#APC2021
MESSAGE FROM
THE APC TEAM Dear Colleagues, We are thrilled to welcome you to the Administrative Professionals Conference and Executive Assistants’ Summit here in Chicago! As we all faced challenges throughout 2020, 2021 is proving to have hurdles of its own. Though there have been many changes since the last time we gathered in-person, we as a community have shown our resilience. You shared your stories of how your teams and companies came together (virtually) during some of the most isolating times, and how you implemented innovation to processes that haven’t been updated in decades. Many of you continued to show your peers and management teams your dedication to your careers by obtaining certifications and exemplifying leadership within your organizations. Our hearts are full and we are so proud to be together as we learn, grow, and collaborate over the next four days.

FEATURE SESSIONS MONDAY, SEPTEMBER, 20
TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER, 21
3:30PM – 4:30PM
3:30PM – 4:30PM
50 Simple Ways to Win People Over and Have Them Say, “Wow!” – Grand Ballroom
Navigating Change and Leading Yourself Through It - Grand Ballroom
– Lee Silber, Lead Trainer, Remote Worker Resource, Creative-Lee Speaking
– Carrie Spell-Hansson, CEO, The Folke Institute
The ability to impress everyone who interacts with you (even when they are distressed) is an important skill that makes you extremely valuable. From making a good first impression and leaving a lasting one to building your brand as a problemsolver and someone who gets results, this session shares simple tips and techniques for consistently winning rave reviews for what you do and how you do it.
Getting Unstuck: How to Design Your Empowered Life – Grand Hall G-J – Lonnetta Albright, President and Chief Visioning Officer (CVO), Forward Movement, Inc. It’s pretty common at different stages in life and career to feel stuck in a routine...stuck in the same position...stuck without a sense of direction...stuck feeling unmotivated and unfulfilled. We all want more out of life, but, too often, our successes are few and far between; and our disappointments are crushing. We take a short pause, and before we know it, years have slipped by, practically unnoticed. Deep down we know there is more to life than this. As we pursue our dreams, we fight for them in the outside world, and we also fight an internal battle with our inner voice. Often this voice is one of doubt and self judgement. What would happen if you focused on YOU for twelve consecutive months and gave YOU all you had? Wherever you really want to be, you are only going to get there from where you are right now. And to get from here to there, you are going to have to have a plan! You can choose to design your empowered life.
The only constant in life is change. Market conditions, pandemics, social and political unrest, customer needs, and aggressive competition have made a continual change the norm. Organizations and individuals that are nimble and able to change quickly will thrive. It is not a question of whether we want to change, but rather a question of how we are going to deal with the inevitable. Resistance to change is a normal reaction. This session will teach participants to accept and describe the purpose and nature of change. Participants will leave with practical information along with tools and tips for embracing change with new awareness, skills, and confidence.
Discover the Power of Allyship – Grand Hall K-N – Eddie Turner, The Leadership Excelerator®, Eddie Turner LLC In the wake of police incidents against people of color, harassment of marginalized communities and community protests coming into public view as they never have before, organizations large and small have sought to address the problematic issue of race, diversity, and inclusion in the workplace in new ways more than ever before. This session will discuss corporate employees’ experience with social injustice in the workplace from a first-person perspective and ideas for what can be done to help. Individuals supporting and advocating for their marginalized colleagues can help others understand that personal and corporate allyship can strengthen everyone’s business environments. The presentation is followed by a 30-minute open dialogue. Ask any question and explore how you can be an ally. Anyone interested in a frank, candid conversation about diversity in the workplace is welcome. Employees at all levels and experience will benefit from this crucial conversation.
Leading the Reluctant: How to Move Prickly People to Preferred Outcomes - Grand Hall G-J – Steven Iwersen, President, Aurora Pointe LLC How you intentionally relate to and communicate with others has a profound influence on your ability to build rapport, inspire collaboration, enhance positive camaraderie, resolve misunderstandings and lead through challenging times. Because people get “prickly” in times of change and uncertainty, leading can be as challenging as persuading a porcupine to race! How do you handle those moments when you encounter uncooperative (prickly) customers, team-members or partners? More importantly, how do you get them to work with you to achieve a mutually successful outcome? Get practical methods for communicating and building trust during uncomfortable times. Learn how to work with others to a shared success without getting stuck, and identify a personal strategy for improving your personal & professional relationships. 2021 PROGRAM GUIDE

