Local Author’s Fayre Offers Readers A Chance To Meet The Authors

o coincide with this year’s Christmas lights switch on, Grimsby Central Library will be getting into the festive spirit by hosting a Local Authors Fayre on 19th November from 2pm - 7pm. Authors of fiction, non-fiction, local history and poetry as well as children’s authors, will be available to talk to the public about their work, with copies of their books available for sale on the day. There will also be an opportunity to buy an assortment of other local history titles and local history snowy scene Christmas cards, making the fayre a great opportunity to meet local writers and to grab a few Christmas presents at the same time!

Taiko Night At The Auditorium With Humber Taiko And Guests

e’re big fans of Taiko drumming here at The Peoples so we’ll be heading up to the Auditorium on Tuesday 24th November for Taiko Night. Taiko is Japanese ensemble drumming which incorporates choreographed movements and energy shouts to create powerful and exciting performances. There’ll be performances from our very own Gyoko Taiko, Coritani, Tetsu Taiko, Kakushigei and local schools plus a special guest performance by Kagemusha Taiko who are coming all the way from sunny Devon. Top Bands On The Way To Our Area This Autumn

here’s no shortage of great bands (and solo artists) coming to town over the next couple of months so we’ll just mention a few here to give you a taste. Saturday 17th October sees the return of the massively entertaining Sex Pistols Experience (pictured left) to The Yardbirds. They’re supported by local horror punks Dead Like Zombies so it should be quite a night. On Saturday 31st October Bracknell’s finest, The Hoosiers (top right), are playing a Halloween party gig at The Beachcomber – fancy dress is positively encouraged and Wednesday 11th November sees legendary drummer Corky Laing, of Canadian rock band Mountain, at The Yardbirds. On Friday 18th December local rock trio The Brew, a band with a huge following across Europe, pay their annual visit to their home town, also at the Yardbirds. Plenty there to choose from there and that’s just a small sample of what’s happening so if you check the venues’ websites you’re bound to find something that’s right up your street!

something old, something new ..... There’s so much good music around it’s a same to stick to just one variety. Tracey Edges celebrates the joys of genre blending.

omething new, something old, something borrowed or something blues. Whatever your taste in music happens to be you can usually find something to tickle your auditory senses in Grimsby or Cleethorpes. I’ve always had a wide taste in music. Ask me what I like best and I’d probably lean more towards the punk spectrum but I seem to spend my life chatting to musicians from all around the world and from all types of genres. This has resulted in my ‘Sunday Girl’ radio show being a totally bonkers mix of music – a big bag of all-sorts. That’s great – I’d get bored listening to the same stuff all the time and getting to know different people has opened up my mind to music that I wouldn’t have even considered listening to before. There are also genres within genres and I’ve found that although I’m still not keen on the type of ‘I got a d i

v o r c e then a big lorry driver ran over my teddy bear’ type of country music, I do like Americana. Add a bit of slide and blues into the mix and I’m away. My new guilty pleasure is watching the ‘Nashville’ TV series – ooh ‘eck! Folk was another, not-so-keen-on genre but folk people tend to be so nice that you can’t help but like their music as well – and there are plenty of different interpretations. Resistance is futile In a way that is helpful as when I get asked if I would like to go and see someone play, I can usually enjoy it and appreciate the experience – unless they are terrible, but that is a different story. There are plenty of festivals, or just ‘Fests’ as they suddenly seem to have become, whether blues, folk or jazz you are amply catered for in Cleethorpes, Grimsby and surrounding areas. Anarchy Fest was a brilliant line up at The Yardbirds Club, Grimsby and a follow on

Anarchy Entertainments promoted event was headlined by Teenage Bottlerocket, a slightly bonkers band from Laramie, Wyoming (images page left) who haven’t grown out of their skater-grunge-punk phase and why should they as it works perfectly well still. They were entertaining, they were funny and they were LOUD. They were also very well received by a packed audience who were well up for feeding the frenzy. Earlier in 2015 they released an album called Tales from Wyoming which is their 6th studio album and must say something for their staying power. It is certainly worth checking out their videos on You Tube and their website is: www. teenagebottlerocket.com London band, Wonk Unit (image above) were one of the bands that had played Anarchy Fest and were as good as their previous visit. With a definite following who requested favourite tracks and they got them with Nan, Lewisham. Horses, Kings’ Road Sporting Heroes and Je M’Appelle Alex, among others. I found that, after only my second experience of Wonk Unit that their songs were strong enough for me to also have my own favourites – always a good sign. www.wonkunit.com The opening band were Spoilers from Canterbury, Kent and their Kent fans could probably have heard them, without leaving Kent. They were a bit like Blink 182 on speed.

