giving the gift of hope

GARDEN AID Age Care And Development is a local charity which has, over a period of years, built strong links with the Kyenjojo District of eastern Uganda, and especially with the hospital community of Mukunyu. The village provides shelter and care for those who are too old, (or too young) to work in the local tea plantations. Life in Mukunyu can be hard. Finding food, shelter and clothing is a constant struggle. The diet of the locals is mostly posho which is a maize flour. Bread, meat or green vegetables are luxuries reserved for holidays and the nearest clean water supply is two miles away. Even the most basic medicines like paracetemol are beyond the reach of the meagre resources of most people in the community and an education is all but impossible for children who do not have the money to pay school fees.

“a big thankyou to everyone who has helped us raise money for Mukunyu. It makes a real difference to people’s lives” Mark Howarth Garden Aid

Garden Aid: Caring For Two Communities

From time to time we like to bring our readers an update on one of our favourite local charities - Age Care and Development - which does so much to assist the disadvantaged in Western Uganda. ACAD is the brainchild of our good friend Mark Howarth of Garden Aid who donates 10% of his profit to funding projects aimed at helping a community of elderly adults and children, mostly survivors of civil war and HIV epidemics in Mukunyu Province. At present Mark and Age Care Development are working to raise £10,000 for the building of a much needed hospital, workshop facility and residential centre. Some progress has been made on the building but there is still much to be done. In the meantime an outbreak of typhoid and dysentery has lead to several deaths among the local population who were simply unable to afford the bottled drinking water that they were advised to drink. In large parts of the world dirty drinking water is one of the commonest causes of death and illness and the establishment of new clean wells is high on the list of ACAD’s priorities. They are also seeking to raise money to pay the school fees for many of the local

children to enable them to get the education which will help to raise them out of hardship. If you’d like to help Mark make life better for the residents of Mukunyu he’d love to hear from you. You can contact him by telephone on 07742 638423 and he’ll be happy to receive donations of money or goods that can be sold to raise funds.

NE LINCS CYCLE CHALLENG

iding a bike is good for your mind, your body, the environment and your community and if each of us could encourage a friend or two to ride, we could get loads more people riding bikes across the UK. So if you're a cyclist, or if you'd like to be, then this September’s NE Lincs Cycle Challenge is right up your cycle path!

NE LINCS lovetoride.net/nelin CYCLE CHALLENGE

The Challenge runs throughout September and is open to everyone - whether they're a top local club rider or an absolute beginner. It's part of the National Cycle Challenge - a fun, free competition to encourage you and your workplace colleagues to experience first hand the joys and benefits of riding a bike. There are prizes too - what more could you ask? Last year's event saw 19,000 people – including 3,700 new riders – from 1,700 organisations logging 150,000 trips and riding 1.7 million miles! It’s a team building exercise that helps individuals and organisations experience the health, social, financial and environmental benefits – and the sheer joy – of cycling. The Challenge is not a race - it's all about participation. Of course, if you log more miles and more trips you'll earn more points (and have a shot at some special individual prizes), but the fastest way to earn more points is to encourage more people to get on a bike and ride! This year participants are encouraged to record their rides with a free app called Moves which will provide useful data for Love to Ride to share with local partners to help them plan better cycling infrastructure and make cycling safer and more enjoyable for everyone. There's still time to get involved and we'll be following the progress of the teams and reporting on the results in our next issue. To find out more about the NE Lincs Cycle Challenge and register, visit them at www.lovetoride.net/nelincs and get those pedals turning!

We’ve pointed out before that Grimsby Sewing and Knitting is one of those TARDIS-like shops that seem to be bigger inside than out – well now it’s even more true because proprietors Paul and Linda Haynes have expanded their empire to include the shop next door – giving them four shop widths of space to fill with top quality haberdashery. The new shop is to be exclusively devoted to wool but they’ll still be stocking essential supplies for needlecrafts of all kinds with machines by Brother and Janome alongside a rainbow selection of threads, needles and all you’ll ever need to finish your perfect project. They’re always happy to give advice, so if you’re new to the world of woolcraft just drop in one day for a chat and they’ll sort you out with all you need to get started on a project that’s affordable and achievable too!

