Egypt Retains 2nd Place for Best Dive Destination Egypt retains the second place it earned in 2019, once again commanding a large proportion of the vote, with a lot of enthusiasm for a nation that has seen its beleaguered tourist industry

suffer a number of setbacks over the last

5

decade. With its crystal clear blue waters, year-round sunlit, cloudless skies, vibrant coral and a good

range of big to little critters to delight over, the Egyptian Red Sea is not just one of the world's best diving destinations, but the birthplace of a great many love affairs with the underwater

world. Regular visitors will no doubt be pleased to see two Egyptian centres making the Top 10 for the first time in 2020. Diventures Magazine

Egyptian DIVER Claims Endurance Record Egyptian scuba diver Saddam Al-Kilany, 29, has claimed a new world record for longest saltwater dive, after staying under water for almost six days in Dahab in the northern Red Sea. The claim awaits verification from Guinness World Records (GWR).

Al-Kilany was said to have spent five years preparing for his record attempt. Submerging on 5 November, he was attended by a medical team supervised by Adel Taher, well-known to

7

scuba divers as director of South Sinai’s Hyperbaric Medical Centre.

Al-Kilany was monitored on camera throughout his dive, and GWR will have to scrutinize some 143 hours’ worth of video footage to ensure that all its conditions were met. The diver was reported to have passed the time by exercising, praying, eating and drawing – one of his favorite pastimes is

said to be underwater painting. In September he and his Spanish fiancée, fellow-diver Pia Legora, had made headlines in Egypt by holding their engagement ceremony under water. Current world record-holder and the man Al-Kilany’s dive was designed to beat by a matter of minutes is Turkish diver Cem

Karabay. He recorded a time of 142 hr 42min 42sec in 2016. Diventures Magazine

Tragic Shark Accident in Egypt A tragic shark attack in the Egyptian Red Sea over the weekend saw a 12-year-old boy lose an arm. The incident happened in the popular Ras Mohammed National Park, off the tip of the Sinai Peninsula to the south of tourist

hotspot Sharm el Sheikh. A Ukrainian mother and son were snorkelling with an Egyptian guide when the attack took place. It is suspected that the attack was carried out by a two-metre oceanic whitetip shark. The area of the marine park has been closed off. A statement from

9

the Egyptian Environment Ministry said ‘the minister has decided to suspend all human activities in the vicinity of the attack in accordance to present global practice in shark attacks on humans’. The ministry also said that video footage captured underwater at the attack location showed the shark had been acting abnormally and had been hostile towards humans.

Thankfully, shark attacks globally are very rare, and there have been few such incidents in the Red Sea. When there have, there have often been exacerbating circumstances, such as feeding. The oceanic whitetip shark is one of the most-majestic sharks in the ocean, and is one of the species most sought after by divers, as its

inquisitive nature will mean it will approach quite closely, allowing them to get phenomenal images. Diventures Magazine

Divers Find Bones, Boots & Weapons The remains of a young 16th-century soldier have been found by scuba divers in Lake Asveja in eastern Lithuania. Archaeologists found the bones beneath a layer of mud and sand at

a depth of 9m. They had been excavating beneath Dubingiai Bridge, a timber structure built in 1934 to span the northern part of the lake. The discovery was described as the first of its kind in Lithuania by Elena Pranckenaite from the archaeology department at Vilnius

11

University. She said that the location had not been a ceremonial burial site, but the soldier had been identified as such because he was found with his sword, two knives and well-preserved leather boots. How and exactly when the man had died could not be determined but his bones have been sent for forensic examination by the

university’s medical faculty, while the soldier’s possessions are being conserved at the National Museum of Lithuania.

Lake Asveja lies in the east of Lithuania, north of the capital Vilnius, and is the country’s longest body of water at nearly 14 miles. It is

said to be explored regularly by underwater archaeologists.

MARINE LIFE

Could manufacturing a COVID-19 vaccine pose a threat to sharks? MacDonald and Saul Study Summary While squalene made from shark liver oil is indeed sometimes used in vaccines, recent claims that this represents a major shark conservation issue are at best oversimplified, and at worst fear-mongering that distracts from real issues. Yes, some squalene is made with shark liver oil. But this does not mean that we are particularly likely to see the mass slaughter of sharks to meet the demand for squalene for COVID-19 vaccines. The biggest shark conservation concern raised by a recently published

23

Macdonald and Soll analysis is that deep sea sharks contain more liver oil but are also more susceptible to overfishing pressure. Intensification of deep-sea shark fisheries will indeed be a problem, but there is currently no evidence that this is happening. It is also important to note here that the use of shark liver oil in making vaccines does not necessarily mean the death of many sharks that would not have been killed otherwise. As the paper's author Catherine MacDonald pointed out in her FAQ, about 100 million sharks are caught each year in current fisheries, and we can get a lot of squalene from them. Perhaps most importantly, you can get squalene of the same pharmaceutical quality at roughly the same cost from plants. It takes a little longer so we have to start now. The authors assert that this does not mean at all that sharks are more important than humans in a public health crisis; This means we can protect biodiversity while also saving human lives if we plan ahead a little bit. DIVE MIDICENE

Diving & Diabetes Can I dive if I Have Diabetes? After your doctor approves, you can dive with diabetes, with some precautions. Diabetes should be well controlled and

diabetes complications free. Prospective divers with diabetes should first establish baselines for the impact of exercise on blood sugar levels by

25

recreating some of the activities associated with diving (such as carrying tanks or loading diving equipment).

Assuming that there are no problems with hypoglycemia during these exercises, divers should begin diving in a controlled environment and progress to a calm environment in open water. Divers can gradually increase the depth of their dive, while keeping a record of their diet and blood sugar. Diabetics should avoid depths more than 30 meters, dives longer than 60 minutes, and situations that may exacerbate the risk of hypoglycemia such as cold water, strong currents, or other strenuous conditions. Discovery of Coral Reef 500 m Height! Scientists have discovered a reef taller than the

Empire State Building at the tip of the Great Barrier Reef off Cape York, Australia. The reef towers are over 1,640 feet (500 meters) tall, making them taller not only than the iconic New York City skyscraper, but also the Sydney Tower

in Australia or the Petronas Twin Towers in Malaysia.

on R / V Falkor, a research vessel of the Californiabased nonprofit Schmidt Ocean Institute. The tougher point of the reef is about 130 feet below

the surface. "We were surprised and pleased with what we found," Dr. Biman said in a press release. "Not only to mapping 3D coral reefs in detail, but also seeing this discovery visually by a SuBastian robot is

incredible."

NITROX Nitrox is nitrogen mixed with oxygen. It is also known as enriched air due to the increased oxygen content in it. This specific component sets it apart from other common diving gases. Both recreational and technical divers use this gas to breathe. In

recreational diving, this mixture helps you absorb less nitrogen because it contains more oxygen. Nitrox mixtures usually contain more than 21% oxygen, but in no case should they exceed 40%. Benefits of Nitrox Longer Scuba Time Divers who use Nitrox absorb less nitrogen, making

35

them stay underwater for longer. They are also less likely to have

hypotension disease. Less Fatigue This feature hasn't been confirmed yet, but some feel less tired. Longer Dives Absorbing less nitrogen in your first dive with Nitrox gives you more frequent dive times. Shorter Surface Intervals Nitrox breathing also gives you shorter surface

intervals. Disadvantage of Enriched Air Not Suitable for Depths to avoid oxygen poisoning, depending on the percentage of oxygen in the cylinder Oxygen Poisoning Increasing oxygen concentration can cause oxygen poisoning. Cost There is often an additional cost when using an enriched air tank.