Full-Day Workshops (*Pre-registration required) (W1) The One Day MBA* for Assistants - Regency A – Starla West, Founder & President, Starla West International
If you could benefit from a better understanding of the fundamentals behind your organization’s business objectives; from digging deeper into the thinking of your executive team, and by exploring your role as a strategic partner and force multiplier for your executive, put this on your schedule now. We’ll share the practical and theoretical concepts from MBA courses that are most relevant for administrative professionals. Level-up and adopt the thoughts and behaviors that make your role bring more value. Examine organizational frameworks, business models, and strategies and financial elements that drive performance. Dig into what executives focus on, prioritize, and drive towards; what they worry about and protect the organization from, and how they approach running the organization and make decisions. Walk away a more resourceful and influential assistant – better able to get things done quickly and effectively and to “head things off at the pass” for your executive. This workshop is hands-on; you will participate in interactive exercises and decision-making simulations.
(W2) Project Management Bootcamp - Regency B – Varun Anand, CEO, Founder, PMP Trainer at Eduhubspot
If you are managing projects, this “soup to nuts” workshop on the PM process is for you. We’ll start by discussing the basics of project management, the pain points in PM and how to overcome them. Then learn how to determine project scope and requirements, the significance of SMART requirements, and the importance of work breakdown structure. Next, see how to develop a project schedule and create an actionable project plan. Translate the project requirements into actionable tasks. In teams, explore the critical concept of risk management and how to identify risks including probability and impact assessment. Identify various risk response methods we can use to mitigate risk. To conclude the workshop, boost your understanding of procurement management, the different types of contracts and which contract is best suited for which type of scenario. 10 apcevent.com
– Lisa Olsen, Co-owner/Professional Development Specialist, Admin to Admin - Regency C
To achieve results, administrative professionals must negotiate in a multitude of situations and issues throughout the day with confidence and competence. To meet the needs of executives and the organization, you must practice a variety of critical negotiation skills that must be adapted for different situations, not just in regards to money. What is negotiation and how can leveraging your individual negotiation style help you navigate workplace situations, tasks and people? Examine the specific interpersonal, strategic, and communication skills that must be artfully and tactfully combined to identify options and reach desired results. We will focus on some of the misunderstood skills and principles that will give you the courage and confidence to step into any negotiation field and make it a win-win.
(W4) Minute Taking Master Skills Update – Rhonda Scharf, CSP, HoF, On The Right Track – Training and Consulting™ INC - Regency D
If you hate taking minutes, you are not alone. If you question the easiest and best way to take minutes, you are not alone. However, if you have always done your minutes the same way, you might be in trouble! Why we take minutes hasn’t changed over the years, but HOW we take minutes has! It isn’t smart, easy, nor recommended to just list who said what. Are you taking minutes the right and legal way? Are you up to date with 2021 and the ramifications of online meetings, email decisions, and the speed at which we are working? Don’t assume things are the same as they have always been because they are not. Ensure both you and your company document what needs to be documented the right (and easy) way!

