INTRODUCTION

By: Noelle Torrillo

T

his past year was so many things - challenging, full of excitement, and on very few occasions, more than I thought myself or this team could handle due to the standards we had set for ourselves. After re-branding as a high fashion publication last fall and creating the largest DWF issue to date (at the time), to expanding in the spring then, most recently, releasing our first summer issue, I wondered what we could do next that had not yet been done at DWF. With that in mind, for the remainder of the summer, Creative Director, Daniel Estrada and I, decided that in order to ensure that the magazine was cohesive throughout, we would determine what concepts would make the issue - relating them to articles and videos, as well. I sat on that initial decision for quite some time before the concept of a coffee table book we would call, DWF: The Collection, came to fruition. Since day one in this position, I’ve placed a great deal of importance on the members of my team being able to express their ideas and explore their individual creativity. For me, this was exactly what this book could offer: a collection of concepts from the team members that chose to express themselves through styling, makeup, and ultimately, photographs. Giving equal opportunity to all team members to create as they saw fit, regardless of position, we concluded the semester with a team of sixty-three and twenty-four concepts, two of which came from teams with two members coming together to present a single idea. With the opportunity for everyone to bring their ideas to life, I also thought why not allow our Behind the Scenes (BTS) Photographers to shoot a great deal of the photo shoots in Editorial capacities, as well. One of which,

the always cheery and self-motivated Chelsea Beckton, shot the cover of this book featuring one of our Beauty Team members, the impeccably stylish, Judy Shin. Surprise, Chelsea! I hope you love this cover as much as I have since the day you captured it. While working towards our goals this semester, we never ran into a dull moment. Aside from the twenty-four concepts presented on the following pages, we also shot an additional eleven concepts between the three publications we released this semester as well: issues 12-14 (A/W, Beauty, and Accessories) for a grand total of thirty-five shoots, over six-hundred pages of content, and the largest team in DWF history. Overjoyed and proud are understatements to say the least. To me, this semester stood apart from the last two as I think everything that took place was the culmination of the previous year’s hard work. There were no bumps in the road this time around - everything just fell into place exactly how we saw them over the summer. I decided to conclude this book with the best BTS moments from our magazine shoots, offering a glimpse of the publication we have become and the team that stands behind it: a place to share ideas with teammates who have turned into great friends and in some instances, family away from home. Keeping the projects we completed this semester as a surprise to the whole team throughout production (with the exception of a few) was unbelievably hard. I hope it was worth the wait for you all! Until next time -

SOPHIA BALLESTEROS Fall, Again

PHOTOGRAPHED by DANIEL ESTRADA

MODELS: CHERISSE MILLER & KATIE ROMBEIRO; MAKEUP: MEGAN HUBBARD; PRODUCTION ASSISTANT: SOPHIA HERNANDEZ

Fall, again. I say “again” simply because this concept was inspired by some of the great icons of the past, but more specifically, by an era that none of us here at DWF, nor the majority of us at Florida State for that matter, have ever known ourselves. An era that brought us Beatle mania, Twiggy, and a new wave of fashion designed for flexibility and beauty. Short skirts, funky tights, berets, and dramatic eyes were all typical staples of the retro fashion trends that we know and love from the 1960’s. Colorful patterns and bold shapes were often coordinated throughout entire looks for a more playful take on “grown up” fashion. However, this is not to say that this era was lacking in the sophistication that was so prominent in fashion from the decade before. In fact, early American 60’s fashion was highly influenced by First Lady Jackie Kennedy and her sensible and clean cut style, and of course along with her perfectly matched accessories such as her iconic pill box hat and low heeled shoes. For this shoot, I wanted to create a style that was influenced by the London Mod scene while also incorporating looks that were still true to the American fashion trends of that time. Looks that were sleek and coordinated but still youthful and fun came to mind and, I’m happy to say, I think were achieved.

