WELCOME TO WELLOWGATE

Wellowgate Throughout history Wellowgate has been one of the most important streets in the borough of Grimsby. It was a key economic thoroughfare in mediaeval times - the original route between the town centre and Welholme Abbey and played a vital part in the Victorian railway boom which created the conditions for the rise of the fishing industry. Recent years may have seen the street looking a little below its best but there has been a quiet process of urban renewal going on as new shops have opened, bringing a new style of high quality boutique retail to the Top Town area. We asked Sue Almond of Home Is Where The Heart Is to fill us in on some of the reasons why shoppers should start adding Wellowgate businesses to their favourites lists.

Wellowgate has been one of the town’s best kept secrets for a while now but it has seen some big changes recently. Do you think this could be Wellowgate’s moment to step out of the shadow of Top Town? We’re certainly hoping so. The new hotel development should make people notice the street again - we’re so much more than just a quick route into town. It’s become a fabulous little shopping area with something for everyone and it’s so easy to park, with masses of space on Duchess Street. We think that makes Wellowgate the ideal place to start your shopping trip - without having to use the nightmare multi-storeys. It’s only a short distance to the market and Freshney Place. What does Wellowgate have to offer that makes it worth a detour from Top Town? There’s a lovely choice of great little shops, all independents, all selling products that will be hard to find anywhere else in town or offering top quality services. From retro fashion to gifts, from jewellery to homewares, not forgetting high end body art and tattoo removal. There’s also Jennies, one of the best tea rooms in town too so you can take the weight off your feet and grab a cup of tea and some superb cake in wonderfully retro surroundings. It always seems like a welcoming street. What’s the secret to creating spaces that people can enjoy shopping in? The most important thing is the Wellowgate businesses are all run by nice people who love what they do and are enthusiasts for the products they sell. So they’ll always be glad to welcome people into their premises, not just because they are potential customers but also because they take a pride in what they do and they like people to see it. Most of us also have a strong online presence but it’s the face to face interactions, the showing off what we do, that makes running a Wellowgate business a real pleasure.
