LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Last spring I thought about how unique it would be to have a 100% beauty issue outside of our consistent fashion publication. A “beauty report” of sorts with makeup how-to’s, top trends, and beauty editorials, to name a few, that would all be exclusive to this issue and serve as something fun and bold for the team to be a part of. With that in mind, we created DWF Issue 13: Beauty. As a lover of makeup and all things “glam,” I couldn’t be prouder or more excited for this issue and all that went into it. Being able to create two additional issues this semester, to me, was a true testament to the work ethic of this team and our willingness to constantly push the limits and outdo none other than ourselves. I hope through the pages of this issue, you find a new-found love for all things beauty! XOXO,

Noelle Torrillo, Editor-in-Chief

MUST-TRY BEAUTY TRENDS On the runway, the designers’ looks are the main focus, but it’s the keen details that finalize the look and tie it all together. Notice all the major makeup trends on the runway this season and find out how you can imitate these looks so easily on your own! By: Katherine Higgins

TO GET THE LOOK: Looking for looks just like these? Lucky for you Rihanna just released her new makeup line, Fenty Beauty. Get all her products and you can feel like you’re apart of Fenty University too!

FENTY X PUMA: BRILLIANT & BUSY Rihanna has quickly become an icon and has launched herself into the fashion world with flying colors, both literally and figuratively. Her Fall 2017 line, Fenty x Puma, was a bold show with a story. With the fashion show taking on the atmosphere of a school, Fenty University seemed like the coolest place to ever be enrolled at. Sign us up! As the styles and looks changed throughout the show, the makeup changed with them and it seemed to tell a story of the different styles seen in a not-so-typical high school or college. At first, the models were slaying an orange shimmery eyeshadow look with three black ticks drawn under their eyes. This look was paired with most of the dark blue and green plaids and was also matched with some vibrant oranges. About halfway through the show, the makeup takes a change and goes all natural matched with looks incorporating dark blue and many accents of yellow. The orange is still relevant as the eyeshadow was replaced with a neon orange mascara that served as a minuscule detail but was certainly noticeable. Towards the end of the show, the colors went dark and the models were wearing a plethora of dark maroons and oranges that were matched with dark maroon lips and black wing shaped eyes. The show ended with a goth type feel, with all models, male and female, wearing black eyeliner that was smudged down their face almost as if they had been recently crying. This stays true to the “school-like” atmosphere, and Rihanna pleased all of her fans like she always seems to do!

BEAUTY TRENDS

VALENTINO: WHITE & BRIGHT Creative Director, Pierpaolo Piccioli, went with clear vibrant tones in his Fall 2017 line. Each look was paired with a popping white eyeliner and highlights around the eyes, accomplishing a pristine ambiance. Cohesiveness from top to bottom is clear by Piccioli pairing white tights and ankle boots with each white eyed look. Other than that specific detail, he strays away from all other classics like deep black eyeliner or colored lips to accomplish a bright and dreamy feel. His makeup fits his line: clean, feminine, and simple. Want to accomplish this look at home? Look no further than E.L.F. Cosmetics. They sell a smooth white liner pencil that will easily accomplish the white lined fall look - and it’s only $1!

TO GET THE LOOK: This shimmer can be easily replicated with any shimmery highlighters or eyeshadow alike. Sugar Box sells three separate soft brightening liquids in silver, pink, and bronze for only $14!

SAINT LAURENT: NEW & NATURAL This specific line has been widely talked about amongst all the fashion experts in the world. To all those who don’t know, Saint Laurent recently changed creative directors. Hedi Slimane left Saint Laurent in 2016 and was replaced by an Italian fashion designer and the former Creative Director of Versus Versace, Anthony Vaccarello. The sudden change from a French designer to an Italian designer was drastic and extremely evident in not only the clothing, but also the makeup trends, as well. Evolving from a full dark lined eye and red lip look in 2016, Vaccarello did the complete opposite and kept the makeup to a minimum this season. No more than slight silver and shimmer on the eyes could be seen. Everything else appeared to be completely natural. The line is dark and bold, so keeping the makeup light and minimal kept all the focus on the newly re-vamped Saint Laurent.

BEAUTY TRENDS

CHANEL: VIBRANT & VINTAGE Although Creative Director Karl Lagerfeld did incorporate color into his Fall 2017 Chanel line, most of the hues were centered around darker colors. Because of this, each look was paired with an eye that was as colorful as you could get! With each dark piece, there was an underlying color of either red, orange, yellow, green, or blue. These were all the colors that were used for eyeshadows and matched with a dark eyeliner on the waterline. The lips were natural and other than the vibrant eyes, no other makeup was noticeable, nor was it needed. This created a bold popping statement that matched perfectly with the vintage, unique style that is Chanel. This can be a more challenging look to accomplish at home, but that doesn’t mean you don’t have the tools to try! NYX Ultimate offers both a nude and color palette for $17 apiece for all your eyeshadow needs!

