Christmas and New Year are great times for traditions. Chestnuts roasting on an open fire. Grandad falling asleep by the fire after dinner. First footing with a big old lump of coal. And of course fancy dress. Not so long ago it would have been Santas as far as the eye could see, with just a few Rudolphs and a snowman or two thrown in for good measure but nowadays the rule book has been thrown out and you can wear pretty much what you please. So don’t waste any time! Get yourself down to Twinkles and sort out your perfect costume and let’s get the party started!

FAVOURITE BALLETS AT THE AUDITORIUM
T
here’s a fabulous weekend of dance in prospect at the beginning of December when Grimsby Auditorium plays host to two of the world’s best loved ballets - Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker (on Friday 1st) and Swan Lake (Sunday 3rd). Both are directed and choreographed by former Bolshoi Ballet Soloist, Konstantin Uralsky and performed by the company and orchestra of The Russian State Ballet and Opera House. Swan Lake is a tale of two young
women, Odette and Odile, who resemble each other so closely one can easily be mistaken for the other. It’s a tragic romance in which a princess is turned into a swan by an evil curse and captures, like no other ballet, the full range of human emotions – from hope to despair, from terror to tenderness, from melancholy to ecstasy. And of course Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without a trip to your local theatre for a dazzling production of the most famous ballet in the world – The Nutcracker.

LOUTH LONDON DRY GIN AMONG EXOTIC EXHIBITS AT LINCS FOOD & GIFT FAIR
L
overs of exotic gin are in for a festive treat when they attend Lincolnshire Showground’s popular Food & Gift Fair on December 2nd and 3rd 2017. Award winning Pin Gin – a boutique London dry gin lovingly distilled and bottled in Louth – will be at the event for the first time, with visitors invited to try a small taster. Thought to be the first ever gin to be produced commercially in Lincolnshire, Pin Gin was launched by Louth couple Alan Bottomley and Amy Conyard in March. Designed to capture the sights, tastes and smells of the local countryside, their recipe incorporates rose and lavender notes, hints of cucumber, black pepper and citrus, finishing off with liquorice, almonds and cinnamon.
Alan and Amy, who run their business as Bottomley Distillers, are excited to be exhibiting at the fair and are keen to teach people about their gin. Amy said: “It’s a great opportunity to get out there and show off our brand. Making sales would be great but it is also about getting brand awareness and branching out to a different audience.” Pin Gin takes its name from “pin”, as in pine needles, as Alan originally intended to sell Christmas trees as well. Currently producing 200 bottles of gin a week but set to expand, Bottomley Distillers was named producer of the year at the recent Select Lincolnshire Awards 2017 so make sure you stop by their display at the show and get a taste of some quality local spirits.

FALLING IN LOVE WITH LOVE ITSELF The first production of the Caxton’s 75th anniversary year is The Thrill Of Love, a dramatisation of the life of Ruth Ellis, the last woman to be hanged for murder in the United Kingdom. The play tells the story of Ellis’s tempestuous and often violent relationship with her lover, David Blakely, and the incidents which led up to her shooting him in the street outside the Magdala public house in Hampstead. It also features Detective Jack Gale who follows the case from the beginning, hoping to piece together her motive and, more importantly, whom she might be protecting.

Could you run a Ron-a-thon? ALL SET FOR THE MAYOR’S CHALLENGE 2018
A
re you fit enough to face a 12-hour, non-stop exercise challenge in the name of charity? Local Mayor for North East Lincolnshire, Councillor Ron Shepherd, has this week launched his Mayor’s challenge – an annual project set up by the incumbent Mayor to raise money for his or her chosen charities. This year, Councillor Shepherd has chosen to host and take up the challenge of a 12 hour ‘Rona-thon’ of non-stop exercise to raise funds for his charities, Linkage and the Carers Support Service. The challenge, which will run
from 7am to 7pm on Friday 2 April 2018, is open to the public to spectate or join in. The Worshipful, the Mayor of North East Lincolnshire, Councillor Ron Shepherd, said: “I’m really looking forward to this Mayor’s challenge – I think it’ll be a tough one though. I hope that lots of people from all walks of life come along and get involved in any way they can – even if they can only do fifteen minutes or so on a treadmill. It’s all for two good local causes. All people have to do is gather sponsorship and commit to doing a length of time, and then turn up at Grimsby Town Hall on the day and complete their challenge.”
“I would like to thank Lincs Inspire for providing the machines - treadmills, rowing and cycling machines – for the challenge. If anyone wants to host their own Ron-a-thon on the day at a location that suits them, then they are more than welcome to do so, and if possible I will come along and visit and get involved.” To find out more about this year’s Mayor’s Challenge, contact Tracy Frisby or Paul Wisken on 01472 314101 or paul.wisken@ nelincs.gov.uk.