“Isn’t life a series of images that change as they repeat themselves?” – Andy Warhol Fashion is a cycle. Trends come and go only to be recycled again, typically when we least expect. To famously quote Yves Saint Laurent in summary, “fashion fades, style is eternal.” Trends of the past often find their way back to us, maybe rejuvenated and morphed into something almost unrecognizable, but still the same—time and time again.”

CHELSEA BECKTON Artemis

PHOTOGRAPHED by CHELSEA BECKTON

MODEL: SOPHIA BALLESTEROS

The images, outfit, and location for this concept were completely impromptu. I based the photo shoot around my extended concentration on goddesses. My typical goddess themed shoots consist of clothes that either flow or have a soft look to them, a monochromatic color scheme, and either gold or no accents. Then I have the model interact with an element. In these images, because she is so heavily involved with the sun and is dressed in all white, she is the goddess of light. The name of the Greek goddess of light is Artemis.”

ANDREA CABRERA Feeling Denim

PHOTOGRAPHED by DANIEL ESTRADA

MODEL: SOPHIA BALLESTEROS; MAKEUP: NOELLE TORRILLO; STYLIST: GRACE RODRIGUEZ

Feeling Denim is all about feeling good with yourself, and with double denim, if it is done correctly, it can look so stylish. You can never own too much denim and that is what inspired me to create this shoot, and it was one of the trends we saw on the runways this Fall 2017. It is classy, modern, chic, and stylish all year round. Because whether it is a simple jacket, skirt, top, or jeans, we all know that twice as much denim is twice as good.”

ADI COHEN The Primaries

PHOTOGRAPHED by TARA WILSON

MODELS: COLE BRYANT GRIFFIN & LLOYD NEWBY; STYLIST: LLOYD NEWBY PRODUCTION ASSISTANT: MARTIN SOTO

The Primaries was inspired by Gosha Rubchinskiy’s AW17 collection, as well as Piet Mondrians painting Composition C. The colors and athletic styles of Rubchinskiy’s collection was something that I was trying to emulate in this shoot. Thank you DWF for this amazing opportunity and a massive thank you to everyone who helped me pull this thing together. It was great working with all of you.”

ARIEL ENGEL The Darkest Enchantment

PHOTOGRAPHED by DANIEL ESTRADA

MODEL: KATHERINE HIGGINS; MAKEUP: CRIS RENNER; PRODUCTION ASSISTANTS: DALIA PICHEL & CRIS RENNER

This shoot takes on a gothic style bounded with mystical and ethereal elements. The contrast between sheer fabric and metal hardware balances each other out, providing a dainty “fairytale” like theme. The shoot was inspired by New York Fashion Week’s Fall 2017 Runway, by designers like John Galliano and Valentino’s take on Victorian Gothic Style with clean and modern edge. These whimsical,avant-garde looks present beauty in a new light.”

ISABELA FRAIZ Beauté Naturelle

PHOTOGRAPHED by DANIEL ESTRADA

MODELS: ALYSSA CERCHIAI, LAUREN EDMONDS, & ISABELA FRAIZ; MAKEUP: ISABELA FRAIZ, MEGHAN MAYNARD, & CRIS RENNER; PRODUCTION ASSISTANT: CRIS RENNER

Bloom where you are planted” is one of my favorite phrases and one that came to my mind the moment I started thinking about this photo shoot. I wanted a shoot that could convey natural feminine beauty, through highlighting each of the model’s features in the most ethereal way. The concept is supposed to work with each woman’s very own charm using elements of nature that reflect the fall season. Also, to showcase how women can be both as delicate as a rose petal and as tough as its thorns. A woman can be both gentle and empowering, and she should never give up being delicate for being strong.

The shoot also portrays how each woman can work with her unique allure and express herself with the help of one of nature’s most beautiful elements – flowers. And just like Christian Dior said: “After women, flowers are the most lovely thing God has given to the world.” Another phrase that I love and that proves how the delicacy of flowers and womanhood has inspired artists for centuries, and continues to do so. Beauté Naturelle is a celebration of femininity, diversity and nature; and I hope it inspires viewers to see the intertwined beauty in each and every one of us – made perfectly imperfect.”