10 Habits of Super Efficient People: How to Do (Almost) Everything Faster, Easier, & Better - Grand Hall G-J – Lee Silber, Lead Trainer, Remote Worker Resources
Since we all get the same amount of time in a day, how is it that some people seem to get so much more done? This session answers that question with a behind-the-scenes look at some of the most productive people of all time and how they did it. We’ll borrow the best ideas, modernize them, and make them work for us – taking a good look at the best technology to save time and increase our efficiency. How to Lead When You’re Not the Boss: Influencing Strategies and Techniques - Grand Ballroom – Lorinda Lewis, President, Lorinda Lewis, LLC
Successful leaders, even those who DO possess formal authority over others, know that the ability to influence others is the greatest tool in their leadership arsenal. When you communicate persuasively and collaboratively, others are more likely to become committed and productive. Lorinda focuses on techniques for getting your point across in a way that engages people voluntarily rather than directing or ordering them. She’ll cover how to establish your credibility as a leader, the importance of creating rapport and what you need to take into consideration about personality and interpersonal dynamics. Plus, you’ll have time to work with your peers on influencing scenarios.
Communicating Authentically for Greater Impact - Grand Hall K-N
– Lisa Olsen, Co-owner/Professional Development Specialist, Admin to Admin
Authentic communication is more art than skill. What we say, how we say it, when we say it and to whom we say it are essential and critical components for practicing authentic communication. Authenticity doesn’t mean saying what you think at all costs. Surprisingly, the foundation of authentic communication involves understanding and identifying with the receiver first. To build credibility and influential impact, it’s important to commit to taking responsibility for your communication from a growth-oriented perspective. Discover your barriers to authentic communication and how they can sabotage your credibility. Learn how to develop communication context awareness and what becoming a relationship engineer has to do with authentic communication.
Managing Risk as the Project Lead - Plaza Ballroom – Varun Anand, CEO, Founder, PMP Trainer at Eduhubspot
Whenever you step into a leadership role on a project, there are risks. As the project lead, one of your first tasks is to consider: Where is there risk – positive OR negative? How might we get off track? Uncertainties are part of every project, and part of your job is to anticipate them and have a strategy in place to address them. Get practical steps for identifying, assessing and responding to potential issues related to budget, deadlines, delays, errors and more.
Demonstrate Your Value & Show Your Boss the Benefits of Having an Assistant - Regency A – Starla West, Founder & President, Starla West International
Perhaps your boss has not had an assistant before. Perhaps they believe they can handle everything on their own, just as well and just as quickly as an assistant. In either scenario, you will find that you are not able to contribute or perform at your best. Be overlooked, undervalued and underused no more! It’s up to you to get your boss to stop overlooking your expertise and the value you bring, and open them up to leveraging your skills. Learn how to “educate” him or her about the benefits of having an assistant, and why it’s a win/ win for them to make use of you. Lay the foundation for a strong and sustainable relationship with your boss.
Practical Strategies for Managing Up - Regency B – Chrissy Scivicque, Career Coach and Corporate Trainer, EatYourCareer
Did you know that your boss relies on you to manage up? Executives tell us they count on their assistant to maximize their success. You might not have a traditional managerial title, but every admin has influence. Learning to utilize that influence to help lead your superiors will make you an invaluable asset. While the term “managing up” is often thrown around in the workplace, many professionals are still unclear about what it really means and how to do it effectively. This session offers important perspectives and provides a down-to-earth methodology any admin can use to begin “leading from behind.”
Slides that Impress: A Design-thinking Approach to Creating Amazing PowerPoints - Regency C – Curtis Newbold, Newbold Communication & Design
Designing beautiful, impactful slide decks is no longer a luxury reserved for trained graphic designers and communication wizards. Professionals in an information-heavy, visually rich era need to know how to effectively match the content of their message with visual displays that stick. To do that you have to move away from a bullet-focused, contentheavy deck to something far more human-friendly and engaging. We’ll walk you through a design-thinking approach to slide deck design, giving you a toolkit for making beautiful and engaging slides.

Over time she found a more effective and less taxing way to approach both performance and her career. When it comes to performance and career, resilience is frequently a better focus and less stressful path. Assistants who are seeking both strong performance outcomes and career satisfaction will get strategies and techniques to become more resilient and to help bend the curve when it comes to perfectionist tendencies.

SOPs are important documents! Unfortunately, they are often dull, difficult to follow, inconsistent in layout and word choice, jargon-dense, or not organized with the user in mind. – Carrie Spell-Hansson, CEO, The Folke Institute
Teams are an essential part of organizations today and are increasingly multicultural and more diverse in such dimensions as gender, age, race/ethnicity, and nationality. A great deal of team leadership focuses exclusively on external leaders serving in a formal capacity in the organization, while largely ignoring the processes and impact of internal team leadership. The ability to communicate with team members with different outlooks, perceptions, and behaviors is essential to the team’s success. This session will focus on the internal team leadership roles which are often informal and emergent. By the end of the session, participants will leave with practical tools and tips for managing teams with new awareness, skills, and confidence where all team members can be heard and represented.