MUSIC

17

Jess Glynne at Market Rasen Racecourse

I

t’s not often that big names from the music scene visit us up here in northern Lincolnshire, we just don’t have venues with the capacity to make it viable, but with the arrival of the pop up arena things seems to be changing. The legendary Sir Tom Jones played Market Rasen Racecourse last year, Sir Elton rocked the Lincolnshire Showground in June and on Saturday night (August 13th 2016) Rasen played host to dance soul diva Jess Glynne, who drew the biggest crowd that the Racecourse has seen in over sixty years. Unlike some of her contemporaries on the R&B circuit Glynne has the ability to bring her songs home live sounding pretty much like they sound in the studio without the need for an MC cheerleading behind her and with the blend of fragility and power which is her trademark undiminished. Tonight she gave an assured and energetic performance, despite occasional moth attacks and a streamer blowback that left the proscenium looking like it had been the victim of an attack by a cross between the Andrex puppy and a brontosaurus. From the opening bars of her 2015 number one Don’t Be So Hard On Yourself, which she followed with Rather Be, the Clean Bandit hit that gave her breakthrough, the audience were dancing and singing along and they pretty much didn’t stop until the she rounded off with Right Here and Hold My Hand. With a lively and highly competent nine piece band, including three horns who combined to give plenty of depth to the sound, she played a hit packed set but also found time for covers of Amy Winehouse’s Tears Dry On Their Own and Prince’s I Feel For You which gave her the chance to show just what an excellent and versatile talent she possesses. She also found plenty of time for interaction with the crowd, keeping their energy levels as high as her own and ensuring that the better part of twenty thousand people were taken home tired and very happy indeed.

Art at the Minster: with Robert Koenig

T

hose of you who were paying attention may well remember that a couple of months ago we were singing the praises of the amazing Deities At The Bottom Of The Garden exhibition at the Grimsby Minster, which featured the artist Richard Bartle’s 12 miniature sheds, each with a beautifully hand crafted religious interior. Now there’s a new exhibition in the Art At The Minster season to look forward to – and this time it’s Memorial Structure’ by the artist Robert Koenig which runs from September 14th to October 19th. Koenig has been carving wooden artworks for over 35 years and much of his work is influenced by his Polish family history and that county’s strong tradition of working with wood. Memorial Structure is a major new piece of work and a specially constructed space containing artworks developed by the artist spanning subjects and techniques covered throughout his career including The White Fisherman which has been specially commissioned for the exhibition at Grimsby. There’s also a face carving workshop with Robert on Thursday 15th and Friday 16th September and a one day workshop on Saturday 17th. For information on the exhibition and workshops go to www.ourbigpicture.co.uk

SPOTLIGHT ON SCARTHO

Scartho Community Library

W

hen Scartho Library closed its doors in December 2014 as a result of government cuts the community lost an important resource so it was great news when a few months later the building reopened as the Scartho Community Library. Since then, with the help of an army of willing volunteers and as part of the Foresight organisation, the library has gone from strength to strength, providing not just access to books but becoming a vital hub for the local community.

Brown’s Family Butchers Brown’s Family Butchers was established in 2013 by Graham and Karen Brown and in just over three years they’ve gained a formidable reputation for quality and value, winning gold at The Lincolnshire Poacher Awards for their gluten free Pork, Apple and Cider Sausages as well as nine silver medals and four bronze. There’s always a wide range of top quality fresh meat available plus a selection of speciality sausages and a deli counter filled with the finest cheese, chutney and cooked meats. They have great offers too, so with summer well under way make it Brown’s for your meat and have a fantastic barbecue season!

Departing from the traditional model may have been a bit of a risk at first. After all libraries have traditionally been places where you went to be quiet and talk in whispers not to drink coffee and have a natter with your friends but it has been a risk that has paid off handsomely.