CLEETHORPES FUNDRAISING TEAM PRESENT MONEY FOR THE RESPIRATORY UNIT
A
dedicated fundraiser and her team have raised money for a department close to her heart following an illness that saw her cared for at Grimsby hospital. After receiving care from the respiratory department, Jean Madin and her team of fundraisers presented a cheque to The Health Tree Foundation at Jean’s local pub, The Market Tavern, in Cleethorpes. Jean said: “I have been a patient of Dr Richard Chan’s in respiratory for many years and have had half my right lung removed. I wanted to do something for the department. There’s quite a team of us who do our bit so hopefully we have raised enough to go towards some new equipment.”
Her latest effort has seen Jean raise £600 for the respiratory department with the help of her team, including two young, new members: Jessica Terry-Taylor, aged 18 and Courtney Terry-Taylor, aged 15. Jean also recently raised £1,200 for The Health Tree Foundation’s Rear Into Gear Appeal – a campaign that is raising money for keyhole surgery equipment for patients with bowel cancer or bowel related illnesses at Grimsby and Scunthorpe hospitals. Jean decided she would become a fundraiser after her father passed away in 2004. Shortly after, she moved to Cleethorpes where she has continued fundraising for a number of local causes. Jayne Smith, a close friend of Jean’s, moved to the area around
21
the same time as and got on board with her fundraising. Jayne said: “The team is like one big happy family. I had a break from fundraising but it feels great to be back with everyone again. I really missed it.” Jean added: “We want to continue doing things to help people and we are so lucky we are able to do that living in this area. I cannot thank the people and businesses of Grimsby and Cleethorpes enough. We live in such a generous community.” Community champion for The Health Tree Foundation, Laura Gooderham, said: “Jean’s dedication and determination is to be admired. She has gone through a rough time herself with illnesses and has still continued to raise money to help others – we are very grateful.”

LIGHT UP A LIFE SERVICE AT GRIMSBY MINSTER TO REMEMBER LOVED ONES NO LONGER WITH US
L
ights will shine brightly for loved ones no longer with us at a special ceremony hosted by St Andrew’s Hospice inside Grimsby Minster on Saturday 9th December. Light Up A Life is one of the best loved and most poignant events of the St Andrew’s Hospice calendar and is a chance for families and friends to gather together and remember those we love, who sadly are no longer with us. The event will feature readings, music and quiet time for reflection; there will also be a special reading of a remembrance scroll. It is open to everyone, not just those who have lost someone they love in the hospice. Those making a donation to St Andrew’s Hospice through Light Up A Life, you will be added to our remembrance scroll and will also receive a commemorative card. These donations will allow the Hospice to continue to light up the lives of patients and families at what can be one of the most difficult times of the year. There is no parking at Grimsby Minster, limited street parking is available nearby but there are pay and display car parks near the Minster.

