NEW PRODUCT SHOWCASE

RUN THE INDIE 5K AT LIONS MUNICIPAL GOLF COURSE

See you next year! The Running Event will be returning to Austin December 1-3, 2020, so mark your calendars and get ready to join us for another stellar year!

To Our Running Retail Partners, It’s time to clear the air and offer you a fresh perspective on Polar. Most of you know me but for those who don’t, I’ve been in the running industry for 40 years. I owned and operated my own store, Stansport, in Rockaway, NJ and worked in retail for 13 years. I coached the high school’s track team and was the Race Director for the local 5k. I lived that life and understand how important the specialty channel is. I’ll be the first to admit that, during the Fitbit revolution, Polar abandoned run specialty. That was a big mistake. Every account I talk to tells me a similar story. That the “old” Polar was plagued with overdistribution, no MAP price enforcement, obsession with big box retail, and zero support for grassroots. Sounds a lot like some of our competitors today. Polar is a very different company now. We have cleaned up our distribution, which is now tight and controlled. We got out of the big box stores. We have strict MAP policies and my team enforces them daily. And Polar continues to innovate and lead with true technological advancements in running power and gold standard heart rate measurement. In the 3+ years I’ve been with Polar, we’ve gotten our focus back on the heart of running. Specifically, focusing on run specialty and giving back to the sport we love. Polar is the only wearable tech brand that meaningfully supports the run community at a grassroots level. We sponsor multiple running and track clubs across the country, we have a team of passionate Polar Ambassadors from coast to coast, and I would challenge any brand to put their roster of elite athletes against ours. There is a reason that all these running clubs and elite athletes trust Polar. It’s called performance. These athletes who train hard day in and day out choose Polar because our product performs. It guides their training and helps them win. We know that there are strong brands out there. We know that many customers come to your store and ask for Garmin. But specialty means that you can’t find it everywhere, that’s why it’s special. It makes sense to have something different, something technically superior, to offer that discerning customer who actually values your advice. When I decided to write this letter, I chose the word “partner” for a reason. You are our partners, not our customers. Polar listens to our partners and we want to work with you. So, take another look at Polar from a fresh perspective. Let me introduce you to the “new” Polar of today. Come meet me at TRE, I’ll be in Polar’s booth (#916). I look forward to talking to you.

Sincerely,

Stan Brajer Sr. VP of Sales and Marketing, Polar USA

EDUCATION

The 2019 conference sessions at TRE are scheduled to cover the categories you want to hear more about. Each room will have three different sessions featuring educational content led by expert speakers on the following topics:

MARKETING

Take a deeper dive into consumer marketing with great sessions on the power of a good review and social media tips and tricks.

EMPLOYEE RELATIONS Good help can be hard to find and even harder to keep. Attend our sessions on employee relations and learn more about “building a strong bench,” “job function vs. essence” and even creating a retirement plan for your business that will attract and retain good employees.

MERCHANDISING

Join Holly Wiese, from 3 Dots Design, in one or all three of her sessions on merchandising. Learn all about how to display your challenging products so they sell or how to nail your store layout and traffic flow. If you attend all three sessions, you’ll walk away with merchandising certification.

SPEED NETWORKING Speed Networking will take place in two different breakout rooms, each room with eight different vendors. The same eight vendors will remain in their designated room for two 45-minute time slots, which means you have the chance to meet with a total of 16 different brands before the trade show floor even opens!

SPONSORED EDUCATION

The sponsored sessions will not be your average demo presentation. These sessions will help you educate your customer on the value of things like the Power of Running Power and Everything they Need to Know about Taping.

DON’T MISS A SINGLE MINUTE OF LEARNING Bring more people from your store to cover it all! When you register for an AllAccess or Retailer Pass, make sure to sign up your whole team at the same time. Each of your “buddies” will receive discounted pricing on their passes.

Owner, Pacers Running and Host of Pace the Nation podcast

Panelists: ELLEN BRENNER VP/CFO, Fleet Feet Buffalo & Yellow Jacket Racing

JOSH LEVINSON Owner, Charm City Run Many people think the second running boom started in the mid-90s. Not coincidentally a lot of running stores started shortly thereafter in the early 2000s. This discussion will explore important questions addressing this very topic, such as: • W hat is the story of a successful running store over the years? ow are stores navigating the changing, • H increasingly competitive retail landscape? • H ow are stores balancing their event business with retail? • H ow are stores attracting and retaining good employees in today’s competitive labor market? • W hat is the value of your business – not just financial value, but personal value, value to your communities and to your staff?

EDUCATION

There are lots of new things in store at The Running Event this year, including a day dedicated just to race directors and event managers. So, getting your Race Director pass means you’ll have all day Wednesday to connect and share ideas with your fellow planners. And the best part? Our friends at BibRave have curated some exciting educational content – just for you.

Memorable Event Experiences: Unlocking Race and Brand Opportunities Moderator: Chris Heuisler, Global Run Concierge, RunWestin Panelist: Matt Weiss, Director of Marketing - Retail, Events, Sports Marketing, Brooks

Experience is currency. Races and brands have a unique opportunity to create memorable experiences for runners and participants during an extended, emotionally charged moment in that person’s life. But to stand out from the competition, we need to move beyond table stakes. Beer and bands, post-race parties and big medals are available at just about any race. What are you doing to reimagine (versus replicate) what a memorable experience entails?

Leveraging Connected Fitness Moderator: Jeff Dengate, Chief Running Enthusiast, Runner’s World Panelists: Christine Burke, SVP Strategic Partnerships & Runner Products, NYRR David Lorsch, VP Strategy and Business Development, Strava Mike McCarthy, VP of Running, Zwift

Virtual and digital experiences and platforms have popped up left and right. In this panel you’ll learn more about the trend and how races and brands can leverage connected fitness opportunities to extend your brand to consumers across the country and globe. We’ll

also discuss ways you can use these platforms to broaden the reach for your sponsors and partners, ultimately increasing the value of your event.

