Legendary Punks 999 Headed For The Yardbirds

The Chandelier Of Lost Earrings At Grimsby Minster There’s a fascinating new exhibit in Grimsby Minster, the third in a programme of contemporary art exhibitions organised by Our Big Picture Ltd. It’s the work of artists Sharon Campbell and Lauren Sagar who appealed for people to donate earrings that had become separated from their partners. In all they were given more than 3000 earrings which they fashioned into a magnificent chandelier that drips with glittering jewels and delicate threads of fine chain. IN THE KNOW

welcome to the year of the rooster!

C

hinese New Year’s Day, also known as the Spring Festival, is an important date in the traditional Chinese calendar. The date varies but this year it falls on January 28th. It is the high point of a celebration which lasts for fifteen days, from New Year’s Eve to the Lantern Festival and by tradition it is a day for families and will often feature a reunion dinner. Houses will be cleaned and decorated with red paper cutouts and scrolls of poetry and after the meal is done firecrackers will be set off and gifts of money exchanged in red envelopes. The years of the calendar are named after the twelve animals who make up the Chinese zodiac and their order is drawn from the legend of the Jade Emperor’s great race. This year is the year of the rooster. The rooster came tenth in the race and it’s year is therefore tenth in the calendar cycle. In Chinese culture, the rooster represents fidelity and punctuality, because it wakes people up on time. People born in the year of the Rooster are beautiful, kind hearted, hard working, courageous, independent, humorous and honest. They like to keep the home neat and organized but they can be a bit feisty so watch what you say while they’re in earshot!

CHIEF EXECS TAKE ON A MARATHON CHALLENGE IN AID OF YMCA HUMBER

T

he London Marathon will take place on April 24th this year and if you’re a keen armchair sports fan you’ll probably be watching along with most of the rest of the country, admiring the spectacle and the fancy dress and of course the efforts of the runners. This year there’ll be a special local reason for watching because among the competitors from our area will be Malcolm Smith, chief executive of YMCA Humber and Rob Walsh, chief executive of North East Lincolnshire Council who will be running with a team to raise money for YMCA Humber. They’re both keen runners but while Rob, who is also the man responsible for the Dong Energy 10k race, (it’s on July 30th this year and entries are open) has run the marathon before this will be Malcolm’s first effort at the 26 plus mile distance. So best of luck to both and we’ll keep an eye open for you on The Mall. If you’d like to sponsor the YMCA team at the London Marathon or make a donation then go to www.justgiving.com/ymcaeng

International Women’s Day

#IWD2017

arch 8th 2017 is International Women's Day, a global celebration of the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women all around the world. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity. This year’s theme is Be Bold For Change and individuals and groups are being invited to hold events and celebrations around that theme.

#BEBOLDFORCHANGE

You could, for example, use the day as an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of women or to personally commit to helping to drive forward gender parity. There are lots of ideas and suggestions at their website www.internationalwomensday.com where you’ll also find information and features on the history of IWD. On the next few pages you’ll find some of the many businesswomen who make such a positive contribution to the local economy and The Peoples would like to take this opportunity to salute them and the examples they set for today’s young women.

JD Carpet Binding Josie Dennehy was told by a clairvoyant that a business opportunity was on the way – and that weekend her son introduced her to her first carpet binding machine! From that point on there was no stopping her and with the assistance of the E-Factor and the support of her husband Pat she put together a business plan and the rest is history. Josie’s an expert in binding the edges of rugs and carpets with high quality wool threads, transforming frayed carpets and off cuts into good as new floor coverings. Her customers have included the London Olympics but she’s proud of the fact that she gives the same attention and care to all orders, large and small. She also provides non-slip matting for rugs and a range of carpet and upholstery services including cleaning, stain guarding and allergy protection.

Barnet’s of Sea View has been our favourite gentleman’s hairdresser for a long time and we’ve no doubt that it will continue to be so now that former stylist Julie Wotton has taken over as the new owner. She isn’t planning any major changes however. “We have an excellent customer base who seem to like what we do” Julie explains, “so we we must be doing something right.” How does she feel about stepping up to become proprietor of her own business? “It’s a really exciting time but I’m lucky because I have exceptional staff to rely on. We’ve been together for years and we all get on really well so it’s like going to work to see your friends. You’ll sometimes hear people say that women don’t work well together but don’t you believe a word of it. A team of strong, able women is the best team there is!”