“Making a big change to your sound always involves taking a chance” The Peoples talks to
Jess Clemmons of Jess and The Bandits
Jess Clemmons first came to the attention of British music fans a couple of years ago with the release of Here We Go Again, her debut album with The Bandits and one of the most exciting country rock albums we’ve heard in recent years. Many of the people who now count themselves fans first heard of her when her version of Wichita Lineman was played by DJ Terry Wogan who afterwards declared it to have been even better than the Glen Campbell original. Praise indeed. Since then she’s been a regular visitor to the UK, touring all over the country and winning a large following. Last year her second album, Smoke And Mirrors was released. It was selected as one of the highlights of 2017 by Country Magazine and the lead single “Sister” received extensive airplay from the BBC. She’s back on tour in the UK in February, kicking off at Fruit in Hull on February 6th and if you’re a fan of top notch country music then we’d highly recommend a trip to the north bank to catch the show. We got to talk to Jess about music, marriage and the perspicacity of small dogs and we started by asking about the distinctive change of sound on the material on the new album. IDP: Let me start by congratulating you on Smoke And Mirrors. I’ve been listening to it for a couple of weeks now and it’s an excellent thing. It has a distinctly different sound to Here We Go Again. A little less country rock, a little more pop and gospel. Was this a deliberate decision or did it just happen, like a natural progression? JC: It was absolutely deliberate. The last thing that we ever want to do is to try to recreate something we’ve already done. There’s a kind of “if it ain’t
26
MUSIC
broke don’t fix” it trap and some performers and bands fall right into it. It’s easier but it also means that you don’t grow as an artist and you don’t give the audience something new. Making a big change to your sound involves taking a chance and that’s why we spent a whole year working on the songs for the new album to try to get the best of both worlds - still recognisably the established Jess And The Bandits sound but with plenty of the new in there as well. IDP: Did it feel like a risk?
“The last thing that we ever want to do is to try to recreate something we’ve already done.”
JC: Well there were certainly lots of times when I was in panic mode because much of this was so different from anything we’d done before but that was mostly before before I’d really started living with these songs, sharing them with friends and colleagues. Gradually it came to feel less strange. I would take the old album and choose a song to play at random and then I’d play one of the new ones and I came to realise that there was a coherence between the songs - a big similarity in the body of work which is exactly what you want. I wanted to find a way to tie all the songs together because when you’re in a club playing live you don’t want it to sound like you’re performing songs that don’t belong together. So I’m really glad that I went with my gut and that my management team supported me and I decided to take a risk and go for it.
IDP: There’s a lot of gospel influence on the album. Is that something that you grew up with? You seem to drop into the groove very easily. JC: I did grow up singing in the choir and the gospel feel as always been a part of me. It used to hurt that whenever I would get a solo in church I was always given the gospel part and I used to say “I want to sing the pretty little songs” but soon I decided that I’d embrace it. When I decided to use the gospel sound on the new album it felt really good because I felt I was getting back touch with the gospel tradition within myself that I had not made use of for a long time. It was like I was going back to my roots and to being a little girl again. IDP: There’s an extensive list of writers who contributed to the album, many of them working with you as co-writers. Do you enjoy collaboration? JC: I love it and I got to work with some fantastic writers on Smoke And Mirrors. Femke Weidema, who co-wrote Sister, is actually the producer of the album and it’s great to work with a producer who is also a songwriter because you can see a song go from it’s very beginnings to being almost complete in just a few hours. Having her as a producer with such gave me such an advantage. And there’s Emily Shackleton as well. She wrote Every Little Thing which was a big hit for Carly Pearce and she’s fantastic to work with. IDP: So you work in Nashville but you live in Houston? JC: I’m in Houston now and I think I have been here for longer than I’ve ever been but I’ve taken full advantage of the downtime including getting married. I’m Mrs Peavey now. I’m getting used to that but it still feels a bit weird writing it down. I’ll get used to that soon. IDP: I understand that your dog told you that he was the right one. JC: Unfortunately my puppy died a couple of months ago but he was always very protective about who was around me. He was just a little dog but he was one of those little dogs who think they’re very big dogs. But when Chris was around he would just cuddle right up and I thought that if I hadn’t already figured out that he was the one then maybe I should just pay attention to the dog.

