sometimes
melancholy, sometimes assertive, but unremittingly intense throughout. It’s the kind of piece that one imagines must take a lot out of the performer and you could forgive anybody for choosing a lightweight finale after two such demanding works but Jeremy So is made of sterner stuff and chose to round things off with four of Georgy Ligeti’s Etudes for Piano, including some pieces of such breathtaking polyrhythmic complexity (Etude No 1 in particular) that it was almost impossible sometimes to comprehend just what the music was doing as the left and right hands moved gradually out of phase with each other before
being drawn back together towards the finale. And afterwards Jeremy was nice enough to explain to me what I’d just heard and I’m not going to explain it here because I’m not sure I can. In short, another fantastic lunchtime of music at The Minster and to follow up this Wednesday (October 29th) we have local Celtic folk heroes Merlin’s Keep to look forward to. Pumpkins at the ready people because it’s
Jack
o’Lantern Time
A
utumn’s here and that means the shops will soon have huge piles of bright orange pumpkins for carving into lanterns because Hallowe’en is on the way. Tradition has it that the carving of veggy lanterns began with turnip lamps in mediaeval Ireland celebrating the festival of Samhain, marking the end of the harvest and the start of winter. The original Jack o’Lantern, was a farmer called Stingy Jack who outwitted the devil and was given a glowing coal from Hell as a reward. From then on he could often be seen walking through the world at night with it and in fact the name Jack o’Lantern is an alternative to Will o’the Wisp, the strange and unexplained lights which are sometimes seen flickering over marshland.
“
Don’t just scoop it out and chuck it away! Experiment a little and find out just how delicious pumpkin can be. As the celebration of Samhain died out and All Saint’s Day took its place in the calendar so the tradition migrated from the pagan festival to its Christian replacement but pumpkins didn’t get involved until the 1800’s when they began to be used in America. Pumpkins are edible squashes and in their native country they’re a delicacy but this side of the Atlantic we’ve never been quite sure about them. When you’ve carved it just what are you supposed to do with all that orange flesh? Bag it up and chuck it away? In fact there are lots of ways to cook and serve pumpkin and it’s delicious. You could try grating it and using it in place of carrot in your favourite carrot cake recipe, or you could boil it until it’s soft (say about fifteen minutes) and mash it with sugar, cream and spices to make a classic filling for a pumpkin pie (which is really a pumpkin tart). If savoury is more your thing then just use it in any way that you would use its near relative the butternut squash. It makes a great curry or you can stew it with onions, cream, chicken stock and a little sherry and then blitz for a delicious soup. Whatever you choose to do with it it’s too good to waste. So have fun this Hallowe’en and then get the pots and pans busy and discover for yourself just how delicious pumpkin can be!

Don’t Get Caught Out Get Your Vehicle Ready Early For The Winter
motoring running smoothly, starting with making sure your battery is in good order. Battery failure is the most common cause of winter breakdowns so check the terminals are clean and if it’s due for replacement (most batteries have a life span of between two and four years) now’s the time to do it. Top up the anti freeze and make sure your coolant level is correct. This is one of the most cost effective
W
ell we’ve all enjoyed an unusually mild autumn, (and many of us will be enjoying the company of some impressively large domestic spiders as a result), but there’s no getting away from it, winter is just around the corner and that means tough times for our vehicles. Winter is the season with the highest number of breakdowns and the greatest number of hours lost to traffic hold ups - because even if you drive carefully and avoid accidents there’s nothing you can do about the other idiots. What you can do is make sure that you don’t get caught by surprise by the bad weather. A little bit of forward planning will go a long way when the snow starts and however bad the weather gets you should be able to avoid the worst consequences. First things first make sure your car is in good order and