BRING IN THIS ADVERT FOR 10% OFF INSTORE

According to Foresight older persons' services co-ordinator and library manager Lynne Smith, "We are still a library but we host other activities as well. My ambition is to have a place where people can connect and be able to come and make friends and feel there is somewhere for them to go." Regular activities range from prize bingo and mah jong to yoga and knitting and there are lots of different exercise options, offering a range of activities with something to suit

everyone. There are also lots of special events including art sessions, local history talks and projects and even soap making and several local businesses including Feet Up Foot Massage and Beautiful Soul Gel Nails operate regular sessions on the premises. One of the most exciting projects that the Library has in the pipeline is their teaming up with local arts collective Creative Start (above) to create a mural for the back wall of the library building. They already have a fine reputation for mural creation (see right) and you can rest assured that we’ll be heading up to Scartho for the grand unveiling!

Coffee Shop NOW STOCKING YORVALE FARM MADE ICE CREAM! Situated at Scartho Fork, Florence’s Coffee Shop is both chic and welcoming, a terrific place to meet friends for a catch up or for a relaxed business lunch or just to take some time out for yourself and enjoy a great cup of tea or coffee and some of their delicious home made cakes. Cream teas are a speciality and now that they’ve added Yorvale’s famous ice cream to their menu there’s even more reason to call in and treat yourself to a little of what you fancy. Made on a family dairy farm in the heart of rural North Yorkshire using whole milk and double cream Yorvale ice cream is the perfect way to cool down on those long hot summer days and it goes just great with a piece of cake too!

GAS SAFETY WEEK

national gas safety week 2016

28

Gas Safety Week is an annual event that aims to raise awareness of gas safety and the importance of taking care of your gas appliances. It’s co-ordinated by the Gas Safe Register, the official list of gas engineers who are legally allowed to work on gas.

How gas safe is your home?

Badly fitted and poorly serviced gas appliances can cause gas leaks, fires, explosions and carbon monoxide poisoning. Every year thousands of people across the UK are diagnosed with carbon monoxide poisoning. It is a highly poisonous gas. You can’t see it, taste it or smell it, but it can kill quickly with no warning. You can protect yourself from the dangers by following these simple steps: • Trust the Triangle - only use a Gas Safe registered engineer to fit, fix or service your appliances • Get your gas appliances regularly serviced and safety checked every year • All Gas Safe registered engineers carry a Gas Safe Register ID card. Before any gas work is carried out always

check the card and make sure the engineer is qualified for the work you need doing • Fit an audible carbon monoxide alarm • Know the six main signs and symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning – headaches, dizziness, nausea, breathlessness, collapse and loss of consciousness. • Check for warning signs such as lazy yellow flames or black marks and stains around the appliance.

GAS SAFETY WEEK This could be an indication that your appliance is not working correctly and you should get it checked. • If you suspect anyone is carrying out gas work illegally, report them to Gas Safe Register. Remember to always ask to see a Gas safe register card before you let anyone work on your gas appliances!

C.A.Norman Plumbing & Heating

It’s also useful to know that if you’ve had gas work done in your property in the last six months, you can nominate it for a free gas safety inspection. For more information and to find and check a Gas Safe registered engineer go to www.GasSafeRegister.co.uk or call 0800 408 5500.

C.A.Norman is a family business with an outstanding reputation for service and integrity and their commitment to customer satisfaction is second to none. Father and son team Alan and Lee are both experienced plumbers, gas fitters and boiler engineers and they also specialise in installing kitchens, bathrooms, central heating and underfloor heating as well as solar systems.

They’re always happy to visit and give a free, no obligation quotation and for burst pipes and other emergencies they have a 24 hour call out service. So whether you’re thinking about investing in some home improvements or you’ve got a leak in urgent need of attention give C.A.Norman a call and let them take care of the job!