KATHERINE HIGGINS Serene Sunday

PHOTOGRAPHED by DANIEL ESTRADA

MODELS: SOFIA COLON RIVERO & GIO REVERON; MAKEUP: SOFIA COLON RIVERO; PRODUCTION ASSISTANT: SOPHIA BALLESTEROS

It is the most important thing in life to find your own personal creative outlet. Whether it be your fashion, your art, your photography, or the designs of your room, it is detrimental to who you are as a human and as an artist. I have always been jealous of those who can sing, draw, paint, or dance because of they can create images with their skills so beautifully. I eventually came to realize that no matter what your talents are, you can find some way to let out that creative side of yourself.

My college bedroom is something I have been planning since I watched my sister decorate her room when she was my age, about 5 years ago. It is my happy place and the most accurate representation of who I am. I wanted to center this shoot around the culture of my room and beauty that is sleepwear fashion. My vision was to match the vibe of my room to a calm, intimate and loving couple enjoying a Sunday afternoon. It was important to me to find a real couple, and you can so easily see the love the beautiful models, Sofia and Gio, have for each other by how the pictures are portrayed. I’d like to thank Sofia and Gio for being the perfect couple for my vision and everyone that was involved in the process of making my DWF concept become a reality.”

MODELS: HEDYEH ERFANI, CHENNEL MARCANO, JORDAN PHELAN, KATIE PRIEST, & ALYNA WOODALL; MAKEUP: CHENNEL MARCANO & DELANEY WILLIAMS; STYLISTS: MORGAN BOLAN & DELANEY WILLIAMS

2017 has been the “year of transition” for me. From graduating community college and getting accepted into my dream school, to moving out for the first time and getting my first apartment in a brand new city. It has truly been a lot to take in. With my ultimate goal of becoming a fashion designer, I have always been very driven by the dynamics of fashion. Fashion Is about making transitions and building from one design or [experience] to another. This photo shoot was a representation of my transition; there’s edge, class, structure and glam in this shoot. I am currently living my dream, and with that, I always remember that “You can have anything you want. If you dress for It.” - Edith Head”

MEGAN HUBBARD Submersion

PHOTOGRAPHED by DANIEL ESTRADA

MODEL: SOPHIA BALLESTEROS; MAKEUP: MEGAN HUBBARD; PRODUCTION ASSISTANTS: KATHERINE HIGGINS & NOELLE TORRILLO

This look was inspired by the glamorous and unique style that the British makeup artist Pat McGarth kindles through her makeup looks. I used her Subliminal palette from her impressive Mothership line to achieve the rich blue. The eyes were the main feature and were inspired by the deep, subversive waters of the ocean. At first, I had a creative block as a makeup artist and decided to make it up as I went, and it turned out even better than expected.”

PHOTOGRAPHED by DANIEL ESTRADA

MODELS: LAUREN EDMONDS, VICTORIA GARCIA, & DESIRAE HALL; MAKEUP: MEGHAN MAYNARD; STYLISTS: LLOYD NEWBY & DELANEY WILLIAMS

Considering the true spirit of fall, Chroma is inspired by monochromatic looks layered with bold, lush textures. Our chosen looks embody the power of volume and the comfort of loose fits. With the layering of knits, crushed velvet, fur, and pleated silk, we got to bring the multiuse of textured garments to life. Our colors of choice - dignified emerald, deep navy, and a chic blush came together giving this photoshoot a complete balance to our vision. Caught amongst the final minutes of Tallahassee’s golden hour, Chroma releases the true color and textural balance of our completed looks.”