IDP: I think you were also hit by hurricane Harvey. JC: Oh yes that was precisely why we had to postpone the UK tour last year. It was scheduled and I had been in the UK for a month getting ready and everything was all set and then I got the word that my parents home and been severely affected. It was the worst thing I’ve ever witnessed especially from thousands of miles away. I spoke to my mum and she said “Do what you have to do” but I could have hear the pain in her voice so I asked “Do you want me to come home” and she just burst into tears and said “Yes”. I said “Right I’m going home, people will understand.” She’s okay now. She’s back in the house and it’s coming together slowly. They don’t have a kitchen yet but they do have a bedroom and a bathroom. IDP: You also issued an the old fashioned Christmas CD which has lots of UK country performers on it and a song by Gary Quinn. What do you think of the current UK country scene? JC: I’m a big fan. I’ve been touring the UK since 2016 and I’ve seen the the country scene develop so fast. I love the way a lot of UK country artists are using their own heritage to make authentic British country music. It’s not just a question of copying the US music anymore. IDP: Are we expecting a mixture of new material and old when the tour comes round? JC: Absolutely. It’s good to be starting in Hull because Fruit is an excellent vene and we’re hoping for a good crowd. I’ll try and put in the songs that people really love plus some from the new album and hopefully people will have had time to get to learn some of them and sing along. IDP: I’m sure they will. have a great tour and we’ll look forward to seeing you in Hull.

COLLABRO AND THEIR GUESTS BRING THE MAGIC OF THE MUSICALS TO THE AUDITORIUM
A
packed house was treated to a fantastic evening of music and song on Tuesday night at Grimsby Auditorium as Britain’s Got Talent Winners and multi platinum album sellers Collabro and their guests came to town. Opening the show was Sheffield born gospel country singer Philippa Hanna whose set showcased the songwriting and vocal skills which have taken her to the top of the UK gospel charts. Highlights of her set were I Am Amazing, taken from her 2016 album Come Back Fighting, which allowed her to show her marvellously fluid voice to maximum effect and Arrow which

has a great up-beat Country vibe and an inspirational message well suited to her Christian background. Collabro are everyone’s favourite masters of the big show tune that goes like this, starts off soft and low, and ends up with a kiss and this evening they delivered a masterclass in showmanship with a fine six piece band, elegant staging and costumes and a setlist that ranged from Les Miserables to Miss Saigon taking in Wicked, The Lion King, Phantom and lots of other modern musical theatre favourites on the way as well as pop hits like the Mumfords’ I Will Wait and a lively Don’t Rain On My Parade. Their main set ended with Stars, the tune which first brought them to our attention and then we were treated to a fantastic encore which climaxed with a crimson jacketed December 1963 (Oh What A Night) that had the audience up on its feet and dancing to the Jersey Boys classic. The nicest surprise of the evening was Collabro’s special guest, Mansfield born Carly Paoli who is one of those fortunate artists whose talent allows them to excel across genres. She has a cool precision that’s well suited to the classical repertoire but also the emotional expressiveness required for musical theatre. Having fallen in love with the classic film musicals at home she studied at the Royal Northern College of Music and she’s certainly a performer whose star is on the rise, having duetted with Jose Carreras and Placido Domingo and had one of her own songs, Ave Maria, selected by the Vatican as the official song for Pope Francis’ Jubilee Year of Mercy. She first appeared to join Collabro for a stunning Over The Rainbow and then treated us to a selection of tunes from her recently released debut album Singing My Dreams. She’s due to headline a show at the Cadogan Hall in London on February 15th 2018 – and it promises to be a great show at one of the most famous venues in the capital. Not bad for a little girl from Mansfield who fell in love with the magic of the great MGM musicals and never looked back! We’re sure that we’ll be seeing a lot more of her in the future!