WOMEN IN BUSINESS WELCOME TO KUMON

HELPING CHILDREN EXCEL AT LEARNING

MATHS AND ENGLISH INSTRUCTION

W

e all want our children to fulfil their potential at school but sometimes it can feel like we just pack them off each day and hope for the best. It’s difficult to know what help we can give them but one practical step that can work wonders is to enrol them in the Kumon programme. Kumon originated in Japan and is now a wordwide educational phenomenon. The Grimsby Centre is at Healing Village Hall and is run by Sarah Prior (pictured right receiving an award to mark her first thirteen years as a Kumon instructor). The aim of the programme is to help students become advanced learners with positive attitudes to study by boosting their self-confidence as they work out how to overcome challenges and problems by themselves.

FEBRUARY INTRODUCTORY FREE TRIAL

If you think that Kumon might be just right for your child then why not bring them along for a 2 week trial during February to see how they get on (subject to availability) Kumon is an independent study programme, but students are never alone. Sarah provides the guidance and encouragement that students need to take their learning into their own hands, increasing their motivation to succeed and achieve. Sessions take place between 3.30 and 5.30pm every day with students dropping in for about twenty minutes, once or twice a week. Why not give Sarah a call to see if Kumon can work for you and your child.

RAISING MONEY AND AWARENESS WITH THE MAYOR’S CHARITY CHALLENGE

I

f you’d like to be part of a fantastic charity event over the May Day Bank Holiday weekend (Saturday April 29th to Monday May 1st) you’ll be delighted to hear about The Mayor’s Charity Challenge which was announced recently at the Town Hall and promises a weekend of exercise, fun and physical challenges, covering the whole borough from Immingham to Wold Newton and all points between.

The Mayor of North East Lincolnshire, Councillor Christina McGilligan-Fell is joined by Health Tree Foundation Community Champion Lauren Alexander, Dr John Price, Headmaster of St James School and Health Tree mascot Scrubs the Bear at the launch of the Mayor's Charity Challenge at the Town Hall.

Plans for the challenge were outlined by the Mayor and it certainly looks like being a terrific programme. Setting out from the Meridian marker in Cleethorpes, the Mayor will cycle the length and breadth of the borough, accompanied by a team of helpers and performing challenges along the way. Challenges will be set by local individuals and businesses and if you’ve got any ideas then the organisers would love to hear from you. Along the way there’ll be plenty of opportunities to raise money for vital local charities, including the Nidd Diabetes Fund (established in memory of local jeweller John Nidd) and the Cat Zero programme, as well as raising awareness of the important issues surrounding both causes and, of course, the health and lifestyle benefits of cycling. The Health Tree Foundation, formerly the Scartho Road Hospital Charity, will also be involved and will be attending many of the weekend’s events and challenges, accompanied by their new mascot, Scrubs the Bear. There’ll also be a Go Ride session for kids at St Hugh’s Hospital and a young people’s biathlon at St James School. Additionally community groups along the route are being encouraged to organise events to celebrate the weekend, including offering refreshments or setting challenges for the Mayor and her team to complete. Speaking at the launch the head of St James’ School, Dr John Price said that North East Lincolnshire is a fantastic area for cycling and running and that the event will help raise awareness of the joys of cycling on the Wolds and bring people into the area. The event has a fundraising target of at least £10,000 and the Mayor explained the importance of the two charities which are close to her heart. “I feel that we have a responsibility to do more”, she said. “I want this event to help bring the community together and to be a success for everyone. I would like it to be a part of the legacy of my year as Mayor”. If you’d like to get involved with the Mayor’s Charity Challenge contact Grimsby Town Hall or phone 01472 324109.

Comforts

I

t's a traditional January pastime. Collecting together all the furniture and home decorating brochures, plus the ones with bathrooms and kitchens, and trying to decide which part of your dream home you're going to work on this year. A new bathroom from our friends at Style Bathrooms? A kitchen from Kitchen Discount. Brilliantly colourful new blinds? Try talking to Ken at Kensway. Or maybe there are some issues with the roof or the electrics or the plumbing. If so you'll find plenty of tradesmen you can trust in this section too. On the home design front it looks like this is going to be the year for luxury interiors with everything just a little bit over the top and no expense spared. We particularly like this bedroom from Stuart Jones even if it is a bit out of our price range. Whatever you choose to do just make sure that you have a great time choosing and that you really do turn your house into the home of your dreams.