VERSACE: BADASS & BOLD Everything about it was bold - from the encouraging words of “EQUALITY,” “STRENGTH,” “LOVE,” “COURAGE,” “UNITY,” “POWER,” and “LOYALTY” sewn into almost all of the pieces, to the thick black winged eyeliner seen on all the models. As the show went on, the colors became lighter, but the makeup was never changed. All that was visible was the blackest of black winged eyeliner that covered the whole lid, giving each look just the extra edge it needed. This look can be easily accomplished with any black liquid eyeliner, but the bolder the tool you use to apply, the better! Target sells a Black Radiance Bold & Sexy eyeliner equipped with two ends to achieve a sophisticated or dramatic look for only $4.99!

TEMPERLEY LONDON

The Little Black Dress may have finally met its equally dark counterpart this season with the arrival of the LBB: Little Black Bow. The LBB has shown up in collections across the designer spectrum and given designs a youthful look, but don’t be fooled by the name. As audiences saw in Marchesa’s show, the LBB doesn’t have to be black or little to complete an ensemble.

NOT A ONE TRICK PONY

It is off to the races as the Fall ’17 runways take one of fashion’s most underrated, but none the less, classic hairstyles under its wing: the iconic ponytail. Sure, the simple hairdo might seem plain at first glance, but by using multi-textured hair, a sleek finish, or deep side part, the typically ordinary style becomes irresistible.

SLICKED BACK 2.0 Re-imagining classic do’s to make them fresh and exciting again is what the fashion industry does best, and slicked back tresses are no exception. Designers visited the slicked back, slightly wet look on the Spring/Summer ’17 runways and to reinvent this look designers like Giambattista Valli have relied on a more relaxed finish with a bit of volume for added height.

LESS IS MORE Most people shudder at the thought of styling their hair in the grade school nostalgic bowl cuts of their past. This fall season, however, designers have brought particular attention to this hairstyle and revamped it to give the youthful cut an edgy flair. Versace’s addition of colored streaks to create dimension and contrast is just one example of many of how high fashion can make even cringe inducing hairstyles chic.

IT’S ALL ‘ON’ YOUR HEAD Headbands made a return to the scene in collections for fashion giants like Elie Saab and Miu Miu during the Fall ’17 season, but none made a splash quite like Chanel’s collection which featured knitted headbands with jewels lining the front to give it added sparkle.

DIG DEEP No, when we say deep side part we’re not talking about the Emo themed comb over you rocked in middle school. The fashion world is referring to the equal parts elegant and dramatic style that dominated the Fall runways. This look is versatile, and designers cleverly used this to their advantage to create intriguing looks.

#GIRLBOSSES: THE IMPACT OF NEW AGE BEAUTY COMPANIES & THE WOMEN BEHIND THEM By: Alyssa Cerchiai

In recent years, beauty ended its run as a societal standard and became a malleable concept – one that is constantly redefined based on individual confidence. The stigma that comes with an untamed mane or unkempt eyebrows is quickly diminishing. Beauty communities are finally beginning to celebrate the realistic range of effort and style applied to individual beauty routines; This may have something to do with the surge in female CEOs in the beauty industry. With firsthand understanding of the limitations of a universal understanding of beauty, emerging entrepreneurs acknowledge the clear differences in beauty consumers. Their companies have made strives to create a realm for simplicity and expression, and consumers cannot get enough. Read on to learn about three entrepreneurial powerhouses whose daring brands are so authentic that they can’t help but maintain an enormous following.

EMILY WEISS OF

GLOSSIER

Before her makeup brand exploded with success, Emily Weiss began her fame as a blogger under the website Into the Gloss. Since the beginning, Weiss has emphasized that skincare is the root of good makeup. There was no better way for her to embody that notion than with a makeup and skincare brand called Glossier. Glossier gained traction as soon as it was created because of its now holy-grail products in makeup collections all of over the world. Products range from jelly-like cleansers, serums, and low coverage foundations that are meant to simply enhance one’s natural beauty. Glossier is now branching out into the realm of full body care with the release of body wash, lotion, and a fragrance that smells different on everyone.

JEN ATKIN OF

OUAI

Hair stylist to the stars, Jen Atkin, is not only the creator of her hair-focused blog, Mane Addicts, but also the creator of her fairly new, yet wallet-opening brand, Ouai (pronounced like oui in French, but cooler). Atkin’s products are high end, but cater to a market of individuals who want hair that both looks and is effortless. Her products are ground-breaking, like her foaming dry shampoo and hair supplements for oily, dry, and thin hair. Jen Atkin is constantly seeking a better connection with her audience through social media, and is known for taking comments and criticisms on her products. Her ability to be in touch with her audience has allowed for consumers to deeply invest themselves in Atkin’s individual brand.

LEANDRA MEDINE

OF

On her website called Man Repeller, Leandra Medine has attracted a following of daring readers who identify with an exciting sense of fashion that is simultaneously meticulous, yet carefree. Medine often describes her style as “maximalistic,” as she is known for compiling the least expected and most riveting outfits, complete with mixed prints, layered textures, and contrasting colors. Medine’s brand constantly emphasizes that personal style should not be on the basis of pleasing anyone other than oneself, hence the name of her blog. Her light hearted and often comedic approach to fashion is one of the aspects of her site that keeps readers engaged. Man Repeller aims to remove the notion that there is a right and wrong way to dress.