IN THE KNOW MOVING DRAMA, HILARIOUS COMEDY THRILLING PERFORMANCES

THE CAXTON THEATRE AUTUMN SEASON

T

he Caxton Players have been at the heart of our community’s arts scene for more than 75 years - ever since they were formed by a group of print workers to provide some light relief from the dark days of the blitz - and today they’re stronger than ever. In 2016 they’ve performed works by Neil Simon and John Godber and even ventured into Shakespearean comedy with a fine Midsummer Night’s Dream to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the Bard’s death and they’ve also given opportunities to talented local writers like Ben Parfrement Parkes, author of Dead And Breakfast, which kept theatregoers enthralled in March. The Autumn season includes a new adaptation of the classic Ealing comedy The Ladykillers (3rd10th September), written by Father Ted creator Graham Linehan and Same Time Next Year, (15th22nd October), a bittersweet romantic drama which tells the story of George and Doris, a happily married (but not to each other) couple who meet up for a romantic tryst once a year. The story of their lives is played out as they discuss the births, deaths, and marital problems each is experiencing at home, whilst also struggling to adapt to the social changes of the 1960s.

Caxton Youth Theatre SENIOR SESSIONS (AGE 11+) FRIDAYS FROM 5PM TO 6PM JUNIORS (AGE 7+) ON SATURDAYS FROM 1PM TO 2PM Email caxtonyouththeatre@ gmail.com for more information

KITT nights Thursday 22nd September QUIZ NIGHT Thursday 27th October HALLOWEEN NIGHT Thursday 17th November POEMS & PINTS

Bringing the year to a hilarious close is a production of Tim Firth’s Flint Street nativity (25th November - 3rd December) - the story of a school Christmas show with all the children played by adults. It’s hilarious and poignant and will bring back memories for everyone who ever had to dress up as Joseph or Mary or even a sheep or a donkey. There’s also the annual Caxton Youth Theatre production to look forward to (23rd & 24th September), which this year features scripted pieces themed around The Seven Deadly Sins. The Junior Youth Theatre will start by taking a look at the comedic side of the sins whilst in the second half of the show the Senior theatre will take the audience to the dark side. It’s an exciting programme with something for everyone and if you feel that you’d like to get involved with the Caxtons then why not pop along to one of their KITT nights and find out more. You’ll be made very welcome and you may discover talents that you never knew you possessed!

IFest16 was a great success. Let’s get ready for 2017!

T

he sun shone, the music played and the burgers sizzled at the Blossom Way Social Club as the highlight of the Immingham year IFest - took place once again. Once again the town showed what a strong community spirit it has as thousands of people turned out to enjoy the music, sunshine and great food plus a host of other entertainments including face painting, a magic show, balloon sculpture and loads of games. Along the way over £4500 was raised and this fantastic result means that the IFest (which has experienced some funding difficulties over the past year) is almost certainly saved for 2017. Our congratulations to Elaine Norton and everybody else at One Voice who work so hard to make Immingham a better place to live and if anybody fancies sponsoring the event next year, (or volunteering to help with any of One Voice's ventures) then please get in touch with Elaine Norton on 07513612964 or look online at www.onevoicecommunity.com

BACK TO SCHOOL

35

DON’T UNDERESTIMATE THE CHALLENGE OF GOING UP TO ‘BIG SCHOOL’ it’s the biggest change of their lives so far! As the summer holidays draw to a close our children's thoughts start to turn towards school again. It's always an important and challenging time but for one special cohort - those who are leaving junior school and entering secondary education - it's a particularly exciting and challenging time! New friends, new subjects and teachers, new routines. Making the jump from primary school to secondary school can be exciting for both you and your child but it can be stressful too - so here are our top tips on how to make the transition easier. 1. Let's keep calm now Try to take into account how apprehensive they must be on their first day of school. Explain to that first day nerves are normal and remind them that everybody else in their class probably feels the same. 2. Getting to school Will often involve a new, longer journey, possibly by public transport. Make sure they are comfortable with their new route. A few practice runs will help. 3. Making new friends Encourage them to talk to new people. Some children are more shy than others of course and all you can do is support them. 4. Cut them a bit of slack It will take a few weeks for them to start feeling confident and relaxed. Meanwhile they'll probably be even more difficult to live with than usual. You probably have to get used to it. After all it will only last until they're eighteen.