Pop punk with some melodic hardcore thrown in for good measure. Also on the bill, following their Anarchy fest appearance, were Grimsby band, Not Tonight And The Heachaches. I had all but missed their set then so it was good to catch them this time. It was a well balanced night with four bands that complemented each other but with plenty of variation to make for yet another great, Ross Stark promoted night. I thoroughly enjoyed it before I did the zig-zag walk to the handy taxi office. On September 26th Not Tonight And The Headaches launched their, freshly baked, album, If You Were Real You’d Do Your Own Stunts, at a free event at Yardbirds. That was also a great night out with support provided by The State Of Art, from Grimsby, (www.thestateofart.bandcamp.com). Some pokey bass with crashing drums and heavy riffs made them easy to listen to and with some interesting sections within each song they lifted their set and added interest. Dynamite Dynamite, from down the road at Scunthorpe are a melodic punk band and have also just released an album: Apologies/ Apathy. You can have a listen/buy from: www. dynamitedynamite.bandcamp.com I wish that Dynamite Dynamite had preceded The Siknotes as they were a bit lost for me as my insides, and ears, had trouble settling back

down afterwards. I have seen them before, ages ago, so it wasn’t them, just me. The Siknotes, also from Grimsby, provided the experience of having all your internal organs pogoing around while everything else vibrated manically. Right from the off, when the lead guitarist came on stage on his own, you had your eardrums thrashed, without the addition of the other band members. Add the rest of the band and you needed to tie yourself down for the rest of the set. They were fast and brash. One track had a hint of rockabilly hiding under there somewhere and another was like having a manic fiddler at a ceilidh on a 30x fast forward. They was lots of banter with the audience and, as it was Pete’s birthday they had been ‘celebrating’. This made for a very happy band, very comfortable on stage with an audience, and good to watch. I thought that they were really great. Earlier this year they released a four track ep, “Crusin’ For A Boozin”, with tracks: Broken, Dave The Fan, The End and GY Til I Die. However, they are definitely a band that you are missing out on if you just stick to listening to a recording. You might need a sick note, afterwards, but this is one Siknotes that you really need to have in front of you. For now though, go to www. thesiknotes.bandcamp.com to get a taste. Be warned though – their live set is this: plus – Plus – PLUS!

The main event of the night was, of course, Not The Night And The Headaches who are four guys, enjoying their pop-punk mission and they are good to listen to if you want a bit of life but don’t want your ears to be seared and on fire from the inside – the Siknotes can provide that for you! They go under the names of, wait for it... Jimmy Headache, James Elliott, on bass and vocals, Matt Hammer, Matt Snell, or even Snellitor, why have one name if three will do, on drums, Throbert Robbington III, Rob Tew, on guitar and vocals, and Sir Matthew Cadeson, aka King Awesome aka Matt Cade, on guitar and backing vocals. Not Tonight And The Headaches have been together, as a band, since March 2008 but various combinations of the band members have played together, in different bands, since 1996 so are well locked into both the local music scene and each other. You can get the picture, just from their great name but also when you read their bio and it says: “Four exceptionally attractive and motivated individuals on a four man mission to resurrect pop punk. The Headaches have the power to move you.”

