Shifts in Responsibility Require New Skills No longer the “office worker” of yester-
year, today’s administrative professionals must be multi-skilled, versatile and ready to adapt to new responsibilities and nontraditional roles.
Traditional clerical skills are still valued and utilized on the job, but it’s not uncommon for today’s administrative professional to have responsibility for project management, while also serving as the office tech front line support and managing significant financial responsibility. “In today’s business, administrators are taking on roles more similar to a management-level employee. In addition to their clerical and office management skills, they are required to manage budgets, give business presentations, be innovative with business solutions, and are more frequently required to have some type of a college degree,” says Lisa Luckey, an administrator with consumer goods giant Procter & Gamble.
attendees’ purchasing responsibility across all categories, including approval and authorization, nearly doubled from 2008 to 2013. “Having strong business management and project management skills seem to be the direction more roles are moving towards,” says Jeni Tocol, a business administrator at Microsoft, the world’s largest computer software maker. The new realities of business and new roles for administrative professionals make it important for your company to invest in you by sending you to the APC in October. You’ll leave with the tools and techniques required to achieve optimal productivity. You’ll get the new skills, best practices, and resouack at the office. Looking forward to seeing you there!

Inspiring Keynotes
Cheryl Strayed “A Wild Life” In her memoir, Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail, New York Times best-selling author Cheryl Strayed describes the sometimes harrowing, often hilarious stories, behind her 1100-mile wilderness trek, undertaken alone and with little preparation—a challenge she took on to save herself. At age 22, Strayed found herself shattered by two major life events: her mother’s sudden death from cancer and the end of her marriage. Looking for peace and stability, she confronted the wild and herself, ultimately finding transcendence, hope, and healing. In a message we can all learn from, Cheryl shares what she learned about how we bear the unbearable, how we move from grief and anger to acceptance, and how we keep walking even when it seems impossible to stand.

Four Steps to Success
How to Make Time for Professional Development Is a demanding work schedule holding you back from taking steps to grow the skills and knowledge that you need for your professional development? Here are four practical suggestions for finding time to take a class, join a professional group, or attend a conference or workshop. 1. Identify your learning goals. For instance, if speaking in public gives you the willies, but you’re periodically tapped to address groups, you have to find a way to face your fears and overcome them, typically by taking a class. 2. Look into the avenues open to you to help you achieve your goals. There are many types of professional development, from in-person and online classes to professional conferences. 3. Dedicate time every day to pursue your professional development plan. You might consider arriving at work an hour early so you’re free to leave in time to attend an after-hours class, lecture or event. Or, you might stay an hour later, when it’s quiet, to can take an online training session. Perhaps you can commandeer an empty office during your lunch hour to do the same. Other strategies for freeing up “extra” time: delegate secondary tasks whenever possible. Use short periods of free time, for example, before a meeting starts, or at home, in the morning, before anyone else is awake. You may be surprised to discover that smaller stretches of time may be as useful to you as large chunks. 4. Have a co-worker, mentor, or friend hold you accountable for progress. Check in with that person on a regular basis. Or, take a class with a co-worker. This will give you a chance to discuss the course content and both of you will deepen your understanding.

Post-Conference Workshops Wednesday, October 7, 2015
Half-Day Workshops 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm W5 - Optimizing the Boss/Assistant Partnership Lorinda Lewis, President, Corporate Consulting and Training As roles evolve, admins are increasingly working with management as part of the team, as opposed to simply acting as support staff who take direction. Managers today often see the assistant as confidante, sounding board, adviser, booster, gatekeeper, and partner. Examine the four elements that effective partnerships are based on. Learn how to see things through the boss’s eyes and align your interests, objectives, and style with theirs. Get techniques for solving problems and confronting differences productively. And understand why confidence in yourself and your contributions is critical.
W6 - 5 Easy Ways Communication Can Boost Your Career Pamela Green, SPHR, ACC, Chief Engagement Officer, PPI, LLC Many people think that doing good work is the key to career success. While it may get you noticed, your interpersonal skills (or lack thereof ) are more likely to determine success. If you want to be at the front of the line for special projects and new opportunities, take your skills to the next level in this engaging, informative Workshop. Learn how to design and implement a more effective communication strategy tailored to you and your organization. Identify communication pitfalls that create career barriers. Take an in-depth look at proven communication methods that you can use right away.
W7 - Hindsight, Foresight, and Insight: Maximize Your Impact with Critical Thinking Sandy Geroux, CEO, WOWplace International, LLC Want to be someone who can “read people’s minds,” anticipate and prevent problems, recover quickly, and find fast solutions? As admins, we usually think reactively, tactically, and logistically in order to solve problems and handle the details thrown at us daily. We must also develop the ability to think as strategically and proactively as the executives we serve. Train your mind to analyze experiences and apply new learning. Get tools for creating foresight by maximizing what you’ve learned and applying it to reallife situations. Develop insight by practicing and polishing critical thinking skills that move you from being “believed” to being “believed in.”
10 Important Benefits
Your Job Has Evolved, But Has Your Training Kept Pace? Whether you’re an admin or executive assistant, office manager or support staffer, your job has evolved. The question is: Has your training kept up with your expanding responsibilities? You probably handle countless demands: supporting multiple managers; coordinating work flow; juggling projects; overseeing office tech support; supervising budgets; even training, managing (and/or hiring), other admins. In short, you’re more challenged—and stretched thinner—than ever before. Here are 10 reasons why it’s essential that you keep up with your training: 1. Stay abreast of industry standards. 2. Delegate more efficiently and effectively. 3. Tune-up your verbal and written communication skills. 4. Keep current on databases, word processing, graphics, publishing and presentation programs. 5. Learn the best ways to prepare budgets and expense reports—for yourself, your department, your boss. 6. Discover how to get more done in less time. 7. Learn from the experience of others; i.e., gain new ideas that you can bring back to work. 8. Hone interpersonal skills, including conflict resolution and persuasion. 9. Better manage multiple projects (and bosses). 10. Get required CEU’s for certification. These are just a few of the benefits of training. And the more skilled you become, the better your chances to thrive in your current job, and to advance to higher positions with a commensurate salary. What’s more, you’ll gain greater respect and credibility from those you work with and report to, and stay energized in your job.