A FITTING TRIBUTE TO THOSE WHO HAVE HELPED MAKE GRIMSBY ‘GREAT’ The new Cartergate Underpass mural is unveiled to the public
A
rtists, councillors and representatives of many of the area’s most illustrious names gathered in Top Town to celebrate the official unveiling of the new Cartergate underpass mural. It’s the work of Creative Start volunteers led by founder and organiser Sam Delaney. Many of those involved have never participated in an arts project before and some took part as an element of a programme of abstinence therapy. The design features famous faces from the area including motorcyclist Freddie Frith, Channel swimmer Brenda Fisher, top tennis player Shirley Brasher, motorcycle racer Guy Martin, dancers Kevin and Joanne Clifton, actor Sir John Hurt and players from Grimsby Town FC. There are also street scenes from the Top Town area including the Minster and 1940s Chantry Lane. The artwork certainly makes a huge difference to what has been, in the past, a somewhat neglected part of the town and it’s yet another step along the road to the renewal of the Cartergate area. If you’re not a regular user we’d certainly recommend taking a visit to admire the mural, especially while there are still pieces from the recent Urban Arts Festival to enjoy on the walls of St James House. The Lincolnshire Food & Gift Fair is open from 9am to 4pm on 2nd and 3rd December 2017 at the Lincolnshire Showground and visitors will have access to free parking. he words of Ruth Ellis to the off duty policeman who arrested her outside The Magdala pub in April 1955 after she had used a revolver to kill her lover David Blakely. The crime is played out in the opening scene of The Thrill Of Love by Amanda Whittington, which retells the story of the last woman to be executed in Britain. As post war austerity draws to an end the private clubs of Soho and Knightsbridge are full of well to do punters and there is always a place for a good looking hostess. It’s a world of seedy glamour, of fast cars, strong drink and seamed stockings and the new production at The Caxtons recreates that world to remarkable effect on a stripped back stage painted prison grey and with the shadow of window bars cast over the set. There are only a few pieces of spartan furniture on stage, emphasising the similarities between the tawdry clubs around which the action plays out, the spartan bedsit in which Ellis miscarries, having been punched in the stomach by Blakely, and the condemned cell at Holloway (just pull the wardrobe aside to reveal the door to the gallows chamber). The play investigates the damage that love can do and the suffering that some people are prepared to endure in its name. A crackly recording of Billy Holiday sets the scene and Chloey Rose as Ruth Ellis brings just the right mixture of brass and vulnerability to her portrayal of Ruth, a small town girl from North Wales who has spent the war dancing every night and hopes to move into the glittering world of British film celebrity like her idol Diana Dors. Drawn inexorably to men who will do her harm she seems to be marked for victimhood from the start and although the play unquestionably doubts whether or not she should have died as she did it does not make her out to be a heroine or a martyr. She’s a severely damaged person, incapable of pulling herself back from the brink, as frustrating to Ruairidh Greig’s dogged, down to earth police detective as she is to her friends. Greig’s old school copper is an omnipresent narrator/character, moving serenely through flashbacks, questioning Ellis to try to discover the truth, (particularly about exactly where she acquired the gun) and persuade her to co-operate with the many appeals for clemency launched on her behalf by others. She gives him short shrift almost to the end, by which time it’s too late. There’s fantastic support from the three actresses who play Ellis’s friends, Marie Barker as the hard as nails and heart of gold Sylvia Shaw, Louise Blakey as comrade in arms Vickie Martin and Claire Wright as charlady and good girl Doris Judd and under the direction of Cathy Bennett-Ryan they effectively summon up the spirit of an era long before #MeToo, when casual violence against women was part of everyday life. After a run of comedies it’s nice to see the Caxtons taking on a more serious piece of theatre for a change and we’d highly recommend a visit.

ROLAND GIFT BRINGS CLASSIC 80s POP TO THE WELLY FOR A GREAT HOMETOWN GIG
T
his was the first club I ever went in, back in the days when I was underage. We all were. The club in question is the Welly on Beverley Road in Hull and the speaker is Roland Gift, formerly of the Fine Young Cannibals and here tonight for a solo gig in his former home town. Judging by the warmth of the reception he gets there are plenty of people here with fond memories of the venue and of the era and of Roland himself. The place is pretty well packed and the temperature at the front is terrifying. The Welly has ridden out the Year of Culture urge to gentrify and is still doing what it’s supposed to - being a proper old fashioned sweatbox rock and roll venue - one of a dying breed these days. Gift is a very cool performer, chatting with the audience (many of whom he seems to recognise) about the City Of Culture bunfight, and sipping tea between songs. He arrives on stage in a white kurta and blazer combo with a ballpoint pen clipped in the top pocket, in case inspiration should strike or he feels the need to take any names. There’s a sly air of mischief about him and he’s happy not to take himself too seriously, pausing the show half way through to draw a raffle for a huge bag of meat (including a nice rack of ribs and some venison sausages) into which everyone who has made a purchase at the merch desk has been entered. There is of course a meat free option it’s a 5lb bag of potatoes. I guess you don’t get that many vegetarian cannibals. Time has done remarkably little to his vocal and the trademark effortless falsetto is still in fine order and the set is a crowd pleaser, taking in all the hits, but it’s the variety of the Cannibals output that is most striking. Until this gig I hadn’t revisited the Fine Young Cannibals or The Raw And The Cooked (did they really only make two) albums for some time and it’s amazing how fresh they sound today and tucked in among the tunes we all remember (like She Drives Me Crazy and Johnny Come Home) are several that have slipped my mind and come back fresh and shiny as new, in particular covers of Suspicious Minds and The Buzzcocks’ Ever Fallen In Love, reminders of an era when UK pop music hadn’t been consumed by posh boys and girls and we were all under age, at least for a while.