I don’t get the impression that there is a big ego problem going on here, as I said earlier, they just seem to get up on stage and enjoy themselves. And they have the happiest drummer – EVER. He just had a wide grin plastered on all of the time. Described as pop punk, I think that they fall nicely into the middle. For example, if you wanted to listen to something upbeat with punk guitar rhythm and catchy tunes with some bass and drums raw life to it, but don’t want your brains vibrated to mush and your ears fused, then Not Tonight And The Headaches will do the job nicely without, despite their name, giving you a throbbing headache! They will give you, not a vicious, Glasgow Kiss but, rather, a, more gentle, Goodbye Kiss... Goodbye Kiss happens to be my favourite track off the new, album If You Were Real You’d Do Your Own Stunts and has guest vocals from Adam Lee from China Drum, as does, the equally great, Falter Ego. After a strong night of bands, Not Tonight And The Headaches, easily held their own as headliners, and seemed to really enjoy their own set. You can listen to, and buy, the 10 track album at a bargain price of £4, for the digital version or just an extra £1 gets you the CD pack from: nottonightandtheheadaches. bandcamp.com Along with going to live gigs, that is the really easy way to help to support local bands.

It’s full of strong tracks from She’s With You, which starts off with a hint of The Stranglers before ramping it up, followed by Dislocated with its strong beat. Live, I really enjoyed I Guess This Is Progress and it didn’t disappoint on the recording. Reasons To Smile and Thick As Thieves, I could go on but go to Bandcamp and have a listen for yourself. They are not a soft option but easily listenable to and it’s definitely one of those albums that grows on you the more you listen to it. You find yourself jiggling along to Not Tonight And The Headaches whether live or recorded. Some bands are better one way or the other but these are pretty level for both. They gave me a bio that really did make me laugh out loud and they, hopefully, said “With the album ready to go, 2015 is definitely their year and if not it will certainly be 2016, and as a last resort 2017 but rest assured that sometime soon, Not Tonight And The Headaches will be more than just your mums favourite band.” I don’t know about their mums but by the end of the night, from just Rob, performing a solo acoustic number, to Adam Lee making a guest appearance, on lead vocals, (I love his voice), to plenty of friends and family joining the band on stage. They are a very likeable band, good to listen to, and obviously are very well liked. I can definitely say: Yes, Tonight I will have a headache, please!

THEATRE

In their new home at St Martin’s it’s full steam ahead for Fusion Youth Theatre

t’s been all change for the multiaward winning Fusion Youth Theatre just lately, but now that they have successfully transferred to their new home at St Martin’s Church (the one on the junction of Scartho Road and Sutcliffe Avenue opposite the swimming baths), they’ll be expanding their activities to make the church into a major local arts hub. It’s a big opportunity for Fusion and comes about as a result of the generosity of the Parish of St Mary and St James. Their new calendar includes concerts, craft fairs and evenings of carols and poetry (you can find details of many of these on page 12) but theatre will always be at the heart of the Fusion brand. They gave a successful debut performance of their latest project Goldilocks The Thief - at the recent Urban Arts Festival and there’ll be another on December 1st, alongside another new work, The Ninth Wave by Josie-Anne Gray. They’ll also be performing an evening of Winter Stories on Saturday 5th December at 7pm at St Martin’s and we’ve no doubt there’s lots more in the pipeline - so just watch this space!

live at the Beachcomber Sometimes you look forward to a gig for ages only to find that when you get there it’s even better than you dared hope it would be. An ecstatic Tracey Edges reviews Space

t was a miserable night out, the pavements slick with rain and the air full of the noise from date inappropriate fireworks, but I will certainly remember, remember the 7th of November as it was the night that I got lost in Space. Space the Band, that is – not the type that all the rockets were aspiring and failing loudly and miserably to reach. Space certainly didn’t fail miserably, although, to an extent, Grimsby and Cleethorpes did. Where was everyone? There was an enthusiastic crowd but the Beachcomber should have been heaving. This was a ‘name’ band, one that had hits – chart success of the type that trips off your tongue. Songs that you sing along to when they come on the radio. Space are from Liverpool and to use the vernacular they’re a boss band. I thought that I would enjoy the gig but, excuse me as I’m going to gush a little here, I loved it. From the very first beat they had me, through all of the songs that I knew and the very few that I didn’t. As I said – Boss. Space formed in 1993 when Tommy Scott and Andy Parle recruited Jamie Murphy and Kraftwerk fanatic Franny Griffiths to help translate the sounds in Tommy’s head