CHENNEL MARCANO Leather

PHOTOGRAPHED by CHELSEA BECKTON

MODEL: CHENNEL MARCANO; MAKEUP: CHENNEL MARCANO; PRODUCTION ASSISTANT: TARA WILSON

My name is Chennel Marcano I am 22 years old from Tampa Florida. I have always had a love for street wear and I wanted that to show in this shoot. A leather jacket is a staple in my wardrobe and I wanted to play around with looks that centered on that. Whether its ripped jeans and heels or a bomber with vans I feel confident in the way I present myself. I love how one jacket or skirt can create a plethora of looks. Fashion evokes a feeling and I strive on creating new feelings with each of my looks.”

MODELS: SIERRA BRAVE & LEXI WOLF; MAKEUP: MEGHAN MAYNARD & NOELLE TORRILLO; PRODUCTION ASSISTANTS: DALIA PICHEL & EDUARDO PROL

My own personal style was a major influence on my idea of a 70’s themed photo shoot. I have a favorite vintage store back home and everything I get from there seems to be from the 70’s. Not only do I find the fashions in the 70’s unique and captivating, but the whole decade in itself was a catalyst for social change and all the more inspiring.”

PHOTOGRAPHED by TARA WILSON

MODEL: GELILA HAWTHORNE; MAKEUP: MEGHAN MAYNARD; PRODUCTION ASSISTANTS: ARIEL ENGEL & SOPHIA HERNANDEZ

During my three semesters here at Diverse World Fashion, I’ve had the opportunity to express myself creatively and bring photoshoots to life through makeup. It has been such a great experience working with so many talented people here at the magazine. For my beauty concept, I wanted to create a modern, elegant look with a rich pop of color.”

CECILIA MONGE Monochrome

PHOTOGRAPHED by DANIEL ESTRADA

MODELS: ALYSSA CERCHIAI & CECILIA MONGE; MAKEUP: ARIEL ENGEL & CRIS RENNER; STYLISTS: AUDREY ANELLO & MORGAN BOLAN

Monochromatic outfits are a unique and bold way to emphasize visual texture. Through the use of the same colors throughout the look, attention is drawn to the texture and details of the fabric which draws an appreciation for the garments. Working as a part of the DWF team has really given me an opportunity to explore my own creativity and really delve into what it means to work with a creative team to bring my fashion concept to life.”

MODEL: ALLY MOTUSH; MAKEUP: DYLAN MORAN; PRODUCTION ASSISTANT: JESSICA COLEGROVE

My concept was inspired by my own style with an flare. I used my all-black idea and added dramatic effects including glitter and extremely long wings. My experience at DWF has made me feel more involved at FSU than any other organization. I am always so proud to say that I am apart of something so genuine and around others who share my love of makeup and fashion.”

MODELS: MATTHEW DONALDSON, COLE BRYANT GRIFFIN, RAEVIN HAWKINS, LLOYD NEWBY, & IMANNI PORTER; MAKEUP: SOPHIA HERNANDEZ; PRODUCTION ASSISTANTS: SOPHIA BALLESTEROS & TARA WILSON

My concept “Unfriendly Black Hotties” came to me while I was scrolling through my Tumblr and listening to SZA’s album “CTRL”. I began thinking about all the things that make me who I am, the way I speak, my melanin skin tone, but most importantly the manner in which I carry myself. I draw inspiration from so many creative artists! Frank Ocean, Rihanna, SZA, Kanye West… They all push individuality in all aspects of their lives, and the importance of staying true to who you are no matter how uncomfortable it makes others feel. With this concept, I hoped to one, depict the multifaceted nature of fashion amongst young black youth, Number two... Display the creativity that lies within my soul, and ultimately have a lot of fun! This concept means so much to me and everyone closely involved! Until next time, Unfriendly Black Hottie #1 signing out!”

CRIS RENNER Duality

PHOTOGRAPHED by DANIEL ESTRADA

MODELS: KAELYN HAMILTON & DYLAN MORAN; MAKEUP: CRIS RENNER; PRODUCTION ASSISTANT: NOELLE TORRILLO

Duality was inspired by the push and pull of opposing forces and the balance that they create. These looks compliment each other and are made better by existing side by side. From glittery pops of teal to wispy rust colored lines, the phrase opposites attract has never been more true. Classic beauty ideals dictate either an intense lip or eye- but never both. Dare to find your own balance. Go crazy with color wherever you can. Enhance your features with simple lines. I firmly believe that makeup has no rules. And even if it did, some rules are meant to be broken.”