precautions you’ll ever take - repairing the damage from a frozen engine can be an expensive job. Clean that screen because when the low winter sun comes beaming in it can magnify every small smear so that your screen becomes almost opaque. Give it a really good clean and then add some high quality screen wash to the reservoir. This will not only help keep the glass clean but will help to prevent it freezing on the screen. If your wiper blades are worn get them replaced. Door locks and seals can suffer in the cold but giving the rubber seals on the doors a wipe with some vaseline will help to prevent door freezing and a squirt of WD40 will keep locks from freezing.
91
Check your tyres for damage and ensure that the pressure is correct and that they have at least 3mm of tread depth and be fully inflated. If you live in a rural area consider purchasing chains or snow socks. Ensure your lights are clean and working so that you can see and be seen on those dark commutes. It’s a good idea to carry a spare set of bulbs. Carry basic emergency equipment such as a first aid kit, a shovel, warm clothes and a blanket, a torch and batteries and always have extra fuel in the tank in case of delays of detours. A piece of carpet is useful in case you get stuck in snow and your wheels spin. For extra peace of mind get a mechanic you trust to help you. If you don’t have a regular garage then there are some good ones on these pages to choose from so safe motoring from us and have a good winter!

MOTORING
Texting while driving There’s a reason why it’s illegal. If you’re paying attention to your phone you’re not paying attention to your driving. It’s stupid and it’s dangerous and it really gets us mad.
Tailgating
Failure to indicate
It’s bad manners, it’s intimidating and if the car in front has to break suddenly there’s going to be a shunt and the rear car is going to be considered to be at fault. Most handbooks recommend leaving a minimum two second gap to the vehicle in front.
It sometimes seems like indicating has gone out of fashion especially at roundabouts! What do they teach them nowadays? Nothing like it for getting experienced drivers hot under the collar.
Switching lanes in a traffic jam
Dangerous overtaking They come tearing up behind you, launch themselves into a multiple overtake and then they have to lurch back in relying on you to brake for them.
There they go, weaving in and out of the traffic like it was the super giant slalom. Do they really think it gets them to there any quicker? Utterly baffling.
Hesitation
Undercutting
It’s no bad thing being cautious but some people don’t ever seem to be able to make their minds up. It’s often people on L and P plates and it’s counterproductive to just start hitting your horn because that won’t help. Patience.
In most circumstances it’s illegal but that doesn’t seem to stop the people in a hurry from gliding through on the inside.
Running the lights
Sudden braking
Some people just seem determined to ride their luck. Ultimately the time will come when it goers pear shaped but until then they honestly think they’re good drivers! Scary.
Especially at traffic lights. I don’t know which are worse. The ones who think amber means speed up to get across (see left) or the ones who think it means slam your anchors on without warning.
Road Rage
Being dopey The dustbin category - for everyone else who annoys us. Like people so busy listening to the radio that they don’t notice the lights turning green. Oh yeah, that would be me. Sorry all.
What winds you up behind the wheel? It doesn’t seem that long ago that nobody had ever heard of road rage. Nowadays it seems like it’s in the papers every day - just another fact of modern life. Maybe it’s because people lead more stressful lives, maybe the traffic is worse, maybe it all has to do with what we teach our kids. If they learn from an early age that anger is an acceptable response to life’s little
annoyances then it’s no surprise that they carry that through into adult life. Road rage is not a crime in itself but if it spills over into violence then it may give rise to charges of assault or battery or worse. So what do you find stressful? We asked around and here is our list of the top ten things that wind you up behind the wheel.

GARDENS
brighten up those borders
say hello to the new heucheras for a blaze of autumn colour
N
ot so very long ago the idea of being a fan of Heucheras would have been a bit odd. Everyone knew them, every garden had a few but they were nobody’s favourite. They were just rather dull plants that served their purpose by filling a gap in the border. Times change however and plant breeders have transformed the Heucheras (sometimes called Coral Bells) into something of a star turn. New and exciting cultivars of this plant have come on the market in recent years with ever more vibrant leaf colour, from butterscotch yellows, oranges and lime greens, through to purples, reds and browns.
They are most effective when planted en masse in a border but also can also be used in a planter to bring vibrancy and texture to the garden and they can be grown in baskets and containers for placing on the patio at any time of the year. Many varieties of Heucheras are almost evergreen and are versatile in both sun and shade and they almost look after themselves making them ideal for the novice gardener. All in all the new Heucheras are delightful plants for brightening up any part of the garden. They can be grown in full sun or partial shade in soil that has had well rotted manure or compost added prior to planting and as an added bonus, unlike other leafy plants, Heucheras don’t suffer from slug and snail damage. So happy gardening and next time you’re at the garden centre don’t forget to give the Heucheras a look and let’s brighten those borders!