into music and after a couple of single releases plus some live gigs it all took off with the release of Neighbourhood, a tale of Tommy’s childhood street, in Liverpool, but with serial killers and transvestites in the starring roles. Even if you don’t know any other Space tracks, you’ll have heard Female Of The Species, their definitive single, and an instant classic that stayed in the UK Top 40 for three months. In 1997 and 1998 they had top five hits with Avenging Angels and The Ballad Of Tom Jones, with Cerys Matthews. The single Twenty Million Miles From Earth, released in May 2004, was the last from that time before they quietly split up and went their own ways. Speed forward to 2009 and the band members met again at the funeral of drummer, Andy Parle and discussed reforming. In 2011 they played a sell out reunion gig at the O2 Academy in Liverpool which introduced their new material and sound. 2012 saw Space working on their new album, Attack Of The Mutant 50ft Kebab and performing extensively at festivals. Jamie has since left but with front man Tommy and keyboardist, Franny along with Al on drums and Phil on bass, Space are very much back in business.

November 7th 2015 saw Space play in Cleethorpes with support from home town boys, Chariots. Headed by Rob Distant (think Vince Noir, from The Mighty Boosh, strutting about like Mick Jagger), Chariots’ sound is heavy/trippy Psychedelia. Their influences are definitely rooted in the 60s and this makes them good to listen to as well as being a bit different to the norm. For some reason I was reminded a bit of Ming City Rockers and Just Mammals – both favourite local bands, so that’s a compliment. Worth going out to see. With a projection screen behind them Space were heralded onto the stage and straightaway got everyone to the front. This was the very definition of an intimate gig – with a relaxed band and an appreciative audience who, like myself, were right into the atmosphere within the first few beats. There was dancing from the off and most people didn’t stop until the music did. I didn’t know the first song but then it was straight into the snappy Drop Dead, followed by the very popular Mister Psycho. Whatever the subject matter Space songs make you smile as you sing along to them – you just can’t help it. This was a band that didn’t have a fancy light show, or gimmicks. The projection was low key and non-invasive. An accent. No fuss, no faff. Not needed. Tommy, in a plum velvet jacket and pork pie spiv hat, both soon dispensed with, needed no more than his personality and his voice to capture his audience.

“Yer Awright? Thanks fer coming,” got a cheer and all on board. Next up Begin Again, with the somewhat creepy lyrics: “How can I love again, Now she's gone again, I'm on that ship again, Called a sinking heart. Oh I am so lonely, I'm the man who would kill for love.” It’s a song with hints of Bond theme to it and Al, dextrously caught his drumsticks as he flung them out of control and just carried on stirring, not at all shaken (yes, I did notice!) as he provided a heavy beat throughout the set. Tommy Scott on distinctive lead vocals and guitar and Phil Hartley, on bass, provided the visual movement and performance while Franny Griffiths, on keys, calmly wove the twilight musical fog that is Space into all the nooks and crannies of every track. Various tones, were explored, from the plaintive to the intense but mainly with the signature dark, tongue firmly planted in cheek, humour that runs throughout the Space discography. How to include one of the favourites, The Ballad of Tom Jones, without partner in crime, Cerys Matthews? Ah, the screen and a backing track, that’s how. Simply done, well done and an effective way of jumping the Cerys hurdle. Is it good planning to follow an old favourite with a brand new outing? When it is as strong as Strange World it

is. Combining their signature sound with a Mariachi vibe results in a Space that is a band of now, not just one with an illustrious past. Sexy, latin and mysterious, it’s instantly appealing but then manages to grow and grow on you, even more. I’d had it stuck in my head for about 3 weeks and it is now back in there with a vengeance. I can’t wait for the rest of the album when it’s released and the Mariachi vibes kept the crowd swaying along and thankfully, no one was standing too close to me as I couldn’t keep my mouth shut – been singing it around the house for far too long for that! Avenging Angels lived up to its name and was kickass and The Female Of The Species was as good live as you would want, or expect, it to be – excellent. Burn Down The School was on fire and Neighbourhood got everyone jumping, on stage and off. Building up to the Space version of We Gotta Get Out Of This Place the whole gig was one of songs that captivated the crowd, even the, surprisingly few, tracks that you didn’t know. I went to see Space expecting to enjoy the show but didn’t expect to come away buzzing feeling that they are one of the best bands that I have seen play live. To anyone that didn’t bother to go – you missed a great performance and massive respect to a band that played their hearts out for everyone that was there.