Celebrating their first year in their new home ....

of Church Street, Grimsby

t’s just a year now since Style Bathrooms moved into their new premises on Church Street, Grimsby, giving them the chance to showcase their impressive range of bathroom furniture, including furniture by Mereway, wall panels by Swish Marbrex, taps by Grohe, showers by Aqualisa and shower enclosures by Kudos. One thing that hasn’t changed with the move is the quality of service that you can expect from a Style Bathrooms installation. Once you’ve paid them a visit to discuss your requirements they’ll visit your home to measure up and their expert designers will put together the bathroom of your dreams. Style have their own in house installation team - they don’t use subcontractors - and that means that you can be sure your bathroom installation will go with the minimum of fuss and upheaval. Their project managers will keep everything running smoothly and Style always clear up at the end of each day so that mess is kept to an absolute minimum. They also offer a supply only service on a vast range of top quality fixtures and fittings so if that’s your preferred option then you’ll find a huge choice and excellent value. HOMES to leak back into your home. They also increase the risk of chimney fires and long term smoke damage to your furniture and to the fabric of your home. So how often should a domestic chimney be swept? Usually once a year for light use and twice a year for fireplaces in regular use. A professional sweep will be able to advise you more exactly because some fuels burn dirtier than others. Doesn’t it take ages and make a horrible mess? Probably much less of either than you think. With modern techniques and equipment most professional sweeps work quickly and with minimal mess.

A clean chimney is a healthy chimney!

W

e all know that if we have a real fire we should have our chimney swept regularly, that’s just common sense, but perhaps we’re not entirely sure why it’s so important. It’s got something to do with soot and Mary Poppins and not getting your Christmas presents dirty, we know that much but further than that we probably can’t go. Spring is a great time to get your chimney swept because of all the soot build up over the winter so we asked a friendly local expert just why chimney care is so vital for the health of your home. Why is it so important to get my chimney swept regularly? Your chimney is the exhaust pipe for your home and it needs looking after.

Soot build up, birds nests and debris from damaged brickwork can all stop your chimney from working properly and cause dangerous gases

So how much will a sweep cost? That’s one of those how long is a piece of string questions but prices start from about £35 to £40 for an open fire. If you need to have the integrity of your chimney seal tested, or any remedial work done, then your sweep will quote you a price. So there you go. Chimney sweeping - more important than you realise, cheaper than you think and if you give our friends Brushed Up a call you can be assured of first class service and minimal mess. So why not give your chimney a bit of TLC soon, because a healthy chimney makes for a healthy home!

CASH IN THE ATTIC

Is There Cash In Your Attic? Have you got loads of junk cluttering up your house? Is the attic full, the spare room overflowing, the shed bursting at the seams? If so then maybe it's time you had a proper clear out because what's junk to you may well be worth cold hard cash to somebody else. Computers, games consoles, phones, watches, almost any kind of gadget plus bikes and musical instruments - there's probably a good home waiting for them just down the road. Of course it’s going to be a time consuming business selling them so your best bet is to take them all to Cash Generator, where you can always be sure of a good deal.

CARING

Could you be a Cancer Champion?

M

ost of us have known someone, possibly a family member, work colleague or a good friend, who has been a victim of cancer. The condition can have a devastating effect on families and leave loved ones feeling powerless to help but one possibility for those who’d like to do their bit in the fight against the condition is to become a Cancer Champion. Cancer Champions are ordinary members of the community who undertake a one day training course, following which their role is simply to raise awareness among their family, friends, neighbours and work colleagues, by word of mouth and informal distribution of information. They promote early detection of cancers and signpost people with whom they have contact to the range of information and services available and motivate and assist people to seek early medical assistance. The one day course lasts four hours and there are no fees or entry

qualifications and definitely no exam. There’s a free lunch provided too! It’s divided into two parts, the first of which offers an overview of the basic facts about different types of cancer and the signs and symptoms of each. In the afternoon session the course concentrates on ways to make people aware of possible health issues and how to advise people on where to get information and access health services. Training sessions are scheduled to take place at Centre4 in Wootton Road, on Tuesday 21st March, Monday 15th May, Friday 7th July, Saturday 9th September and Monday 20th November.