ECONOMY
Greater Grimsby Heritage Action Zone promises a kickstart for local economic regeneration
P
lans for the regeneration of local economy recieved a boost this week when Minister for Arts, Heritage and Tourism, John Glen announced that Grimsby has been designated a Heritage Action Zone. The Zone will give historic dock buildings, former smokehouses, factories and shops a new lease of life, creating jobs and stimulating appreciation of Grimsby’s heritage. The Grimsby Heritage Action Zone is being led by NE Lincolnshire Council. Working with Associated British Ports it will unlock a transformation of the Kasbah, where the designation of a new Conservation Area has recently recognised the importance of historic smokehouses and other buildings associated with the fishing industry. The programme also aims to reconnect the town centre with the port by promoting use of historic buildings along Alexandra Dock, including Victoria Mills, where the Council recently spent more than £2 million on urgent repairs. Louise Brennan, Planning Director for Historic England in the East Midlands, said of the decision: “Few places in England have as distinctive a heritage as Grimsby, and few have so much to gain from it. Grimsby holds a unique place in our history as a seafaring nation, and the evidence can still be seen in abundance in historic buildings like those in the Kasbah. These places are not only symbols of the past but opportunities for the
future. With a little imagination and investment, Grimsby’s heritage is poised to release new economic vitality and pride in the town." Councillor Peter Wheatley, portfolio holder for regeneration agreed and welcomed the announcement, commenting: “This is welcome news and is a significant part of the wider Town Deal we have been working with central government and partners on. Grimsby is changing with the new industries we are seeing in the town and pulling all the strands of work together will help to truly transform the economic outlook for the town. Lots of pieces of the jigsaw are finally beginning to come together. That takes hard work and dedication – it’s not by any stretch of the imagination a quick process. Now we need to deliver the projects with our local communities and our partners to realise Grimsby’s full potential and make sure that the town’s character and heritage will truly benefit the area.” Simon Bird, Port Director Humber at ABP added: “This announcement is another huge step forward in breathing new life into the Kasbah which is already part of a thriving port. Regeneration of the Kasbah area has come to symbolise the special partnership approach that we have adopted with NE Lincolnshire Council, and we look forward to working with them and with Historic England to spearhead a programme of economic regeneration for the future.”
“These places are not only symbols of the past but also opportunities for the future.”