So was that a good summer or what? The Peoples asked Amy MacDonnell of Cleethorpes Tourist Information for her view of 2015 and of prospects for the resort in 2016 ....

Hi Amy, thanks for taking the time to talk to us. Has it been a good year for Cleethorpes from a tourism perspective? It certainly has. We’ve had a lot of successful events and the resort is going from strength to strength with increased visitors numbers every year. We were named Gold Winner for East Midlands In Bloom and The Pier has been restored to its former glory and reopened. We’ve had the Beach Soccer Tournament and the Colour Run and of course we’ve secured National Armed Forces Day for 2016. Cleethorpes is definitely going places and both locals and visitors have seen improvements, helping make NE Lincolnshire a great place to live, work, invest and visit. What were the highlights of the year for the resort? The highlights for 2015 have been the major events. We’ve had so much on offer this year. The Race For Life kick started the season followed by some firm favourites including the Folk Festival, the Carnival, the 1940s Weekend, Armed Forces Weekend, Cleefest and Cleethorpes Scooter Rally, but for me the highlights have definitely been securing the National Armed Forces Event for 2016 and the first ever Cleethorpes Colour Run. What do you think will be the biggest and best days in Cleethorpes next year? 2016 promises to be to be quite a year, with something for everyone to enjoy. National Armed Forces Day will certainly be a date not to be missed as will the return of the Colour Run for a second year. Yes, we have lots of exciting things coming up. This October will see the first Beer Festival held at the Meridian Showground, with live entertainment and hundreds of real ales, ciders and beers. Thomas the Tank Engine will be visiting the Cleethorpes Coast Light Railway over two weekends in October and we also have the annual Halloween Spooktacular Firework Event at Pleasure Island - a night of family fun with rides in the dark and a fantastic

Parkway Cinema are bringing Jack and the Beanstalk to life in their pantomime and to complete the year we have Cleethorpes Winter Wonderland 2015, a week long celebration offering unique quality products, entertainment and even an outdoor ice rink. Santa will be in attendance too, of course! Cleethorpes will really be capturing the festive spirit.

versus Lashings All Stars at The Linden Homes Club

leethorpes Town FC have come a long way since their foundation (under the name Lincolnshire Soccer School) by ex-Grimsby Town player Tommy Watson as a training project for local youngsters. The club expanded rapidly, gaining recognition from the Football League for their youth work, setting up their first adult team in 2003 and becoming the biggest football club in NE Lincolnshire. They’ve got plenty of silverware to show for their efforts, having won the Lincs League and Challenge Cup in 2011-12 and the Northern Counties East League in 2013-14. In 2015 they

beat Willand Rovers at Bristol to lift the Toolstation Cup – their biggest achievement to date. The club has almost 40 teams, including more than 30 juniors, plus adult sides for men and women and six a side teams and they’re famous for their commitment to grassroots football and for raising money for good causes. At present they’re based at Bradley Pitches but plans are afoot to return to their spiritual home, the Linden Homes Club, which is where we went to see them take on the mighty Lashings All Stars, featuring the likes of Luther Blissett, Des Walker and Phil Babb. Lashings ran out the winners by the odd eight goals in ten but that wasn’t really the point with hundreds of pounds raised for charity and a fantastic time had by all. Let’s be honest, chimneys are a mystery to most of us. Smoke goes up. Santa comes down. What more do we need to know? We asked the experts, Nik Dawson and Becky Bell