Building REAL Community: The Intersection of Digital and Local Moderator: Jessica Murphy, Co-Founder of BibRave Panelists: Ryan Conrad, Director of Sponsorships, J&A Racing

Social media has changed the way we connect with tribes across the country and the world. But, IRL still matters, and authenticity is king across channels. We’ll discuss ways to balance the right mix of communitybuilding digitally and locally, while maintaining genuine connection. We’ll also discuss the difference between having customers and having community, and why the difference matters to your bottom line.

Beyond Recycling at Your Event Presented by:

Recycling is still an important part of any organization’s environmental impact assessment, but recent geopolitical changes have shown us the limitations in reducing our carbon footprint through recycling alone (countries refusing to take America’s recycling materials, floating, plastic landmasses, etc.). How can races shift their focus to reusing and reducing the materials used in putting on an event to cut costs and diminish their environmental impact?

BEST RUNNING STORES SUMMIT

The Future is Personal TUESDAY, DECEMBER 3 / 8:00 AM – 11:00 AM HILTON AUSTIN

For the first time ever, those voted the Best Running Stores in America in 2019 will come together for a pre-conference workshop at TRE. The workshop will focus on how running stores personalize their brand communication from end to end, from in-store experience to external marketing, and it will be comprised of three parts:

Part 1: Why personalization is the number one trend in brand communication and how retailers are delivering it. Part 2: Technology and other tools stores can integrate into their business in order to succeed. Part 3: What owners and hiring managers should look for when tapping store leadership.

The session is open at no charge to stores that were named as one of the Best Running Stores in America for 2019, but for those who are interested in attending, visit therunningevent.com/register to purchase your All-Access Pass.

26 THE RUNNING EVENT • AUSTIN TEXAS 2019

THE BIG PITCH

Those with a Retailer or All-Access Pass will get to wrap up their day by watching three finalists pitch an idea of how they would use $5000 to attract new, younger consumers to their store. Selected finalists will get five minutes and can use up to three slides (and even props and costumes if it supports the presentation of the idea) and will then be questioned by the panel of judges from the sponsoring companies. Here’s the best part: The winning store will receive the $5000 to execute their idea; second place will receive $3000 and third place will receive $1500. Here’s how the selection process works:

FIRST… Each store submitting an idea must determine if the store is qualified. Does annual revenue total $1.5 million or less? Great! They are qualified to take part in The Big Pitch.

TUESDAY, DECEMBER 3 5:15 PM – 6:00 PM Austin Convention Center, 4th Floor, Ballroom D

NEXT… Submit the unique and innovative idea (using 350 words or less) by Friday, October 25. (Check your calendar, you might still have time if you want to submit your own idea!)

FINALLY… therunningevent.com/the-big-pitch

SUNSET BAT TOUR If you’ve never seen the bats in Austin, a novel way to do so is on the water.

The city of Austin is one of the most eclectic cities in America. Austin is a mix of the American Southwest and the Old South. And as the HQ of Dell Computers and Whole Foods, it also has a modern sophistication to it. It is the state capital of Texas and the selfproclaimed Live Music Capital of the World. Austin features more live music venues than any other city in the United States, the Moody Theater, home of the television show “Austin City Limits, “ the oldest-running musical oriented television program in the country.

LBJ RANCH

Embark on a kayak tour along the Colorado River and marvel at the Congress Avenue Bridge, which is home to the world’s largest urban colony of bats. It’s a little scary at first, but a professional guided tour, with commentary, and city views make for a memorable experience. THE LBJ RANCH Just outside Austin is the Texas Hill Country, home to some great running trails and the former home of Lyndon B. Johnson, the 36th president of the United States. Depending on how much time you have and how ambitious you are, a Hill Country Tour can include a Visit LBJ Ranch and a stop at Johnson City for a quick peek at the home where President Johnson spent his younger years, and then continue on to the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park. INDOOR SKY DIVING iFLY Austin 13265 US-183 This indoor skydiving experience puts you in a vertical wind tunnel, so you can float weightlessly in space for an unforgettable adrenaline rush in totally safe surroundings. We asked some of our longtime attendees at TRE what they would you do if they had just a few hours of free time in Austin during TRE? Here are their answers.

There are so many places we never get out to see when we’re there because so there is so much going on. For a little change of pace, people could rent a bike and do a nice riding tour of the area — Mellow Johnny’s is a great bike shop to use and good retail visit. I rode Austin for the first time last year and was so glad I did as I got out and saw loads of places I’d have never seen. I’d never been to the Capitol building or UT campus. And there’s a really good fried chicken place about two blocks from the Expo, can’t remember what it’s called, but it’s authentic and awesome. – KRIS HARTNER, NAPERVILLE RUNNING COMPANY

I think a visit to Franklin Barbeque for brisket is a must. But be prepared to wait in line! – JOHN ROGERS, FLEET FEET MAINE RUNNING

Other things I do when I’m there: • Run the “lake” trail. • Visit local running shops, which seem to change from year to year. • Visit Mellow Johnny’s bike shop 400 Nueces Street • I love to play golf in Austin. Barton Creek and Wolfdancer are both fun courses. • Play pool, shuffleboard, foosball, and darts at Buffalo Billiards. • Bowl and listen to music at Speakeasy. • Watch the bats. • People watch on 6th street. It’s a very interesting group. – EDDIE JOHNSON, A SNAIL’S PACE