ALL SYSTEMS GO! ENTRIES OPEN FOR THE 2018 ØRSTED GREAT GRIMSBY 10K
I
t’s time for keen local runners to mark one of the most important days of the year into their diaries because entries have opened for the third running of the Ørsted Great Grimsby 10k on 22nd July 2018. Next year’s race will be bigger than ever after race organisers Tape2Tape upped the entry limit to 5,000, so even more runners can participate. The first running of the DONG Energy Great Grimsby 10k happened in July 2016 (which is when our pictures are from), thanks to a collaboration between North East Lincolnshire Council, partners from the public sector, race organisers Tape2Tape and some of the town’s best known businesses. Last year’s race saw nearly 3,000 people cheered on by big crowds as they made their way around the course from near Grimsby Town Hall to People’s Park. The race has a fresh look for 2018 after the headline sponsor, DONG Energy, changed its name to Ørsted. The company is now entirely focussed on green energy and the new name is inspired by the curiosity, dedication and interest in nature of one of Denmark’s best known scientists, Hans Christian Ørsted. Race directors Nicola and Neil Pattison commented: “The Ørsted Great Grimsby 10k has grown beyond all our expectations and that’s down to the commitment of the hundreds of people it takes to stage an event like this. We’d like to thank everyone, from sponsors to the army of volunteers and supporters, who have helped make the race a huge success. We’ve made some changes to the start and finish arrangements so we can give more people the chance to experience what a superb event this is.” Cllr Jane Hyldon-King, portfolio holder for health and wellbeing at the Council, added: “I had a brilliant time at the race this summer and it was good to see so many people from local disability groups in the fun run. Great Grimsby really did itself proud and I look forward to seeing everyone on the start line in 2018.” Runners will follow a flat course starting near Grimsby Town Hall, heading to Nun’s Corner, through Scartho towards New Waltham before returning to Grimsby via Peaks Parkway and finishing in People’s Park. Entry fees have been kept low thanks to the generosity of sponsors, so far including Ørsted, North East Lincolnshire Council, Young’s Seafood, Associated British Ports (ABP), North East Lincolnshire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), Wilkin Chapman LLP, HMT St Hugh’s Hospital and ENGIE and places are filling up fast so don’t hang around - get your entry in as soon as possible! You can enter at www.greatgrimsby10k.com for just £13 for affiliated running club members and £15 for unaffiliated.

LOVE TO WALK? WHY NOT TRY A TREK FOR MARIE CURIE IN 2018?
A
t this time of year it’s traditional to overestimate our resources of grit and determination and to make promises that we can’t keep about our future virtue, but this year why not put the new into your New Year’s resolutions and inspire yourself by setting a different kind of goal for 2018 that will support Marie Curie and increase your fitness levels at the same time by signing up to take part in one of their amazing treks! Marie Curie treks are a fantastic way to see the places you never imagined you could! From the picturesque views of Great Wall of China to the glorious setting of the Peak District – there really is an experience for everyone. Marie Curie treks are designed to provide participants with an enormous sense of achievement, new friendships and the opportunity to raise serious sponsorship for your local Marie Curie services. With a little training a trek can be within everyone’s capabilities and it truly is the experience of a lifetime. Marie Curie Community Fundraiser Lauren Alexander is on the lookout for people interested in taking on a new challenge for 2018, saying: “Not only will you feel the buzz the outdoors but, by taking part in a sponsored trek, you will also be enabling Marie Curie to continue caring for people living with a terminal illness, and their loved one through the local Marie Curie nursing service. In Lincolnshire, we have over 85 nurses and this is thanks to members of the public for helping us to fund them each year.” Your Marie Curie trek place includes training guides to help you get going, a fundraising pack, a Marie Curie T-shirt and also access to a private Facebook group just for your trek so you can chat with fellow trekkers beforehand, sharing tips and training stories along the way. If you are up for the challenge, please contact your local Community Fundraiser, Lauren on 07525 80531 or lauren. alexander@mariecurie.org.uk. Business Round Up Well that’s another good year gone and hopefully an even better one on the way. We’ve been to some fantastic places and events, met some fascinating people, seen some great shows and heard some terrific music. But most importantly we’ve met some of the most innovative and dedicated business people in the area, people who we’re proud to call both advertisers and friends. So here are a few of our favourites from 2017 and we’re looking forward to seeing them again and making new friends in the year to come! the