The Peoples: So let’s start with an obvious question. Why do I need my chimney swept? Is it really all that important? Nik: Chimneys need to be kept clear to allow the free passage of dangerous combustion gasses. Regular sweeping will remove soot, bird nests, cobwebs and any other blockages. Chimney sweeping will also increase the efficiency of some heating appliances. Becky: Sweeping helps to prevent chimney fires, reduces the risk of dangerous fume emissions from and assists complete combustion of fuel. How often should my chimney be swept to keep it working smoothly? Nik: The sweep frequency will depend on a number of factors which include the type of fuel used, the type of appliance, the duration of regular use, the moisture content of wood fuels and the type of chimney you have. Generally speaking, once a year is fine. Do I need a sweep if I have a gas fire? Nik: Although burning gas does not normally deposit soot, there are still numerous other problems which can affect chimney function which sweeping can solve or identify. It will also help with the prevention of chimney fires and even reduce the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. Becky: A clean chimney is a safer and more efficient chimney. It’s not just about soot, it’s about safety so yes a gas fire chimnet still needs regular sweeping. Sometimes my chimney smokes into my room. Why does this happen? Nik: There could be a number of reasons for this, from cold weather to birds nests. It certainly needs checking out. Give me a call and I'll come and see! Does chimney sweeping cause a lot of mess? Nik: Absolutely not. A good sweep takes a pride in doing a clean sweep! The fireplace is sealed prior to sweeping so mess is kept to a minimum! How long does a sweep take and how much will it cost? Nik: A standard sweep normally takes 45 minutes to an hour, and prices start from £30, which is a lot less than most people expect!

t seems like the time has finally arrived where the majority of people understand that climate change is real and that the world needs to take action but for many people it seems like just that. Something the world should do. There sometimes doesn’t seem to be much point in taking action on your own. After all, what real practical difference can one person make?

Want to cut your carbon footprint? Solar can help but the time to act really is now!

The answer is that an individual can make a big difference – and even do themselves some good in the process. Take solar panels as an example. They work by generating electricity from a flow of electrons between sheets of ionised silicon – it’s called a photovoltaic effect – but aside from the mumbo jumbo the point is that however much energy you generate from sunlight, that’s a chunk of electricity that doesn’t have to come from fossil fuel burning. Good for the planet. Even better than that is the fact that when you generate your own electricity and feed your surplus back into the National Grid, the government pays you for doing it. So your solar system pays for itself and eventually even turns a profit. Good for you. The problem is that the Feed In Tariff, the rate you get paid for the electricity you generate is about to be cut drastically – from nearly 13p per kWh to under 2p per kWh. Not so good. But there is still time to qualify for the higher rate and once you’ve qualified it’s guaranteed for twenty years – plenty long enough to make your money back on your set up costs. So if you’ve been thinking about solar for a while but haven’t made your mind up yet, now is a good time to get the information you need to make a decision. Impartial information and advice is available through Ofgen at www.ofgem.gov.uk/ environmental-programmes and there are also excellent resources at the Which magazine website www.which.co.uk. Between them they should help you find out what system is right for you and advise you how to make sure you get the benefit of the higher tariffs. But don’t delay, the clock, powered by home generated green energy, really is ticking!

Halloween!

alloween is a time of celebration and superstition, a festival of transition, marking not only the change from life to death but also from summer to winter, from plenty to scarcity and from Paganism to Christianity. The festival is believed to have its origins in the ancient Celtic rites of Samhain, which marked the beginning of winter. Costumes were worn, bonfires lit to ward off evil spirits and in some areas people would go from house to house in disguise, often riding hobby horses, singing and being given food in return. Homes which gave generously were considered to have guaranteed themselves luck for the next six months until spring came round again. This practice, known as guising, is the probable origin of trick or treating. In Ireland the carving of turnips into human faces became popular during the middle ages and, once the Americas

had been discovered, the pumpkin became the sculptors’ vegetable of choice and the Jack o’Lantern was launched onto an unsuspecting world. In the 8th century, Pope Gregory III declared November 1st to be All Saints Day, (or All Hallows Day), a time to honour saints and martyrs. The evening before was known as All Hallows’ Eve which, in time, was shortened to Halloween. Scholars are divided as to how much of the ancient pagan tradition became part of the Christian festival but one of the new traditions that developed was ‘souling’ - the baking and giving of soul cakes in honour of one’s ancestors. Groups of poor people would often go from door to door, collecting soul cakes in return for the offering of prayers for the departed. As part of this process candles would be lit - soul lights to guide the spirits on their journey to heaven - and church bells would ring out to cheer them on their way.