5. Eat well, sleep well They're going to be tired. Don’t underestimate the importance of healthy food and a good night’s sleep.

6. Getting used to the extra load There will be homework - and probably quite a lot of it! Teach them to plan their work and help them get into the new routine. 7. Independence day They're growing up so fast - it can be an emotional time for you both. maybe to good idea to make sure you have a copy of their timetable to help them along the way. 8. Confidence building The new school is going to test your child's confidence and selfesteem, so be generous with praise and help them over the rough patches. And if they really try and still struggle? We all know how heartbreaking that can be for them and for you. Well if that happens then you could do a lot worse than get in touch with our good friend Sarah at Kumon. Kumon offer English and Maths support that can build your child's confidence and help them get over the new school blues - so give them a call and see what they can do to help.

Damp problems arise where there is excess moisture in the structure of a building. One thing is for sure though, left untreated damp will always get worse. DSB Damp Proofing are David Stiles and Steve Burrows and they offer a wide range of specialist damp proofing services as well as plastering and treatments for dry rot and woodworm. Their service is personal and friendly and they’re always happy to give free no obligation quotations and good honest advice that you can trust.

oad Safety Week is a UK wide event organised annually by Brake, the road safety charity. It's a community involvement event that works with thousands of schools, employers, emergency services and community groups each year. Brake also uses the week to launch a national campaign to promote road safety awareness and safer road use. This year it's running between 21st and 27th November. Every year has a theme and this year's is the six point road safety pledge. The six points in question are as follows Slow – keeping within speed limits Sober – being free from alcohol or drugs Sharp – not driving tired, ill or with poor eyesight Silent – keeping your phone off and out of reach Secure – belting up in a safe vehicle Sustainable – only driving when you have to Brake believe that if we all stuck to these pledges then that would have a significant beneficial effect on road safety statistics and what a great thing that would be. If you'd like to take the sign up to get involved with Road Safety Week head to their website at www.roadsafetyweek.org.uk. You'll find loads of ideas and resources plus the chance to become an official member of this year's Road Safety Week event.

WHAT COULD YOU DO FOR ROAD SAFETY WEEK? Run a campaign against dangerous roads or dangerous road use in your community. Promote road safety and Road Safety Week online (eg through a community/organisation website or on Facebook and Twitter), with a link to their website. Make a Road Safety Week display for your community, for example in a supermarket, library or shopping centre. Run road safety educational initiatives or activities in local schools or clubs. Raise funds for Brake by running a fun event or holding a collection.

IN THE KNOW

A WHIZ OF A WIZ (IF EVER A WIZ THERE WAS)

T

here was a fantastic night of singing and dancing at the Grimsby Auditorium as their Summer Youth Musical – The Wizard Of Oz – (produced in conjunction with Lincs Inspire) took to the stage. It’s the thirteenth year of the auditorium musical and this year’s effort was a great success despite the full cast having been together for only ten days of rehearsals. Based on the John Kane adaptation for the RSC of Arlen and Yarburg’s film score the show is a chance to revisit all your favourite moments from the film and to see some of cinema’s best loved characters including Dorothy, Scarecrow, the Cowardly Lion and the Tin Man. It’s also a rare chance to enjoy some less well known moments that were cut from the film including the Tin Man’s back story and the Jitterbug sequence in which the Wicked Witch of The East releases weaponised dance insects (yes really) on the travellers to tire them out and make them easier to capture. The result was nothing short of a triumph with excellent performances from the principals, a chorus bursting with enthusiasm and energy, a top class orchestra in the pit and terrific sets and costumes, creating a spectacle that was great fun for audience and performers alike, and showing once again what an exciting depth of local talent the area possesses.