t’s every cyclist’s worse nightmare - going back to where you left your bike only to find that it has been stolen but now a local partnership is taking the fight to the bike thieves in North East Lincolnshire by offering bicycle owners the chance to swap their old locks for a brand new one. Cyclists in need of a new lock can trade in their old lock at the Cycle Hub at Grimsby Railway Station and receive a new, Gold Standard Sold Secure D-lock (worth £40) at a heavily discounted price of £10. Lockswap runs from Tuesday 2nd January to Saturday 3rd February. Janine Walker, Managing Director of the Cycle Hub, said: “It’s great to team up with the Council
and ENGIE to be able to offer these Gold Standard Sold Secure D-locks during January to make this offer. Our main aim is to keep the community cycling and help people to keep their bikes safe and secure. Ladies Of The Blues AT LINCOLN ALIVE
Local blues enthusiasts are in for a very special treat, when the Ladies Of The Blues Tour, featuring the combined talents of Connie Lush, Kyla Brox and Erja Lyytinen arrives at Alive in Lincoln on Saturday 24th March, the fourth show of their tour and it’s going to be a very special night indeed because these are some of the most acclaimed female vocalists in the world and they’re all at the very top of their game.
Connie Lush
Connie grew up in Liverpool and was singing in her church and school choirs from the age of five. Regarded as one of the finest blues singers in the UK, five times winner of best UK vocalist and twice European Blues vocalist of the year, she has performed at some of Europe’s most prestigious festivals, wowed audiences from Moscow to LA and toured the UK with the late, great BB King culminating in an unforgettable night at the Royal Albert Hall. Twenty years into her award winning career, entertaining audiences in thirty countries throughout the world, Connie Lush has arrived at a new beginning. As BB King said “That woman makes my heart sing”.
Kyla Brox
Born in Lancashire in 1980 and introduced to the passion of AfroAmerican music at first hand by her blues singing father, Victor, Kyla’s voice is a stunning example of the soul singer’s art: turning up the heat by degrees, lulling and charming before unleashing emotional catharsis, and blurring the distinction between pleasure and pain like the soul greats of old. Whether fronting the mighty Kyla Brox Band, or harnessing undiluted soul power in a duo with musical and life partner Danny Blomeley, Kyla is without doubt the most authentic UK blues and soul singer of her generation. You can have a look and listen to Kyla on YouTube singing “If You See Him” and other great tracks.
Erja Lyytinen
Erja was born in Finland and quickly emerged as an artist to watch in her native country. Since first setting foot in a recording studio she has become a bona fide star in her homeland and a celebrated fixture on the international music scene. She has recorded nine studio albums in locations as diverse as Helsinki, Memphis and Clarksdale, Mississippi, earning numerous awards and honours along the way. Erja is equally at home in traditional and modern blues and has never been afraid to incorporate jazz, pop and soul elements into her work. Erja was described by City Life as “an authentic soul diva … sensitive, sexy and with infinite reserves of sassiness”.
Lincoln Alive is located at 22 Newland, Lincoln, Lincolnshire LN1 1XD Advance tickets are £18.00 + bf and can be purchased by calling 01472 349 222 or online at www.solidentertainments.com

MOTORING
surprise - so it’s time for our annual reminder to get your car checked out - either by yourself or by a professional (see page right for our favourites). And if the weather turns nasty and you’ve got no choice but to drive? Well there are some basic precautions you can take that will help to keep you as safe as possible. Check your lights, mirrors and windows are completely clear before you set off. Visibility is crucial. Top your screen wash up and use a proper additive. Check the latest traffic and travel information before setting off on long journeys to help avoid getting stranded in freezing conditions. Stock up for emergencies and long delays in cold weather. Prepare a kit with basic items such as coats, blankets, water, food, atlas or satnav and a torch. Also remember to keep a fully-charged mobile phone and in-car charger to report breakdowns and emergencies if necessary. Wear comfortable, dry shoes for driving. Cumbersome, snow covered boots will slip on the pedals. Check your tyres for adequate tread
and correct pressures. Ensure that your radiator has the right anti freeze levels. Check your manual to find out whether you’re in need of a top up. Keep at least a quarter of a tank of fuel at all times to avoid running out if caught in long delays in bad weather. Use an ice scraper and/or de-icer spray to clear a frozen windscreen rather than using hot water, which
can crack the windscreen. Use the blowers and air conditioning to clear condensation on the inside. When driving in snow, use a high gear to avoid wheel spin. If stuck, keep the wheels straight and move forwards and backwards gently to get traction. Take care, stay warm and just try to remember that it’s only for six months or so.