Nowadays of course Halloween is most associated with fancy dress and trick or treating, a custom which first developed in the USA and has gradually spread back into Europe, and Halloween is a major festival all round the world. The biggest Halloween parade is the annual New York Parade. It’s one of America’s only major nighttime parades and attracts more than 60,000 costumed participants and 2 million spectators. More than 100 million people watch on television. In Latin America the day is often celebrated as La Dia de los Muertos ( the Day Of The Dead) and if you’d like to find out more about that then check page 12 of this magazine for details of Day Of The Dead events at the Central Library. The awards were judged by hundreds of top food critics, chefs, cooks, restaurateurs and producers including Masterchef judge and restaurant critic Charles Campion, TV presenter and cook Aggie Mackenzie, Great British Bake Off winner Frances Quinn, Masterchef the Professionals finalist, Adam Handling, and food buyers from Harrods, Selfridges, Waitrose and Marks & Spencer. Make more of trees in your garden

rees are so useful in the garden but many people shy away from using them and that’s a shame because trees are so versatile.

They come in all shapes and sizes and can be used to add structure, colour and movement to the garden. From flowering cherries and crab apples to evergreen yews, there are trees to suit every taste and there’s a wide variety of leaf sizes, shapes and colours to choose from. Some flower magnificently in spring while others offer brilliant autumn colour or bright fruit or berries. Trees can be selected for all soil types including very wet and dry land and if you choose the right variety they can tolerate acid, chalky, sandy and clay soils. Trees are best planted in between October and April in well dug soil with plenty of composted vegetable material. Dig a hole that is wider than the root ball but not deeper and consider using a stake to support the plant for the first couple of years. Water regularly while the tree is young and keep an eye open for signs disease and hey ho you’re on your way to an arboretum because once you get the tree bug there’ll be no stopping you.

Grimsby’s first Urban Arts Festival brings a splash of music, dance and colour to St James Square

here was plenty for the whole family to enjoy on September 19th when the inaugural Grimsby Urban Arts Festival brought a big slice of hip hop culture to St James Square – including epic graffiti art, DJing and a fantastic display of break dancing from the Leeds based troupe Blood Masterz. The festival, organised by renowned local graffitist Lyns Powles and Paula Denton of Denton Associates, drew internationally celebrated artists from all over the country and while the beats rang out and rhymes were busted in the shadow of the Minster a fascinated crowd looked on as stunning works of art were created from scratch on walls and boards in the St James House undercroft. Since it was also Talk Like A Pirate Day it was fitting that the most prominent position went to Grimsby artist Tens and Dime One from North Wales with their magnificent ghost ship design.

Meanwhile inside the church there were craft stalls, a Minecraft and Virtual Graffiti display, an exhibition of original artworks and photographic memories of local graffiti of the past, including several pieces that once graced the walls surrounding Ainslie Street Rec. In the afternoon the adult members of Fusion Youth Theatre gave the debut performance of their new physical theatre production Goldilocks The Thief. A fascinating and exciting day and the plans are already being drawn up for the 2016 festival, so if you missed in this year just make sure you’re there next time!

t was a big night down at The Yardbirds on September 26th as pop punk quartet Not Tonight And The Headaches threw a party to celebrate the release of their new album, If You Were Real You’d Do Your Own Stunts, released on the Boss Tuneage label. Marking a move towards a poppier, more radio friendly style the album is full of great melodies and irresistible hooks and it features guest vocals by Adam Lee of China Drum on Goodbye Kiss and Falter Ego. Adam turned up at the launch to reprise his studio performance, (that’s him in the middle of the picture above) and with support from The State Of Art, Dynamite, Dynamite and The Siknotes a good time was had by all.