Want to make life more comfortable? A lift or stairlift can increase your

All sessions run from 10am to 2pm and free parking is available. If you’d would like to book onto the training, please contact Rachel Buckley, Health & Well-Being Programme Assistant on 01472 232265 or email CPG.Collaborative@nhs.net

f you’ve ever had to search for residential care for a relative then you’ll know how stressful and worrying the process can be. It’s hard to know where to start and how to make a decision but we’d recommend that you put The Grove Care Home in Ings Lane, Waltham at the top of your list of premises to visit. Nestled in leafy Waltham, The Grove offers both comfort and independence for residents. It has 52 well appointed rooms each with an ensuite walk-in shower and well equipped kitchenette to allow maximum independence. Recently renovated throughout The Grove has a large, bright sitting room that looks out over extensive landscaped gardens and with its brightly coloured leather sofas you could mistake it for the reception area of a chic boutique hotel. The food is good too and relatives and other visitors are always welcome to join their loved ones for meals.

So what makes The Grove such a special place? For recently appointed manager Amanda Griffiths it’s the excellence of her staff and the contribution of the home’s many dedicated volunteers that makes the difference. “When I arrived one of the nicest surprises I had was the level of the staff commitment to caring” she explains. “And we’re very lucky to have so many volunteers. Many are relatives of past residents who are fond of The Grove and have chosen to keep coming in. It’s that kind of place – somewhere where people build new, happy memories.” “We also positively encourage visitors at any time of day, no need to make an appointment. That’s because we know that this is a good place and we don’t worry at all about surprise visitors.” If you’d like to look around The Grove then feel free to pop in for a chat. You’ll always be made welcome and they’d relish the chance to show you around.

motoring ARE YOU READY FOR THIS YEAR’S BIG FREEZE?

S

evere weather can be both frightening and dangerous for driving but with the right approach, a well maintained vehicle and attention to some basic safety measures you can minimise the risks of winter travel. The first essential step is to take the weather seriously and to drive with caution in icy conditions. Avoid driving if you’re tired. Getting the proper amount of rest between journeys reduces driving risks. If you have to drive then make certain your tires are properly inflated and try to keep your fuel tank at least half full. If possible, avoid using your handbrake in cold, rainy and snowy weather. Most importantly make sure that your vehicle is in good condition before driving in cold conditions. Get it serviced by someone who knows what they’re doing, (you’ll find several suggestions on these pages), and check all the fluids and tyre tread depths.

If you’re forced to undertake a long distance drive make sure to watch the weather reports. Delay your trip if you can if particularly bad weather is expected. If you must travel, let others know your route, destination and estimated time of arrival. Pack a phone and blankets, gloves, hats, food, water and any essential medication. And if the worst comes to the worst and you end up stuck? Well first of all don’t panic. Stay with your vehicle. It provides temporary shelter and makes it easier for rescuers to locate you. Don’t try to walk in a severe storm. It’s easy to lose sight of your vehicle in blowing snow and become lost. Don’t over exert yourself if you try to push or dig your vehicle out of the snow. Tie a brightly coloured cloth to the aerial or place a cloth at the top of a rolled up window to signal distress and make sure the exhaust pipe isn’t clogged with snow, ice or mud. A blocked exhaust could cause deadly carbon monoxide gas to leak into the passenger compartment with the engine running. Use whatever is available to insulate your body from the cold. This could include floor mats, newspapers or paper maps. If possible run the engine and heater just long enough to remove the chill and to conserve fuel.

EXPERT TIPS FOR DRIVING IN THE SNOW •

• • •

Accelerate and decelerate slowly. Don’t let yourself get in a hurry. Take time to slow down for traffic lights. Remember that it takes longer to slow down on icy roads. Drive slowly. Everything takes longer on snow covered roads. Increase the gap you leave between you and the vehicle in front. Don’t stop if you can avoid it. There’s a big difference in the amount of inertia it takes to start moving from a full stop versus how much it takes to get moving while still rolling. Don’t power up hills. Applying extra gas on snow-covered roads just starts your wheels spinning. Try to get a little speed going before you reach the hill and let that carry you to the top. As you reach the crest of the hill, reduce your speed and proceed down hill as slowly as possible. And the best advice of all? Stay home. If you really don’t have to go out, don’t. Even if you can drive well in the snow, not everyone else can. If you don’t have somewhere you have to be, watch the snow from indoors.