SOFIA COLON RIVERO Eves of Hallow

PHOTOGRAPHED by SOPHIA BALLESTEROS

MODELS: KATHERINE HIGGINS & SOFIA COLON RIVERO; MAKEUP: MEGAN HUBBARD

With this concept I wanted to embody one of the latest fall trends; fur. My vision was to have two models of different backgrounds with contrasting furs that ultimately fuse together, showing that there’s a style out there for everyone. I wanted to concentrate on the different kinds of furs, I played around with textures and colors to portray the different styles fur comes in. When most people think of fur, they think of those really chunky coats that can only be worn in the freezing cold. I wanted to veer away from that stigma and prove that anyone can loon good in fur, given there are so many different looks. Looks range from long coats to thick vests, all perfect looks for the fall no matter where in the world you are!”

MODELS: ANDREA CABRERA & LLOYD NEWBY; MAKEUP: GRACE RODRIGUEZ; PRODUCTION ASSISTANTS: DANIEL ESTRADA & NOELLE TORRILLO

As a current transfer student I wanted to become involved with an organization that stood out like no other. I came across DWF at the involvement fair this semester and remember looking at the magazine in complete shock of how amazing the product looked, especially one that is all designed by students. Joining this organization has taught me so much and has given me the freedom to show my creativity. I have never completed my own photoshoot before and I can’t deny I was nervous but with the outgoing and professional team DWF has, they helped me bring my vision to life. I am so thankful for everyone who work along with me and I truly hope to work along side with my fellow members again.”

A Velvet Dream was inspired by the current velvet fashion trend and how beautifully it conforms to this Fall season. The burgundy and black with pops of blush were the perfect combination to help me create a color scheme that was subtle yet, bold. Finally, the models I chose helped my visions come to life in a flawless and effortless way.

DWF Magazine has allowed me to make connections with inspiring, ambitious, and beautiful individuals. Additionally, it has given me the opportunity to express myself through my ideas and creativity. I hope to continue exploring my passions while collaborating with an outstanding team.”

WOMENSWEAR DIRECTOR SOPHIA BALLESTEROS IN “OKLAHOMA” - OUTTAKE by NOELLE TORRILLO 350

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS So much took place during the creation of this book. Countless nights that quickly turned into mornings, a tireless amount of work, and most importantly, memories that will last for years to come. This book would not have been possible without the dedication and passion put forth by our effortlessly talented fall 2017 team. Daniel, thank you for always being my right hand man and an incredible V.P. for our team. There is no wonder why so many people look up to and admire you - thank you for pulling numerous all-nighters, always being the first to show and last to go, and most importantly, a friend to not only myself but everyone else on the team. This book would not have been the same without you. I’d also like to acknowledge our incredible team of BTS Photographers and our Commercial Videography Director. A lot was asked of all of you this semester and never once did any of you complain or say “no.” I am so grateful for your work ethic, professionalism, and above all else, talent. Chelsea, thank you for remaining on this journey with us and for always showing up with a bright smile and even brighter presence. This cover turned out beautifully because of you. Briar, Matthew, and Tara you have been incredible additions to the team this year. I’m so thankful that you chose DWF. To the rest of our team, from Editors to Model Scouts and everywhere in between, thank you for all that you do. Without your time, ideas, and creativity, DWF: The Collection would not have happened. Moreover, all the work that was completed this semester would not have happened. I’m looking forward to creating with you all again next semester and seeing what you all come up with! Special thanks to our Faculty Advisor, Roxanne Parker. Roxanne, you will forever be my favorite college professor - thank you for taking on this role and allowing us to create freely. Last, but certainly not least, thank you to our readers, followers, and partners. We at DWF are proud and excited to continue on this journey with all of you.
